Rivalry Week, Week 13

A'Shawn Robinson and the Tide front seven is impenetrable
An epic holiday weekend in college football in what has proven to be a superbly stellar season. And there are is a massive amount of riveting games in college football this Thanksgiving weekend. Of course, the 80th Iron Bowl is the headliner in Alabama, but also in the SEC, and in the national landscape, there are high quality match ups that include teams homing in on the college football playoff  or vying to get into a quality bowl game, or a bowl game period. A lot to break down today. Here’s a look at the weekend’s rivalry games.

Last week: 16-8

They say you never know in this one. Stranger things have happened in this game. But not this year. Alabama’s defense is better than more than three quarters of the defenses in the National Football League. The front seven is impenetrable against the run. The offense thrives on explosive plays with the awesome Derrick Henry, who, if he has another big game this week and next week, should secure the Heisman Trophy, and super freshman Calvin Ridley who makes explosive play after explosive plays after catching passes from Jake Coker. Calvin is a house call waiting to happen every time he touches the football. Cyrus Jones has secured first round draft pick status with his riveting punt returning ability this season as he has taken three to the house and has shown awesome leadership and playmaking ability in the secondary. I would say the entire starting 11 on defense will play in the NFL. I’ll go further and say there are probably 20-22 who will play in the National Football League. On offense, there are quite a few as well. It’s been a struggle for the Tigers this season. Gus will have all his tricks and schemes on display at Jordan-Hare, but it’s not going to be enough to overcome the best team in the country. Jovon Robinson is becoming a superb running back, Peyton Barber is solid, Roc Thomas and Kerryon Johnson are explosive playmakers who can make house calls if they get past the front seven of the Crimson Tide. But I don’t see Auburn figuring out how to run against this defense. Nobody else has been able to. Jeremy Johnson or Sean White will have to figure out ways through the air to keep Auburn in the game. The Auburn defense, which has improved somewhat over the season, will be severely tested by Henry and the emerging Bo Scarbrough. Kenyon Drake is a week or two away from being healthy, but Scarbrough showed last week that he is highly capable of becoming the second viable option to Henry. Damien Harris could be a stud, too. It’s a juggernaut coming down from Tuscaloosa.  The Crimson Tide is shooting for a fourth national championship in the last seven years. This is another step for them on their journey to win it all. Plenty of work left after the Iron Bowl though. But you gotta like the Tide to take care of business on the Plains.

Ole Miss by 1

Another classic Egg Bowl as they have become in the past couple of years. Ole Miss started the season with hopes of winning both the SEC and the national titles. That hasn’t happened with some slip ups, but they’ve had a fine season and are coming off a 38-17 thrashing of LSU, which has the LSU partisans after Les Miles’ job. State is coming off a riveting 51-50 victory over a then red hot Arkansas team after the Bulldogs got blasted by Alabama the week before. It was such a super impressive showing by the superb Dak Prescott, who threw for five touchdowns and ran for a couple of more against Arkansas. Both teams are aiming at a very good bowl and both will get it, particularly the winner here. Dak has magic and he’ll put on a masterful performance in his final home game in Starkville in what should be a stellar football game.

Clemson by 17

Dabo Swinney has put together a terrific season in Clemson. They have an electric quarterback in Deshaun Watson and a phenomenal running back in Wayne Gallman. The offense is highly explosive and the defense is extremely solid. The Gamecocks are trying to regroup and get ready for next year. A victory here would be a huge boost to their program that has really bottomed out this season. But it’s too much to ask against a team that could very well be headed to the College Football Playoff as the No.1 seed if they can take care of business this week and next against North Carolina in the ACC Championship game in Charlotte.

FSU by 2

Jim McElwain has crafted an impressive season in his first year in Gainesville. The Gators will more than likely play Alabama next Saturday in the SEC Championship game, and a victory here could get them possibly back in the playoff hunt. But the Gators’ offense has been anemic recently, and they don’t have enough firepower to keep up with the Noles, which, despite a somewhat down year for them by their standards, are still a good football team. I like Dalvin Cook to churn some serious yards out, and the Noles to get it done in the Swamp.

It’s been a disappointing season in Athens and people are a little restless with Mark Richt, as usual. But a victory over one of their chief rivals and a bowl victory would ease some of the painful losses against Alabama, Tennessee and Florida. Tech has really struggled this season after coming off an outstanding season last year that was capped off by an Orange Bowl victory over Mississippi State. It’s been a tough year for Paul Johnson and company. Sony Michel will be too much for the Tech defense to handle and the Dawgs will get some momentum heading into what should be a pretty good bowl game.

The Hat is under fire and needs to pull out a miracle finish to save his job. A stellar performance here could possibly save him, though it would be real questionable still. I like Leonard Fournette to go off against an Aggies defense that is still trying to get to a championship level. They’re not there yet.

UT by 17

The Dores have shown a lot of improvement in Coach Derek Mason’s second season winning SEC games over Missouri and Kentucky. The defense, for the most part, has been pretty stellar. The offense has not. Coach Mason needs to get better play on offense if he wants to start beating teams like Tennessee and South Carolina, and maybe even Georgia or Florida in the future. But he doesn’t have enough offense this Saturday. His defense will keep it competitive, but quarterback Joshua Dobbs and running back Jalen Hurd will make some plays in the passing and running game respectively. Dobbs will do it in both areas. Vanderbilt will have to find ways to move the chains, keep the Vols’ offense off the field and get it in the end zone. I just don’t think they can do enough in Knoxville to come away with the W. UT finishes its regular season at 8-4, a solid year with a solid bowl forthcoming.

Arkansas had a disappointing loss to Mississippi State last Saturday Night in Fayetteville but it was  a heckuva football game. The Hogs bounce back here as Bret Bielema keeps building the program back up to upper echelon SEC status. Missouri has a good defense and has a shot at a bowl game in Gary Pinkel’s final season after he was diagnosed with cancer sadly a few months ago. Missouri will play hard and make it a good game.

Two programs going in opposite directions. Jim Harbaugh has the Wolverines on the rise, while Urb and his Buckeyes are in a struggle right now. Like Harbaugh over Urb in the Big House and for Michigan to have a shot at playing in the Rose Bowl if Michigan State makes the playoff. Should be a fun game. I see the Wolverines and Harbaugh having a “Big House” Party.

The question mark for OU this Saturday was whether quarterback Baker Mayfield would be cleared to play after suffering concussion like symptoms last Saturday Night in a 31-3o victory over TCU at Norman. He’s good to go and so are the Sooners. In my opinion, they’re in the playoff if they win at Stillwater. Like Mayfield and his prolific offensive weapons to be too much for the Cowboys in Bedlam.

This is a little out on the limb, but I was so impressed with how TCU almost upset Oklahoma in Norman last Saturday Night with their third string quarterback, that I think they’re going to pull this off. It’ll ruin Baylor’s chances of making the playoff though they would need some chaos ahead of them to get in there anyway.  Baylor will be without injured quarterback Jarrett Stidham and TCU is without injured stud wide receiver Josh Doctson and quite possibly injured quarterback Trevone Boykin, though Boykin has a shot to play. With that said, I’m going with the slight upset here.

I truly believe Stanford is one of the top four teams in the country. It’s close, but they are as complete a team as you’ll find outside of Alabama and Oklahoma. They have two losses so they will need some complete chaos to even have a shoot. But a victory over the Fighting Irish and in the Pac 12 championship game would make it remotely possible.

Week 12 with some classics, a couple in the SEC, certainly nationally

Damien Harris (above) and Bo Scarbrough (below) will get their opportunities Saturday against Charleston Southern

Bo Scarbrough

Alabama and Auburn have more tune-up games this week for the Iron Bowl next Saturday. I know S went off yesterday when a writer asked him when he was planning on playing the freshmen in the Charleston Southern game. I don’t blame the writer for asking and I don’t blame S for his response. Charleston Southern is 9-1, and while they haven’t beaten anybody that great, they’re a challenge because Alabama needs to play well, get Damien Harris and Bo Scarbrough good reps to see what they can do if Kenyon Drake can’t make it back this season, though he could be available for the playoff if Alabama takes care of business, and get Jake Coker and the receivers some chances to make chain moving and explosive plays. Also, give Derrick Henry more carries to keep him charged for the late season push.

Auburn is still trying to figure things out. The defense played well against Georgia; they are coming around. But the offense couldn’t do anything against a pretty decent Georgia defense. Jeremy Johnson just hasn’t figured it out this year and Sean White has been on the shelf with an injury. Johnson is expected to start against Idaho. Auburn needs to win to get to a bowl game and get ready for the Crimson Tide next week. So both teams’ games are important in their respective ways. There are a three or four excellent games in the conference, and some blockbuster national games. Here’s a look at the slate this week.

The key here, to me, is seeing if Damien Harris and Bo Scarbrough can have good games. Derrick Henry has been phenomenal this year and has a good shot at winning the Heisman. But he needs help. So if one or both of these guys could step up and play well, that would be a huge boost to the team as it’s uncertain about Kenyan’s return from a broken right arm. Jake Coker needs to have a good game, and if the Tide could get a comfortable lead it would be beneficial to play the young guys for future purposes. But they need a good performance from the starters to keep the team tuned up for the Iron Bowl and what comes after that. Charleston Southern is 9-1 and starts Austin Brown, who played at UAB and was a pretty effective quarterback there. He’s done a good job for Charleston Southern and they run a version of the triple option which is always tough to defend. It’s actually a pretty good test for the defense as it gears up for the huge game next. Bama will take care of business. This is a hungry Alabama football team. They are the polar opposite of complacent. And they’re outstanding. Like the Tide to get it done comfortably and gear up for the Tigers next Saturday.

Auburn needed to have an identity on offense by now. They had been running the ball very well and took it down the field against Georgia on the first drive and looked like they were clicking. But it just went South after that. I don’t know what Gus’s plans are for the Iron Bowl at quarterback, but he will really need to get something out of Jeremy Johnson if Sean White is unavailable to play this week. White most likely will be able to play against the Crimson Tide, but Auburn really needs a boost from their offense. They need a good performance here to get some momentum going into next Saturday and also become bowl eligible.

Ole Miss by 5 1/2

Somebody asked Todd Gurley if he thought Leonard Fournette should skip his junior season and wait for the NFL draft in 2017. Gurley, who’s having an excellent rookie season with the St. Louis Rams, thought it was an idiotic question. I do too. Fournette did nothing against Alabama. Granted, Alabama has the best defense in the country and is better than many of the defenses in the NFL. But he couldn’t get anything done against Arkansas either last week. Fournette just needs to put his head down, block out this noise, and get better as a running back. If he can’t do it against college defenses how is he ever going to do it in the NFL. So he’s got plenty of work to do to become a big time player in college. After he’s played three seasons in college, and if he does well the rest of this season and next year, then he can go on to the next level. But right now, he’s got a tough defense to go against this Saturday. And he and his team have their work cut out for them. Ole Miss has struggled a little bit lately, but they’re a quality team. LSU has their hands full, and they haven’t been anything special this year. Alabama pummeled them two weeks ago and Arkansas pretty much pummeled them last week. I don’t think it gets any better for them this week. People in Baton Rouge are getting a little restless with Miles. He’s done a pretty good job there, but can’t seem to get over the hump with his talented rosters year in and year out. Fournette may have a good game, but it’s going to be tough to run against a good defense and passing is a question mark for LSU with the undependable Brandon Harris. Like the Rebels’ offense and defense  better than LSU’s.

The Vanderbilt defense has been outstanding under Derek Mason. They’ve got a lot of talent offensively, but can’g get it done in the big games it’s seems like. Going with the hotter team right now in what should be an excellent game.

Missouri had an excellent victory over a pretty good BYU team last Saturday. Going into that game, I thought the team was lost after the controversy surrounding the university and Gary Pinkel’s announcement that after the season he would be stepping down due to cancer, which I’m really sorry about. He’s been a very good coach, so I hope for the best for him. But the team is rallying around him right now. UT is a good offensive team, but Missouri plays good defense. Their young freshman quarterback, Drew Lock, is a talented player who was a highly rated recruit and is getting comfortable in the college game. Russell Hansbrough ran for 125 yards last week, so that helped the Tigers in their 20-16 win over BYU. The team is playing for their coach, so I’m going with another upset here.

Our football team played special and that’s what they are; basketball starts out very well, Jay, JMatt, Jon Curran

Oren Burks came to play some football Saturday and was rewarded as SEC defensive player of the week. He's part of a stud VU defense under Coach Mason
Football had a tremendous performance on Saturday in Vanderbilt Stadium as the defense and the offense really anchored down to capture the 21-17 SEC victory over the Kentucky Wildcats before over 30,000 vocal Dores’ fans. We moved to 4-6 overall on the season and 2-4 in the SEC with games at home Saturday versus A&M (6:30 PM CT/7:30 PM ET SEC Network) and at UT, Saturday, Nov. 28th, @ 3 PM CT/4 PM CT on the SEC Network. If we win both we go to a bowl game which would be an amazing accomplishment for this football program under second year Coach Derek Mason. It’s been a successful season so far, and there were all kind of recruits lined up Saturday at the stadium. Four-star cornerback Joejuan Williams, one of our key targets, was at the game among many other key guys. High three star running back Trevor Speights from Texas, will be at our game versus A&M Saturday. We could have a very strong finish to recruiting. Like the 12 guys we have so far.

But back to our present team. True freshman Kyle Shurmur played terrifically in only his second college start. Kyle finished the day going 13-for-26 for 166 yards, two TDs and no ints. Shurms took care of the ball, made some really nice throws and ran the offense superbly. He hooked up with sophomore Caleb Scott for what was the play of the game. With us leading 14-10 late in the second quarter, after a Shurmur to Kyle Anderton four yard TD pass that was created by an excellent strip of the ball carrier by Caleb “Zu” Azubike and an outstanding, diving fumble recovery by Jay Woods, and an Oren Burks int that he took to the house from 30 yards out, offensive coordinator Andy Ludwig went deep into his bag of tricks. After a UK timeout with :37 left in the second quarter and the ball at the UK 37 yard line, the offense went back onto the field. But Scott ran onto the field and got inside the numbers of the field, then headed back towards the sideline. The UK defense had no clue that he was still on the field and was inbounds. We snapped the ball to Kyle and he flipped a beautiful pass to Caleb, who caught the ball at the UK 15,  and cruised into the end zone to put us up 21-10 as we went into halftime. It was brilliant.

When I was playing football in my earlier years, which was a pretty good while ago, I was on the sixth grade team for my school, and we were scrimmaging our seventh grade team. We were a pretty decent team, but our seventh grade group was very good and loved knocking us around. They were just bigger than us. So to score, we had to come up with something out of the box. One of our receivers, who is on this blog, stayed on the sideline while the other 10 of us broke the huddle. When we snapped the ball, the defense came charging in and our quarterback threw it to our wide receiver on our “Sleeper” play. It worked. Our guy caught it and took it to the house. The seventh grade quarterback, who was a good player who also played safety, was so angry that we scored on them that he chased our guy down through the end zone about 10 yards passed the end line and tackled him. It was pretty hilarious.

Offensive standouts

1. Kyle: Outstanding leadership and performance. We’re going to be pretty happy with Shurms under center for the rest of this year and the next three years. Deuce Wallace is coming in, too, and Johnny McCrary still has good talent. We’ve also got Wade Freebeck and Shawn Stankavage, so we’re in good shape at quarterback the rest of this season and in the future.

2. Caleb Scott: The sophomore from Georgia, whose dad, Chuck, was an awesome tight end for us in the late 80’s, is going to be a star. Caleb caught three passes for 87 yards and had that super seven. He made a catch on the sideline of a throw from Kyle that he took another 25 yards down the field, but the refs ruled him out after 12 yards. I thought they missed the call and Caleb had stayed in bounds. Caleb played terrifically. With Caleb, Trent Sherfield, Latevius Rayford, Ronald Monroe and our tight ends, our passing game is going to be cookin this week and next. I expect Coach Ludwig to open the playbook even more this week against A&M and use our wide outs and tight ends more in the passing game.

3. Ralph Webb: Typical hard-nosed Ralph-like game. Thirty three carries 113 yards, and some tough ones at that. Just missed taking it to the house a couple of times. Ralph has plenty of explosive plays left in him the rest of this season and going forward. He’s just a sophomore.

4. Spencer Pulley, Jake Bernstein and the rest of the offensive line: The guys played awesome. They were physical on the run and excellent in pass blocking. Kyle didn’t hit the turf one time. Zero sacks. I’ll mention the other guys too: Barrett Gouger, Will Holden and Bailey Granier. Those guys played some outstanding, physical football. A lot of credit goes to O line coach Kevin Lightner for really developing our guys. Losing Andrew Jelks before the season was a blow, but the guys have made up for it. Andrew will be back next year, which is exciting. We’ve got good depth on the line, too. The future looks very bright up front. We have two good offensive tackles coming in and we have another, Grayson Stover from Florida, a high three-star, who we are heavily pursuing. Love the way our line has come together.

Defensive standouts

1. Oren Burks: Oren had two ints on the day. His first was a catch of a batted away ball by our stud cornerback Torren McGaster. Oren intercepted Torren’s tipped ball in the end zone to keep the Wildcats from scoring. Oren also had the pick six. Just read where Oren was named SEC defensive player of the week. That’s awesome for Oren and a testament to how good this defense is under Coach Mason and his coaches. Love what Chris Marve is doing out there. He is an active defensive coach for us. Chris is a defensive graduate assistant, but signals in the calls from Coach Mason. He’s such a great guy and a great role model for our players. Defensive line coach Frank Maile, linebackers coach Kenwick Thompson, cornerbacks coach Brett Maxie and safeties coach Mark Mattioli also deserve a lot of credit. Coach Mason runs the show, but we’ve got a great staff of coaches.

2. “Zu”: Caleb Azubike played like the Caleb Azubike we’ve been used to the last two to three years. Zu has had injury issues this season, but he really made a statement on Saturday with two sacks, a forced fumble, three tackles for loss, and the sack that ended the game. Awesome to have Zu back healthy and playing Caleb Azubike football.

3. Zach Cunningham: Zach just does it every week. Zach finished the day with 10 tackles and was  all over the field. He’s incredible. He’s the most underrated linebacker in the country, but not for long. Zach is making a name for himself and he’s just a sophomore.

4. Torren McGaster: Torren is another guy who is one of the best cornerbacks in the SEC. He’s making a name for himself too. Torren finished with six tackles, one for loss and two pass breakups including that key Oren interception in our end zone that Torren made possible by knocking the ball away from the receiver. Torren is a junior.

Our entire defense is swarming to the football and making game changing plays. The awesome Stephen Weatherly and Adam Butler,  Jay Woods, Torey Agee, Nifae Lealao, Darreon Herring, one of our key leaders out there, and Landon Stokes, are all dominating up front. Andrew Williamson, Torren, Tre Herndon and Oren are playing excellent back four football for us too. We’ve got guys like Ryan White,  Tre Bell, Jahmel McIntosh and Tre Tarpley  who are also excellent players in the secondary. Sophomore Emmanuel Smith and his younger brother, freshman Josh Smith, are emerging at nickel back and outside linebacker respectively, and are going to be excellent players for us. They already are good. Two plays that may have gone unnoticed, but I’m sure the coaches have noticed, was the contain play by Josh on an outside run by Kentucky running back Boom Williams. Williams is an explosive player and had some good runs against us, but Josh made an excellent contain play that led to a tackle for loss by Torren of about 12 yards. The other was Tre Herndon hustling and catching Williams on what looked like a 75 yard TD run. Tre got Williams tackled Williams at the seven. Kentucky took it in from there, but it was terrific hustle by Tre. A play like that can save a football game.

The whole defense was exceptional like we’ve become accustomed to with this group. It just keeps getting better and better with our defense.

The special teams play of the game was made by freshman safety Andrew Rector, who blocked a Kentucky punt. All these guys who are making plays for us are coming back. But guys like Zu, Darreon and Steven Scheu are seniors and they want to get it done now. The future is here right now, right in front of us, and I know these guys are going to take advantage of it. They’re awesome kids, who KNOW they can win every time out now.

Now it’s on to A&M. They’ve got a quarterback in Kyler Murray who can make explosive plays and a guy off the bench if Murray struggles, Kyle Allen, who can throw it all over the field. They have a ton of playmakers and freshman Christian Kirk is one of the most dangerous wide receivers/ punt returners in the SEC, if not the country. So we have our work cut out for us. Tre Carson is a solid running back as well for the Aggies. We’ll have to play swarming, aggressive and smart defense against these guys and we HAVE to tackle well, both between the tackles and in space. Offensively, we need to run the football well and have Kyle, the receivers and the tight ends have very good games because we’re going to need to put points on the board. Our advantage will be our physicality. A&M is 7-3 overall and 3-3 in the conference and they’re playing for a good bowl game. It’s the most important game on the schedule because it’s the next one and we’re playing for postseason purposes now. Huge one Saturday, but so proud of the tremendous effort by our talented football team on Saturday. Time to get back to work.

Basketball

Nice win by our guys Friday night, 80-41, over Austin Peay. Wade Baldwin IV, WB4, led the way with 14. Luke Kornet had 13 points and 13 boards, and Damian Jones finished with 12 and five pulls. We were 32-of-72 from the field, 44%, eight of 19 from three, 42% and 8-of-15 from the line, 53%, which needs to improve and should. We’ve got too many good shooters to struggle from the line. Luke really played an outstanding game. Riley LaChance and Matthew Fisher-Davis (MFD) played well also. Freshman Camron Justice was two-for-three from deep. Camron was a prolific shooter in Kentucky the last three years and really brings some outside shooting to go along with the awesome shooting of Riley, Wade, MFD and Luke. Nolan Cressler, our transfer from Cornell, is another guy to get excited about. Nolan only hit one trifecta, but he averaged 16 points two years ago at Cornell and is an outstanding three point marksman. Very excited about freshmen Joseph Toye and Samir Sehic. Both are going to be outstanding players for us, Joseph at the three, and Samir down low. Samir had seven pulls on the night. He’s physical. Joe was a perfect three-for-three from the field and sank his only trifecta attempt. Both, along with Camron, are ready to be major contributors to what looks like a very special team. Kevin may be redshirting 6’11” big man Djery Baptiste, but Djery will be a force when he gets his offensive game going and he’ll be a sheriff underneath for us in the future. Our defense was really good on Friday night as well. We have the athletes to play outstanding defense. The present looks terrific and the future looks just as terrific with the guys we have now and the youth of this team. We’re young age-wise, but we gained so much experience last year. We’re ready to make a statement both in the SEC and nationally. Gardner-Webb tonight at 7 PM CT/8 PM ET on the SEC Network+ channel online. The Runnin’ Bulldogs have one of the most experienced starting fives in college basketball with four seniors and a junior starting. They lost Friday to Iowa, 74-59, but Iowa is a good team, so we need to be laced up and ready to go tonight.

We have now sank 932 three-pointers in a row since the inception of the three point line, trailing only UNLV in the category for most in the history of the line. Princeton, UNLV and us are the only three teams in the country to make at least one three pointer in every game since the inception of the three point line in 1986-87. This team should keep that going throughout this season with the shooters we have without a doubt, and maybe UNLV will stumble. This team has plans to do special things this season.

Jay Cutler

Jay played spectacularly in the Bears 37-13 victory over the St. Louis Rams in St. Louis yesterday. Jay finished the game against a pretty good defense 19-of-24 for 258 yards and three touchdowns and finished with a quarterback rating of 151. 158.3 is perfect, so Jay was about as good as you can get under center yesterday. The Bears moved to 4-5 on the season and Green Bay lost, falling to 6-3 on the season. So it’s getting interesting for the Midway guys. The Bears host Peyton and the Broncos this Sunday at Soldiuh Field at noon CT/1 PM ET on CBS. Should be a classic. The Broncos got crushed by KC yesterday, and Peyton had a terrible day throwing four interceptions. The Broncos have lost two in a row after having started the season 7-0. The way Jay and the offense is playing and the way the defense is really starting to get it going under defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, a great one who came over from the 49ers where they had exceptional defenses under him, we have a good shot with the Broncos and getting to 5-5 will clearly put us in the hunt for a playoff spot. We then visit Green Bay Thanksgiving night (7:30 PM CT/8:30 PM ET on NBC, Thursday, Nov. 26th). If we can handle the Broncos, the game at Green Bay will be outrageously huge. Just heard that Peyton has a partially torn plantar fascia in his left foot, and will be out and Brock Osweiler will start in his place. Still have to play well. The Broncos have a very good defense and a good running game.

Tight end Zach Miller was tremendous again catching five passes for 107 yards including an 83 yard house call on a short pass from Jay that Zach caught at the Bears 17 and just flew by everybody for the seven. What an athlete. Matt Forte better hurry up and get back because Jeremy Langford, the rooking running back out of Michigan State, is playing tremendous football for Chicago. Jeremy ran for 73 yards and a seven and caught seven passes for 109 yards and a seven as well. He’s awesome. Ka’ Deem Carey played excellent football as well running for 56 yards on 14 carries. Of course the Bears will welcome Matt back with open arms when he returns from injury, but we’ve got some pretty good options if he can’t make it back soon. Alshon Jeffery only caught three passes for 23 yards, but he’s a huge part of this offense and will be heavily involved in the game plan against Denver and Green Bay. Love the way the defense is playing also. LaMarr Houston has found himself under Fangio and is playing outstanding at defensive end/outside linebacker. He’s always been a stellar player, but is starting to get back to his old form when he was at Kansas City this season. Kyle Fuller and Tracy Porter are playing exceptional football at corner and safety respectively, and Shea McClellan was excellent at linebacker yesterday. This team has it going.

JMatt

Not the best game for the Eagles yesterday as they lost to the Dolphins, 20-19. JMatt had three receptions for 21 yards, but starting quarterback Sam Bradford was knocked out of the game with a concussion and a shoulder injury, so that didn’t help. Mark Sanchez couldn’t really get the offense going. I do believe in Sanchez going forward if Bradford is out for a while. I think he can get the job done with the weaponry around him. The Eagles dropped to 4-5 on the season and host Tampa Bay Sunday, then play Thanksgiving Day at the Lions on FOX at 11:30 AM CT/12:30 PM ET. That’s November 26th as well. The Giants lost to the Patriots in a heartbreaker yesterday, and fell to 5-5, so we’re right there. It’s time for this team to get hot. I watched the preseason and Sanchez threw it to Jordan a lot, so he should get a lot of opportunities even if Bradford is out a while. Eagles need to start winning.

Fes

Festus Ezeli is still making his mark for the Golden State Warriors and they are the best team in the NBA right now at a perfect 11-0. Fes is getting a lot of time and playing very well. The Warriors’ coaches really like his toughness and lunch pale/hard hat mentality. The Warriors play the Toronto Raptors tomorrow night in Oracle Arena, so I’ll get some intel on Fes from that game. This is a super team.

Jon Curran, Luke List, Brandt

JC finished in a tie for 29th at the OHL Classic at Mayakoba in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico. Jon finished -8 for the tournament shooting 68-71-67-70. He played well and picked up a good check. Luke List played but did not make the cut, but Luke, Jon and Brandt are all playing this week at the RSM Classic in Sea Island, Ga. Awesome to have all three guys competing. Graeme McDowell won the OHL yesterday in a playoff. Glad to see Brandt back out there and always love seeing Luke and JC compete, too. I’m just really happy for Luke, as he’s worked so hard to make the Tour. JC, too. Brandt is loaded with talent and a major is certainly attainable this year. Brandt’s work with superb teacher Butch Harmon has already paid dividends and it will again this season. Brandt always plays well at Augusta and the U.S Open., the Open Championship and the PGA are at three classic courses this year. The U.S. Open is at the venerable Oakmont Country Club where Angel “El Pato” Cabrera won in 2007, and the PGA is at historic Baltusrol Golf Club in New Jersey, just outside of NYC. It’s a classic as well. Phil won the PGA Championship there in 2005, one of his five majors. That’s sensational. The Open Championship will be played at the famous Royal Troon Golf Club in Scotland. Would love for Brandt to get as many majors as possible in his career. This could very well be his year. Would love to see JC and Luke compete at those venues as well. They’ll both have to win on tour this season to get in those events prior to them starting.

Final notes

Our women’s cross country team has won two Southern meets that are big deals and are going to the NCAA’s. I’ll find out more, but this team is apparently pretty awesome. Actually we won the NCAA regional at Alabama on Nov.13th, this past Friday, and are running in the NCAA Championships on Nov. 21st, Saturday, at Louisville, Kentucky. Our coach, Steve Keith, is doing an exceptional job. Will have more on the girls after the meet on Saturday. Caroline Pietrzyk, a freshman from Malibu, Cali, finished second at the regionals. Caroline is a talent.

And our women’s basketball team started off well with a W over Mississippi Valley State, 89-39. There is good talent on this team and Coach Melanie Balcomb’s 2016 recruiting class is in the top 20 in the country with some outstanding players, who just signed up with us. The girls are getting it going. We have a somewhat younger group, but I like the makeup of this group and the future ahead.

Will have a breakdown of tonight’s game against Gardner-Webb tomorrow in the AM. Great stuff going on.

Kentucky tomorrow; what we need to do, football-bball recruiting, bball in action, Jay, JMatt, JC, Luke

Stephen Weatherly and the defense will need to duplicate last week's performance and in all likelihood this stellar group will
1. Play Vanderbilt defense. Stop Ky running back Boom Williams and the run, get pressure on Patrick Towles when he passes, and get some sacks and get three or four turnovers like we did against Florida. Play VU-Mason-like  defense.

2. Take care of the football on offense and run it well. Line needs to open holes for Ralph, Darrius, Josh and Dallas and let them churn up some yards, move the chains, and maybe take one or two to the house.
3. Pass the ball well enough. Johnny, if it’s Johnny, which is most likely, will need to connect on some throws to help us get the job done.
VU 17, Kentucky 13

We’ll move to 4-6 on the season and 2-4 in the SEC. Need this one. Hopefully we’ll have a great home crowd.
Recruiting
Some awesome recruits visiting this weekend with some of our commits and four-star cornerback recruit Joejuan Williams visiting. Joejuan is a high priority for us. Also, among the star-studded visiting group, is my man from right here in B’ham, Alabama’s Mountain Brook High School Joe Donald. Joe 4 is a very good friend of mine’s son and is a heckuva linebacker. Hard hitter, fast, strong and plays Coach Mason-like VU, Stanford football. Just the kind of player-person Coach Mason wants on his football team. Joe 4 is an outstanding student and an excellent young man. Would love to see J4 get an offer. He would be an outstanding addition to our ’16 class.

Bball news

Kevin signed two fine young men and basketball players in this signing period for 2016. 89, three star point guard Payton Willis, and 90, four star power forward Clevon Brown are now part of our basketball program. Payton is a 6’4”, point guard from Fayetteville, Arkansas, who averaged 15.9 ppg, 3.6 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.5 steals his junior year for Fayetteville High School.

Clevon is a 6’8” 230 pound power forward out of San Antonio, Texas (Churchill High School) who averaged 16.8 points, 9.4 rebounds and 3.2 blocks his junior season.

These are two excellent additions for the 2016-17 team. Really like Payton and Clevon. We’re going to be loaded again next year. Not sure if Kevin and the staff are totally through yet with recruiting. We may get another guy in the spring. There are other prospects out there who could fit our profile of high character kids who are good student and talented basketball players.

Now we crank up the 2015-16 season with very high hopes. Wade Baldwin IV, Riley LaChance, Matthew Fisher-Davis, Damian Jones, Luke Kornet and our talented basketball team gets it started tonight at 7 PM CT/8 PM ET at Memorial Gym against Austin Peay. The game will be on SEC Network + on the computer.
Fes Ezeli had 10 points, two rebounds and three assists in Golden State’s 129-116 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves. The Warriors moved to 10-0 on the season and look better than they did a year ago when they won it all. Fes was five-of-six from the field. Stephen Curry finished with 46 on 15-of-25 shooting from the field, eight-of-13 from trifecta, and eight-of-eight from the line. Curry is outrageously good. Fes is a key player in the Warriors’ attempt to achieve back to back NBA titles. Pumped for Fes!

Jon Curran, Luke List

Jon Curran is at -3 and Luke List is at +4 after the first round in the Mayakoba Classic in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. The leaders are Justin Leonard and Aaron Baddeley at -6. JC right there. Luke has some work to do. The cut right now is at -1, so Luke probably needs to shoot six or seven under to make the cut. It’s possible. JC will be a factor. Both tee off around noon CT/ 1 PM ET today. Golf Channel will telecast starting probably around 1 PM CT/ 2 PM ET.

Jay, JMatt

Jay and the Bears are at the Rams this Sunday at Noon CT/1 PM ET. Jay with an all world game Monday night in a victory over the Chargers at San Diego.

JMatt and the Eagles will host the Miami Dolphins at the Linc on Sunday. JMatt was unreal good Sunday Night against the Cowboys at Jerryville.

Both played spectacularly well.

Will keep up with Zac Stacy and Casey Hayward as well. Casey starts for the Packers and Zac is getting playing time for the Jets. Zac did play a little bit last night as a matter of fact in a 22-17 Jets’ loss to the Bills. He returned one kick back for nine yards. Would like to see Zac get more opportunities. Will keep you posted on Casey. Packers host Detroit on Sunday at Noon CT/ 1 PM ET.

Another epic November Saturday in College football, week 11

Jovon Robinson is making a major statement for the Tigers
Some classics Saturday in week 11, one on the Plains and one in Starkvegas, along with a huge national tilt with major national implications on the line in Waco between Oklahoma and Baylor. Some other key SEC match ups and national headliners. Here’s a look at this weekend’s action.

Last week: 16-8

Should be an excellent game at Auburn. The question for both sides is at quarterback. I am hearing that Jeremy Johnson will get the start for Auburn, but that Sean White will be able to play. Gus and Rhett Lashlee will see how Jeremy is doing, and if he’s struggling, they’ll turn to White. For Georgia, two quarterbacks will most likely play. Greyson Lambert has shown signs of being decent but Brice Ramsey is average at best. Mark Richt will probably start Lambert and then see how he does. The running game will be critical for both sides. Jovon Robinson has been a horse the last two weeks running for 250 yards and a seven, and Peyton Barber has been steady and solid all season with 828 yards on the ground and 12 TDs. Kerryon Johnson gives AU the take it to duh house threat if he can get in the open field, though Robinson can make explosive plays as well. Georgia will rely on the super running back Sony Michel, who has rushed for 747 yards and 7 TDs. Keith Marshall has done a pretty good job in relief with Nick Chubb out for the season. Marshall has rushed for 255 yards and three TDs. Brendan Douglas is a big back for Georgia who’s pretty good as well. Douglas gets tough yards and runs hard.

The rushing attacks for both sides should excel on Saturday, but at some point each team will have to throw it. I like AU’s defense’s three ints last week against A&M. Freshman Carlton Davis is playing extremely well at corner for the Tigers. He has three interceptions on the year. He’s going to be a superstar. He already is a stellar player. The defense played really well last week. The Georgia defense shut down Kentucky, 27-3, so they are capable.

The Tigers will have to throw it some to win this game. So will the Dawgs. The Tigers are at home and played a heckuva game last week. They need this victory to become bowl eligible.

The only way to beat Alabama is to pass it well and maybe setup some kind of running game. But as Leonard Fournette found out last Saturday Night in Tuscaloosa, it’s next to impossible to run on the Crimson Tide front seven. State does have Dak Prescott. Dak has completed 200-of-300 passes, 67%, for 2,351 yards and 18 TDs against only one interception. That’s sensational. He has also rushed for 418 yards and seven TDs. He makes State go. De’Runnya Wilson is Dak’s go to receiver in the passing game. He has 37 receptions for 548 yards and eight TDs. Fred Ross has 51 receptions for 548 yards and two TDs. Brandon Holloway is a fast running back and has rushed for 220 yards and six TDs. He’s not a power guy, they really don’t have that, but he has excellent speed.

Priority one for the Tide defense is stopping Dak. He’s actually having a better season than he has ever had at State. Awesome guy, too. Love Dak.

Derrick Henry has been phenomenal this season and has certainly stated his case so far for the Heisman Trophy. He has run for 1,254 yards, and leads the SEC  in rushing touchdowns with 17. He ran for 210 yards and three TDs against LSU last week. Wow, he was good. The offensive line is really clicking for the Tide. It goes almost without saying; this defense is all time good right now. I’d put it up there with some of the best defenses in college football history, particularly the front seven. The back four are really playing well, too, though they’re still sometimes vulnerable to the deep ball.

For State to win, Dak will have to play the best game of his career and the State defense will have to somehow stop Henry and make Jake Coker beat them in the passing game. State’s got a pretty good defense. They will give Alabama a pretty good challenge in Starkville, but I like the Crimson Tide to prevail at the end. One thing that might have been overlooked in the Tide’s domination of LSU last week was Adam Griffith’s 55 yard field goal. That was beautiful. S says he does that all the time in practice, and if he can start converting on field goal opportunities consistently, that would be a huge boost to the team. Looks like he’s gotten it down.

Bret Bielema and the Hogs got an improbable and hard fought victory at Ole Miss. That game was electric offensively. Brandon Allen and the Hogs prevailed 53-52 on some of the most impossible plays I’ve ever seen. The backwards lateral from tight end Hunter Henry at the Ole Miss 26 yard line that landed in Alex Collins hands on the Ole Miss 42 which Collins ran for  a first down on fourth and 25 in the overtime period and even fumbled before Arkansas recovered at the eight and then scored.  After Ole Miss thought they had the game won in overtime when Allen threw an incomplete pass on fourth down, an Ole Miss defender committed a face mask, and Arkansas took it in and converted the two point conversion on a gutsy call by Bielema in overtime. It was amazing. That was an all time exciting college football game. Arkansas is a good football team. Leonard Fournette is probably pretty ticked off though and so is his team after getting blasted by the Crimson Tide last Saturday Night and with Fournette only rushing for 31 yards. Fournette should have a big game. I think Arkansas has a shot here though. This team has some magic to it. And as a matter of fact, I’m going with the upset here.

I love the job that Shawn Elliott is doing as interim head coach at SC. He’s making a strong case to be the head coach for the future at South Carolina. If he can pull this off and be really competitive the rest of the season, and maybe knock off Clemson at home, he should be South Carolina’s full time head coach going forward. He seems like a great guy and he has the team pumped. They lost a heartbreaker in Knoxville last Saturday, 27-24, when they were driving for the winning seven with under a minute left, but tight end Jerrell Adams, after making a nice catch and a heckuva run after the catch, unfortunately fumbled at the UT 18 and UT recovered to claim the victory. But it was an awesome effort by the Gamecocks. Florida just got by a heckuvan effort by the Vanderbilt defense a week ago in the Swamp. The Gators survived the Dores 9-7 on a late field goal that clinched the SEC East.

But I’m going to go for another upset here. Love what Shawn Elliott is doing.

Derek Mason had his defense ready to play last Saturday in Gainesville and they should have won the game. They had four turnovers and didn’t turn the ball over once. They shut down Florida’s offense. They just need to get better play from quarterback Johnny McCrary. Johnny has talent, he just needs to hit some throws Saturday and get some confidence. VU’s strategy is to play stellar defense, run the football, and take care of the ball. That’s their formula until McCrary starts passing the ball better. Not sure about Kentucky. They look a little bit in disarray right now after last week’s debacle at Georgia. Patrick Towles can be good at quarterback at times and Boom Williams will be back this week at running back so that gives the Wildcats a good shot. But I’m going to go with Vandy to pull it off here. Coach Mason is turning the corner at Vanderbilt and laying the foundation for success the rest of this season and into the future.

BYU isn’t intimidated to play anywhere. They just line it up and say bring it on. Missouri is totally dysfunctional right now with the racial stuff going on at the school. It’s not a good situation with the Missouri Chancellor and the President of the system resigning. They need to work this out for the students and clear this thing up so the students and the faculty can concentrate on making the school the best it can be. This major situation has to be a distraction for the football team. It’ll cost the Tigers this Saturday because BYU is a good football team and they don’t care about Missouri’s issues.

I watched the Sooners blast Iowa State last night, and am very impressed with their football team. Quarterback Baker Mayfield is playing at a very high level this season completing 193-of-275 passes, which is 70.2%, for 2,812 yards, 28 TDs and just four ints. Running back Samaje Perine is a stud with 806 yards and 10 TDs. Joe Mixon has added 528 yards and five TDs at rb. Jarrett Stidham is a super talented freshman quarterback for Baylor and put on a nice show last Thursday Night in the Little Apple completing 23-of-33 passes for 419 yards and three TDs against no interceptions in a 31-24 Baylor victory over K State. They’ve got playmakers through the roof at Baylor led by standout wide receiver Corey Coleman, who caught 11 passes for 216 yards and two sevens against K State, and running back Shock Linwood, who rushed for 72 yards, decent, against Kansas State. Coleman has caught 58 passes for 1,178 yards and 20 TDs this season, which is tied for the lead nationally in TDs with Louisiana Tech running back Kenneth Dixon. That’s outrageously good. Linwood has run for 1,046 yards and nine, sevens on the season. Another guy to look out for in the Oklahoma offense is Sterling Shepard, who’s caught 47 passes for 826 yards and seven TDs.

This will be a classic in Waco. I like the Sooners to prevail and really make a move in the national picture after this victory. Really like this OU team

Like Dabo and his team to be doing another premature championship shuffle after this one. His dancing is getting a little questionable right now. There is some tough football left to be played. They still have to play @South Carolina and against most likely North Carolina in the ACC Champioship game. So Dabo may want to slow down on his Whip dances.

Ohio State is showing some of the same dysfunction that FSU showed last year. Maybe to the degree of the Jameis fiasco, but J.T. Barrett, the starting quarterback and a team captain, got a DUI two weeks ago, and that’s not a great sign. He got suspended for a game and he’s back. I hope the committee really watches this team closely over the next four weeks and sees if they are really worthy of being in the playoff. They made the mistake last year picking FSU over a better TCU team that had a chance to win it all, and FSU was a disaster in the semifinal as they got blasted by Oregon. I hope the committee remembers that, though the Buckeyes have some serious work left. Illinois is not bad. but they’re not very  good either, so this is a W. But then it gets serious for the Buckeyes. Michigan State at home and at Harbaugh and Michigan. This team will have to earn it and they should have to.

Now while I said I like Notre Dame, but don’t love them, I am very bullish on the Cardinal. They have a complete football team in every phase of the game. Christian McCaffrey may be the most underrated superstar in college football. He’s rushed for 1,207 yards and six TDs this season. He’s also caught two passes for sevens. His touchdown total may not be enough to keep up with Henry and Corey Coleman, but he’s quite a football player. Quarterback Kevin Hogan’s got it together and thrown for 16 TDs against just six ints. He’s struggled with accuracy in the past, but is clicking now as he’s completing 133-of-201 passes, 66%, for 1,831 yards. Hogan has also rushed for 226 yards and 3 sevens. Their defense is very good. They have it all, much like Alabama, Clemson, possibly, and I’m starting to think Oklahoma too. I’m really starting to like North Carolina as well. Like Stanford to take care of business at home over an Oregon team that is not playing up to Oregon standards under third year coach Mark Helfrich.

Harbaugh’s gotten the ship righted after the Michigan State fiasco and the Wolverines are playing good football again as they are now  focused on the task at hand of course, which is Indiana, but in the back of their minds thinking about a showdown in the Big House, Saturday, Nov. 28th vs Urb and the Buckeyes. They’ll have to play Penn State on the road the week before that, too, so they have their work cut out for them if they want to have a shot at the Big Ten East Division. Utah is still leading the Pac 12 South at 5-1 with games left against @ Arizona, Saturday, UCLA at home, Nov. 21st, and Colorado, at home, Nov. 28th. So things are setting up for Utah maybe getting back into the national picture. USC is a better team to me, USC is excellent, but Utah is still a really good football team. So if they win out, they win the Pac 12 South and most likely play Stanford in the Pac 12 title game which would be an excellent game. USC is 4-2 in the Pac 12 South, but as hot as anybody in the country right now.

I watched SC beat Arizona, 38-30,  late last Saturday night, and they’ve got an awesome team.  Interim coach Clay Helton has done an excellent job cleaning up the mess that Steve Sarkisian left and has the Trojans playing traditional, excellent USC football. He really deserves a shot for the head job if this continues throughout the rest of the season especially if  SC beats UCLA. They’ll need some help from UCLA in the Pac 12 South to get to the Pac 12 title game. UCLA will have to beat Utah and SC will have to beat the Bruins. USC blasted Utah at home a couple of weeks ago. It’s certainly possible. Running backs Ronald Jones and Justin Davis are absolute studs. Jones had an incredible 74 yard touchdown run against ‘Zona last week. He’s awesome. Jones has run for 710 yards and six scores, and Davis has added 420 yards and five, 7’s. Tre Madden was the starter, but he’s been hurt some, and Jones has definitely picked up the slack. Really good football team here.

The Playoff Picture

Reggie Ragland and the Tide defense are superb

1. Alabama

Wow, what a victory Saturday Night over LSU. A shellacking, 30-16, and to me, solidified the Tide’s spot at the top of the rankings. Derrick Henry rushed for 210 yards on 38 carries with three TDs. What a workhorse. Derrick now has 1,254 rushing yards on the season and 17 TDs. He’s my Heisman leader in the clubhouse right now. We’re into November, it’s now time to talk about the Heisman. Defense is all time good. I said this before the season: this may be the best defense S and Kirby have had in their years at Alabama. S’s eighth, Kirby’s seventh. Huge game at State this Saturday. Kickoff is at 2:30 PM CT/3:30 PM ET on CBS.

2. Clemson

Dabo Swinney may be the best story in college football this season. He came up with a new dance for his team after Clemson defeated FSU Saturday afternoon at Death Valley, 23-13. The good thing about Dabo’s dances is they’re funny and not feminine. They get his team pumped up. He’s a great guy and a heckuva football coach. Clemson is playing super ball right now.

3. Oklahoma State

Mike Gundy and his Cowboys blasted TCU, 49-29, at Boone Pickens Stadium in Stillwater, OK Saturday afternoon. Oklahoma State along with OU look like the best teams in the Big 12 with Baylor right there too.

4. Stanford

David Shaw has an outstanding football team right now. Tailback Christian McCaffrey has rushed for 1,207 yards and six TDs. He’s a super good player for the Cardinal. The Cardinal and USC look like the best two teams in the Pac-12 right now. Could be a colossal showdown in the Pac-12 championship game. Of course there is some football to be played. Stanford has games against Oregon, Cal and Notre Dame, all at home, but I like them in all of three of those games. USC still has to play UCLA in a backyard brawl in the Pac-12 South, so they’ve got work. Really liking this Stanford group right now.

Extremely proud of our football team, NFL,MLB, PGA, VU basketball, women’s tennis, men’ golf

Zach Cunningham played his heart out yesterday in our outstanding effort against a school South of us we'll beat next year.
“You look at it, we’re just as good as Florida.”

Coach Mason in his post game press conference after our very close loss to the 8-1 and East Division champion Florida Gators.
I agree with Coach. The defense was exceptional yesterday. Four turnovers (including one on special teams), five sacks; we were awesome on defense. Zach Cunningham is playing like an All-American at inside backer. Just phenomenal job by Coach Mason and our defensive staff of stopping the Gators’ offense, which had only turned the ball over six times in their previous eight games, and was averaging over 30 points per game. Losing 9-7 to the Gators at the Swamp with a chance to win it at the end is something to be very proud of. We are now 3-6 overall and 1-4 in the SEC with some very winnable games coming up at home against Kentucky (next Saturday, 11-14, 3 PM CT/4 PM ET, SEC Network), and then at home vs A&M, before we travel to Tennessee to finish off the season. Win all three and we’re in a bowl game, and I see that as possible, even though it seemed daunting after last week’s loss at Houston. The Kentucky game is very winnable. A&M is too. And UT is not out of the question.
We have a younger, but growing team that is figuring out how to win. And that’s exciting for this year and the future. Just need to lock down these recruits come signing day and add four or five more and we’ll have a very solid ’16 class.
If we get it done next Saturday against the Wildcats, it’ll be a huge boost to the players. They then will know that, going into a game that they can and WILL win for the rest of the season. Kentucky lost at Georgia, 27-3 yesterday, A&M lost at home to Auburn, 26-10 last night, and UT just got by South Carolina, 27-24, at home, and needed a late fumble recovery deep in their own territory to keep from possibly being upset. So all three of these games are attainable.
Believe strongly in what Coach Mason and the coaches are doing on defense, and Coach Ludwig is just trying to find ways to get us over the top on offense. Johnny struggled a little yesterday, but he did take care of the ball, which was huge. We had an unfortunate punt, but as Coach Mason said, that’s football, it’s unpredictable. Johnny needs to keep practicing hard and working to improve under Coach Ludwig. He will. Still believe in him. Ralph had a beautiful 74 yard scamper for a seven. We ran the ball pretty effectively. Ralph and the o line played really hard.
So I remain highly optimistic about the remainder of this season and going forward into the future. We just need to take care of business against Kentucky. We’re favored by 2 1/2.
Will have JMatt report tomorrow. The Eagles play at the Cowboys tonight on Sunday Night Football (7:20 PM CT/8:20 PM ET, NBC), Jay and Bears at Chargers tomorrow night on Monday Night Football (7:30 PM CT/8:30 PM ET, ESPN). Will see about Zac and Casey Hayward as well.
Luke List playing well at the Sanderson Farms tournament on the PGA Tour in Jackson, Ms. Good to see Luke on the tour. He was the 22nd out of the last 25 to make it from the Web.com playoffs. Proud of Luke. He’s worked hard.
Luke at -5, tied for 50th right now. He’s +1 today through 10. They got behind on this tournament because of a ton of rain in Jackson yesterday, so they’re in the third round. They’ll finish up tomorrow. Luke and JC in the PGA tournament next week  in Mexico. It’s the OHL Classic at Mayakoba in Playa del Carmen, Mejico. Good to see Luke and Jon competing. Brandt will get back after it soon. Fun to have three of our guys out there.
Rumors have it that the Cubs are in the lead in the DP sweepstakes right now. David will be commanding a large contract and he’s earned it, though would like to see him have more postseason success. The Dodgers, Yankees, Cardinals and Blue Jays are also involved. Something will happen in December.
Not sure about Pedro, what his situation is in Pittsburgh, but I thought he had a really good finish to the season, both hitting and fielding. Wouldn’t mind seeing him on another team, somebody like the Cubs, where he’d be more appreciated.
Sonny will be back with the A’s. Still got a year left on his rookie contract. Hoping Mike Minor can get back for the Braves. Mike still a great pitcher who battled an injury this season. It may have been a Tommy John injury. Anyway, he’s coming back to Atlanta..
Speaking of baseball, our VU team should be loaded once again. Our freshmen class is the top rated class in the country by Perfect Game. We have good players coming back. Our 2016 class is No.2 in the country by Perfect Game and our 2017 class is No.1 in the country. Corbs is doing his typical terrific job of recruiting. The goal at Vanderbilt is to win SEC and national championships and we will continue to pursue that goal every single season. The 2015-16 season looks very promising with players like Bryan Reynolds, Jeren Kendall, Will Toffey, Penn Murfee and Ro Coleman returning in the lineup, and a rotation which will include John Kilichowski and Kyle Wright, depending on what Corbs wants to do with Kyle. And closer Hayden Stone will return. Will be awesome to get Hayden back from his arm injury that kept him out almost the entire season last year. Will have more with Corbs and the team coming up.
Festus Ezeli is going off for the Golden State Warriors. He was 7-for-7 from the field Thursday night in a win for the Warriors and had 12 points and 11 rebounds last night for Golden State in another victory. Golden State is 7-0 and look better than last year. Fes is a key player for them. John Jenkins has played some for the Dallas Mavericks. He is on the team. Would love to see JJ get a shot.
Our team tips it off next Friday against Austin Peay. Will have more on our team later in the week. Very excited about this group we have this year. We have size, we can really shoot it, and we have great depth. This could be a very special year. If Kevin has time for me, will try to get an interview.
Excited for Coach Geoff McDonald and our defending women’s tennis national championship team. Geoff does an amazing job. Also looking forward to our men’s golf under super coach Scott Limbaugh.
Will have more tomorrow after Sunday Night Football.

Should be a spectacle at Bryant-Denny on Saturday night with the No.4 ranked Tide squaring off with the No.2 Bengal Tigers of LSU. These rankings are the College Playoff rankings and they are what matter now. They’ve called these games between the Tide and LSU the games of the century, and this looks like another. Playoff implications should be decided after this one. If the Tide loses, it might be curtains, though not totally, but they would need a lot of help. If LSU loses, it would be tough for them because they also have to go to Ole Miss. The Tide has a tough one at State next Saturday, too. But this is the one that matters right now. Tremendous matchup. Preview and prediction below. AU heads to College Station to face the 12th man and the Texas A&M Aggies. Excellent matchup here. A&M has a young, dynamic freshman quarterback who took over last Saturday and was very impressive against South Carolina. The Tigers need a victory desperately, just for something positive to happen on the Plains.

Clemson is No.1 in the College Playoff rankings, LSU is No.2, Ohio State is No.3 and Bama is No.4. Notre Dame is at five, Baylor at 6, and the Bears will start a much decorated freshman quarterback tonight in place of the injured Seth Russell, who is out for the season with a broken bone in his neck. That’s tough, so it’ll be interesting to see what 59 year old head coach Art Briles (60 on Dec 3rd) and his son,  32 year old offensive coordinator and quarterback coach Kendal Briles, can do with this five-star super freshman Jarrett Stidham, who was the number two dual threat quarterback in the country in the 2015 class behind Texas A&M freshman starting quarterback Kyler Murray. Murray was the number one player in Texas and No. 33 overall in the 247 sports player rankings for 2015, and Stidham was the second best player in Texas and the 38th best player in the country.  Briles and his quarterback Stidham play in the Little Apple, Manhattan, Kansas, tonight against the Kansas State Wildcats. It’ll be a 6:30 PM CT/7:30 PM ET kickoff on Fox Sports 1. Michigan State is No.7 and very much in the mix, as is No.8 TCU, No.9 Iowa, though I think they’re a little bit of a joke, but No.10 Florida is pretty for real. Stanford, at No.11, is a factor. They’re a complete football team. Memphis at No.13 can be a playoff buster if they continue their winning ways. Oklahoma State at No.14 and Oklahoma at No.15 are very much factors. Some huge matchups in the Big 12 in November which will weed teams out with their champion claiming a strong case for getting in the playoff. I think it’ll happen for the Big 12 this season. They’ve got quality teams and good depth. I’d say they’re the second best conference in the country after the SEC.

A lot of excellent matchups in the SEC and nationally with a huge one in Clemson as the No.1 Tigers host the Florida State Seminoles in Death Valley for a 2:30 PM CT/3:30 PM ET kickoff on ABC Saturday. FSU is No.16 in the poll and has an interesting quarterback decision to make which I will discuss below. FSU has had Clemson’s number the last couple of years, so Saturday is huge for Dabo Swinney and the Tigers. Another tremendous matchup with major national implications features No.8 TCU @ No.14 Oklahoma State in Stillwater, Oklahoma. TCU is getting healthier on defense and their offense is dynamic led by their super studs, quarterback Trevone Boykin and wideout Josh Doctson, but OK State is stellar on offense as well, and will provide a stern test for the Horned Frogs. 2:30 PM CT/3:30 PM ET on FOX Saturday. TCU is playing better defense and OK State, while not lockdown on defense, always creates a lot of turnovers. So this one will be compelling.

Here’s a look at this week’s lineup.

There is heavy rain expected Saturday, but it looks like it might dissipate by the end of the first quarter or even the start of the game. Still a wet field and probably slick balls could be a factor. Ball security will be at a premium. The headliners are Leonard Fournette and Derrick Henry. Fournette has rushed for 1,352 yards and 15 TDs. He’s averaging 7.7 yards per carry and 193 yards per game. Henry has rushed for 1,044 yards, 14 TDs,  5.8 per pop and 130 yards per game. Fournette leads the country in rushing and Henry is ninth. Fournette, of course, leads the SEC, and Henry is second. This may be a ground and pound game, though if the rain lets up, Jake Coker and Brandon Harris will need to make plays with their arms. I’m predicting the weather will be similar to the Alabama-Georgia game where there will still be some passing. In these colossal blockbusters with the most physical teams in college football, the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball for both teams will be critical. LSU has an excellent offensive line, so Jonathan Allen, Jarran Reed , A’Shawn Robinson and company will have to be disruptive up front and put pressure on Harris when he passes. Stopping Fournette is job one for the Crimson Tide and then they’ll have to get pressure on Harris so he can’t get the ball to game changing wide outs Malachi Dupre and Travin Dural. Linebackers Reggie Ragland, Ruben Foster and Dillon Lee will have to be big factors in stopping the run and preventing Fournette from making big plays catching swing passes. And LSU loves to run the quick toss sweep to Fournette, so cornerbacks Marlon Humphrey and Cyrus Jones will have to contain and may be called on to tackle that manster at 235 pounds truckin at them with 4.4 speed. The secondary with Eddie Jackson, Geno Matias-Smith at safeties and Minkah Fitzpatrick at the star will be challenged vertically and on the ground to make stops if Fournette gets by the front seven. The defensive line for Alabama will need to get pressure on Harris, so he’s not free to have time to find Dupre and Dural for explosive, take-it- to-duh- house plays. The Crimson Tide defense will be severely tested.

On the other side of the ball, Ryan Kelly and the Tide offensive line will be challenged by a big, physical front for the Bengal Tigers. They need to give Henry space to operate and allow Coker time to find his playmakers, Calvin Ridley and ArDarius Stewart, who were huge in the 19-14 victory over Tennessee two weeks ago. Richard Mullaney has played well for the Tide at the other wide out spot. He’s an outstanding possession receiver. O.J. Howard is playing a bigger role in the offense, and he could really help Coker out in the passing game. LSU is completely healthy in the secondary now with safety Jalen Mills and corner Tre’Davious White being big time NFL prospects.

This is colossal. The line of scrimmage, taking care of the football, running it well and making a couple of explosive plays in the running and passing games will decide the outcome of this one. Kicker Adam Griffith for Alabama and Trent Dominigue for LSU could be called upon to make a crucial field goal or two. I know S will be hesitant to use Griffith. He’s questionable at best.

Will be epic. Like the Tide to get the job done here with the home field and the overall better personnel on defense. But it’ll be a 15 rounder.

It’s been a really tough year for the Plainsmen. A&M got an excellent performance out of true freshman quarterback Kyler Murray last Saturday as he was 20 of 28 for 223 yards, a seven, and no interceptions. And what was really awesome was his running. He ran for 156 yards and another seven. He’s come in for Kyle Allen, who has been struggling with a bad shoulder and has not been the quarterback they wanted him to be ever since the Alabama game, in which he threw four ints, two for pick sixes. But Murray is lethal with his wheels and pretty accurate with his arm. Tre Carson is a pretty good running back. A&M only beat South Carolina 35-28 last Saturday, but it was a well played game. South Carolina is better without Spurrier. Coach Shawn Elliott has put some new life into their program and they’re playing better football. Meanwhile, AU is desperate right now for a victory. Peyton Barber and quarterback Sean White are a little banged up, but they’ll tough it out this week. Jovon Robinson actually ran it pretty well in Barber’s absence. He ran for 91 yards.  Kerryon Johnson can be a stud and so can Roc Thomas, if he can for once stay healthy during a game. Auburn has a running game that can gash A&M, and if White is OK, he can throw it around some. But it’s the defense that’s the issue for the Tigers. They can’t seem to get stops when they need them. The Tigers will play good offense and this will be a good game, but I like A&M to prevail at the end.

Jim McElwain has done a tremendous job with the Gators. They shouldn’t have too much trouble in the Swamp with a reeling Vandy team. Florida is right there in the national picture. They will make it by running the table in the regular season and winning the SEC title game. If they do that, they’re in. That would be an amazing turnaround in McElwain’s first year after four disastrous years under Will Muschamp. Derek Mason’s job security is precarious right now. For him to get another year at Vanderbilt, he’s might need to make some changes on his coaching staff. Maybe not. Not sure if that would  be enough if the Dores lose out the rest of the way in embarrassing fashion. At Florida, Kentucky and A&M at home, and then at Tennessee doesn’t look great with this less than stellar offense. If he gets another year, he’ll need to reassess his coaching staff, besides his offensive coordinator and strength coach. Those two seem like good coaches on this staff. Maybe the safeties coach, too. Graduate assistant for defense Chris Marve, who played very well at linebacker for VU three years ago, is doing a very good job. The Dores are playing pretty good defense. Offense needs to improve. Gators should win comfortably.

Joshua Dobbs is playing outstanding at quarterback for the Vols. Shawn Elliott has done a good job trying to salvage the season for the Gamecocks, and if he could pull this off, he should be right in the mix for the head job next year. State is another hot football team, and Missouri has been dysfunctional this season with the Maty Mauk soap opera. He’s back on the team, but he won’t make a huge difference. Oh, I “misremembered,” as Roger Clemens once said, when asked about roids by a Senate committee or some important group. Mauk is suspended for the season. Apparently due to a confrontation outside a local bar. What a clown. Like Dak and this very good State team to get it done on the road.

Talk about dysfunctional, this Georgia team under Mark Richt is at the pinnacle of dysfunction. Richt is coaching for his job the rest of the season after the debacle in Jacksonville against Florida last Saturday. His starting quarterback situation is game to game. It’ll either be Greyson Lambert or Brice Ramsey this Saturday after Faton Bauta threw four picks against Florida last Saturday. Neither one looks like a great option. This is a tough game for Georgia. I’ll take ’em, but not by much. If Richt loses this, it’s curtains for him.

Clemson is playing great offensive football right now, but I’m not sure their defense is national championship caliber.  They’ve got a great team though. Jimbo Fisher has to make a decision whether he’ll start Everett Golson or Sean McGuire. Golson suffered a concussion two weeks ago and was out last week, and McGuire completed 23-of-35 passes for 348 and three TDs with no interceptions in his place against Syracuse. But Syracuse and Clemson are on totally different levels. Golson does give the Noles the better run option. So Fisher may go with Golson though McGuire does give the Noles the better downfield passing game. But it’ll be too much of quarterback DeShaun Watson and running back Wayne Gallman of the Tigers as they take care of business in Death Valley and move on in their playoff journey. Should be a  pretty stellar game though. This could be more of a defensive game as the weather looks questionable with t-storms around game time.

This should be an awesome offensive football game. TCU is getting healthier on defense, and with Trevone Boykin and Joch Doctson and an improving defense, TCU keeps their playoff hopes alive by surviving in Stillwater in an electric offensive shootout.

True freshman quarterback Jarrett Stidham gets the job done with his exceptional playmakers led by wide receiver Corey Coleman, who has caught 18 TDs on the season to lead the country, and running back Shock Linwood, who has rushed for 974 yards and 9 TDs.

Urb’s running another dysfunctional team like he did in the past at Florida–see Aaron Hernandez. J.T. Barrett is suspended this Saturday for a DUI or whatever the hell the call it in Ohio, and Cardale Jones takes over again at quarterback.  This seems a lot like Florida State dysfunction last year. They may have enough to make it to the playoff, but with the way this soap opera is unfolding, they very well may implode against either Michigan State at home or at the Big House, Michigan,  at the end of the season.
