Sorry out of town so not as much detail. Picking Louis Oosthuizen this week. Like where his game is at. Excellent field with Spieth, patrick reed, Phil, jimmy walker, Brooks Koepka and many top flight players. Great tune up for Augusta National. The winner here is no guarantee to win next week, but it sure doesn’t hurt. Going with Louis. Your comments are more than welcome.

I thought we looked good on both sides of the ball. We’re loaded on defense. Need to stay healthy on the d line but Nifae and Adam are really good defensive tackles. I was impressed with Kyle, Stank and Wade. Deuce is learning but made some good plays. Really impressed with Khari Blasingame, Josh Crawford and Jair George at running back. We’ve got good depth at running back. Ralph didn’t play, but Ralph will be ready for South Carolina. Dallas Rivers didn’t play a lot either, but he’s had a good spring. Trent Sherfield had some nice catches. Like where Trent is. C.J,.Duncan had some good plays. C.J. looks back and will be a weapon. Caleb Scott did not play, but he’ll be key at wide out in the fall. Ronald Monroe looks like he’ll be an explosive playmaker for us on the perimeter. Darrius Sims is going to help us in the return game and I hope we can figure out ways to get him the ball on offense. O line looked fine. We had trouble with the snaps some, so that needs to be a point of emphasis. Defense looked solid. Emmanuel Smith had a strip and a return for a seven. It was a beautiful play by our nickel back. Our leaders on defense are Oren Burks, Zach Cunningham and Nigel Bowden. They are all three stellar. Zach’s a potential All-American and Oren is close. Nigel coming back from bad concussions last year, but he’s going to be outstanding. Coach Mason gave just four looks on defense, so there are a lot of schemes  that we will have ready for South Carolina. I think this spring game was more about our offense. We’re going to have a stellar defense, we just need to be outstanding on offense as well. We’ve got potential for that.

Concerns are staying healthy on the defensive line, but the guys we have are good, and really we have nine or 10 guys up front so we’re good there overall. O line needs to improve over the summer. Quarterback needs to get better, but Kyle looks like he can be a terrific quarterback and Wade and Stank look more than capable. Tight ends need to have a good year for us. DeAndre Woods didn’t play and he’ll be welcomed back with open arms. DeAndre was awesome last year until he got hurt, so he’ll be huge there. Nathan Marcus, Jared Pinkney and Sam Dobbs need to step up their play in the offseason and in fall camp.

I like the potential of this team. I really like our new young coaches and the vets we have working with them. Coach Ludwig is of course offensive coordinator and coaching tight ends, so that’ll be huge for our tight ends’ development. Coach Gerry Gdowski will coach the quarterbacks and be our recruiting coordinator. Really love the addition of Chris Marve at linebackers. He’ll be super. Like Cameron Norcross with the o line. He’ll do some great things. Coach Mason is superb with the defense and with the decision making overall. Love Coach Ludwig. Coach Jeff Genyk has really done a full overhaul of our special teams and he’ll coach our running backs. Like what Genyk is doing. Cortez Hankton moves into his second year with the receivers and our receivers looked good all except for a drop by Pinkney, but he’s a tight end. Coach Ah You and Coach Osia Lewis look like good additions to the defense and Coach Mattioli is back with the secondary where he’ll work with Coach Mason, who loves the secondary and is a master with it. I love the recruiting ability of this staff, too.

We had some guys who didn’t participate who will be there for fall camp. Andrew Jelks will be back at left tackle, DeAndre will be back at tight end and Ralph and Dallas at running back.

Jay Cutler was inducted into the Vanderbilt Athletics Hall of Fame at halftime. It was a nice tribute to Jay and Jay did a great job in his acceptance speech and with Laura Rutledge of the SEC Network when she interviewed him. Jay is a class act. He’s really come into his own as a person. He’s always been a tremendous player and has gotten a bad rap through the years. Hopeful this could be a big year for Jay and the Bears in 2016.

Like the potential of this team. Now time to get in the weight room with Coach Dobson and get ready for the fall drills. South Carolina, Thursday, Sept 1. The game will either be at 5 PM CT/6 PM ET on ESPN or the SEC Network or 8:15 PM CT/9:15 PM ET on either one of those networks. As soon as I know I’ll let you know. Let’s make Will Muschamp’s first game as South Carolina coach an unpleasant one.

No. 5 baseball won 17-7 over Missouri to sweep the Tigers with some stellar play over the weekend. Bryan Reynolds was huge. He hit three homers over the weekend. Bryan’s superb. Ro hitting it very well. Seventeen runs, 17 hits today. We are now 20-4 overall and 4-2 in the SEC. Huge week with Belmont Tuesday and South Carolina in a weekend series, Thursday through Saturday. Will be gigantic. SC is 23-2 and 6-0 in SEC. But Belmont, a backyard rival, is first. Still figuring out our weekend rotation. Think I like Jordan Sheffield on Fridays but still evolving on that. Liked what Kyle Wright did last night and loved Mark Ruppenthal out of the bullpen last night. He’s tremendous. Hayden was OK today starting, but had control issues. Ryan Johnson did well for a while out of the pen, but struggled late. Weekend rotation is a  fluid situation right now. Committed two errors today, but we hit it so well, it wasn’t as big of a deal, though you need to be good on defense always.  Will have some things to work on this week for Belmont and Gamecocks. Tomorrow will be an important practice day.

MLB cranking up, so it’ll be exciting to watch DP on opening day, most likely Sonny, too. Sonny is scheduled to start against the White Sox at home a week from tomorrow, Monday, April 4th, and while the Red Sox haven’t announced their opening day starter Monday, April 4th at Cleveland, I’m hopeful it’ll be David. Mike Minor for the Royals, and Pedro and Ryan Flaherty of the Orioles will get cranking, too. Not sure where Mike stands with his injured shoulder/labrum, so will keep an eye on that. MLB season starts a week from today.

No. 49 Men’s tennis lost today to No.48 LSU, 5-2, but have been playing well lately. Next up at No. 16 Florida on Friday. Men are 12-9 overall and 3-3 in conference. Beat No.7 Texas A&M on Friday, 4-3, which was huge. We should move up in the ITA rankings.

No. 10 Men’s golf with a huge victory at the Match Play at Farmlinks Golf Club in Sylacauga, Alabama. Beat No.4 Auburn in the finals. Could very well move up in Golfstat rankings. Next week Mason Rudolph tournament at Legacy Course at home. Luke List finished tied 15th at the Puerto Rico Open shooting -7. The winner was Tony Finau who won in a playoff over Steve Marion and shot -12, so Luke with an excellent tournament. Luke and JC will play at the Shell Houston Open next weekend to see if they can win and get into the Masters the following week. Brandt gearing up for Augusta National. He lost his Sweet 16 match in the Match Play to Jason Day, who won the event today. He looked unstoppable. Brandt will be a factor at Augusta National though. He’s having a good year.

No.5 Women’s tennis is shaping into form after the huge victory over No.3 Georgia yesterday. Women’s tennis now ranked fifth in the country and could very well move up this week in the ITA rankings. We are now 12-4 overall and 5-2 in the SEC. Next up at No.27 Mississippi State on Thursday, 3-31, then at No. 39 Ole Miss on Saturday.

Vice Chancellor and AD David Williams gave Kevin Stallings a nice farewell in a statement and said there will be a national search for a coach immediately. I’ve thrown out some names. This will be interesting and exciting.

John Jenkins is now starting for the Phoenix Suns and playing very well., He was 3-of-3 Friday Night from trifecta and had four rebounds. The Suns aren’t that great, but John is making his mark. Fes should be back soon from his knee injury and the Warriors will welcome him back with open arms. Looks like Wade and Damian are leaning towards going out for the NBA draft. If they do, just want the best for them and they’ll be fun to follow. Not a totally done deal though, so will keep you posted on that. Our new coach will have a talented roster next year regardless.

Will have more later in the week.

Vanderbilt baseball with gigantic comeback, men’s tennis huge win over No.7 A&M, women’s tennis, men’s golf, basketball

Reynolds (above), Kendall (below) come up huge in major Dores' comeback win over Missouri

Reynolds (above), Kendall (below) come up huge in major Dores’ comeback win over Missouri

Down 6-4 on the road  in the top of the ninth and with two outs against a good Missouri pitcher, Tyler Campbell singled to right, Ro singled to left, both moved up on a wild pitch to third and second respectively, and the awesomely clutch Jeren Kendall singled Tyler and Ro home to tie the game at 6. Bryan Reynolds followed with a towering shot to center field for a two run blast and Ben Bowden closed the deal for us out of the pen, as we took a huge first game at Missouri 8-6, when Jordan Sheffield may not have had his best stuff starting for us. Jordan will be fine, he just struggles with his control some, but he has electric stuff. Freshman Evan Steele came in and gave us two innings of great relief work. The southpaw really brings it. He’s going to be awesome. He was tonight. We’ve got a young team this season, but they are extremely talented. Reynolds, Kendall, Will Toffey, Campbell, Ro, Jason Delay and Karl Ellison give us some veteran leadership, so this team does have some vets. This was a super comeback by our team that struggled a little last week, but looked like another outstanding Tim Corbin, coached team. Got Mizzou tomorrow at 5 PM CT/6PM ET on the SEC Network and then Sunday, at Noon CT/1 PM ET on the SEC Network. Also on SEC+ on the computer if you have the Elite Eight on the big screen. This is going to be a fun team to watch develop and keep getting better. Tonight was huge.

No pitchers announced yet for tomorrow or Sunday. I have a feeling Kyle Wright will pitch one of the games but not sure about the other. Kyle has usually been going on Sundays, but we’ll see what Corbs decides. Will let you know who we’re throwing before the game tomorrow. We are now 18-4 overall and 2-2 in the SEC and ranked fifth in the country by D1 baseball.com.

Addendum: Right hander Kyle Wright is on the mound for us tonight. Kyle is 4-0 with a 1.77 ERA. He has walked four and struck out 25. Great pitcher. Kyle will be opposed by Missouri right hander Tanner Houck, who is 2-2 with a 2.65 ERA. Tomorrow’s pitcher for us is to be determined. Mizzou will throw left hander Austin Tribby, who is 2-2, with a 4.40 ERA.

Men’s tennis with a tremendously gutsy victory over No.7 Texas A&M, 4-3, at home.Huge win from our No.1 player, Daniel Valent, who defeated No. 18 in the country, Arthur Rinderkneck, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4. Daniel is ranked #67 in the country. Our No.3 singles player, Cameron Klinger, clinched it with a gutsy 6-7, 6-4, 7-6 victory over No. 90 Jordi Arconada of A&M. Cameron is No.92 in the country. Baker Newman also won at No.4 singles and we won the doubles point. In tennis, it’s the order of finish in singles that determines the outcome. After we won the doubles’ point, Cameron was huge coming back from 4-3, 5-4 and 6-5 in the third set to clinch the match at No.3 . Awesome effort by the guys who moved to 12-8 on the season, but have now won three in a row SEC matches. We beat No.17 Kentucky a couple of weeks ago and Tennessee last week. We’re No.49 in the country now and we should move up this week in the ITA rankings (InterCollegiate Tennis Association).

Our No. 5 Women’s tennis team is in a huge tilt tomorrow at home at noon CT against the No.3 Georgia Bulldogs. The girls are coming off a 7-0 victory over Tennessee on Thursday. We are now 11-4 and 4-2 in the SEC and ranked fifth in the country by the ITA. Hope there’s a good crowd at the tennis courts to support the girls as they face a top flight opponent. Would be a tremendous victory if we can get it.

Just in: The No.5 girls beat No.3 Georgia, 4-3. More tomorrow

Men’s golf, coming off a sensational performance at the Schenkel Invitational, which we won beating teams like No.4 Auburn, No.10 Wake Forest and No.19 UNC among others, plays in the Farmlinks Collegiate Match Play against Alabama, Auburn and Georgia Tech, three top 25 teams, in Sylacauga, Alabama tomorrow at Farmlinks Golf Club. Freshman Will Gordon shot a 63 on the final day of the Schenkel played at Forest Heights Country Club in Statesboro, GA.Sophomore Theo Humphrey shot a 67 and freshman Patrick Martin shot 69. We shot -41 for the tournament, and -19 on the final day, last Sunday. We beat second place Wake by 10 shots as they shot -31. Super effort by the guys. Coach Scott Limbaugh likes this format we’re going to play in tomorrow as the postseason features a lot of match play, so this will be good for us.

Just in: Our No. 10 golf team defeated Ga. Tech this morning in match play at Farm Links Course in Sylacauga, Alabama, and are up this afternoon on No.4 Auburn 2-1 with three other matches all square. More on that tomorrow too. Now we lead Auburn in 3 matches we’re losing one and we’re all square in two. Will have final stuff tomorrow.

Brandt has reached the Sweet 16 of the WGC Dell Match Play . Brandt plays No.2 in the world Jason Day tomorrow. Brandt is No.15 in the world. Brandt plays Day at 8:03 AM CT/9:03 AM ET. Would be tremendous for Brandt to pull this off and get him really ready for Augusta National. Luke List is -4 after round two at the Puerto Rico Open. Luke is tied for 21st. Rafael Campos leads at -9.

Brandt lost 3&2 to Jason Day in the Sweet 16 of the Match Play today. Just couldn’t get anything going today.

Luke -5 through 3 rounds at the Puerto Rico Open, tied for 19th. Ian Poulter leads at -11, but Luke having a good tournament.

Luke and Jon Curran playing in the Shell Houston Open next week, the week before the Masters to see if they can win it and get it. Brandt taking next week off to prepare for Augusta National. I think B has a real shot.

Football spring game was played tonight. I’ve got to spend Sunday morning watching without any white noise before that and I will give a full report late Sunday afternoon on the game. This basketball Sweet 16 and our baseball team had me occupied tonight, but will definitely have a football write up Sunday, along with Women’s tennis, men’s golf, Brandt, Luke  and, of course, baseball stuff. MLB season starts next weekend. Pedro hit a grand slam and a double last Sunday for the Orioles driving in five runs. Would love to see Pedro get a real chance with the Orioles. Mike Minor with the KC Royals, David, of course, with the BoSox, Sonny with the A’s and Ryan Flaherty with the O’s as well. We might see Tony Kemp, Carson Fulmer and/or Dansby up in the big leagues this season.

I think we’re done with Kevin Stallings and are about to start actively looking for a new head basketball coach. No official word from VU, but so many sources have reported that Stallings will not be back. After thinking about this today, this isn’t bad to be deliberate about our coaching search and even wait till Final Four weekend next weekend where every coach in the country will be. Mark Few, Ben Jacobson, they’ll all be there. I’m not totally against Will Wade of VCU, I just think we can do better.

Arnie Invitational on Tour this week

The Arnold Palmer Invitational

Bay Hill Club and Lodge Course, 7,419 yards, Par 72

Designer: Dick Wilson, 1961. Arnie bought it in the late 1960’s

Defending champion: Matt Every, two time defending champion, won it in 2014 and 2015. Every won last year with an 18 foot birdie putt on the legendary 18th, and shot 66, waiting it out as Henrik Stenson, who came into the final round with a two shot lead, but three putted 16 and 17, missed a 16 foot birdie putt on 18 that would have sent the tournament into a playoff.

White’s World’s pick last week: Patrick Reed. Reed tied for seventh at the Valspar Championship in Tampa, as Charl Schwartzel, the 31 year old South African who won the Masters in 2011, won it in a playoff over Bill Haas.

Best finish for White’s World this season: Reed, second at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions in Hawaii, Spieth won it.

Two of my readers have made correct predictions this season. Bama golf correctly predicted Hideki Matsuyama to win the Waste Management Open in early February which Hideki did. Two weeks ago, Spike picked Adam Scott to win the WGC-Cadillac Championship at Doral and he did. Good job by Bama and Spike. Hopefully, they’ll predict again this week. They’re both  good at it. I’ll link a 25 second video below on how to comment on this blog. It’s a little different from the old site, but the short video makes it very easy to understand. Your comments are encouraged and more than welcome here.

Key tee times tomorrow at Bay Hill:

7:11 AM CT/8:11 AM ET: Adam Scott, Henrik Stenson, Brandt Snedeker

11:56 AM CT/12:56 PM ET: Jason Day, Zach Johnson, Hideki Matsuyama

12:08 PM CT/1::08 PM ET: Rory, Matt Every, Kevin Kisner

TV: Tomorrow-Friday: Golf Channel: 1-5 PM CT/2-6 PM ET; Saturday-Sunday: Golf Channel: 11:30 AM-1:30 PM CT/12:30 PM-2:30 PM ET; NBC: 1:30-5 PM CT/2:30-6 PM ET.

Weather: Thursday: 86 high, 40% chance of t storms, wind, WSW 7-13 MPH; Friday: 82 high, 40% t-storm chance, wind SSE 8-14; Saturday: High 80, 40% chance t-storms, wind SE 7-10 MPH; Sunday,  76, Partly sunny, stray shower, 30% chance, wind W 12-16 MPH. Wind will be a factor on Sunday when the pressure is really on.

There were two double eagles in last year’s Arnie. Daniel Berger double eagled the par five 6th hole from 237 yards out using a 4 iron, and Zach Johnson double eagled the par 5 16th from 207 yards out using a five iron.

Arnie won seven majors and recorded 62 PGA victories. Arnie won the Masters in 1958, 1960, 1962, and 1964, the U.S. Open in 1960, The Open Championship in 1961 and 1962, and tied for second at the PGA in 1964, 1968 and 1970. Quite a career for the King. He will not be hitting the ceremonial opening tee shot at the Masters this year as he’s done with Jack and Gary Player since 2007. Arnie is 86 and he’s just a little tired right now. He’s done so much for golf, for his community and the country for that matter, and needs a break. He’s competitive still and is probably eyeing 2017 to see if he can tee it up at Augusta National with Jack and Gary then.

Key holes:

No. 16, Par 5, 511 yards

The beginning of a three hole stretch that is one of the best in golf. A sure birdie opportunity and a legitimate eagle possibility, but the drive is tight with trees and rough on the right off the tee and water on the left. There is a ton of water at Bay Hill. A narrow, but long green that’s guarded by water on the left and sand on the right. Pretty tight landing area for the player’s approach, usually his second shot.

No. 17, Par 3, 221 yards

Another good opportunity to gain ground or implode on Sunday. It’s a long tee shot from an elevated tee to a green that’s surrounded by water on three sides with bunkers protecting the right side of the green from the tee box. The green is small by Bay Hill’s standards, and birdieable, but can lead to three putt bogeys. If the player hits it in the gigantic sand trap in front of the green, he’d do well to get up and down and not bogey the hole. Pressure packed hole on Sunday.

No. 18, Par 4, 458 yards

The hole looks pretty straightforward on the scorecard, but it’s anything but straightforward. It’s a pretty wide fairway off the tee, so that’s doable, but the second shot has a high degree of difficulty. The large green is fronted by rocks and water, requiring a longer carry to the right half where the pin is tucked in on Sundays. The bunkers on the left side are there for errant pull hooks when the pressure on. A lot of dramatic birdies have been recorded here, several by Tiger, as he’s won here eight times, and Every has created some fireworks the last two years, especially last year with his 18 footer, which was straight down the line, and he hit it in center cut, City Hall. The 32 year old Daytona Beach, Florida native is certainly in the hunt this year.

Prediction:

I’m going with the 40 year old from Iowa City, Iowa to get it done. He’s won 12 times on tour and won the Open Championship last year at St. Andrews and the Masters in 2007. The prediction this week is:

Zach Johnson

Like Zach to win tour victory 13 at the Arnie

Like Zach to win tour victory 13 at the Arnie

Need big nights from key guys tonight, baseball matriculating very well, women’s tennis, men’s golf

Need a big night from two of our horses, Damian (above), and Wade (below).

Need a big night from two of our horses, Damian (above), and Wade (below).

Got the Shockers of Wichita State tonight in the second game of the First Four in Dayton, Ohio at UD Arena. Tip off is set for 8:10 PM CT/9:10 PM ET and will be televised by TruTV, part of the Turner Network of stations. On Directv, TruTV is on channel 246, on Charter HD Cable, it’s on channel 772, on Dish Network, it’s on Channel 204, and on Comcast it’s 841, I believe, not positive on Comcast, but I know it does air on Comcast. The other station listings are accurate.

The Shockers finished their season at 24-8, losing to a really good Northern Iowa team in the semifinals of the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament, 57-52. Northern Iowa is a very good team that won the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament, though Wichita State won the regular season title, and I picked Northern Iowa to defeat Texas in their first round matchup Friday night in my bracket. Northern Iowa actually beat North Carolina, 71-67, at home in November, so they’re for real and losing to them is nothing to get down about, that’s for sure. Northern Iowa finished their season 22-12, and 11-7 in the conference. The Shockers were 16-2 in the conference with losses to Illinois State on the road, 58-53, which is coached by former Commodore assistant Dan Muller, and Northern Iowa at home, 53-50. The Shockers don’t have any major wins and have losses also to Alabama, 64-60, in a tournament in Orlando in late November, Tulsa, another tournament team, 77-67 at Tulsa,  and Iowa, a very solid Big Ten team in the tournament, at Orlando in November, 84-61.

They did go to the Final Four three years ago in 2013, and have a two or three players from that team, one of whom is Ron Baker, a redshirt senior 6’4″, 210 guard, who averages 14.2 ppg. He shoots 36% from three, 59-of-155, which is a little lower percentage than he has been shooting the past couple of years. But he’s always been a big time player for them. Their point guard, Fred VanVleet, is 6 feet, 186, and averages 12 points per game and 5.7 assists per game. He’s outstanding. He doesn’t take a ton of threes, but he’s a 41% three point shooter, 40-of-97. Both are good free throw shooters, Baker shooting it at 79% and VanVleet at 82%. The Shockers defend well, giving up only 59 points per game, and they average 73 points per game themselves. They average 37.5 rebounds per game, and we average 38.6. We give up 67 points per game, so we are going to HAVE to defend well and hit the glass hard.

Wade Baldwin averages 14.2 points per game and 5.2 assists per game. We need a really good night from Wade. We average about 12 turnovers per game, and we really need to keep that down under 10 and even in the 6-7 range. Damian is averaging 14.2 ppg and 6.9 rbg. He also has 52 blocks this season. Luke is averaging 9 points, but pulls down 7.2 rebounds per game and has 82 blocks on the season. We need that kind of intimidating presence in the paint from Damian and Luke. And we need them to score. Luke needs to give us 10-12 points and eight or 10 boards with some swats to go along with those other skills, and Damian needs to give us 16-18 points and 8-10 boards. MFD and Jeff need to do what they do, which is shoot it well, play solid D, and just make their typical hustle plays. Need six or seven threes from those two combined. Riley, Josh, Nolan, Joe, Cam and even Samir, if Kevin needs him, need to really be impactful when they’re on the floor.

But we really need to defend and board from the opening tip. We usually shoot it well, though we didn’t against UT in the first half last Thursday and that cost us along with Tennessee sinking every shot they put up.

We’ve just got to be ready to play at the start of the game and have a sense of urgency right away. This is it for us. It’s win or go home. We don’t want to go home.

Prediction

Wade and Damian play well, along with the other three in our starting five, and Riley and the bench give us good minutes, and our defense gets the job done because we’ll have to defend. Like our guys to move on tonight and play Arizona Thursday Night at 8:20 CT/9:20 ET in Providence, Rhode Island on TNT in the South Regional. But this is all we need to worry about, this game, tonight.

VU 66, Wichita State 62

Baseball swept Xavier last weekend. We are now 15-1 and ranked No.2 in the country by D1baseball.com, the preeminent authority on college baseball. We have Northern Illinois today at 6:30 PM CT/7:30 PM ET on SEC Network+ on the computer, and Mississippi State will come into the Hawk this weekend for games Friday through Sunday. Friday’s game is at 7 PM CT/8 PM ET on the SEC Network, and Saturday’s game is at 7:30 PM CT/8:30 PM ET on the SEC Network. Sunday’s game is at 1 PM CT/2 PM ET on SEC Network+. Will have much  more on baseball coming up this week for sure, along with women’s tennis, which has been struggling a little lately with two losses on the road last week in SEC play against South Carolina and Florida, two outstanding teams, but will right the ship very soon, starting with a home match Thursday at 4 PM CT/5 PM ET against a good A&M  team. The match will be broadcast by SEC Network+. Then we have a home match Saturday at noon CT/ 1 PM ET versus a good LSU team, they’re all good in this conference, which will not be televised, but I’ll have a report on it. The girls are 8-4 and ranked seventh in the country by the ITA, the International Tennis Association. Feel very confident Geoff and the girls will get it going, starting Thursday. I’ll also talk some golf, too. Men have a match this weekend at the Schenkel Invitational at Statesboro, Georgia on Friday.

Also, football information that comes up, will be posted here. Spring game is Friday, March 25th, at 6 PM CT/7 PM ET, in the stadium and will be televised on the SEC Network.

Will have a full report tomorrow on tonight’s game and a recap of baseball from today and what’s going on with the baseball team. It’s going well. Hopefully, our bball team gets it done tonight in Dayton.

Bracketology 2016

After months of research, meditation, long walks in the woods and confessions to my minister, here is my bracket for 2016. Should be an epic tournament. The Michigan at the bottom of the Midwest bracket, the No.2 seed in the Midwest Region, is Michigan State. Like that Izzo.

Last year I finished 548,691 out of 10,933,820 entrants in the ESPN bracket challenge, which was in the 95th percentile group. I had Duke, Kentucky, Michigan State and Arizona in the Final Four with Duke winning. Had three of my Final Four teams right with Duke, Michigan State and Kentucky, but Wisconsin played Kentucky instead of Arizona. Duke beat Michigan State, Wisconsin beat Kentucky and Duke beat Wisconsin in the championship game for the Blue Devils’ and my W’s. Hopefully this year can be as good or better. Enjoy the tourney.

If you want to post your own comments on this bracket blog, here is the video on how to post it. Bracket below this video link to comment on blog.

Bracket 2016

Preview, prediction for the Valspar Championship

The Valspar Championship

Innisbrook Resort, Tampa, Cooperhead Course, 7,340 yards, par 71

Designer: Larry Packard, 1972

Fairways: Champion Bermuda

Greens: Tift Eagle Bermuda

Defending champion: Jordan Spieth: part of five wins on tour in 2015, including the Masters and the U.S. Open, and the Tour Championship to win the FedEx Cup; Player of the year.

Spieth’s winning score: 274, -10; defeated Patrick Reed and Sean O’Hair on the third hole of the playoff with a 27 foot birdie putt on number 17.

Featured groups today:

6:56 AM CT/7:56 ET: Graeme McDowell, Patrick Reed and Hunter Mahan. McDowell has already won at the OHL Classic in Mayakoba, Mexico this year, Reed had a solo second to Spieth at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions in Hawaii and had four top 10’s this year, and Mahan is making his first start in Florida.

7:07 AM CT/8:07 AM ET: Spieth, Henrik, Bill Haas. Spieth has all the credentials from last year and a victory at the Hyundai already on this year’s resume, Stenson finished one stroke out of a playoff here last year, and Haas, a six time tour champ, has two top 10 finishes this season.

11:46 AM CT/12:46 PM ET: Justin Thomas, Russell Knox, Jason Dufner. All three have already won this season. Thomas picked up his first victory at the CIMB Classic in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in late October-early November of 2015, Knox won the World Golf Championships-HBSC Champions in China the next week in early November, and Duf won the Career Builder Challenge in La Quinta, California in January.

11:57 AM CT/12:57 PM ET: Matt Kuchar, Louis Oosthuizen, Ernie Els. Kuchar, a seven time winner on tour, posted his best finish three weeks ago at the Northern Trust finishing tied for eighth, Louis finished tied 14th at the WGC-Cadillac last week, and Ernie is in his fourth event of the season. He lost a heartbreaker in 2012 at the Valspar missing some crucial putts at the end, but came back to win the Open Championship at Royal Lytham & St. Annes for his fourth major championship. Ernie has won 19 times on the PGA Tour.

Key holes:

No.8 235 yards, par 3

Tough par three that requires a long tee shot to a long narrow green with trouble on each side. Par is a very good score here. The Par 3’s are long on this course.

No. 14, 590 yards, par 5

A three shot hole for a lot of players though the bombers, with a scorched tee shot, might reach in two. Long narrow green again. Sand on the front left and trouble behind the green with thick rough. Possible birdie hole, though an error could lead to a bogey.

“The snakepit”

The final three holes of the course, one of the most famous or infamous stretches, depends on who you ask, on tour.

No.16, 460 yards, Par 4

This hole stresses a premium on accuracy off the tee. It’s tough. There is water running along the entire right side and trees and tough rough and solid ground on the left. In the second playoff hole last year, Reed almost holed out from behind the green with a beautiful chip shot, and O’Hair missed an 11 foot birdie putt that would have won the tournament. The putt looked good from  two feet away, but just lipped out on the right side. It was a heartbreaker for the 2008 champion who was trying to reignite his career. He has now.

No.17, 215 yards par 3

Tough tee shot to a wide green with a trap on the front right side and thick rough on the right. Spieth put on a clinic of getting up and down in regulation when he looked like he had an impossible chip from the thick rough on the right. He flopped the ball to about four feet and sank the putt. It was an incredible effort and kept him tied for the lead Reed and O”Hair @ -10.

No.18, 445 yards, par 4

A blind tee shot with rough and trees on the right, a lot of trouble, and rough, sand and trees on the left. Driving the ball is at a premium on this hole. Spieth hit his tee shot in the sand, hit it fat and was  short of the green by about 50 yards. He flopped his third shot to 12 feet above the hole and sank a hugely clutch putt in regulation to earn a spot in the playoff with Reed and O’Hair, which he won on the third playoff hole.

Prediction

I was struggling with three guys. It’s hard to go wrong picking the defending champion, the gunslinger from Dallas, the 22 year old Spieth, who can win any week. Scrambling is such a huge part of this course and he does it better than anybody on tour, and sure did it last year here. Twenty two year old Justin Thomas has already won here, and the young gun from Kentucky via the University of Alabama has a massive future ahead of him. He drives it terrifically and can putt with the best of them when he’s on.

But I’m going with the 25 year old from San Antonio, Texas, who is already having a solid year, and gave Jordan everything he wanted last year. He’s quite a scrambler and I can’t wait to see him and Spieth play together in the Ryder Cup. They’ll give the Euros everything they want and more at Hazeltine National Golf Course in Chaska, Minnesota. I see him just barely getting the best of Spieth and Thomas this week.

Patrick Reed

Tough loss Saturday at College Station, but still in good shape if we win in SEC Tourney; baseball cookin’, women’s tennis, men’s golf

Roberson and company need to be clutch in the tourney and going forward after that

Roberson and company need to be clutch in the tourney and going forward after that

Not a good way to end the season with a 76-67 loss to A&M on the road. Really had high hopes going in thinking we could beat A&M and gain a two seed in the SEC tourney, and get a double bye, and not have to play until Friday. Not much to talk about from the A&M game. Damian fouled out again. Some calls were questionable on him, without a doubt, but he HAS to stay in the game for us. I’d like to see us use our bench more. Nolan Cressler, Joe Toye, and even Samir Sehic are quality players. We played Cam Justice, who sank a couple of triples, Can is a stud, and Riley did an excellent job off the bench. He sank a couple of trifectas which was awesome to see. Riley shooting well could be a huge pick me up for this team. He is an important player for us. Wade played well. Wade finished with  11 points, eight assists only two turnovers, and Damian got it going a little before fouling out. We did sink 11-of-11 free throws. Wade was 6-of-6 and Damian was 3-of-3, which is awesome to see.

We’ve just got to regroup this week and get ready for the Auburn-UT winner. Our first game will be Thursday at 2 PM CT/3 PM ET on the SEC Network. Even though we got a fifth seed in the tournament, our seeding is pretty favorable. If we beat the AU-UT winner, which I’m going with Auburn in that one because I like Pearl over Rick Barnes, we would play LSU in the quarters on Friday at 2 PM CT/3 PM ET or 25 minutes after the first game on the SEC Network, and if we beat Ben Simmons and company, we’d play Saturday at noon CT/1 PM ET on ESPN versus most likely A&M. If we beat A&M, we’d be in the finals versus most likely Kentucky @ noon CT/1 PM ET on ESPN. So we’ve got a shot.

“Brackets” has us as a #9 seed right now in the NCAA’s playing #8 USC in the first round with the winner playing Virginia, which will play the 16th seed, so that’s a guaranteed W for UVA. It’s always subject to change. Brackets does an outstanding job of predicting the tournament, but this thing is fluid. The conference tournaments could change things. Brackets has Kansas, North Carolina, Nova and UVA as one seeds, but Michigan State, if they win the Big Ten conference tourney and one of the four fall early in their respective conference tourneys, could move into a one seed. It’s really an exciting time in sports. This tournament is a total spectacle, it’s electric to watch. Will have my bracket on my regular blog next Monday or Tuesday. There will be a lot of meditation and emails with my minister to try to figure the NCAA tourney out. The meditation worked last year as I picked Duke to win it all and they did. My minister is in his first year, so I will use that resource this year. He’s a great man, and loves football and sports in general. He dogs me when I miss a pick, particularly if it’s against his Pittsburgh Steelers, which I did in the playoffs against Cincy, in which the Bengals imploded with the likes of running back Jeremy Hill fumbling late in the game with it seemingly locked up, linebacker Vontaze Burfict, with a personal foul to give the Steelers great field position, and Pacman Jones, with an unsportsmanlike that sealed the Steelers kicking a game winning field goal to win by two, just handing the game to the Steelers on a silver platter. Dr Carl let me have it the next day. But I’ll use him as a resource this year. I’ll use any resource available to get this right. So deep meditation and conferences with Dr Carl by email are definitely on the docket.

We’ve got to get back to the way we were playing against Florida and Kentucky. Those were awesome games. Jeff Roberson has been terrific for us all season. I love Jeff. He’s such a heart, team player, and he’s highly skilled and he and Wade bring very good toughness to the team. Damian and Luke really need to dig in, in the middle, MFD needs to be MFD and shoot the lights out of Bridgestone Arena in Nashville. If Riley can get it going also, that would be huge. We’ll be at home, though not at Memorial, but we’ll have our own rooms and beds to sleep in, which is another bonus. The Big Blue Nation will be out in full force, like they always are, but we really need our fans to show up. If we can win this thing, it would be huge for this basketball team. We won it in 2012, but for some reason, this year seems more important. Getting to the finals would be good, but winning it would give this team a highly positive mental boost going into the big tournament. Can we get it done? Yes, absolutely, if we play to our capacity. We have a ton of talent, and we’ve shown we can beat a Florida team by 14 on the road recently in a very tough environment, and also beat a Kentucky team that is star-studded and is a definite Final Four contender. We’ve got that potential, in my opinion, if we can really dig in on defense and the boards and make our open looks from three and Damian, Luke and Josh can also score in the middle, particularly Damian. We need great shooting from MFD, Riley, Wade and Jeff. Jeff can take it to the glass and score. We need that from him. He’s been outstanding this year for us, I’d call him our most valuable player. Jeff’s an unsung, lunch pale, blue collar player for us, who makes a lot of winning plays. We need that from him at Bridgestone. Wade needs to take care of the ball and be Wade, playing with the toughness he always brings and scoring at the rim, getting us in fast break opportunities and shooting well from distance and mid range. All those things need to happen for us to win this thing and advance to the NCAA’s with a ton of momentum. Will we win this? If those things all happen, we will. It’s crunch time for our basketball team. Everybody needs to step up their game. It’s March.

Baseball

Our baseball team, ranked second in the country by D-1 baseball, took two of three from Stanford at Palo Alto over the weekend. We had some weather issues out there, but got great pitching and timely hitting in a 5-2 victory over the Cardinal to clinch the series yesterday. We moved to 10-1 overall with the victory. Catcher Jason Delay was 2-for-3 with a couple of Ribeyes, including a run producing RBI double. Freshman second baseman Alonzo Jones was 2-for-4. Third baseman Will Toffey had a two-run double as well. We got excellent pitching from starter Kyle Wright, who went five, giving up four hits, two earned, with no walks and four K’s. Ryan Johnson, Collin Snider, who I’m looking at as an important piece on our pitching staffing this season, maybe a weekend starter, Matt Ruppenthal all pitched well in relief and Hayden Stone finished it off for the save. Hayden is back a lot earlier than anticipated, and I watched him in the ninth against the Cardinal yesterday on the Pac-12 Network and he looked very good. He was throwing it 91 with his heat, and his breaking ball was sharp. He looked like Hayden Stone from two years ago. That’s an excellent sign if we can get Hayden back into that closer role, because he is clutch. We played a doubleheader Thursday and lost the first game, 4-1, but won the second, 4-1. Ben Bowden got the victory in the second game, going five, allowing two hits and one run, which was unearned, with one walk and four K’s. Ben is very much in the weekend rotation plans if he keeps this up. Hayden picked up his first save in that game. We lost the first game. Jordan Sheffield gave up nine hits and two earned in five innings, but didn’t walk anybody and struck out six. Just need to hone Jordan up a little more as we get closer to conference play. Jordan is still pitching very well with a 2-1 record and a 1.59 ERA with just four walks and 24 K’s. He brings it high 90’s, which is terrific. He’s got all the tools. He just needs to fine tune it a little bit heading into SEC play. Jordan could very well be our Friday night guy. Right fielder Jeren Kendall is still leading the team in hitting at .442 with three homers and 16 Ribbies. Center fielder Bryan Reynolds is hitting .385 with two homers and 11 RBIs, and Alonzo is hitting .351 with a homer and 14 Ribbies. Will Toffey is only hitting .250 right now, but Will should get it going soon. He’s too good a hitter to not get it going. He plays outstanding third base, too. We’re great at catcher with Delay and Karl Ellison. Both are experienced juniors, who know how to handle our pitchers, and both can hit, particularly Delay. Jason is an awesome hitter. Our fielding is outstanding. We are fielding at a .983 percentage, which is superb. Our opponents are at .945. We have only committed seven errors in 11 games, and 411 chances. Love the way we defend. That’s so crucial along with the pitching and hitting.

We play Radford tomorrow, the start of a two game set with a team from south central Virginia that was good last year. They’re 2-9 this season, but they finished 45-16 last year, and we ended up beating them in our regional final, on our way to our second consecutive CWS, where we finished runner up, after winning it the year before. It was our third appearance in the College World Series. We also went to Omaha in 2011. After two games with Radford, tomorrow and Wednesday, we’ll host Xavier for a weekend series, then Northern Illinois? Are you kiddin me? comes in to play us next Wednesday, 3-15. Then we start SEC play with State coming into town, Friday-Sunday, March 18th-20th. More on those games later. Should be a heckuva season. We’ve got an outstanding team. Just need  to get some more hitting from Toffey and some of our better hitters, and solidify our pitching. The SEC is loaded. Florida is No.1 in the country, and LSU, A&M and all of the rest of the teams are tough. It’s a war in the SEC, very similar to football. But we’ve got the players to make some serious noise come May and June.

Women’s tennis

Geoff McDonald’s tennis team downed a good Kentucky team, 5-2, yesterday. Kentucky came in ranked No.17 in the country. No. 25 Sydney Campbell (national ranking), No.16 Frances Altick, Courtney Colton, Georgina Sellyn and Fernanda Contreras, all won in singles. No.23 Astra Sharma lost her match, 3 and 4, but Astra has been hurt and was a little rusty yesterday. Astra will get back to her usual form going forward. We are presently ranked No.8 in the country by the ITA rankings. Ohio State is still Numero Uno. We’re 8-2 overall and 1-0 in the SEC. We play at South Carolina on Thursday and at Florida on Saturday. South Carolina is ranked 12th and Florida is 15th, so we have our work cut out for us. But we have an outstanding team, that loves to work hard and compete. Geoff will have this group primed for the postseason come late April in the SEC’s and the NCAA’s.

Men’s golf

Our men’s golf team finished 6th out of 15 teams at the Querencia Cabo Collegiate tournament in Mexico. Junior Matthias Schwab shot 68, -3, on the last day. Freshman Patrick Martin shot one over, 72, sophomore Theo Humphrey shot 1 under, 70, and freshman Will Gordon shot one over, 72. We’ve got some good young players, who are gaining valuable experience, and we’ll be factors in May. We’re ranked 15th in the country at the moment by Golfstat.com. Our next competition is at the Schenkel Invitational in Statesboro, GA. on Friday, March 18th.

On the professional side, Luke and JC are playing in the Valspar Championship this weekend in Tampa. Luke is playing well this season, which is great to see, and Jon’s been solid. JC is presently 50th in the FedEx rankings and Luke is 90. Luke finished T-10 at the Honda last week, so he’s gaining momentum.

Brandt is having a stellar year, having won at Torrey Pines in the Farmers Insurance Open in late January. He’s presently No.3 in the FedEx Cup standings. He had to withdraw over the weekend from the WGC-Cadillac Championship because of a rib injury. Hopefully it’s nothing serious. He has had some problems with his ribs in the past, but the issue had gone away with medication. Brandt did say he was taking a “proactive” approach, so it may have been just a precautionary step, and won’t affect him going forward. Brandt will not play this week at the Valspar, but the Arnie Invitational is the next week at Bay Hill, a huge tournament with all the big names play in it, so hopefully, Brandt will be healthy for that. Brandt is still getting tuned up for Augusta National, April 7th-10th. If healthy, Brandt has a good shot. He usually plays well at the Masters and a victory there is No.1 on his bucket list.

Will have stuff on our pro baseball guys coming up as the MLB season gets closer. David firmly entrenched with the BoSox, most likely for the rest of his career, which is good. DP needs a home after getting moved around so much the last couple of years. Pedro still looking for a team. The Yankees are a possibility. I don’t know why any team wouldn’t want Pedro’s bat, and I watched him closely last year at Pittsburgh and he fielded pretty well at first base. Pedro has always been a good fielder, but had some struggles early at third with the Pirates and hasn’t been able to shake an unfair rap placed on him. He’s a big leaguer, and a good one, if some team would just give him a shot. Mike Minor was signed by the KC Royals, so that’s awesome news. Sonny, of course, will be back with the A’s, and everybody is expecting a huge year from Sonny. He’s going to be a popular commodity when he goes up for free agency, either after this season or next. Will check on that. Ryan Flaherty, I think, is still with the O’s. Gotta check on that, too. And we have a ton of players in the minors. Dansby at Atlanta is huge for him. I see the Braves building like the Astros have and see them as a factor come 2017 when they move into their new stadium. Hopefully, Dans will be their starting shortstop. He’s playing in his home town, so I know he’s elated about that. I’m expecting Carson to matriculate quickly through the minors. ESPN college baseball analyst Kyle Peterson said during the CWS last year, that he wouldn’t be surprised if the White Sox call Carson up very soon. He could be in their rotation this season before the year is over with. Tony Kemp is getting closer and closer to becoming a major leaguer for the Astros. it’s time for Tony to be a starter in the big leagues. He’s such a stud. Love that baseball is in the air now. I don’t know if my wife does. She wants to watch movies and shows sometimes in the summer, so there can be a conflict at times with my baseball teams. But she’s a champ. We both make adjustments.

Football just finished off the first two weeks of spring ball. Wade Freebeck had a really good practice Friday and is challenging Kyle Shurmur for the starting job. Defense playing well. We have some guys out right now with minor injuries, but they should be fine coming back from spring break next week. We’ve got a pretty favorable schedule. We open with South Carolina on Thursday, Sept. 1st, no time announced yet. Either 5 PM or 8:15 PM on ESPN I would assume. Our defense should be terrific. I love our new coaches. If our offense can start clicking starting against South Carolina, we could have a very good season. Our defense will be stellar. Have to stay healthy of course. As healthy as you can in college football.

Will have more coming up soon.

World Golf Championships-Cadillac Championship at Doral, preview-prediction

The TPC Blue Monster at Trump National Doral: 7,543 yards, par 72

Miami, Florida

Defending Champion: Dustin Johnson: Shot a 69 on the final day and came back from five shots to defeat J.B. Holmes by a shot, and Bubba by two shots. Dustin sank clutch putt after clutch putt to capture the championship. He finished -9, Holmes finished -8 and Bubba finished -7.

Last week’s winner at the Honda Classic: Adam Scott

Weather: Sunny today, Friday and Sunday. Cloudy Saturday. Winds anywhere from 8 MPH with gusts to 15. Sunday Sunny with winds 10-15 MPH.

TV: Today-Friday: Golf Channel: 12-5 PM CT/1-6 PM ET; Saturday: Golf Channel: 11 AM-2 PM CT/Noon-3 PM ET; NBC: 2–5 PM CT/3-6 PM ET; Sunday: Golf: 11 AM-1 PM CT/Noon-2 PM ET; NBC: 1-5 PM CT/ 2-6 PM ET.

Key holes:

No. 10, 600 yards, par 5

Water runs completely down the left side of the fairway. Driving is at a premium on this hole. Bubba really struggled with his driver and his putter in the final round last year and drove it into the bunker on this hole. Three shot hole. Can be a likely birdie possibility with three good shots.

No.15, 153 yards, Par 3

This is a peninsula green with water in front, back and to the left. Accuracy is at a premium. There are small targets for the golfer to hit. A par is a good score on this hole. This course was the third toughest on tour after the Masters and the U.S. Open at Chambers Bay last year.

No. 16, 341 yards, Par 4

It can play as short as 297 like it did last year on Sunday, so players who are in the hunt will try to drive the green. There is water on the left side, so that’s a problem if the player pulls his tee shot. There are bunkers surrounding the green and thick rough in back and to the sides. It’s a pretty narrow, small target for a green, but a good birdie opportunity with a solid tee shot that catches the green. Can be an eagle with a spectacular drive.

No. 18, 476 yards, Par 4

One of the toughest and most famous holes in golf. There is a high degree of difficulty off this tee box with a big lake to the left and a narrow fairway with palm trees covering the right side just off the fairway. The second shot will have water in play to the left, and the green is long and pretty narrow with long not being very good as there is thick rough behind the green and the grandstand area. Electric finishing hole which will provide high drama on Sunday most likely. Should be an awesome tournament, and this hole could determine who captures the 2016 WGC Cadillac.

Featured groups today:

10:10 AM CT/11:10 AM ET: Kevin Kisner, Phil, J.B.: going off No.10

10:32 AM CT/11:32 AM ET: Spieth, Day, Rory; going off No.10

10:43 AM CT/11:43 Justin Rose, Dustin, Adam Scott; No.10

11:38 AM CT/12:38 PM ET Bubba, Rickie Fowler, Henrik Stenson; going off No.1

Prediction:

All right, so last week at the Honda in Palm Gardens, Florida, Adam Scott won; the week before that at the Northern Trust at Riviera CC in LA, Bubba won; the week before that at Pebble Beach, Vaughn Taylor won; the week before that at the Waste Management at TPC Scottsdale Hideki Matsuyama won, the week before that at Torrey Pines at the Farmers Insurance Open, Sneds won, and the week before that at the Career Builders Challenge at PGA West in La Quinta, CA. Duf won. So it’s been a pretty random six weeks with veterans, and an unknown winning. I kind of like that the mid to late 30 guys are right there winning titles along with these young guys. So since this thing is so up in the air this week, I’m going to have to go back to my horse. Putting is the key in this tournament. Driving and putting, and the guy with the best putter is the player of the year from last year who won five times and captured two majors and almost won the Grand Slam. I’m going with the gunslinger again. His putter is the best in the game and his ball striking is right there with the best of them. He’s not long like Bubba, Dustin or J.B., but he can get it out there in the 300 yard range and his work on the greens will be the difference this week. Like Jason Day and Rickie Fowler to also be factors along with Adam Scott, but going with the gunslinger from Dallas again.

Going with Jordan Spieth once again
