Huge game tonight in Oracle Arena for a spot in the NBA Finals, Spieth goes off, the superb Clayton Kershaw, CWS predictions, Stanley Cup prediction

Splash brothers in a colossal showdown with KD, Russell and the Thunder with the season on the brink

Splash brothers in a colossal showdown with KD, Russell and the Thunder with the season on the brink

Oklahoma City looked in really good shape heading into Saturday Night’s game six in OKC with a 3-2 lead in the Western Conference finals series with Golden State. Russell Westbrook, Kevin Durant and the Thunder looked like they were heading to Cleveland this Thursday Night for game one of the Finals to face LeBron, Kevin Love, Kyrie Irving and the Cavs, who pretty much wasted the Toronto Raptors at the end of their Eastern Conference finals. But something happened along the way in game six that changed the entire Cleveland-OKC matchup. That something was the not as heralded Splash Brother for the Dubs, Klay Thompson. Thompson was draining threes from the state capital building in downtown OKC, finishing with a playoffs’ record 11 trifectas and 41 points to lead him, Steph Curry and the Warriors to an almost improbable comeback victory over the Thunder, 108-101, and a game seven matchup with the Thunder at Oracle Arena in Oakland tonight. Klay was spectacular to say the least, and Steph was pretty special in the fourth quarter as well, finishing with 31 points.

Tonight at 9 PM ET/8 PM CT/ 6 PM PT on TNT, the Warriors, a 6.5 point favorite as the line has dropped from 7 just recently,  will square off with a still highly focused Thunder team. Billy Donovan is not going to let his team dwell on Saturday Night. He’ll have his team ready and they will give the Warriors everything they want. Some interesting stats: the home team in game 7’s are 100-24, the road team is 12-24. OKC is 6-3 in game sevens in their history, but 0-2 on the road.

I picked the Warriors over the Spurs in 7 in the Western Conference finals before the playoffs started and for the Warriors to hoist the Lawrence O’Brien Trophy for the second year in a row beating the Cavs in 5. Not positive they’ll get it done that quickly over the Cavs, but I’m looking for a tremendous game tonight with Steph, Klay, and company just getting it done at home and hosting the Cavs in games one and two of the finals at Oracle beginning Thursday Night.

Warriors 105, Thunder 103

The man is back

The man is back

Jordan Spieth goes ballistic at Colonial

Jordan Spieth is most definitely back. He put on a clinic yesterday at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth at the Dean and Deluca Invitational, shooting a final round 66 and birdieing six holes on the back 9 including three in a row on 10, 11 and 12, and, in dramatic fashion, 16, 17 and 18. Jordan was locked in with his putter. It was the Jordan Spieth form of 2015. He became the second player to win eight tournaments at the age of 22, breaking a tie with Tiger who won seven. Horton Smith won 14 times at age 22 . Can’t say I remember Ol’ Horton. Way before my time, and I don’t believe he faced the competition that Jordan has been facing the last four years.

Jordan birdied 16 with a 20 foot curling left to right putt that dropped in from the left side of the cup. Number 17 was as dramatic a hole for him as he can remember. It was dramatic for any golf fan. Jordan’s  drive on the par 4 was left, but hit a marshall in the lower leg and caromed into the first cut of the rough in fine shape. Jordan, in his typical classy fashion, gave the marshall a signed glove. His second shot, a seven iron, air mailed the green, but hit the temporary grandstand and kicked back into the rough behind the green. His chip from 15 yards away landed on the green and rolled into the cup for an amazing birdie. The crowd roared for their hometown hero, who was born and raised in Dallas. For good measure, Jordan birdied 18 from 30 feet to finish -17 and win by three shots over Harris English. Jordan heard some noise from the crowd about blowing it at the Masters and he used that as motivation. With the victory, Jordan heads into the Memorial, Jack’s tournament, with tons of momentum. He’ll square off with world number one Jason Day, number three Rory, who is fresh off a huge victory at the Irish Open last week, Rickie, Dustin, Phil, Adam Scott, Bubba, all the studs. Should be an epic at Jack’s place this week. Muirfield Village Golf Clubin Dublin, Ohio will host the world’s best. Will have preview-prediction on Wednesday.

Of course, an even bigger prize for Jordan, Jason, an already three time winner on tour this season including a Players Championship victory, Rory, and this stellar group of players awaits in two and a half weeks, June 16th-19th, at Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, PA, just outside of Pittsburgh, as the 116th United States Open commences. Jordan aims to defend his title after winning the 115th Open at Chambers Bay in Washington state last year. It was a controversial venue with a funky course and putt putt greens, but Jordan got the job done for his second major that year outlasting Dustin Johnson, who had a 14 foot putt for eagle on 18 to win it, but three putted to fall to Jordan. This should be a phenomenal Open at one of the most famous courses in the world. Fox and Fox Sports 1 will televise.

The NCAA Golf Championships in progress right now. Fifteen teams playing today in the fourth day of stroke play with the top eight teams advancing to the quarterfinals in match play tomorrow. The quarters and semis are tomorrow and the finals are Wednesday. Golf Channel will televise. Tomorrow’s quarters are at 1:30 PM ET/12:30 PM CT and the semis are at 6 PM ET/5 PM CT tomorrow night with the championship match Wednesday at 6 PM ET/5 PM CT. Texas is leading at +6  Southern Cal is second at +7 and Vanderbilt is third at +8.

Update: Texas and USC lead at +9 and VU is third at +11. All three teams are playing holes 7-9. Oregon is fourth at +13 and Illinois and LSU are tied for fifth at +17.

Alabama, Auburn and UAB made the NCAA Championships at Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Oregon, but didn’t make the top 15. Former Alabama chief assistant coach Scott Limbaugh has his Vanderbilt Commodores team playing phenomenal golf. Limbaugh has done a stellar job at Vanderbilt. A lot of golf left today.. Former Spain Park High School player Patrick Martin, a freshman at VU and a sensational one at that, is playing No.2 for Vanderbilt. LSU is fifth at +15. It’s pretty windy in Eugene, so the teams and players are really grinding this one out. Aaron Wise of Oregon leads the individual competition at -8. through 9. Matthias Schwab of Vanderbilt and Bo Hossler of Texas are second at -4 through five holes. The individual champion will be crowned today and it can be seen on the Golf Channel.

Alabama baseball coach Mitch Gaspard has resigned. Mitch is a nice guy, but just couldn’t get the Tide over the hump in baseball. It was time. A new coach could really invigorate the program. There is no reason Alabama can’t be a national contender. The Tide has done it before, and, with a good coach, can do it again.

Clayton Kershaw is electric

Dodgers ace, and I’d say the best pitcher in baseball, Clayton Kershaw, recorded 10 strikeouts against no walks in the Dodgers 4-2 victory over the Mets last night. The significance of that is Kershaw now has 105 strikeouts against five walks this season, an incredible 21:5 strikeout to walk ratio. He’s on pace to strike out 300 for the second year in row. With the arms in the major leagues now in Jake Arrieta of the Cubs, Chris Sale of the White Sox, Max Scherzer and Stephen Strasburg of the Nationals, David Price of the BoSox and Madison Bumgarner of the Giants, the game has never been better. And teams are hitting. The Toronto Blue Jays, Boston Red Sox, Baltimore Orioles are all crushing it, and the teams in teams in the NL led by the awesome Cubs and the Pirates are also crushing it. The Cubs, at 34-14, look like the class of the NL right now, and can crush the ball, but the Giants, Mets, Dodgers, Nationals and Pirates are going to have a lot to say about the NL pennant. The Mariners, BoSox, KC Royals and Baltimore Orioles look tough in the AL. Plenty to be determined in what is shaping up to be a spectacular season. Not only is their great pitching, but superstars Mike Trout of the Angels, Bryce Harper of the Nationals and entire Cubs starters it seems like are superb baseball players. Epic season in 2016. Picked the Astros over the Dbacks in the World Series and both teams are struggling a little right now, but both have super talent, so of course I’m sticking with that prediction.

College World Series

My prediction for the teams that’ll reach the College World Series at Rosenblatt Stadium  in Omaha in late June are Texas A&M, Florida, Mississippi State, Ole Miss LSU, 2014 champion Vanderbilt, defending champion Virginia, and the awesome Louisville Cardinals. The road begins Friday. Florida is the number one overall seed. There are four SEC teams that are top eight national seeds, as along with Florida, Texas A&M, the SEC champion, Mississippi State and LSU were chosen as top eight national seeds. Vanderbilt, Ole Miss and South Carolina are in the field and are regional hosts.

Stanley Cup finals prediction

The Stanley Cup commences tonight at 8 PM ET/7PM CT on NBC as the Pittsburgh Penguins host the San Jose Sharks. Both are very impressive.  San Jose is extremely physical, and Pittsburgh faster and a little more skilled. I’m going with the awesome 28 year old center Sidney Crosby, who has 133 point in 118 career playoff games, and the Pens to get the job done in an epic series. Crosby wins the Conn Smythe Trophy as the Stanley Cup playoffs MVP. This will be the Pens fourth Stanley Cup championship with their last coming in 2009. They also won it in ’91 and ’92.  The passionate Pittsburgh sports fans get another title.

Super game for our young, yet now veteran phenomenal team, final thoughts on women’s tennis, new women’s bball coach and an important personal request

A terrific all around performance by our super team. Won 7-0 over Missouri and defeated a very good pitcher in Tanner Houck. Center fielder Bryan Reynolds with a couple of doubles today, including a two run double in the bottom of the sixth after consecutive singles by Ethan Paul and Jeren Kendall. Julian Infante with a two run shot, his fifth of the year. Freshman Patrick Raby pitched terrifically going six and giving up nothing with two walks and four K’s. That’s really a big deal how well Patrick pitched because Corbs can either use him out of the bullpen or start him this postseason. Collin Snider pitched two excellent innings in the seventh and eighth, and freshman Donny Everett pitched an awesome ninth throwing it 97 at times. Donny has electric stuff. We’re going to love Donny and all our other superstar players next season.

But it’s this season and it’s tomorrow, which are of the ultimate importance right now. Couple of other things on today’s game: Alonzo Jones was spectacular at second base making one amazing play on a ground ball that was headed towards right field and looking like a sure fire single in a critical juncture of the game when it was scoreless around the top of the fourth or fifth. Alonzo sprinted to his left with that 4.3-4.4 speed, amazingly gloved the ball that would have been out of a lot of MLB second basemen’s reach. did a 360, and threw it to Ethan Paul right on target for an out on a fast Missouri runner. It was unbelievable. Then Alonzo made another super play by catching a fly ball in short right, an over the left shoulder phenomenal catch, that our stud second baseman almost made look easy. We’re going to really like Alonzo the rest of this season, which will hopefully go into deep June, and in the next two to three years. We’ve got stellar freshmen. With Alonzo, shortstop Connor Kaiser, Ethan, who’s playing first now and has a tremendous bat and wheels, just a terrific baseball player, Julian who’s a superb hitter and will be a critical player for us among many of our other guys in the postseason, Liam Sabino, an exceptional hitter, pitchers Patrick, Donny and three or four others, along with our stud vets in Bryan, Jeren, Will Toffey, who had two hits today and will be critical for us this month and next along with Bryan and Jeren, Ro, who hit it great today but had nothing to show for it, but I have a feeling those line drives will start falling, pitchers Ben Bowden, one of our heart and soul guys of this baseball team, Sheff, Kyle Wright, John Kilichowski,  Collin Snider, Matt Ruppenthal, and, of course, stud catcher Jason Delay and his awesome backup, Karl Ellison, along with some other key young arms, I’m ecstatic about the prospects starting tomorrow @ 9:30 AM CT/10:30 AM ET vs A&M on the SEC Network.

A&M tomorrow and lefty John Kilichowski gets the start for us. John got his first start against Auburn last Thursday Night and pitched six solid innings with just one mistake that led to a three run homer. But he got the win, pitched very well,  and I trust John completely to get the job done. John’s a very good pitcher and he’s clutch. Our lineup will face A&M right hander Andrew Vinson, who is 3-2 with a 2.83 ERA with seven walks and 39 K’s. He pitched against us in relief in the first game of our series at A&M two weeks ago and got the victory. So we’ll be tested. But I have full confidence we’ll be ready.

Saw an interview by SEC Network reporter Laura Rutledge with Carson and Dans, who were at the game, pulling for their former teammates and our young studs. They were awesome as usual. They both said pro baseball is a serious grind, day to day, and it’s different from college. But knowing Dans and Carson, they have embraced it. Carson is going to pitch for the B’ham Barons at home June 2nd, a Thursday, and I will be there to talk to him afterwards. Dans is coming into Birmingham with the Mississippi Braves in mid June and I will be talking to Dans then. Will have both studs’ comments on the blog the day after my conversations with them. Really looking forward to that. They’re the best. Two of the many Tim Corbin’ greats.

David on the hill. Will have that recap tomorrow AM.

One final thing on our baseball team with a lot more to come in the coming days; this is a really, really high bar, but in my opinion, Corbs may have done his best job of player development this season. He’s been sensational as our coach as everyone at Vanderbilt and college baseball knows, but something about this season and how this pretty young team has developed to where we are now a force that can win this tournament and go very deep in June, is really phenomenal.  Corbs has been phenomenal for a long time. He’s something else. His coaching has always been superb, but it’s been as good as ever this season. Corbs deserves consideration for national coach of the year if you really study the game. To develop this young, tremendous group of players the way he has developed them this season, is a testament to what a phenomenal player developer Coach, Corbs is is. He’s the best in college baseball, hands down.

Women’s tennis

Couldn’t be more proud of Geoff McDonald and his awesome team. The girls battled their hearts out yesterday. We hardly ever lose, we don’t like it, and aren’t used to it. I really kind of had a problem with Fernanda Contreras’s match. We were down 3-2 in the team match to Stanford, and Fernanda and Frances Altick had split sets and were both in their respective third sets. Fernanda got down 1-5, but was giving her typical max effort. The Stanford girl made a couple of out calls on balls that looked good and were critical points in Fernanda’s attempt to come back. Fernanda was upset but handled it with class. The the umpire upheld the girl’s calls, which I was really surprised by. I didn’t agree with either call. They were really big points. Fernanda and Frances really battled. I hate to see our girls lose on a couple of bad calls.

But it was another exceptional season for Geoff, Sydney Campbell, Frances, Astra Sharma, who is super clutch and will be back I’m pretty sure along with the first two, if they don’t go to the next level, senior Courtney Colton, who was supremely clutch throughout her career and particularly in this postseason, Georgina Sellyn, and all our other girls. We had a tremendous team, we just came up a little short this year. But I stay excited about what Geoff does and will do in the future. Geoff and the girls were remarkable this season. So proud of them. We’ll be back, I promise you that. Proud of what we accomplished this year. There are many teams wishing they could win  the national championship in 2015 and go to the Final Four in 2016. The girls were superb.

Women’s basketball hires new coach

Athletics Director David Williams has hired a new women’s basketball coach and she is Stephanie White, who comes to us from the WNBA’s Indiana Fever, which she led to the WNBA finals two years ago in her first season. This is a super hire by our athletic director. As a player, Stephanie was national player of the year in 1999 after leading her Purdue Boilermakers team to the national championship. She averaged 20.2 ppg her senior year and was an Academic All American. She played five successful years in the WNBA and was named to the Indiana Fever All-Decade team in the first decade of this century. Stephanie replaces Melanie Balcomb, who resigned last month after 14 pretty successful years at VU. Melanie brought in a top 10 class for next season, and their is good talent coming back, so we could be right in the tournament again next year. Really excited about the Stephanie White hire. She’s going to be outstanding. She was a terrific three point shooter in her career and has good experience as a college assistant. Pumped about the future for the women’s bball team. Dr. Williams hit another home run again with this hire.

By the way, in the men’s basketball SEC/Big 12 Challenge next January, 2017,, we’ll play Iowa State at home, which should be a stellar game. The game will be on January 28th in conjunction with other SEC-Big 12 games, and will be televised by the ESPN networks. Excited to see what Bryce can do with the top of the line talent we have returning and our two incoming freshmen. There may be another player in the mix before June is over with. Would be nice to grab another point guard, either a transfer or a freshman. But we’ll be fine with Riley and freshman Payton Willis if we don’t get one for next season.

NBA tonight

Fes and Steph in action tonight as the Warriors are down 1-2 in their series with OKC. They are at OKC. Game time is 8 PM CT/9PM ET on TNT. Huge game for Fes, Steph and the team. Fes playing well. Hope Steve Kerr uses him a lot tonight. Really need this one. Don’t need to go down 1-3.

Also, my Tampa Bay Lightning are playing the Pittsburgh Penguins right now on NBC Sports Network in the sixth game of the Eastern Conference Championship in the NHL Stanley Cup semifinals. They are tied 0-0 n the first period. The reason I like the Lightning so much is that they remind me so much of Vanderbilt athletes. They are total heart guys. They are missing their starting goalie, Ben Bishop, who is superb and out with an injury, though he may play tonight, their best offensive player and one of their best defensive players, both of whom may be back soon, and they’re still getting it done. They’re up 3-2 in the series and can close it out tonight and make their second consecutive Stanley Cup Finals appearance with a victory at home. If they win tonight, they’ll play the winner of two outstanding Western Conference teams, the San Jose Sharks and the St. Louis Blues. San Jose won last night at St. Louis, 6-3, in a super clutch performance, that put them up 3-2 in the series with game 6 at San Jose tomorrow night. It’s pretty epic stuff in the NHL right now too.

Finally and most importantly for our family

If you would please keep my wife and my nephew, Drew Williams, in your prayers. Drew, 14, was bitten by a copperhead today while he was in his barn by his house in Enterprise, AL. helping his dad move some wood around. There’s a lot of things I admire about Drew. First of all, he’s the finest young man I’ve ever met in my life. For example, for Mother’s Day Drew first went over to his grandfather’s house and hooked up a television to cable, got the channels in order, and set his Papa up with a new TV. Then, for his mom Marty, he took two shovels and a couple of picks and built an entire garden for Marty with trees, flowers and bushes. He worked on this late Sunday afternoon after everything else he did that day. That’s just one of the many examples of what Drew does for people. He’s got a tremendous heart. Drew was bitten in his foot at about 12:30 PM CT today, and was in major pain. Drew is tougher than nails and the doctor or nurse asked him from 1-10 what kind of pain he was in, and he said “8.” To other people that’s an 11. He is resting now and doing a lot better and we’re getting out of the woods, but your prayers would be greatly appreciated.

In addition to what a great young man Drew is, he’s a tremendous student, and a tremendous baseball and football player. Baseball’s his first passion and he’s an exceptional catcher, pitcher and hitter. Drew, and his younger brother Jack, 12, are superbly clutch baseball players. Jack plays shortstop and pitches and can really hit as well. They are both outstanding football players, too, as they both had pick sixes in their football practices a couple of weeks ago. Really talented athletes and superb young boys. But baseball is Drew’s and Jack’s first love. I would love to see Drew and Jack both playing for Tim Corbin at Vanderbilt. They fit the Vanderbilt baseball profile with a capital V and a three exclamation points. They are exceptional young men. Drew is in intensive care right now, but resting comfortably and is ready to get out and start being active again. That’s typical Drew. Ready to get back to activity and being the positive, productive person that he is.  But he has to stay in the hospital for 24 hours to be all clear. He is getting Anti-Venom IV’s every six hours. Please keep this awesome young man in your prayers, along with his parents, Marty and Brent, who are exceptional people also, and his younger brother Jack.

What makes this more important, if it’s not important enough already, is that our family lost our beloved mother, wife, mother in law grandmother and friend, Mary, to cancer a month ago. So this just made that come back a little bit. Please keep Drew, Marty, Brent and Jack in your prayers.  My wife and I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks a lot.

Will get back in the AM with Price, Fes roundup, and be ready for our huge game with A&M.

The Men’s golf team*** plays in the NCAA Championships at Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Oregon starting this Friday. Coach Scott Limbaugh and the team have been tremendous this season, and I’m very excited to see the guys compete and go for the national title this weekend and early next week. Will keep you posted on the guys’ progress.

VU Confidential

Baseball team has stellar weekend, head to SEC Tourney with major momentum

We swept Auburn with a 4-3 clutch victory on Saturday at the Hawk before 3,626 fans on a beautiful, sunny Saturday afternoon. It was a terrific close out game to the regular season.

We got some more super contributions from our freshmen. Frosh second baseman Alonzo Jones and fellow classmate Liam Sabino, who was our designated hitter, both had key singles in the bottom of the fourth to key a three run scoring frame. Junior center fielder Bryan Reynolds also had two hits and started the fourth inning rally with a two out single. Kyle Wright got the W to move to 8-3 on the season. Kyle went six, gave up five hits, with two earned, three walks and nine K’s. Kyle’s been extraordinarily good this season. With Kyle and Jordan at the top of our rotation, we have two super arms carrying us, and we look like we might be solidifying that third starter with John Kilichowski having a good outing last Thursday Night in the second game of our doubleheader sweep of the War Eagles. And we now look like we have some depth in the starting rotation with freshmen Patrick Raby, Matt McGary and Donny Everett showing signs that they can give us good outings when we need them to. Collin Snider came in for the seventh and for one out in the eighth, and battled like Collin always does, but ran into some trouble in the eighth. Ben Bowden came in and gave up a run to Auburn on a base hit, as the Tigers cut the lead to 4-3, but Ben got out of it thanks to a clutch defensive play by sophomore third baseman Will Toffey. The Auburn hitter hit a high chopper to deep third. Will leapt, secured the ball, and dove for the bag and tagged it before the runner made it to the base. It was a huge play by Will. Will has not had his best year at the plate, but his defense has been superb, and he’s starting to hit like he was hitting last year. Will is a terrific player. I just have a feeling he’s going to get that bat going in the postseason which would be a huge boost to our lineup because Will does have a great bat. Ben got all three hitters out in the ninth to record his 10th save. Ben is definitely one of our leaders. Such a heart guy and Ben has an electric arm. Like Ben as our clutch closer like Adam Ravanelle was two years ago. Middle relief is coming along and I think we’ll be fine there as Corbs can mix and match with some arms. Relief pitching will be critical down the stretch. All our pitching will be.

We finished the season 41-16 overall and 18-12 in the SEC. It was a very solid finish for a team that just keeps growing. Shortstop Connor Kaiser, who has been outstanding in the field for us and has given us a huge lift at short, also had a key single in the bottom of the fourth to back up Alonzo and Liam. Connor has had a tremendous season in his freshman campaign. We have a stellar freshmen class. Alonzo played second and had a few struggles, but made some nice plays too. Starting second baseman, senior Tyler Campbell, has been banged up a little, so Zo started in his place. Tyler came in for the ninth. Would like to have Tyler available for the postseason, and have Alonzo definitely contributing with the bat and playing some second as well when needed. Love the Jones-Sabino bats in the lineup. Jeren didn’t have his best day at the plate Saturday, but he’s still playing very well and had a really good Thursday Night at the plate. Jeren plays superior right field. Just need to get left field settled. Jason Delay did a tremendous job behind the plate. Jason is stellar and can hit some. Karl Ellison backs him up well.

So we finished as the sixth seed in the conference heading into the SEC Tournament at the Hoover Met in B’ham, AL., and will play Missouri in the first game at 9:30 AM CT/10:30 AM ET tomorrow, Tuesday, on the SEC Network. I’m pretty sure Sheff will start for us, and the Tigers will start their ace, Tanner Houck, who is 5-5 with a 2.99 ERA. He throws it mid to high 90’s and has 100 K’s on the season against 26 walks. He throws it hard and is accurate. He’s another stellar Friday Night guy in the SEC, so it will be a massive challenge for our guys. We’ll have to get good work from Sheff and the defense, and we’ll have to get three or four runs across the plate. Looking forward to it.

I’m not even thinking past tomorrow. Tomorrow will be tough and we HAVE to win. I’ll go from there on the blog if we are victorious tomorrow. Not even going to talk about anything other than the game tomorrow. That’s the focus for this baseball team. I’ll have a complete wrap up tomorrow afternoon or early Wednesday morning. Missouri was 26-29 overall this season and 9-21 in the conference, but with this being a single elimination game and Houck throwing, we’ll have to be at our best.

Women’s Tennis advances to the Final Four

The girls did it again, this time beating Virginia, 4-2 in the Elite Eight, to advance to the Final Four today at noon CT/1 PM ET. Wow, it was awesome. Frances Altick closed out the match with a6-4, 6-2 victoryover Julie Elbaba of UVA. It was a hard fought match and Frances’s toughness and consistency with her ground strokes and her serve were the differences because Elbaba was pretty darn good and an athletic, powerful player. Sydney Campbell lost her match at No.1, but won the doubles at No.1 with Courtney Colton. They didn’t finish the match, but Sydney and Courtney were ahead. Frances and Astra Sharma won at No.2 doubles, and Fernanda Contreras and Georgina Sellyn won at No.3 to get the doubles point for us, then Fernanda and Astra won their matches, we lost a couple of singles matches, but the clutch play of Frances closed it out.

We now play Stanford, which won a hard fought match over Michigan Saturday. We did beat Stanford earlier this season, 4-1, but it’s a different time of year, and Stanford has four ranked players from No.25-100, so a major challenge for this girls. But I certainly believe in our group.

The match can be seen online at www.vucommodores . com and I will have a full report tonight. These are exciting times once again for Geoff and the tennis team. They are a spectacular group.

Will have more coming up later today and in the upcoming days.

Carson

Finally, I went to Regions Field here in Birmingham this past Saturday Night to watch Carson pitch for the Birmingham Barons, the Chicago White Sox double A team. I was going to interview Carson afterwards, but he had a tough outing, but a lot of it was not his fault. He gave up nine runs, but three of them were unearned and he really could have gotten out of the first inning if his shortstop wasn’t so bad. The shortstop made a critical error and the third base umpire called a line drive ball to left field fair when it looked like it was six inches foul. The shortstop really committed three errors behind Carson, but he was only charged with one. It was a tough night for the man, and I know how Carson is and knew he wouldn’t want to talk after that outing. He’s doing pretty well with the Barons, he just had a rough outing Saturday Night and got no help from his shortstop and a bad call by the third base ump, so it was an anomaly. Carson pitches again June 2nd at Regions Field and I’ll be there and will definitely talk to him hopefully after a stellar result. It was an awesome night at the ballpark. Sunny, 75 degrees, 8,500+ fans, a complete sellout.  It’s an awesome minor league baseball stadium. Probably about three years old now. Great move by Birmingham to move their team there. Looking forward to June 2nd for Carson. Dansby comes to Birmingham in mid June with the Mississippi Braves and will be there for a game and talk to Dans afterward and give you Dans’s thoughts on being in Mississippi then. Will have Carson on June 3rd if the rotation holds like it’s supposed to. Regardless, will have Carson story in early June when he pitches again at Regions Field.

Prediction for the 141st Preakness and the French Open, the second slam in tennis

Going with jockey Mario Gutierrez and Nyquist to win the second leg of the Triple Crown

Going with jockey Mario Gutierrez and Nyquist to win the second leg of the Triple Crown

Going with Nyquist again. Nyquist is 3-5 to win at Pimlico and I think he will though Exagerrator at 3-1, should give him a good run for his money like he did at the Derby in which he almost caught Nyquist at the finish line. Like Nyquist to capture the second leg of the Triple Crown and be primed to capture the second consecutive triple crown after Pharoah did it last year, which was the first time in 37 years after Affirmed did it in 1978. Seattle Slew had won it the year before in 1977, so kind of interesting if Nyquist pulls it off today. I like Nyquist to get it done on the 1 3/16 mile track just outside of Baltimore.

Post time is 6:45 PM ET/5:45 PM CT and will be televised by NBC.  Rain is expected at 6 PM, so  it’ll be a wet track. But Nyquist is a good wet track horse, so still like him. Trainer Doug O’Neill, jockey Mario Guitierrez, and owner Paul Roddam get it done again.

Winner: Nyquist

French Open

In the men’s singles finials at Roland Garros just outside of Paris, I like:

Novak Djokovic over Andy Murray in four sets.

Djoker will be tested by Rafa Nadal in the semis, and he’ll get out of there with a tough five set victory, then he’ll be challenged by Murray in the final, but he’ll prevail. Like Djoker to win his 12th Slam and first French. He has won six Australian Opens, three Wimbledons and two U.S. Opens. This would be a “Nova” slam because he won Wimbledon, the U.S. and the Australian in 2015 (Wimbledon, U.S.) and 2016 (Australian). Pretty spectacular stuff from the 28 Serbian year old, who will be 29 tomorrow. Novak could very well challenge the Federer all time record of 17 Grand Slam titles. Roger is out of the French with an injury. This is the first Slam Roger has missed in 17 years. But Rafa and Andy will give Novak a run for his money for sure.

In the women’s

Serena Williams

Serena over whomever she plays. She’s just too good for the rest of this field right now. They’re catching up, but Serena is playing well and is unstoppable right now. She’s still got it at 34 years old and is going for her 22nd Slam to tie Steffi Graf for second most Grand Slam history. Margaret Court has the most at 24. She’s second only to Graf in the Open era. Maybe Madison Keys will give Serena some problems or Simona Halep. They’re good players and up and coming, but Serena is too good right now. Now that Maria Sharapova is out due to performance enhancer use and Caroline Wozniacki is out with injury, it’s just hard to find a player that can beat Serena at this point.

Like Serena to capture her 22nd Slam and Djoker to capture his 12th at Roland Garros

Baseball takes a twinbill from Auburn, Price, Tony, Women’s tennis moves to Elite Eight, Men’s golf plays superbly, Derek-football, Bryce-bball

Alonzo Jones, above, and Liam Sabino, below are already excellent players for us and their futures are unlimeted

Alonzo Jones, above, and Liam Sabino, below are already excellent players for us and their futures are unlimeted

Vanderbilt baseball took a twinbill from Auburn on Thursday, 5-2 and 9-3. VU moved to 17-12 in the SEC and 40-15 overall. We play the third game of the three game set today at 2 PM CT/ 3 PM ET at the Hawk on SEC Network+. Jordan Sheffield got the victory to move to 8-4 overall and really fought  hard in pitching six solid innings, giving up two runs on four hits, with four walks and four K’s. Sheff didn’t have his best stuff, but powered through it. He gave us an outstanding effort. Freshman Patrick Raby came in for the seventh and gave us three solid innings of relief allowing no runs on two hits with one walk and three K’s. John Kilichowski pitched the nightcap and did well going five, giving up three runs on a three run homer, two walks and six K’s. Good effort from Patrick and John. That was John’s first start of the season as he had been battling some injuries earlier in the year, and Patrick got roughed up some at Florida. It was good to see them both pitch well because we’ll need them down the road in the SEC tourney and beyond. Matt Ruppenthal and Ben Bowden finished the game off for John. Kyle Wright, who has pitched superbly lately, gets the start today.

We got some excellent hitting from our leaders, Bryan Reynolds and Jeren Kendall, who both belted out homers in the second game, as Reynolds hit his 12th, and Jeren hit his ninth. Reynolds’ homer was a three run shot, and Jeren hit a clutch two run shot off a lefthander when the game was only 4-3 going into the bottom of the sixth. Both are super clutch players. Our freshmen are awesome. Ethan Paul had a couple of hits in the first game and stole home on a triple steal. It was beautiful. Our freshmen position players are so talented and can fly. The freshmen pitchers look like they’ll be stellar as well. Alonzo Jones had a couple of hits in the twinbill and played some nice second base in both games in place of Tyler Campbell. Alonzo played well, so we’ll see what Corbs does today at second. Tyler has been good though. Corbs may have been giving Tyler a break and giving Alonzo some playing time and experience because we’ll need him in the postseason. Alonzo is outstanding. And the amazing Liam Sabino had two hits and an RBI as DH. Liam’s going to be a spectacular hitter for us. He had three hits in his first start at DH against Morehead State on Tuesday in a victory. Connor Kaiser is giving us outstanding play at shortstop. He’s been phenomenal. Will Toffey’s bat looks like it’s coming alive. Would love to get that bat going, because when it is, Will can help carry this team offensively. Big RBI guy. He plays stellar third, too. Ro is solid in left and starting to play good left field. He needs to get his bat going some, but he’s certainly capable. We are currently tied with Ole Miss for sixth in the conference, meaning we are going to play on Tuesday at the Hoover Met in Birmingham. We would play Missouri if things ended today, but if we can beat Auburn we could move up to solo sixth. Looks like Missouri right now in the opener on Tuesday. But first things first. Need to beat Auburn today and go from there. Like the way the team has come together this week, the hitting is excellent, and the pitching is almost where Corbs and pitching coach Scott Brown want it to be. A good game today would really help. Would love to see Kyle go deep in the game and finish us off at 18-12 and 41-15 overall in the regular season.

David Price has been stellar lately for the BoSox. Dave moved to 7-1 on the season, with an 11-1 win over Houston at home a week and a half ago as David struck out 12 Astros, and then, this past Wednesday night, DP got the W for the Sox at Kansas City in a 5-2 Sox victory. David went 7.1 innings, giving up five hits, two runs with one walk and 5 K’s. He’s been throwing it 93, 94, 95 MPH with his fastball in his past two starts, as Dustin Pedroia, the Red Sox second baseman, who is an awesome player and awesome teammate, showed David a video of his pitching from last year and this year before the Astros game. David’s leg lift was too low and his glove in the wind up was too low. He started lifting the glove up to his shoulders and lifting his leg up to his waist and is now getting much more power on his fastball. His change up has been superb and his cutter’s always been awesome and he has really developed his curve ball. The fastball is still his go-to, but he really likes the change up now, too, and the other two pitches are excellent. He looks like the David Price we’ve been used to seeing, and the Red Sox were expecting when they signed him. It’s great to see David on a roll. Hopefully it’ll continue. He pitches Tuesday night at home against the Rockies next.

Tony Kemp was called up to the Astros Tuesday, and started Wednesday’s game in left field against the White Sox, and was two for four with a double and a single. The last place Astros need all the help they can get, and maybe Tony can provide a spark. He also had an assist throwing out Chicago White Sox right fielder Adam Eaton, who was trying to stretch a single to a double on Wednesday. It was a perfect one hop throw from left. Tony went hitless last night, but it’s terrific to see Tony get a shot and be doing so well. Maybe this will continue and the Astros will start playing better baseball. They lost their opening game of a three game set to the first place Rangers last night, 2-1, so they need to get these next two to get to 6 back in the AL West. They’ve got their work cut out for them, but there is a lot of talent on a young team that almost knocked off the world champion KC Royals in the playoffs last year. A lot of people were expecting the Astros to be in the World Series and some picked them to win it. I was one of them. I have the Astros over the Dbacks. Something about the Cubs and their 1908 jinx and Joe Maddon and some of his goofiness kept me from picking the Cubs, though they are really lighting it up right now.

Pedro is playing some third base for the Orioles and doing a good job. He had an RBI double Thursday Night, but didn’t play last night. Ryan Flaherty relieves Pedro late in games at third, and he’s done well. Shortstop J.J. Hardy broke a bone in his foot, so he’s out a while and third baseman Manny Machado has moved over to short giving Pedro and Ryan a lot of opportunities now. Both guys are key players on the first place Orioles, who lead the Bosox by one game in the AL East. The O’s are 25-15 and the Sox are 25-17. Will be a good race. Curt Casali still playing well for the Rays. He platoons at catcher with another player, and he’s having a good season. Curt needs to pick it up a little with the bat, but he’s had good hitting games and plays extremely good defense behind the plate.

Sonny having a tough time of it right now. The Yankees hit him hard last night and he’s been getting hit hard lately. I feel bad for him. But knowing how hard Sonny works, he will get this figured out. The A’s have 11 players on the DL, which is more than anybody in baseball, so they’re really going deep into their bench and calling up players from the minors, but they’re still competitive. Sonny will get it together soon.

Women’s tennis advances to Elite Eight

Geoff McDonald and his awesome defending national champion women’s tennis team defeated Auburn on Thursday, 4-0, in the Sweet 16 at Tulsa, OK, to move to the Elite Eight and face Virginia today. The Wahoos beat No.3 North Carolina on Thursday. Sydney Campbell and Courtney Colton got a win in doubles as did Frances Altick and Astra Sharma, and Fernanda Contreras and Georgina Sellyn. In singles Georgina, Fernanda, and Courtney got W’s and the super clutch Astra clinched the victory with her win at No.3. Sydney and Frances were in tough matches with very good Auburn players, but did not finish their third sets as our three through six players really helped get the job done. Virginia is very good. We beat them earlier this season, but they were missing some key players and we had some players out, so it was not a good representation of how today’s match will go. We’ll have to really be the best we can be to win today. Trust Geoff and the girls completely though. They are prime time performers. Major challenge today. The match starts at noon CT/ 1 PM ET today in Tulsa and will be shown on the vucommodores website. www.vucommodores,com. Huge if we can get this one today and make it to our second consecutive Final Four.

Men’s golf with a superb performance at Regional at Legend’s Club in Franklin, TN.

The men’s golf team moves on to the NCAA Championships now as part of a 30 team field in Eugene, Oregon starting next Friday, 5-27, after finishing second at the Nashville regional shooting 34 under par. We finished second to Texas, which shot -45. Texas is No.2 in the country and we’re No.9. Sophomore Theo Humphrey finished fourth overall shooting 70, 66, 69. Freshman Patrick Martin tied for 9th shooting 70, 71,67, freshman Will Gordon shot 72, 70, 66 to finish tied 9th with Patrick, junior Matthias Schwab shot 73, 70, 66 to finish tied 14th, and senior Carson Jacobs shot 73, 71, 72 to finish tied for 39th. We shot -20 on the final day of the tourney and charged up the leaderboard. It was a fantastic effort by Coach Scott Limbaugh and his team. Now onto Eugene where we’ll face 29 other super teams. It will be very exciting. The job Coach Limbaugh has done with the golf team, like Geoff has done with our girls, has been nothing short of spectacular. Really pumped for the NCAA Championships. Golf Channel will televise. Will keep you posted on times. The Championships start next Friday, May 27th, at Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Oregon. Texas will be tough along with many other teams, so we’ll really have to play our very best, but we obviously have it in us after the performance at the Legends Club in Franklin last week.

Football

Derek and his 2016 Commodores football team will kick it off against Will Muschamp and the South Carolina Gamecocks on Thursday, Sept. 1st at 7 PM CT/8 PM ET at Vanderbilt Stadium on ESPN. Should be a heckuva game and one we really need to win. Would be a huge boost to the team to get this game. Really feel good about our team coming into 2016. There was a good interview with Coach Mason on ESPN.com where he told reporter Chris Low that we are finally ready to compete in the conference. The players are in place and our young and veteran coaching staff looks pumped and ready. I can’t wait. Will talk to Coach Mason this summer and get his thoughts on the upcoming season. Looking forward to Kyle Shurmur in his second year under center. He could be an all time great at Vanderbilt before his career is over. Really like what Kyle can do  this season at quarterback and with Ralph, Dallas, Josh and the backs, and C.J. back at wide receiver, to go along with Trent Sherfield and Latevius Rayford and DeAndre Woods back at tight end, and Andrew Jelks back at left tackle, I’m excited to see what Coach Ludwig can do with the offense. We should be electric. The defense under Coach Mason will be terrific. Love the leadership and stellar play of safety Oren Burks and linebacker Zach Cunningham as our leaders and Nigel Bowden being back at inside linebacker is huge. Zach and Nigel, if Nigel returns to form of three years ago, could be the best inside linebacking tandem in the SEC if not the country. We’ll have a solid front led by Adam Butler and Nifae Lealao, and have an excellent back eight. Really excited to see the product Coach Mason puts on the field this season. I see 7-5 and a bowl game at a minimum and could be much better if we can stay healthy and play like we’re capable of playing. We have a lot of stud players and very good coaching. Pumped for Sept. 1st at Vanderbilt Stadium. Just gotta focus on that right now.

Drew adds point guard transfer; Sehic transferring

Basketball coach Bryce Drew added Xavier point guard Larry Austin to the team this week. Larry is 6’2″, 175. He will not be eligible this season per transfer rules, but will be eligible in 2017-18 for two years. Bryce and the staff are working hard to see if we can get a point guard late in this class. With Wade leaving, it looks like Riley and incoming freshman Payton Willis will handle the duties if we don’t land another guy. Would love to see Riley at the two, that’s where he’s best, but he can certainly play point effectively and Payton had super numbers in high school. Samir Sehic is transferring out of the program. No reason given except that he was close to Kevin Stallings and assistant Adam Cohen. Rumors are that he might be going to Tulane, but that hasn’t been confirmed. With Damian and Wade leaving for the NBA and Sehic transferring, it would be good if we could add a couple of guys late. We still have some outstanding players, and Luke and Djery Baptiste will be our guys in the middle with the super reliable Jeff Roberson adding some muscle underneath. Also, freshman Clevon Brown had excellent numbers in high school. With Matt Fischer Davis, Nolan Cressler, Riley, Joe Toye, Camron Justice, and Payton, we’ll have some excellent talent. We may be more of a shooting, perimeter oriented team next season, but I have full confidence Coach Drew and his staff will have this team playing outstanding basketball next year. I definitely see us going to the tournament.

Will have more coming up in the next couple of days. Love to see our girls get it done today and baseball get a sweep and have some real momentum heading into the postseason.

Byron Nelson Unplugged

TPC Four Seasons Resort at Las Colinas, Irving, Texas, 7,166 yards, par 70

Design: Jay Moorish, 1983

Redesign: D.A. Weibring and Steve Wolfard, 2007

Defending champion: Steven Bowditch, -21, shot 62, 68, 65, 64 to win by four shots over Charley Hoffman, Scott Pickney and Jimmy Walker.

Last week:  World No.1 Jason Day won the Players Championship going wire to wire shooting -14, 63, 66, 73, 71 to win by four shots over Kevin Chappell and capture his third title this season. Day also won the Arnie and the Match Play in back to back wins. With the Arnie and Players’ victories, Day is the fourth player since 1970 to go wire to wire twice in a season. Johnny Miller did it in 1974, Tom Watson did it in 1980, and Tiger did it in 2000 and 2002. Nice pick by Spike. Spike picked Day to win. Second W for Spike this year as he also correctly predicted Adam Scott to win the WGC Cadillac Classic.

White’s World pick last week: Rory, T-12th. Just didn’t putt well enough.

TV: Thursday-Friday: Golf Channel, 4-7 PM ET/3-6 PM CT; Saturday-Sunday:Golf: 1-2:30 PM ET/12-1:30 PM CT; CBS 3-6 PM ET/2-5 PM CT

Weather: Highly questionable tomorrow (Thursday) with major chance of T-storms and heavy rain. Could be a postponement, but maybe they’ll get it in. Wind ENE 7-10 MPH. High 65. Friday, some showers in the area, 60% chance. Wind 7-10 MPH. Rain shouldn’t last that long. Saturday and Sunday look good. Saturday, sunny, 84, wind 6-9 MPH. Sunday, mostly sunny, 84, wind 9-14 MPH.

Featured tee times

7:40 AM CT, 10th Tee: Brandt Snedeker, Matt Kuchar, Louis Oosthuizen. Both Sneds and Kuchar are capable of winning this. Louis, too, for that matter. Good group here going off early, though that’s questionable with the weather. Could be 36 Friday or Saturday.

7:50 AM, No.10: Charl Schwartzel, Sergio Garcia, Keegan Bradley. Keegan won here in 2011, Charl has won this year at the Valspar Championship in March in Tampa. Sergio, well, you never know what you’re gonna get.  Good player, but never sure where his head is at.

12:40 PM: Zach Johnson, Steven Bowditch, Dustin Johnson. Zach a threat every week with his stellar consistency. Bowditch is the defending champion and plays well in Texas. His other victory on tour came at the 2014 Valero Texas Open in San Antonio. Dustin is due, no doubt.

12:50 PM: Jason Dufner, Jordan Spieth, Jimmy Walker. Duf won here in 2012 and has already won this year at the Career Builder in California in January. Walker, like Zach, is a threat every week. Maybe Jordan can get it together this week. Dallas is his hometown and there will be a lot of family and friends there, so we’ll see.

Key holes:

No. 3. 528 yards, Par 4

An extremely challenging hole that features a new fairway which has a lake running down the full length of the right side. Luckily, Tiger’s not playing because they may never get through with the tournament. Three balls in the drink at Congressional from 102 yards. Are you kiddin me? He thinks he can still overtake Jack’s record. He’ll be lucky to win a tournament as this rate. The green is new and is guarded by two bunkers on the left and the right side.

No.11, 323, par 4

Driveable hole that offers the temptation to go for eagle. Dustin will challenge it. Keegan and some others will too, especially on Sunday, when a player is behind by three or four shots and needs to have a shot to gain ground on the leader. The green is large, but there are small bunkers guarding the front right, left and back left.

No.16, 546, par 5

Considered one of the most challenging holes on the course, it has an elevated tee box, the bunkers along the left side and the middle of the fairway take some skill to get around and avoid. The green is tough. With the shape of it and the area around it, it’s difficult to hold.

No.17, 178, par 3

The signature hole on the course and one of the famous ones in golf.  The pin placements tend to be near the lake guarding the front of the green, so players have to be careful to clear the water, and still try to give themselves a makeable birdie putt, particularly on Sunday. For the leader, if he’s got a two shot lead or better, par would be the score here. Amphitheater look here.

No.18, 429, par 4

Slight dogleg left, there is water on the left side that extends from the landing area off the tee shot to the green. Players may need a birdie here. Exciting finishing hole. Should lead to high drama on Sunday.

Contenders

Duf

Playing well. Duf has his game back this year. Finished tied for eighth last year. Shot 66 on Sunday. If he’s got the putter going, Duf could capture this title for the second time.

Jimmy Walker

Finished tied for second here last year and is a Texas native, so Walker knows this course. He’s quite a player, and like I said earlier, a threat every week. Shot 66 in the final round last year.

Tony Finau

A sleeper pick here. Really good young player who finished tied 10th here last year and had a very good PGA Championship showing, as he finished tied for 10th at Whistling Straits and was putting on quite a display of putting. The 26 year old from Salt Lake City is a guy I see doing well this week and possibly winning. His future is bright.

Zach Johnson

I was torn between picking Zach and the player I’m choosing. Zach shot 63 last year in the final round and finished solo fifth. The 12 time winner on tour and two time major winner, is a guy who gets it done all the time. The 40 year old Johnson is the most consistent player on tour outside of Jason Day.

Winner

Going with the 35 year old from Nashvegas. He shot a 64 in the final round here last year to finish in a tie for sixth. Then at Colonial the next week, he finished in a tie for second to winner Chris Kirk. He doesn’t play that well in Florida usually, but he plays well in California and in Texas. See the eight time tour winner capturing Lord Byron’s tournament. Lord Byron Nelson won 52 times on tour with five majors. In 1945, he won 11 tournaments in a row and 18 of 35 PGA Tournaments he played in. Wow, that’s phenomenal. See this guy getting it done at the legend’s tourney this week.

I am trying to just pick a player that makes the cut this week. Since they are playing in Irving Texas, the former home of the Cowboys, I am going to pass on Lee Roy Jordan Speith and in honor of Ed Too Tall Jones I am going with 6′ 4” Dustin Johnson.

Love that Walter!

The 43rd Play-uhs Championship

The fifth Major on tour, and one these guys get totally amped up for.

TPC Sawgrass, the Stadium Course, Ponte Vedra, FL. 7,218 yards, Par 72

Defending champion: Rickie Fowler, -12. Wow, what a show Rickie put on last year. He was six under on his last six holes, birdieing 13, 15, eagleing 16, birdieing 17 and birdieing 18. It was a masterful performance. Rickie won in a playoff over Kevin Kisner, who was super clutch throughout the final round, and Sergio Garcia. Rickie birdied 17 five of the six times he played it, including his clinching putt from five feet for a birdie to capture the title, and, as my man Spike says, “hoisted the hardware.’ It was an epic tournament with a champion who looks to have multiple majors in him, maybe this year. He could very well defend here.

Purse: $10,000,000. First place: $1,800000. Nice payday on Sunday with a victory.

Architect: Pete Dye

72 hole record: Greg Norman,, 1994, 264, -24. That’s incredible.

Key groups:

8:21 AM ET/7:21 AM CT. No.1: Danny Willett, Brandt Sneedeker, Justin Rose. The Masters champion, a guy who is due for a big win in Snedeker, and a major champion in Rose. Quite a pairing.

8:21 AM ET/7:21 AM CT. No.10: Martin Kaymer, Henrik Stenson, Phil. Kaymer won here two years ago and won the U.S. Open at Pinehurst No.2 a month later. Henrik is on the brink of winning something big, and he won here in 2009, so he’s for sure in the hunt. Phil is a five time major winner, a 42 time winner on tour, and won here in 2007. Forty five year old Lefty still has it and is a major factor this weekend.

8:43 AM ET/7:43 AM CT: Tee 10:Branden Grace, Jason Day, Jordan Spieth. Grace won at the RBC Heritage a month ago, Day and Spieth are two of the four best in the world, and I mean really elite. Like all time elite good along with Rory and Rickie, a still emerging all timer.

1:25 PM ET/12:25 PM CT. Tee 1: Zach Johnson, Patrick Reed, Sergio. Zach is a two time major winner and 12 time winner on the tour. Just so solid and accurate. Certainly a factor this weekend. Reed has played well. His last start, he finished second to Charlie Hoffman at the Valero Texas three weeks ago. He’s due. Sergio won here in 2008 and was in a playoff last year. He’s always in the discussion here. He needs a major sooner rather than later, and this could propel him for the U.S., the British and the PGA.

1:36 PM ET/12:36 PM CT: No.1: Adam Scott, Rickie Fowler, Matt Kuchar. Adam has had a super year. He’s adjusted well to the short putter and has back to back wins at the Honda and the WGC Cadillac Championship at the Donald. He won here in 2004 at age 23, the youngest player to ever win at the Players. Also, he’s a winner at Augusta National in 2013, so he knows how to get it done in crunch time. Rickie, of course, will be in the hunt. He’s so clutch. Kuuuch, I don’t know. He might be competitive.

1:36 PM ET/12:36 PM CT: No. 10: Justin Thomas, Davis Love III, Alex Cejka. Justin was right there on Sunday last year, but shot a final round 75 to fall back to T-24. Believe in this young man  from the University of Alabama. Has all the tools to win big, and win majors. Like his mental toughness and his game overall. See him getting it done on the big stage in the clutch soon. Davis is an all time classic. You gotta have the Ryder Cup captain and a former major winner in a key group. The 51 year old Love won 21 times on tour including the 1997 PGA Championship and the 2003 Players. He’s our captain for the Ryder Cup, so he deserves a superstar group. But Alex Cejka? What’s he doing in this group? Is this a misprint? Maybe he’ll be competitive for a while, but he won’t win.

1:47 PM ET/12:47 PM CT: Hideki Matsuyama, Graeme McDowell, Louis Oosthuizen. All three capable of doing well, and Hideki could win it. Hideki is a stud. The other two are former major winners, so they can handle the pressure in big moments.

1:58 PM ET/12:58 PM CT: Tee 1: Bubba, Rory, Dustin. Only first names needed here. Bubba is a two time Masters champion and Rory has won four majors. Dustin is really due. This is a really interesting pairing along with the Spieth, Day pairing.

Weather: Really good for the most part. Friday a chance of t-storms. Sunny, 82, on Sunday, Wind ENE 9-15 MPH.

TV: Thursday-Friday: Golf Channel: 1-7 PM ET/12-6 PM CT. Saturday-Sunday: NBC, 2-7 PM ET/1-6 PM CT. Dan, Johnny, David, Gary, etc.. on the call.

Key holes:

As always the Par 3, 137 yard 17th. The Island hole sets up for some of the greatest drama in golf. The 18th is a tremendously hard, pressurized hole at 445 yards with water all along the right side. If you overcook it off the tee, you’re swimming. if you hit too much of a fade you have trees and thick rough. These last two holes capture some of the greatest drama in golf and setup for historic finishes by stellar champions. Rickie proved that last year.

Last week’s pick at the Wells Fargo: Rory. Finished T-4. Best finish this season, Patrick Reed, 2nd at the Hyundai to Spieth.

Bama last week: Phil T-4. Has won with Hideki this season at the Waste Management in February.

Spike last week: Picked Rickie, T-4. Spike won at the WGC Cadillac with Adam Scott.

Walter: Rickie. T-4. Walt just missed at the Shell Houston with Henrik. Henrik finished at -14, one back of winner Jim Herman.

Please join Bama, Spike and Walter on the blog with commentary-predictions. Chris-Craft, Willie, Pablo, Deano, Gunner, H, Kruegs, both of you, T in Atlanta, WW in Park City, TS in Atlanta, Peter, Brownie, David F. Termite, C, among others, would love your comments and predictions. Everybody is welcome.

Contenders this week:

Patrick Reed

He’s close, very close. His clutchness is unquestionable in my opinion. Will get a major soon, maybe the fifth this weekend.

Phil

Still a horse. Like his chances if his putter is cooperating.

Jason Day

Can’t leave this stud out. He’s hit it 397 yards off the tee this season in Hawaii. This course requires some three woods off the tee, and that’s not his strongest club, but he’ll adjust.

Spieth

He’s going to get it back. The Masters was gut wrenching for him I’m sure. To me, he hadn’t quite recovered from all his world appearances, and all of his media and marketing obligations. He’s been worn out. But he’s eased up on his schedule the last couple of weeks and he’s ready to go this weekend and moving forward into the United States Open at Oakmont CC, June 16th-19th.

Rickie

Can’t leave this stud out either. He can flat out go off, and when he does, he’s almost unbeatable.

This week’s winner

Going back to the well again this week. Like the just turned 27 year old, who shot 66 in the final round at Quail Hollow last week, to capture his first Players title. He’s just too good not to win here.

Rory McIlory

Going with the stud from Northern Ireland to capture his first Players and catapult himself into the next three majors

Not a great day for the team, but Tony Kemp goes yard, other pro baseball guys

Tony goes deep last night for Fresno Grizzlies of the triple A club for Houston Astros

Tony goes deep last night for Fresno Grizzlies of the triple A club for Houston Astros

We got no hit by A&M pitcher Kyle Simonds and lost 3-0. We dropped to 36-12, and 14-10 in the SEC East. Just couldn’t get anything going with the bats. But we have to put it behind us because we have No. 9 Louisville coming to town, at the Hawk, Tuesday at 6 PM CT/7 PM ET on the SEC Network. Then we go to No.1 Florida for games Friday through Sunday. Friday’s game is at 6 PM CT/7 PM ET on the SEC Network, Saturday’s game is at 3 PM CT/4 PM ET on ESPN2, and Sunday’s game is at noon CT/1 PM ET on the SEC Network. Freshman Patrick Raby gave us a pretty good start, but we never could get it going offensively. A&M moved to 37-10 overall and 16-8 in the SEC West.

Tony Kemp hit a homer to deep right for the Fresno Grizzlies in the top of third against the El Paso team in Triple A ball. Tony hitting .297 now. Proud of T. The Houston Astros are 11-20, which is .365 ball, so it would seem like they’d want to make some changes. Tony should get a shot before the year is over. Hopefully sooner than later. Tony is definitely a big league player and can be an excellent big league player.

Dansby went 0 for 3 last night for the Greenville Braves against Chattanooga. He was hit by a pitch. Still hitting .346 in seven games. He’ll be in Atlanta before the year is out. Sooner rather than later, maybe before the All-Star break. I’m hoping he’ll stick with Mississippi until Wednesday, June 15th when he comes to Birmingham and I can talk to him.

Carson pitching Wednesday for the Birmingham Barons. Will be there and have a report with an interview with Carson.

DP got rocked yesterday pretty much by the Yankees as the Sox lost 8-2 at Yankee Stadium. David only got through 4.2 innings and gave up 7 hits, six earned, with three walks and four K’s. He threw 104 pitches with 62 for strikes and 42 balls. Not Dave’s best. He dropped to 4-1 with a 6.75 ERA.

Sonny on the hill at Fenway tomorrow as the A’s are at the Bosox. David will pitch again Thursday vs the Astros at home. Should be a great matchup as he faces usual Houston ace, lefty Dallas Keuchel. Keuchel, like his team, has been struggling this season at 2-4 with a 4,70 ERA. But he’s capable, so a big test for David on Thursday. Sonny faces Clay Bucholz tomorrow night.

Pedro went 0 for 3 last night with a walk as DH for the O’s and Ryan Flaherty, who’s become the O’s regular third baseman with shortstop J.J., Hardy breaking his foot and Manny Machado taking over at shortstop, was 1 for 3 and the O’s split a twin bill with a 5-2 nightcap win over the A’s. The A’s won the first game 8-4. The Orioles moved to 17-12 and lead the Bosox by a game in the AL East. The Sox are at 17-13 and play the Yankees tonight on Sunday Night Baseball at 8 PM ET/ 7 PM CT on ESPN.

Wow, what a night from Kyle Wright, Carson gets the W, David on the hill today against the Yanks

Kyle was phenomenal last night

Kyle was phenomenal last night

Our No.8 team, led by the awesome Kyle Wright on the mound, defeated the No.2 Texas A&M Aggies, 6-1 at Blue Bell Park before 6,054 fans.

Kyle pitched a gem, going 7, allowing just three hits, 0 runs, with one walk and six K’s. It was a masterpiece by our stud right handed sophomore. Kyle threw 98 pitches with 65 for strikes and 33 balls. He was on fire. His fastball was clocking 95-96, his change up was superb and his curve was biting and just totally fooling the A&M hitters that came in hitting .324 as a team. Jeren Kendall led off last night and was three for four, and he stole three bases raising his total to 23 on the season in 30 attempts. Jeren is a phenomenal player for us and is now hitting .356. DH Alonzo Jones had an RBI sac fly for us and shortstop Connor Kaiser had a clutch two out Ribeye single in the top of the eighth.  Collin Snider came in and pitched a perfect 8th, and Ben Bowden, though he ran in a little trouble, finished it off in the 9th. Played stellar defense also with 0 errors. Kyle moved to 6-3 on the season and has a 1.88 ERA now. We moved to 36-11 on the season and 14-9 in the SEC. A&M dropped to 36-10 and 15-8 in conference.

We face the Aggies in the rubber game of the series with freshman right hander Patrick Raby going for us. Patrick is 6-0 with a 1.90 ERA with 14 walks and 52 strikeouts. Pitching Coach Scott Brown likes him because, “he throws strikes. We’ll face right hander Kyle Simonds, who is 7-1 with a 2.83 ERA will get the start for the Aggies. He was good in his last start against Arkansas on the road last Sunday going a complete game and getting the win. This would be huge to take this series.

Carson went six last night for the Birmingham Barons at the Montgomery Biscuits, and got the win, as the Barons defeated the Biscuits, 5-2. Carson went six, gave up five hits, two earned with two walks and seven K’s. Carson moved to 3-3 on the season and now has a 4.99 ERA. He has won his last three outings. C is figuring it out. Carson threw 93 pitches with 61 for strikes and 32 for balls, solid number, almost 2:1 strike ratio. Carson is so much like Sonny. They rely on their hard fastball and their sliders and incredible curves and sometimes the batters don’t swing at them, but they’re such competitors. Carson’s fastball looked 96, his curve was awesome and he mixed in his slider and change up well. He’s awesome. Carson scheduled to be on the hill Wednesday in B’ham at 11 AM central. I will be there for the matinee and will talk to the man.

Dansby playing tonight for the Ms. Braves. He got a hit last night. Will have a report on Dans as well tomorrow.

David Price on the hill right now for the Sox against the Yanks. Will have that report tomorrow as well.
