Prediction

It’s hard to go against 36 year old LeBron James and 27 year old Anthony Davis. In 15 playoff games, Davis has averaged 28.8 points and 9.3 rebounds. James has averaged 26.7 points 10.3 rebounds and 8.9 assists. In the close out game against the Nuggets Saturday Night, James went for 38, 16 and 10 assists. So that’s a dynamic and powerhouse duo the Heat have to deal with.

But I like them to do just that. Thirty one year old Jimmy “Buckets,” Butler has averaged 20.7 points, 5.7 rebounds and 4.5 assists. He’s one of the top 6 or 7 players in the NBA and a 5 time All Star and 4 time NBA All Defensive Team honoree and that’s pretty strong considering he was a 2 star recruit out of high school In Houston and went to Tyler Junior College in Texas before becoming a star at Marquette. He’s tough, he’s a leader and he is exceptionally clutch as the Celtics series would attest to. He converted big shot after big shot in crunch time against the Celtics, which looked unbeatable going into the series. The Heat also knocked off the No.1 seeded overall Milwaukee Bucks in round 2.

Goran Dragic is a spectacular point guard at 33. He’s averaged 20.9 points and 4.7 assists and is another phenomenal leader for this electric team. And then there are the young guys from Kentucky. Twenty three year old center Bam Adebayo is a force in his 3rd season out of UK. He’s averaged 18.5 points, 11.4 rebounds and 4.7 assists. He’s shooting 57% from the field. He’s a phenom in his third season at 6’9”, 255. And there’s 20 year old rookie shooting guard Tyler Herro, who is a beyond terrific marksman. I had picked the Celtics to win it all in my pre-playoff predictions and Herro was killing me. He is averaging 16.5 points on 46% shooting from the field, 38% shooting from trifecter, and 90% from the stripe. Herro can really play the game. Davis is a former Kentucky player too and led them to their only National Championship under John Calipari in 2012 as a freshman. and he was the first pick in the 2012 NBA draft by the New Orleans Pelicans. He’s a phenom as are Adebayo and Herro. It’s amazing Calipari hasn’t won more national championships with the talent he’s gotten there.

The Heat can hang with the Lakers in rebounding, and they shoot it better. They’ve shot it better than any other team in the league in the postseason and Butler and Adebayo are elite defenders.

So give me the Heat. I’ll take’em in 7.

MVP of Finals: Butler

Major League Baseball Playoffs and World Series Predictions

Major League Baseball begins its’ mainly October extravaganza with the Major League Playoffs beginning today. There are 16 teams qualified for the playoffs with 8 from the National League and 8 from the American League. There are 8 Wild Card Series with 4 in the American League, which starts today at 1 PM CT, and 4 in the National League starting tomorrow. The Wild Card Series, which is best 2 out of 3, will be played at the higher seeds’ home field.

Then the National League Division Series will be played at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas and Minute Maid Park in Houston. The ALDS will be played at Petco Field in San Diego and Dodger Stadium in LA. This is to keep a bubble situation for the playoffs to prevent any COVID cases. The National League is in Arlington and Houston and the American League is in LA and San Diego to keep it as neutral sites, which is too bad for the higher seeds as they earned home fields, but safety comes first at this time, and it worked spectacularly well for the National Hockey League, where the Tampa Bay Lightning just defeated the Dallas Stars to win the Stanley Cup in 6 games last night as Victor Hedman of Tampa Bay was selected as the Conn Smythe Award winner for most valuable player in the NHL playoffs, and it’s worked as superbly well in the NBA where the LA Lakers and LeBron James square off with Jimmy “Buckets” Butler and the Miami Heat tomorrow (Wednesday) night in the NBA Finals beginning at 8 PM CT on ABC. Will have preview and prediction tomorrow.

So MLB is following this blueprint. The Tennessee Titans reported that 3 players and 5 staff members had tested positive for COVID, so they and the Minnesota Vikings, the team they played this past Sunday in a phenomenal game which the Titans won 31-30 as long time New England Patriots kicker Stephen Gostkowski converted 6 of 6 field goals, including the 55 yard game winner with 1:44 left to clinch it for the Titans on the road and move them to 3-0. They’ll be off this week as will the Vikings, as the Titans were scheduled to play a huge game at home versus the Steelers, while the Vikings were at Houston. It is hoped that the Titans and Vikings can resume a week from Sunday, October 11th, Bama Golf’s birthday. With only 3 players positive, if the rest of the team can survive maybe the Titans can make it a week from Sunday. This Sunday looks like a long shot.

So, Major League Baseball is doing the right thing.

ABC, ESPN, ESPN2 and TBS will televise the Wild Card Series beginning today. Game 1 is No. 6 Houston Astros @No.3 Minnesota Twins, 1 PM CT on ABC.

At 2 PM CT on ESPN, the No. 7 Chicago White Sox, a surprisingly strong team for most of the regular season before struggling at the end are @ the No.2 Oakland A’s a very strong team.

At 4 PM CT on TBS, the No.8 Toronto Blue Jays are @ No.1 Tampa Bay Rays.

And at 6 PM CT on ESPN, the No. 5 New York Yankees are @ No.4 Cleveland Indians.

Wednesday

No. 7 Cincinnati Reds @ No.2 Atlanta Braves, should be a highly competitive series with the Reds’ pitching led by aces Sonny Gray and Trevor Bauer trying to neutralize the Braves’ bats.

9 PM CT, ESPN

No.8 Milwaukee Brewers @ No.1 Los Angeles Dodgers-Brewers have their hands full with this juggernaut.

The ALDS Series will be televised by TBS and the NLDS series will be televised by MLB Network and Fox Sports1

TBS will televise the ALCS and FOX and Fox Sports 1 will carry the NLCS.

The World Series commences October 20th and will be televised by FOX.

With all that background intel here are the predictions.

Wild Card Games

National League

Dodgers over Brewers in 2

Padres over Cardinals in 2

Cubs over Marlins in 2

Braves over Reds in 3,

That’ll be a tough series, maybe the best series of the wild card round.

American League

Rays over Blue Jays in 3

Yankees over Indians in 3

Twins over Astros in 2

A’s over White Sox in 2

NLDS

Dodgers over Padres in 4

Braves over Cubs in 5

Another tough series for the Braves, but they advance.

ALDS

Rays over Yankees in 5

A’s over Twins in 5

Expecting 2 hard fought series in the American League.

NLCS

Braves over Dodgers in 7

I’m going to take the Braves with their bats and enough pitching and I like the Braves coaching better than the Dodgers. Give me the Atlanta team to make their first World Series appearance since 1999 when they lost to the Yankees in 4 games.

ALCS

Rays over A’s in 6

Very bullish on this Rays team. They have some serious arms. When Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman threw a 101 MPH fastball at a Rays batter’s head, luckily missing him, Rays Manager Kevin Cash said after the game, “I’ve got plenty of guys who can throw 98.” He got fined for it, but you loved it. The Rays never backed down to the Yankees and took 8 out of 10 games from them this season. They get the last laugh in the American League.

World Series

Atlanta Braves vs.Tampa Bay Rays

This should be a superb Fall Classic with the heavy lumber of the Atlanta team, as Skip Carey used to say, versus the pitching artillery of the Rays. After going back and forth on this one, both teams have a lot of magic to them, give me,

The Atlanta Braves in 7 over the Tampa Bay Rays

MVP of the World Series

Freddie Freeman

I expect Freddie to also be the MVP of the National League as he hit .341 with 13 homers and 53 Ribeyes and was a dominant player and leader for this stellar team. Like Freddie and the Braves to bring home the World Championship Trophy to the ATL.

I picked Mike Trout in the American League so I’ll stick with him for the AL MVP.

Cy Young for the American League will be Shane Bieber of the Cleveland Indians

Cy Young for the National League will be the resurgent Yu Darvish of the Chicago Cubs.

The 124th French Open predictions

The 124th French Open has commenced at Roland Garros in Paris. Many of the top players on both the men’s and the women’s side are playing with not too many exceptions except for Roger Federer in the men’s and defending champion Ashleigh Barty in the women’s. Federer is recovering from a knee injury and Barty is not playing due to COVID concerns.

Tennis Channel and NBC will televise for the next 2 weeks. Tennis Channel’s coverage is throughout the day starting usually around 4 A.M. or 5 A.M. CT in the morning and running to 2 or 3 P.M. CT.. I wouldn’t set your alarm for 4 A.M. NBC will broadcast the Women’s Final at 8 A.M. CT on Saturday, October 10th, and the Men’s Final at 8 A.M. on Sunday, October 11th.

In the Men’s, I’m going to take Novak Djokovic over 31 year old Frenchman Gael Monfils, who’ll have an excellent tournament, in the semis, 6-4, 5-7, 6-3, 6-4, and Dominique Thiem to upset Rafa Nadal in the other semifinals match, 7-5, 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 6-4.

In the Finals, I’ll go with Thiem over Joke, 6-4, 5-7, 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (8-6). Will be an electric match.

Like Thiem to carry his momentum from winning the 140th U.S, Open over to the French where the 27 year old Austrian has been runner-up 2 years in a row to Nadal

In the Women’s Finals, I’ll take Victoria Azarenka over Petra Kvitova, 6-4, 5-7, 6-3. Like the 31 year old native of Belarus, Azarenka, to bounce back from a tough loss to Naomi Osaka in the U.S. Open finals and redeem herself at the French.

After last Sunday’s catastrophic collapse against the Cowboys in which the Falcons blew a 15 point lead with 5 minutes to go, which included not recovering an onside kick that was rolling 6, 7, 8,9 yards while the Falcons were just watching it, the Falcons and Coach Dan Quinn need to recover. I read where the Special Teams Coach took the blame for the miscue on special teams. No doubt about that. It overshadowed the fact that Matt Ryan, Julio Jones and Calvin Ridley played awesome games. I see the Birds bouncing back this week at home over a surprisingly undefeated Bears team.

Like Cam and the Patriots to snap back this Sunday after losing a heartbreaker last Sunday Night at Seattle, falling 35-30 with the ball on the 1 yard line on the last play of the game. Cam tried to run it in, but was stopped. Didn’t like the play-call. Thought they should have rolled Cam out to the right and had 4 receivers on the right side and taken a shot that way. The Raiders were so impressive on Monday Night Football in a 34-24 victory over the Saints, but I’ll take the Pats at home.

I’ll take Lamar Jackson barely over the phenomenal Patrick Mahomes and his Chiefs. Hard to go against the defending Super Bowl Champs and their sensational quarterback, but Jackson is terrific right now and the team looks like they’re on a mission to win it all at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa on February 7th, 2021.

SEC Football kicks off Saturday, Week 4 in College Football looks terrific

All 14 SEC teams will be in action on Saturday with the No. 8 Auburn Tigers squaring off with the No.23 Kentucky Wildcats at 11 AM CT on the SEC Network. The No.2 Crimson Tide kicks off at 6 PM CT on ESPN @ Missouri. Missouri had 12 cases of COVID reported earlier this week, but 5 players off that list are now eligible, so they’ll be somewhat close to full strength. Some other key matchups feature No. 5 Florida @ Ole Miss at 11 AM CT on ESPN, No.4 Georgia @ Arkansas at 3 PM CT on the SEC Network, No.6 LSU hosting Mississippi State and Mike Leach at 2:30 PM CT on CBS, No.16 Tennessee @ South Carolina at 6:30 PM CT on the SEC Network, and Vanderbilt @ No. 10 Texas A&M at 6:30 PM CT on the SEC Alternate Channel, which is 611-1 on DirecTV, 820 on Charter, and 1608-1610 on AT&T U-verse. So a spectacular lineup awaits on Saturday. Some other solid games on the ledger starting tonight that I’ll discern below. Here’s a look at this week’s contests and which teams I see prevailing.

Missouri has had to deal with Covid, but seem to be in pretty good shape heading into the game Saturday Night. However, they’re facing another juggernaut out of Tuscaloosa. Mac Jones takes over under center full time for the Crimson Tide and I highly anticipate a very successful season for the offense with Jones calling the signals. Jones completed 97 of 141 passes last season in the last 4 games, 69% for 1,503 yards, 14 TDs against 3 ints. He looked like a very good quarterback to me closing out the season. In the Citrus Bowl victory over Michigan, 35-16, Jones was 16 of 25 for 327 yards, 3 TDs and 0 ints. He was phenomenal. I see that carrying over to 2020. Najee Harris was tremendous last season rushing for 1,224 yards, 13 TDs and catching 27 passes for 304 yards and 7 TDs. He’s got power and speed and tremendous pass catching ability. Najee is an early Heisman Trophy favorite, one of them. Then on the perimeter, DeVonta Smith, 68 receptions for 1,256 yards and 14 TDs, and the dynamic Jaylen Waddle, 33-560, 6 TDs are stellar. In the return game, Waddle averaged 24 yards per punt return with a TD, and he averaged 35 yards in kickoff returns with a 7. It’s hard to forget his performance against the Auburn Tigers in which he caught 3 TD passes and took a kick back to the house 98 yards in an amazing game that the Tigers pulled out, 48-45. Wow, that game always delivers. John Metchie looks like a receiver who can take the next step this season and become another option in the passing attack. On the offensive front, the great Alex Leatherwood, one of my favorite names in football, returns for his senior season at left tackle. Leatherwood is 6’6”312. He was voted along with Najee, DeVonta and Waddle as a first team All-SEC pick by the SEC Sportswriters. Beside him on the front wall are left guard Deonte Brown, 6’4”, 350, that’s a Mack Truck coming at you, center Landon Dickerson, another All-SEC first teamer. Dickerson is 6’6”, 325. Right guard is Emil Ekiyor Jr., 6’3” 324, and at right tackle is 6’7” pound Evan Neal. Quite a Sherman Tank Infantry for the Tide up front. The depth looks solid.

On defense, first team All-SEC linebacker Dylan Moses returns from injury and the Crimson Tide is ecstatic to have him back. Defensive end LeBryan Ray is an SEC first teamer as is cornerback Patrick Surtain II. These guys are all All-American candidates as well. The secondary has some new faces with Josh Jobe at the other corner position, Daniel Wright at free safety, and Jordan Battle at strong safety along with Malachi Moore at the Star position, the fifth defensive back. Christian Harris is back for his sophomore season at outside backer, and he’s expected to do big things this season for S and defensive coordinator Pete Golding, who hopes to have a healthy defense this season so he can prove himself to be worthy of a defensive coordinator job at Alabama. D.J. Dale is back at defensive tackle at 6’3”, 307. Christian Barmore is a little banged up and is doubtful for the game.

But the team is loaded and looks phenomenal. 11-2 is a super season for a lot of teams, but with the bar so high in Tuscaloosa, the coaches, players and fans consider that unacceptable, which is unusual to say the least. But this team had taken annual trips to the Playoff, so it was a surprise they didn’t make it in 2019. A lot of injuries on defense led to some not so typical defense from the Crimson Tide. But there is a lot of outstanding talent returning and the team will most likely be on a mission to redeem themselves. Larry Roundtree III is a solid running back for Missouri as he gained 829 yards and scored 9 TDs last season. Shawn Robinson transferred from TCU and will be the signal caller for the Tigers. He’s a talented dual threat QB. I still think it’s going to be difficult for the Tigers to score points. Eli Drinkwitz came over from App State to try to turn the program around. He could. He’s a very promising 37 year old coach. But it’s going to be tough against this football juggernaut that will settle for nothing less than winning it all this season. Clemson, Georgia, LSU, Florida, Ohio State and maybe Oklahoma and Texas will have something to say about it. Auburn has a very good team, and so does Texas A&M. Tennessee has had a resurgence under Jeremy Pruitt. Penn State should be a good team in the Big Ten when they start back playing October 24th. So plenty of time to decide that. For the Tide, it’s take care of business in Columbia as their first priority.

I see this as a tough game for the Tigers. Bo Nix should be an even better quarterback his sophomore season, but Kentucky has a pretty solid defense. I’m looking forward to seeing the skilled players the Tigers put on the field in receivers Seth Williams, Anthony Schwartz, and Eli Stove and running backs D.J. Williams, Shaun Shivers, along with high 4 star true freshman Tank Bigsby, another all world name, and redshirt freshman Mark-Anthony Richards, who also is a highly promising back. The offensive line is new but I’ve heard good things about O line coach Jack Bicknell Jr. and the size is 315, 324, 299, 325 and 330, so good size. Center Nick Brahms is a little smaller at 299. Defense should be strong under Kevin Steele once again. BIg Kat Bryant is poised for a big year at defensive end. KJ Britt and Owen Pappoe return at linebacker, while Christian Tutt will lead the secondary at the Star position. Another classic name is Smoke Monday, a safety for the Tigers. Very good player too. I like this Tigers team. These all SEC schedules are brutal and Auburn has a tough one as usual. Kentucky returns an excellent offensive line with 321, 300, 292, 300 and 345 across the front. Terry Wilson could be good, that’s to be determined. Saturday is a good litmus test on how Wilson will fare under center this season. He was out all last season with a knee injury, so we’ll see how he performs this season starting Saturday against a tough defense. Asim Rose rushed for 826 yards and 6 TDs last season and Kavosley Smoke rushed for 616 yards and 6 TDs. Both are back. Mark Stoops always has good defenses.

So I see this as a challenging first game for the Tigers. I like them to prevail, but I see this close for most of the game. But all you have to do this season is survive a conference game and advance.

Wow, O lost a lot off of last year’s team in an epic National Championship season in Baton Rouge. Heisman Trophy winner Joe Burrow is the starting quarterback for the Cincinnati Bengals, and Myles Brennan takes over under center. I like Brennan, I see him as having a successful season, While the Tigers lost a lot, the cupboard isn’t bare. O has recruited phenomenally well. He lost both his defensive coordinator, Dave Aranda, who took the head job at Baylor, and his offensive guru, Joe Brady, who took over as offensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers under former Baylor coach Matt Rhule. But O hired some good coaches to replace them and brought in another young stud to help “Steve Enminger.” Russ Calloway will be an offensive analyst and O expects him to help Ensminger create another explosive offense.Calloway, former Alabama assistant and UAB head coach Neil Calloway’s son, has done good things at Samford. O expects nothing less from the 32 year old down on his Bayou. Mississippi State has the interesting, to say the least, Mike Leach as its head coach now. Leach and Lane Kiffin at Ole Miss make the SEC that much more interesting. Not only are they good coaches, they are greatt personalities. Leach will have dynamic offenses. I like the Bengal Tigers in Death Valley, but I like it close for a while.

The interesting thing for Georgia is who will be at quarterback, USC transfer JT Daniels or redshirt freshman D’Wan Mathis. They should both play most likely until Kirby Smart can figure out who his number one guy is. He’ll need to figure it out pretty quickly as the Auburn Tigers come to Sanford Stadium next Saturday, October 3rd. I see Georgia handling Arkansas pretty easily as Coach Sam Pittman, the former Georgia offensive line coach, is having to recuperate a dysfunctional program from the last several years.

Kyle Trask was selected first team All-SEC. He should have a terrific season if he stays upright and healthy. The Gators are expecting a big season in year 3 under Dan Mullen with high hopes to win the SEC East and make it to the playoff. They’ve got to get by Georgia again, and Tennessee is no slouch this season, but the material is there. Lane Kiffin will give Ole Miss fans an exciting brand of football. He’s the other part of the dynamic duo in the state of Mississippi. I like Florida to win, but I like it closer than anticipated. John Rhys-Plumlee is a spectacular talent at quarterback for the Rebels, but I’m hearing that Matt Corrall could get the start instead. That’s not confirmed though..

This should be called the “Opt Out Game.” Vanderbilt lost 4 offensive linemen who decided not to play this season along with a kicker. A&M lost 4 or 5 players including their best wide receiver and their best defensive player. I think Kellen Mond will be pretty good, not entirely sold on him. The Commodores return 10 of 11 starters on defense. True freshman Ken Seals will be the starting quarterback for the Dores. The offensive line is better than it looked a month ago, but there is some youth there. I like the Commodores to do better than expected and their defense to keep’em in it for a while.

***Some more good news to report***

From a report by ESPN reporters Heather Dinich and Kyle Bonagura, the PAC-12 has announced that it will commence a 7 game conference schedule beginning Friday, November 6th. The PAC-12 Championship game will take place on Friday, December 18th at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, which has a capacity of 65,000, but it will be interesting to see if there are some fans at the game or any for that matter.

Nonetheless, more excellent news for college football. More teams competing for bowl games, elite bowl games, and the College Football Playoff.

Week 2 predictions in the National Football League, Stanley Cup Finals Prediction

Last night Baker Mayfield and Cleveland just outlasted Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals, 35-30. It was a superb effort by Joe and his teammates on the road and despite the fact there were only 5,000 fans at FirstEnergy Stadium, they were loud. Joe and his team are going to win some games this season and so are Mayfield and his team. There was some good talent on the field last night.

College Football Week 3, Previews, predictions, Burrow @ Mayfield tonight

We’re getting closer and closer to the SEC season. Next Saturday, 9-26, it kicks off with all 14 teams playing. Alabama’s opponent, Missouri, has several cases of corona on their team, so they’re a little hamstrung heading into their game with the No.2 Crimson Tide. Bama is on the road and the Auburn Tigers are at home versus Kentucky. Auburn’s had to deal with cases, but they seem to have recovered and the Tigers could be close to or at full strength come next Saturday. The Crimson Tide has not reported any case recently. There were a lot on campus, so we’ll see how that develops this week. Alabama is @ Missouri at 6 PM CT next Saturday on ESPN. The No.8 Tigers host No. 23 Kentucky at 11 AM CT next Saturday on the SEC Network. So, getting closer to being back to spectacular football Saturday.

The Big Ten announced Tuesday that they’ll start playing games the weekend of Friday, October 23rd. They do have Friday Night games in the Big Ten, so there may be one scheduled. I read where ESPN reporter Heather Dinich is reporting that the PAC-12 could be ready to start back up at the end of October. They’ve had many restrictions on the West Coast due to COVID but it’s getting better out there. The fires have been a major issue in California and this week Oregon and Washington had disastrous situations with tragic loss of life and millions of acres burned. So hoping for the best that the West Coast can get that under control and keep their people safe. The plan is to possibly start at the end of October according to Dinich.

This week there’s a slate of games that look like they could be promising. What I was most impressed about last Saturday was the play of the Sun Belt Conference. The Ragin Cajuns of Louisiana went to Iowa State and upset the No.23 Hawkeyes, an 11 1/2 point favorite, 31-14. And there was no doubt. Just big play after big play. A 95 yard kickoff return, an 83 yard punt return and a 70 yard TD pass. This team looks for real. Then Arkansas State went to Kansas State and upset the Wildcats, 35-31, on a 20 yard TD pass with 40 seconds left in the game. Kansas State was a 10 1/2 point favorite. Last Saturday Night, Coastal Carolina went to Kansas and upset the 6 1/2 point favorite Jayhawks, 38-23, another convincing victory. So it was an impressive Saturday put on by the Sun Belt.

There are some postponements this Saturday. BYU had an outbreak last week, so their game with Army has been postponed. They’re going to make it up, not sure when. Virginia Tech had several positive tests, so they postponed their game with UVA. I’m sure they’ll want to make that up as it is an ACC and huge rivalry game. Both those games would have been fun to watch, so hoping they’ll be made up. And just yesterday, Charlotte canceled their game with No. 12 UNC. UNC impressively defeated Syracuse in week 1, 31-6, and they have an excellent team, but they’ll have to wait another week to play. Actually they’re not scheduled to play next Saturday, but they”ll probably try to get an opponent. Their next scheduled game is Saturday, October 3rd, @ Boston College. They’ve got a stellar team, so I know they’ll want to play ASAP.

Here’s a look at this week’s action.

I like a close game between Joe Burrow and the Bengals and Baker Mayfield and the Browns. The 2 former Heisman Trophy winners rely on their defenses as they’re both a little rusty right now with Burrow and the Bengals losing to the Indy Colts last Sunday, 16-13, and Mayfield and the Browns getting blasted by the Ravens last Sunday, 38-6. I’ll take the Browns at home barely. Mayfield hadn’t shown much as a pro. Burrow is trying to figure it out in his second start.

Rest of NFL Predictions

The 120th U.S. Open excitingly commences tomorrow

Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, New York, about 30 minutes south of New York City, hosts the 120th United States Open for the 6th time. Only Oakmont in Pennsylvania and Baltusrol in New Jersey have hosted more Opens. Oakmont hosted its ninth in 2016, won by Dustin Johnson, the 17-2 favorite at this U.S. Open, and Baltusrol has hosted the Open 7 times.

The course measures 7,477 yards and will play to a Par 70. It’s a beast, and the players will be severely challenged on the tight, multiple dogleg holes with rough 3 to 5 inches if not more. and the severely sloping, tiered Poa Annua and Bent grass greens which will by Stimping at 13. Treacherous putting conditions are in store with drier weather this week and winds leading to harder putting surface conditions.

The previous 5 winners have had to survive this course. Bobby Jones won in 1929 at +6, Billy Casper won in 1959 at +2, Hale Irwin won in 1974, labeled “The Massacre at Winged Foot,” at +7, Fuzzy Zoeller won in 1984 at -4, and Geoff Ogilvy won in 2006 at +5.

In 1974, with players demoralized by the difficulty of the course and critical of it, USGA president Sandy Tatum was asked why would they want to demoralize the players with a course playing like this. He said famously, “We’re not trying to humiliate the best players in the world. We’re simply trying to identify them.” Irwin won 3 Opens in his Hall of Fame career. Not anything close to as difficult as Winged Foot in 1974.

The defending champion is Gary Woodland. Woodland, who shot -13 at Pebble Beach last year, defeating 2017 and 2018 champion Brooks Koepka by 3 shots. Koepka was going for an unprecedented 3rd straight U.S. Open, but was denied by Woodland’s stellar play and tremendous putting. Always have to putt well to win a Major. Koepka is not playing this week as he’s still struggling with a knee injury he suffered in October of last year.

Key tee times Thursday

Going off Number 1

6:56 A.M. CT-Hideki Matsuyama, Japan, Patrick Reed, Houston, Jordan Spieth, Dallas. Not sure if there is a contender in this group, possibly Matsuyama and Reed. Matsuyama is not a great putter so that could keep him out of contention, but Reed is a good putter, so if he can hit it straighter or curve it on all the doglegs, he could have a shot. I want Spieth to contend, I’m just not seeing it right now.

7:07 A.M. CT-Collin Morikawa, La Canada Flintridge, California, Justin Thomas, Louisville, Tiger Woods, Jupiter, FL. Certainly Justin and Morikawa are in the hunt. I’m not seeing it with Tiger. Just not playing well enough right now. If Morikawa and Justin putt well, they’ve got a real shot. Justin is 14-1, Woods is 40-1.

7:18 A.M. CT-Matt Kuchar, Sea Island, GA., Lucas Glover, Jupiter, FL., Graeme McDowell, Northern Ireland. I don’t see any of these 3 seriously competing, but Glover won the 2009 Open at Bethpage Black, and McDowell won the 2010 Open at Pebble Beach.

11:54 A.M. CT-Joaquin Niemann, Chile, Sungjae Im, South Korea, Cameron Champ, Sacramento, CA. These guys are possible. They’ve all won on tour and Champ competed well at the PGA. Not seeing it completely though.

12:05 P.M. CT-Gary Woodland, Topeka, KS., Andy Ogletree, Little Rock, Shane Lowry, Republic of Ireland. You’ve got the defending U.S. Open champion and the present Open Championship champion in this group along with the U.S. Amateur champion, so there’s a chance at least Woodland and Lowry can get in the hunt. Not convinced they’re playing well enough now though.

12:16 P.M. CT-Bryson DeChambeau, Clovis, CA., Dustin Johnson, Jupiter, FL, Tony Finau, Salt Lake City. Certainly can see a winner out of this group. DeChambeu’s issue will be keeping it in play off the tee. If he’s driving it well, he’s a good putter, so he’ll have a shot. Dustin has all the shots, and is on a tear after winning the Northern Trust and then the Tour Championship in the Fed Ex Playoffs and earning the Fed Ex Cup and being voted PGA Tour Player of the Year on Monday. He’s the favorite at 17-2. Finau finishes in the top 10 in Majors, but can’t seem to close a deal. That’s always the question with him and he hasn’t proven he can.

12:27 P.M. CT- Mickelson, Rancho Santa Fe, CA., Paul Casey, England, Jon Rahm, Spain. Rahm is 10-1. Mickelson is 70-1 at 50 years old. The last 50 year old to have a shot to win it was 100 years ago, when Harry Vardon had a 5 shot lead with 5 to play in the 1920 Open at Inverness Golf Club in Toledo, but then gave it away down the stretch and lost in a playoff. So the odds aren’t in FIGJAM’s favor. Casey, maybe a top 10.

12:38 P.M. CT-Rickie Fowler, Murrieta, CA., Matthew Wolff, Agoura Hills, CA., Viktor Hovland, Norway. Two bright young stars in the game in Wolff, who is 21, and Hovland, who’s 22 and turns 23 on Friday, who both have a shot. Their youth might catch up to them on Sunday. I like them both here though. They’re both strong mentally and could win. Fowler is an underachiever with 5 tour victories and no majors at 31 years old. Don’t see him getting it done this year either.

Teeing off on No.10

6:56 A.M. CT-Webb Simpson, Charlotte, N.C., Sergio Garcia, Spain, Jason Day, Australia. I see Webb getting in the hunt, but not Garcia. Day, possible.

7:07 A.M.-Rory, Northern Ireland, Adam Scott, Australia, Justin Rose, England. Rory certainly a possibility. Scott could be in the hunt, Rose hasn’t really gotten it together since the restart or even before the postponement, but he is the 2013 U.S. Open Champion at Merion Golf Club, so he’s got the mentality to win at Winged Foot.

7:18 A.M. CT-Ian Poulter, England, Patrick Cantlay, Jupiter, FL., Steve Stricker-A lot of guys like living in Jupiter that’s for sure. The Jupiter native is the only one who has a shot in this threesome and Cantlay certainly has a shot.

11:54 A.M. CT-Lee Westwood, England, James Sugrue, Republic of Ireland, Bubba Watson, Bagdad, FL. Not seeing a winner in this group, though Bubba has been pretty competitive lately and might have a shot the way he can work the ball and if he’s putting well.

12:05 P.M. CT-Tommy Fleetwood, England, Kevin Kisner, Aiken, S.C., Abraham Ancer, Mexico. This is an interesting group. Fleetwood shot a 63 on Sunday at Shinnecock in 2018 to challenge Koepka falling a shot short. Kisner seems like he could break through at some point, but he hasn’t yet. Ancer is a solid player at 29 and may get a breakthrough. He can be in the hunt.

12:27 P.M,. CT-Louis Oosthuizen, South Africa, Zach Johnson, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Keegan Bradley, Woodstock, Vermont. Louis can maybe get in the hunt. He’s played pretty well lately and he won the 2010 Open Championship so has Major pedigree. Zach won the 2007 Masters and the 2015 Open Championship denying Jordan Spieth his third major in a row that year, so he’s capable of playing well. Bradley hasn’t done a lot since winning the PGA Championship in 2011.

12:38 P.M. CT-Billy Horschel, Ponte Vedra Beach, FL., Xander Schauffele, San Diego, Brandt Snedeker, Nashville. Schauffele is 14-1, so he’s a favorite. Knocking on the door. Horschel is playing pretty good golf right now. Would love to see Brandt win it, but it’ll be hard for him. Just not playing great right now but you never know.

Key Holes

There are so many spectacular and difficult holes on this course, but I’ve paired it down to 6 crucial ones.

No.1, 451 yards, par 4-Right to left dogleg with a heckuva difficult green, with many tiers and slopes. Tied for the toughest hole on the course in 2006 with No.18.

No.3, 243 yards, Par 3. 1959 U.S. Open Champion Billy Casper laid up all 4 days here in winning the Open. There are challenging, deep bunkers on this hole like there are on many holes of this beast of a course. The green is sloping and tiered again, leading to a tough 2 putt if you’re not where you need to be on the green.

No.12, 633 yards, Par 5-The designer, A.W. Tillinghast made this a double dogleg. Putting surface again is tiered and highly difficult. Getting a birdie here is great, par is solid.

No.16- 498 yards, Par 4-These last 3 holes may be the toughest in Major Championship golf. Survival is the key. Sixteen is a sharp dogleg right to left. The tee shot, according to Tillinghast, back in the day, has to be played to the right center to have a reasonable shot at reaching the green on approach.

No.17, 504 yards, Par 4. Dogleg left to right with a narrow fairway. Bunkers could be in play off the tee with several on the right hand side. The green has a mound on the center right side. Two deep bunkers guard the left and one large deep one guards the right side of the green.

No.18, 469 yards, Par 4. The toughest hole on the course in 2006 along with No.1. Ask FIGJAM, who inexplicably used a driver with a 1 shot lead and his it left into the hospitality tent and doubled the hole to lose to Ogilvy by a shot. He called himself an idiot after the round. I would agree with that assessment. He’s finished runner-up a record 6 times at the Open. Dogleg right to left with tee shots running through the rough causing major problems for the player’s second shot. The green is 6 feet in elevation and has a false front that guards the green and is the most severe on the course. If the player doesn’t clear it, he’s back down in the fairway staring at bogey or maybe worse. Par if he makes a spectacular chip. Should be riveting on Sunday.

Weather;

Perfect.

Thursday, 78, Mostly Cloudy, Wind SW 9 MPH.

Friday, 65, Mostly cloudy. Wind N 14.

Saturday, Partly Sunny, 65, Wind NNE 12.

Sunday, 65, Mostly Sunny, Wind NE 11.

Wind certainly a factor, and while it’ll be sunny on Sunday, the players aren’t going to be in sunny moods because of this beast of a course. Expect the unexpected on Sunday. It will be some serious theater.

Winner

I keep going with this guy. I see it between Dustin, Justin, Rahm, Xander Schauffele and maybe Rory. I’ll take the 25 year old from Spain. The way he played at Olympia Fields at the BMW Championship in what was set up as a U.S. Open course, convinced me that he can win a major. I like him surviving Winged Foot. Give me the Spaniard at the 120th.

Predictions for the Women’s and Men’s US Open Finals today and tomorrow

Today

No.4 Naomi Osaka (Japan) VS. Victoria Azerenka

(Belarus)

Arthur Ashe Stadium, Flushing Meadows, N.Y.

3 PM CT

ESPN

Osaka won the 2018 U.S, Open defeating Serena Williams in a highly controversial match due to Williams going ballistic after being penalized points for getting coaching from her box. Osaka won, but got booed by the fans at the trophy ceremony because of the debacle that Serena caused. They were all pulling for Williams and she instigated the whole disastrous situation even though she tried to calm down the fans afterwards. It was a catastrophe, but she looked good in winning her first Slam. She also won the 2019 Australian Open. The 22 year old from Osaka, Japan is a talent.

But I’m going to take the 31 year old from Minsk, Belarus. She won the Australian Open in 2012 and 2013, but some personal issues, a custody battle with her boyfriend over their son, have thrown her off a bit in recent years. But she gained custody of her son recently and has also gotten it back together on the court. After losing the first set to Serena 1-6 in the semifinals, she came back and defeated Williams, 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 and wore Williams out in the process. It was a heckuva a match with both women pounding the ball back and forth and Azerenka running Williams every which way on the court. She was a picture of energy, precision and toughness. I like this match to be close, but they were supposed to play in the finals of the Western and Southern Open 2 weeks ago at Flushing Meadows , but Osaka defaulted claiming she had an injury. I like the fact that Azarenka wanted to play and is having the time of her life playing right now. Give me the 31 year old from Belarus. If you want to take a break from football, this is an exciting match to watch.

The 23 year old from Hamburg, Germany is the No.7 player in the world and has a very bright future competing with the Big 3 now, Djokovic, Nadal and Federer, and becoming an elite winner of Majors in the future.

But I’m going to take the 27 year old from Wiener Neustadt, Austria. He is the No.3 player in the world and is in his fourth Grand Slam Final. He was runner up to Rafa at Roland Garros in the French Open in 2018 and 2019, and fell in the finals to Novak at the Australian Open in January of this year in 5 sets after being ahead 2 sets to 1. He’s ready to take it to the next level. Awesome guy too. Humble, motivated.

He defeated a hard hitting No.3 seed, Daniil Medvedev of Russia, the fifth ranked player in the world, 6-2, 7-6 (9-7), 7-6 (7-5). I like this talent. He’s ready to challenge Djoker and Rafa in Majors, and, if Roger Federer can come back from his knee injury, at 38 years old, him too. I’ll take the Austrian.

Thiem over Zverev 7-5, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4

UAB faces a major challenge in Week 2, Previews, predictions for Week 2 College Football

The UAB Blazers are coming off a 45-35 victory over Central Arkansas last Thursday Night at Legion Field and are now in South Beach for game 2. They get another Thursday Night game as they play at the Miami Hurricanes. The Blazers want to make a statement, and if they could pull this off, with many college football fans watching who aren’t watching the Texans @ the Chiefs, that would put this program firmly in the national picture mix and in the national poll mix. But this is quite a mountain to climb. Here’s a look at UAB’s game at Miami and other interesting contests in Week 2 of College Football.

Last week: 5-1-

Navy ran into a juggernaut Monday Night against BYU, losing 55-3. Did not see that coming. BYU looks very strong.

UAB can score some points, no doubt about it. Spencer Brown is an excellent running back. He ran for a buck 27 last week and a TD against Central Arkansas. Jermaine Brown Jr. looks talented too. He ran for 74 yards and a TD last Thursday. Luscious Stanley is another talented back. Tyler Johnston completed 17 of 25 passes for 143 yards, 2 TDs and an int. Austin Watkins is a stellar receiver. He caught 7 passes for 72 yards last week against Central Arkansas. The offensive line is veteran and physical. But the defense was pretty suspect overall last Thursday.

Tonight, the Blazers try to corral former Houston Cougar star quarterback D’Eriq King. He’s a 1,500 yard rusher and 1,500 yard passer type player. Quite a weapon. Miami has pretty strong defense this season as well. They’ve got a much offensive arsenal this season than last and King is a game changer.

I’ll have to go with the home team in this one. Hoping the Blazers can surprise, but not seeing it tonight.

The Sooners are once again breaking in a new quarterback after Baker Mayfield, Kyler Murray and Jalen Hurts all excelled. Spencer Rattler, a 5 star recruit 2 years ago, takes over. I expect the Sooners to have no problem moving the football as usual. Defense is always the issue at OU. If they can figure out their defense under 2nd year coordinator Alex Grinch, who is solid, they can go all the way one year. They had some defections and opt outs on their defensive front, so we’ll see how that pans out in the Big 12 and on the national stage. Bob Petrino is in his first year at Missouri State. Rude debut for him.

Mack Brown has’em excited in Chapel Hill. He has a top 10 recruiting class in 2021 so far, and he’s got a stud quarterback in sophomore Sam Howell. They went 7-6 last year and won the Military Bowl over Temple, 55-13. I’m still not a big believer in Brown though. He had Smoothie Bars at Texas for practice when he was coaching there. Maybe back in Chapel Hill, he’s in familiar territory and will excel. Not buying it yet though.

After defeating Georgia in the 2019 Sugar Bowl, quarterback Sam Ehlinger declared Texas was ready to be elite again. It didn’t happen last season as the running back position and secondary were decimated by injuries. Texas has a lot to prove this season and Ehinger is back for his senior campaign. I like Texas to be a factor this season. Are they playoff worthy? Let’s see them play Big 12 games and decide, particularly the Red River Rivalry October 18th vs the Sooners. The most interesting thing about this game may be listening to the great Andre Ware’s commentary.

App State was a powerhouse under Scott Satterfield, who’s now at Louisville, and last season under Eli Drinkwitz, who’s now at Missouri. They went 13-1 last season and defeated UAB, 31-17, in the R&L Carriers New Orleans Bowl under interim coach Shawn Clark. Clark is now the full time head coach. I like this juggernaut to keep it cookin this season.
