Zurich Classic on tour this week; preview, prediction

This week: Zurich Classic of New Orleans

TPC Louisiana, 7,425 yards, par 72

Defending champion: Justin Rose

Course designer: Pete Dye, 2004

TV: Thursday-Friday: Golf Channel, 2-5 PM CT/3-6 PM ET; Saturday-Sunday:Golf  12-1:30 PM CT/1-2:30 PM ET; CBS 2-5 PM CT/3-6 PM ET.

Weather: OK, not great. Mid 80’s all four days. Thursday, sunny but possible t-storm, Friday, sunny, Saturday partly cloudy, Sunday, strong t-storms possible in the AM, so could be out by early in the morning. Winds: 8-15 throughout the tournament, could be stronger Sunday afternoon after system passes through.

Key groups Thursday:

Teeing off on No.10 @ 7:40 AM CT:

Jason Day, Danny Lee, Steve Stricker.

Day is No.1 in the world, and leads the tour in victories since 2012 with 8 including two this year, back to back, at the Arnie and the WGC Match Play. Spieth is next with 6 and Bubba, Rory and Jimmy Walker are tied for third with 5. Capable every week with his supreme talent. Lee won at the Greenbriar Classic last July. I get him confused a lot with John Huh? But he’s a solid  player. The 49 year old Stricker is still competing hard on Tour, and leads the Tour in strokes gained putting this year. He’s always been a stellar putter. He has 12 victories on the tour in his career. Hasn’t ever been able to snag a major, but has had a very solid career.

No.10 @ 7:50 AM

Rickie Fowler, Ben Crane, Jason Bohn

Rickie is capable every week like Day. He’s No.5 in the world. The 27 year old has been getting closer and closer to a major. Has taken a break for a couple of weeks so his batteries are recharged and ready. Crane’s a good player. Jason Bohn, the 43 year old who played at the University of Alabama, won here in 2010, and is a really interesting story. He had a heart attack this winter, and had 99% blockage in an artery, which doctors call, “a widow maker.” But he’s come back, he says he’s learned to enjoy life every day and says the heart attack has been the best thing that has happened in his life. He’s really mellowed as he used to be highly emotional and had a major temper, and appreciates every day. It’s a super story.

No.1 @ 12:40 PM

Charley Hoffman, Smylie Koffman, David Toms

Charley won last week at the Valero Texas with a clutch 14 foot birdie putt on 18 to hold off Patrick Reed by a shot. It was awesome to see the 39 year old capture a tour victory after coming so close this season and not being able to close on Sundays. Charley told the CBS reporter afterwards that he always felt like he was a closer and he proved it last week. He has four PGA Tour victories on his resume with last week’s win.

Smylie played in the final group with Spieth at Augusta National earlier this month. Must have been a thrill for the 24 year old from Vestavia Hills, Alabama. He didn’t end up that well on Sunday finishing tied for 29th with a final round 81, but he has won this season at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open in Las Vegas last October. The future looks bright for Kaufman. You never know, but he’s got some serious talent. The 49 year old Toms is an LSU guy, so he’s on his home turf. Toms has won 13 times on tour in his career, that’s impressive. And that includes the 2001 PGA Championship at the Atlanta Athletic Club.

No.1 @12:50 PM

Justin Rose, Billy Horschel, K.J. Choi

Rosie is the defending champion. At TPC Louisiana his score to par, -60, his scoring average, 68.3, his birdies/eagles, 82, and his rounds in the 60’s, 13, all are No.1 since 2012. So he’s most definitely a factor once again, though Rose himself said the course doesn’t remember what you did last year. Horschel is the 2013 champion. He sank a super clutch 25 foot birdie putt for the victory in ’13 and gave it a passionate fist pump and reaction. It was memorable. The 45 year old Choi has eight tour wins in his career and almost won at Torrey Pines this year, but impossible playing conditions on a Monday finish, allowed Brandt Snedeker, who played an awesome final Sunday round 69  at the Farmers in nearly impossible conditions as well, and didn’t have to play in the 35 MPH winds on Monday, to capture his second Farmers’ title. K.J., who shot 76 on that Monday, has issues with his putter sometimes, but has always been one of the best ball strikers on tour.

Key holes

No.13, 403 yards, Par 4

A hole that really long players, Bubba, J.B. Holmes, Dustin Johnson-like players, with wind at their backs, can go for. It’s a pretty high risk-reward hole. Can either be a kick in birdie or a costly bogey on Sunday.

No.18, 589 yards, Par 5

Players who can really take it deep could go for this hole in two. There are mounds throughout the hole off the fairway and bunkers by the green and a water hazard to the right. The leader on Sunday’s best bet would be to make it a three shot hole and sink a birdie putt to clinch it. There will be a lot of birdies here, though Sunday could be interesting with the wind probably picking up after the morning storms, if they happen.

Prediction

I’m going with the 29 year old former Florida Gator. He’s won three times on tour and captured the Fed Ex Cup in 2014. He finished tied for fourth last week at San Antonio, and he’s ready to capture his fourth tour victory.

Billy Horschel

Like this guy to capture his second Zurich title in four years

Like this guy to capture his second Zurich title in four years

Sleeper pick:

Andrew Loupe

This 27 year old LSU product and native of Baton Rouge could arguably be the best athlete on the tour, although Dustin Johnson supporters would take exception to that. This guy works out with a trainer in Baton Rouge who says he’s better athletically than guys he works out who play on Sundays, and in Major League baseball. I watched him stand flat footed and jump on top of a four foot box on Inside the PGA Tour. He was an all state basketball player in Baton Rouge. His clubhead speed is 125 MPH, which is the fastest on tour. I like this guy’s athletic ability and he’s shown clutchness. Loupe has a shot to get it done.

Like Loupe to be in the mix and maybe pull it off on Sunday

Prediction for Valero Texas Open

TPC San Antonio, AT&T Oaks Course, 7, 435 yards, Par 72

Defending champion: Jimmy Walker, -11 winning score

TV times:

Golf Channel: Thursday-Friday 2 PM-5 PM CT/3-6 PM ET

CBS: Saturday-Sunday 2-5 PM CT/3-6 PM ET

Key hole: No. 18. 591 yards, Par 5

Terrific finishing hole that usually leads to stellar drama. Three shot hole for most every player in the field as it is an uphill hole. Players need to shape their tee shots left to right in order to remain in the fairway that slopes right to left. The second shot should be played up the right side and avoid the creek that bisects the fairway and what is described as the “spectacular” bunkers on the right side by the TPC San Antonio staff. The third shot will be a short iron played uphill to a green that has three tiers and is protected by a creek in front and three bunkers around the green. Players will have visions of birdieing this final hole to win the Valero Texas Open.

Prediction

I’m going to go outside of the box a little here and go with the 36 year old native Texan, from Amarillo. He was in a playoff in 2015 at the Shell Houston with J.B. Holmes and Jordan Spieth, in which Holmes won by beating him on the second playoff hole, but it was a war and this guy showed a lot of mental toughness and clutchness. He’s won three times on tour in his career. He won the Shell Houston in 2008,  the Mayakoba Golf Classic in Cancun, Mejico in 2011, and the Sony Open in Honolulu in 2012.  He finished tied 39th last week at the RBC Heritage, but I like his roots in Texas and his knowing how to play these courses. The weather forecast looks excellent with plenty of sun. The winds Sunday are predicted to be  8-15 MPH, so that’ll be a factor in club selection. Should be a very compelling tournament with an excellent field including Phil, Brandt Snedeker, Patrick Reed, Zach Johnson, Jimmy Walker, Brooks Koepka, quite a few excellent players. Going with the 6’3″, 230 pound hoss from Amarillo by way of Virginia Tech.

Johnson Wagner

Like the Virginia Tech player, Johnson Wagner, to take home the victory from San Antone

Like the Virginia Tech player, Johnson Wagner, to take home the victory from San Antone

Darkhorse:

Bryson DeChambeau

22 year old from Modesto, California by way of SMU. Just turned pro and really making some noise. Finished tied 21st at the Masters two weeks ago as an amateur, turned pro a week ago before the RBC Heritage, and finished tied fourth at Harbour Town in Hilton Head shooting a final round 68. He’s on his home turf, too, somewhat, so I like his chances as well.

NBA championship pick

Didn’t get around to this Saturday, but here are my predictions for the respective NBA conference championship series and the Finals.

Eastern Conference Championship series

Cavs over Toronto Raptors in 7

Western Conference Championship series

Golden State Warriors over San Antonio Spurs in 7

Finals

Like Steph and the Warriors to deny LeBron a third NBA championship and capture back to back NBA titles after posting a historic 73 win season, that set the mark for the most regular season victories ever by an NBA team overtaking the 1996 Chicago Bulls 72-10 record. Steph and the Warriors finished 73-9 and I don’t see them slowing up. Steph is dealing with an ankle issue right now, not major, but Coach Steve Kerr may keep him out of the Warriors’ first round playoff game at home against the Houston Rockets tonight, the second game of the series. The Warriors blasted the Rockets Saturday Night at Oracle Arena in Oakland. There is precedent to sitting Steph against the Rockets. Kerr did it earlier this season for precautionary measures as Steph was a little banged up, and the Warriors defeated the Rockets, 114-110, in Houston with Klay Thompson going off for 38 points. So it’s doable without Steph, but it’ll be harder that’s for sure. But I say if there’s any problem with the ankle, I’d sit Steph tonight. He’s had ankle issues throughout his career and the Warriors CANNOT win it all without Steph. That’s like the Bulls losing Michael Jordan in the playoffs in the 1990’s. Couldn’t win without him and the Warriors can’t win without Steph.

Might be a good move to sit Steph tonight. Will make it harder for the Warriors to win, but will be the right move for the long haul. Steph and the Warriors beat the Cavs convincingly to capture the Larry O’Brien Championship Trophy for the second year in a row. They’ll have a tougher time with the Spurs in the conference championship series, The Spurs are outstanding and will take them to the limit.

Warriors over Cavs in 5

Sonny like David was awesome

Sonny like David was awesome

David Price and the BoSox have taken two of three from the hitting machine that it the Toronto Blue Jays as they play the fourth game of the series in Fenway right now. The BoSox are up 1-0 in the top of the fifth with Clay Bucholtz on the mound for the Sox.

On Saturday afternoon at Fenway, David pitched a beauty, going seven, giving up six hits, two earned runs, with zero walks and nine K’s. DP is a strike throwing, strikeout machine. David threw 107 pitches with 74 for strikes and 33 balls, better than a 2:1 strike to walk ratio, which is outstanding. David moved to 2-0 on the season and now has a 4.50 ERA and a 1.11 WHIP, which is getting closer and closer to being stellar. Anything under 1.15 WHIP (walks and hits per innings pitched) is a good number and 1.0 or less is exceptional. David threw 92-93 a lot of the time and relied on his fastball against the Blue Jays hitter. He used his cutter some and his 80-84 MPH change up is a weapon now. He didn’t use his curve ball much, but he didn’t need it. He’ll keep progressing with that pitch as the season moves on. I also see him hitting 95 and maybe better as the season progresses. He didn’t need to hit the high 90’s on Saturday. His stuff was really good. After Josh Donaldson tripled off David in the first, Joey “Bats” Bautista, hit one into deep left center off the Green Monster wall. Donaldson scored and Bats tried to stretch it to a triple. Center fielder Jackie Bradley Jr, threw a pretty good rocket to third, third baseman Travis Shaw received it behind the bag and made a lunge at Bats to tag him out. Third base umpire Ted Barrett called Bats out, and Bats didn’t like it. It was close. Jays manager John Gibbons challenged it, but the call held up in New York, so Bats was out. That was huge. It was a really close play, but it looked like Shaw just got Bats’ wrist before he touched the bag. Could have gone either way, but it was inconclusive and looked like Shaw could have very well gotten him. That was a big play for Dave and the Sox. David got out of that jam and had some trouble in a few other innings, like any other pitcher would against that lineup, but battled out of them and pitched very well. Happy for Dave after a tough outing against the Orioles. It was a big win for his team as well. Shortstop Xander Bogaerts had the big hit for the Sox with a three run shot. Bogaerts is a super player as is right fielder Mookie Betts. Dustin Pedroia is back at second after struggling with some injuries last year and that’s huge. He’s having a good year so far. Big Papi is still a hitting machine. I wish the Boston brass could talk Papi into coming back another year next year and not retiring. He hits like a 25 year old still. It’s amazing.

The Sox won Friday and Saturday and lost yesterday, so it would be good to take three of four with a W today. Sox still up 1-0 top 6.

David will go again this Thursday at 12:35 PM CT/1:35 ET at Fenway against his old team, the Tampa Bay Rays. He’ll face talented right hander Jake Odorizzi of the Rays, whom Dave was kind of a big brother too in Tampa. Love to watch DP compete. This is a good team he’s a part of that has a chance to be elite with good starting pitching from the other guys in the rotation. Everything else is in place for the Sox to have a big year. The bullpen is excellent with Koji Uehara and a revived Craig Kimbrel who brings it 98 and now looks unhittable. The Sox are still up 1-0 heading into the top of the sixth. Probably will need more than one run to beat the Jays, though Bucholtz is pitching well. That would be huge if Bucholtz could give the Sox a good year. He’s been an awesome pitcher in the past, and if he can find his old form, that would be a major boost to the staff. The BoSox are 6-5 and two games back of the 8-3 Orioles. David has walked only four this year and struck out 27 in 18 innings. That’s superb.

Sonny had a gutsy performance Saturday for the A’s in their 5-3 victory over the outstanding KC Royals. Sonny went a hard fought six, giving up seven hits, two runs, with only one earned run, one walk and six K’s. Sonny threw 114 pitches with 76 for strikes and 38 for balls. It was a typical courageous performance from Sonny who gives it everything he’s got every time out, just like David. Sonny’s fastball was 92-93 and he was locating it really well, to the lower corners. He had thrown 103 pitches going into the sixth, but got out of the sixth pretty quickly. Manager Bob Melvin said in the postgame that Sonny showed his typical high character effort coming out in the sixth because he knew there might be a short leash if he got in trouble. Melvin was highly complimentary of Sonny as a person and a competitor in his postgame. The bullpen, which had thrown 76 pitches the night before, really needed Sonny to at least give them six, and Sonny delivered. Proud for Sonny. The A’s beat the Royals yesterday and moved to 6-7 on the season, one game back of AL West leading Texas. The A’s go to Yankee Stadium this week and Sonny will pitch again Saturday against Toronto and solid left hander J.A. Happ. Sonny is 2-1, with a 2.33 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP.  Sonny has walked eight and struck out 17 in 19.1 innings. Sonny just battles.

Pedro got a hit Saturday Night against the Rangers. First single of the season. It was a solid hit. He’s getting walked a lot. He’s getting it together. Manager Buck Showalter is not hitting Pedro against leftys right now as a DH, but if he gets in one of those zones that Pedro can get in, Showalter may turn him loose against leftys. Still think Pedro fell behind when he didn’t get to spring training till late in the spring training season because nobody picked him up amazingly until the Orioles did halfway through the spring, so he will keep getting better. Would love for him to get a shot at first to give Chris Davis a break every now and then. Still think he can play well in the infield. He got a bad rap by the media, and he did struggle some for a while, but at the end of last season, he was playing great first for the Pirates. I just think he needs another shot there at some point. He’s such a great athlete and he can definitely play there.

Ryan Flaherty is not getting much time yet for the Orioles because their lineup is so good. Hopefully Ryan can get some playing time as the season progresses. I’m sure he will. Curt Casali is playing a lot of catcher for the Rays and doing a good job behind the plate. Needs to get his bat going a little bit, but is solid behind the dish. Curt is a good hitter. He’ll get the lumber going soon. I saw Drew Verhagen pitch for the Tigers in the bottom of the eighth yesterday against the Astros. I was pulling for Houston in the game overall because they are my pick to win the World Series, but was pulling for Drew to get them out as the Astros were leading. Drew did a nice job allowing no runs and one hit. The Stros won the game though. Haven’t seen anything on Caleb Cotham for the Reds yet, but will keep an eye out for him and look for any of our guys who might get a shot to come up to the majors. Tony Kemp and Mike Yaz are our best candidates, though Tony and Mike, in the Astros and Orioles minors respectively, are trying to crack a tough 25 man roster as both of those teams are very good. But they’re great players and should get a shot down the road. Will keep an eye on Tony, Yaz, Carson, Dans, and our other guys in the minors and keep you posted. Man, has Corbs churned’em out.

Baseball takes the series vs UK

Speaking of Corbs, we took two of three from Kentucky over the weekend. Jordan Sheffield was Awesome with a capital A on Friday Night at the Hawk. Sheff pitched a complete game, five hit shutout as we defeated the Wildcats, 3-0. Sheff allowed just five hits, walked two and struck out 14 Wildcat batters. He was bringing it 98, and his location was exceptional. Sheff was on fire. Sheff threw 124 pitches with 82 for strikes and 42 balls. His change up was dynamite and his fastball was superb. Sheff has all the tools. If he can get his control in good shape, like he did Friday Night, he’ll be unhittable. Pumped for Sheff.

Saturday we were down 2-1 entering the bottom of the eighth, but the super clutch Bryan Reynolds stroked a sharp two run single to center and Ben Bowden closed the deal with his seventh save of the season. Kyle Wright gave us a solid start going seven, giving up five hits, one run, which was unearned, with two walks and six K’s. Matt Ruppenthal gave up an unearned run in the eighth, but Reynolds’ clutchness came through again, and Ben struck out two of the batters he faced in the ninth with his 95 MPH fastball. Kyle gave us a real quality start. We did commit four errors in that game, so we HAVE to get that cleaned up.

We lost 3-0 yesterday. Just couldn’t get the bats going, and while John Kilichowski gave us some pretty good work out of the bullpen and Patrick Raby gave us a pretty decent start, we just didn’t hit against some good Kentucky pitching. John didn’t get a great defensive play behind him when we dropped a pop fly out right near the seats which could have gotten John out of the inning. It wasn’t an easy catch, but could have been made. We loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth with two outs, but Jeren Kendall, who usually thrives in those situations and will again soon, bounced out to third to end the game. We may see John K as our starter on Sunday in the near future maybe beginning this weekend.

We play Central Arkansas tomorrow, Tuesday, at home @ 5:30 PM CT/6:30 PM ET on the SEC Network+ on the computer. then we head to Tennessee for the weekend,. All three of those games will be on SEC Network+. Friday’s game is at 5 PM CT/6 PM ET, Saturday’s game is at 3 PM CT/4 PM ET, and Sundays’ game is at 1 PM CT/2 PM ET. Central Arkansas is 15-19 and 6-9 in the Southland Conference. Will have more on them tomorrow. UT is 4-11 in the SEC and 19-18 overall. They took the first game of their series at Auburn Thursday Night, 13-4, but lost the next two. Will have more on the Vols series after the Central Arkansas game tomorrow night. Will be interesting to see who Corbs throws tomorrow night. Would like to establish two or three good mid week starters as we’ll need them in the postseason. Need to take care of business tomorrow night and get ready for a tough weekend series at UT. They will be chomping at the bit to play us. Can’t overlook tomorrow night though. Need to keep playing well. We are now 9-6 in the conference and tied for third with UK in the East. Florida and South Carolina lead the East at 11-4. We are 28-8 overall. The rankings just came out and we’re fourth in the coaches and D-1 baseball.com polls. No.1 Miami, No.2 Florida and No.3 A&M are in front of us in both polls. Will have a write up Wednesday on tomorrow night’s game.

Women’s tennis finishes the regular season very strongly; readies themselves for postseason play

The girls outlasted No.12 Auburn Friday, 4-3, in a hard fought match that was decided when Courtney Colton clinched the victory at No.4 singles. Courtney won her match 6-0, 6-3, Georgina Sellyn won her match at No.5, 6-2, 6-3, and Fernanda Contreras won her match at No.6, 6-0, 6-0. Sydney won at No.1, 6-4, 6-1, and Frances and Astra had split sets when Courtney clinched it. That was Courtney’s fifth time this season she has clinched a match for us. She’s been super clutch. We also won the doubles point with Astra and Frances winning their match, 6-4, and Fernanda and Georgina winning their match, 6-3. It was a good match for us. It tested our mental toughness. I’m sure Geoff was pleased with how we competed and the clutchness of Courtney, Georgina and Fernanda along with our top three.

We beat Alabama yesterday, 6-1, to finish the regular season 18-4 and 11-2 in the conference. After losing to South Carolina and Florida on the road early in the season, two very good teams, we went on to win 10 conference matches in a row and head to Baton Rouge on Wednesday for the conference tournament on a roll. We are presently ranked sixth in the country by the ITA. The new rankings will be released tomorrow. Georgia is No.3 nationally  and Florida is No.4. South Carolina is 11, Auburn is 12, LSU is 18, A&M is 19 and Kentucky is 20, so we have our work cut out for us in the SEC. Big day on Wednesday. Frances is still ranked No. 13 nationally, Sydney is 19 and Astra is 21st. With the new rankings out tomorrow, will let you know where we stand as a team and where Frances, Sydney and Astra are. There should be some sort of video for the SEC, so will check on that as well.

Men’s tennis with a huge weekend

Our men’s team upset No.23 Mississippi State on Friday on the road, 4-2, which was huge. Then we came back and defeated No. 34 Alabama and Lipscomb yesterday in a match at Tuscaloosa. We finished the regular season 16-12 overall and 6-6 in the SEC. We now head to the SEC tournament in Columbia, SC  this Friday, April 21st, for the entire weekend. We’ve got a lot of momentum now. In the State match, we won the doubles point, but lost at No.’s 1 and 2, but then came back at No. 3 as No.97 Cameron Klinger defeated No. 64 Rishab Agarwai of State, 6-4, 6-3. No.4 Baker Newman won his match, 6-0, 6-1, and No. 5 Kris Yee won his match, 6-4, 6-4. Huge victory for the guys. We are ranked No.45 in the country right now. Georgia is sixth, A&M is 11th, Arkansas is 12th and Florida is 13th, so we have some heavy competition heading into Columbia. David Valent, our No.1 player, is ranked 40th in the country. The Alabama and Lipscomb wins were good momentum builders for the conference tournament. Proud for Coach Ian Duvenhage and the team. Maybe we can do some damage at the conference tournament and get into the NCAA’s. We’ve definitely got a shot.

Men’s golf struggles at SEC tourney, but still right in the hunt for a really good NCAA showing; Brandt, Luke, John Curran

The guys finished eighth at the SEC Championship in Sea Island. Not our best, but Coach Scott Limbaugh says it’s important for us to keep a positive attitude heading into the regionals. We will actually host a regional, which will start Monday, May 16th. And we’ve had a great year so far. Georgia won the conference tourney at +13 and we were +34. We are ranked seventh in the country by Golfstat. So a lot to look forward to for the team. Matthias Schwab, Will Gordon, Patrick Martin and our other guys didn’t have their best weekends, but we won the Mason Rudolph in Nashville, we won the Schenkel Invitational in Statesboro, Georgia and won the four man Farm Links Match play in Sylacauga, AL. in March and April, so the guys are definitely capable.

The women finished tenth at the SEC Championship and wait to hear from the NCAA on if they get a spot. Not sure we will, but we’ve had good success in the past, so maybe we’ll sneak in.

Brandt did not make the cut at the RBC Heritage this past weekend, a tournament that South African Branden Grace won. Luke made the cut, but had a tough Saturday and Sunday, and JC didn’t make the cut either. All three will be playing this weekend at the Valero Texas Open at TPC San Antonio. Glad to see Brandt competing so much. He still really wants that first major. Brandt finished T-10th at Augusta National shooting 71-72, 74, 72 in very difficult scoring conditions; there was a ton of wind. He finished +1 for the Masters. The U.S. Open is at Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, PA, just outside Philadelphia, June 16th-19th, so Brandt will be gunning for that. Also, the Players Championship is a huge tournament. The players call that tournament their “fifth major”, and it will be played May 12th-15th at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra, Florida, home of the PGA headquarters. So should be exciting. Brandt has some good opportunities left as do Luke and John Curran. Will be exciting to see how our guys fare.

The Bosox just lost to the Blue Jays, 4-3. That’s a bummer. Split a four game set with the Jays. We are now 6-6. Host Tampa Bay tomorrow through Thursday, then go to Houston for the weekend. We’re in second, two games back of the Orioles, who are 8-3.

Good stuff for the Vanderbilt baseball team with some young guys making their mark; young, energetic assistants on football staff; men’s golf

John Kilichowski is back from injury and gave us an outstanding inning of work Tuesday Night. Could be a weekend guy by the time it's all said and done

John Kilichowski is back from injury and gave us an outstanding inning of work Tuesday Night. Could be a weekend guy by the time it’s all said and done

Our No.5 baseball team won over Middle Tennessee State Tuesday night at home, 7-4, and it was a really good game for us in a lot of ways. Jeren Kendall and Bryan Reynolds were both two-for-four, Jeren with a ribbie and Bryan with two. Reynolds hit his 10th double of the season. Freshman Ethan Paul played first and was three-for-five with a triple. Great stuff from Ethan. Freshman Connor Kaiser played short and was two for three with three runs scored. We turned two double plays. Senior Tyler Campbell played second, and this combo of Kaiser and Campbell at short and second really seems to be working out well. Corbs has been working different combinations to see if he can find the right one. Looks like he has his up the middle crew intact now. Some other good news in the hitting and pitching departments were that two of our freshman who had been hurt, both played last night and played well. Freshman Julian Infante, who can play either corner of the infield, came in as a pinch hitter and got a base hit, a sharp hit to the outfield. Heard an interview with Julian afterwards. Awesome kid. He’ll help us this year. Also, freshman Donnie Everett came in and pitched an inning, and threw 14 pitches, 12 for strikes, he didn’t allow a run and was outstanding. Lefty Ryan Johnson started and pitched four innings for us and did a nice job. Collin Snider kind of got knocked around a little bit in an inning of work, giving up three hits and two runs, but I still believe in Collin. He’ll keep getting better. Matt Ruppenthal gave us two superb innings with no runs, no hits, no walks and three K’s. Matt kind of had a rough outing against LSU last Saturday, but he is super talented. Then, some other great news, John Kilichowski, who is just getting back from injury, he pitched last Saturday at LSU, pitched an inning and struck out all three batters he faced. Great to see John back out there and pitching well. John can really help us, maybe even as a weekend guy. We’ll see what Corbs wants to do with John. Always have loved John’s arm and he gives us another stellar lefty along with Ben Bowden.

Overall, a good performance from the team as we head into a huge weekend series at home against the Kentucky Wildcats, which are ranked No.18 in the country. We are 26-7 overall and 7-5 in the conference. Kentucky is 8-4 in the SEC and 22-10 overall. They lost to No.9 Louisville at home last night, 9-6. But they have taken two of three from No. 3 Florida at home and took two of three from Alabama last weekend at home. We’ll more than likely go with Jordan Sheffield Friday Night, Kyle Wright on Saturday, and I imagine Sunday is to be determined. Maybe Hayden Stone, maybe Kilichowski. Both solid arms. Friday night’s game is at 6:30 PM CT/7:30 PM ET, Saturday’s game is at 2 PM CT/3 PM ET, and Sunday’s game is at 1 PM CT/2 PM ET. Friday and Saturday’s games are on SEC Network+ online, but Sunday’s game is not scheduled to be broadcast on video. If you want to keep up with the game, you may need to get on gametracker on the vucommodores.com website. Big deal for the team this weekend. Will have Kentucky’s starters and ours as soon as it is announced on the vucommodores.com website.

MLB guys

Pedro went one for two for the Orioles last night against the BoSox at Fenway. He hit a solid single to right and had two walks and a ground out to second. The Sox won 4-2 but really needed it. The Orioles came into the game at 7-0 and David and the Sox needed to catch up in the standings. The BoSox moved to 4-4 on the season and the O’s dropped to 7-1. It’s tough when it’s Pedro’s and Ryan Flaherty’s team versus David’s team, but had to pull for the Sox last night, even though I was really pulling for Pedro to do well. Wanted David and the Sox to get the victory to get closer to the red hot O’s. The Yankees are in second in the AL East at 4-3 and the BoSox are third at 4-4, while the Jays, another stellar team, are 4-5. DP pitches against the Jays on Sunday at Fenway. Game time is 12:35 PM CT/1:35 PM ET. DP is facing Aaron Sanchez of Toronto who is 0-0 in two starts, but has a 1.38 ERA and an 0.85 WHIP, walks plus hits per innings pitched, which is an excellent number. David is 1-0 with a 5.73 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP. He’ll get those numbers down. Just had a rough inning against the O’s on Monday, but pitching well overall. He was hitting 93-94 consistently against the O’s and hit 95 one time. His change up was pretty good, too, and he threw some pretty good cutters. Didn’t really throw the curve though it’s really become a pretty good pitch for him. It’s a tough assignment pitching against these hitting juggernauts in the AL East. Toronto has huge bats with Josh Donaldson, Joey Bats, Edwin Encarnacion and a host of others. So it’s a tough challenge for Dave. The Yankees are a hitting machine as well, and Dave will see them a lot. Will look forward to watching Dave on Sunday.

Sonny goes Sunday against another tough team to beat, the defending world champion KC Royals. Kris Medlin will face Sonny, and he’s very good. Sonny is 1-1 with a 2.70 ERA and a 1.20 WHiP. Both David’s and Sonny’s WHIP numbers will go down. Medlin is 1-0 with a 3.60 ERA and a 2.00 WHIP, which is pretty high. But he’s solid and the Royals’ lineup is tough. Sonny will be severely tested.

Great to see Pedro start hitting it. Would love to see him get hot. Ryan hasn’t seen a ton of action, but he’ll get his opportunities, and Curt Casali is platooning at catcher in Tampa. The A’s are 4-6 and the Rays are 3-5.

Football

There was a great story yesterday or the day before about four of our young football assistants on vucommodores.com.

Cortez Hankton, our wide receivers coach, is 35, and did a great job coaching wide outs at Dartmouth. Cortez enters his second season under Coach Mason and Coach Ludwig, and I’m ready to see what he can do with Trent Sherfield, C.J. Duncan and Caleb Scott among others.

C.J. Ah You, 33, is our defensive line coach, and in his first year. The kids love him and he’s played in the NFL and for Oklahoma where he was a very good player. I think he’ll do well with Adam Butler, Nifae Lealao, Jay Woods and the rest of our d line. Like what C. J. can bring to the staff and to the players on the d line.

Chris Marve, 26, a former stud Commodore linebacker, will be coaching our inside linebackers. Chris is such a hard worker, I watched him last year in practice and in games and he’s got an amazing motor and passion for coaching. Chris is super smart. He worked as a defensive graduate assistant for Coach Mason last year, and is in his first year as inside linebackers coach. Love what he can do with Zach Cunningham, Nigel Bowden and company. They really will play hard for him, and they will be coached up well.

Marc Mattioli, 26, will take over the secondary this season for Coach Mason. Mattioli is in his second year on the staff and will run the whole secondary for the first time, as former cornerbacks coach Brett Maxie took a secondary job for the Tampa Bay Bucs. Coach Mason will work closely with Marc, as Coach Mason is heavily involved in the secondary, so safety Oren Burks and cornerback Torren McGaster, our leaders and terrific players, will be really coached up well by Coach Mattioli and Coach Mason. Coach Mason will again run the defense. He will have a major influence on the secondary.

Three things I love about this: 1. Our young coaches will have super energy on the field and in their coaching, 2. they will recruit through the roof, and 3. working for Coach Mason, and with our veteran coaches, new outside linebackers coach Osia Lewis, who came over after a highly esteemed 25 year career including his last stop at San Diego State, which was an excellent team with an outstanding defense, veteran coach Jeff Genyk, who will be in his first year and coach running backs and special teams. Coach Ludwig, Coach Genyk, Coach Hankton, and first year coach, but veteran, offensive line coach Cameron Norcross, who came over from Fresno State where he had major success should be an outstanding combination. Really excited about the addition of Coach Norcross. He’s 38 and brings a ton of energy and toughness to our o line and will be an excellent recruiter. And Coach Gerry Gdowski will coach our quarterbacks and be our recruiting coordinator. So I love this staff. Our young coaches are going to be outstanding working with our veteran coaches and our veteran and young players. Pretty excited for South Carolina, Thursday, Sept. 1st, time to be determined, at Vanderbilt Stadium.

Men’s Golf

The No.7 men’s golf team will be competing in the SEC championship in Sea Island, Georgia this weekend. The guys will tee it up on the par-70, 7,055 yard course with number one seed Georgia and number two seed Auburn tomorrow at 7:30 AM ET/6:30 AM CT. We are the number three seed. You can keep up with the tournament on golfstat.com, which will show the leaderboard and stats. Junior Matthias Schwab and freshmen Patrick Martin and Will Gordon are our horses, but we’ve gotten good play from Theo Humphrey and Carson Jacobs as well. We’ll need all five to play well.

Women’s tennis

The girls are in action against Auburn and Alabama, Friday and Sunday, respectively. We play Auburn tomorrow at 4 PM CT at home, and play Alabama Sunday at 1 PM CT at home as well. We are 16-4 overall and 9-2 in the SEC and ranked No.6 in the country by the ITA rankings. The SEC tournament starts next Wednesday, 4-20, in Baton Rouge, so we really need a good day tomorrow and Sunday to get ready for the conference tourney.

Final Note

Fes Ezeli had four points, six boards and a block at the Golden State Warriors behind the almost other worldly Steph Curry and his 46 points defeated the Memphis Grizzlies, 125-104. The Warriors finished the season 73-9, and set the record for regular season victories in an NBA season eclipsing the Chicago Bulls’ 72 victories in 1996. Now, it’s onto the playoffs. Fes looks back after being injured for a while. It was his sixth game and he was active and outstanding. I see Fes playing a big role on the team in the postseason.

A lot of people are comparing the Warriors and those Bulls and, in an ESPN poll, gave the Bulls the edge if they had the home court advantage, the Warriors the edge if they had the home court advantage, and the Bulls the edge on a neutral court. They were and are both tremendous teams with outrageously good superstars in Michael and Steph. Would be interesting to have seen these two hook up in a championship series. Kind of fun to think about. I kind of agree with the poll. The Bulls with the  home court advantage and on a neutral court might have won, but the Warriors are as tough an out as you can get.
