I’ll have some football and baseball tomorrow, but wanted to get my Rio pick for the ladies and men’s pick for the Wyndham Championship in Greensboro, NC.
Women’s Golf Competition at the 31st Olympics
TV: Golf Channel will telecast all four days:
Right now-3 PM ET/2 PM CT
Thursday: 6:30 AM-3 PM ET/5:30 AM-2 PM CT
Friday: 6:30 AM-3 PM ET/5:30 AM-2 PM CT
Saturday: 6 AM-3 PM ET/5 AM-2 PM CT
For the 31st Olympic games at the Gil Hanse designed Olympic course, which will be playing 6,200 to 6,500 for the women, and has started and continues through Saturday, I’m going with the 19 year old Seoul, South Korean phenom who has already won 19 times on tour including two major championships, the ANA Inspiration and the Evian Championship. She’s got all the tools; she’s long, her short game is superb, and her mental game is exceptional. She’s the number one player in the world for a reason, so I’m going with the best in the world to take home the gold medal.
TV: Golf Channel will telecast all four days:
Gold
Lydia Ko
Silver
Inbee Park
28 years old, Seoul, South Korea, 17 LPGA wins, 7 majors,
Bronze
Lexi Thompson
21 years old, Coral Springs, Florida, USA, 10 wins, 1 major.
Going with Lydia, the phenom from South Korea
Wyndham Championship contenders, winner
The Wyndham is being played on the 7,127 yard, Par 70 Sedgefield Country Club course designed by Donald Ross. It was opened in 1925. Good course, good field as we head into Fed Ex Cup playoffs next week beginning with the Barclays just outside of the Big Apple in New Jersey. By the way, Justin Rose was super on Sunday in Rio finishing in what was a match play match with Henrik Stenson with a birdie on the par 5 18th to capture the gold. Justin finished -17, two clear of Henrik. Justin was iron.
TV for Wyndham
Thursday-Friday: Golf Channel, 5-7 PM ET/4-6 PM CT
Saturday: CBS, 3-6 PM ET/2-5 PM CT
Sunday: CBS, 3-6 PM ET/2-5 PM CT
Contenders
Brandt Snedeker
Sneds won here in 2007 on his way to rookie of the year honors. He’s always a threat to win every time he tees it up.
Rickie Fowler
Rickie played last week at Rio and shot 64 on Saturday though he couldn’t back it up on Sunday. But I like the fact that he played for his country and that he competed last week certainly has his game homed in for Sedgefield CC.
Justin Thomas
The 23 year old former University of Alabama standout is showing signs of becoming a superstar on tour. Won the CIMB Classic in Nov. 2015, so I like Justin’s chances.
Johnson Wagner
Really like this hoss from Texas. I see Johnson, who is clutch when it counts, to be right there on Sunday.
Jimmy Walker
The PGA champion needs no explanation.
Winner
The 26 year old from San Antonio also played last week in Rio. Always a threat to win each week, just like Rickie, Sneds and Justin. Love the fact that he played for his country. Understand why Jordan, Dustin, Jimmy, Rory, Jason and others didn’t, with the concerns down there, but loved that we had some guys who did it and embraced the experience; this young man along with Rickie, Kuch and Bubba. It was really a superb event as it turned out. I was glued on Sunday. This young man won here in 2013, so I’m going with the horses for courses theory, too.
Patrick Reed
Like the Olympian to keep up the good work with a victory this week in Greensboro

longshot Wesley Bryan for me. He has done very well this year on the Web.com tour.
You’re liking those Web players Bama.
I will take Lexi for the gold and Adam Hadwin in the Wyndham
That’s a serious long shot with Hadwin, Walter, but you got it.
I like R. Fowler to try and turn his year around. He has not done much since his Bahamas trip, and needs to get it going.
Would love to see Michael Johnson do well….he made $238,000 at the Barbasol, and Monday qualified here….needs to likely get close to 1 mil to be in top 125….That is crazy that the 125th guy makes one mil…..Thank you Tiger….My guess is that the money in golf starts going down over the next few years…..
Thanks Brownie. Tiger sure got the purses huge, but Arnie did get it all started.
Spike says:
Wyndham Championship- my winner is former champion of CC of Birmingham Invitational, Kyle Stanley with Kevin Kisner close by on Sunday.
Thanks ,Spike. Interesting selections this week by the crew.
