Coach Mason adds Commitment No.12

Texas linebacker Dimitri Moore is a Commodore

Texas linebacker Dimitri Moore is a Commodore

Coach Mason and his staff picked up a commitment yesterday from 87 three-star linebacker Dimitri Moore out of Cedar Hill High School in Texas.

The 6’3″, 205 inside linebacker dropped anchor over offers from finalists Colorado, Missouri, Texas Tech and Minnesota. Dimitri held over two dozen offers including Arkansas and Utah.

Watched Dimitri’s film and he’s very fast in such an easy way. He makes running look easy and he can move. Dimitri’s a tackling machine. As a junior, Dimitri posted 44 tackles, 6.5 for loss, four sacks and a fumble recovery. while missing four games due to an injury. This fall, Dimitri has posted 56 total tackles, 10 for loss, three sacks and an interception for the 6-2 Cedar Hill Longhorns.

Dimitri joins fellow Texas solid three star commitments Ranchview defensive end Dayo Odeyingbo and Midland receiver McLane Mannix in the 2017 class.

As a very good friend of mine, who’s a VU grad and outstanding attorney, told me an older VU grad and outstanding attorney told him, “We don’t need any more lawyers, we need linebackers!”

We have them with more on the way in 2017.

Another super pickup by Derek and the staff. Hopefully we’ll get some more pops this week and then beat Auburn!

Auburn-Ole Miss, Clemson-FSU, Florida-Georgia headline week 9

Stanton Truitt has become another weapon in the Auburn offense

Stanton Truitt has become another weapon in the Auburn offense

The No. 15 Auburn Tigers are on a roll without a doubt. The defense has been stellar all season and the offense has found its rhythm in the past three weeks. The Tigers are dangerous. They head into Oxford with a head of steam, while the Rebs are reeling.

Clemson visits the Noles on Saturday Night. While FSU may not be playing up to FSU standards, this should be a hard fought, physically demanding game. Can Deshaun Watson and the Tigers survive and advance once again. That’s the question. They’ll have their hands full at Doak-Campbell Stadium.

The Cocktail bash is Saturday in Jacksonville. Can Luke Del Rio and the Florida Gators  get the job done to remain in first place in the SEC East. Can Kirby Smart find some offense against the Gators. Can Nick Chubb and Sony Michel have their way against a pretty stout defense. This one is always unpredictable.

So some stuff to be decided this weekend as we head into November when the games are even more intense and it’s total crunch time in the SEC and nationally.

Here’s are previews and predictions for this weekend’s action.

Last Week: 18-9

Overall: 126-56 (69%)

No. 15 Auburn (5-2) @ Ole Miss (3-4)

6:15 PM CT/7:15 PM ET, SEC Network

Two teams going in opposite directions. The Rebels are beaten up and tired. The Tigers are peaking. Kerryon Johnson will play, so it’ll be tough for the Land Shark defense to stop the Johnson-Pettway combo along with Stanton Truitt, Kam Martin and the rest of the offensive arsenal. Sean White has figured it out. The move to Rhett Lashlee as play caller has really worked out well for Gus. Kevin Steele has the defense clicking. A lot of really good football players on the AU defense.

Auburn 35, Ole Miss 24

No. 3 Clemson (7-0) @ No. 12 Florida State (5-2)

7 PM CT/8 PM ET, ABC

This should be a war, but I like Deshaun and Clemson to survive and advance.

Clemson 34, FSU 31

No. 14 Florida (5-1) vs Georgia (4-3)

2:30 PM CT/3:30 PM ET, CBS

If Chubb and Michel can get it going, Georgia has a chance. But the Gators are tough on defense and rested from a week off. Like Coach Mac and his team to keep advancing in the SEC.

Gators 34, Dawgs 28

No. 18 Tennessee (5-2) @ South Carolina (3-4)

6:15 PM CT/7:15 PM ET, ESPN2

Part of me thinks the Vols are reeling right now also after losing a tough overtime game at A&M and then getting shellacked by the Crimson Tide in Neyland Stadium. But they’re not out of it. They’ll take care of business in Columbia. Will doesn’t have the team he wants yet, but I see them getting better and better in the upcoming years. They’ll give the Vols a pretty good game Saturday Night.

Vols 31, Gamecocks 24

New Mexico State (2-4) @ No.9 Texas A&M (6-1)

6:30 PM CT/7:30 PM ET, ESPNU

Like the Aggies to really take care of business here. With games @ State, Ole Miss and LSU at home left, along with a kick in against Texas San Antonio, the Aggies are very much alive in the SEC West. A lot can happen in November.

A&M 56, Lobos 7

Kentucky (4-3) @ Missouri (2-5)

11 AM CT/Noon ET, SEC Network

I’m going with what would appear to be an upset, but it’s not. The Tigers are a 5 1/2 point favorite.

Missouri 38, Kentucky 30

Samford (6-1) @ Mississippi State (2-5)

2:30 PM CT/3:30 PM ET, SEC Network

Samford is having a really good year, but it’ll be tough in Starkvegas. The Bulldogs of Mississippi State take care of business in Davis-Wade Stadium.

State 45, Samford 24

No. 7 Nebraska (7-0) @ No. 11 Wisconsin (5-2)

6 PM CT/7 PM ET, ESPN

Like the Badgers to handle an overrated Nebraska team.

Badgers 31, Huskers 24

No.4 Washington (7-0) @ No. 17 Utah (7-1)

2:30 PM CT/3:30 PM ET, Fox Sports 1

Super game in the Pac-12 with major national implications involved. Like Chris Peterson and his Huskies to advance in a challenging trip to Salt Lake. Washington quarterback Jake Browning has thrown for 26 touchdowns against only 2 interceptions. Everybody talks about Lamar Jackson, but Browning is putting up superb numbers in Seattle.

Huskies 31, Utes 28

No. 2 Michigan (7-0) @ Michigan State (2-5)

11 AM CT/Noon ET, ESPN

Michigan State has knocked off the giants before, including last year when they upset both Michigan and Ohio State. But not this time. The Wolverines handle business in East Lansing.

Jim 45, Sparty 21

No.5 Louisville (6-1) @ Virginia (2-5)

11 AM CT/Noon ET, ABC

The Lamar Jackson freight train keeps on rolling, this time through Cville.

Louisville 48, UVA 14

Coach Yeager talks about his team, Ramsay and the playoffs

Sean Elmore and his teammates will have to step up the clutchness once again Friday Night versus Ramsay

Sean Elmore and his teammates will have to step up the clutchness once again Friday Night versus Ramsay

Hamp Sisson and Sean Elmore were superbly clutch last Friday Night in the Mountain Brook Spartans’ 24-17 victory over Huffman, a victory that secured the Spartans second place in Class 7A, Region 3 and enabled the Spartans to host a first round home game in the Class 7A playoffs.

Sisson connected with Elmore on a 10 yard TD pass on fourth and goal with 5 minutes left in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 17 and the Spartans scored another late TD on a Harold Joiner 4 yard run with 1:25 left to secure the victory and move to 7-2 overall and 5-2 in the region with their only losses coming on the road to Hoover and Vestavia Hills.

The Spartans will open postseason play facing James Clemmons of Huntsville-Gadsden City loser this Friday Night on Friday, Nov. 4th at 7 PM @Spartan Stadium. If the Spartans were to beat Clemmons or Gadsden City, they would play the Oak Mountain-Hewitt-Trussville winner in the second round. If Oak Mountain wins, Mountain Brook would be at home for round 2, but if Hewitt wins, the Spartans would travel, but not very far, which Yeager likes.

But first things first for Coach Yeager and his team. The Spartans play an outstanding Ramsay team tomorrow night at Spartan Stadium @ 7. Yeager says this Ramsay team is going to be battling it out with Minor to be the team from the North in the Super 7 for Class 6A, which will be played at Jordan-Hare Stadium in Auburn this year Nov. 30th-Dec. 2nd.

Yeager calls the Rams quarterback Baniko Harley, a 6’2″, 190 pound senior, a stellar passer and runner. Harley is an FBS prospect with offers from many mid major programs, and some higher level programs. Yeager says a lot of colleges are recruiting him as an athlete, but he is a really good quarterback and he’s holding out for a quarterback offer. Yeager says he’ll be a very good quarterback  in college.  Yeager calls Harley superb and a heckuva challenge for the Spartans defense. Offensive guard Andrew Robinson is 6’1″, 290 and is outstanding also according to Yeager. He’s received offers from Samford and some others, but Yeager says that his own defensive coordinator, Bert Newton, says Robinson is the closest thing to William Vlachos that he’s seen. Vlachos was a standout offensive lineman for Mountain Brook and center at the University of Alabama, where he won two national championships in 2009 and 2011.

Yeager says the Rams have returned four punts for TDs, two kickoffs for TDs, they have two scoop and scores on defense, and three ints they’ve taken to the house. Sounds similar to that group in Tuscaloosa which has 12 non-offensive touchdowns.

So Yeager and his coaches got their players attention after the players watched five clips of Ramsay film on Sunday afternoon.

As far as the Spartans making a run this year and going deep and in the playoffs really being special, Yeager says, “We have clicked on the defensive side one week and on the offensive side on another week. This team is hungry and wants to be special. We have been peaking, but if these guys want to be really special, now is the time to peak.”

Kickoff Thursday is at 7 PM @ Spartan Stadium.

Update:

Spartans defeat Ramsay, 19-13, at Spartan Stadium. Spartans finish season 8-2. Really good victory over a Ramsay team whose only loss this season was to a very good 7-1 Grayson, Georgia team that plays @ Hoover tomorrow night on ESPNU @ 7 PM.  Ramsay dropped to 8-2.

Spartans open the playoffs @ home next Friday Night, Nov. 4th,  @ 7 PM vs. the Gadsden City Titans. The Titans finished the season 5-5 and won their final game tonight, 49-21, over Huntsville. Preview with Coach Yeager early next week.

TV: Golf Channel, Wednesday-Saturday 10 PM-3 AM CT/11 PM-4 AM ET. You either need to load up on the Royal Cup, work the afternoon shift or tape it. I’ll take the latter option.

I’m going to go with the hottest player in the world at the moment and I’m predicting him to go back to back. The 23 year old University of Alabama player shot a 64 to come back from a three shot deficit last week heading into the fourth round in Malaysia, to capture the CIMB Classic by 3 shots over Hideki Matsuyama. The Louisville, Kentucky native hit a 290 yard three wood to 35 feet for eagle on the par 5, 10th. He two putted for birdie. He posted eight birdies and no bogeys in his final round. This young gun looks elite to me with major championships in the future. He went back to back at the CIMB Classic in consecutive years and I see him going back to back in consecutive weeks. I like the fact that this will be his third week in a row to play. I picked him two weeks ago at the Safeway Open and he finished tied for eighth. I’m going back to the well this week. It was a tough choice between this player and Patrick Reed, but I’ll go with JT.

Sanderson Farms Championship

Country Club of Jackson (MS), 7,421 yards, par 72

TV: Thursday-Sunday, Golf Channel, 1:30-4:30 PM CT/2:30-5:30 PM ET

While JT won the national championship in 2013 at the University of Alabama, this 24 year old sank a 22 foot eagle putt on the 17th hole at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kansas in 2014 to help Alabama capture back to back national championships. He won on the Web.com tour last year at the Rex Hospital Open in Raleigh, N.C., and finished 10th this past year in the 25, the 25 top money winners on the Web,com tour who automatically qualify for the PGA Tour the following year. At the Safeway Open two weeks ago, he finished tied 22nd. I decided on this young guy over former University of Alabama golfer Robby Shelton and former Auburn golfer Patton Kizzire, who finished second two weeks ago at the Safeway Open. But I’m going with this young guy to capture his first title on the PGA tour. His uncle, Craig, is a very good friend of mine, so I’d like to see him get it done for his uncle as well.

NBA Finals Prediction

With the NBA regular season tipping off tonight, I’m going to go against the grain and pick against the consensus pick this year to win the title.

The Warriors with Kevin Durant and Steph Curry are just too good to be true for me. People are predicting they could break their 2015-16 NBA record 73 victories this season. Too much hype. I’m already tired of the Warriors.

So I’m going to take the tried and true franchise with a starting five of Tony Parker, Danny Green, Kawhi Leonard and Pau Gasol and a bench featuring Manu Ginobili, Patty Mills and David Lee among others. It’s a super shooting, rebounding and defensive team with a superb coach in Greg Popovich. That’s a heckuva group.I like the Spurs to win their sixth NBA championship in 18 years. Their first was 1999. No Tim Duncan. The great BIg Fundamental retired with 5 championships, but this franchise keeps on cookin.

Analysis/Prediction

The Cubs have the edge in hitting and probably starting pitching though I like Cleveland’s starters as well. Andrew Miller is the key guy to me for the Indians out of the pen. In the postseason, Miller has thrown 11 2/3 innings in middle relief and allowed no runs with 21 K’s. You add stellar closer Cody Allen, who has thrown 7 2/3 innings of scoreless ball with 12 strikeouts and that’s quite a potent combination that can win you a championship. They’ll need some help of course from the starters and the rest of the bullpen, but these two can carry their team. Cleveland is a base stealing team, too. I like that. The long ball will be big, too, and the Cubs can really do that. But I give the edge to Cleveland in the bullpen, the starters to the Cubs. defense and hitting are pretty much a wash. But since the wild card era commenced in  1994, the team with the home field advantage has won the World Series 71% of the time. I like those numbers. The Indians got the home field by virtue of the American League winning the All-Star game 4-2 over the National League. I believe in that league that wins the All-Star game and has home field advantage. I also love what Miller can do and Allen on the backend. The Royals won the world series last year with speed, timely hitting and a superb bullpen. I like the Indians to do the same in 2016.

MVP: Andrew Miller

What I learned about Auburn, Alabama, LSU in College football week 8

Kam Pettway is exploding in 2016

Kam Pettway is exploding in 2016

Auburn

  1. Auburn is a really good football team. The defense has been stellar all season. The front wall led by defensive end Carl Lawson, defensive end Marlon Davidson, defensive tackle Montravius Adams, defensive tackle Davaroe Lawrence  and others is superb. They dominate. They are physical, disruptive playmakers. They’re awesome. The back end led by safeties Johnathan “Rudy” Ford, Tray Matthews and corner Carlton Davis is also exceptional. Linebacker Tre Williams is living up to his high four star ranking coming out of high school in Mobile. This is a championship defense. Auburn may have lost two games early, but they are looking highly formidable now.
  2. The offense has hit its stride. When Kerryon Johnson went down three weeks ago with an ankle sprain, Kamryn Pettway stepped right in. He barreled over Mississippi State for 169 yards on 39 carries and three TDs in a 38-14 AU shellacking of the Bulldogs in Starkville, and, this past Saturday, Kam ran for 192 yards on 27 carries with two TDs. Wow. Kerryon should be back soon, maybe this Saturday @ Ole Miss, a 6:15 PM CT kickoff on the SEC Network, and with that and what other guys like Eli Stove, Kam Martin and Stanton Truitt did Saturday against Arkansas, this group is extraordinary. Stove ran for 94 yards on three carries. Stove may be a wide receiver, but these reverses are highly effective, he’s looking like a Quan Bray, Onterio McCalebb type player, so I see him getting more of those chances. Martin ran for 80 yards on 7 carries, Truitt ran for 78 yards and 8 carries and quarterback Sean White ran for 61 yards on 4 carries.
  3. Rhett Lashlee has been a difference maker calling plays for Gus. It’s been huge. Rhett has gotten the offense clicking. He’s doing super.
  4. Kevin Steele can really coach the defense. He’s had a resurgence at Auburn and the players have bought in to what he’s telling them. He’s been superb.
  5. Sean White is a winning quarterback. He won’t make mistakes and he’ll become more of a playmaker as the year progresses.
  6. Auburn is 3-1 in the SEC and 4-2 overall, and the hottest team in the league now. LSU is getting closer.
  7. With games @ Ole Miss this Saturday, vs Vanderbilt, Nov. 5th, on the Plains, @ Georgia, Nov. 12th, vs. Alabama A&M, Nov. 19th and @ Alabama, Nov. 26th, the Tigers have a shot at the West. They can very well control their own destiny, Like all the teams contending for SEC and national honors, the Tigers need to stay healthy. But if they avoid any major injuries, this team has a chance to be really special in November.

Alabama

I wasn’t overly impressed with the Crimson Tide on Saturday against Texas A&M in a 33-14 victory. Jalen Hurts didn’t have his best game. Still believe in Jalen and this team very much, but games looming @ LSU and vs. Auburn look tough now. Losing Eddie Jackson from the defense is a blow, so Hootie Jones and Tony Brown will have to step up. The Tide is @ LSU, Saturday, Nov.5th, home vs State, Nov. 12th, home vs. Chattanooga, Nov. 19th, then the Iron Bowl in Bryant-Denny, Saturday, Nov. 26th.

Still a very talented team, but the Crimson Tide looked more vulnerable Saturday.

LSU

Looked super in their dominating performance, a 38-21 victory over Ole Miss in Death Valley Saturday Night. Leonard Fournette ran for 284 yards and 3 TDs including a 78 yard TD run that was spectacular. If he’s come to play now, watch out. When he’s focused and healthy, he’s phenomenal. Coach O has his Tigers energized and excited about playing and winning football games. He’s been a game changer for LSU. Watch out for these guys. Games left vs. Alabama,  Nov 5th, @Arkansas, Nov. 12th, vs. Florida, Nov. 19th, and @ A&M, Thursday, Nov. 24th. It’s a tough finishing schedule, but this group is superbly talented, so now it’s a three horse race in the West between Auburn, Alabama and L-S-U.

We move to 4-4 with a nice victory over TSU

Nifae Lealao played a fantastic game Saturday Night

Nifae Lealao played a fantastic game Saturday Night

Coach Mason said it after the Tennessee game, that was a pretty good football team we played Saturday Night. Their quarterback, Ronald Butler, is outstanding and they were ranked No.25 in the FCS rankings last week. Good victory for the team, 35-17, over Tennessee State before 31,084 at Vanderbilt Stadium. .

Ralph Webb and Khari Blasingame had huge games. Ralph ran for 125 yards on 9 carries including a long of 49. Our line is doing a superb job opening holes and Ralph is finding them, making cuts and making explosive play after explosive play. Khari ran for 101 yards on 14 carries with 3 TDs. He’s a bulldozer with excellent speed and burstabilty. Ralph is leading the SEC in rushing yards with 855, and has rushed for 6 TDs on the season. He’s averaging 107 yards per game. Khari has rushed for 301 yards and 7 TDs. Really super 1-2 punch in the backfield we have this season. Ralph is the cutter, explosive player. Just excellent. Khari with his 6’1″, 235 pound frame is the power runner who can get the tough yards and get in the end zone. Khari can make explosive plays also, and Ralph can definitely get the tough yards when called upon. Awesome to have’em both. We really had some great versatility in the offense as Coach Ludwig called a superb game. Josh Crawford came in late in the game and rushed for 49 yards on 6 carries. Good to see Josh get involved. He’s an excellent running back. He will help us going forward. Got some other guys involved. Darrius Sims had some nice plays on jet sweeps gaining 50 yards on 5 carries. Like Darrius being involved heavily in the offensive game plan. He can really help us win more games. Trent Sherfield had a 14 yard TD run on a reverse and freshman Donaven Tennyson took a reverse for 13 yards. Dallas Rivers got some carries, too. Dallas can help us in the final four games of the season and most hopefully a bowl game.

I want to give a lot of credit to our offensive line. Coach Cameron Norcross has done an outstanding job with this group and has  developed an excellent unit. We ran for 358 yards on Saturday, which is through the roof good. Center Barrett Gouger, left guard Ean Pfeifer, left tackle Will Holden, right guard Bruno Reagan and right tackle Justin Skule have been terrific this season. Really love this group. Most of them will be back, like a lot of players on this football team next season, which is extremely exciting. But we want to send our seniors, guys like Holden, Oren Burks, Darrius and Torren McGaster, out as bowl winners.

Kyle Shurmur did a nice job under center as well. Kyle was 15-of-23 for 143 yards and a touchdown, a 21 yarder to tight end Jared Pinkney, on a really nice roll out pass to the right. Jared made a nice catch and run to get the 7. Kyle took care of the football well. I still know that Coach Ludwig, Coach Mason and the offensive coaches firmly believe that Kyle can be a big time player for this football team. The broadcasters for the game said they had watched practice and Kyle was making all the throws. They were highly impressed. I know Kyle has it in him to be a big time quarterback for us the rest of this season and in the next two years. I expect that from our talented sophomore, starting against Auburn in two weeks.

We have an off week this week, then go to Auburn for a November 5th game at 11 AM. TV will either be ESPN, ESPN2 or the SEC Network. Will keep you posted when a final decision is made. Huge challenge, but one this team will be ready to take on. I have a lot of belief in these players, this team. Auburn is outstanding it looks like now, they have really hit their stride, and it’s at Auburn, which makes it tough. But what the heck. We just need to go in there knowing we can win, just like we did against Georgia. Coach Mason said in his postgame press conference that he has put his players through two weeks of highly physical, challenging practices and it’s shown. We have played with a lot of mental and physical toughness and everybody on the team is contributing.

Safety Ryan White led the defense with six tackles and made a beautiful knock out forcing a fumble that defensive end Dare Odeyingbo recovered. Good hustle by Dare to get on the football, too. Ryan is a super player for our team. Tre Herndon had four tackles, Ja’karri Thomas had four, Arnold Tarpley had 4, and a half tackle for a loss, and Zach had four and half a tackle for loss. Zach didn’t put together his usual dominating performance, because it was more of a collective effort by our defense. Oren Burks had a tackle for loss and a sack, and Nifae Lealao had a tackle and a half for loss and a sack and a half. Good to see Nifae, who was a 95 four star three years ago out of Sacramento, Cali, make plays for us. Expecting more of that out of Nifae. Our defense allowed some yards from the TSU offense, but they’re pretty good on offense and their quarterback, Butler, is a great passer and runner. But we only gave up 17 points and no points in the second half, so that was good. Torren picked off a pass as well.

This is a young team which is exciting, but we have some really good seniors on it who deserve to go out with a bowl victory. We want to win every game, but we need 2 victories to qualify for the postseason. We’re pretty healthy, so that’s really good right now. Please knock on wood and say a prayer for the health of our team. If we can stay healthy, 2 wins is very attainable and quite possibly more.

After Auburn, we’re @ Missouri Nov. 12th, then we’re home vs Ole Miss Nov. 19th, then home vs the that team from the Eastern part of the state on Nov. 26th. Should be pretty riveting going forward watching our football team. Really excited about the immediate and long term future for this team. Coach Mason and the coaches are recruiting well for 2017 as we have 11 solid commits with a lot of guys very interested in joining the 2017 fold. We don’t have a lot of spots left in this class, so hopefully we’ll finish strong with 15-20 commits, and really explode in 2018 recruiting. Coach Mason and the coaches are working hard on that class as well. We’ll have a full 25 man class in 2018.

I really like our quarterback commit for 2017,  high three-star Jacob Free out of Brantley, Alabama. Through a week and a half ago, Friday, Oct. 14th, Free had completed 97-of-172 passes, 56%, like to see that improve some, for 2,040 yards, 24 TDs  and only four ints. He has rushed for 349 yards and eight TDs. Brantley was 5-3 through Oct. 13th. Jacob is 6’5″, 200. Love that height and Coach James Dobson will get Jacob bigger and stronger without a doubt. He’s already pretty strong, so the foundation is there. With Kyle, Wade Freebeck, Deuce Wallace, if Stank can make it back, and Jacob, we are set at quarterback for the next four to five years. Always need a quarterback in each class and Coach Mason and the coaches have done an excellent job securing one every year. Exciting.

High three star inside linebacker Collin Anderson, 6’2″, 210, from Brooks High School in Killen, Alabama, has 56 tackles through 9 games, 14.5 tackles for loss, 3 sacks, an interception return for a TD, three forced fumbles, a fumble recovery, a blocked punt and a blocked kick. Wow. That makes my head spin it’s so good.  Colin’s team was 6-2 through last Friday. Looks like Zach Cunningham, 2.0.

Solid three star offensive line commit Bryce Bailey, (6’5″, 290) out of Newburgh, Indiana had 23 pancake blocks and is a major part of an offense that has generated 3,244 total yards. Bryce’s team, Castle High School, was 6-3  a week and a half ago and is headed to the Class 5A playoffs this weekend.

Wide receiver James Bostic has 15 receptions for 232 yards. James, out of Cardinal Gibbons High School in Fort Lauderdale, FL., is 6’3″, 200 and will really help us in the future along with the studs we’ll have coming back next year in C.J. Duncan, Trent Sherfield, Caleb Scott, tight end Jared Pinkney, and super freshmen Kalija Lipscomb and Donaven Tennyson. Look for true freshman Jackson Winrow to be a major player for us in the future.

Solid three star safety commit Tae Dailey has 46 tackles, four tackles for loss, two ints, a blocked punt, three forced fumbles, and a fumble recovery for a 7. Tae is from Northside High in Warner Robbins, Georgia, and is 5’11”, 175. Northside knocked off the No. 1 team in Class 6A defeating Lee County, 26-7. Tae posted five tackles, had a tackle for loss and a pass breakup. Northside is 7-1. Excellent football player on an excellent team.

Solid three star Randall Haynie is a 6’0″, 178 pound safety out of Cardinal Gibbons High School in Fort Lauderdale and is teammates with James Bostic. Cardinal Gibbons is 5-1. Randall has 23 tackles, four pass breakups, a fumble recovery, and a blocked punt he recovered and took to the house.

Stellar three star wide receiver/running back McLane Mannix out of Midland High School in Midland, Texas, has 25 receptions for 571 yards, and five TDs. I watched film on McLane and he looks like a Christian McCaffrey-type player, at least the McCaffrey from last year. McLane looks like a game changer for us as an offensive weapon. McLane is 5’10”, 175. Coach Dobson will get McLane bigger. I like the potential for this young player.

Offensive tackle Grant Miller out of perennial Florida powerhouse St. Thomas Aquinas in Fort Lauderdale has 19 knockdown blocks and 6 pancakes this season. Grant has good size at 6’4″, 278 with plenty of room to grow. For an example of what Coach Dobson does with players,  Nifae was 285 coming out of high school and he now weighs 317. Grant has the frame to really get bigger and stronger. Aquinas has posted 2,512 total yards and 1,179 yards rushing. They are 4-2. They are perennial state and national championship teams through the years and look to excel this postseason.

Dayo Odeyingbo, Dare’s little brother, is having a super year at defensive end for Ranchview High School in Irving, Texas. Dayo, a solid three star who is 6’4″, 235, has 42 tackles on the season, 18 tackles for loss, 12 quarterback hurries, seven sacks, 9 pass breakups, three forced fumbles and a fumble recovery for a 7. Looks like a super d end or outside linebacker at VU. Ranchview is 5-2.

Jalen Pinkney, Jared’s little brother from Norcross High School in Georgia, is a solid three star, 6’3″, 225 pound defensive end. Jalen has posted 49 tackles on the season, 16 tackles for loss, 7 sacks, four quarterback hurries and three pass breakups. Another potential d end/OLB for us. With Coach Mason’s defensive schemes, Jalen, like Dayo, and the other guys on the present team, can do both. There’s a lot of versatility in Derek’s defenses. Norcross is 7-0.

Adam Sparks is a 6’0″, 170 pound three star cornerback out of Dutchtown High School in Geismar, Louisiana.  Adam has posted some stellar stats with 19 tackles, two ints, seven pass breakups, two blocked kicks, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery.

What I like about this group besides their super stats is their teams, most all of them, are doing extremely well. They know how to win. That’s important. Adam’s team may not be as stellar, but he’s putting up super numbers.

6’5″, 286 three star offensive tackle Cole Clemens out of Jordan, Utah is high on us, as is four star safety Chaz Ah You, also out of Utah. Chaz is 6’1.5, 199 pounds. Solid three star linebacker Dimitri Moore out of Cedar Hill, Texas, is very interested. Dimitri is 6’2″, 195. Solid three star wide receiver Austin Connor, a 6’0″, 180 player from Dutch Fork High School in South Carolina, is very interested. Safety Nico Bolden, a 6’4″, 190 solid three star safety out of St. Paul, Minnesota, has major interest in us. Three star offensive tackle Jonathan Stewart, 6’8″, 292, is a massive lineman who has major interest in us. Another major target and a guy who has major interest is 6’2″, 175 pound receiver Amonyae Watson out of Newport News, Virginia. Amonyae is not rated by 247 Sports, but is definitely a diamond in the rough. I watched his film, and he caught five bombs for TDs. He’s got length and superb speed. Amonyae would be an outstanding pickup.

There are plenty more. So plenty of recruiting work left to secure the guys we have in February and add these others.

But we’ve got a bowl game to get to first. Nice to have a week off and heal up and be ready to go against Auburn.

Will have some stuff on our basketball team as soon as I can get in touch with Coach Drew. Working on it. Like our core guys we have back in Matthew Fisher-Davis, who’s going to light it up from deep; Riley LeChance, who looks to return to his stellar All-SEC form from his freshman year;Jeff Roberson, a solid blue collar excellent basketball player, a winner; Luke Kornet, who should have a super year from the inside and outside; Joe Toye, who I’m expecting big things out of his sophomore year; Camron Justice, who I’m excited to see light up the building with his shooting; Nolan Cressler, another blue collar, winner of a player, who was a superb shooter a couple of years ago at Cornell and I bet we’ll see that this year out of Nolan; Djery Baptiste is going to give us good size underneath at 6’10”, 240 to go along with Luke. Don’t know about Djery’s offensive skills, but the future is through the roof exciting for him. And we’ll add freshmen point guard Payton Willis and 6’8″ freshman Clevon Brown to the mix this season. Both guys were highly rated. Really excited to see what Coach Drew can do with this team.

And I love the three, 4-star recruits Bryce has committed for 2017. They are 6’9″, 230 pound center Ejike Obinna out of Ashburn, VA.,  6’2″, 180 pound shooting guard Maxwell Evans out of Houston, and 6’1″, 175 point guard Saben Lee out of Tempe, Arizona. Hopefully we’ll get all three to sign in the early signing period between Nov. 9th and Nov. 17th. Need to get these three young men in the fold. Like the team we have and love the future under Coach Drew. See us a tournament team this year, and once you get there, you never know. Like this group.

NFL guys

Casey Hayward and the Chargers claimed the victory yesterday in a riveting game over the Falcons in Atlanta, 33-30, in overtime. The Chargers played an excellent game. Casey recorded 6 tackles and has three ints on the season. Casey has found a home in San Diego. The Chargers moved to 3-4 and are getting better and better every week. Quarterback Philip Rivers, from Athens, Alabama, was awesome in the victory completing 27 of 44 passes for 371 yards and a 7. He was super clutch in the final moments of the game and in overtime.

Jordan Matthews had three receptions for 10 yards as the Eagles beat the previously undefeated Minnesota Vikings, 21-10. On the season, JMatt has 25 receptions for 354 yards and two TDs. JMatt should be lighting it up soon as he and rookie Carson Wentz, from North Dakota State, get more familiar with each other. Wentz and JMatt are going to have a lot of fun playing together. The Eagles moved to 4-2.

Andre Hal is playing tonight for the Texans at the Denver Broncos. Tough assignment for Andre and his team, but doable. The Texans are 4-2 and the Broncos are 4-2. Andre is firmly entrenched at safety for the Texans.

Wesley Johnson is getting to play a lot for the New York Jets. Haven’t seen Wes play yet, but will catch up on him this coming weekend. The Jets moved to 2-5 with a 24-16 victory over the Baltimore Ravens. They have a lot of talent, just need a quarterback to step up.

Jay Cutler may play this weekend for the Bears. The Bears are 1-6 and really struggling. This year may be it for Jay in Chicago. I hope not, but if they’re not going to show him respect, I want him to go somewhere where he is appreciated. Would love to see him reunite with last year’s Bears’ offensive coordinator Adam Gase at Miami. Gase is the head coach of the Dolphins and he and Jay really clicked last year in Chicago. Also, Denver would be an excellent place for Jay. Gary Kubiak is a super coach, and they have an awesome team. Jay would fit in well there.

I hear Spencer Pulley is playing for the San Diego Chargers as well. Will keep an eye out for Spence in the Bolts next game.

Terrific Week 8 in College football

Jonathan Allen and the Crimson Tide defense looks historically good

Jonathan Allen and the Crimson Tide defense looks historically good

Some super games on tap in the SEC, particularly in Tuscaloosa, Auburn and Baton Rouge. Here’s a look at this week’s action along with predictions.

Last Week: 19-7

Overall: 108-47, 70%

No.6 Texas A&M @ No.1 Alabama

2:30 PM CT/3:30 PM ET, CBS

This Crimson Tide machine just keeps on rolling. Jalen Hurts is a phenom, the defense has eight touchdowns and special teams 3. I’ve never seen anything like that at any level. To me, at this point, it’s the Crimson Tide and everybody else. There are a lot of good teams in the SEC and throughout the country, but only one great team. And it resides in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

Alabama 38, A&M 17

No. 17 Arkansas @ No.21 Auburn

5 PM CT/6PM ET, ESPN

I really like Austin Allen at quarterback for the Razorbacks. And I’m major league bullish on play caller and offensive coordinator Dan Enos. He looks like a professor and he calls games like a genius. That victory over Ole Miss last week was highly impressive. Going to take the Hogs in an upset.

Arkansas 35, Auburn 34

No.23 Ole Miss @No. 25 LSU

8 PM CT/9PM ET, ESPN

I still trust Hugh Freeze and I really don’t trust Coach O overall. He’s a tremendous recruiter and a good defensive line coach, but as a head coach, I’m not sold. Leonard Fournette is playing out a soap opera this year. He’s pulling a Jadeveon Clowney/Robert Nkemdiche and not playing hard or playing with any passion as he is only focused on the NFL draft. That could cost him down the road. Neither Clowney nor Nkemdiche have done much so far in the NFL. A lack of effort in college can carry over into the pros. LSU’s best player is running back Derrius Guice. He’s better than Fournette. I’m not sold on LSU’s defensive coordinator. Chad Kelly just needs to get the ball in the air and close to those phenomenal receivers and they’ll catch it and make explosive plays. Going with another upset at Tiger Stadium on a Mississippi Saturday Night.

Ole Miss 31, LSU 28

Tonight

Miami @ Virginia Tech

6 PM ESPN

Like the Hokies to recover from a tough loss to Syracuse last week.

Va. Tech 34,  Miami 31

Troy @ South Alabama

6:30 PM CT/7:30 PM ET, Duh U, ESPNU

Troy has been playing well at 5-1, but Joey Jones has always been a clutch coach. Like the Jaguars at home.

South Alabama 34, Troy 30

BYU @ Boise State

9:15 PM CT/10:15 PM ET, ESPN

This is a super matchup. I love the way that BYU is not afraid to play anybody. The Big 12 is a joke for not letting BYU and Houston join their league. It’s a clown show in the Big 12. They handled that whole situation so clown-like. I do like Boise to barely edge out a gritty, tough Cougar team on the annoying blue turf. Should be a good game.

Boise State 38, BYU 35

Friday

Oregon @ California

9:30 PM CT/10:30 PM ET, ESPN

Going with the Golden Bears to outscore the Ducks, who are pretty terrible on defense and not getting the job done under Mark Helfrich. Sonny Dykes is doing an excellent job in Berkeley.

Cal 45, Oregon 41

Saturday

Mississippi State @Kentucky

6:30 PM CT/7:30 PM ET, SEC Network

State is better than their record. They have talent, they just haven’t gotten the stellar quarterback play that they had the last four years with Dak Prescott who is lighting it up with Dallas in the NFl. That’s quite a story in itself. But I like Dan Mullen and his Bulldogs to get it done in the Bluegrass state.

State 31, Kentucky 28

Massachusetts @ South Carolina

11 AM CT/Noon ET, SEC Network

Like the Gamecocks to break out some on Saturday at Williams-Brice Stadium. Will Muschamp’s  a good hire, and it’s going to show in the coming years. They’ve been competitive. He just needs more playmakers on offense and to really recruit well overall. I expect him to do that going forward.

SC 42, UMass 14

Middle Tennessee @ Missouri

3 PM CT/4 PM ET, SEC Network

Like the Tigers to get on the winning side of the ledger this week.

Missouri 42, MTSU 28

No.2 Ohio State @ Penn State

7 PM CT/8 PM ET, ABC

It’s going to be windy  @ 15-25 MPH and some rain, though it may stop at game time. This game should be more of a grind it out type of contest. Going with Urb and the Buckeyes to get the job done in Happy Valley, but it’ll be tougher than expected..

The Ohio State 28, Penn State 24

Oregon State @ No.5 Washington

5:30 PM CT/6:30 PM ET, PAC 12 Network

Bullish on this Huskies team. They’re looking like a possible playoff team. I’m going with Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State and Louisville at this point, but Washington and Michigan are knocking on the door, though I have something to say about Jim and Michigan coming up.

Washington 45, Oregon State 24

Illinois @ No. 3 Michigan

2:30 PM CT/3:30 PM ET, Big Ten Network

When is Jim going to play anybody good? He played a pretty good Wisconsin team and a pretty decent Colorado team but both games were played before 107,000 fans at the Big House. He’s had a cupcake schedule.  Michigan is good, but I’m not calling them great. Jim still has proving to do. The schedule is so easy, that it might not be till @ Ohio State before he’s tested. No wonder he’s out in California announcing the high school homecoming queen and holding the chains for a a prep game during an off week, because he sure doesn’t have to worry much about Illinois and the rest of his cream puff schedule. Well done again, Jim.

Michigan 63, Illinois 7

NC State @ No.7 Louisville

11 AM CT/Noon ET, ABC

The Wolfpack played Clemson down to the wire and were a missed 30 yard field goal at the end of regulation from beating them. Clemson has really lived dangerously this season. I like Lamar Jackson and his Cardinals team to keep it going at home though. The Cardinals only loss is to Clemson on the road and they gave the Tigers everything they wanted in Death Valley. Louisville is a buy for me.

Louisville 48, NC State 24

TCU @  No. 12 West Virginia

2:30 PM CT/3:30 PM ET, ABC

Usually not a big buyer in Dana Holgerson at West Virginia, but this team seems different. TCU is down this season, so I’ll take the Mountaineers at home. They’re not elite, but they’re pretty good and have a chance to win the Big 12.

West Va. 31, TCU 28

No. 10 Wisconsin @ Iowa

11 AM CT/Noon ET, ESPN

Like the Badgers to bounce back against the Hawkeyes.

Whisky 24, Iowa 21

Purdue @ No.8 Nebraska

2:30 PM CT/3:30 PM ET, ABC

Not buying Nebraska as an elite team at all, but they’ll get by Purdue with relative ease.

Nebraska 35, Purdue 24

No. 22 North Carolina @ Virginia

2 PM CT/3 PM ET, ACC Network, Watch ESPN

I’m kind of liking  the Tar Heels. Still hesitant to really be bullish on them because Gene Chizik is their defensive coordinator. But they went to Miami last week and won, and they’ve been pretty impressive this year. Virginia is in a total rebuild mode right now.

UNC 34, UVA 30

Indiana @ Northwestern

11 AM/Noon ET, Big Ten Network

Still like the schools that still believe in the concept of “student” athlete and not just “NFL” athlete. Northwestern is also very competitive.

Northwestern 30, Indiana 28

Colorado @ Stanford

2 PM CT/3 PM ET, PAC-12 Network

Like this Buffaloes team. Stanford is not the Stanford we’ve seen the last several years.

Colorado 31, Stanford 28

Texas @ Kansas State

11 AM CT/Noon ET, ESPN 2

I still believe in Charlie Strong. Texas needs to give him another year so he can have all his recruits in place and have his culture firmly instilled in the program. Mack Brown left him a mess that it’s taken a while to clean up. He has had to get rid of smoothie bars at the practice field and buses from the locker room to the practice field. It’s been a challenge, but I still am a buyer in Strong.

Texas 38, Kansas State 34

No. 16 Oklahoma @ Texas Tech

7 PM CT/8 PM ET, FOX

OU seems to be getting it together. They should. Stoops has a lot of talent. He should be able to do something with it.

OU 48, Texas Tech 42

No. 19 Utah @ UCLA

3 PM CT/4 PM ET, FOX

Like the Bruins to get the job done at the Rose Bowl.

UCLA 31, Utah 28

Washington State @ Arizona State

9 PM CT/10 PM ET, PAC-12 Network

Really believe in Mike Leach and what he’s doing in Pullman. His team finished 9-4 last year, they play better defense this year, and I trust Leach and his team. Looks like a shootout in the desert though.

Wash State 48, Zona State 45

No. 11 Houston @ SMU

6 PM CT/7 PM ET, ESPN 2

Like the Cougars to get the job done but their stock and Tom Herman’s stock have both dropped somewhat.

Houston 45, SMU 28

Memphis @ No. 24 Navy

2:30 PM CT/3:30 PM ET CBS Sports Network

If the Academy can knock off Houston at home they can do the same with Memphis. Like the slight upset here.

Midshipman 28, Memphis 24

Eastern Michigan @ No. 20 Western Michigan

Western Michigan is becoming quite a story in college football. P. J. Fleck is doing some super things in Kalamazoo.

Western Mich 38, Eastern Michigan 28

Key Holes

No.2: 444 yards, Par 4

The course description calls this a “thinkers” tee shot in which the players have to hit their tee shots to the left or right depending on the pin location to get the best angle to the hole for a birdie opportunity. For the longer hitters, a 3 wood would be the best choice as driver might find the lake. If the hole location is back left, a tee shot to the right side of the fairway is the most advantageous shot, and for a back right or central hole location, a tee shot to the left side of the fairway is advisable. A precision mid or short iron is necessary to this huge, undulating green protected by four large bunkers and the lake to the left.

No.10, 559 yards, par 5

An aggressive drive requires precision with a lake to the right and bunkers on the left. A missed tee shot to the left can leave the player with a tough second shot with the ball being well below your feet causing a player to hit it to the right and in trouble. There will be trees to negotiate on the left hand side. The cross bunkers just short of the green to the right demand a long explosion shot and need to be avoided. The approach to the green takes a lot of thinking as the player is hitting to a narrow, well bunkered green. Pretty challenging par 5.

No.15, 199 yards, par 3

A picturesque hole that is strategically difficult. Hole locations are tricky and the player needs to make sure he doesn’t hit the short side of the green to the front and right as there is a lake in front, bunkers to the right, and not too much green to work with if you are in the traps or on the right side. The green is quite undulating, many mounds on it, and can leave some challenging long putts. A par is solid here, a birdie is a bonus.

No. 16, 318 yards, par 4

This is an exciting hole as the player must decide whether to go for it or not. The recommended “smart” play is to hit the tee shot to the first bunker on the right and leave a wedge shot to the narrow, undulating green. There is a lake in front and running down the entire right side of the hole. Hole locations can be tricky. The players must beware of the hidden green side bunker short right.

No. 17, 336 yards, par 4

Called one of the most beautiful holes in the world of golf, the fairway is split by a stream running right through the middle of it. The hole location determines whether the player should hit it to the  right or left fairway. A back right pin placement means the player should hit it to the left fairway to go for the birdie. However, a long, accurate drive is necessary to carry the stream and miss the left bunkers. The conservative way to play the hole is to play it with a long iron or fairway wood up the right fairway then hit a wedge approach to the bunkered, undulating green. The backdrop is phenomenal with a waterfall behind it. Players may not be able to afford to play it conservatively if they are trying to catch the leader, so this hole will lead to some fireworks on Sunday.

No. 18, 634 yards, par 5

A long and accurate drive is required for the players who are attacking this hole and playing to get a possible eagle for the longer hitters, or a birdie for the not as long hitters. If the green is not reachable, extreme caution must be taken in laying up as there are four strategically positioned bunkers that are waiting for the errant or poorly calculated layup or attack shot. The undulating green is well protected by bunkers and demands precision with the approach. Should provide for major drama come Sunday.

Contenders

Tony Finau

Finished 9th here last year shooting -18. Man those guys went ballistically low here last year. Super putter when he’s on and long. The 27 year old from Salt Lake City won the Puerto Rico Open last March and is due for a breakout victory.

Justin Thomas

He was my pick last week at the Safeway Open and finished tied 8th shooting 75, 66, 66,67. If it wasn’t for a tough first day and some short missed birdie putts and a short missed par putt on Sunday, the 23 year old, who finished -14, four shots back of winner Brendan Steele, might have won in Napa. He’s the defending champion, so he’ll be in the mix on Sunday.

Ryan Moore

Like Ryan to keep his momentum going from the Ryder Cup where he won his singles match over Lee Westwood and in the week before at the Tour Championship, where he lost to Rory by one stroke in a four hole playoff. The 33 year old from Tacoma, Washington is a heckuva clutch player. He’s won 5 times on tour, and, in 2004, as an amateur and playing for the UNLV team, he won the NCAA title, the U.S. Public Links, the Western Amateur, and the U.S. Amateur. to go along with those credentials, he’s gone back to back here in 2013 and 2014.

Hideki Matsuyama

I like the fact that Hideki is playing on semi home turf as the 24 year old from Ehime, Japan is familiar with these courses in eastern Asia. Hideki has all the tools to win big on the tour and win majors. He’s a stud. He’s long and accurate, so it’s just a matter of if his putter is on that’ll determine if he’ll win this week.

Patrick Reed

The superstar from the Ryder Cup who finished 3-1-1 there and is 6-1-2 in two Ryder Cups, is iron. He outlasted Rory in a classic at the Ryder Cup outplaying the guy who many consider still the best player in the world. Patrick also won the Barclays in late August, the first leg of the Fed Ex Cup playoffs. It is now called The Northern Trust and will be played at Glen Oaks Club in Westbury, New York Aug. 24-27, and still be the first leg of the playoffs. The Northern Trust Open at Riviera Country Club in southern California will now be called the Genesis Open. That is played in February. Back to Patrick; total stud, really matured a lot and there is greatness written all over this 26 year old from San Antonio, Texas via the University of Georgia and Augusta State University.

Winner

This is a tough choice because there are some serious studs in this field. But I’m going to go with the hot hand right now, although all these guys are cranking pretty well right now. I’ll take the two time winner at Kuala Lumpur and winner of the John Deere Classic this past July. He took Rory to the brink at the Tour Championship with some hugely clutch play and was super clutch in the singles matches Sunday at Hazeltine National for the U.S. team.

Ryan Moore

Like Ryan to keep the momentum going against a really stout field

Like Ryan to keep the momentum going against a really stout field
