The NFC and AFC Championship Games, Four teams left. Previews/Predictions

It’s down to four teams in the NFL Championship Games as the NFC and AFC host their Final Four today in Philadelphia and Kansas City respectively. Which 2 teams will emerge and punch their ticket to Super Bowl LVII at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona in two weeks, Sunday, February 12th, at 5:30 PM CT on FOX. Rihanna will be the halftime entertainment. The Super Bowl is a spectacle and a phenomenal day in sports. The Star Spangled Banner, America the Beautiful, the Super Bowl Commercials. And the game itself and what it means to the players, you can see it on their faces. Should be riveting. But you have to get there first. Here are the 4 teams aiming to take the next step. It’s the ultimate step in their legacies; winning the Lombardi Trophy.

Here’s a preview of today’s classics with 4 quality teams and why White’s World is picking these two teams to matriculate to the Super Bowl.

Eagles by 2 1/2

The Niners defense is superb. Nick Bosa is a sacking machine as he’s posted 18 1/2 sacks on the season and will most likely be voted the NFL Defensive Player of the year. Brock Purdy has done terrifically well under center. Mr. Irrelevant has become one of, if not the most important quarterback in the National Football League. Running back Christian McCaffrey, wide receiver Deebo Samuel and all world tight end George Kittle, still can’t get over his juggling catch last Sunday against the Cowboys, are seemingly unstoppable forces. The Niners have the No.1 defense in the NFL. Their defensive coordinator, DeMeco Ryans, a former linebacker at Alabama in the earlier 2000’s before S, is in line for a head job somewhere after the season due to the stellar job he’s done with the Niners defense.

But the Eagles have the No.2 defense in the NFL and led the league in sacks with 70 and added five more in the playoffs for 75 total through 18 games. Jalen Hurts is healthy now from his injured shoulder, they can run it and throw it and this game is at the Linc. DeVonta Smith, A.J. Brown and Miles Sanders are pretty awesome offensive weapons as well. If it was at Levi’s Stadium, I might go with the 49ers. But the Link will be rocking, and this Eagles team is high quality. I’ll take the Eagles to barely soar past the Niners in a tight one with some stellar defense played and enough quality offense.

Chiefs by 1 1/2

I was all ready to pick the Bengals after they dismantled the Bills last Sunday at Orchard Park, 27-10. Joe Burrow and the offense were terrific and the defense stymied Josh Allen and the Bills offense on the road in heavy snow. And, after Patrick Mahomes II suffered a high ankle sprain last Saturday against the Jaguars, things were looking pretty good for the Bengals and a little slimmer for the Chiefs. Then Bengals cornerback Mike Hilton came out on Wednesday and called Arrowhead Stadium, “Burrowhead Stadium.” That’s some serious bulletin board material. The line started out with the Bengals favored by 1 and now the Chiefs are favored by 1 1/2. The Chiefs are upset and Mahomes and his team come out and take care of business and punch their ticket to Glendale. Hello Eagles-Chiefs.

Chiefs 31, Bengals 28

Vanderbilt Basketball with tremendous W on Saturday on the road. Major opportunity tonight in Memorial

What an effort by the team on Saturday in an 85-82 victory over the Georgia Bulldogs at Stegman Coliseum in Athens. I was with a Georgia fan on Thursday and he was kind of laughing when I said we’re kind of the perpetual underdog, so it felt good to handle them Dawgs.

Ezra Manjon played a superb game leading us with 19 points. Ezra was 8 of 12 from the field and 3 of 3 from the charity stripe. He had two major clutch ones in the last minute. More on the free throw shooting in a moment.

Myles Stute added 14, and the great Myles, when he’s hot, which is often, was four for four from trifecta. We need him doing that the rest of this season. Tyrin Lawrence, who has been playing sensational basketball for us, finished with 15. And our tough little man with a gigantic heart, Trey Thomas, added 12 and was tremendous from the line in the last 30 seconds of the game.

Trey was six for six from the stripe. He won the game for us at the end. Awesome work by the man, our super junior.

With Liam Robbins out till the beginning of March with an ankle injury and our other stellar big man, freshman Lee Dort also out till late February/early March with an ankle injury, Quentin Millora-Brown really has to step up. Q did that on Saturday with 7 points and 11 huge boards. Q can give us a lot. He’ll have to dig in tonight. Malik Dia and Collin Smith, two more of our stud freshman class, will have to give us quality minutes going forward on offense, defense and on the glass. Jordan Wright, our stellar senior, will always step up. We’ll need Jordan and Myles to really hit the boards and help out Q. Tyrin is a pretty good rebounder, too. And we’ll have to shoot it well. I love what I’ve seen from stellar 94, 4 star freshman Noah Shelby. Our future is bright now and in 2023-24. Paul Lewis is another freshman who’s going to be a stud for us. Paul gave us some quality minutes on Saturday at the point and sank two trifectas.

So, awesome victory for the team. It doesn’t get any easier tonight at 8 as the Kentucky Wildcats come into Memorial. SEC Network will broadcast. We’ll have to figure out a way to slow down their elite big man, Oscar Tshiebwe. Tshiebwe is 6’9″, 260 and a load. He’s averaging 16.6 points per game and 14 boards. They’ve got some other stellar guys as Calipari can really recruit. They are now 13-6 and 4-3 in the SEC and have won their last 3 in a row including a 63-56 road victory over now No.4 Tennessee. They’re always tough.

But we can win this with our home crowd into it and our players giving it everything they’ve got on both ends of the floor, sinking our threes and frees, taking care of the ball, defending well and hitting those boards relentlessly. If we can play a complete game tonight, we can register a season changing victory at Memorial. I’ll have a recap tomorrow if we can come out victorious.

Farmers Insurance Open really cranks up 2023 season on the PGA Tour

The tour has been cookin’ along for a while now, but now that it heads to beautiful San Diego at pristine and historic Torrey Pines Golf Club, as the PGA Tour season really feels like it’s commenced.

Jon Rahm is playing beyond spectacular golf right now. He won this past weekend at the American Express in La Quinta, California, shooting 27 under and outlasting rookie Davis Thompson, a 23 year old who was born in Auburn, AL. and played at the University of Georgia. Thompson shot 26 under. Thompson had an unusual thing happen to him on the par 3, 17th hole on Sunday. He was one shot back of Rahm and faced a 50 foot birdie putt. He chose to leave the pin in for his attempt. He stroked it perfectly and the ball was tracking right towards the hole, center cut. But, unfortunately for Thompson, the ball hit the flagstick and popped out of the hole, 16 inches from it. He tapped in for par, and lost by a shot. That leads to the question of should you keep the pin in on putts or should the pin be pulled out? On putts of that length, some golfers will have their caddie tend the pin and pull it out when the ball is getting close. Many golfers these days are leaving the pin in on all putts. Matthew Fitzpatrick kept the pin in on almost every putt he attempted when he won the U.S, Open in 2022 at The Country Club at Brookline (MA.). Brooke Henderson leaves the pin in on every putt including one footers and she won the Amundi Evian Championship in 2022, one of the five majors on the LPGA Tour. It’s played in pristine Evian-led Bains, France.

So, many players choose to leave it in. I favor taking the pin out on every putt except for the 30 footers and beyond and I’ll get one of my playing partners to tend it from that distance. But it’s a personal choice thing. A lot of guys I play with like the visual the flag gives them. They can just see their target better. I just don’t want to miss a putt because the ball hits the pin and gets rejected. It cost Thompson this past Sunday, but that seems to be an unusual occurrence. Still, it’s something for the PGA players to consider now and going forward. And, for guys who play golf passionately for a hobby.

Now, Rahm lands at a spot he’s had major success at, and I do mean Major. He won the 2021 U.S. Open at Torrey Pines South Course. He won the 2017 Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey also. And, since 2019, he’s finished T5, 2, T7 and T3 at the Famers along with his ‘21 Open title. Beyond that, in his last 7 worldwide starts, he’s finished tied 2nd at the 2022 BMW Championship on the DP World Tour, the European Tout, last September. He won the 2022 Spanish Open. He finished tied for 4th at the CJ Cup in South Carolina in 2022. He won the 2022 DP World Tour Championship. He finished tied for 8th at the Hero World Challenge in 2022. He won the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions at Maui three weeks ago. And he won the American Express this past weekend. That’s a huge wow. With the kind of season the Rahminator’s putting together, you gotta like him to capture a major or 2, or 3, and have a gigantic season on par with one of the Tiger Woods-type seasons. He could win 6 to 8 tournaments.

He said in his press conference following his victory on Sunday that he felt like he could control every shot on the course at La Quinta. He was in the highly desirable zone golfer can get in at times. He said he wishes that would happen every time, but it’s hard to do. He could make a case for being in a zone this week at Torrey as well. He said the “MVPs” of his game this past weekend were his 56 and 52 degree wedges. He was hitting both of them to within 4 feet and better and leaving himself several tap in birdies. Kind of nice to be dialed in like that. You can make a lot of excellent paychecks and make some history with those kind of shots.

Rahm will be contending with a strong field this week. Justin Thomas, a two time PGA Championship winner, is playing. Xander Schauffele, the San Diego native who shot a 62 this past Sunday at the AMEX which included a double eagle on the par 5 fifth, he sank it from 225 yards out with a four iron. Xander is playing. Collin Morikawa, another Southern Californian and the 2020 PGA Championship winner and 2021 Open Championship winner, is in the field. Max Homa, who’s already won this season at the Fortinet Championship in Napa, CA., is in the field. Homa is another Southern Californian. Homa has won 5 times on the tour including back to back at Napa. He won the Genesis Open in Pacific Palisades, CA. in 2021. Tony Finau, who won the Cadence Bank Houston Open back in November, is in the field as well. The 33 year old Finau is hitting his stride. Will Zalatoris, who, after some frustration losing to Justin in a playoff at last year’s PGA Championship at Southern Hills in Oklahoma, and finishing second to Fitzpatrick at the U.S. Open at the Country Club last June, is in the field. Zalatoris had an 18 footer on the 72nd hole to tie Fitzpatrick at the Open in 2022 and just barely missed. Will did win the Fed Ex St. Jude Championship in Memphis last August, the first leg of the Fed Ex playoffs, so he had great success last year. Hideki Matsuyama is in the field as is Jason Day, who won in 2018. Day is 35 now and still competing hard. He just hasn’t had the success that was anticipated after he defeated Jordan Spieth at the 2015 PGA Championship at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin, when he played some stellar golf and denied Spieth a shot at a third major that year. But he’s got a new year ahead of him. He finished tied for third at Torrey in 2022 and finished tied for 18th at the American Express last weekend. So, it’s a really nice field.

Just for informational purposes, the 87th edition of the Masters, at famed Augusta National, will be played April 6th-9th, Thursday-Sunday, as they all are except for this tournament this week which starts tomorrow and finishes on Saturday so it won’t conflict with the NFC and AFC Championship Games on Sunday. The 105th PGA Championship will be played at Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, New York, May 18-21. The 123rd U.S. Open will be played at Los Angeles Country Club, the North Course, June 15-18. Father’s Day is always a special day and the final round of the U.S. Open doesn’t hurt the quality of that day. And the 151st Open Championship will be played at Royal Liverpool, Hoylake in Wirral , England July 20th-23rd. So, a superb major season once again. Also, the PGA has designated 17 tournaments as key ones as far as purse sizes. There are $20 million purses in each one of those 17 tournaments. Will get more into that as the season progresses.

Surprisingly, the Farmers is not one of them. But the tournament stands alone in its importance to many players, so there will always be a strong field at Torrey.

The defending champion is Luke List, who I forgot to say, outlasted Will Zalatoris in a playoff to capture the championship last season. Luke won his first PGA title in 206 starts at 37 years old. I was happy for my fellow Vanderbilt graduate. Luke is in the field as is Davis Thompson and Robbie Shelton from the University of Alabama. The 27 year old Shelton, from Mobile, who had a stellar albeit brief career in Tuscaloosa, finished tied for 6th last weekend at the American Express shooting 66-68-65-66. Wow, that seems good enough to win tournaments, but with the caliber of players these days, it’s tough to win out there. Former University of Alabama player Trey Mullinax is also in the field. The 30 year old from Birmingham, won the 2022 Barbasol Championship last July in Kentucky. They used to play the Barbasol at the Grand National Course in Auburn, a Robert Trent Jones course, part of the RTJ Trail. Mullinax and Shelton were teammates on the Alabama National Championship team in 2014. Trey sank a clutch 28 foot eagle putt to clinch it in 2014. It was a spectacular putt. Trey was also on the 2013 national championship team, so he went back to back.

Torrey Pines South is the longest course on the PGA Tour schedule this year at 7,765 yards. Torrey North, at 7,258 yards, is no bargain any more after the late Tom Weisckopf redesigned it in 2016. Torrey was originally designed by the father-son team of William P. and William F. Bell in 1957. Rees Jones renovated the South Course in 2001 and again in 2019. Both are par 72’s.

Of course, Tiger Woods won his dramatic 14th major in 2008 at Torrey, playing on a broken leg. Historic stuff. He won his 15th major at Augusta National in 2019. He’s got his work cut out for him to get to 16 and beyond. The competition is incredibly fierce now, and he just turned 47 on December 30th. I’m not totally counting him out, but it’s a “major” challenge for him now. The competition and his physical ailments will make it difficult.

The players will play the first 36 holes on the North and South, and, after round 2 and the cut, they will finish up on the South for the final 36 holes. The 18th is a par 5, 540 yard hole with a large trap on the right side that can hurt you off the tee and another one on the left along with thick Kikuyu rough and kind of a blind shot that keeps the player from going for it in 2 as does the trap on the right side. If the player can fit it in the fairway, he can go for it in two and have a shot at eagle. Tiger had an amazing eagle in the third round of the 2008 Open from about 40 feet above the hole on a beyond impressive round on Saturday. Then on Sunday, he sank a heroic 8 foot birdie putt on 18 to send the tournament into an 18 hole playoff with Rocco Mediate, which Tiger won on Monday. NBC’s terrific PGA play by play announcer Dan Hicks said when Tiger converted the birdie, “Would you expect anything different!”

Rahm converted an amazing 55 foot eagle putt in 2017 that clinched the tournament for him. It was his first victory on the PGA Tour. He now has nine victories on Tour and counting. In the playoff last year, List and Zalatoris both drove the ball into the right side bunker on 18, their first sudden death playoff hole. List hit his second shot to 131 yards from the hole and hit a gap wedge from there a foot from the hole to tap in for birdie. Zalatoris had a 15 footer before List to try and tie him, but missed to the left. List started the final round five shots off the lead and shot a 66 and waited two and a half hours to see if he could make it in the playoff or even win it. Really terrific tournament every year. There always seems to be high drama.

The rough will be up to 4 inches and the greens are Poa Annua and stimping at 13, so they will be quick. Anything above 12 on the Stimpmeter is fast. For the casual golf fan, the Stimpmeter measures the speed the ball will travel at a known velocity on the green as measured by the Stimpmeter which releases the ball from itself. The Stimpmeter a machine that allows the ball to roll off of it and roll on the green and measures how many feet it travels from the same velocity rolling off the machine. Eight feet is slow, 10 feet is medium and 12 feet is fast. Thirteen is a quick pace. For the U.S, Open, 12 is considered medium and 14 fast, so they really light’em up at the Open. But 13 is quick.

Three terrific groups tomorrow.

At 12:40 PM CT on the South Course, Rahm, Finau and JT.

At 11:30 AM CT on the South, Homa, Zalatoris and Morikawa.

And at 11:40 AM CT on the South, Xander, J.J. Spaun and Matsuyama.

Thursday, Sunny, 69, wind NE 16 MPH.

Rahmbo is the ultimate Torrey Pines competitor outside of Tiger. Tiger has won 8 times at Torrey. Rahm hasn’t accomplished that, but I like the 28 year old from Barrika Biscay, Spain, who learned English at Arizona State by listening to Rap Music, to capture another title in what promises to be a stellar season for Jon Rahm Rodriguez.

Chiefs by 8 1/2

It’s hard enough to defeat Patrick Mahomes and the No.1 seeded Chiefs any time, let alone at Arrowhead where the noise can push the Richter Scale to a minor earthquake. I love what Trevor Lawrence did in the second half against the Chargers last Saturday Night. After what looked like a total collapse in the first half by him as he threw 4 ints and Jacksonville was down 27-0 at halftime, Lawrence led his team to a second half charge to capture the victory over the Chargers, 31-30. This is a taller task. Lawrence is getting there, but he’s not on Mahomes level yet. For that matter, who is? I like Mahomes and the Chiefs to move on convincingly at home. The forecast is for rain then snow in KC. Who knows if that’s accurate 2 days out? Rain was expected all afternoon at San Francisco last Saturday on the Friday Weather.com hourly forecast and the sun came out. And, after the game, “Who’s ready for their jazz bath…”

After Dak Prescott and the Cowboys annihilated Tom Brady and Tampa Bay last Monday Night at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, they gained massive momentum heading into this Sunday evening’s game at Levi’s. However, Christian McCaffrey, Deebo Samuel, George Kittle and a terrific Niners defense awaits. Along with Brock Purdy, Mr. Irrelevant in the 2022 draft, who is beyond relevant for the this terrific team. I like the home team here.

Predictions for 111th Australian Open

The 111th Australian Open, 2023’s first Professional Tennis Major, commences tomorrow, Australian time, but tonight at 6 PM here in Central time of the U.S. ESPN and ESPN2 will cover along with ESPN+, and Tennis Channel will have replays throughout the day. Interesting time in Men’s tennis as Rafa Nadal and Novak Djokovic are battling for the all time Grand Slam victories lead. Nadal has 22 at present, while Joker has 21. Novak has won the Australian 9 times. Without Djokovic in the draw last year because he wasn’t vaccinated and was not allowed in the country, Nadal won his second Australian title. Novak is back now though and seeking to claim the championship that he’s won in 2008, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2016, 2019, 2020 and 2021. Rafa’s only other Australian title was in 2009. If Djoker wins, they’ll go to the French in late May, where Nadal has won 14 times, all tied up in majors at 22.

On the Women’s side, there is typical unpredictability with who will win the championship in Melbourne over this fortnight. Iga Swiatek is the hottest player in women’s tennis having won the French in 2020 and in 2022 and capturing the U.S, Open in 2022. Her best finish at the Australian is a semifinal appearance last season. Australian Ashleigh Barty won in Melbourne last year and then retired at age 25. So, the women’s side seems pretty open, though Swiatek is seeded No.1.

TV

ESPN and ESPN2 will begin coverage tonight at 6 CT with coverage running over the two week period and Tennis Channel featuring replays throughout the day. The women’s semifinals is Thursday, January 26th from 2:30 AM-6:30 AM CT on ESPN, so most will not be able to watch a lot of it unless you’re a really early bird or out for an all nighter. There will be a replay on Thursday during the day. The Men’s semifinals is Thursday to Friday, Jan 26-27th, 9:30 PM-12 AM CT for the first semifinal and 2:30-5:30 AM CT on Friday, 1/27, for the second semifinal, with ESPN televising.

The Women’s Final is Saturday, 1/28, from 2:30-5:30 AM CT on ESPN, and the Men’s Final is Sunday, 1/29 from 2:30-6 AM CT on ESPN. So it’ll be tough to catch the action. DVR will help quite a bit for this tournament like it always does if you can refrain from looking at the scores on the ESPN or other websites.

Predictions

Women’s Semifinals

1.Iga Świątek over Jessica Pegula (excellent 28 year old American from Buffalo, N.Y. and daughter of Buffalo Bills owner Terry Pegula) 6-4, 5-7, 6-3

2.Ons Jabeur (Tunisia) over Aryna Sabalenka (Belarus) 7-5, 4-6, 6-4

Final

Iga Świątek over Ons Jabeur 7-6 (7-4), 6-3

The 21 year old native of Raszyn, Poland does what the experts think she’s going to do and captures her first Australian and 4th Slam. She’s got a bright future. Hopefully she stays focused unlike Barty and Naomi Osaka, who’s pregnant now so not playing, but says she’ll be back next year for the Australian. Osaka’s got a lot of talent, but always seems to have some drama. I expect Coco Gauff to play well and reach the quarters of this tournament and keep inching closer to her first major title. I like her to possibly get over the hump at Roland Garros, will predict closer to time, where she lost in the final last year to Swiatek. Coco just needs to keep her passion and drive up, and she seems to be the type of competitor and person to do that at 18 years old. She’ll be 19 on March 13th.

Men’s Semifinals

1. Nadal over Cameron Norrie (27 year old native from Johannesburg, South Africa via TCU. Nice left handed player.), 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, 7-5.

2. Djokovic over Casper Ruud (really fine 24 year old player from Oslo, Norway who is on the verge of a Grand Slam title, lost in the finals of the French and the U.S. in 2022) 7-5, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.

Final

Should be a classic though like the favorite. Djoker over Nadal 7-5, 5-7, 6-4, 6-3

The 35 year old Djokovic and the 36 year old Nadal will be all square at 22 majors heading into the 127th French Open in Paris (Roland Garros, specifically) which starts Sunday, May 28th. The Final of the Men’s French Open will be Sunday, June 11th. Expecting a riveting Australian first though.

NFL Super Wild Card Weekend, 6 games, Previews/Predictions

It’s a massive weekend in the National Football League with 12 teams. Many questions a loom as teams set their sights on advancing to the Divisional Round. The Chiefs and Eagles earned byes with each having the best regular season in their respective conferences, the Chiefs in the AFC and the Eagles in the NFC. But these 12 teams will have the chance to make it to next week and attempt to reach the mountaintop, Super Bowl LVII in Glendale, Arizona at State Farm Stadium on February 12th. Here’s a look at this weekend’s compelling action along with predictions.

College Football Final Record

Niners by 10

Geno Smith has passed for 30 TDs this season against 14 interceptions, but he may have a tough time with Nick Bosa and this suffocating 49ers defense. Mr. Irrelevant, Brock Purdy, their quarterback out of Iowa State, the final player selected in the 2022 draft, has been nothing short of spectacular in place of Jimmy Garrapolo, who was injured midway through the season. I’d say the Niners think Purdy is pretty relevant to their success. It’s been raining so much in California and there is a lot more expected this weekend. Seattle plays good defense, so expecting a slugfest with the 49ers outlasting the Hawks.

Tua is hurt and Teddy Bridgewater is banged up as well and is questionable. Josh Allen and the Bills are on a mission to win the Lombardi Trophy this season. Time will tell, but I like them to get off to a good start at home this Sunday. Interestingly, if Buffalo advances to the AFC Championship Game and plays Kansas City, the game will be played at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta due to the fact that the Bills-Bengals game was canceled because of the Damar Hamlin frightening incident on Monday Night football a week and a half ago. Hamlin is doing well now, miraculously, and the Bills get a break if they face the Chiefs in the Championship Game. They played one less game and weren’t given a chance to tie the Chiefs for the best record and they would have won home field with the tiebreaker had they defeated Cincy. They’ve got a lot of work ahead of them to get there.

Tom Brady is 7-0 against the Cowboys in his career. Dak Prescott was tied for the league lead in interceptions with Davis Mills of the Texans with 15. Dak threw 3 pick six’s in his last 4 games and threw 7 interceptions in his last 7 regular season games. It looks quite favorable for the Bucs.

But I’ll take the Cowboys. Dak plays well and Tony Pollard, an 1,000 yard rusher with 9 TDs, and Ezekiel Elliott, 876, 5 TDs, along with CeeDee Lamb, 107 receptions for 1,359 yards and 9 TDs, and tight end Dalton Schultz, 57 receptions, 577, 5 TDs and a tough Cowboys defense led by outside backer Micah Parsons, do enough to overcome Brady and the Bucs on the road. Jerry “will get by.”

Stellar National Championship Tonight at SoFi Stadium, No.1 Georgia vs. No.3 TCU

A classic David versus Goliath matchup takes place tonight at 6:30 at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California as the No.3 TCU Horned Frogs and their improbable journey continues one more time and this time its for the biggest prize of them all aw they face the No.1 Georgia Bulldogs in the National Championship Game.

Can Max Duggan and the underdog Horned Frogs make one more giant leap into the college football history books or will the winning machine that is the Georgia Bulldogs cement their status as the premier program in college football today?

Here’s my preview and prediction for tonight’s contest.

Max Duggan and the Horned Frogs love the underdog role. It ignites them. Duggan, who finished second in the Heisman voting to Caleb Williams of USC, has completed 253-of-397 passes, 64%, for 3,546 yards, 32 TDs against 6 ints. He’s also rushed for 461 yards and 8 TDs. He wasn’t even the starter when the season started under Sonny Dykes and a new coaching staff. The fourth year senior could have mailed it in and transferred, but he stuck it out and when starter Chandler Morris was injured in the first game, Duggan took over and never looked back. He’s the premiere underdog story and one fine quarterback. His running game is led by Kendre Miller, who rushed for 1,399 yards and 17 TDs, but is questionable tonight with a sprained MCL in his knee suffered in the semifinal victory over Michigan, a 51-45 epic. Miller is 50-50 to play. If he can’t play, Emari Demercado will get the start and he’s highly capable. Demercado rushed for 622 yards and 6 TDs this season as a backup. But when Miller got hurt against Michigan, he came in and rushed for 150 yards and a TD. Quentin Johnston is the big 6’4” 215 pound target on the perimeter for the Frogs. He’s caught 59 passes for 1,066 yards and 6 TDs. He’s a force the Georgia secondary will have to reckon with. Taye Barber is a speedy target. Barber has caught 36 passes for 605 yards and 5 TDs. Derius Davis has 37 receptions for 430 yards and 5 TDs as well. He’s also a key man in the return game. He’s taken two punts back to the house. Savion Willams is another big target for the Horned Frogs at 6’5”, 215, and has 29 receptions for 392 yards and 4 TDs. And 6’7”, 255 tight end Jared Wiley has 22 receptions for 231 yards and 4 TDs.

On defense, the key guys to look for are 6’4”, 275 defensive end Dylan Horton, 6’1”, 230 pound linebacker Dee Winters, and 6’2”, 190 pound safety Bud Clark. Inside linebacker, 6’2”, 240 Navy transfer Johnny Hodges is another. Horton leads the defense in sacks with 10 for -73 yards and has added 13 1/2 tackles for loss of -77 yards. Winters leads the team in TFLs with 14 1/2 for -59 yards and adds 7 1/2 sacks for -40 yards. Winters had a key pick six against Michigan last Saturday in the Fiesta Bowl. Hodges leads the defense in tackles with 81 and has added 8 1/2 tackles for loss of -34 yards. Clark leads the defense in interceptions with 5 for 83 yards including a pick six last Saturday against Michigan as well. TCU has 16 ints on the season. They are averaging 41 points on the year and giving up 26.

The No.1 Bulldogs have been a bulldozer a lot of the season, though they have had their tricky moments. But after last Saturday’s 14 point 4th quarter comeback against No.4 Ohio State, a 42-41 Bulldogs victory, Georgia is one win away from going back to back as national champions. The Crimson Tide was the last team to do that in 2011 and 2012. Only seven teams have accomplished that feat and the last team to do it legitimately before the Tide was Nebraska in 1994 and 1995. USC did it in 2003 and 2004 but the ‘04 championship was vacated later due to NCAA violations by the Trojans under Pete Carroll amidst Reggie Bush’s house that he was awarded for playing at USC. Bush’s Heisman was later vacated.

The Bulldogs averaged 39 points this season and gave up 14.79. Stetson Bennett was stellar completing 292-of-429 passes, 68%, for 3,823 yards, with 23 TDs against 7 ints. He was a force in the fourth quarter last Saturday against Ohio State lifting his team on his shoulders and throwing a 76 yard perfectly placed deep ball for a TD to Arian Smith and then throwing the game winner, a 10 yard TD pass to Adonai Mitchell with 1:49 left in the game, though the Dawgs had to sweat out a last second 50 yard field goal attempt by Ohio State that was hooked to the left. Bennett is surrounded by an arsenal of weapons. Kenny McIntosh has rushed for 779 yards and 10 TDs. Daijun Edwards has posted 739 yards and 7 TDs. And Kendall Milton, who has really come on recently, has rushed for 559 yards and 7 TDs. The unstoppable tight end Brock Bowers, 6’4”, 230, has 50 receptions for 790 yards and 6 TDs. Maybe not as prolific as last season, but he plays like a Sherman Tank, and is a force that will really challenge the Horned Frogs defense. Ladd McConkey has 53 receptions for 674 yards and 5 TDs. He’s been playing hurt recently but toughing it out for his team. He’s a weapon if he’s healthy enough to be a factor. He’s definitely playing tonight. McIntosh has caught 42 passes for 505 yards and 2 TDs out of the backfield. And Smith, 6 receptions for 195 yards in 10 games, and Mitchell, 8 receptions for 112 yards and 2 TDs in just 5 games, he’s been injured most of the season, are game breakers on the perimeter. Defensive tackle Jalen Carter, 6’3”, 300, is a force in the middle. A’Shawn Robinson, formerly of the Crimson Tide and now the LA Rams, totally stuffed the Cincinnati Bengals running game in Super Bowl 56 last year in SoFi and that’s what Carter can do. He also has 7 TFLs for -27 yards and 3 1/2 sacks for -17. He’s considered a top 3 draft pick in late April along with Bryce Young and Will Anderson Jr. It’s unknown the order in which those guys will be picked. Experts are going back and forth. The Chicago Bears have the No.1 pick and while they have Justin Fields, Young may be too good to pass up. It’ll be an interesting draft. Linebacker Jamon Dumas-Johnson, 6’1”, 245, leads the Dawgs with 9 tackles for loss of -35 yards, and also leads them in sacks with 4. Safety Christopher Smith leads Georgia in interceptions with 3. Cornerback Kelee Ringo returned the game winning int against Alabama in the 2021 national championship game. He’s a pretty good cover guy, though he was a bit exposed by Ohio State wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. last Saturday. Harrison Jr. caught 5 passes for 106 yards and 2 TDs before getting knocked out of the game in what should have been a targeting call. Georgia also was fortunate that the side judge granted Kirby Smart a time out right as Ohio State was running a successful fake punt. I thought Smart got the timeout in too late. Looked to be right as the play had started. He shouldn’t have been allowed that TO. If Ohio State is allowed to run that play. They would have been up 38-27 with 8 minutes left and looking good, Billy Ray. The Georgia defense has 10 ints on the season, 87 tackles for loss and 31 sacks. TCU has 84 TFLs and 30 sacks.

Both offensive lines will be tested tonight. Both are very good lines. Georgia’s is a little better. Will he a real interesting matchup for both O lines against attacking defenses.

Decision

Is there any way that TCU can slay this behemoth that is the Georgia Bulldogs? Georgia has 4 and 5 star recruits all over their depth chart, and while TCU has recruited pretty well, it’s not on the Bulldogs level. A lot of people are picking Georgia to win handily.

But I’m not one of them. Max Duggan and his Horned Frogs slay the giant. David did it with a sling shot, and I like the Frogs to do the same with several sling shots, Duggan, Johnson, Demercado, Winters, Horton and Clark for starters. Give me my daughter’s Horned Frogs to capture their first national championship in 85 years. 1938 to be exact. Should be an epic.

TCU 42, Georgia 41

Playoff games recap, Predictions for today’s 4 bowl games including 2 final New Year’s Six contests

Quite a Saturday of college football. The Crimson Tide looked like a national championship team, though it was too late for that. Still, a good sign for their future.

No.3 TCU took an 18 point lead into the fourth quarter and held on in the final minutes to knock off No.2 Michigan in the Fiesta Bowl, 51-45. The Horned Frogs keep defying the odds. Georgia, behind the heroics of Stetson Bennett, came back from 14 down late in the game, and survived Ohio State, 42-41. You wouldn’t think Bennett played well listening to Kirby Smart talk about him after the game. Smart, being the tough taskmaster that he is, was pointing out that Bennett made too many mistakes. I know he wants his team to play a lot better next Monday Night versus the Horned Frogs, but at least give your quarterback, who won the game for you, a little credit. He’s hard on him. I’ve noticed some coaches, when they’re trying to repeat for anything, a national title in football basketball, a Super Bowl, any other championship, may be a little too hard on their team and it can cost them in the end. You gotta build your players up too, especially your quarterback. Bennett’s the reason Georgia won it all last season, along with a stellar defense, and certainly this season keeping the team undefeated at 14-0.

So, it’ll be the Cinderella Frogs versus the Goliath Bulldogs. Georgia is a 13 point favorite. Seems like a lot of points. I’m “working through issues” to figure this game out, and will have a complete preview and prediction next Monday morning, 1/9/23 around 10:30-11. I’m looking at more of a classic, but want to dig into this some more and have a definitive opinion next Monday. The game kicks off at 7:15 PM CT on ESPN at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, Cali, just outside of LA. It’s a majestic masterpiece of a stadium. Should be fun to watch a game in that mausoleum. It’s like watching a game in Derrill Crowe’s house.

Here’s a look at today’s games.
