The 125th U.S. Open Preview/Prediction

Does a 4 time LIV Tour winner in 2025 have a shot at Oakmont (Joaquin Niemann photo courtesy of Golf Digest).

The brutal Oakmont Country Club, 14 miles from downtown Pittsburgh, will host its 10th and the 125th edition of the United States Open. Scottie Scheffler and the course are the main storylines along with can anybody stick with Scheffler.

Oakmont is a 7,372 yard, Par 70 that will severely test the perseverance/mental toughness of the players. The rough is 5 inches high and extremely thick, so driving accuracy to the bentgrass fairways and approaches to the greens will be critical. There are 168 bunkers on the course, an average of 9 per hole. Once you get to the massive Poa Annua greens, they are stimping at over 14. The normal PGA greens stimp at 12, so these are historically fast greens. It’s going to be a beast for these players.

And who will challenge the seemingly unbeatable Scheffler? That is quite an undertaking though the talent from the PGA and LIV Tours are still through the roof good. Can Bryson DeChambeau, one of the ultimate grinders on either tour, go back to back at the Open. Joaquin Niemann has won 4 times on the LIV Tour and just won this past weekend at a LIV event in Virginia. Jon Rahm is definitely a threat. On the PGA side, Justin Thomas looks like he’s got a shot as he has his game back in order. Rory is struggling with a new driver as his former one was banned a couple of weeks ago, so he’ll have to figure it out. Collin Morikawa is long and accurate, so if he can putt, he’s got a shot. Ludvig Aberg is still ascending up the PGA ladder and looks primed for a breakout major championship victory. Here are the details that you need to know to get you set for this epic on Father’s Day weekend. Always a pleasure to watch on Father’s Day Sunday after a round.

So it’s a heckuva field and there are no guarantees for even the best of them all.

However

Winner

When Shohei Ohtani hits one of his 400+ feet mammoth shots out of Dodger Stadium or anywhere else, it’s a “no doubter.” While this field is spectacular and the talent immense, I’m going to take my “no doubter” player. Give me the greatness of the kid from Jersey by way of the University of Texas. I’ll take the 28 year old, who turns 29 on Saturday, June 21st. It’ll be a tremendous Father’s Day and early Birthday present for this superstar of the game. Give me the great one to make this U.S. Open, like many tournaments these days, as the Talking Heads once sang, “same as it ever was.”

Predictions for the NBA Finals and the 157th Belmont Stakes

The elite power forward for the Pacers, Pascal Siakum, sets his sights on getting Indiana its first NBA Championship in the franchise’s 49 years of existence. (Photo courtesy of The Sporting News).

The coveted Larry O’Brien Trophy is in the balance as the Oklahoma City Thunder square off with the Indiana Pacers in the NBA Finals beginning tonight at 7:30 CT on ABC. These young, highly successful teams have been dominant in the playoffs and both are playing at an extremely high level. For OKC, it’s about the prolific Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. The 26- year old, 6’6″, 195, 2025 NBA Most Valuable Player out of Toronto, Canada, by way of Kentucky, averaged 32.7 points per game in the regular season, and has averaged 29.8 in the playoffs. In his two most recent games against the Minnesota Timberwolves in the Western Conference Finals, the Thunder’s point guard went for 40 and 34 on May 26th and May 28th, respectively. He’s a scoring machine and will be exceptionally tough for the Pacers to stop. The Pacers counter with their great scorer, Pascal Siakum. Siakum, the 31 year old 6’8″, 245 power forward from Douala, Cameroon, by way of New Mexico State, averaged 20.2 points and 6.9 rebounds in the regular season and has gone for 21.1 and 5.8 in the playoffs. He went for 39 against the Knicks on Friday, 5/23, in the Eastern Conference Finals, 30 on Tuesday, 5/27, and 31 in the decisive game 6 Pacers’ victory on Saturday, 5/31. There are several other stellar players on both sides. Nice matchup.

Winner

I’m going to take the 17 time Triple Crown winning 72 year old trainer Baffert (3 Belmonts) and the 8 time Triple Crown winning 59 year old jockey Smith (3 Belmonts) to capture “The Test of the Champion,” on the grueling mile and a half course. The track will be pretty muddy as there was a lot of rain in New York State during the spring and will be in these upcoming two days. This thoroughbred won the Wood Memorial in April run in Queens, New York at the Aqueduct Racetrack covering a mile and an eighth in 1:48:15, the fastest mile and an eighth run in the Kentucky Derby prep races in April. Predictions for the 129th French Open and Stanley Cup Finals

The 23 year old Italian Jannik Sinner tries to make a miraculous comeback from an unjustified suspension and emerge victorious at Roland Garros. (Photo courtesy of The BBC).

The 129th French Open at Roland Garros moves into the semifinals for both the men and the women starting Thursday with the women’s semis beginning at 8 A.M CT and the men’s Friday at 8 A. M. CT, both on TNT and TruTV. The Finals will be at 8 A.M. Saturday for the women, and the Men’s Final will be Sunday at 8 A.M. Both will also be broadcast by TNT and truTV.

Here are my Predictions for the Men’s and Women’s Semifinals and Finals at Roland Garros in Paris.

Men’s Semifinals, Friday, 7:30 A.M. CT, TNT, TruTV

Jannik Sinner over Novak Djokovic, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5, 7-5

Carlos Alvaraz over Lorenzo Musseti, 6-4, 6-4, 6-2

Men’s Championship, Sunday, 8 A.M. TNT, TruTV

Jannik Sinner over Carlos Alvaraz, 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (8-6), 5-7, 7-5.

Men’s Champion

I’ll take the 23 year old from Innichen, South Tyrol, Italy. Viva Italia. This

will be his 4th major victory. He won the 2024 and 2025 Aussie Open

and the 2024 U.S. Carlos will be a load, but I like Jannik to return

strongly from his unwarranted 3 month suspension after the Australian

for a substance that was rubbed on him inadvertently by his physio

therapist.

Jannik Sinner

Women’s Semifinals

Iga Świątek over Aryna Sabalenka, 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (10-8)

Coco Gauff over Lois Boisson, 7-6 (9-7), 4-6, 7-5

Women’s Final, Saturday, 8 A.M. TNT, TruTV

Swiatek over Gauff, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3

Women’s Champion

Iga Świątek

The 24 year old from Warsaw, Poland wins her fifth French Open and 6th Grand Slam championship.

She’s won at Roland Garros in 2020, 2022, 2023 and 2024. This would be her fourth French Championship in

a row. She also won the 2022 U.S. Open.

Stanley Cup Finals Prediction

Florida Panthers over Edmonton Oilers in 7

Conn Smythe Award winner- most valuable player in the Stanley Cup

Playoffs. Named after a coach for the Toronto Maple Leafs back in the

day-that’s about all I know on that.

Sergei Bobrovsky

The 36 year old goal keeper from Nuvokuznetsk (think that’s right), Russia (not the most favored country) has

been terrific in the the postseason. I see that continuing in the Finals.

The veteran goalie for the Panthers, Bobrovsky, gets it done for his team in the Stanley Cup Finals. (Photo courtesy of For the Win-USA Today).
