Vanderbilt baseball with gigantic comeback, men’s tennis huge win over No.7 A&M, women’s tennis, men’s golf, basketball
Reynolds (above), Kendall (below) come up huge in major Dores’ comeback win over Missouri
Down 6-4 on the road in the top of the ninth and with two outs against a good Missouri pitcher, Tyler Campbell singled to right, Ro singled to left, both moved up on a wild pitch to third and second respectively, and the awesomely clutch Jeren Kendall singled Tyler and Ro home to tie the game at 6. Bryan Reynolds followed with a towering shot to center field for a two run blast and Ben Bowden closed the deal for us out of the pen, as we took a huge first game at Missouri 8-6, when Jordan Sheffield may not have had his best stuff starting for us. Jordan will be fine, he just struggles with his control some, but he has electric stuff. Freshman Evan Steele came in and gave us two innings of great relief work. The southpaw really brings it. He’s going to be awesome. He was tonight. We’ve got a young team this season, but they are extremely talented. Reynolds, Kendall, Will Toffey, Campbell, Ro, Jason Delay and Karl Ellison give us some veteran leadership, so this team does have some vets. This was a super comeback by our team that struggled a little last week, but looked like another outstanding Tim Corbin, coached team. Got Mizzou tomorrow at 5 PM CT/6PM ET on the SEC Network and then Sunday, at Noon CT/1 PM ET on the SEC Network. Also on SEC+ on the computer if you have the Elite Eight on the big screen. This is going to be a fun team to watch develop and keep getting better. Tonight was huge.
No pitchers announced yet for tomorrow or Sunday. I have a feeling Kyle Wright will pitch one of the games but not sure about the other. Kyle has usually been going on Sundays, but we’ll see what Corbs decides. Will let you know who we’re throwing before the game tomorrow. We are now 18-4 overall and 2-2 in the SEC and ranked fifth in the country by D1 baseball.com.
Addendum: Right hander Kyle Wright is on the mound for us tonight. Kyle is 4-0 with a 1.77 ERA. He has walked four and struck out 25. Great pitcher. Kyle will be opposed by Missouri right hander Tanner Houck, who is 2-2 with a 2.65 ERA. Tomorrow’s pitcher for us is to be determined. Mizzou will throw left hander Austin Tribby, who is 2-2, with a 4.40 ERA.
Men’s tennis with a tremendously gutsy victory over No.7 Texas A&M, 4-3, at home.Huge win from our No.1 player, Daniel Valent, who defeated No. 18 in the country, Arthur Rinderkneck, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4. Daniel is ranked #67 in the country. Our No.3 singles player, Cameron Klinger, clinched it with a gutsy 6-7, 6-4, 7-6 victory over No. 90 Jordi Arconada of A&M. Cameron is No.92 in the country. Baker Newman also won at No.4 singles and we won the doubles point. In tennis, it’s the order of finish in singles that determines the outcome. After we won the doubles’ point, Cameron was huge coming back from 4-3, 5-4 and 6-5 in the third set to clinch the match at No.3 . Awesome effort by the guys who moved to 12-8 on the season, but have now won three in a row SEC matches. We beat No.17 Kentucky a couple of weeks ago and Tennessee last week. We’re No.49 in the country now and we should move up this week in the ITA rankings (InterCollegiate Tennis Association).
Our No. 5 Women’s tennis team is in a huge tilt tomorrow at home at noon CT against the No.3 Georgia Bulldogs. The girls are coming off a 7-0 victory over Tennessee on Thursday. We are now 11-4 and 4-2 in the SEC and ranked fifth in the country by the ITA. Hope there’s a good crowd at the tennis courts to support the girls as they face a top flight opponent. Would be a tremendous victory if we can get it.
Just in: The No.5 girls beat No.3 Georgia, 4-3. More tomorrow
Men’s golf, coming off a sensational performance at the Schenkel Invitational, which we won beating teams like No.4 Auburn, No.10 Wake Forest and No.19 UNC among others, plays in the Farmlinks Collegiate Match Play against Alabama, Auburn and Georgia Tech, three top 25 teams, in Sylacauga, Alabama tomorrow at Farmlinks Golf Club. Freshman Will Gordon shot a 63 on the final day of the Schenkel played at Forest Heights Country Club in Statesboro, GA.Sophomore Theo Humphrey shot a 67 and freshman Patrick Martin shot 69. We shot -41 for the tournament, and -19 on the final day, last Sunday. We beat second place Wake by 10 shots as they shot -31. Super effort by the guys. Coach Scott Limbaugh likes this format we’re going to play in tomorrow as the postseason features a lot of match play, so this will be good for us.
Just in: Our No. 10 golf team defeated Ga. Tech this morning in match play at Farm Links Course in Sylacauga, Alabama, and are up this afternoon on No.4 Auburn 2-1 with three other matches all square. More on that tomorrow too. Now we lead Auburn in 3 matches we’re losing one and we’re all square in two. Will have final stuff tomorrow.
Brandt has reached the Sweet 16 of the WGC Dell Match Play . Brandt plays No.2 in the world Jason Day tomorrow. Brandt is No.15 in the world. Brandt plays Day at 8:03 AM CT/9:03 AM ET. Would be tremendous for Brandt to pull this off and get him really ready for Augusta National. Luke List is -4 after round two at the Puerto Rico Open. Luke is tied for 21st. Rafael Campos leads at -9.
Brandt lost 3&2 to Jason Day in the Sweet 16 of the Match Play today. Just couldn’t get anything going today.
Luke -5 through 3 rounds at the Puerto Rico Open, tied for 19th. Ian Poulter leads at -11, but Luke having a good tournament.
Luke and Jon Curran playing in the Shell Houston Open next week, the week before the Masters to see if they can win it and get it. Brandt taking next week off to prepare for Augusta National. I think B has a real shot.
Football spring game was played tonight. I’ve got to spend Sunday morning watching without any white noise before that and I will give a full report late Sunday afternoon on the game. This basketball Sweet 16 and our baseball team had me occupied tonight, but will definitely have a football write up Sunday, along with Women’s tennis, men’s golf, Brandt, Luke and, of course, baseball stuff. MLB season starts next weekend. Pedro hit a grand slam and a double last Sunday for the Orioles driving in five runs. Would love to see Pedro get a real chance with the Orioles. Mike Minor with the KC Royals, David, of course, with the BoSox, Sonny with the A’s and Ryan Flaherty with the O’s as well. We might see Tony Kemp, Carson Fulmer and/or Dansby up in the big leagues this season.
I think we’re done with Kevin Stallings and are about to start actively looking for a new head basketball coach. No official word from VU, but so many sources have reported that Stallings will not be back. After thinking about this today, this isn’t bad to be deliberate about our coaching search and even wait till Final Four weekend next weekend where every coach in the country will be. Mark Few, Ben Jacobson, they’ll all be there. I’m not totally against Will Wade of VCU, I just think we can do better.
