The Rest of Rivalry Saturday

Dak and State try to keep their playoff hopes alive in Oxford at the Egg Bowl

Last week: 17-5; Overall: 157-59 (73%)

I’ll post weather information if it’s a factor

No.4 Mississippi State (10-1, 6-1) @ No.19 Ole Miss (8-3, 4-3)

I trust Dak Prescott a lot more than I trust Bo Wallace. Ole Miss holds the series lead at 56-26-5, but State has won four out of the last five. The Bullies just need to get the job done in Oxford and hope the committee believes in them enough when they make their final decision on Sunday, December 7th @ 11:45 AM CT/12:45 PM ET on ESPN. In my opinion, if State gets it done at Ole Miss, they should be in. Not playing in the SEC Championship game though, if Alabama beats Auburn, which I’m expecting, could make it real stressful come Selection Sunday with teams like Ohio State, TCU and Baylor lurking right behind them.

Will Muschamp would like nothing better than to finish his brief career as Gators coach with an upset over Jameis and the Gators and knock the Noles out of the playoff. He and his team will give it a very good effort and come close, but the Noles will pull it out once again like they seem to do every time out.

The Ducks may face a stiffer test than expected in the Civil War. If they win in Corvallis, the Ducks will move on to the Pac-12 championship game next Friday, Dec. 5th, @ Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Caly @ 8 PM CT/9 PM ET on FOX  as they close in on the playoff. They still have their work cut out for them tomorrow night though and will have some pretty quality teams as potential foes in Pac-12 title game. If UCLA beats Stanford, it’ll be the Bruins vs Oregon. If the Bruins lose to Stanford, it’ll be the winner of Zona-Zona State, which will be played today. The Ducks beat UCLA earlier this year on the road, 42-30, but lost to Arizona, 31-24, @ home. The Ducks oline was really banged up and unsettled against Zona. They’ve gotten it together with the return of their left tackle, Jake Fisher.Quarterback Marcus Mariota may not be as effective as it’s going down in the 20’s tomorrow night. Should be a good game to check out.

Offense:

Bama:

The Tide will feature quarterback Blake Sims (187-301, 62%, 2,676 yards, 20 TDs, 4 ints, 5 rushing TDs), running backs T.J. Yeldon (758 yards, 6 TDs), Derrick Henry (682 yards, 7 TDs) and Tyren Jones (198 yards, 2 TDs) and wide receivers Amari Cooper (90-1,349, 11 TDs)  and DeAndrew White (30-319, 2 TDs). Injuries don’t look to be a problem overall. Cam Robinson will be back at left tackle; the offensive line will be in tact. ArDarius Stewart, who has emerged as a receiving threat for the Tide, could be questionable with a strained knee ligament as will tight end Brian Vogler, but the rest of the team looks good to go.

AU

Auburn is led by quarterback Nick Marshall (136-228, 60%, 1,859 yards, 15 TDs, 6 ints; 731 yards rushing, 11 TDs), running back Cameron Artis-Payne (252-1,405, 11 TDs), wide receivers Duke Williams (38-609, 5 TDs) , Sammie Coates (25-511, 2 TDs) and Quan Bray (30-334, 3 TDs). The offensive line is led by center Reese Dismukes. Auburn looks pretty  healthy on offense with the return of Williams at wide out.

Analysis:

Both teams have really good offenses, but Blake has been more consistent than Nick this year. If T.J. Yeldon and Derrick Henry combine for a good game, they can be more effective than Artis-Payne can against a rushing defense that allows only 84 yards per game on the ground. Lines are about a wash, though I might give a slight edge to the Tide with their overall consistency this year, particularly pass blocking. Amari Cooper is the ultimate weapon at wide receiver while Coates and Williams are elite athletes, as is Cooper, and Cooper’s been much more of a game changer than Coates and Williams this season.

Advantage: Tide

Defense:

Alabama is second in the country in scoring defense at 14.5 points allowed per game, second nationally in rushing defense at 84.5 yards allowed, 3rd in passing efficiency defense, 5th in total defense, allowing 283 total yards, and 39th in Red Zone defense. Alabama is tied for 69th nationally in turnover margin and tied for 74th in interceptions secured with 9. Auburn is 40th in the country in scoring defense, allowing 23.5 points per game, 38th in rushing defense, allowing 142.5 yards per game, 51st in passing efficiency defense, 52nd in total defense, allowing 375 yards per game, and third in the country in Red Zone defense. Auburn is tied for 41st nationally in turnover margin and is tied for eighth nationally in interceptions made with 16.

Alabama:Linebacker Reggie Ragland leads the Tide with 83 tackles and is tied second on the team with 8.5 tackles for loss behind Xzavier Dickson who has 9.5. Defensive end Jonathan Allen also has 8.5 TFL. Landon Collins is second on the team in tackles with 75 and leads the team in interceptions with three. Trey DePriest is third on the team in tackles with 64.

Auburn: Linebacker Casanova McKinzy leads the Tigers in tackles with 80, and also leads the team in tackles for loss with 10. Safety Jonathan Ford is second with 75 tackles and linebacker Kris Frost is third with 70 and eight tackles for loss. Jonathan Jones leads the team in interceptions with five.

Analysis:

While the Tigers defense can get turnovers and are good in the Red Zone, the Tide has come into its own on defense in the last two to three weeks and are playing pretty much lockdown right now. It’s going to be hard for AU to run the ball on the Tide. They’re going to have to do something through the air and that could work as the Tide secondary has been vulnerable at times this season. Auburn’s defense has been pretty questionable overall this season.

Advantage: Alabama

Special Teams:

Alabama has had problems with its kicker for the past four to five years, and this year is no exception. Adam Griffith is 12-of-18 on field goal attempts with a long of 47. He did hit a key one at the end of regulation in an overtime victory at LSU. He’s 5-of-6 from 20-29 yards, 3-of-5 from 30-39 yards, and 0-1 from 50 yards and over. Not bad, not great. He might be needed Saturday, so he’ll have to really home in on his kicks. J.K. Scott is an excellent punter averaging 46.8 yards on 43 punts. Christion Jones, Cyrus Jones and Landon Collins are handling punts and kickoff returns. Christion hasn’t been as prolific returning kicks and punts as  he was last year, but could be in store for a long one, even a house call on Saturday. Kick and punt coverage units for the Tide have done a very good job lately. Ruben Foster is a beast on kickoff coverage.;

Auburn

Daniel Carlson is 12-of-16 on field goal attempts. He’s 6-of-7 from 20-29 yards, 2-of-2 from 30-39, and 4-of-7 from 40-49 yards. His long is 46. Carlson also punts and has averaged 41.7 yards on 35 punts. Corey Grant returns kickoffs and averages 23.3 yards per kick return with a long of 32. Not Corey’s best this season, but he’s capable. Meanwhile, Quan Bray is averaging 18.1 yards per return and has made two house calls this year with his longest being a 76 yard return for a TD against La Tech in a game in which he lit it up accounting for three TDs for the Tigers. To go along with his punt return for a seven, Bray caught a couple of sevens, one for 44 yards and another for 37 yards. Kickoff and punt coverage teams are “naut baad” as  Hanz and Franz say to ARodg. “You’ll tank us latuh.”

 Advantage: Auburn

Final Analysis:

With all that data and advanced metrics information,  the Tide has the home field and what looks like the better football team this year. Rivalry games can be a little overrated. The team that has the better talent usually wins. I don’t see how the AU defense can stop  the Crimson Tide offensive attack, and the Alabama defense is rugged against the run so CAP and Nick are going to have some trouble running the ball. AU may use Grant and Roc Thomas some more to see if they can get some explosive plays and try Ricardo Louis on some jet sweeps though the Tide is tough on end arounds. Gus is going to throw out the kitchen sink offensively in this one, and AU will probably get some pretty good pass plays against the Tide secondary, which can be its Achilles Heel at times. But Alabama’s offense and a stout defense are going to be too much for the Tigers to overcome this year. The Crimson Tide clinches the SEC West title with a victory at home and head to Atlanta as they are getting closer to clinching a berth in the College Football Playoff.

Texas has been playing very well lately as Charlie Strong’s process is kicking in. They’re physical, play excellent defense, run the ball very well and quarterback Tyrone Swoopes has become more accurate passing the ball. With that said, I don’t think they can stop Horned Frogs quarterback Trevone Boykin. He’s outstanding and a game changer. I see this one close, but the Horned Frogs clear this hurdle and march on toward their goal of making the playoff.

The Aggies defense is so bad that they won’t be able to stop LSU’s running game and play action passing. LSU is much better than A&M on defense. Both teams had somewhat of disappointing seasons with inexperience at quarterback,  youth on defense at LSU, and just bad defense on A&M’s part, but at least both are going to bowl games. Like the Bayou Bengals to get the job done in College Station.

Arkansas is playing well, but it’s highly questionable on whether starting quarterback Brandon Allen will play. That’s a problem for the Hogs. Mizzou is not as good as Georgia and it’s almost a travesty if they get in the SEC championship game over the Dawgs, but I see them getting the job done here at home particularly with a banged up Arkansas quarterback. Brandon’s younger brother, Austin, a redshirt freshman,  got some playing time last week against Ole Miss when Brandon got hurt. He will start if Brandon can’t go. Maty Mauk doesn’t overwhelm you with his passing, but he does what his team needs him to do to get the W. And their running game is pretty solid with Russell Hansbrough and the explosive Marcus Murphy. Like Missouri to move on to the SEC Championship game with a win here. Brandon Allen is a possibility for the game, but still like the Tigers.

Basketball looks very promising, Bears grab a key victory; tough night in Starkvegas

This group led by Damian Jones (center) and Luke Kornet, are an extremely exciting fun basketball team to watch
Luke Kornet has improved exponentially from last year. Luke had shown flashes of great ability last year, but last night he showed that he is a force for our team this  year. In an impressive 78-46 victory over Tennessee State at Memorial, Luke went 10-of-11 from the field, starting out with a couple of flushes and then draining three trifectas. And the triples were just pure swishes. Luke finished with 24 points and seven boards. Damian Jones added 13 points and eight boards. Damian and Luke can kind of work off of each other, setting the other guy up for scoring opportunities and their rebounding will be essential. Really like what we’re doing on the boards. This is the best rebounding team I’ve seen us have in quite some time. Our young guards are good rebounders. Our freshmen are multi-talented. These guys are ready to be big time performers this season. Love what I saw from Riley LaChance and Wade Baldwin IV. Really like point guard Shelton Mitchell as well. Riley was two-of-5 from triple and Wade was two-of-two. We were 9-of-19 from deep. We are an efficient three-point shooting team. We take plenty of threes, but we are making more with this young group and Luke. Wade dished out 10 assists and Shelton added seven dimes. We did have 17 turnovers, but Tennessee State was a pretty quick, athletic team and we’re going to have issues with turnovers some with a young group of backcourt players. Our two other freshmen, Matthew Fisher-Davis (MFD) and Jeff Roberson, both have some injury issues. MFD is battling a foot issue, and Jeff was sick. But they’re both good players and they’ll get back to full strength soon. I thought James Siakam did some good things. James is just getting back into form as he had a family member pass away recently and had been away from the team. We will need James as the season progresses. He brings great defensive, rebounding and some offensive punch to the front court. Josh Henderson and Shelby Moats both contributed. If Josh can get confident that his knee isn’t going to be an issue (he’s torn a ligament in his knee the past couple of years), he can be a big help with his size at 6’11”, 240. Josh is also a highly skilled player who can score and board. Shelby can too, and he brings good leadership to our group. We play Norfolk State tomorrow night @ home @ 8 ET/7 CT on SEC Network Plus. It’s part of ESPN3. I’ll have a report Wednesday. Then we go to the Big Apple Friday to play Rutgers, and if we win, we play the Virginia-LaSalle winner on Saturday night. Friday night’s game is @ 7 ET/6 CT on the NBC Sports Network. Saturday night’s game is too. Like this group a lot. Can we make the tournament? Yes, and the future is unlimited with Luke, Damian, our freshmen and the guys coming in next year along with Cornell transfer shooting guard Nolan Cressler. But I really think we can be playing in the middle of March with this group. These freshmen are such good kids and they want to excel. They’ll keep growing and improving and they all have outstanding ability. Really excited about the direction of our program starting this season.

Bears won a hard fought game yesterday over the Tampa Bay Bucs at Soldier Field, 21-13. Jay played pretty well completing 17-of-27 for 130 yards,  a seven to Alshon Jeffrey and no ints. The team played well overall, particularly the defense. They intercepted Bucs qb Josh McCown twice and recovered two fumbles and also sacked McCown five times. Bears moved to 5-6 and play a colossal game on Thanksgiving Day at Detroit against the Lions at 12:30 PM ET/11:30 CT on CBS. If the Bears can beat the Lions, which lost yesterday to the Patriots 34-9, the Bears can become a factor once again in the wild card race. The Lions are now 7-4, so it’s an absolute must win game for the Bears. Should be a classic. Defense played extremely well yesterday. The Packers are 8-3 and they don’t look like they’re coming back  to the pack, so the Bears need to focus on getting back in the wild card picture. Have to get it done on Thursday in Motown.

Jordan Matthews with six receptions for 77 yards yesterday against the Tennessee Titans. JMatt really doin work. Love where JMatt is at and Chip Kelly and the Eagles love him. JMatt came out last week and defended Derek. I’m glad JMatt did that. JMatt is a good Vanderbilt man and so is our coach. Derek needs the support right now because we’re going through a tough time. But we have UT at home this Saturday (4 PM ET/3 PM CT on the SEC Network) and we need to get the W. Certainly attainable.

Derek was still his usual upbeat self after the Mississippi State game. He was disappointed, but still optimistic about the game this coming Saturday. Hopefully we can turn it around for the seniors and send them out on a high note. State is a top four team in the country. I have them number three in my playoff ranking this week. If they win @ Ole Miss Saturday, and Oregon struggles against Oregon State, State should move up to No.2. My top four now are: 1. Alabama, 2. Oregon 3. State and 4. FSU. Very interesting weekend coming up with huge rivalry games all over the map. It’s been an amazing season in college football, and while our team has had its share of struggles, Derek will turn it around. If we can just beat UT and get some more momentum going into recruiting that would be huge. We’ve got a good class right now with 12 guys. We just added offensive lineman Darion DeBrossard, a 6″5″, 320 tackle out of Shellville, Georgia. Love Darion’s size. Should develop into a good player. Would love to see us add about seven or eight more. Our headliners in this class are four-star cornerback Donovan Sheffield and four-star linebacker Josh Smith. I really like what I’ve seen from high three-star quarterback Kyle Shurmur. Kyle  has put up some excellent numbers. With Kyle, Johnny, Patton and Wade, quarterback will be a strength for us next year. Also, really like high three-star running back/linebacker commit Dare Odeyingbo in this class. He is a stud running back at 6’2″, 242, and can be a stud linebacker. He’s powerful, fast and can house it at any time. We’ll see what Derek decides to do with Dare next year and in the future. With Ralph Webb and Dallas Rivers and Dare, and also commit Josh Crawford, we should be pretty good at running back next year. We may add another rb in recruiting. Still heavily involved in Nashville Pearl-Cohn running back 5.7 three-star Ke’Shawn Vaughn. Ke’Shawn will be visiting Saturday for the UT game along with 5.5 three-star running back Marcus Marshall, 5.7 three-star defensive tackled Drayton Carlberg and 5.9 four-star defensive back Marvell Tell. Carlberg is committed to Oregon, but hopefully we can flip him on Saturday. High three-star defensive end commit Caleb Peart is a stud as well. Please keep the faith. Derek will get it done. He’s a great man, great coach and great representative of Vanderbilt University.

Baseball had the Black and Gold series last week and they’re out of the country playing in the Dominican Republic right now. Looks like we’ll have a stellar starting rotation with Carson Fulmer, Walker Buehler, Tyler Ferguson and maybe lefty Phlip Pfeifer.  Those guys will bring the heat. Bullpen will develop right now, when spring practice starts in January, and throughout the season. We have Hayden Stone, of course, who is an amazing pitcher, but we’ll need to build up some depth. Really like Ben Bowden and John Kilichowski out of the pen. Both are leftys and had good years last year. I expect excellent years out of both Ben and John. Hitting and fielding should be excellent led by shortstop Dansby Swanson, left fielder Bryan Reynolds and right fielder Rhett Wiseman. We should be solid at catcher with Jason Delay and Karl Ellison returning for their sophomore campaigns. We can win the conference, though as always, it will be incredibly competitive. LSU should be really good, as should South Carolina, Florida and Ole Miss. There are some other good teams. There’s no lay-up in the league. Looking forward to getting started in January.

But let’s win a football game Saturday, get this basketball team cookin, get football recruiting cookin, and start back getting ready for spring football and have another spectacular baseball season. Will keep you posted on all VU stuff.

The Saints have to win tomorrow night. They’ve lost two straight at home after winning 20 in a row at the friendly confines of the Superdome. Drew and company have got to get some momentum going if they want to be even a part of the postseason. I think they get it done tomorrow night over Flacco and the Ravens.

My Final Four this week as we head into a huge rivalry week with massive playoff implications:

1. Alabama

Has done nothing to prove otherwise. Could be some injury concerns heading into the Iron Bowl, but most of the players will be available, if not all of them. Auburn next Saturday night at 6:45 PM CT/7:45 PM ET on ESPN.

2. Oregon

Marcus Mariota makes one of his final Heisman statements in a tricky game for the Ducks next Saturday in Corvallis against rival Oregon State. Oregon State knocked off Arizona State at home last week, so Oregon is in for a tussle. The Ducks have to survive this one to stay in the playoff mix.

3. Mississippi State

State overtakes Florida State with a blasting of Vandy at home. My brother in law, who is a Mississippi native, got on me for not putting State in my top four last week. He was right. State belongs in the playoff right now with a huge one against Ole Miss in the Egg Bowl coming up next Saturday in Oxford at 2:30 PM CT/3:30 PM ET on CBS.

4. Florida State

Just getting by, but getting by nonetheless. Have the Gators next Saturday @ 2:30 PM CT/3:30 PM ET on ESPN. If they get by the Gators, they’ll play Georgia Tech in the ACC title game with a chance to compete for another national title with a victory in that game.

Injuries mounted up a little yesterday, but most of the players, if not all, will be ready to go

Week 13 in this majestic college football season

Nick Perry and the stellar Tide defense takes care of business tomorrow and gets ready for the big one
The Crimson Tide and the War Eagles in what look like lay-ups on Saturday with both teams at home. A couple of key games in the SEC, one in Knoxville with the resurgent, re-charged Tennessee Vols hosting Missouri in a must win game for Mizzou. If the Tigers lose to the Vols, Georgia goes to the Georgia Dome on December 6th to represent the East in the SEC Championship game (3 PM CT/4 PM ET on CBS). Missouri has to win this week and at home next week versus Arkansas to claim the East title. They will face either Alabama, Mississippi State or Ole Miss depending on the outcomes for State this Saturday against Vandy, Ole Miss’s outcome at Arkansas, the Iron Bowl next Saturday in Tuscaloosa (6:45 PM CT/7:45 PM ET on ESPN) and the Egg Bowl next Saturday pitting State @ Ole Miss at 2:30 PM CT/3:30 PM ET on CBS). So the Crimson Tide, the Tigers, State, Missouri and Georgia all need to take care of business this weekend. UT needs to win this Saturday or next Saturday at Vandy to ensure a bowl game. Ole Miss @ Arkansas should be a stellar game as well. The Rebels aren’t out of it yet either. If they can win this Saturday and next Saturday against State @ home, and the Tide happens to stumble against Auburn, the Rebs will go to the Georgia Dome on Dec.6th. Arkansas won its first SEC game in 17 tries last Saturday impressively, 17-0,  over LSU. Georgia in action, along with South Carolina and Florida as well. A key national game @ the Rose Bowl as UCLA hosts USC with major Pac-12 South title and national implications involved  for the Bruins. Here’s a look at this week’s action.

To me the story is to get the running game tuned up for Auburn. Derrick Henry needs to have a good game. While he’s very talented, he hasn’t performed as well as expected this year. He has battled some injuries, so that could be the issue. S will want to get T.J. Yeldon some work in and see if Henry can do some damage. Maybe looking at Altee Tenpenny or Tyren Jones would be a decent idea. Defense needs to keep playing at the high level they have established. Last week was extremely impressive defensively. The Tide needs to take care of business and get ready for the Tigers and also keep their No.1 ranking in the playoff  in tact.

AU needs to figure out something on defense. Samford has played well this year under former Auburn Heisman Trophy winner Pat Sullivan (1971 Heisman), so the Tigers need to figure out some way to stiffen up their defense. Ellis Johnson could be in trouble here if the defense doesn’t improve tomorrow and next week in Tuscaloosa. But Auburn should be OK here.

Tennessee has suspended starting linebacker A.J. Johnson for an alleged assault on a woman, so that could be an issue. Their center is questionable for the game, but Coach Butch Jones says they have other options up front. UT quarterback Joshua Dobbs has been playing lights out since becoming the starter. Dobbs is an Aerospace Engineering major. His class load goes as follows: Monday, Wednesday and Thursday: Thermodynamics, Circuit and Electro-Mechanical Components, Fundamentals of Physics. Tuesday and Thursdays–Matrix Computations, Intro to Business Management, and Computer Solution of Engineering Problems. I’ve heard of some smart football players, but this young man tops them all. I guess he can handle football IQ as his intelligence quotient is off the charts. He’s good too. Arkansas will use the same formula they’ve used all season, run it till the opponent proves they can stop the run, and use play action passing off the run. Dawgs need to keep winning for national hopes and they need help from UT Saturday or Arkansas next week. Freshman Sony Michel is back at running back for the Dawgs and that will really boost an already explosive running game led by dynamic freshman Nick Chubb. Michel was a five-star out of high school like Chubb and can motor. He’s a house call guy, even a little faster than Chubb. It’s tough to lose Todd Gurley for the season, but if Chubb and Michel stay healthy, this team is very dangerous. Could be a heckuva’ n SEC title game with Georgia vs. Alabama.

Just win out baby

Here are my top four teams for the playoffs right now. The committee may not agree, but this is what they should do in my opinion.

1. Alabama (9-1, 6-1 SEC West)

Wins at LSU, which is difficult no matter what kind of team they have and they had a lot of momentum and a ton of young talent coming into the game, and the win over then No.1 Mississippi State, a high quality opponent puts the Tide at the top of the rankings. The Tide has earned the top spot. Blake Sims is making clutch play after clutch play. Safety Nick Perry was all over the field on Saturday afternoon versus State  with an interception tackle after tackle. The defense has reached its potential, and is playing at an extremely high level. Up next: Western Carolina @ home (3 PM CT/4PM ET on the SEC Network), Auburn @ home, Saturday, Nov. 29, @ 6:45 PM CT/ 7:45 PM ET on ESPN. The Tide controls its own destiny. Win out and they should be the No.1 seed in the playoff. If they beat Auburn, they will play in the SEC Championship game vs. Georgia or Missouri. Missouri has the lead in the East at 5-1. Georgia has finished its conference season at 6-2. Missouri plays @ Tennessee  this Saturday (6:30 PM CT/7:30 PM ET on ESPN), then faces a rejuvenated Arkansas team @ home, Friday, Nov.28 @ 2:30 PM CT/3:30 PM ET on CBS. Georgia has lost Todd Gurley for the season with a torn ACL, but freshman running back Sony Michel should be back either this Saturday for Charleston Southern (11 AM CT/Noon ET on the SEC Network), or a week from Saturday, Nov. 29, @ 11 AM CT/Noon ET vs. Georgia Tech @ home on the SEC Network. The Dawgs have a tough one against Tech. Georgia Tech is 9-2 and is trying to win the Coastal Division of the Atlantic Coast Conference. Duke is 4-2 and defeated Ga.Tech, so if Duke wins out, Duke will play FSU in the ACC Championship game. Duke has games remaining vs North Carolina this Thursday at 6:30 PM CT/7:30 PM ET on ESPN, and Saturday, Nov. 29, vs Wake Forest. Both are at home. So Tech is an interesting team and will give the Dawgs some problems. Interesting scenarios in the SEC East. For Bama it’s win out and they’re in the playoff. If Bama beats Western Carolina and Auburn and were to stumble against the East team, they could still make it in. Incredible stuff going on. Bama’s my top team right now.

2. Florida State (10-0, 7-1 ACC Atlantic)

A friend of mine called me Friday after I made my change in my pick  from Florida State to Miami and said it was a very “bold” pick. Too bold as ti turned out. FSU just keeps getting it done. You can’t knock them for their on-field performance. You can for their off field performance, but you can’t question them on the field. When they need the big play, Jameis goes to super wide receiver Rashad Greene or super tight end Nick O’Leary and they’ll just get the job done every Saturday. With games versus Boston College and Florida at home, the Noles are in very good shape heading into the ACC Championship game in Charlotte versus Duke or Georgia Tech on Saturday, Dec.6th @ 6:45 or 7 PM CT/7:45 or 8 PM ET on ABC. I’m learning my lesson: don’t pick against the Noles, at least through the ACC Championship game, unless Duke or Georgia Tech could pull off a miracle. So the Noles are looking pretty primed to be in the playoff. But they’ll face some really good teams in the playoff if they make it there.

3. Oregon (9-1, 6-1 Pac 12 North)

Oregon does not have an easy path to the playoff, but they are certainly a playoff worthy team right now. They have games remaining versus Colorado at home and Nov.29th @ Oregon State in Corvallis (game time and network to be determined), one of the toughest places to play in the Pac-12 if not the country, to play. Just ask Arizona State, which very well could  have gotten their playoff hopes derailed at Corvallis last Saturday, as they lost 35-27 to the Beavers. If Oregon loses at Corvallis, or, by chance, to Colorado (highly unlikely), they would still represent the North in the Pac-12 title game, so their hopes wouldn’t totally be dashed, because Stanford is second in the North at 3-4 , so there is no chance for Oregon not to represent the North in the title game, (Friday, Dec.5th @ 7 PM CT/8 PM ET on FOX). But they HAVE to win. Marcus Mariota is playing Heisman Trophy-winning football, though Wisconsin running back Melvin Gordon really put himself right there with Mariota with a 408 yard, 4 TD performance against Nebraska in a 59-24 Wisconsin victory. So Mariota has his work cut out, and, more importantly, his team does. If Oregon gets by Colorado, which they should, it will be huge in Corvallis on Nov. 29th.  If they can get through those two, they will play the winner of the South Division in the Pac-12 Championship. That’s a wild one in the South with USC leading the division at 6-2, and Arizona, Zona State and UCLA at 5-2. USC plays UCLA this Saturday @ the Rose Bowl @ 7 PM CT/8 PM ET on ABC, and Arizona plays Arizona State at Zona on Friday, Nov. 28 @ 2:30 PM CT/3:30 PM on FOX. If UCLA beats USC @ home and then beats Stanford the following Friday @ home, UCLA will win the South. If USC wins out and Arizona State wins out, Arizona State will go by virtue of beating USC at SC earlier in the season on a Hail Mary pass at the end of the game. If Zona wins out and USC wins out, USC would get the nod. If Zona wins out and UCLA wins out, UCLA would win the South as UCLA beat Zona. As you can see there is a lot to be determined. It’s pretty convoluted, but that’s how it would shake out. If UCLA wins out, they go. Same for Arizona State. SC and Zona would need to win and get help. SC from Zona and Zona from UCLA.

4. TCU (9-1, 6-1 Big 12)

TCU did not have an overly impressive victory over Kansas Saturday, winning 34-30, but they won, and their re’sume’ is an impressive one with a victory at West Virginia, which was red hot at the time, and a blasting of Kansas State at home, 41-20. There may have a been a letdown against Kansas, and Kansas has been playing better after letting Charlie Weis go earlier in the season. And the game was on the road at Kansas. But the Horned Frogs have a tricky one a week from Thursday, Thanksgiving night, Nov. 27th, as they travel to Austin to face the suddenly resurgent Texas Longhorns. Texas has won three in a row with wins @ Texas Tech, @ home against West Virginia (33-16), and on the road @ Oklahoma State (28-7). Texas looks for real right now. Will be tough for TCU as the Longhorns would like nothing more than to wreck TCU’s season. The game is @ 6:30 PM CT/7:30 PM ET on FOX. It’s a must watch.

Numbers 5-12

5. Baylor (8-1, 5-1 Big 12)

Baylor is very close. With victories over Oklahoma State, Texas Tech and Kansas State all at home, the Bears would win the BIg 12, and would have a very good argument to get into the playoff  as they beat TCU, 60-58, on Oct. 11th. So the committee would have a major decision to make. But the Bears still have work left as everybody else does, but if they win out, it could be very interesting. I’d go with TCU if they could beat Texas. To me that would be more quality wins, and Baylor’s victory over TCU was at home, and they were trailing by 21 points before rallying late in the fourth. I know Baylor won the head to head, but Baylor also lost to West Virginia in Morgantown the next Saturday, Oct. 18, 41-27, and TCU defeated West Virginia at Morgantown on Nov. 1, 31-30. That would be controversial, but I guess I give the nod to TCU. Still, that is to be determined by the committee and by me too.

6. Ohio State (9-1, 6-0 in Big Ten East)

An impressive victory over Michigan State @ East Lansing November 8th, 49-37, has vaulted the Buckeyes right back into the playoff conversation. Games left @ home against Indiana and Michigan. Looks like they’ll take care of business, but an early season loss to Virginia Tech, which, at the time, was playing well, and just got a very good road win over Duke. So it’s not as bad a loss as you’d think, but could possibly be costly for the Buckeyes. And Ohio State could very well face Wisconsin in the Big Ten Championship game at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis (indoors), so that’s no bargain either. With Melvin Gordon going off, Wisconsin is a dangerous team. So the Buckeyes have plenty of work left and they need some help.

7. Georgia (8-2, 6-2 SEC East)

Highly impressive blasting of Auburn between the hedges, 34-7, and looking more like a contender for the playoff. Todd Gurley unfortunately suffered a season ending torn ACL in his knee, but Nick Chubb is playing spectacular football, and Sony Michel, the Dawgs’ other freshman phenom, should be back very soon. And if Michel can’t make it back before the end of the season, Brendan Douglas is a pretty good option to give Chubb some breaks and tote the rock some too. He’s good too. Quarterback Hutson Mason is playing well now, the line is playing lights out, the wide receivers are excellent, and the defense is getting it done under stellar coordinator Jeremy Pruitt. Games left against Charleston Southern @ home and Georgia Tech @ home. Then, if Missouri stumbles @ Tennessee or @ home to Arkansas, Georgia has a shot to make it to the playoff if they can win the SEC championship game in Atlanta on Saturday, Dec. 6th (3 PM CT/4 PM ET on CBS).

8. Mississippi State (9-1, 5-1 SEC West)

Still not totally out of it. They have Vanderbilt @home and Ole Miss on the road. Ole Miss will be very difficult for the Bullies, so they have a tough road ahead of them. The Ole Miss game is Saturday, Nov.29th, @ 2:30 PM CT/3:30 PM ET on CBS. They’re going to have to win out and get some help from Auburn.

Other teams in consideration

9. UCLA (8-2, 5-2 Pac-12 South)

10. Missouri (8-2, 5-1 SEC East)

Win out and they win the East. If they lose to either Tennessee on the road or Arkansas at home, Georgia would overtake them as the Dawgs beat them head to head. If they win out and  win SEC title game, they could have a pretty good argument to at least be considered for the playoff. Two SEC teams is not out of the question. Could be Alabama, Georgia or  Alabama, Missouri. If one of these two East teams were to win out and beat Alabama in the title game if Bama can get by Auburn, they can make the playoff along with Alabama.

11. Wisconsin (8-2, 5-1 Big 10 West)

The Badgers have to win out and get a lot of help. Games left @ Iowa and  home vs Minnesota. Not easy. Iowa is 7-3 overall, so they’re not total pushovers. If Minnesota beats Nebraska this weekend @ Nebraska, the Wisconsin-Minnesota game would be for the Big Ten West title. That is scheduled for the Big Ten network on 2:30 PM CT/3:30 PM ET on Saturday, Nov. 29th. Nebraska is not totally out of it, but would need to beat Minnesota this weekend and hope Wisconsin loses twice.

12. Arizona State (8-2, 5-2 Pac 12 South)

Going to need to win out (Washington State @ home, @ Arizona, 2:30 PM CT/3:30 PM ET, Friday, Nov. 28th, on FOX) and get some help from USC over UCLA to get to the Pac 12 title game and make a case for themselves. Of course they’d have to beat Oregon in the Pac 12 title game to be considered, so they have a ton of work left.

Basketball, baseball really doin’ work; Football developing

Please keep the faith; Derek will get it done

Damian Jones is an emerging superstar nationally

Wow, basketball and baseball are doin’ so much work it’s got my head spinnin’. It’s terrific stuff from both programs. Baseball is baseball. We’re the defending national champions with a chance to repeat, and we have the number one recruiting classes for 2015 and 2016 according to Perfect Game. Our ’14 class, the group who will be freshman this season, are solid. We were ranked number two in the country until several guys opted to go to the big leagues. Still a very good class. Jason Kendall is our center fielder of the future. He has plus-plus speed, according to Baseball America, and has excellent range to go get it in center field. He has a very good bat as well and will be an excellent table setter/base stealer this season (’14-’15). Will Toffey could be our shortstop of the future also, though we have a pretty good player there this year. A guy by the name of Dansby Swanson, who will be one of the best  players in the country this season. But Toffey has all the tools with a left handed bat with power and an above average arm on the left side of  the infield. We loaded up on right handed pitching with Brendan Spagnuolo being our highest ranked guy. We have five right handers in this freshmen class. Lost a couple of highly ranked leftys to the majors, Justus Sheffield (ranked 23 in the country) and Cody Reed (40). We also lost the number five player in the country, right hander Touki Toussaint, and the No.30 player, right hander Dylan Cease. That’s going to happen when you recruit like Corbs does. But it’s a quality group and ’15 and ’16 look sensational. We have 20 commits for ’15 and 11 already for ’16 with highly ranked players all over the place. The future looks totally epic. And the present very much does too. We’ll have Dansby manning shortstop as he  takes over from Vinnie Conde, who will be plying his way up the minor leagues in the Yankees organization. Ro Coleman will move over to second and can give us an incredible one-two punch at the top of the order with Dans. Not sure whom Corbs will put in the leadoff spot, but both are excellent options. Both guys can hit and both can motor. Should be extremely electric at the top of our order. We’ll have Zander Wiel back at first, and I bet we see Zander break out with the power numbers. Xavier Turner is back with the team and he brings an excellent arm and range at third and a solid bat. Tyler Campbell, who was outstanding in the postseason last year in place of X, will challenge X for the starting job at the hot corner. In the outfield, Bryan Reynolds, who had an awesome year at the plate, and made some huge plays defensively in the postseason, will be return in left. I expect Bryan to hit for high average, like he did last year, probably .340-.350’s, and get the power numbers up, with probably 10 or 12 long ones. Love Rhett Wiseman in right. Rhett was another major reason why we won it all last year. He’s an incredible athlete. He made that huge catch in the top of the ninth for the first out against Virginia in the title game. Rhett’s a stud. He’s strong, fast, and so athletic. He’s got ability to give us power, t oo. Carson Fulmer will be our number one guy, most likely, on Friday nights. Excited to see Carson put together an All-American year. We don’t have a lot of left handed arms, but Ben Bowden and John Kilichowski are excellent options as southpaws. Will be interested to talk to Corbs in early January and see what he wants to do with Ben and John. Both are excellent options either out of the pen or maybe as starters. And, of course, the outstanding Hayden Stone, our stellar right hander, will be back. Hayden is another guy who gives us options as a closer, middle guy or as even a starter. Hayden was a major reason we won the national championship last year, and he’s a sophomore. Walker Buehler will be back. Can’t forget about Walker and his 95+ fastball. Expecting great things from Walk. Tyler Ferguson will also return, so we’ve got a potential weekend rotation of Fulmer, Buehler and Ferguson. Will find out more when I visit with Corbs in January. We do have some left handed pitching coming in for ’15 and ’16, so we should be fine with Ben and John until more help comes there. Left handed pitching is a luxury in college or pro baseball. We also have Philip Pfeifer, who is a solid option as well. Phlip has been hurt some, but can definitely help us. Will look forward to speaking with Corbs in January and find out about our team.

So really looking forward to seeing us defend. Should be another excellent year in the SEC. LSU, South Carolina, Florida, Arkansas, Ole Miss and State should have very strong teams, and there will be some others like Kentucky, Tennessee and maybe Alabama which will be highly competitive. Should be another stellar year of Commodore baseball. Very much looking forward to seeing this year’s edition of Corbs’ boys compete.

Our basketball team won its first regular season game of the season over Trevecca Nazarene, a Division II school, 83-56. Our young freshmen are doing very well, but center Damian Jones was the story yesterday. Damian finished with 24 points and 12 boards, five on the offensive glass and seven on defense. Damian was 10-of-13 from the field. He was four-of-nine from the free throw line, so he needs to improve there, but he’s an amazing talent. He’s going to be our go to guy this year and hopefully for two more years. Luke Kornet posted 10 points and 10 boards. Nice outing for Luke. With Damian at 6’10”, and Luke at 7’0″, we have quite the front wall. James Siakam has been hurt, but he’s expected back soon, and James will only make us better with his skywalking, glass-cleaning ability. He really worked his backside off this summer, and Kevin was very excited to see him play. Need to get James back on the floor. Shelby Moats, who landed a job on Wall Street for next year in his first job interview this summer, had an excellent game in 17 minutes. Shelby scored six points on three-of-four from the field and pulled down eight boards. Josh Henderson, who has really persevered through knee injury after knee injury, only scored two points, but pulled down five caroms. Would love to see Josh reach his potential because he can be a valuable player for this team. At 6’11” , he gives us another big who can control the glass and make shots in the paint. He has a very good shot. Jeff Roberson did a really nice job. Jeff, one of our five stellar freshman @ 6″6″, 210, finished with eight points and six boards. Riley LeChance, our freshman shooting guard, was three-of-eight from trifecta. Riley is an excellent marksman from deep. Wade Baldwin IV had nine points and three assists, Shelton Mitchell, who had  stellar exhibition games, finished with six points and four boards. And Matthew Fisher-Davis had five points, two boards and three assists. Carter Josephs and Nathan Watkins got a little time in at the end of the game. Still believe Carter and Nathan can both help us this year, especially working with the freshmen and also with their own individual play. Carter is an excellent assist guy. And he really takes care of the basketball. So I like what this team can do. Kentucky is absolutely loaded this year, and Florida is excellent, too. Arkansas has a good team expecting to make a run for the tournament, Auburn could be a sleeper and Ole Miss, Alabama and Tennessee will be interesting teams. The whole conference will be a battle every night we play. But we’ve got a lot of basketball to play before conference season opens up January 6th at home against Auburn. We will play Lipscomb this Thursday night at Memorial at 9 PM ET/ 8 PM CT on Fox Sports South. Headliners in the pre-SEC season schedule include Baylor and Purdue at home and Georgia Tech and St. Louis on the road. Will have more information on those games as they get closer. The Baylor game will be Thursday, December 4th, @ 6 PM CT/ 7 PM ET on ESPNU. Hopefully, we’ll get a huge crowd out for that one. Baylor is a perennial competitor for a deep run in the tournament, so this should be an excellent test for our group. The Purdue game is Dec. 13th at 8 PM CT/9 PM ET on the SEC Network. Georgia Tech is at 1 PM CT on ESPN3 on Dec. 20th @ Tech, and St. Louis is Dec. 31st @ 1 PM @ St. Louis. No TV announced yet. Also, a couple of huge games at the Barclays Center Classic in Brooklyn, N. Y. as we face Rutgers on Nov.28th @ 8 PM CT/9 PM ET on the NBC Sports Network, and, if we win, we’ll play the Virginia/LaSalle winner on Nov. 29th. UVA is a stellar returning Sweet 16 team and ranked in the top eight in the country and LaSalle is coming off an NCAA tournament appearance. They’re good too. Virginia lost to an outstanding Michigan State team in the Sweet 16. It was an excellent game and UVA has quite a few guys back from that team. So, hopefully, we can face them in the finals of the Barclays. So it  should be an excellent preseason for the team. The freshman will be certainly thrown into the fray immediately. The Auburn game, Jan. 6h, is @ 8 PM CT/9 PM ET on ESPNU.

The 2015 signing class is exceptional. We signed four-star center D’Jerry Baptiste from Plano, Texas. D’Jerry is 7’0″, 250, and the second coming of the Sherman Tank. Watched D’Jerry on film and loved his game. He can dominate even more than Festus did. And if we can keep Damian around for four years, even three years, he and D’Jerry will be forces next year and in the following year. D’Jerry can dominate the glass, is highly physical, can score and play excellent defense. He will be a sheriff in the middle. Samir Sehic is a high three-star who is 6’8″, 255. Another physical player who can score and board. Samir is from the Houston area, and is originally from Bosnia and Herzegovina. Joseph Toye is a high three-star small  forward from Indiana. Joseph is 6 ‘7″, 200 and is a Rivals 150 player at #114 and is an 88 rated by 247 sports. D’Jerry is a 93, 247 player, and Samir is an 89, almost a four-star. Camron Justice is a 6’2″, 180 pound shooter from Hindman, Kentucky. Just a pure shooter. Camron is an 88 three-star by 247. D’Jerry chose VU over offers from defending national champion UConn, Iowa, OU, and Kansas State among many others. Samir chose us over offers from Wake Forest, Notre Dame, Davidson and many others. Joseph chose us over Auburn, Missouri, Iowa, Providence and quite a few others. Camron, who has already scored over 2,800 points in his career, chose us over Tennessee, Notre Dame, Wake, Boston College, Gonzaga and others. The class is ranked in the top 3o in most all of the recruiting services and no.44 in 247 sports. Excellent class. And we will have Cornell transfer Nolan Cressler on the team next year. Nolan is apparently an incredible shooter. The present and the future look extremely bright for our basketball team.

Believe in Derek. He’s a really good man and an excellent football coach. We have played around 40 redshirt freshmen this year. It’s only going to pay dividends for the future. Johnny and Patton are our guys at quarterback. Good to have Patton back healthy. It’ll be interesting to see whom Derek starts this Saturday at Mississippi State (6:30 PM CT/7:30 PM ET on SEC Network). We’ve had to learn new offensive and defensive systems. Wade Freebeck is a talented freshman for the future at qb, and commit Kyle Shurmur is apparently awesome. We’ve got 11 solid guys in this class and it looks like we’ll be adding seven or eight more. Got some excellent guys we’re after.

It’s been an adjustment for the coaches and the players this season. But we’ll get it done with Derek. We’ll play aggressive, physcial defense and with Ralph Webb and Dallas Rivers and a couple of the commits we’ll be excellent at running back in the future. C.J. Duncan is a game changer at wide receiver and our tight ends are awesome. Most of the o line will be back next year. Latevius Rayford is an outstanding receiver too. I’ve watched a couple of these Stanford tight ends in the pros, Colby Fleener and Zac Ertz, and they are game changers. And we have the tight ends who can do that for us in Steven Scheu, a junior, Davis Dudchock, a senior, and Nathan Marcus, a redshirt freshman. All three guys look like next level players. Just gotta go for it in Starkville this Saturday and then against UT at home to finish off the season. Derek will get it done. Firmly believe that.

Jay and the Bears won yesterday. He threw for three touchdowns and 330 yards. Threw a couple of ints. If he can clean that up, the Bears can still make the playoffs. They’re 4-6, but have a shot at the wild card if they can win out or at least win five of six. The NFC is wide open in the wild card race. Detroit did lose yesterday to drop to 7-3 and we do play the Lions twice before the season is over. Have the Tampa Bay Bucs, which are fresh off at win at Washington, so gotta be ready. We have no choice. Pretty much need to win out. JMatt caught a TD pass and is playing excellent for the Eagles. JMatt is awsome. Casey Hayward had a 49 yard fumble return for a TD yesterday against the Eagles as the Packers blasted JMatt and the Eagles, 53-20. Casey has it going as he had a pick six for 82 yards last week against Jay and the Bears. Casey was hurt last year and I was a little worried about him, but he’s back with a vengeance this season. Andre Hal playing a lot for the Texas and Sean Richardson getting good playing time for the Pack. Will try to find out more about guys like Wesley Johnson, who is with the Steelers, and Chris Williams, who was starting for the Bills but got hurt. I watched Chris in the exhibition season and he was doing very well.

Always thinking about DP, Sonny, Mike, Pedro and Ryan. Excited to see the guys compete for championships in the big leagues next year.

Not sure what’s going on with John Jenkins in Atlanta. Hope JJ can stay with the team. Fes Ezeli is doing well for Golden State. Jeff Taylor got into some trouble before the season started, so not sure about his status with the Charlotte Hornets.

Will have more coming up in the upcoming days/ weeks on football, basketball and baseball.

The Saints had won 20 straight at home under Sean Payton, though he was suspended for the 2012 season. The Saints get it back here. Trust Brees and the Saints over Andy Dalton and the Bengals.

The Niners look like they’ve gotten it together and with some guys coming back on defense soon including defensive end Aldon Smith Sunday, they’re right back in the hunt. Not sure the Arizona Cardinals are going to come back to the pack in the NFC West, but the Niners could get themselves back in it if they keep winning. They do face the Cardinals and the Seattle Seahawks twice before the season is over. It’s just a struggle for Eli and the Giants right now.

Really starting to believe in this Cardinals team even with starting quarterback Carson Palmer out for the season with a knee injury. Like their backup, Drew Stanton. He’s led the team to three wins already this year and the defense has been really good with Patrick Peterson going off at cornerback lately. He had two ints last week, one for a 30 yard pick seven against the St. Louis Rams in a 31-14 Cardinals victory. Like Tyrann Mathieu at free safety. The Honey Badger is making his mark in the league as well. The Lions are having a very good year, but the Cardinals get it done at home. Good defensive game with two of the best defenses in the league.

Really like what Chip Kelly is doing at Philadelphia. They’re one of the best teams in the NFL. I expect them to go deep this year, and if they can get home field in the playoffs they can make it to University of Phoenix Stadium for Super Bowl 49 on Feb.1, 2015. But it’s the Packers at home and ARodg  and his team are really tough to beat even though I really like this Eagles team. Expect a great game.

Tom Brady and stellar tight end Rob Gronkowski have gone off lately. Brady started off the first four games throwing only four touchdowns, but since the  Patriots’ 2-2 start, Brady has thrown 18 touchdowns to one int. Brady has now thrown 22 TDs to just three interceptions on the season. Gronk has caught 49 passes for 663 yards and eight TDs. With that said, I still like Andrew Luck and the Colts at home. Don’t totally trust the Patriots on the road here. No team is dominant  yet, and I like the home field for the Colts.

Big Ben Rothlisberger and his team were on a tear until an upset loss at the Jets last Sunday. Ben had thrown six TDs in his two previous games before going 30-of 43 (pretty good) for 343 with one TD but two ints in a 20-13 loss at the Meadowlands. The Steelers are up and down, but Titans rookie quarterback Zach Mettenberger (LSU) is not where he needs to be yet. In a 21-7 loss to the Ravens last week, Mettenberger was 16-of-27 for 179 yards with one TD and one int. Not too bad, but he was sacked five times. Mettenberger has potential, but he’s still growing as a quarterback in the National Football League. But I expect a pretty good game. The Titans will be competitive.

Another blockbuster Saturday in week 12

Bama and AU in classics on Saturday. The Tide and State battle it out for major playoff implications. The Tigers and the Dawgs renew the 118th game between the two storied programs. It’s the oldest rivalry in the Deep South. Auburn has to win here. So does Georgia. Some other excellent SEC match ups and some key national games on tap. Here’s a look at what’s in store Saturday as the playoff conversation has gone radioactive.

Last week: 17-3; Overall: 126-48 (72%)

Bama fans may be a bit ticked off that their team is not in the top 4, but it’s irrelevant. The Tide has complete control of their destiny and wins over State and Auburn and in the SEC title game insures they will be in. That’s a lot of heavy lifting though, so a lot of work to do for Alabama. T.J. Yeldon has been practicing this week, so he should be good to go on Saturday. He has a high ankle sprain. It may be time for S and Lane to try Tyren Jones and Altee Tenpenny to see what they can do in giving Yeldon and Derrick Henry a blow. Another guy S may really want to consider getting on the field is Reuben Foster. Wow, he de-cleated LSU’s Leonard Fournette last Saturday night on a kickoff return late in the game. What a physical player. When he hits you, the next thing you see is the turf. Foster deserves a shot to play some at linebacker. Reggie Ragland and Trey DePriest are excellent linebackers, but Foster has to get in there. Talk about a guy who can force some fumbles. He epitomizes the term “laying the wood”. He will lay some serious Yella Wood on opponents.  Dak Prescott has completed 146-of-239 passes (61.1%) for 2,231 yards, 18 TDs and seven ints. He’s also run for 779 more and 11 TDs. He’s quite a player and right up there with Marcus Mariota for the lead in the Heisman race. But he has thrown seven interceptions and can be inaccurate at times. Running back Josh Robinson is an awesome player as well. He’s rushed for 984 yards and 11 TDs. He’s a bull. Wide receiver De’Runnya Wilson has caught 22 passes for 367 yards and six TDs. Wilson is 6’5″, 225 and is a load to cover. Cyrus Jones,  Eddie Jackson and Tony Brown will be tested at the corners. Robinson is 5’9″, 215 and fast. He’s definitely capable of house calls. Prescott is 6’2″, 230. On defense, linebacker Benardrick McKinney is the Bulldogs leading tackler with 55 on the season. Defensive end Preston Smith leads the team with seven sacks and 11.5 tackles for loss. Linebacker Richie Brown leads the team with three interceptions, all of which came against Texas A&M. State allows 126 rushing yards per game and 3o0 passing yards. They give up a lot of yards, but are pretty good in red zone. They are 26th in the country in that category. Alabama is 2nd. Wisconsin leads the country. Blake Sims has completed 151-of-245 passes (62%) for 2,243 yards and 17 touchdowns against only three ints. Blake really takes care of the ball well and led the Tide on that epic drive last Saturday night in Death Valley. That’s  one that could go down in Crimson Tide lore if the team wins another national title. Amari Cooper has 79 receptions for 1,215 yards and 10 TDs. There are some serious Heisman candidates in this game with Prescott, and Amari.  Blake could get his name in the conversation with a big performance. With the playoff on the line, especially for the Crimson Tide, and most likely for State, I like the Tide to get it done at Bryant-Denny.

Line: Dawgs by 2 1/2

It’s going to be pretty chilly at Sanford Stadium in Athens on Saturday night. With a cold ball, ball security will be a factor. The big story is that Todd Gurley is back for the Dawgs and the Dawgs ground game will now feature Gurley along with stellar freshmen Nick Chubb and Sony Michel, though Michel is questionable for the game with a bad ankle. The AU defense really has their hands full in this one even with just Gurley and Chubb. Both are exceptional.  This will come down to who can score the most points. Nick Marshall has been playing well lately. So has Cameron Artis-Payne. But I don’t think the Tigers defense can do enough to stop that ballistic running game of the Dawgs. Should be a good game, but have to go with the Dawgs here.

Duh U will be gunning for the Noles @ home in Sun Life Stadium. Everybody ratchets their game up for Jameis and the Noles. While Miami will give FSU a  hard fought game, like the Noles to survive and advance like they have all season. Particularly if Jameis wears his contacts.

Update: Friday, Nov. 14th @ 4 PM CT:

The two starting cornerbacks for Florida State, P.J. Williams and Ronald Darby, were involved in a hit and run accident in October after the Seminoles defeated Wake Forest, 43-3. Williams was driving with a suspended license and the Tallahassee Police and the Florida State security officers gave him pretty much a pass. He was fined for two tickets totaling $392, but has yet to pay them. It’s just another case of dysfunction at the penitentiary that uses a college as its mask. The worst part about it is the university and its head football coach,  Jimbo Fisher, enable these kids to break rules whenever they want without any accountability or repercussions. It’s really disturbing when you think about it. Fisher keeps saying he’s got a high character group. At some point, he’s gong to become a joke, maybe as soon as this goes viral. I picked Florida State yesterday, but after this latest incident, which was reported by ESPN and SI.com, I don’t trust this group to overcome the latest in a rap sheet of offenses. The disastrous personal behavior of this team finally catches up with them in Coral Gables, Florida.

This has been a tough year for the Ball Coach, who was cautiously expecting great things from this team as the season started. He goes back to the Swamp where he had major success as a head coach at Florida. But he’s been at South Carolina since 2005, so this is now routine for him. Ball Coach’s defense has been sub-standard all season. Not sure if defensive coordinator Lorenzo Ward can get through to the players, or the players just aren’t very good. They should be good though. They were all rated pretty highly in the recruiting rankings. Florida hit their stride in the Georgia game two weeks ago and they’re clicking on all cylinders right now. They are going to try and  ram it down the Gamecocks throat on the ground with their outstanding running backs, Matt Jones and Kelvin Taylor, and Treon Harris can do some good things with both his arm and his legs. The Gators defense has really come on, too, in the last two weeks. They had a pretty easy win over Vandy last week, 34-10, and I’m a believer in what Will Muschamp has got going right now. Like the Gators to keep the momentum going and move closer to a pretty good bowl game.

TCU is averaging 47 points per game. Their quarterback, Trevone Boykin, is lighting it up with 23 TD passes through the air and seven more on the ground. He’s certainly in the Heisman mix. And one of the best under the radar backs in the country is Aaron Green. He’s run for 549 yards in nine games, but is averaging 8.7 yards per carry. This team is for real. They’ve got an aggressive pretty effective defense, too. It might snow Saturday in Lawrence (90% chance of snow as of today) and that may slow the Horned Frogs offense down a little, but not enough.

This could be an interesting game. Ohio State is back in the conversation for the playoff after their huge victory at Michigan State last Saturday night, 49-37. Quarterback J.T. Barrett has been superb. He’s thrown for 26 touchdowns and run for eight more. It’s going to be cold with a temperature of 22 at kickoff, and it’ll feel like 14, but these teams are pretty used to this kind of weather in November.  Still may be a factor somewhat as it will cut down on the scoring and could lead to more turnovers with a cold, hard ball. The Buckeyes will escape and matriculate in their improving playoff hopes, but not by much.
