AU, Bama spring thoughts; other teams

Nick Marshall set for stellar year

The Tide's hopes this year ride on the right arm of Jacob Coker

AU:

Loved what I saw out of the Auburn offense. Defense is banged up right now, so didn’t see guys like Carl Lawson, Elijah Daniel, Kris Frost, Cassanova McKinzy and some dbs play, so the offense just racked up the yards and the points, winning 58-3. Nick Marshall looks like an absolute stud. Four TD passes. 240 yards passing. 13-of-24. He was excellent. Jeremy Johnson looks like a capable backup. Sammie Coates is All-American good. D’haquille “Duke” Williams, the junior college transfer, looks extremely special. Ricardo Louis is probably the most underrated player on the team, but he’s valuable as a pass catcher and runner on reverses. He can make a lot happen. Really liked what I saw out of Quan Bray. He’s going to have a breakout year it looks like. Tight end, didn’t see a lot, but C.J. Uzomah is talented. Brandon Fulse is a good blocker and can catch it. The running game looks fantastic. Corey Grant is a game changing running back with his world class speed and he’s a tough runner too. He’s got it all. Cameron Artis-Payne is another player who looks ready to break out. Love the way he runs between the tackles. He’s tough with deceptively good speed.  The line looks fantastic. With four of five guys returning led by potential All-American center Reese Dismukes this line could be like the line at Alabama two years ago with Barrett, Chance Warmack, D.J. Fluker and company. Alex Kozan at guard is a beast. Shon Coleman, in an amazing return from cancer, looks ready to excel. There is a lot of depth. The line looks stellar and dominating. Very physical, hard-nosed group. This offense could be as good as any Auburn has ever had, maybe the best ever, and may be as good as the SEC has ever seen, if they can stay healthy at key positions. So impressed with Nick Marshall. He’s a stud. Defense needs to get healthy too though. AU has talent on defense, maybe need to keep developing depth. If their defense can be better than last year’s, which I think they will, this could be an ultra-special season for the Tigers. Kicking game OK. Daniel Carlson isn’t totally trustable kicking the ball, but could get better by the fall with plenty of reps. Punter looks fine. Return game should be good with a lot of options to return kicks and punts with Quan Bray, Duke Williams, Corey Grant and some others. Should be a very good year for the Tigers. Can they win it all? Yes, they can though the schedule is demanding. They have to go to Ole Miss, a good State team, Georgia and ‘Bama and have a little bit of a tricky one at Kansas State early in the season. Ole Miss and State should be good football teams. South Carolina comes to the Plains and that’ll be interesting. It’s a little premature to pick who the absolute national champion will be, but Auburn has a shot. They’ll be in the mix, though they’ll have to survive some tough road tests and stay healthy.

Bama:

Jacob Coker is going to have to be good, which I think he will, and he needs to stay healthy. Blake Sims had some good scrimmages, but he didn’t have his best spring game. The offensive line didn’t help him much. Cooper Bateman shows flashes, so that’s to be determined too. Coker is an exceptional athlete, and was outstanding at St. Paul’s in Mobile in high school throwing for 16 touchdowns and just two intercptions. He was almost a four-star recruit. He was an excellent basketball player averaging 25 points in high school too, so that’s a sign of a good athlete. He ran for 355 and scored five TDs on the ground his senior year at St. Paul’s. He almost beat out Heisman Trophy winner Jameis Winston last spring so that tells me a lot about him. He’s going to be good. He’s just going to have to immerse himself in Lane Kiffin’s playbook, and have it down for fall practice. He’s a smart kid who is graduating from FSU soon, and will be at ‘Bama for two years after that. I think Alabama can win with him, and do well. Can ‘Bama win it all? If Coker comes through and Blake and Cooper can develop more in case Coker gets hurt, that’s the key. Along with the offensive line. Center Ryan Kelly, guard Arie Kouandijo and left tackle Austin Shepherd are back and that’s a good foundation. Freshman all world (according to the rankings) Cam Robinson could be a starter at right tackle. His size is fantastic (6’6″, 325) and he was the third ranked player in the country by Rivals. He’s supposed to be awesome. He’s got a lot learning to do though. But the potential is there. I really like Leon Brown at the other guard. I watched him in the Sugar Bowl and he was tough and very physical and athletic. Really like Leon. O line coach Mario Cristobal will just have to get this chemistry right , and get the depth in order. There is a lot of talent that just needs to come together. Running back is outstanding with the awesome Derrick Henry ready for a blockbuster year. T.J. Yeldon will give you 1,000+ yards every year. He’s a proven, exceptional back. With Henry, it gives the Tide more of that power and speed type back combination that every team wants though T.J. is pretty physical too, and Henry has got terrific speed and can be a game breaker. Kenyan Drake can be a game changer at running back if he can just hold on to the ball. He is electric. And Altee Tenpenny has got a ton of talent, he just needs to get more confidence. Tyren Jones looks pretty good too. I’m not sure if S is going to put incoming freshman Bo Scarborough in that mix too, but he’s an exceptional athlete. He’ll be an asset somewhere whether it’s running back, or on defense at a star or as a safety. Looks like a pretty good running back to me. The wide receivers look very good. Amari looks like Julio. Game breaker/changer, exceptional player. Christion Jones is another game changer. I liked what I saw out of Robert Foster and ArDarius Stewart. Really impressed with Stewart as an athlete. Looks exceptional. DeAndrew White will be back and Chris Black, though he dropped a couple of passes in the spring game, is an outstanding player. Love O.J. Howard at tight end. He is an awesome weapon. Brian Vogler is solid at tight end too.

Defense is totally loaded. The line looks fantastic. D.J. Pettway is a machine and a game changer at defensive end. He returned an interception for a 22 yard touchdown. Incredible athlete. A’Shawn Robinson is big, physical and a dominator on the line. A’Shawn is 6’4″, 320. Looks like a stellar front. Linebacker is excellent with Trey Depriest and young studs Reggie Ragland, who had an awesome spring game and Reuben Foster. And you have returners Denzel Devall and Xzavier Dickson who are awesome physical specimens and can really play. Secondary is going to be fine. It would be nice for the Tide to get Eddie Jackson back at corner for the fall. Hopefully he will be. But Tony Brown looks like a starter in the NFL already. He’s strong. Landon Collins is primed to have a huge year at safety and Geno Smith looks to be very good. Need to keep developing back there and stay healthy. Bradley Sylve at corner and Nick Perry at safety should help depth-wise if Eddic can make it back for the fall. S will be coaching the secondary, so those guys will be coached up. S doesn’t have a secondary coach. He’s the best secondary coach in the business so why not.

Should be a stellar year for the Tide  again if Coker can live up to what is expected of him and he stays healthy, the line keeps developing and the secondary plays well. The talent is there. Can the Tide win it all? Of course they can. They’re always in the mix. Blake and Cooper will need to develop some more in the summer and the fall. Bama opens against West Virginia in Atlanta at the Chick Fil-A kickoff game. That’s a 2:30 PM CT start on August 30th. Believe it’ll be ESPN, but will know more soon. Maybe ABC. One or the other. West Virginia will probably be pretty good on offense and questionable on defense, so this will be a good first game for the Alabama offense to see if they can get it crankin. Florida Atlantic and Southern Miss come to Tuscaloosa then the Gators come to T-town. The Gators have new offensive coordinator in Kirk Roper, who came from Duke and Jeff Driskel is healthy, so they should be better on offense. Going to watch the Gators spring game early next week so should know more. Muschamp has recruited pretty well. They were decimated by injuries last year, and Muschamp really needs to perform this year. Roper is supposed to be a tremendous offensive coach, and Muschamp really needs that. Defense for Florida should be good. So that’s a test. @ Ole Miss and @ Arkansas should be challenging, Ole Miss for sure. They’re pretty good. Bo Wallace has had mixed results, but he can be pretty good. They’ve got a lot of talent. Freeze has recruited well. Don’t know what the status of the Nkemdiche brothers are. They got in trouble, but they’ll probably be OK and ready. Robert, to me, was a disappointment last year. But he’ll be better as a sophomore. Denzel had a good year two years ago, but was hurt last year some. They’ve got good wide receivers and pretty backs. They should be good. Arkansas, I’m just not sure about. They should be better. I kind of liked their quarterback Brandon Allen before he got hurt. He looked pretty good early in the season. Texas A&M is at home and A&M is kind of unknown. They kind of remind me of LSU this year. There is a ton of talent, Sumlin has recruited very well, but quarterback is a real question mark. They have a redshirt freshman and a freshman competing for the job as senior Matt Joeckel transferred from A&M to TCU. That’s a blow in my opinion. So A&M is an unknown. Without good quarterback play, they’re going to struggle. Sumlin will have his work cut out for him with his quarterback situation. Bama is then @ Tennessee and @ LSU. UT should be better, but don’t think they’ll be an elite team in the East. Too many question marks at quarterback and on defense. LSU has loads of talent, but again the quarterback position is highly questionable with a sophomore who’s not battle tested and some younger guys. Then State at home, which will be a challenge as State is good this year, but Bama does usually take care of business vs. State, then Western Carolina and the Plainsmen come in on Nov. 29th for the best rivalry in college football. There could be a ton riding on that game; SEC West crown, national championship possibilities. With the four team playoff, we could see both the Tide and the Tigers playing in the Rose and Sugar bowls in the semifinals. That would be classic to have an iron bowl II game in the playoffs, either in the semifinals or  the national title game.

So if qb works out, ‘Bama will be right there. Line needs to keep developing as does the secondary in order for the Tide to win their 16th national championship.

Other SEC teams to look for are South Carolina with Dylan Thompson taking over from Connor Shaw. Thompson should be pretty good and there is good talent on that football team. Defense needs to get better. Offense will always be good under Ball Coach. Can Lorenzo Ward get it done on the defensive side of the ball; that’s my question. Georgia is loaded on offense, but not sure new DC Jeremy Pruitt has enough horses on defense yet. But there is a ton of weapons on offense for the Dawgs. If anybody can get it done on defense, it’s Pruitt. Big believer in him.

Watched Stanford spring game. Saw some good things on defense, but their offense has work to do. Will be watching other spring games in the next two weeks and will give brief reports on those.

Picking Keegan Bradley to win this week at the Zurich Classic in New Awlins. Graham Deleat is knocking on the door as well. He’ll be in the hunt.

New transfer to bball

Nolan Cressler to VU from Cornell
Sophomore shooting guard Nolan Cressler is transferring to Vanderbilt. 6’4″ guard who averaged 16.8 ppg for Cornell. Nice addition. Nolan will not be eligible for this year’s team (2014-15) per NCAA transfer rules, but will be on the team in 2015-16. Could really help us. VU basketball setting up well for the future. Also we got a visit from 6’8″, 260 power forward Sean Obi from Rice. If Sean comes our way he would not be eligible this year, but would be eligible in 2015-16 as well. Will keep you posted on Sean. Nolan will have two years to play once he starts in 2015-16. I like the direction of our basketball program. Hopefully we can land Sean too, and Kedren and Josh make it back for next year. Excited about the future.

It’s been a struggle for our weekend rotation in baseball, but hopefully we can work out the kinks and start playing the kind of baseball we’re used to. Lost two out of three to A&M. Just got to get better production in all facets of the game starting with our starters on the weekend.
Rays lost Matt Moore, one of their top starters, for the year with Tommy John surgery. Alex Cobb, another frontline starter, is on the DL with a strained oblique. Rays are going to have to power through these injuries and some other pitchers are going to have to step up. The two sure things are Dave and most of the time Chris Archer though he got rocked by the O’s last night in Baltimore, 7-1. The good news is that Ryan Flaherty had two run scoring singles and played third for the O’s. Rays need to regroup.
Pirates’ game with the Reds was suspended last night due to rain after seven. The game was tied 7-7 and the Bucs hit six home runs in the game. Pedro didn’t have one of them. They’ll finish the game today at 5:30 PM ET/4:30 CT then play their regularly scheduled game with the Reds @ 7:10 PM ET/6:10 CT.
Braves beat the Phillies, 9-6, and A’s beat the LA Angels, 3-2.
Hopefully, football replay is tomorrow night. It’s not on the guide on CSS, but I was told by the VU media relations it is on tomorrow night. If not tomorrow night, it’ll be a week from tomorrow on CSS. Time to be determined. Will keep you posted on tomorrow night.

Gerry Lester “Bubba” Watson adds another green jacket to his attire

Bubba golf does it again
Bubba’s golf game is absurdly good. With 20-year old  phenom Jordan Spieth threatening to pull away from him early in the round, Bubba came up hugely clutch in the most pressure packed day in golf. Jordan sank in from the bunker on the par-3 fourth to look like he took a three-shot lead and dang it if Bubba didn’t come right back and sink an eight foot putt to keep his deficit at two shots. Spieth was -7 and Bubba was -5. Then on the par 3 sixth, Spieth just stiffed it after Bubba had hit a beautiful shot of his own putting it about 17 feet away. It was looking like Jordan, who should be an all time good player if he can stay hungry, was going to take a three shot lead., But Bubba calmly drained his 17 footer, an amazing putt. Jordan, of course, sank his three footer. Then on eight is when the tournament took a turn in Bubba’s favor. Bubba birdied from five feet and Spieth bogeyed to even them up. Then on nine, Bubba birdied from 10 feet and Spieth missed his tricky three foot downhiller for bogey and all of the sudden, Bubba had a two-shot lead. When Spieth hit it in the water on the par-3 12th, Bubba took command, but not without some dramatic “Bubba” golf on 15. Bubba had a seemingly impossible second shot on the par 5 15th in which he would either have to go through some trees to get it on the green in two or just punch it out and play for birdie. The punch out looked like the only play with a three shot lead. Just get it in the fairway and keep your lead. Spieth had already hit it to the right of the green and looked like he was going to have a tough time getting up and down for birdie. But in true Bubba form, he went for the green and, in true Bubba form, executed the shot and was over the green in two making par. This was after a 367 yard drive on the par five 13th in which he had a pitching wedge to the green on a 510 yard hole. Wow. Bubba also sank a key par putt on 17 from 5 feet that pretty much iced it. He had so much confidence on the tight as an eight foot wide alley hole off the tee. He crushed it and locked the tournament up there.

It was vintage Bubba golf. What is so underrated about Bubba’s game because he is such a bomber and risk taker, is his short game. He can really chip and putt. He sank clutch putt after clutch putt. It was beautiful. At 35 years old, Bubba Watson is on the top of the golfing world. I see potential multiple majors– he already has two–for this native of Bagdad, Florida, who played at Faulkner State Community College in Baldwin Country, Alabama, only 30 minutes away from his home. Baldwin County is in south Alabama near Mobile. Then Bubba played at the University of Georgia for two years (2000-01) before setting out on a professional career. He has now won six times on the PGA tour after winning yesterday and winning in February at the Northern Trust Open at Riviera CC in LA. The win at Riviera was his first victory on tour since the 2012 Masters. Amazing how the game can come around if you keep on working at it. Proud for Bubba. Incredibly clutch play yesterday.

Just a word on Jordan Spieth too. I predicted that a veteran would win this, not a rookie in the Masters. I didn’t get the right veteran, but I believed and still do that experience matters at Augusta. I picked Jason Day, but Day’s injury that kept him out of competition for seven weeks hampered him at Augusta National. He finished at +2, 10 shots back of Bubba. I do think Day is going to get a major very soon if he can stay healthy. But Spieth is something else and he almost pulled it off yesterday. He’s got a lot of the iron will characteristics that Eldrick had in his 20’s, but to me he’s so much more likeable. I really like him. He was classy and he said this experience made him even “hungrier” to work harder and finish the job. I really see some greatness out of this young man. Love his game and love his demeanor on the course and his personality off the course. He respects his opponents, respects the game, and respects the media’s job. He didn’t act like it was a hassle to talk to CBS after the round. He could be very special.

While the 2014 Masters is behind us now after another epic event, there is some stellar golf upcoming. Still have the U.S. Open at Pinehurst No.2 in June, the British Open at Hoylake in England in July and the PGA at Vallhalla in Louisvillem Ky in August. There is the highly exciting Players Championship in May, the “fifth major” according to the players. There are tournaments like the Memorial and even the RBC Heritage this weekend will have a good field. I enjoy every one of them. Golf is so good right now. And we’re just getting started. Epic way to kick off the major season with Gerry Lester “Bubba” Watson donning another green jacket.

Key holes:

Back side of Augusta on Sunday:

No.10: Camelia-495 yards, Par-4

Historically the most difficult hole on the course. Rory McIlroy saw his hopes of winning his first Green Jacket at 21, dashed on this hole as he snap hooked his drive into the trees. It’s a bit shorter than the yardage thanks to a downhill layout, but it’s tough. The dogleg left prevents the longer hitters from hitting driver as a straight drive from a long hitter is trouble on the right with a massive collection of trees although Bubba Watson executed a miracle shot out of the trees in 2012 to win his first Green Jacket in a playoff over Louis Oosthuizen. Most players will try to shape the ball right to left around the bend and avoid running it through the fairway. The second shot provides very little margin for error. There is a large bunker  to the right in front of the green, which is a very difficult up and down if you find it, and long or left will leave you a highly challenging up and down. The green slopes from right to left and is very challenging to read. Par is good; birdie is very helpful.

No.11: White Dogwood-505 yards, Par-4

The start of Amen Corner. The longest Par-4 on the course, and to me, the hardest hole. The dogleg right and overhanging trees on the right means the players need to shape the ball from left to right, in other words, a cut is needed here. Water surrounds the left and the back of the green with a bunker on the back right. Players can miss short right, but that doesn’t leave an easy up and down. Most players will try to shape the ball from right-to-left and stay far away from the water on Sunday to try and escape with an up and down par or a two-putt par.

No.12: Golden Bell-155 yards-Par 3

The second hole at Amen Corner is also  the most famous par-3 in all of golf. The short 12th is historically the third hardest hole on the course. Wind is often a huge factor on the hole, making the club choice critical as one of the biggest keys to success. Rae’s Creek guards the front of the hole with one front bunker and two in the back. Many will target the center of the green and be happy with a two-putt par.

No.13: Azalea-510 yards, Par-5

The final hole of Amen Corner provides a bit of a reprieve from the first two, but it’s a high risk-reward hole. With a good tee shot, many players will be able to attack the Par-5 in two. But in order to do that, the players need to shape the ball right to left on the severe dogleg left. If they do it successfully, they will have a mid to long iron into the green. A tributary of Rae’s Creek runs along the left of the fairway and the front of the green with four large bunkers guarding the back of the green. Historically, the hole plays as the second easiest on the course and was recently the site of Phil Mickelson’s amazing second shot out of the pine straw and onto the green (2010). Such a recovery is rare when you drive it through the dogleg fairway. A birdie is almost a must here on Sunday and there are possible eagles to be had with three excellent shots (including the putt).

No.14: Chinese Fir-440 yards, Par-4

The tee shot on the 14th is the easiest part of the hole with most players hitting a relatively straight shot, aiming for the right-center of the fairway. From there, it gets much harder. with a multi-tiered green, an accurate approach is vital, but also very difficult. With a sloped fairway, players will have an uneven lie on their second shot. The green is tiered and heavily sloped. Missing short makes saving par a major challenge. Any approach within 15 feet of the pin is excellent.

No.15: Fire Thorn-530 yards, Par-5

The last five winners have all played 13 and 15 under par for the tournament. Another hole where a birdie is critical on Sunday. Historically, it’s the easiest hole on the course. It’s the best birdie opportunity of the closing stretch. The reachable Par-5 will yield its share of birdies, but isn’t a pushover either. A solid tee shot is required to have any shot at going for the green. Most will try to find the right side of the fairway off the tee. A good drive will leave a mid iron into the green. Wind will be a serious factor on the hole, impacting strategy and club choice.A pond guards the front of the green with a bunker on the back right. Missing long is a safe play, but leaves a challenging up-and-down. The green is one of the easiest on the course, A player who reaches the green in two should come away with no worse than a birdie. The hole was made most famous by Gene Sarazen’s double eagle in 1935, the reason the crossway over the pond is called Sarazen’s bridge. However, an unlucky bounce off the flagstick, and a little ball drop controversy last year might overtake Sarazen as the most memorable moment on this hole.

No.16: Redbud-170 yards, Par-3

The 16th features more water than any other hole, and while rarely coming into play, it can. Players tee off over the water, with the real challenge finding the right tier of the green, depending on pin placement. There’s a bunker front right, right and to the left. The pin placements can be very difficult, especially front left, but a player can catch the right side of the green have the ball roll down to the left front close to  the hole. This front left pin placement is usually the one on Sundays. This is the scene of Tiger Woods’ miracle chip in 2005. This hole can lead to some high drama. Jack worked some magic on it in 1986, birdieing it on his way to winning his sixth green jacket at age 46. That’s sensational.

No.17: Nandina-440 yards, Par-4

The Eisenhower tree is no longer there. “Ike” played 800 rounds of golf during his presidency from 1954-61 and over 200 rounds at Augusta and he asked the board in a board meeting in 1956 to have the tree removed. Clifford Roberts promptly adjourned the meeting. This was the Commander of all Allied forces in Europe in World War II and the President of the United States and he still couldn’t get Augusta to remove that tree. Ike had a bad knee from a football injury which caused him to slice the ball. He hit that dadgum tree (not Ike’s words, trying to keep it clean) about every time he played at Augusta. But Ike finally got his wish posthumously as an ice storm this winter caused Augusta National to have to bring the tree down. Without the tree, the tee shot will be slightly less demanding on the straightforward Par-4. The hole plays uphill with most players hitting a mid iron into the green. Pin placement dictates a lot at No.17. The left side of the green is fairly manageable. The right side, however, is difficult. A back right pin placement can easily yield more bogeys than birdies. There is a trap in front on the right and the green slopes to the right. A two putt par with a back right pin placement is pretty good. Verne Lundquist’s famous “Yes sir!” call of Jack’s birdie there in ’86 is one of the most famous lines in golf broadcasting lore.

No.18: Holly-465 yards, Par-4

The 18th will lead to some epic drama on Sunday as it always does. Just last year, Adam Scott birdied the 18th from 18 feet to take a one shot lead. Adam’s caddie, Stevie Williams, said he could see half of Angel Cabrera’s body in the fairway after they finished and knew that Adam was going to be in a playoff. Sure enough, Angel from 150 yards stuck it two feet and birdies to send Adam and Angel into a playoff, which Adam won on the second playoff hole, the 10th hole, with a 12 foot birdie putt. The hole is a dogleg right that will challenge the players from tee to green. The narrow driving chute through trees on both sides of the fairway requires extreme accuracy. Driving it too far right brings trees in play and leaves an impossible second shot. There is a bunker 280 yards on the right, which can cause some issues. The shorter hitters may use a three wood on this hole and the longer hitters can have trouble with it. There is a large bunker on the left and a large one on the right guarding the two-tiered green. The green slopes from back to front and to the right. Finding the right tier for the pin placement is critical to having a shot at biride. The pin placement on Sunday is usually front right. An inaccurate approach can easily result in a costly three-putt bogey or into one of the traps which causes problems. Kenny Perry had a one shot lead on Sunday in 2009 over Angel and Chad Campbell and his approach went left and he couldn’t get it up and down from the rough, which led to a three-way playoff which Angel won. Should be classic here late Sunday afternoon and can easily determine who dons the Green Jacket.

Analysis:

There is no Tiger Woods but that’s OK. This is the Masters and it’s bigger than Tiger Woods. He’s been an integral part of the rich history of this amazing tournament, and may be in the future if he can solve his back issues, but there have been many players who have made this such an elite event in sports. There’s Jack Nicklaus with six Green Jackets and 18 majors; Arnie with four Green Jackets and seven majors; Bobby Jones, the founder (with help from businessman Clifford Roberts) and co-desginer with Alister MacKenzie of Augusta National. The first Masters was played in 1934. Jones didn’t win the Masters because he was retired and practicing law to make a living, but before he retired from golf, he won four U.S. Opens, three Open Championships, five U.S. Amateurs and one British Amateurs. He completed the Grand Slam in 1930 consisting of the U.S. the British Open Championship, the U.S. Amateur and the British Amateur. It was an amazing feat. He’s a golfer for the ages. Ben Hogan is part of Masters lore as well as he won two Green Jackets and nine majors. Sam Snead won three Masters and seven majors. Seve Ballesteros won two Masters and five majors. And Sir Nick Faldo won three Masters and six majors. The tournament is bigger than any one player.

The contenders:

I like the veterans. Only three rookies at the Masters have won at Augusta, the last being Fuzzy Zoeller in 1979.

Adam Scott:

The defending champion. One of if not the best ball striker on tour. If his broomstick putter is working, Adam could take his second consecutive Green Jacket home to Down Under.

Rory McIlroy

Rory shot 65 last Sunday at Houston and that’s a good sign for him. Has all the tools to win multiple Green Jackets. He seems to be in a great place mentally and has experience here now. Just has to avoid a major mistake like the drive on No.10 in 2011, and his putter has to be working.

Philip Alfred Mickelson:

Phil has battled back and a stomach muscle pull this year and hasn’t played lights out, but Phil comes alive at Augusta. He’s a three time winner and would join Arnie and Tiger as the only four-time winners if he could pull it off this weekend. Only six players have won who were over 40 when they did: Ben Hogan, Sam Snead, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus, Ben Crenshaw and Mark O’Meara. But with Phil, it’s possible. His fourth Green Jacket and sixth major would put him in rarefied air.

Angel Cabrera:

El Pato comes alive in majors, particularly at Augusta. He’s an excellent putter in the clutch and is long and accurate. He’s got a legitimate shot.

Projected winner:

The guy I like finished second in 2011 and tied for third last year with chances to win both years, and particularly with the lead last year with four holes to play. I think he’s learned, he’s matured at 26- he’s married with a two-year old boy, and despite the fact that he’s been out seven weeks with a bad thumb, he is a relentless worker who has worked tirelessly to get himself fit physically and mentally for moments like Augusta. He hits it a ton, is accurate, and is excellent around and on the greens. As Jim Nantz said when Phil sank the putt in 2004 to win his first Masters and major, “is it his time?”  I think it is.

AT&T Stadium, Arlington, Texas (80,000+ expected)

Tipoff: 9:10 PM ET/8:10 CT

Network: CBS

Jim Nantz, Greg Anthony, Steve Kerr and the Wolf; Chuck Barkley and crew pregame, halftime and postgame

Coaches: Kevin Ollie, UConn (41, years old, 2nd year as head coach, 51-18,74%); John Calipari, UK, 22 seasons as head coach (548-171 (76%); five seasons at Kentucky: 151-36 (81%), one national title, three Final Fours. Cal is 55.

Leading scorers:

UConn: Shabaaz Napier: 17.9 ppg; 5.8 rebounds, 4.9 assists, 87% free throw percentage; DeAndre Daniels: 13.2 ppg, 6.0 rebounds; Ryan Boatright: 12.1 ppg.

Kentucky: Julius Randle: 15.1 ppg, 10.5 rbg; James Young, 14.2 ppg; Aaron Harrison: 13.9 ppg; Andrew Harrision: 10.9 ppg, 3.9 assists.

The Wildcats average 75 points per game and allow 66.8. UConn averages 71.9 ppg and gives up 63.5. The Wildcats are better offensively and the Huskies are better on defense. UConn held Florida, which beat Kentucky three times this year, to 53 points in winning their semifinal game, 63-53. Where the Huskies will really have the advantage tonight is at the free throw line. Kentucky shoots 68 percent from the line and has been pretty clutch in the tournament. I do trust the Harrison twins at the line.  Aaron is a 79 percent free throw shooter and Andrew is 76 percent. But these Huskies shot 78 percent as a team in the regular season and their numbers in the postseason have been out the roof. In the NCAA tournament, they are 91-of-105 from the line, 87%. But what’s really amazing is their free throw shooting in the last five minutes and overtime of these tournament games. They are 61 of 66 from the line in that last five minutes, 92%.

Aaron Harrison has hit three game winning shots for the Wildcats in the tournament. One against Louisville with 30 seconds left in the Sweet 16 that led UK to a 74-69 victory; one against Michigan with 2.3 seconds left to lift the Cats to a 75-72 Elite Eight victory;  and finally, and the most dramatic and highly clutch, a 26-foot three with a hand in his face and 5.7 seconds to go with the Wildcats down 73-71 Saturday night against Wisconsin. The Wildcats won 74-73 to advance to tonight’s championship.

I like these Harrison twins and Julius Randle is a good compliment to these stud guards. The Shaq-Kobe combo is a good parallel with the Randle-Harrison twins combination. Shaq helped underneath, but when it was crunch time, Kobe was the man. The same works here with Randle and the Harrisons, particularly Aaron right now. It’s been pretty awesome to watch.

While all that is sensational for Kentucky, I love Shabazz Napier and this Connecticut team. This group, led by Napier, is almost a carbon copy of the 2011 team led by Kemba Walker, who is now the starting point guard for the playoff-bound  the Charlotte Bobcats. That team won the national title. Napier is big time clutch just like Walker was, and maybe even moreso. He hits the big shots when they need them and always converts from the line when his team needs him to. He hit three clutch free throws after getting fouled shooting a three late in the Michigan State Elite Eight game that iced it. I honestly thought Michigan State was the best team in the country after their Sweet 16 victory over Virginia the Friday night before, but Napier and the Huskies just overwhelmed them in a 60-54 victory. Napier sank four free throws in the last four minutes against Florida on Saturday also.

The Huskies held Michigan State, a very good offensive team, to 54 points, and held the Gators, who were the number one team in the country entering the tournament, to 53 points. That defense and their incredibly clutch free throw shooting is going to help the Huskies win their fourth national championship in 16 years.

UConn 64, Kentucky 60

Pros doing well; our college team needs to get better

Vince Conde having a stellar year at the plate and on defense for us
David Price didn’t get the win Saturday night, but he battled after giving up four runs to the Rangers and the Rays came back to beat the Texas team, 5-4 Saturday night. After giving up four runs in the first four innings, Dave kept the Rangers at four and the Rays came back from a 4-1 deficit to get the victory. Down 4-3 in the bottom of the eighth, first baseman James Loney hit a two-run double and new closer Grant Balfour, who was with the Rays earlier in his career, finished off the game to get his first save of the season. Like Balfour a lot. Think he’s an upgrade from Fernando Rodney, who went to the Seattle Mariners. David pitched six, gave up nine hits, four earned  with no walks and six K’s. David now has allowed only one walk in 13 innings. He threw 99 pitches, 67 for strikes. He has now thrown 201 pitches, with 141 for strikes and 6o balls. That’s a 2.35:1 ratio. 2:1 is excellent on strike-balls. 2.35:1 is sensational. He’s just a strike thrower and his curve, cutter, changeup and his 92-94 MPH fastball are all clicking. He’s become such a more versatile pitcher the last two years. With his development of a very good curve and a nice changeup, that makes his fastball and cutter so much more effective. Dave now 1-0 with a 4.05 ERA. The Rangers hit him a little bit at first, but a couple of those were bloopers and not very hard hit grounders that found holes. David has a tough matchup this Friday night (April 11) in Cincy as he faces the awesome Johnny Cueto of the Reds who is 0-1 but has a 1.93 ERA and has 17 K’s in his first two outings, nine against the Mets last Saturday and eight against the Cards last Monday, opening day. Cueto can bring it, so it should be pretty epic.

Sonny got the W yesterday against the Mariners pitching six innings and giving up three runs on six hits with two walks and three K’s. Like David, he gave up some runs to the Mariners early, but only one earned. He settled down and got the last nine of 10 batters he faces in the fourth through  the sixth, and the A’s down 3-0, got a three run shot from Brandon Moss to tie it and a solo shot from Yoenis Cspedes in the bottom of the eighth. A’s beat the M’s, 6-3. Sonny threw 98 pitches, 57 for strikes. His curve ball and sinker are so exact that they can hit the dirt sometimes.  Sonny walked three and struck out seven Monday night with 105 pitches, 64 for strikes. He’s thrown 203 pitches, 121 for strikes and 82 for balls. 59% of his pitches are strikes. Sonny’s a battler; he throws some balls and has walks, but he gets it done. Sonny faces King Felix Hernandez Friday night in Seattle. King Felix has been awesome, going 2-0 with a 1.88 ERA with 19 K’s and just two walks in 14.1 innings pitched. Sonny will really have to dig deep in this one. Another epic there.

Pedro didn’t get a hit Saturday or Sunday, but was walked three times Saturday and walked and scored the winning run for the Pirates yesterday in their 2-1 victory over the Cardinals. Pedro scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh with the score tied at 1-1, He scored from first on an RBI double by first baseman Gabby Sanchez. The Bucs took two of three from the Cards in the Steel City over the weekend. The Bucs are now 4-2, the Rays are 4-3 and the A’s are 3-3. The Rays are at Kansas City for three, the Bucs are off today then go to Chicago to face the Cubbies for three and the A’s are @ Minnesota tonight, Wednesday and Thursday.

Ryan Flaherty played shortstop and got his first hit this season in the top of the ninth in an Orioles 3-1 victory over the Tigers at Detroit. Ryan singled. The O’s are 2-4 and go to the Yankees for three tonight through Wednesday. Hopefully Ryan can get that bat going so he can stay in the starting lineup. They’re moving him around from third, to second to short. He’s a very good utility player, but I really liked him as a shortstop at VU. He played with Pedro and Dave.

Our team had their struggles this weekend at Knoxville. Won Friday night, 6-4, but lost a real heartbreaker Saturday night, 9-8 and lost yesterday with probably a little bit of a hangover from the tough loss Saturday night. We lost 7-0 yesterday. Our pitching and defense really let us down Saturday as we committed five errors. The usually sure handed Dansby Swanson committed two errors. Zander Wiel got hurt in the game and it looks like he might have hyper extended his elbow. Hopefully we can get Zander back pretty soon because he’s an excellent first baseman and when he gets that bat going, he’s lethal. But we have other options without Zander and some good backups. Play a good Indiana State team that is 21-7 and has beaten top 25 team Indiana. The game is tomorrow @ 7:30 PM ET/6:30 CT and is on vucommodores.com. We play Texas A&M at home over the weekend. A&M is 19-14 and 5-7 in the SEC, but they did defeat us last year in the first game of the SEC tournament, so they’re certainly capable. We are now 25-8 and 6-6 in the conference. We are now No.11 in the Baseball America Poll. That’s the only one out right now. The others will be out soon. FSU is still No.1, Virginia, Louisiana Lafayette (are you kiddin me?)  Cal-Poly (I repeat, are you kiddin me?) and South Carolina round out the top five. SC did get swept by Arkansas at Arkansas over the weekend. Not sure how they remained in the top 5. Not so sure how trustable this BA poll is. South Carolina and Florida are 7-5 to lead the East. Kentucky and us are 6-6. Alabama leads the west at 8-4. Ole Miss is 7-5 and LSU is 6-5.

The good news is that shortstop Vince Conde is having a breakout junior season. Vinnie is now hitting .352 and leading the team in hitting. He was four-for-five Saturday night and was a triple short of hitting for the cycle. He crushed a deep one. Vinnie also has only two errors in 128 chances. Playing excellent short.

Just need  to regroup. This game against Indiana State tomorrow is critical.

Will have more baseball as the week/weekend progresses and of course, football and basketball news when it comes up. Spring game Saturday at 10 AM CT in the stadium. Should be televised by CSS on a tape delayed basis on Sunday. Will post any key recruiting news. Not visits, commits!

VU baseball Incorporated

Pedro doin' work
Pedro with not one but two long ones last night. They were beautiful. The Bull’s first one was to left, it as a bullet, in the second inning off Cardinals’ stellar pitcher Shelby Miller, who was 16-10 last year with a 3.09 ERA and helped lead the Cards to the Series. That shot was 417 feet. In the fourth, Pedro connected on a 1-2 pitch for a cannon to way out center field that did clear the park and towards the Allegheny River. It was 434 feet. Pedro was a little cold with the bat coming into the game, but when he gets going pitchers need to watch out. Love it. Bucs beat the Cards 12-2, and are playing fantastic baseball at 3-1. When those bats are on, the pitching is so good, that the Pirates are very tough to beat. Could be a very special season for Pedro and the Bucs.

Rays defeated the Rangers, 8-1. Hit well in three games this season and not so well in two. But playing good ball and are at 3-2. Like our teams, if they can both stay relatively healthy and not have any catastrophic injuries to Price, Longoria or Pedro and Andrew McCutchen, to go very deep this year, possibly meeting up in late October in the series. Dave on the hill tonight for Rays against NIck Martinez of the Rangers. This is Martinez’s first major league start. Hopefully Dave can move to 2-0 and the Rays can get some hitting going again against Martinez and the Rangers. Dave 1-0 with a 2.45 ERA after beating Toronto on opening night Monday. Sonny on the hill tomorrow for the A’s.
Excellent night for the baseball team after a tough start. Tyler gave up three runs in the first inning but settled down and Vince Conde had a huge two-run double as the Dores came back from the deficit and won 6-4 to capture the first game over the Vols at Tennessee. We moved to 25-6 on the season and 6-4 in conference. The Vols dropped to 19-9 and 3-7 on the season. Tyler settled down and went eight, giving up five hits, four earned, with two walks and six K’s. Carson came in in the ninth and got them three up three down to earn his ninth save. Looks like Corbs is going with Carson as our closer. Carson is automatic. Tyler moved to 5-3. He threw 120 pitches, 76 for strikes with 44 balls. Would like to see that ratio a little better, but he battled and earned a much needed victory. Maybe this outing is what Tyler needed to get his momentum back. Vinnie was two for four with a pair of RBIs and catcher Jason Delay was two-for-four as well. Xavier was two-for-four also with an RBI. We had nine hits and no errors. UT committed three errors. Good first night and good to get one on the road. Tonight at UT @ 6 ET/ 5 CT and will be tape delayed starting @ 7 ET/6 CT on CSS. Left hander Jared Miller (6-1, 1.73 ERA) goes for us against UT righty Hunter Martin (2-1, 1.14). Tyler Ferguson pitches tomorrow (Sunday). Tyler is 5-0 with a 1.36 ERA. Tennessee’s pitcher is to be determined. Game time tomorrow is 2 PM ET/ 1 CT and can be seen on the Vols website. I just turn the volume down and watch it.
Former VU golfer Jon Curran is -4 at the Shell Houston Open. Jon is tied for 23rd. Jon, who is 29 years old and graduated from VU in 2009, has already won on the Web.com tour this year at the Brasil Champions tournament. Jon must have gotten some sort of exemption to play on the PGA tour this week. He’s -1 for the day today through four and -4 for the tourney. Sergio is leading at -12.
Football doing well. Believe Derek is pleased so far. Quarterback race between Patton and Johnny really competitive right now and if Stephen Rivers, the LSU transfer, comes aboard this summer, could be a very interesting fall camp. Rivers not totally confirmed he’s coming to VU, but he has told the New Orleans Times-Picayune that he is coming. He said it last Saturday. Admissions needs to clear him though. Will keep you posted on that. Stephen is 6’8″, 235, so that would be a nice addition to the quarterback competition. Will know more once I watch the spring game. Pretty sure it will be tape delayed broadcasted on next Sunday, April 13th. Will have more details later. The game is scheduled for 10 AM CT next Saturday, April 12th. Interesting that we’re playing Ole Miss on Sept. 6th at LP Field in Nashville. Really fine with it. Would be nice to fill the 71,000 capacity stadium up. I don’t have a problem with the recruits not being there. I think it’s good exposure for the program. Will have more on the team this week as spring ball progresses. I think we’ll really like our defense and offensive line. Running back looks to be pretty good. Just need to get quarterback settled, probably in August, and then keep developing our wide outs. But I think we’re going to have a very physical, tough defense.
Basketball still pursuing Jackson Davis. He’s set for a visit next Friday. Jackson is the 6’8″, 215 power forward from Lexington, Ky. Would love to get Jackson to round out the class though there may be a transfer in play as well. Will keep you posted on that. Baseball doing very well both our present team and VU alums in the pros. Excited about the season!  Take care. Will be in touch.

Key holes:

No.9, 238 Par 3:

Kind of hitting through a shoot of trees with sand on the left and right. If you hit your shot on the short side to the left, it’s a difficult up and down.

No. 11, 440 Par 4

The most demanding driving hole on the course. Water guards the entire right side of the fairway landing area, while a small sand bunker sits on the left at the far end of the driving zone. The large green is protected by water on the right and deep bunkers on the left and backside.

No.15, 609 Par 5

Could be a go for for the bombers, but green guarded by bunkers on the left and right. Could be an interesting decision for guys who can really get it out there. Another large green. Scoring hole.

No.16, 199 Par 3

Exciting par 3 with a high risk-reward on Sunday with the pin on the front right. To go at the pin if you need a birdie, the player will have to clear the deep bunker on the front right side. Birdie opportunity and the guys a shot or two behind may need it. If the wind is swirling, this will make for some pretty good drama on Sunday.

N0.18,488 Par 4

This hole could determine if a guy like Jason Kokrak, who has a shot here, can get in the Masters. I watched J.B. Holmes about six years ago have the lead with the Masters within reach and hit it in the drink to lose a shot at playing at Augusta the next week. The lake borders the entire left side of the hole. A draw is not what you want here, unless you can aim to the far right of the fairway, but there is also a trap on the right side. Players may try to carry the water somewhat and cut it towards the middle of the fairway. The approach leaves little margin for error with water on the left and a big deep bunker on the right. Attacking the back left pin location on Sunday is a risky proposition, but some guys may have to do it if they want to win and they have to have it for Augusta. D. A. Points sank a 13 foot par putt to win here last year. Should be compelling on Sunday.

Contenders:

Graham DaLaet:

He’s extremely long as he is eighth on the tour in driving distance at 304 average. Got an excellent game and he’s been challenging the past two years. It’s going to happen for Graham, the 32 year old Canadian, soon. He’ll be right there with a shot to take the title on Sunday.

Charley Hoffman:

Just a really solid player who always seems to get in the hunt in the non-majors. He’s tied for 16th in driving distance at 300, and I like the bombers on this course. Pretty good putter too. The 37-year old has won twice on the tour, in 2007 at the Bob Hope Desert Classic, and in 2010 at the Deutsche Bank. It’s been a while, but I like Charley to have shot on Sunday. Fun guy too. Looks like he loves playing the game.

Jason Kokrak:

Was really tempted to pick him to win it. He’s long at 305 (ranked fifth) and was right there last year in this tournament before fading a little at the end. Solid young player at 28, will win out here soon. Maybe this weekend.

Andrew Loupe:

Finished second last week at Valero, and I’m a believer in this young 25 year old former LSU player. He’s long at 301 off the tee and has a good short game. He hung tough last week and almost pulled it out. Losing by a couple of shots to Stephen Bowdich, but this guy like DeLaet and Kokrak, has a shot to do well on the tour. This could be his week.

Projected winner:

I’m going with the guy who is second in driving distance on the tour at 309, he leads the tour in greens hit in regulation and he’s 11th in strokes gained putting. He’s already won this season at the World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions in Shanghai, China and he’s won eight times on tour, and at 29 is ready to make his mark in the majors; and that means winning one very soon, possibly this year. He suffered the heartbreak of the PGA loss in 2010 in which he was penalized two shots for hitting out of an unmarked, trampled down sand area in which he grounded his club at Whistling Straits, and lost out to Martin Kaymer. I thought he handled that penalty with as much class as you can have. He’s done well at Houston finishing tied for fourth last year. With all things being equal amongst these guys, I like the guy with the best putter to get it done. I’ll go with:

Dustin Johnson

Johnson uses his length, accuracy with his irons and putter to capture Shell Houston

After watching the Rays and the A’s in game one of their season openers….

David Price leads a highly talented starting rotation that will help lead the Rays to their first Series title
Like the Rays to beat the A’s in the ALCS and win the World Series over the Cardinals in 7.Rays starting pitching is superb, defense is spectacular and hitting explosive. David Price and the potent starting staff gets it done for the A’s this year and Evan Longoria and Wil Myers lead an explosive offense. Birmingham native Desmond Jennings set to have a big year in center. The bullpen headlined by setup man Joel Peralta and super closer Grant Belfour who came over from the A’s in the offseason. Rays to win it all. Sorry for the change, just needed a game to solidify my opinion.
