David pitches a Rembrandt; Pedro goes yard in the clutch; football, bball

DP and Blue Jays en fuego

Pedro doing everything he can to be a full time starter at first for Pirates

Derek leads the team into a huge game in Oxford

It’s just a work of art every time David Price pitches for the Blue Jays. He did it again Monday night as Dave and the Jays defeated the Yankees, 4-2 before 47,648 at a packed out, raucous Rogers Centre. It’s just a fun place to be right now. The Jays ended up taking two of three from the Yankees to extend their AL East lead to three games over the Bronx Bombers. The Jays are now 87-65 as they host the Tampa Bay Rays for a three game home series this weekend. David will be on the hill tomorrow against Chris Archer, a very fine young pitcher for the Rays. Chris looks at Dave as his mentor as Chris was in the rotation with the Rays when Dave was finishing up in Tampa.

The KC Royals are at 89-63, so they have a two game lead over the Jays for the best record in the American League. It would be awesome, first to win the division, and overtake the Royals for the best record in the AL. That would mean home field advantage all the way to the World Series as the American League beat the National League and this year’s All-Star game at Cincinnati thus securing home field for the Series. Stud shortstop Troy Tulowitzki has been out the past two weeks with a crack in his left shoulder blade after a collision with center fielder Kevin Pillar as both were running to catch a pop fly. Tulo has a good chance of being back for an October run. He was throwing and catching three days ago and the next step is to do some fielding and some hitting. He throws and bats right handed. Not positive Tulo will be back for October, but there is a good chance. I’m sure he will do everything he can to get back, because like DP, Joey Bats, Edwin Encarnacion and Josh Donaldson, he is hungry for a World Series title. All the Jays and their fans are because they haven’t even been to the playoffs since 1994, though they did win back to back World Series titles in 1992 and ’93.

David moved to 17-5 on the season with a 2.34 ERA, as he pitched seven against the Yankees, threw 114 pitches with 87 for strikes and 27 for balls, an amazing 3.5 to 1 strike to ball ratio, he gave up only two hits, no runs with one walk and seven K’s. It really was what baseball players refer to as a “Rembrandt.” Dave was hitting the corners and the low zone with his fastballs, he was clocking 95, his change up at 85 has become a go to, and his split fastball (splitter) comes in at 90-91 MPH and is downright filthy. He has developed a pretty darn good curve ball that he throws at 80 MPH with good bite on it. I’m starting to look at the AL Cy Young Award winner here if this keeps up tomorrow and in his last start Thursday against Baltimore. David and Dallas Keuchel of the Astros look to be battling it out at this point. Keuchel’s ERA is 2.51 and his record is 18-8 and his WHIP is 1.02. David’s is 1.07. But it’s neck and neck. David’s WAR (wins above replacement) is 3.5 and Keuchel’s is 6.8 which is something I don’t understand because David’s record at Toronto is 8-1 with a 1.95 ERA. David has 46 walks on the year and 219 strikeouts. Keuchel has issued 47 walks on the year and struck out 203. Keuchel and Dave have both given up 16 homers this season. But if David wins his next two impressively and the Jays win the division and capture the best record in baseball, the Cy Young should go to Dave. Keuchel pitches Sunday at home versus the Rangers. Heck if David pitches well and the Jays win the division and Houston finishes as a wild card or doesn’t make it, David should get it. But it’s too be determined. Keuchel’s last game will be Saturday at the Dbacks, so it’ll come right down to the wire. The Astros are at 80-73 and presently three games behind the Rangers and host the Rangers this weekend in a huge series.

Proud of what David is doing. This could be his year to capture his first World Series title and second Cy Young. David won the Cy Young with the Rays in 2012. He’s like Tom Brady. He just gets better with age. At 30 years old (David turned 30 on August 26th) he’s at the pinnacle of the game. Proud for him. Know Corbs is, too.

Pedro was hugely clutch for the Pirates yesterday as he hit a three run tomahawk shot in the top of the 8th to pull the Pirates up from their bootstraps. The Bucs were down 4-2, until Pedro hit a fastball on a rope over the right central field wall. It was probably 12 feet above the ground, but it was crushed. The Bucs won 5-4 because of Pedro.

He’s now hit 26 homers and has 75 Ribeyes. Pedro and the Bucs in a critical three game series at Wrigley this weekend versus the Cubs. The Bucs are at 93-60 and having a spectacular season and the Cubs are at 89-63 and also having a tremendous season under Joe Maddon’s superb leadership. The Bucs are 4.5 back of the Cards and the Cubs are 7.5 back. The Bucs are 3.5 up on the Cubbies in the Wild Card standings which is hugely important for home field in the win or go home wild card game. If the Bucs can have really good success against the Cubs, the wild card home field could be in good shape and then the Redbirds come to the Steel City for a three game set Monday through Wednesday. The Pirates will have Thursday off, then close out the season hosting the Reds Friday through Sunday. If the Bucs and the Cubs face off in the wild card game, I would bet that Gerrit Cole would start for the Bucs and the awesome Jake Arrieta would start for the Cubs. Arrieta is 20-6 with a 1.88 ERA 48 walks, 220 K’s and an 0.90 WHIP. He’s outstanding, but so is Gerrit. Arrieta will face cagey veteran A.J. Burnett for the Pirates Sunday night on Sunday Night baseball on ESPN at 8 PM ET/7 PM CT. Gerrit pitches today against Jon Lester. Gerrit is 17-8 with a 2.64 ERA, with 42 walks and 192 K’s and a 1.10 WHIP. Lester is 10-11 with a 3.46 ERA, 47 walks and 192 K’s and a 1.17 WHIP. Pedro not in the starting lineup today against Lester, a left hander. That really ticks me off. Hurdle starts Michael Morse, a sizzling .236 hitter with with five home runs and 17 RBIs. Makes total sense Hurdle.  2:20 PM ET/1:20 PM CT for first pitch. Pedro will probably pinch hit later. It’s hard for me to like Hurdle. It really is.

Derek leads the team into Oxford for a tough matchup against the No.3 ranked Ole Miss Rebels, which are 3-0 and on a roll. 7 PM ET/6 PM CT kickoff on duh U (ESPNU). The guys are coming off a 47-7 victory over Austin Peay in a game in which Johnny McCrary 28-of-33 passes for 368 yards, two TDs and no ints. Johnny played an awesome game. Trent Sherfield played a brilliant game catching 16 passes for 240 yards and a seven. Trent wears Earl Bennett’s number 10 and plays like him though Trent is a little faster. Earl was a 4.55 guy and Trent looks like a 4.45 guy. Defense played well, the oline played well. Need to run it well against that tough Ole Miss front led by the awesome Robert Nkemdiche. They’ve got some studs on defense and studs on offense. Ralph Webb, Dallas Rivers,  Darrius Sims, and even Josh Crawford, if he plays and Derek is not redshirting him, need to have good games, Johnny needs to pass AND run well, to give us a shot against the outstanding Rebels. The Rebels are coming off a huge 43-37 victory over the then No.2 ranked Crimson Tide of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. Maybe we’re going to catch them napping and take advantage. A lot of things will have to go right for us to have a shot, but need to be optimistic. We’ll have to defend Chad Kelly and that prolific passing game of the Rebels with standout receivers Laquon Treadwell and Cody Core and some others. Will be a major challenge, but I’m glad will be in this arena. Proud of the team for last week. We’re getting better and better.

No news on football recruiting. We have 10 commits and the guys are all doing well in their senior years. Deuce Wallace is tearing it up at quarterback. Zaire Jones, a four star safety out of Mississippi, along with Joejuan Williams, a four star cornerback out of Hendersonville, Tn are major targets. Trevor Speights, a high three star running back, has us on his radar. We need some running backs. Tre Harbison, a high three-star UVA running back commit is still on our radar. Would love to snatch Tre away from Virginia; get some more payback from baseball, though we handled them last year in the CWS and we’ll handle them next time. We have some other guys who have us listed with very interested, so I’ll keep you posted.

Basketball recruiting is going very interestingly. We have a commit from 89 three star 6’4″ point guard Payton Willis out of Fayetteville, Ark, and we have prioritized James Banks, a 97 four star 6’10”, 230 pound center out of La Lumiere School in La Porte, Indiana. Braxton Blackwell, who has been our major target in this class for the last three years and is a 97 four-star and one heckuva player, is still being heavily recruited by us, but it seems that James is even more of a priority now. Jesse Johnson of Vandy 247 still believes that Braxton will come to VU ultimately. Jerry Meyer, the recruiting coordinator for 247 sports, has crystal balled Braxton to Texas and Shaka Smart, and there are a couple of other CB’s to Alabama and Avery Johnson. But Jesse is confident Brax, who is playing at basketball power Oak Hill Academy in Mouth of Wilson, Virginia this year and is a native of Nashville, will come our way if he makes up his mind sooner than later. Clevon Brown, a 6’8″, 215 four-star power forward is very interested in us. Clevon is from San Antonio. And Richard Freudenberg, a 94, four star small forward out of Munich, Germany, is also interested. My daughter is in Munich this weekend at some music festival as she is studying in London, so I’ll have to get her on the horn with Richard. We need him.

OK, will have more as things develop. Feel really good about DP and Pedro, the football team has a tough test, but I believe strongly that we’ll play well, and basketball recruiting is going very well, and our 2015-16 team should be spectacular. Baseball just keeps on trucking with Corbs. The recruiting is through the roof good. Corbs has the No.1 class for 2015, the incoming freshman according to Perfect Game, we have the number 2 class in 2016 and the number one class in 2017. Will have more on Corbs’ happenings next week. Sonny’s been struggling some lately. He pitches tonight against the Giants at Oakland. Sonny is 13-7 with a 2.72 ERA 57 walks 162 strikeouts and a 1.08 WHIP. He’s been getting hit lately.  The A’s have been a disaster this season, and I think Sonny is just burnt out from all the losing. Hopefully, general manager Billy Beane can improve this team and if he sticks with Bob Melvin, Melvin can get this team back where they’re accustomed to being, in the thick of things in October. I hope that for Sonny. He’s got a couple of more years with the A’s before he becomes an unrestricted free agent, so Beane really needs to improve this team. They’ve gotten a lot of stud minor leaguers with all the trades Beane made at the deadline, so maybe they can pull a Cubs and turn it around next year.

JMatt and the Eagles in a must win game this weekend at the Jets in the Meadowlands. Eagles are 0-2 and have to have this one. Jay Cut on the shelf right now with a hamstring injury. Should be back in two weeks. Bears 0-2 as well. Need to get a W at Seattle this Sunday if possible. Will have more on Casey Hayward and Sean Richardson of the Packers and Andre Hal with the Houston Texans next week. All three are playing well. Will find out more about Wesley Johnson and Kenny Ladler and some other guys who are still trying to make it in the National Football League.

Ready for Coach Mason and the team to do some work tomorrow night in Oxford.

Some key week 4 matchups including AU-State

Gus (above) goes with Sean White (below) to try and turn the offense around

Sean White

Sean White gets the start for the Tigers in a huge tilt at Jordan-Hare vs Mississippi State and Dak Prescott. Alabama, coming off a tough loss at home to Ole Miss, tries to regroup and take care of business against La. Monroe and head to Athens next Saturday with momentum. Florida hosts Tennessee, and there are some key  national games along with some pretty decent games involving the SEC as well. Here’s a look at this week’s action.

People (who study Vegas) are starting to like Mississippi State after Auburn’s disappointing performance at Baton Rouge last weekend. Gus decided to make a change at quarterback going with Sean White, the redshirt freshman. Jeremy Johnson is a great kid and at some point may get it together, but wasn’t getting the results his team needed. Sean is a former Under Armour All American MVP in 2013  at that elite high school camp where the best high school quarterbacks in the country compete. Along with that he was named the MVP of the Elite 11 high school quarterback camp in 2013, where the best 11 high school quarterbacks in the country compete. He was a four-star recruit and is very accurate from the reports I’ve read. But Auburn needs to get the ground game going, too, and the defense HAS to play better. I’ve heard that Carl Lawson is out for the year with a fractured hip and Joshua Holsey one of AU’s starting corners/nickel back, is also out for the year. So Will Muschamp will have to find ways to slow Dak and the State offense down, and White will need to be a leader in the huddle and be accurate with his throws. And AU must get production from Peyton Barber, freshman Kerryon Johnson and if Roc Thomas or Jovon Robinson can play to really give the Tigers a ground game boost. Looks like Barber and Johnson are the go-to guys right now and they look pretty solid. Barber is tough between the tackles and has pretty good speed. Johnson can get on the edge and make house calls. He’s going to be excellent. Roc Thomas, who I really like, is having trouble staying healthy. But he has a ton of talent. Robinson hast lived up to his five star reputation yet, but there is time to get going.  White’s mobility is pretty good. He runs a 4.6 40. State is still a solid football team and almost knocked off LSU at home two weeks ago.So this is going to be a tough, physical football game. Auburn will have to run the football, have White make some plays in the passing game, and play much better on defense. I see the Tigers improving this week and getting it done at home, but in a hard fought SEC war.

I know last week was disappointing for Alabama fans, but the team did well to keep coming back was right there at the end. I was pretty impressed with the way Jake Coker competed. He made a couple of bad mistakes passing the ball, but he really fought as did the whole team. Would like to see Lane Kiffin give Derrick Henry and Kenyan Drake more opportunities to run the ball. I’m sure S is feeling that way, too. With the Tide getting behind, I guess Kiffin felt he needed to move the ball through the air. This is still a high quality football team and there is a lot of season left. A much needed solid victory over La. Monroe will propel the Tide into Athens next Saturday with positive momentum. The secondary needs to keep improving. There are really good athletes back there, so there is plenty of potential. The offense needs to run the ball well and Coker needs to have a good game for a confidence builder. Would like to see the Tide use tight end O.J. Howard more in the passing game. Every time he touches the ball something good happens. The Tide needs to get Henry and Drake going and the defense needs a solid outing against a team which knocked off Arkansas in 2012 and the next week almost beat Auburn. They also upset Alabama in Saban’s first year in 2007. But the Tide will be fine here as it prepares for a blockbuster next Saturday at Athens against them Dawgs at 2:30 PM CT/3:30 PM ET on CBS.

Florida suspended a couple of players yesterday,  backup quarterback Treon Harris and star cornerback Jalen Tabor, so that’s an issue. I do like the Gators’ starter, redshirt freshman Will Grier. He’s a potentially a good SEC quarterback and he showed more signs of it last week in a huge Gators victory at Kentucky. Tennessee lost a tough one at home versus Oklahoma two weeks ago after leading of 17-0 in the second half losing to a good Oklahoma team in overtime, 31-24. The Vols are good on offense and are led by super running back Jalen Hurd and potentially excellent quarterback Josh Dobbs, but with the potential for some questionable weather conditions, I see this as a knockdown, drag out defensive, running game kind of battle where the team that takes care of the ball better will win. I’m liking what Jim McElwain is doing so far in Gainesville. He’s a really good coach, and has brought some toughness to the Gators mentality. Tennessee can sure run it, but I like the Gators’ defense better than the Vols and I believe in Grier and Coach McElwain.

The Rebels may be a little banged up from last week and may have a little hangover from their huge victory at Tuscaloosa, but they’ll be fine against the Dores. The Rebs take care of business and get ready for a big trip to Gainesville next Saturday for a 6 or 6:30 PM CT start on either ESPN, the Deuce or the SEC Network. The Rebels play on the road at Florida, @ Auburn, @ State– to end the regular season, and play A&M, LSU and Arkansas at home. So they have a pretty navigable schedule if they can stay healthy. That’s a big if and LSU and A&M will certainly be major challenges. I think the Gators next weekend could give them a challenge. And if Auburn can get it together, they could knock off the Rebels. But they’re going to be  fine this week against a Vanderbilt team that is improving, but not good enough at Oxford.

I like this A&M team; they’re a factor in the West without a doubt. My question about them is still on defense. Do they have a championship defense? I don’t see it right now, though it’s gotten better under new coordinator John Chavis, who took his talents from Baton Rouge to College Station. I see a blowout in Jerry country. Bret Bielema is self-imploding at Arkansas, and injuries haven’t helped.

Gary Patterson has had all kind of issues with suspensions and injuries. It’ll cost him Saturday. The 7 point underdog Red Raiders are coming off a 35-24 backside kicking of Arkansas. I like them to pull the upset at Lubbock.

No.18 Utah 34, No.13 Oregon 31

7:30 PM CT/8:30 PM ET, FOX

Gus Johnson, Joel Klatt, Molly McGrath

Like the power running game led by Devonte Booker and the tough defense of the 11 1/2 point underdog Utes to pull off an improbable upset in Eugene. Not convinced the move to bring in Vernon Adams Jr. is going to work out that well for Oregon. Adams Jr lit it up at Eastern Washington last season, but had a chance to win the game at Michigan State two weeks ago and overthrew a wide open receiver from 35 yards out that would been the game winner in East Lansing and would have kept Oregon in the thick of things in the playoff hunt. Jeff Lockie, the backup quarterback now, had an awesome spring game, and Mark Helfrich should have stuck with him instead of taking a risk and kind of a punk move to bring in Adams from Eastern Washington as a transfer fifth year player and put Lockie, a hard working, redshirt junior  quarterback, on the bench. Lockie played last week as Adams was hurt and completed 23 of 31 passes for 228 yards and two TDs against Georgia State. That isn’t a real formidable foe, but this guy has done great work every time I’ve seen him play. But Helfrich will probably stick with Adams Jr.  The Ducks have to win Saturday night, but I’m going to take the Utes, which are 3-0 and can really make a statement with a victory at Autzen Stadium.

No.16 Arizona 34, No. 9 UCLA 31

7 PM CT/ 8 PM ET, ABC

The Bruins are very talented, but they lost their best player, linebacker Myles Jack, to a season ending knee injury last week, and they’ve had some upheaval with suspensions, and barely got by a solid, blue collar BYU team by a point at home last Saturday night with Jack in the lineup. Jack actually sealed the victory with an interception at the the end of the game. The Bruins find a way to blow it during the season, so I like the 3-0, three point underdog  Wildcats at home to pull this off.

Arizona State 35, USC 30

Can Cyrus Jones (above)( and the Alabama secondary slow down LaQuon Treadwell (below)and the Ole Miss passing game? That's one of the main keys to the game

Laquon Treadwell

Should be epics in Tuscaloosa and Baton Rouge this Saturday with the Tide hosting the strong Ole Miss Rebels under the lights at Bryant-Denny and the Tigers heading into Death Valley for an afternoon showdown with The Hat and LSU. The Dawgs and Gamecocks face off between the hedges and the Gators head to Lexington to play a resurgent Kentucky Wildcats team. Should all be classics. There is plenty of other SEC action and some key national match ups on the slate tonight, Friday and Saturday. Here’s a look at the action with predictions.

Ole Miss is 1-35-1 in the state of Alabama in its history. The Tide has definitely got the Rebels number at Bryant-Denny. But this is a much better Ole Miss team than the ones in the past. It’s a better team than last year’s and they were a pretty good football team in 2014. Ole Miss is clicking in every aspect of the game. The offense, led by quarterback Chad Kelly, the Clemson transfer, has put up 70+ points in each of the first two weeks against UT- Martin and Fresno State respectively. Ole Miss defeated UT Martin, 76-3, in week one and Fresno State, 73-21, last Saturday. While those teams aren’t nearly in the class of what the Rebels will face this Saturday night, this team is a juggernaut offensively. And Robert Nkemdiche and the defense is physical, opportunistic and extremely fast on the perimeter. It is hard to run on the outside against this defense. Lane Kiffin is going to have to find a way for Derrick Henry and Kenyan Drake to keep the chains moving on the ground. The Alabama quarterback situation was pretty tragic last Saturday versus Middle Tennessee. The Alabama defense is good, but the secondary can still a question mark.  Ole Miss’s running game is fine, but Jaylon Walton is a small back and will have trouble getting through the front seven of Alabama. Jordan Wilkins is pretty good and a bigger back, but Ole Miss is going to have to get a lot done through the air a lot of the time. They’ll have to run to keep the defense honest, but Kelly and his receivers will have to find ways to move the ball and get it in the end zone.  The question marks for Alabama are the quarterback play and the play of the secondary. Can Jake Coker or Cooper Bateman get the job done under center? It’ll probably be Coker who starts, but if he struggles, Bateman could very well come out of the bullpen to relieve him. And can the defensive backs stop Kelly and superstar wideouts Laquon Treadwell and Cody Core. That’s a major factor in this game. Alabama has the coaching pedigree advantage with quite a few of the coaches having won three national championships. But Ole Miss has a good staff, too. These are veteran coaches who know how to make the offense go and how to neutralize opposing offenses, for the most part. This is going to be quite a football game. I don’t like Ole Miss’s record in Bryant-Denny, or in the state of Alabama for that matter, so it looks like on paper the Tide will win at home. But right now, I think the Rebels have a better football team.

Auburn really struggled on both sides of the ball last week versus Jax State. winning 27-20 in overtime. They struggled on both sides of the ball in the second half versus Louisville in a 31-24 victory at the Georgia Dome in week one. Jeremy Johnson has thrown five interceptions to three touchdowns, and has not become the quarterback Auburn fans expected him to be before the season started. The defense is giving up an average of 421 yards of total offense per game through the first two games. Leonard Fournette is waiting to go off against the Tigers’ defense. Gus and his crew are going to have to think of ways to get the ball in the end zone because LSU is going to ground and pound on the Tigers all afternoon and it will be hot, so the Auburn Tiger defense could wear down as the game moves on. LSU backup tailback Darrell Williams is pretty electric as well. I just don’t see any way that the Auburn Tigers can pull this out the way Johnson and the defense are playing right now. Like the Bengal Tigers at home.

Nick Chubb pounded Vanderbilt for 189 yards last week. The week before he ran for 120 yards and two sevens against La. Monroe. The sophomore looks unstoppable. He is. It’ll be too much Chubb for the South Carolin defense  to handle. And the Georgia defense is becoming elite under coordinator Jeremy Pruitt. The question mark for Georgia, like many other SEC teams, is quarterback. Can Virginia transfer Greyson Lambert throw the football when the Dawgs need to get something done in the air? He has the receivers. This could determine if the Dawgs have a really good season or an elite season. The Gamecocks will probably stack the box and make Lambert beat them. The Dawgs line is good though, and Chubb will get his yards and could very well take one or two to the house.  But Lambert may have to make some plays with his arm. I still think that the Dawgs ground game with Chubb, Sony Michel and Keith Marshall will carry the day for the Dawgs.

I’m not sure why Florida is favored in this game. They barely got by East Carolina at home, 24-17, and Kentucky went into Columbia last Saturday night and knocked off South Carolina, 26-22. I’m not buying the Gators yet and I’m pretty bullish on the Wildcats. The Wildcats running game with Boom Williams (24 carries, 245 yards, one TD, 10.1 yards per carry) and Jojo Kemp (16 carries, 112 yards, one TD, 7 yards per carry) will be too much for the Gators’ defense to stop. Patrick Towles is a pretty good quarterback and the Wildcats’ defense is much improved under Mark Stoops. Jim McElwain looks like he’s got a pretty good quarterback in Will Grier, but he keeps trying to use two quarterbacks, putting in Treon Harris who can’t throw a lick. Like where Kentucky is much more so than Florida.

This could be considered a reach by a lot of people, and it is somewhat, but I love the way quarterback Tanner Magnum has gone into Nebraska and won on a last second Hail Mary and beaten a solid Boise State team at home by 14 with a game winning TD pass in the last 45 seconds followed by a pick six by their safety. I like this defense and running game too. A solid BYU team goes into the Rose Bowl and pulls off the upset.

Bama, AU, and some huge games in week 2

Dak Prescott (above) leads his Mississippi State team at home versus Leonard Fournette (below) and LSU

Leonard Fournette

Alabama and Auburn should be fine this Saturday, though Bama is playing against a pretty explosive offense. Auburn should be in good shape to move on to LSU next weekend in a classic at Death Valley  at 2:30 PM CT/3:30 PM ET on CBS on Saturday afternoon. But both teams want to get better in certain areas, actually all areas, but some areas more specifically. There are some are some major games this Saturday including a couple in the SEC and an SEC versus a Big 12 power in Knoxville. Here’s a look at this weekend’s action.

Bama played well last weekend defeating then No. 20 Wisconsin, 35-17, in Dallas. Derrick Henry rushed for 147 yards on 13 carries and 3 TDS. He was terrific. He’s slimmed down in his lower body and is a lot quicker. He’s primed for a huge year. Kenyon Drake looked like the Kenyon Drake we saw before his broken leg injury at Ole Miss last year. Kenyon ran for 77 yards on 10 carries and caught two passes for 48 yards. Quite a one-two punch the Tide has working at running back. The running game looks superb. Freshman Damien Harris had nine carries for 30 yards in mop up duty later in the game, so he got experience. He needs to keep developing, but he could help give Henry and Drake a blow some and he’s got immense talent. I thought Jake Coker was outstanding as well, completing 15-of-21 passes for 213 yards which included a beautiful roll out touchdown pass to Robert Foster. He didn’t make any mistakes, no ints. He took a couple of sacks at the beginning of the game, but really settled in and played excellent football for Lane Kiffin and S. He looks like the guy to me. Cooper Bateman came in later and did OK, but I like Coker to run this offense. It’s good to get Bateman reps to keep him sharp if Coker was to get injured, but Coker needs to be the guy running this offense. Loved what I saw from him. The offensive line played very well. The defense played well, though the secondary needs to  work on their coverages some more, particularly cornerbacks Cyrus Jones and Marlon Humphrey. Both are good players, but each one had a pass interference called on them. When corners turn their backs on the quarterbacks and just look at the receiver they can get called for interference pretty frequently. It’s a tough position and Cyrus and Marlon are going to be very good players this year. It’s sometimes impossible not to just focus on the receiver. It’s hard to get turned around sometimes especially if you’re playing against a good wr. Cornerbacks just have to have really quick instincts and great anticipation. There are going to be mistakes sometimes at that position. But both Cyrus and Marlon are really good players. The front seven looks outstanding. This is a championship level defense if they can just get the secondary clicking. The Tide will face a pretty explosive passing game Saturday. The Blue Raiders dropped 70 points on Jackson State last Saturday. While Jackson State is not a strong team, Middle Tennessee quarterback Brent Stockstill, a sophomore and Middle Tennessee head coach Rick Stockstill’s son, completed 24 of 30 for 348 yards, four TDs and one int. Receiver Ed Batties caught eight passes for 123 yards and two TDs. Nine different receivers caught passes. Their defense only gave up 14 points to Jackson State, so they’re pretty decent. The Tide secondary will be tested. The Tide needs a good game here as they matriculate towards a huge game at home versus a very good Ole Miss team next Saturday night at 8:15 CT on ESPN.

Auburn had kind of an uneven performance last week. Jeremy Johnson did not have the game that Auburn fans expected him to have against Louisville. He was 11-of-21 for 137 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions. In fairness, Louisville had a pretty good defense and were a ball hawks in the secondary, but Johnson did not perform up to expectations. He needs to get a lot better this week against Jax State, an FCS school that is coached by John Grass, who’s had success in high school in Alabama and now in college. Jax State made it to the quarterfinals of the FCS playoffs last season. They beat Chattanooga last week, 23-20. So Johnson and the running backs need to have a good game this week. Peyton Barber played really well in relief of the banged up Roc Thomas and Jovon Robinson, running for 115 yards. Roc only carried the rock six times for 27 yards, and Robinson ran it just two times for 16 yards. AU needs to get Roc going. The offensive line needs to block better and Auburn needs to cut down on the penalties. The line is talented and physical, they just need to enforce their will this week and establish themselves. The defense made some good plays last week. Tray Matthews, who got hurt later in the game but appears to be OK this week, had a nice interception and return on the opening play from scrimmage, and Justin Garrett’s 82 yard fumble return for a TD was a tremendous play. But they let Louisville freshman quarterback Lamar Jackson run for 106 yards, mostly in the second half. He was unstoppable on the ground at times. He was good, but AU needs to get better on stopping these athletic quarterbacks. So a lot to improve on, but this team does have plenty of talent. It just needs to be realized. This week would be a big boost for the Tigers as LSU looms next Saturday afternoon in Baton Rouge.

This is a really interesting matchup. State had an excellent year last year and pretty much dominated LSU at Death Valley on a Saturday night, winning 34-29 in 2014. But the final score was not indicative of the game as State dominated. LSU made a late run, but State was the much better team that night. State defeated an improved Southern Miss team, 34-16, in Hattiesburg last Saturday night. Dak Prescott played a solid game. State and Dak will have their home town fans with their cowbells blasting.  LSU is highly talented, but hasn’t played a game as their game last Saturday night at home against McNeese State was cancelled due to weather and they’re still not really clear on their quarterback situation. State will need to hold LSU tailback Leonard Fournette somewhat in check, but I think they’ll get the job done and capture a huge SEC West victory.

Kentucky is a quality football team. Quarterback Patrick Toles threw for 257 yards and three touchdowns last week in a 40-33 victory over a pretty decent Louisiana Lafayette team. He’s coming into his own as a passer. Stanley “Boom” Williams is an outstanding running back. He rushed for 135 yards last Saturday, which included a 75 yard TD run in UK’s opening drive. Jojo Kemp didn’t have a great game, but he’s also an excellent running back. South Carolina is at home, but I like the Wildcats to come into Williams-Brice and pull off the upset.

This could get out of hand early. Nick Chubb should run wild along with his awesome backups Sony Michel and Keith Marshall. Georgia needs to get an established quarterback. Greyson Lambert looked pretty good last week against Louisiana Monroe in a 51-14 Dawgs victory, and looks like the leader in the clubhouse over Brice Ramsey right now. Coach Richt and his staff will get a better idea this Saturday. But once the Dawgs get an established quarterback, they’ll be one of the best teams in the country. They already are. Jeremy Pruitt’s defense looks stout. This team has serious playoff possibilities and a chance to win the SEC if they can stay healthy. If one of the two, Lambert or Ramsey, can establish himself this Saturday, this is a complete football team and an outstanding one at that. The Dawgs do have to go to Tennessee on Oct. 10  after facing  Alabama the week before at home (Oct. 3rd), so those are two tough ones, as Tennessee looks for real to me, and the Tide is stellar. They also have to go to Auburn and they’re at Georgia Tech, so they’ve got to navigate some tough ones. But if the Dawgs can keep their team relatively healthy, especially at running back,  this looks like a special year in Athens. It’ll be a long afternoon for the Commodores.

The Sooners have a really good offense with a good quarterback in Baker Mayfield and a good backfield and wide outs. They have a pretty decent defense, too. They’re solid. But I really like this Tennessee offense with emerging superstar quarterback Joshua Dobbs and the awesome  Jalen Hurd at running back. This is the year of the running back in the SEC, there are a lot of great ones, and Hurd is right there at the top of the list. Alabama transfer Alvin Kamara looks like he’ll be a key player backing up Hurd. He has a lot of talent, but ran into trouble under Coach Saban, and left the team. He’s good though. UT has excellent receivers and a solid offensive line. Their defense is improved, but maybe not great yet, and that may keep them from winning the East. But this is a very good football team. Butch Jones has it going in Knoxville. Like the Vols to get the job done at home.

I watched both these teams play last week, and Michigan State has another solid, fine football team under super coach Mark Dantonio with a pretty good quarterback in Connor Cook.  Oregon has incredible speed. Running back Royce Freeman ran for 180 yards last week and three touchdowns against Eastern Washington and has both the power to run over would be tacklers and the wheels to take it to the house. Oregon throws another two of three running backs at you and new quarterback Vernon Adams, Jr. looks like he’s settled in as an FBS quarterback so far, though he hasn’t ever played in this hostile of an environment as he’s going to play in Saturday night at East Lansing. The Eastern Washington transfer has good talent, and his arsenal around him is electric. Adams will do enough and Freeman and the other playmakers will be just too explosive for Michigan State.  Michigan State will also score some points against a defense that is a question mark right now, but I like Oregon to be a little more explosive than the Spartans Saturday night in prime time. Expecting a great game.

Alabama over Georgia

College Football Playoff teams:

Ohio State, Alabama, TCU and Oregon

Ohio State

Too much talent not to put them in there. The team is loaded and Urb can be annoying, but they’re coached up well. The only thing that could cause them to stumble is complacency. Repeating is hard. But with running back Ezekiel Elliott and all the weapons on offense with whoever plays quarterback, Cardale Jones, who is battling some migraines right now or J.T. Barrett,  along with a pretty stout defense and a Big Ten schedule that looks very navigable, I like the Buckeyes to be there in January playing in the semifinals.

Alabama

While quarterback is somewhat unsettled, the defense is through the roof good and with the running game of Derrick Henry, Kenyon Drake and super talented five star freshman Damien Harris, the quarterback should be able to manage the game well and get the ball to the talented receiving corps led by Robert Foster and ArDarius Stewart. This defense has a chance to be the best in Nick Saban’s nine years at Alabama. I watched Kirby Smart in an interview before the season and he looks charged up about this group. Just to give you an example of the talent this group has, Jonathan Allen was a five star recruit out of Virginia in 2o13 and I watched film on him in high school and he just destroyed opposing running backs and quarterbacks. He would actually lift them up and throw them to the turf. He’s a beast. But he’s second string behind massive A’Shawn Robinson. He’ll play a lot and be an excellent player for the Tide at defensive end, but Robinson is a heckuva player as well. Just disruptive, game changing players who are difference makers up front. On the other side of the d line, De’Shawn Hand was a five star recruit in 2014 out of Virginia and he’s third string behind Jarran Reed (the starter) and Dalvin Tomlinson. Reed is terrific. That shows how deep this defensive line is. Senior Darren Lake will be the nose guard and the Tide is three deep there with a couple of younger, talented players behind him in freshman Daron Payne and sophomore Josh Frazier. The four linebackers are superb in Dillon Lee, the awesome Reggie Ragland, the powerful and massively hard hitting Rueben Foster (who S wants to tackle better so he won’t get another concussion), and the always reliable and steady Denzel Devall. The secondary is the area that needed to improve the most and they have. Cyrus Jones comes back as a senior at one corner and Marlon Humphrey, the redshirt freshman who was five star two years ago out of Hoover High School in Birmingham, has taken over at the other corner spot. Eddie Jackson will be the strong safety and Geno Smith is the free safety. There is plenty of talent behind the starters. Look for sophomore Tony Brown to play a lot at corner and freshman five star Minkah Fitzpatrick is a guy they’re really high on.

It’s just a matter of the quarterback playing solid and also playing well. Coker looks like the safe pick at QB, Cooper Bateman the most explosive, and Alec Morris a reliable, solid passer. I like Bateman’s 4.5 speed and athletic ability. I liked when Buffalo Bills coach Rex Ryan went against the grain on Monday and picked Tyrod Taylor as his starter over the experienced E. J. Manuel. Taylor has been nothing short of spectacular in the preseason and Ryan didn’t make the safe choice, but went with the guy who had the hottest hand in the preseason. That’s the way I feel about Bateman over Coker and Morris. He’s the most dynamic athlete, his accuracy has really improved, and he can make things happen with his wheels. He’s the most like Blake Sims of the three and you need a mobile quarterback who can make things happen, a guy who can gain 10  to 12 yards on a scramble when receivers aren’t open or the pocket breaks down. My choice is Bateman, but Coker may start against Whisky. Should be an interesting development during the game to see how S and Lane Kiffin use their quarterbacks. We could see all three against Whisky. S did this in 2011 with two quarterbacks, A.J. and Phillip Sims, until A.J. took over in the game against Penn State and took it from there leading the Crimson Tide to two straight national titles in 2011-12. So there is time to figure that out if that’s what S and Kiffin choose to do. I think the Tide will be fine against Wisconsin, so the quarterback competition may continue into week two against Middle Tennessee State (3 PM CT SEC Network), and not be solidified until game three against Ole Miss at Bryant-Denny, Sept. 19th, an 8:15 PM CT/9:15 PM ET kickoff on ESPN.

The kicking game looks solid. Punter J. K. Scott is All-American like. He can flat out crush the ball. He’s a game changer at punter and there are not too many punters in the country you can say that about. Adam Griffith is back from battling an injury that impaired his kicking last year, so he should be a lot better. Cyrus Jones, Chris Black and Oregon State transfer Richard Mullaney are 1-2-3 on the depth chart at punt returner. Not sure about Cyrus as a punt returner, haven’t seen enough on him to know how good he will be. But he is a stellar athlete, and Black was a five star in high school and I’m expecting him to step up this year and have a big year at wide receiver. I’ve heard good things about Mullaney, the transfer. He could be a real factor in the passing game. And Cam Sims is another player that, when he gets healthy from his torn MCL and LCL in his knee, and it sounds like he’ll be back sooner rather than later in what could be the most remarkable recovery from a major knee injury in recent college football history, with his 6’5″ frame could be a huge asset in the passing game.

On kickoff return, the explosive Drake and Stewart could take some to the house for the Tide. Very explosive, game changing players as kickoff returners.

So I love this team. They’re really outstanding. Quarterback needs to be settled by Ole Miss and the running backs need to stay healthy, but overall this is a very exceptional looking football team. The offensive line will be anchored by center Ryan Kelly, who’s not only an excellent, physical player, but also a highly intelligent leader who can make the calls on the line and really help an inexperienced quarterback much like Barrett Jones did for A.J. McCarron for two years. By the way, Barrett is listed as the starting center for the St. Louis Rams on their depth chart. Good decision by the Rams. Alabama players are all over the NFL. It’s remarkable really.

The Tide will also have Cam Robinson, all 6″6, 326 pounds of him anchoring the left tackle spot and massive guys all over the front. The o line should be outstanding with good depth. So this is definitely a playoff team. The tricky part is there are three teams with bye weeks before they play the Tide. The Tide goes to A&M on Oct. 17th after a bye week for A&M. Alabama hosts Tennessee October 24th  after a bye week for them and LSU plays the Tide after a bye week on Nov.7th at  Bryant-Denny. But Bama does get a bye week before they play LSU, too. But I’m from the school of thinking that it is good to keep playing. I actually think Alabama has an advantage playing teams coming off a bye week because the Tide will be game ready and those teams will have not played for two weeks. That’s an advantage in my opinion. The only area where that could be a factor is injuries. They’re always the X factor. An October 3rd date at Athens to play Georgia will be a tough one, but one I like the Tide to prevail in, but in a hard fought, highly physical contest. Of course, the big one will be Nov.28th, at Auburn. The Tigers are going to be outstanding on offense and much improved on defense. I was tempted to pick the Tigers as SEC champs, but they’re not extremely deep on defense though they will be good and much improved under Will Muschamp. Gus’s offense should be superb with the awesome Jeremy Johnson, Roc Thomas and Duke Williams and a ton of playmakers alongside and behind them and an outstanding offensive line; maybe the best in the country. Wow, that’s a dominating o line at Auburn. So it’s a tough call and it’s on the Plains, but this Tide defense and a solid, if not spectacular offense, will barely prevail in this year’s Iron Bowl in what should be an epic. I like Auburn to play in a New Year’s Six Bowl though, the Sugar Bowl is highly doable for the Tigers,  and have an excellent season. I see Bama going 12-1 or 13-0 and AU to go 11-2. So I’ve got Bama over AU barely in my SEC title game and playoff.

TCU and Oregon

I also like TCU and Oregon. TCU returns 16 of 22 starters and are loaded. They have a hyper-explosive offense led by superstar quarterback Trevone Boykin, and a SEC-style defense which will make them the cream of the crop in the Big 12. Not having a championship game is problematic for TCU, but if they take care of all their business during the regular season, I see them getting to the playoff. I also like Oregon. I watched Oregon’s spring game and they look as electric as ever on offense. Add to this dynamically loaded, playmaking offense Eastern Washington quarterback transfer Vernon Adams, who led the FCS in passing efficiency last year with a 183.13 rating, which was even better than Marcus Mariota’s 181.75, and Adams threw for 3,483 yards and 35 TDs against eight ints. He’s a stud and he will make the transition to FBS pretty seamlessly. He may struggle a little at first, but I’m a believer in him and this dynamic offense to win the PAC 12 title and make the playoff. Running backs Royce Freeman and Thomas Tyner are spectacular. And the Ducks’ defense will be good enough to get them to the playoff.

There will be plenty of outstanding bowl match ups as well. I never underestimate the value of bowl games. You see some really good football played in bowl games. They’re still a staple in college football and hopefully always will be even with the playoff. They should be.

So my playoff is:

Orange Bowl: Alabama vs. TCU

Cotton Bowl: Ohio State vs. Oregon

But we’re just starting the season, so without any further ado here  is a look at the games in one of the most exciting times in sports; the start of the college football season. All the rankings are the coaches’ poll rankings.

Wisconsin is solid and Sports Illustrated reported that quarterback Joel Stave is over the “yips” he had last year throwing the ball in which he threw nine TDs and 1o interceptions, and he’ll be pretty good in the passing game, according to SI. But the Badgers, though they should be good in the Big Ten West, are not in the same class as Alabama. S and Kiffin should get more clarity on their quarterback situation and the Tide will roll here.

A lot of sports writers and sportscasters are bullish on the Tigers and I’m in agreement. Quarterback Jeremy Johnson will be superb, and so will running back Roc Thomas. Duke Williams looks like he’s back in the coaches good graces and he can really be terrific if he keeps his act together. The o line anchored by Ole Miss transfer Austin Golson at center, Alex Kozan at right guard, who returns from missing a season last year due to injury, the inspirational  Shon Coleman at right tackle, the tough as nails Braden Smith at left guard,  and the massive Avery Young at left tackle, looks like it could be the country’s best. They are huge, physical and deep up front. The defense will be much improved. I like the Tigers having Carl Lawson back from injury at defensive end and Montravius Adams should be a beast at defensive tackle along with Lawson. I like the linebacking corps led by Kris Frost and Cassanova McKinzy and I’m ready to see sophomore Tre Williams have a breakout year. He’s a co-starter along with McKinzy and Frost right now. The highly talented Justin Garrett will man the other linebacker spot. The secondary looks very good with potential All-SEC corner Jonathan Jones and Michigan transfer Blake Countess manning the corners and Jonathan Ford and former Georgia standout Tray Matthews at safeties. That’s a good secondary, though they’re not that deep. I like this Tigers defense overall, it’s just depth at linebacker and the secondary and all over the defense that keeps me from picking the Tigers to win the SEC. The offense is certainly going to be explosive. Ricardo Louis should have a big year at receiver returning kicks along with Ford. Marcus Davis or Jason Smith will return punts. Davis looks explosive and Smith is supposed to be but there’s not much intel on either one. Daniel Carlson will be an excellent kicker and Kevin Phillips will punt. Not sure about Phillips. Will have to see him perform in game one.

Neck brace has worked on Auburn since the day after getting blasted 37-14 by Georgia in the Belk Bowl in Charlotte on Dec. 30th. But his workaholic preparation for Auburn will not be enough for Louisville.  Too much Roc Thomas, Jeremy Johnson and an explosive offense for the Loiusville defense to handle. Like the Tigers to take care of business in the Georgia Dome, then take care of business against Jax State at home a week from Saturday, Sept. 12th, then hit the road for a 2:30 PM CT CBS kickoff at Death Valley to face the LSU Tigers in what should be a classic. Like Gus and the Tigers to have a huge season and it’s very close for them to be in the SEC championship game and the college football playoff. They’re definitely right there.

Another marquee game for the SEC against a Power 5  conference opponent. Arizona State is for real. Kirk Herbstreit picked them in his playoff along with Ohio State, LSU and Baylor. Not buying that, but they’re a very explosive, well coached football team. But I like the new Texas Gunslinger, Kyle Allen, to throw it all over the field against the Sun Devils. Allen looks poised to be a breakout player in the SEC and in the country. Kevin Sumlin has recruited extremely well the last three years and has talent all over the roster. He brought in John Chavis from LSU to be his defensive coordinator which was an outstanding hire. Chavis will make this defense more aggressive, more physical and a top flight unit in the next couple of years. There is a lot of returning young talent on that side of the ball and Sumlin and his offense are always going to be good just like Gus’s is. While Arizona State could have a very good year and possibly win the PAC 12 South division, though I like UCLA there, I don’t think can beat the Aggies, but it’ll be quite an offensive game. It should be outstanding. Like Allen and A&M to throw it all over the field, run the ball some and play enough defense to come away with a hard fought victory over the Sun Devils.

This is a tough opener for Ball Coach against an up and coming UNC team under Coach Larry Fedora, who was really good at Southern Miss and is in his third year at Chapel Hill. SC has flown under the radar in the offseason because everybody has been saying Ball Coach is going to hang it up soon. If this year doesn’t go well, that could happen, but I don’t think it’s going to happen. The Gamecocks will be much improved, they’ve got a good young quarterback in Connor Mitch, an all world receiver in Pharaoh Cooper, and plenty of playmakers on offense.  Jon Hoke has come to Columbia after a long stint in the NFL to co-coordinate the defense with Lorenzo Ward, who really needed some help after last season’s defensive disaster. Hoke was Spurrier’s defensive coordinator at Florida in 2000-01 and helped the Gators lead the SEC in total defense. He’s proven in the NFL too, so this is a big pickup for Ball Coach. This can be a pretty good football team. Can they win the East? They have to go to Georgia, but they’ve proven they can beat the Dawgs on the road. They’ll have to go to Tennessee and the Vols are much improved. They have to go to A&M,  to Missouri, and they play LSU at home, so they have their work cut out for them. But this can be a football team that can make some noise in the East if they can stay relatively healthy. Like Ball Coach and his team to get it done here.

Derek Mason says his team has forgotten about 2014, turned the page and are re-energized for 2015. He made coaching changes in the offseason, hiring James Dobson from Nebraska as his strength coach, Andy Ludwig from Wisconsin as his offensive coordinator, he hired a couple of young coaches to coach the wide receivers and safeties respectively, and he took over the defense as its coordinator. They were all good moves. I watched practice two weeks ago and the players were impressive looking physically. There is a lot of talent on this team, particularly on defense, and Coach Mason can really coach some defense. As Stanford’s defensive coordinator, he helped Stanford shut down Marcus Mariota and the Oregon offensive attack two years a row in upset victories for the Cardinal over Oregon. He knows what he’s doing on defense and he said he will be making all decisions on going for it, when to use a timeout, and when to go for two, etc… Ludwig is tough, smart and brings that mentality to the Vandy offense. I see a real change in this football team. They are going against a high powered offense though in the Hilltoppers, which averaged 44 points last year and 374 yards passing per game. They beat an undefeated Marshall team last year, which came into the game 11-0, 67-66, and won their bowl game, the Bahamas Bowl, 49-48 over Central Michigan. Their sixth year quarterback, Brandon Doughty, completed 68% of his passes last year, 337-of-552 for 4,830 yards, 49 touchdowns and only 10 ints. They’re going to really give the Vandy defense a major challenge. But I think the Vandy defense is up for it and can do enough along with a better offense under Ludwig to get the W, which would be huge for Coach Mason.

Like the Dawgs to definitely take care of business here and Nick Chubb to go off as he makes his early Heisman statement. It’s too early to worry about the Heisman, but Chubb is such an explosive, electric, game changing player. He just runs with reckless abandon and can run over people around them, cut on a dime and definitely take it to the house. He ran for 1,594 yards and 14 touchdowns and put on some clinics last year. Against Louisville in the Belk Bowl he ran for 266 yards and two touchdowns. It was spectacular. He’s spectacular. He’ll have Sony Michel and a rejuvenated Keith Marshall behind him for a powerhouse, take it to the house, running game. Grayson Lambert, the Virginia transfer, will get the start at quarterback for the Dawgs. Mark Richt may be in a similar situation as Nick Saban in that this could be an audition at qb with Bryce Ramsey being another quarterback who has plenty of talent, but not a lot of experience. Richt will play them both and see who’s better as he prepares his team for a trip to Vandy a week from Saturday at 2:30 PM CT on CBS  and a home game against South Carolina two weeks from Saturday. Defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt will have the Dawgs playing more stellar defense this year, too. Believer in Pruitt.  This could be a special year for the Dawgs.

The Rebels shouldn’t have any problem here. They’re auditioning quarterbacks, too. Chad Kelly, former Buffalo Bills quarterback Jim Kelly’s nephew, he was kicked off the team at Clemson and transferred to Ole Miss, will get the start. But Hugh Freeze said the quarterback situation is “not set in stone.” So here’s another SEC team with a quarterback question that will be answered either in the first or second game. They have a really good defense led by stud defensive end Robert Nkemdiche, and their offense has playmakers. They should have a good season if their quarterback works out.

I’m expecting a good game here. Va Tech wore out the Buckeyes last year in Columbus, 35-21, and they’ve got a really good defense this year under long time cagey veteran defensive coordinator Bud Foster. The Buckeyes will squeak this one out in Blacksburg.
