Inside VU Baseball; guys in the big leagues

DP off to an excellent start

Sonny on the hill to open up the A's 2014 season

We’re No.5 in USA Today/Coaches, 5 in NCBWA, 5 in Collegiate Baseball and seven in Baseball America. FSU is No.1 in Coaches and Baseball America, UVA is No.1 in NCBWA and South Carolina is No.1 in Baseball America. We’re 23-6 overall and 5-4 in SEC East. Florida and South Carolina lead the East at 6-3. Alabama and State lead the West at 6-3. We play UT-Martin tomorrow @ 7:30 PM ET/6:30 CT. In the Coaches Poll, LSU is No.4, Ole Miss is nine, State is 16, UK is tied for 19th with NC State and UT (Knoxville) is 21. UT Martin is 3-22 right now with their victories coming over Eastern Michigan, Murray State and Tennessee Tech. Walker Buehler will probably get the start tomorrow night. Walker is 4-1 with a 1.89 ERA along with 14 walks and 40 K’s. Walker putting up some nice numbers. Our team batting average is .286 (on the upswing) and our team ERA is 1.98. Need a good game tomorrow to get ready for UT this weekend. The UT Martin game can be seen on the vucommodores website and the Tennessee series can be seen on vucommodores on Friday night at 7:30 ET/ 6:30 CT. Saturday’s game is on CSS @ 7:30 PM ET/6:30 CT and Sunday’s game is @ 2 PM ET/1 CT on vucommodores.UT is 19-7 overall and 3-6 in conference. They took two out of three from Missouri, won one and lost two to Auburn at home and were swept by South Carolina this past weekend. Will have more on pitching matchups on Friday.

Pedro and the Bucs won today 1-0 on a bottom of the 10th walkoff homer by Neil Walker. Neil’s awesome. Such an enthusiastic team player. Loves playing baseball Pedro 0 for 4 with two K’s but turned a nice double play on a sac bunt attempt by the Cubs. He relayed a throw from third to first after Pirates pitcher got the ball to third for the force. There were runners on first and second with no outs. Just needs to get that bat going. Cubs had some pretty good pitching today as did the Pirates. Ryan Flaherty started at third for the Orioles which defeated the BoSox 2-1 in Baltimore. As I wrote earlier, Mike MInor is on the DL till about April 12th-13th then Mike should be good to go.
Now to DP: 7.1 innings, six hits, two runs (earned, two run homer in the eighth to pinch hitter Erik Kratz), with one walk and six K’s. Dave threw 102 pitches, 74 for strikes. That’s 74 strikes and 28 balls, well above the coveted 2:1 strike-ball ratio level. Rays won 9-2 over the Blue Jays of Toronto. Dave’s 1-0 with a 2.45 ERA now. Pitches again Saturday against the Rangers Nick Martinez, who I’m pretty sure is making his first big league start in Tampa. He was drafted by the Rangers in 2011. Game time is 7:10 PM ET/6:10 CT. Will have report on that on Sunday. Need to watch Dave today and will give more details tomorrow on how he looked, what he was throwing well, velocity of his heater, ect… Dave beat R.A. Dickey of the Jays today. The Rays hitters got to Dickey scoring six runs on five hits. Dickey walked six and struck out four in five innings. Good start for the club.
Sonny on the hill tonight in Oakland on opening night and Sonny faces Justin Masterson of the Indians. Masterson is 53-63 in his six year career with a 4.03 career ERA. Picked the A’s over the Cardinals in the Series on my regular blog, but I have to admit, my heart is with Dave and the Rays. Have the A’s over the Rays in the ALCS, and the Cards over the Nationals in the NLCS.  The Rays have an excellent squad though and can get this done. Just want it for Dave and the guys so much. Will have more on Sonny and Dave tomorrow or Wednesday.

Dansby Swanson is epically good
Baseball took two of three from a very good Kentucky team. Lost Friday night and won Saturday and Sunday afternoon. Tyler Beede had a little struggle Friday night and didn’t get good enough hitting and defense. Saturday and Sunday we hit a lot better and pitched well. Defense a little shaky. We have a young team. I will elaborate more on that on Wednesday. We’re still 23-6 overall and 5-4 in a logjammed SEC race right now. We’re getting better every series. This team reminds me a lot of the Kentucky basketball team. A lot of youth who are ultra talented and starting to hit their stride. Can we win on the road? We’ll get tested at Tennessee this weekend. UT has really improved. Will have a lot more thoughts on baseball on Wednesday morning. One thing I will say right now though is that Dansby Swanson, our sophomore second baseman is phenomenal. He looks like he could be SEC player of the year and could help lead us to some serious June baseball with plenty of bats around him and stellar pitching. Our defense needs to keep improving. Need to tighten up in the outfield and the infield. But there were good signs with our bats on Saturday and Sunday and our shortstop Vinnie Conde is playing excellent baseball. Vinnie is a highly clutch player for us. Excellent shortstop and I love Vinnie up at the plate with the ducks on the pond. Really liking what I’m seeing out of third baseman Xavier Turner’s bat now. Xavier is getting it going. Zander Wiel has an excellent bat, just needs to get out of a mini slump. Freshman Brian Reynolds has an excellent bat; needs to keep improving in the field. Carson Fulmer is maybe the best pitcher in the country. Would like to see Tyler Beede turn it around on Friday Nights and get back to being Tyler.

Swanson and John Norwood hit blasts with Swanson hitting his on Saturday in a 9-3 victory and John hitting his yesterday in a 6-2 win. Dansby hit his in the left corner over the outfield. “I thought it was in Corbs’ office,” Swanson said. Dansby’s was a solo shot and John’s yesterday was a two run blast. Like to see us hitting for power. We’re hitting more doubles too. Dave Price and Sonny Gray are opening day starters for the Rays and A’s respectively. Both teams with high aspirations for this season. Both will contend for the World series. Have my predictions on my regular blog. Will have full report on Dave and Sonny on Wednesday. Also, Pedro in action today for the Bucs as they host the Chicago Cubs. The Rays host Toronto this afternoon and A’s host the Indians tonight. The Baltimore Orioles open their season hosting the Bosox. Ryan Flaherty could be their starting second baseman. Mike Minor ius hurt, but should be available to start for the Braves in mid April.

Two football players committed. Four-star db Donovan Sheffield, who had committed to the Franklin staff, re-committed a week and a half ago. Donovan is the 21st ranked player in the country by Rivals. Big pickup there. Donovan is from Ensworth in Nashville. The other commit is Josh Crawford, a 5’10”, 208 pound running back out of Elmore, Alabama which is near the state capital of Montgomery. Watched film on Josh and liked him a lot. Donovan is 5′ 11`”, 175 and needs to add some weight, but hopefully his senior year he’ll grow a couple of inches and put on some more weight. I’m sure he will under Coach Hughley at VU.
Basketball still going after power forward Jackson Davis out of Lexington, Ky. If some good news pops there, will let you know. Kedren Johnson is still up in the air for next year. I’m remaining optimistic, but it’ll have to be in the fall when he comes in. He was not admitted to summer school. Hopeful that Kedren will get his ducks in a row academically and be eligible in the fall. That would really help. If not, I like Carter Josephs. He’s very savvy and smart, and if he can develop a jump shot, he’ll help us at the point. Incoming freshmen Wade Baldwin and Riley LeChance will have to step up.
Will have a lot more Wednesday.

Basketball, baseball, golf happenings

Shabazz Napier is the ultimate warrior for UConn

Andrew (above) and Aaron Harrison are prime time performers

Aaron Harrison

This is the best NCAA tournament I’ve ever seen. The games have been electric. The players have been electric. The drama has been riveting. Now we have four left after some phenomenal sweet 16 and Elite 8 games over the weekend. The Kentucky-Louisville and then Ky-Michigan games were tremendously exciting. The Harrison brothers for the Cats, Andrew and Aaron, are so incredibly clutch. When the Wildcats needed it Friday Night against Louisville, Aaron came through with a massively clutch trifecta. I also thought Pitino blew it by leaving his big man, Montrez Harrell, in the game late in the first half after Harrell committed his second foul. Harrell immediately picked up his third foul and fouled out in the final minutes of the game. Costly.

Then when they needed yesterday against Michigan in the closing seconds, twin brother Andrew came through. They are the epitome of clutch players. They just made themselves both nice contracts in the NBA for next year with their performances in the tournament. Julius Randle, the Wildcats star power forward, hasn’t hurt his cause either. But more importantly in the present, they have a shot of winning a national championship, which would be Kentucky’s ninth national championship of all time. The legendary Adolph Rupp won four. Cal is shooting for his second. Cal gets it done; without a doubt. He recruits better than anybody in the country and gets his young men to buy in as the season progresses, so by the end of the season, his freshmen laden teams are peaking. This group of freshmen he has this year, the Harrisons, Randle, Michael Young and Dakarri Johnson are peaking. What’s interesting to me is Cal has recruited really good kids to come to Lexington the last three or four years. I thought his first class with DeMarcus Cousins and John Wall were a little reckless as individuals. But the group he had two years ago with the awesome Anthony Davis and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, which won the national title, and the group he has this year, are solid, excellent kids. The chemistry is right. They are playing sensational basketball right now, especially on the offensive end, but they’re also playing pretty solid defense. But I love their offense.

Florida is playing solid defense, but my question is, can they score enough points to get it done at the end? They’re a little erratic on offense. I know defense wins championships in football, basketball and baseball (along with pitching and timely hitting), but you have to score enough to win as well. I really like Scotty Wilbekin, Florida’s point guard, but he missed some key free throws at the end of the season. I’m not sure I totally trust him at the end. Florida is a low 60 percent free throw shooing team, and while they really get it done on defense and they rebound well and score OK, their free throw shooting concerns me. If they were to face UK in the finals it would be the fourth time they’ve played them. Florida has beaten Ky all three times they’ve played. It’s proven that it is very hard to beat a team three times in a season. Beating a team four times, wow, that’s almost unheard of if the teams are pretty comparable in talent. But with the Gators defense that gives them a chance to win it all. Wisconsin, which plays Kentucky at 8:49 PM ET/7:49 CT  on CBS Saturday night in the second game is an outstanding offensive and solid defensive team. They shoot it really well, they are unbelievable passers, they play really, really solid defense and their big 7 footer Frank Kaminsky is an absolute stud. Kaminsky can score low and he can drain trifectas. UK-Wisconsin should be a classic.

Florida faces the awesome Shabazz Napier and an excellent Connecticut team in the first game at 6:09 PM ET/5:09 CT on CBS. Napier is another guy who epitomizes clutchness. Actually, I’ve never seen anything like it. Napier is a senior and is a carbon copy of what Kemba Walker did at the point guard spot for UConn three years ago when they won it all  in 2011. He’s a dominant player at point guard. If UConn needs a three, he’ll get it; if UConn needs a drive to the rim basket, he’ll get it; and if UConn needs clutch free throws, he will sink them.He was nine-for-nine from the stripe yesterday. He’s an 86 percent free throw shooter. He got fouled shooting a three late in the game against a fantastic Michigan State team and drained all three of them. UConn was 21-of-22 from the line yesterday.  That’s astounding. They are shooting 95 of 107 from the line in their last four games (89%). That’s approximate but right on their percentage.

So Saturday sets up for a classic in the best NCAA tourney I’ve ever seen.

Predictions for the Final Four:

Florida vs .UConn

Cowboys Stadium, North Texas (Jerry loves this and I don’t mean the Sugar Magnolia Jerry; I mean the Willie/Waylon Jerry-Jones).

6:09 PM ET/5:09 CT on CBS

Jim, Greg and Wolf (who else would be on the sidelines?)

I really like this UConn team. I love Napier. He is a game changer at point guard. Their other guard, Ryan Boatright, can light it up when he gets going, and DeAndre Daniels is a hoss inside and outside. He can score in the paint and he can drain threes. Niels Giffey is an excellent complimentary player to those three as he gets key rebounds, sinks key shots, and plays lock down defense. Florida is going to be shaky at the line in this one and I think that’s going to cost them. I like Napier and the Huskies to get this done with their stellar defense and their incredibly clutch free throw shooting.

UConn 72, Florida 69

Kentucky vs. Wisconsin

8:49 PM ET/7:49 CT

CBS

Jerry’s World also

I like the clutchness of this UK team. While I love what the Badgers are doing and think Bo Ryan is an all world coach, the Wildcats are hot, like UConn. The Harrison brothers will come through at crunch time. They’re like having two Kobe Bryants out there with Julius Randle being the Shaq complimentary player. I see UK moving on and facing UConn in the finals. Should be an excellent game as well.

Kentucky 75, Wisconsin 73

PGA inside thoughts:

Not sure what to think of these so called “elite” players in the tour. First, Rory Mcilroy blows a three shot lead on the back nine at the Honda Classic a month ago, then Adam Scott blows an eight shot lead last week at the Arnie. Matt Kuchar, who’s not on those two guys level but is a good player and somewhat elite, catches Stephen Bowdich at -9 yesterday at the Valero Open in San Antonio, but bogeys three of the next five holes to fall out of contention as Bowdich won the Valero. Excellent field this week for the Shell Houston as the players who want to win a green jacket have a solid tune up for Augusta. I like what Phil’s doing; he’s competing. He pulled a muscle in his stomach Saturday, so he’s questionable for the Shell Houston, but a doctor on the Golf Channel said if Phil can do some intensive rehab, he can play this week. Phil prepares. I love that about him. He’s got a shot at Augusta because he has relentlessly prepared for it. He’s 43 and knows that time is running out for him to get another green jacket and win the only major he hasn’t won, the U.S. Open, so he’s doing everything he can to win his fourth Masters and first U.S. The U.S. Open is at Pinehurst No. 2 this year and that’s where Phil lost on the 18th hole in 1999 to Payne Stewart, who sank a clutch 14 foot par putt to win. So Phil had an excellent showing at Pinehurst in ’99. Phil did the smartest thing he could have done last year before the British Open when he played in the Scottish Open the week before. He won the Scottish and then won the British the next week. Just really smart thinking there. Hopefully, he’s OK for this week’s Shell Houston, which has an awesome field. Phil has won three Masters, one British and one PGA. He’s hungry for more. Adam Scott and Brandt Snedeker are not playing this week. Really don’t understand that thinking. This is a good course and has an incredible field with everybody playing except for Scott, Tiger, Snedeker and Jason Day. Day and Woods are injured, but Scott and Snedeker don’t have any excuse not to play.  You need competition to get ready. Who knows what’s going on with Tiger? His back is not good, his Masters status is up in the air, and even if he did play, he’s not playing well enough  to win. He’s got physical issues right now and mentally he’s not getting it done either. Maybe the Nicklaus record is getting harder and harder to live up to. Can Rory or Scott get it done? Possibly, but I didn’t like what I saw in the Honda and the Arnie respectively. Maybe young Jordan Spieth or a Georgian and an excellent young player like Harris English, who has won this year, can win it. If Jason Day gets healthy, he has a shot. Will have full Augusta preview next Wednesday (April 9th). In the meantime, excellent field this weekend at Houston. Will preview on Wednesday.

Baseball thoughts, predictions:

Can the Yankees and Dodgers buy their way to the World Series? They seem to think so, but I don’t agree. I’m going with the more solid organizations that have put their teams together through some free agents, but more through their farm systems with their stellar young pitching, fantastic defense and timely, clutch hitting

I like the Oakland A’s over the Tampa Bay Rays in the AL Championship series;

like the St. Louis Cardinals over the Washington Nationals in the NLCS.

World Series:

A’s over the Cardinals in 7 in the World Series.

Moneyball gets it done. The ability to draft well, develop and

have stellar pitching gets it done this year for the Oakland A’s.

The Yankees and Dodgers will make the playoffs but lose in the second week in October. The Yankees will lose in the second round to the Rays and the Dodgers in the second round to the Nationals.

This week at Bay Hill, the Arnold Palmer Invitational

Excellent tournament, the Arnie Invitational, at Bay Hill Golf and Lodge in Orlando. Weather should be perfect with temperatures in the low 80’s tomorrow and throughout the weekend. There is a 40 percent chance of showers Saturday, but probably will pass through quickly. Wind doesn’t look to be an issue according to weather.com.

Tiger Woods has won here eight times including the past two years, which is astonishing, but he’s out with a bad back. So, it’s almost like you put 144 names in a hat and pull one out on the tour this year. Very random thing, that is which player will win each week. My favorites are Rickie Fowler, Graham DeLaet, Bubba Watson, Kevin Na and Justin Rose. I’ll pick Rosie to win. He finished second to Tiger last year here and was tied eighth last week at the Valspar Championship.

The Golf Channel and NBC will televise. 3-6 PM ET/ 2-5 CT on Thursday and Friday on Golf, and 12:30-2 PM ET/11:30 AM-1 PM CT on Saturday and Sunday on Golf. NBC has coverage from 2-6 PM ET/1-5 PM CT on Saturday and Sunday. Wonder how many 15 foot putts that break right to left or left to right will Johnny Miller call “easy.”

The 18th is the hardest hole on the course. It’s a 458 yard par 4 that doglegs left to right and the second shot has a big lake on the right and sand on the left side and in back of the green. The 18th played the toughest last year in the final round. Should be classic drama on Sunday. Should be an awesome tournament. Will be a good break from basketball at some point.

LIke Rosie, the Brit, to get it done this week in this incredibly competitive field

Baseball cruising along, excellent series last weekend, VU players in pros, basketball, quick football update, ect..

Baseball surging

Super freshmen Brian Reynolds (above) and Hayden Stone (below) along with sophomore Dansby Swanson (bottom) are leading this surging VU baseball team

Hayden Stone

Dansby Swanson

We have some stellar freshmen on this team who are making a major impact already and can help take us a long way this season. Freshman left fielder Brian Reynolds is hitting .361 with two homers, including one yesterday against Belmont in an 8-4 victory, and 21 RBIs. Brian has 10 doubles and a triple to go along with those other numbers. He’s a very good outfielder as well. Ro Coleman, a Tony Kemp look alike at the plate and on the basepaths, is another frosh who’s starting to make an impact. Ro is playing the outfield right now, but can play second although Dansby Swanson with his stellar play has that position locked down right now. Ro got off to a slow start at the plate, but belted a homer last night. Both Brian and Ro are switch hitters which is an asset. Freshman Hayden Stone has pitched 17.2 innings in relief and has been dominant. Hayden, in eight games, has an 0.51 ERA with three walks and 30 K’s. Really an awesome pitcher and just seems like a veteran on the mound and kind of has a veteran personality. Kind of like a Carson Fulmer.

As for the upperclassmen, Swanson is hitting .329 and has 11 stolen bases in 14 attempts leading off for us. Dansby plays some fantastic second base too, and made a key play last night playing third getting the third out to end the game on a heads up play to get to the bag before the runner got to third on a ground ball. Zander Wiel is hitting .32o with a homer and 12 RBIs. Zander is more of a run producer/ power guy than he has been so far, so he should start getting his power numbers up. But he’s hitting it well and playing excellent first base. And Corbs can’t ask for anything better than the job he’s getting from Vinnie Conde at short. Vinnie has committed only one error this year, made some very clutch plays at short and is hitting .319 with a homer and 15 RBIs. We are hitting .288 as a team. Would like to see that get up over .300, the bats are taking some time to get going at least with some of the guys, but as the weather keeps warming up, we’ll see the averages keep moving up and some more deep ones and run producing hits. Pitching and defense has been stellar for the most part. Watched Jared Miller pitch against LSU and was highly impressed with Jared. Throws hear and has a nice curve to go along with it. Jared looks like he’s bringing it about 93-95 MPH, he’s 5-0 with a 0.57 ERA with seven walks and 24 K’s. Tyler Beede, the leader of the staff and our Friday night starter, is having a nice season too. Tyler is 4-1 with an 0.84 ERA, with six walks and 40 K’s. Like what I’m seeing out of Tyler. Tyler lost a tough one last Friday night to LSU with some questionable defense behind him, but he pitched a good game and could have easily won it as we had a 1-0 lead late in the game. Tyler Ferguson, our Sunday starter, is 3-0 with a 1.63 ERA. Tyler struggled a little bit last Saturday night in the second game of the twin bill with LSU (weather on Sunday forced us to play two Saturday), but has been pretty good this season. Carson Fulmer is just a fun guy to watch pitch. He reminds me of David Price and Sonny Gray, guys who just really compete and to me are the most fun guys to watch pitch in baseball along with Justin Verlander, Yu Darvish, Felix Hernandez and Clayton Kershaw. I love Carson. He’s awesome. I nine games, all in relief, he’s got six saves and has a 1.12 ERA. He has walked seven and K’d 23. His fastball was hitting 97 last Saturday against LSU. Brain Miller very solid as our closer with an 0.00 ERA in 11 games, with one walk and 11 K’s.

Overall, we’re 19-3 after the victory over Belmont yesterday and after taking two of three from LSU @ home last weekend. That was our first conference series. We’re 2-1. In the polls, we’re No.3 in the USA Today Coaches Poll behind No.1 Florida State and No.2 South Carolina. We’re No.3 in Collegiate Baseball behind No.1 SC and No.2 FSU. We’re No.6 in the Baseball America Poll, behind from one to five, South Carolina, FSU, Virginia, Oregon State and Louisiana Lafayette. In the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association poll (heretofore called the NCBAWA poll) we’re No.5 behind from one to five, FSU, South Carolina, UVA and Oregon State.

We’re playing good baseball. We have State this weekend at State and they’re anywhere from No.18- No.23 in the polls; they’re a good team. They’ve had good pitching the last couple of years. Should be a challenge this weekend. Friday night’s game is @ 7:30 ET/6:30 CT and will be televised by CSS. Saturday’s game at 8:30 PM ET/7:30 CT will be on ESPNU. Sunday’s game is @ 2:30 PM ET/1:30 CT but not televised.

Little concerned with Xavier Turner’s play in the field. He’s committed six errors, but I saw him make a really nice diving stop and throw on Saturday against LSU. Xavier has a cannon for an arm; he just needs to settle down out there. He’s hitting .293 with no homers and 12 RBIs, so he can do better at the plate. Xavier is a talented player, so he should get it together.

Big weekend series at State. Should be a war all weekend. In our victory last night, Walker Buehler moved to 4-1 as our mid-week starter going six, allowing four hits, one earned, with two walks and eight K’s Walker is talented. He has a 2.03 ERA with 11 walks and 30 K’s.

In the big leagues, David, Pedro, Sonny and Ryan Flaherty are all performing well. Actually Sonny’s been struggling some so he needs a couple of more good outings to get back to being Sonny. His ERA is 6.30, so that has to improve. Still like Sonny in the Oakland A’s starting rotation when the season starts. Their opening day starter, Parker, is hurt, so if Sonny performs better from here on out, he could be the guy on opening night.

David off to an excellent start in spring training for the Rays. Dave is 2-0 with a 2.70 ERA with two walks and 15 Ks. Looking for a big year from Dave and the Rays. Looks like David will be a Ray at least for another year. He loves the Rays and the Rays love him. I wish there was a way we could keep him in Tampa for the long haul. The Rays are 12-4 in the Grapefruit League and leading it. We’ve got a shot this year to go all the way like we always do. The pitching  and defense are definitely there, just need to get some quality hitting this year. Pedro is hitting .300. He’s struck out some but has a couple of homers. Ryan Flaherty is doing a nice job for the Orioles hitting .297 and playing flawless second base. Ryan has a good shot to be the starter at second for the Birds. Mike Minor is out until April 12th, but should be ready to go then. He’s had some shoulder tightness, but Mike should be ready to go the second week in April.

Basketball:

Pretty pumped about our basketball recruiting class. Watched film on four-stars Wade Baldwin and Matthew Fisher-Davis and high three-star Riley LeChance. Wade and Riley can play the point or the two. MFD can play two or three. Wade averaged 15 and eight assists. Excellent player and kid. We’re going to really like him. He’s 6’3″, 185. Riley averaged over 20 and MFD averaged 25. All three can fill it up from the outside. Wade and MFD are excellent athletes and Riley looks like he has a very high basketball IQ. All three will help us a lot next year and in the ensuing years. MFD is 6’5″, 195 and Riley is 6’2″, 180. Our three-star small forward commit, Jeff Roberson, looks like a real good player. Very athletic at 6’6″, 210, has good hops and can finish well at the basket. Looks like a pretty good shooter too. We are in it heavily for three-star power forward Jackson Davis of Lexington, Ky. Jackson is 6’8″, 215 and can give us a lot of athletic ability, power and rebounding. Looks like a skilled player too. We had an in home visit from our coaches last night. Would love to lock down Jackson which would be an exclamation point on a stellar class. As for the present guys, Dai-Jon was playing exceptional basketball at the end of the year. Excited about what Dai-Jon can do his senior year. Damian Jones will be a force in the middle and James Siakam just needs to improve his offensive game and he can be a key player for us. Luke Kornet is going to be a very good player for us with his 7’0″ frame and his three-point shooting ability. Needs to get stronger and work on his defense, but that can happen. Like Luke’s future. Shelby Moats can help us next year. Shelby just needs some more confidence. He should be a good player for us his senior year. The walk-ons, point guard Carter Josephs and small forward Nathan Watkins proved they’ll help us too. Carter did a really nice job spelling Kyle. Smart player who doesn’t turn the ball over and makes things happen with his passing and defense. Carter can be a plus for us next year. Needs to develop an outside shot, but he’s working hard on it as assistant coach Yanni Hufnagel said he was returning from a recruiting trip two weeks ago and got in at 12:30 AM and Carter was shooting. Love that commitment. Nathan needs to work on all areas of his game, but he’s a hustler and he’s tough. If Kedren Johnson can get back on the team from suspension, that would be a huge lift. Kedren is an excellent point guard and can carry a team with his play. He and Dai-Jon in the backcourt would be highly formidable. Josh Henderson will try to come back from his terrible knee injury he suffered in December in which he tore his ACL and MCL. Brutal. If Josh can somehow make it back that would make our front court that much stronger with Josh at 6’10”, 235. Put some weight and strength on Luke and have James, Damian, Luke and Shelby underneath and we’ve got a pretty impressive front line. Add Nathan, MFD, Jeff Roberson and hopefully Jackson Davis to the mix and we’ve got a potentially excellent rebounding group. Dan Bodner of Kentucky 247 Sports Crystal Balled Jackson to us on February 23rd. Will keep you posted if that happens.

I loved how Wade Baldwin told Rivals that he saw “warriors” on this team. Even though he said the record wasn’t great, he loved the heart of this group and the fight they brought to every battle. That’s a testament to Kevin and the coaching staff along with Kyle, Rod and the guys this year. We were warriors. We fought hard every game. Glad Wade pointed that out. He said he can’t wait to be a part of that mentality next year. He will room with MFD.

Football team:

Football looks good in spring. Quarterbacks coming along. We could have a transfer quarterback, Stephen Rivers, coming our way soon. Stephen is transferring from LSU and would be immediately eligible to compete in the fall. He’s 6’8″, 235, and is Phillip Rivers brother. Philip Rivers brother. Philip, as most of you know, is the quarterback for the San Diego Chargers who had an excellent college career at North Carolina State. He’s got a lot of talent, but hasn’t achieved all he wants to on the football field. But he’s getting better in the NFL, so I think we could be getting a good player. A lot of 2015 recruits on campus this weekend for our junior day. Multiple four-stars and high three-stars. Could be some commits coming out of it. Spring ball is going well. Defense is good, secondary guys playing really well, linebacker deep and talented as is the front line. Offense will be as good as our quarterback takes us. Either Johnny McCary or Patton Robinette or possibly Stephen Rivers will determine what kind of season we have offensively. The line is loaded, Andrew Jelks is a leader according to Derek Mason. Andrew was a four-star out of high school two years ago and will play a major role on the line. We return four of five starters and there is a lot of depth. We do lose Wesley Johnson who was stellar, but there is a lot of talent. From what I’ve been reading Brian Kimbrow is doing some excellent things at running back. We’ve got BK, Jerron Seymour and a bigger back in Ralph Webb, who will be a redshirt freshman and has some size. Freshman Dallas Rivers will give us some added depth and talent. Dallas is 6’2″, 205. We might try some more guys there. C.J. Duncan, a redshirt freshman, is having a good camp at wide receiver. Some others are coming along, Jordan Cunningham, Latevius Rayford. Got some good young ones out there, just need to develop them. Tight end coming along with Steven Scheu and some others. Open with Temple, Thursday, August 28th. Time to be determined. I’m expecting us to be on ESPN or at least the Deuce. Once I hear more about practice I’ll pass it along.

Brandt, Jon Curran, VU golf:

Finally, saw an interview with Brandt on Feherty last night. If you’re not familiar with David Feherty, his show is pretty funny. The guy is totally irreverent. He’s funny. Brandt said he was “proud of myself” for winning the Fed Ex Cup two years ago and for his performance at Augusta in 2008. He needs to get more proud of himself this season as he’s been in a slump. Would kind of like it if he held off on the “proud of myself” comments.  I know golf is an individual sport and it’s just you and the course, but Brandt needs to show a little more humility in his interviews. Really like him though. He’s a great guy. Brandt is playing at the Arnie Invitational at Bay Hill Golf Course this week starting tomorrow. He tees off @ 8:11 AM ET/7:11 CT tomorrow and is playing with Bubba and Rickie Fowler. Should be a marquee group there. Would love to see Brandt get it done at Bay HIll. Big time tournament.

Jon Curran, VU 2009, won the Brasil Champions Presented by HSBC in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Jon played outstanding golf shooting 61, 64, 65 and 69. Wow! Great stuff. Jon is now second on the 25, which if he finishes in the  top 25, would get him on the tour next year. He’s made over $150K so far. Luke still out there, but needs to keep improving. Struggled so far.

The men’s golf team won the Talis Park Challenge last week and Carson Jacobs tied for low medalist honors shooting 70-73-72 in some tough condition (very windy). We won by 19 shots over Wichita State.  There were 14 teams in the field. The tournament was in Naples, Florida. Our next tournament is the Mason Rudolph Championship in Franklin, Tn.,  April 4-6th. Coach Scott Limbaugh is doing an excellent job with our golf program. Will have anything else on the other sports. Tennis is doing well both men and women.

Women’s Bball

The women’s basketball team made the NCAA tournament for the 15th year in a row. That’s awesome. They’ll face Arizona State at 11 AM ET/10 CT and the game will be on ESPN2 with some others in a wrap around coverage. We are a number eight seed and Zona State is No.9. If we win, we’ll play the Notre Dame-Robert Morris winner, which will be Notre Dame. I don’t watch much women’s college basketball, hardly any, but Notre Dame and Connecticut are in a league by themselves. But we’ll hopefully take care of business with Zona State and go from there. Might have to check it out.

I  will be in touch later on…

Bracketology 2014 thoughts

After massive research–watching an inordinate amount of games according to my wife, USA Today, ESPN, SI readings, watching the basketball experts pontificate, massive deep thinking, meditation and even prayer (kind of sad there)– here are my picks for the field of 68 in what will be an epic NCAA basketball tournament this year.
The championship game, which takes place Monday night, April 7th, in Arlington, Texas @JerryWorld-Cowboys Stadium @ 8:30 PM ET/7:30 CT on CBS, pits the two best teams and the two best coaches in the country. I picked the team and the coach who are the best in the business right now, though this should be a classic as both coaches are as good as it gets in basketball college and pro. I have the former player beating his former coach/mentor in a classic one for the ages. Without further ado, here is my bracket for this year’s stellar 2014 NCAA basketball tournament. Will be a blast. Can’t wait.

Will these two Hall of Fame college coaches, Billy Donovan (above) and Rick Pitin, be playing for it all Monday, April 7th

Valspar Championship this week

Valspar Championship

Where: Innisbrook Resort-Copperhead course (7,340 yards, par 71), Palm Harbor, Florida, just outside Tampa

Defending champion: Kevin Streelman

Winner’s share: $1,026,000

TV: Golf Channel: Thursday and Friday: 3-6 PM ET/2-5 CT; Golf: Saturday and Sunday:1-3 P<M ET/12-2 CT; NBC: Saturday and Sunday: 3-6 PM ET/2-5 CT.

Weather: Today: Sunny, windy, 63, Wind N 2o MPH; Friday: Sunny, 72, wind E 10 MPH; Saturday: Sunny 74, wind S 7 MPH; Sunday: Scattered T-storms, 50 % chance, wind S 14 MPH.

Key holes:

The “Snake Pit” 16, 17 and 18.

No. 16 is a 475 par 4 with a long lake on the right off the tee and a narrow fairway and numerous pine trees on the left. You’ve got to right to left it with a draw off the tee to get it in the fairway. Maybe a left to right cut would work, so you wouldn’t have to flirt with the water. Just depends on what you do better. The second shot requires accuracy as there is a narrow opening to a deep but angled, narrow green that has bunkers on the right and left. This is a dogleg right. Par looks like a good score here.

No.17 is 215 yard par 3 that has another deep yet narrow green surrounded by bunkers, one long one on the right, two smaller ones on the left, and one behind the green. This course requires accuracy and this hole demands it off the tee, Could be a birdie hole if you hit a good iron in, probably a five or six iron for the pros.

No.18 is a classic 445 yard par 4 with trees on both sides off the tee and a pair of bunkers on the left side. The pros second shot is uphill to an elevated green that is surrounded by traps, one of the front left which can be a bear. I saw Ernie Els three putt on 17 and 18 in 2012 to lose the tournament. It was a tough moment for Ernie afterwards, but he did come back to win the British Open that year, two years ago .

Contenders:

Harris English

Just a really fine young player who is always in the hunt. Excellent ball striker and accurate with length. Putting is always the difference in tournaments and if Harris can drive it accurately, which this course requires, and have 27 or so putts each day, this Georgia Bulldawg could very well be in the winner’s circle on Saturday.

Jason Dufner:

Duf is one of the best ball strikers on the tour. In the PGA last year when he won, he was stickin it three feet it seemed like on many of his approaches. Duf struggled with the putter last week, missing three or four 4 footers for par, but if his putter can cooperate, Duf, the Auburn Tiger, could find himself right there on Sunday with a chance to win the championship.

Brandt Snedeker:

Brandt has really struggled this season, but he’s too good to have this continue. He showed signs of playing better last week at Doral and I think he’s ready to break out and have a good tournament. His driving accuracy is good, his putter can be the best in golf when he’s got it going and his chipping has improved exponentially over the past three years. If Brandt can drive it well and sink a lot of putts, the Vanderbilt Commodore could get it done.

Luke Donald:

Luke played better last week in Doral finishing T-25, but shot a 69 on Sunday. Luke is not long, but he’s very accurate which is a must at Copperhead, and when that putter is going, he and Sneds are the two of the four best in the game along with Tiger, when he’s playing well, and Matt Kuchar. If Luke has both those elements of his game working he’ll be right there with a shot to take the championship.

Predicted winner:

Matt Kuchar

Kuuuuch finished tied 13th last week shooting 69, 74,74,74, but it looks like he’s getting it together, and he’s got it all: excellent driver of the ball, excellent iron game and nice chipper and outstanding putter when he’s got it going. I like the Georgia Tech alum to hoist the Valspar Championship trophy on Sunday.

Kuuuch drives it and putts it to the championship this week

The 2012 winner.

Dai-Jon (right), Rod try to get it done in the Dome

Zander Wiel packs some heat at the plate

The bball team finished 15-15 overall and 7-11 in conference after a couple of losses to LSU at home and @ Ole Miss respectively. We had a good chance of winning both those games as we had a double digit lead on LSU in the first half and an eight point lead in the second half against Ole Miss. Both of them got away at the end though. But I thought we played well for most of both of those games. Dai-Jon was awesome on Saturday hitting four trifectas and scoring 23. His offensive game has really come along. DJP was a four-star player coming out of high school and he’s been playing that way lately. Excited to see him play next year as a senior. He should be awesome. There is a good chance we’ll have Kedren back next year and with Kede and DJP as our starting backcourt and walk-on Carter Josephs, who’s been stellar in a backup role to Kyle this season, the freshmen, who are two four-stars and a three star, we should be pretty solid in the backcourt. These incoming freshmen lit it up their senior years this past season. Wade Baldwin is a point guard and he averaged 15 points and eight assists. Wade is a four star by 247 and a four-star by Rivals. Wade has good height for a point guard at 6’3″, 180. Matthew Fisher-Davis, a four-star by Rivals and high three-star by 247, is an absolute stud offensive player. He averaged roughly 25 points per game. Excellent rebounding guard too, at about seven per game. Matthew is 6″5″, Matthew is 6’5″, 175. Wade is from Jersey and Matthew is from Matthews, NC. Our third guard signee is Riley LeChance from Wisconsin.  Riley is a three-star by Rivals and a four-star by 247. Riley is another sharp shooter, averaging 23 per game. Excellent three-point shooter. Riley is 6’2″, 160, so needs to gain some weight which he’ll do. And this breaking: we just received a commit from 6’6″, three star small forward Jeff Roberson! I don’t have numbers on Jeff-he’s from Houston–but watched him on film and liked what I saw. Looks like he’ll give us some help on the boards, looks like a good defender and can shoot it from the perimeter. So this is an excellent class. We very well might add one more. Signing time for the late period is in April, so we’ll get Jeff signed up then and hopefully add a power forward. The other three are signed up. There’s a big boy out of Kentucky who we’re interested in. Can’t recall his name, but he’d be a good addition. About 6’8″-9ish 215. Looks like he could really help us. Will work on getting his name and get it to you as soon as I can find it. Inside for next year, we’ve got Damian coming back as a sophomore and he’s special. Damian has had some good games, but still learning the college game and banging with the big boys of the SEC. Damian is 6’`10″ 230 and he’ll get stronger in the offseason. I expect him to be an excellent player for us next year. He’s been good this year. We’ll have Luke Kornet back next year and he’ll get stronger in the offseason. Luke just needs to add 15-20 pounds to his frame and he’ll be stellar. Already shown signs of being an excellent player for us. He can hit the 10 footer inside at 7’0″ tall and can stroke it from deep. Excited about Damian and Luke next year. Shelby Moats will be back and I think Shelby will have a solid senior season. Shelby keeps getting more confident this year and it’s showing by much improved play through  the course of this season. Very hopeful Josh Hendo will be back next year. Josh (Henderson) suffered a very tough knee injury in December in which he tore his anterior and posterior ligaments in his knee. Tough. He is a highly skilled player and a hard worker though, so Josh could very well be a key contributor on the team next year. And finally walk-on Nathan Watkins has shown a lot of hustle and promise towards the end of this season. Nathan can help us. He’s tough, a good shooter and a valuable player. It’s pretty cool that we’ve had a short bench this year because we’ve discovered two good players in Carter and Nathan. They can really help us next year. Coach Hufnagel was returning from a recruiting trip two weeks ago and Carter was in the gym at 12:30 AM shooting. Love it.

Now to the rest of this season. Don’t want Rod and Kyle to go out without a fight. Have State tomorrow night @ approximately 9:30 ET/8:30 CT or 30 minutes after t he Auburn-SC game which starts at 7 PM ET/6 CT at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. Just want Kyle and Rod to have a lot of success in this tourney before they finish their careers. Heck I want to win this thing. You never know. Don’t ever want to think differently. We have good players who’ve battled all year and deserve to have success in this tournament. I think the guys will be charged up. Let’s just take care of business with State and go from there.

Baseball ranked No.3 in the USA Today Coaches Poll and in the top seven in Baseball America, Collegiate Baseball and National College Baseball Writers Association polls. Good stuff there. Pitching extremely well. Our weekend starters, Tyler Beede, Jared Miller and Tyler Ferguson have been lights out. Jared is 4-0 with a 0.36 ERA with six walks and 22 K’s, Tyler is 4-0 with a 1.08 ERA, five bbs and 33 K’s and Tyler is 3-0 with a 1.50 ERA with six walks and 22 K’s. Incredible stuff. Our bullpen has been sensational led by the awesome Carson Fulmer and the always dependable and stellar Brian Miller. Just need to shore up our mid-week pitching though Walker Buehler and some others are highly capable. This pitching staff is unreal. Right now South Carolina is one and FSU is two in every poll. Our defense has been fantastic. Vinnie Conde is really playing killer short. Vinnie’s a stud. Big Z, Xavier Turner doing a nice job at third and Zander Wiel and Dansby Swanson are excellent at first and second respectively. Excellent article on Zander and his dad, Randy, on vucommodores.com. Zander is an awesome kid and an outstanding baseball player. After having a good frosh campaign with the bat, Zander is hitting .316 with 10 RBIs and seven doubles. He’s got great power. Outfield has a ton of talent. We’re loaded there. Bats have been good this year. As the weather warms up, we’ll have some exceptional hitting. Like the makeup of the guys at the plate. We can hit, hit for power and run. Zander’s father, Randy, was an assistant coach at North Carolina under Dean Smith when I was working for the Durham Morning Herald in the late 80’s, living in Chapel Hill. Randy was a really nice man. He’s originally from Jamaica. I’m sure he still is. Coached at some head jobs and had some great success over in Europe. He’s now back home in Murfreesboro watching Zander compete on the diamond. Sure he’s liking what he’s seeing out of his son. Zander is awesome. Guys like Kyle Smith, John Norwood, Rhett Weisman and awesome freshman Brian Reynolds are really going to give us some good hitting and slugging this year. They already are. Chris Harvey is getting better and better behind the plate and he’s got a stick now. Chris gives us a lot of good hitting and good power. Like him a lot. His backups are pretty good too.

Ok, so we’ve got Eastern Illinois tonight at 6:30. They’re 3-12, but we need a good outing by Walker if he’s on the hill and just a good game to get ready for the Bengal Tigers this weekend @ home. LSU is in the top six in a couple of polls and three in Collegiate Baseball and eight in Baseball America, so they’re obviously for real again. Take care of business tonight and LSU games this weekend are @ 7:30 PM ET/6:30 CT on Friday on vucommodores.com to watch, 3:15 PM ET/2:15 CT on Fox Sports Net/South on Saturday and 2 PM ET/1CT on Sunday on vucommodores.com-watch button. Excellent test for the team this weekend. But first things first. Need to get it done tonight. I’m hoping I have a conflict Saturday with basketball and baseball. Could happen.

Just figured it out: the kid from Lexington, Ky is Jackson Davis. Jackson is 6’8″, 210. Would be a great cap off to this class. He’s got a lot of offers from some pretty good programs, but feel like we’ve got a pretty good shot. Will keep you in the loop on that. Also, spring practice about to start crankin. Will keep you informed on that as well. Exciting with the Derek Mason era beginning.

Will be in touch.

“The Donald” hosts a huge tournament this weekend at Doral

Donald Trump bought the Blue Monster two years ago and had designer Gil Hanse redesign it last year. The new and improved Blue Monster is now called Trump National and it’s a bear. The top 50 players in the world descend on Doral this weekend in Miami at the World Golf Championships-Cadillac Championship. Tiger Woods will be there to defend his title– he’s won four times at Doral– but Woods is having back spasms. His attempt in the offseason to “reorganize my body” isn’t working out that swiftly. I don’t like his chances. Sean Foley, his swing coach, does not seem to be working out that well for him. He seems pretty mechanical rather than free-swinging, loose. Butch Harmon was Woods’ best bet, but Woods fired him several years ago. Then he fired Hank Haney with whom he had won multiple majors. Sean Foley does not seem to be the answer for Woods. And the competition has caught up, and in quite a few cases, has surpassed him. There’s not this fear of Eldrick like  there has been in the past. He’s gotten better on the course as far as his demeanor–as long as he doesn’t let his language fly again in front of eight year old boys– but he’s not getting it done. What bothers me is that if he shoots one 65, like he did last Saturday at the Honda, he’s “back in the hunt” according to ESPN, the Golf Channel and SI.com. Are you kiddin me? He was seven shots back. These national media outlets have no objectivity when it comes to him. They are like total suck-ups to him. They want him to do well for ratings or whatever there motivation is. I don’t know why that is. He’s been a non-story all year. His game is not interesting right now. Rory, Adam Scott, Jordan Spieth, Jason Day, Zach Johnson, Russell Henley, Jimmy Walker and some others are the story. Not Tiger. So the national media needs to get over their obsession with  the guy because he’s not gettin it done.
Anyway, Rory had a good shot to close the deal last week at the Honda and just gagged, shooting a 74 on Sunday. Russell Henley, the Georgia Dawg alum, made the putts when he needed to. Russell seems like a great kid. A friend of mine told me that he talked to an agent who is a friend of his, and the agent said that this is an era of one major winners we are now in. I’m not sure about that. There are some elite guys like Rory, Scott, Justin Rose, Day and even Phil and others who could get it done multiple times. Will Woods win a major this year and get to 15, inching closer to Jack’s record of 18? I’m not seeing it right now. I’m not sure at this rate if he can win a regular event this season. He’s won four times at Augusta, so that’s possible. The U.S. is at Pinehurst No.2, the British is at Royal Liverpool golf  club and the PGA Championship is at Valhalla in Louisville, Ky. where he won over Bob May in a playoff at the  2000 PGA Championship. So there are opportunities. But right now, I’m not seeing the game that can win majors. Plus, the competition is fierce. Phil is still a factor. Ernie might capture another British.  Young guys like Day, Spieth, Henley and Harris English are right there. There’s Rory, Adam, Justin Rose, Webb Simpson, Zach Johnson, Matt Kuchar Brandt Snedeker (if he can get it together) who can all get it done in a major. So it’s not a given for Woods to win even another major. He’s not playing well and the competition has caught up, and in several cases, gotten ahead of him.

This Florida leg is fun to watch and the majors are going to be epic.

Here’s a look at this week’s Cadillac Championship at Doral, the Blue Monster. Highly challenging test for golf’s top 50 players in the world and some others who met the qualifications to play in this elite event.

The World Golf Championships-Cadillac Championship

Course: Trump National (“The Donald” carries a four handicap, but I’ve heard he may bend a few rules on the links to :”save” some strokes; wouldn’t doubt it), The Blue Monster at Doral, Miami, Florida

Yardage/Par: 7,481 yards, Par 72

Defending champion: Eldrick Woods

Purse $9,000,000; winners share: $1.5 million

Fed Ex points 550

Fed Ex leaders: 1. Jimmy Walker: 1,830 points (has won three times this year, wow!), 2. Dustin Johnson: 1,206 (won HSBC World Golf Championship in November in Shanghi) 3. Harris English: 1,116 (the Georgia Dawg won in Mexico in November), 4. Chris Kirk, 1,017 (won the McGladrey Classic in November), 5. Bubba 982 (won the Northern Trust Open at Riviera CC in LA).

TV this week/weekend: Thursday-Friday: Golf Channel 1-6 PM ET/12-5 CT; Saturday: Golf Channel: Noon-2 PM ET/11AM-1 CT; NBC: 2-6 PM ET/1-5 CT; Sunday: Golf Channel: 1-3 PM ET/12-2 CT; NBC: 3-7 PM ET/ 2-6 CT.

Weather: Strong storms predicted today; Friday: 82 Partly cloudy, wind 16 MPH; Saturday: 77 Partly cloudy, wind 9 MPH; Sunday: 80 Partly cloudy, wind 7 MPH.

Key holes:

No.1

Now a 578 par 5 after being a par four in the original design. The green has been moved back 70 yards. Trees to the right along with a bunker. Players will have to decide if they want to go for this green in two or and risk going in the trap in front of the green about 50 yards away from the front of the green. There are two bunkers on the left by the green and water on the right. Tricky hole here. Pin locations can make it really tough especially a back right.

N0. 6: Par 4, 430

The drive on this hole needs to be a cut off the fairway bunker. There is the a pretty long bunker on the left and two smaller ones on the right. Driving accuracy is at a premium. The second shot will have to be worked right to left (draw) to reach the green which is angled away from the players. There’s sand on both sides of the green. A back left corner pin will be very challenging. This course is tough!

No.1o, 608 yards, par 5

Now this is a serious golf hole. There’s a lake  that looks like it extends 350-75 yards on the left side of the hole that the players are going to have to carry to get in the fairway. There is some bunkering on the right. An accurate cut is at a premium here. This looks like a layup for most. A player’s  third shot will encounter trees on the right and four bunkers surrounding the green On your second shot, you’re going to have to keep from drawing it or it’s going to go in the water. Green is medium sized. Birdies will be good scores here. There may be some guys like Bubba and Dustin Johnson, the bombers, who will go for it in two, but it’ll be a high risk shot. Most players will play it safe and make it a three shot hole and play for birdie.

Holes 15-18

Highly challenging final four holes that will lead to terrific theater on Sunday. 15 is a 153 yard par 3 with a peninsula green that has water to the side and back. There’s also a sand trap on the right that could cause problems. No.16 is a driveable 340 yard par four, but there is danger in trying to drive it. There’s plenty of lake on the left side along with sand all around the green, although getting in the sand may not be a bad idea for these guys who can mostly play out of the sand very well. But the water is very close to the green. Any mishit and you’re wet. The green is shaped like a kidney. Challenging with a high risk/reward here. No.17 is a 430 yard par four and looks to be a good opportunity for a birdie which could be clutch late on Sunday. The drive is pretty straight forward, but the key is hitting a left to right drive and to get it in the fairway,m there is sand on the left and sand and some tree problems on the right. The green is surrounded by three pretty long bunkers but looks attainable. A birdie here would be a nice way to enter the difficult 18th on Sunday for the leader or co-leaders.

No.18

One of the few holes that wasn’t changed. It’s an epic par 4, 473 yards. Water runs down the left side from virtually the tee to the green. A hooked shot and you’re in the drink. There are trees on the right. Talk about the need for accuracy off the tee. This hole demands it. It seems like every player hits it right and into the rough and has some possible tree problems because they DO NOT want to go left. The second shot requires extreme accuracy as you’re dealing with the water in front of and to the left of the green, traps to the right and the grandstand behind the green. This shot will really test the players’ nerves on Sunday. A par here is a good score. This whole is a beast and gave the Blue Monster its name. This is a monster hole in difficulty.

The picks:

1. Harris English:

Leads the tour in top 10 finishes. A fine player at age 24. The future is ultra bright for the young player from Valdosta, Georgia. Some good high school football played in Valdosta. Got some pretty good golf there too.

2. Adam Scott:

Adam won twice  in Australia last fall winning the Australian PGA and the Australian Masters. For some reason, I feel like Australian courses are similar to Florida courses. Adam had an awesome season last year winning at Augusta and the Barclays in the FedEx playoffs. He finished tied 3rd here last year shooting a 64.

3. Webb Simpson:

Webb is second on the tour in strokes gained putting and seventh in scrambling. Those stats will serve him well this week. Won last October in Vegas and is a 2012 U.S. Open champion, so he’s pretty good under pressure.

4. Zach Johnson:

Leads the tour in driving accuracy percentage which is huge on the Blue Monster. Putts well when he’s got it going and has a good short game overall. Zach could be right there on Sunday.

5. Billy Horschel:

Great competitor. High intensity, energy guy. Won the Zurich Classic N’awlins last year and has been in the hunt some this season. Nice player overall and a gritty competitor.

The winner:

Adam Scott

Adam is playing lights out golf and won the Players back in 2004, which is a while ago, but I like his ability to play these high intensity courses with the biggest names in golf in the field. After his win at Augusta last year, I’m a believer in the 33 year old Australian under pressure. Like Adam to conquer ” The Donald” this week.

Looking for Adam to get it done this week at Doral
