Brandt, bball, recruiting

Brandt's putter was en fuego today

Derek trying to finish strong with this class with a lot of prospects in town

Brandt shoots 64 today (-7) to move into a tie for sixth at the Waste Management Phoenix Open. Brandt carded seven birdies and no bogeys on TPC Scottsdale. He is -8 for the tourney. He finished second here to Phil last year before winning the AT&T Pebble Beach tournament the next week. Bubba Watson and Matt Jones are finished and lead the tournament at -12. Hideki Matsuyama is @ -9 and on No.14. Great course with the awesome stadium hole on 16 which is like being in Soldier Field on a Sunday with the Bears playing the Packers. The crowd on 16 must be 20,000 in stands surrounding the hole. They go wild over good shots. Brandt’s putter was definitely working today. I’m guessing, but I’d say he had 26 putts today. Will get confirmation on that this afternoon. The PGA doesn’t provide  that stat any more instead they use strokes gained putting.Yesterday Brandt had a -2.937 strokes gained putting number and today it was 4.787, a huge number. Overall, he’s 36th in the field, but today his number was the best in the tournament. So B will be right there this weekend. Good to see him back and playing well. Will keep you posted over the weekend.

Bball has had a couple of excellent victories on the road @ A&M last Saturday, 66-55, in a game where James Siakam scored 22 and pulled down 10. Kyle had 19 and four assists. Then Wednesday, we went to Georgia in those terrible traveling conditions, got hung up in Greenville, SC, and didn’t have a shootaround the day before, and still came out with the 59-54 victory. Rod finished with 16 points and 12 boards, that was a great night for Rod on the glass. We need that from him to give James, Damian, Luke and Shelby some help underneath. Dai-Jon had 15 and seven boards along with four assists and Kyle had 13 and four assists. We stuck with Georgia, a good rebounding team, on the glass. They only outrebounded us 38-35. We were 14 of 20 from the line at the end of the game. We only shot 65% from the line, but hit some key ones. We’re 11th in the SEC in free throw shooting at 66%, but we’re getting better. Kyle shoots 78%, he’s been our most consistent player this season along with Rod. Both are seniors.

Missouri leads the league at 72%. The league is better this year than it has been the past four-five years with more high quality teams in Florida (a Final Four contender), Kentucky (pretty good, but the freshmen are not there yet), Missouri (really a nice club), LSU (like this team a lot), Tennessee (very physical and pretty skilled, and Arkansas at times, especially at home though Missouri beat them last week at Bud Walton. We’re now 11-8 overall and 3-4 in the SEC. We play MIssissippi State tomorrow @ home tomorrow at 5 PM ET/4 CT on Fox Sports South then the Vawls come into town Wednesday (Feb. 5, signing day) @ 8 PM ET/7 CT on ESPN3. Wish that game had made a network game. Seems like it should especially if us and the Vols win tomorrow. UT plays at Alabama tomorrow at 9 PM ET/8 CT on  the Deuce (ESPN2). I hope Alabama wins for Coach Anthony Grant’s sake. He’s such a good guy and is he ever catching some heat down there. They’ve struggled this year and he is hearing it from the fans. They’re a pretty difficult group at times when they’re not winning, so I hope AG can get the W tomorrow. UT is 13-7 overall and 3-2 in the SEC. My Final Four which I posted on the regular blog is Florida, Louisville, Kansas and Zona. That’s the pick as long as there are not injuries. The other teams to look for are the Cuse, Michigan, Cincy (which beat the Ville last night at Ville-they’re good), Wichita State and, as always, Michigan State, if they can get their big men healthy, which they are in the process of doing, at least Adreian Payne, their talented 6’10”, center. The other guy, Branden Dawson, a 6′”6 small forward, will be out a little longer. But if they are healthy come March, they’re very dangerous. So I’ll try to hold firm to those Final Four picks, but if injuries occur, may have to adjust.

Huge recruiting weekend this weekend on campus as Derek and the staff make a final push to round out this class. There will be 15-16 recruits on campus and we have two silent commits that haven’t gone public yet. Will let you know as soon as I have their names. The highest ranked recruit in Vandy history, 5.9 four-star defensive end Nifae Lealao, a 6’5″, 280 defensive end, would be a huge land for Derek and his staff. Nifae is from California and our defensive line coach Vavae Tata has an inroad with Nifae. It is believed that NIfae, a soft California verbal, is on campus this weekend. Would be tremendous. Another guy who we’ve been all over, 5.7 three-star wide out Trevon Lee, is at Duke this weekend, so that’ll come down to the wire. Trevon was on campus last weekend. Will report when anything transpires and anyone pops and the silents come out. Exciting stuff Derek and his staff have going on. Looking for a late recruiting flurry to round out a solid class. We have nine committed prospects right now, including four-star dbs Trent Sherfield and Emmanuel Smith. We lost a couple this week. Four-star db Kyle Gibson changed to Central Florida. Kyle is from that area and the son of his high school football coach is a coach at UCF. We lost an offensive linemen, Jesse Burkett, to Stanford as well. But this weekend looks promising and we should end up with a solid class. Will keep you informed.

Super Bowl 48, some other observations

It could come down to Manning versus Sherman

richard sherman

At MetLife Stadium (82,566) in East Rutherford, New Jersey @ 6:30 PM ET/5:30 CT for kickoff. Fox will be broadcasting with Joe and Troy on the call, and Pam and EA reporting from the sidelines. The Broncos are a 2 1/2 point favorite.

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie wants to make sure everyone knows the game is in New Jersey. Hopefully he doesn’t mess up the traffic flow by closing some bridges down like he’s done before to New Jersey natives. Would jeopardize his 2016 run for president. Maybe that would be a good thing as long as Hillary messes up too and we can get somebody better in the office.

There is no doubt this game is about Peyton and the Broncos offense versus Sherman and the Seahawks defense though Marshawn Lynch will have a say in matters as well.

Peyton had a monster year this year throwing for 5,477 yards, completing 450 of 659 passes (68.3%) with an NFL record 55 touchdowns (along with the yardage) and 10 ints. It was an all world year even for Peyton. The Broncos have weaponry on the outside with Demaryius Thomas (92-1,430, 14 TDs), Eric Decker (87-1,288, 11 TDs), Julius Thomas (65-788, 12 TDs) and Wes Welker (73-778, 10 TDs). Knowshon Moreno has rushed for 1,038 yards and 10 TDs. The Broncos played some pretty good defense against the Patriots in the AFC title game too. Shaun Phillips leads the defense with 10 sacks. The defense has really been banged up this year, but they’ve persevered under stellar defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio and head coach John Fox, a defensive guru.

The Seahawks are about the running game and defense and that’s usually a pretty good formula for winning. Lynch has rushed for 1,267 yards and 12 TDs. Russell Wilson has completed 257 of 407 passes for 3,357 yards, 26 TDs and nine ints. Golden Tate leads the receiving corps with 64 catches for 898 yards and five TDs. Doug Baldwin is an excellent player/gamebreaker, who’s caught 50 passes for 778 yards and five TDs. Percy Harvin, who has been limited this year with injuries, is expected to play. That could help the Seahawks if he’s not too rusty.

But it’s Lynch and the defense that makes the Seahawks a potential Super Bowl champion. Sherman, for all his talking, is an outstanding football player. He has eight interceptions on the season. Earl Thomas has five and Byron Maxwell has four. They led the NFL in interceptions this season with 28 and lead the league in turnover margin also.  And they have a fine front seven as well. Pete Carroll and first year coordinator Dan Quinn can really coach defense, so Peyton is going to have to figure out ways to throw underneath with crossing routes and the Broncos need to run the football effectively some too to loosen up the Seahawks defense.

Bruno Mars will be performing at halftime, and while he’s a little effeminate for me, he’s a pretty fun entertainer overall. So he’ll be fine. Watched the Budweiser commercial for the Super Bowl last night on Youtube. It’s fantastic. Commercials should be fun and entertaining with most likely some weird ones. GoDaddy I’m sure will be weird.

As for my prediction, I’m going to use the immortal words of famous poet Jay Jacobs (also Auburn athletic director0 and say it would be “Un-American” to pick against Peyton like it was “Un-American” to keep Auburn out of the national championship game. I can’t go against Peyton. The guy’s too great. Peyton and the Broncos get it done and Peyton captures his second Super Bowl and starts to solidify his place in history as possibly the greatest quarterback of all time.

Peyton 31, Seahawks 28

Couple of other notes:

Got Pat Perez winning the  Waste Management Phoenix Open. He finished in a five way tie for second last week at the Farmers Insurance Open and he’s an Arizona State grad, so I like his chances at home. The 16th hole is the stadium hole par three at the Waste Management on TPC Scottsdale in Scottsdale, Arizona (just outside of Phoenix). It’s a 162 yard par 3 and makes for epic theater with what looks like 20-25,000 fans in the stands surrounding the whole and cheering wildly for each shot each player hits. It’s like Lambeau or Soldier Field. It’s pretty awesome stuff. Played as the third hardest hole on the course yesterday, but there were some incredible shots there like Graham DeLaet’s shot that he hit two feet from the hole and Bubba Watson’s tee shot that landed eight feet over the hole and checked up. Bubba sank his birdie putt and is one shot back today at -8. Matt Jones is leading at -9 through four.

Like Rory to win Omega Dubai Desert Classic in the United Arab Emirates. I think that’s around Saudi Arabia. Tiger playing with him these first two rounds. I didn’t watch the second round yet, but Rory was at -9 and leading after yesterday. Rory with a beautiful eagle on the backside. Played terrific golf.

Alabama and Auburn want new coaches in basketball. I’m hearing rumblings for Pearl. I’m not a big fan of Pearl as a person, but Alabama and Auburn want to win, so he may get a job at one of those places. Really like Anthony Grant personally. Wish he could make a run, but it’s looking bleaker and bleaker for him. Tony Barbee has struggled at Auburn. It’s hard to win at football schools as a basketball coach, particularly at schools so into their football like Alabama and Auburn. But both schools want better results and they’re not getting them though Auburn beat Bama last night in the Jungle on the Plains. I would like to give each coach the rest of the season before finalizing judgment, but not looking that swift right now for either coach.

Bama got another jolt to an excellent recruiting class when five star Hoover HIgh School cornerback Marlon Humphrey (6’1″, 175) committed to the Tide yesterday. Alabama and Auburn are now waiting on five-star Auburn High linebacker Rashaan Evans to make his decision. Evans is 6’3″, 220 and he’ll probably change his mind 20 times in the next five days, but he’s an Auburn lean at this time. Alabama in it for five star wideout Malazhi Dupree as well. Dupree from New Orleans is 6’2 1/2″, 187 pounds. Alabama leads the country in recruiting according to 247 sports and Rivals. 247 has Alabama with five, 5 star recruits: Da’Shawn Hand, a 6’4″, 265 pound defensive end out of Virginia, Humphrey, Cameron Robinson, a 6’&’, 335 pound offensive tackle, Tony Brown, a 6’0″, 188 pound dback, who’s gotten in trouble already as he and Robinso are already on campus as two of the eight early enrollees, and the other five star is 6’2″, 225 pound Bradenton, Florida by way of Tuscaloosa athlete Bo Scarbrough. Scarbrough transferred from a Tuscaloosa High School to Bradenton, some factory down there. Anyway quite a class for the Tide. Evans and Dupree would make it maybe the best recruiting class of all time. It still may be if just Dupree commits.

Meanwhile, AU has the seventh best class in the country. Five-star wide receiver D’haquille Williams (6’3″, 213) is already enrolled. Williams is a junior college transfer from Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. Roc Thomas is the other five star for the Tigers. Thomas (5’11”, 206) is from Oxford, Al. and is an absolute stud. Watched film on him. Thomas is actually a four-star in the 247 composite rankings which are the measure that 247 uses to label four and five stars as opposed to their regular rankings. It’s a more specialized number. But Thomes is fantastic,. Highly impressed. Another key get is five-star linebacker Tre’ Williams (6″3″, 237) out of Mobile. Will watch more film on these guys over the weekend and give a more detailed report Tuesday, the day before signing day. Exciting times for Alabama and Auburn fans. Ohio State is No.3 in 247 team rankings, A&M is three, LSU is four and Florida State is five. Tennessee is six, then AU, Georgia is eighth, Notre Dame is ninth and Florida is 10th.

Kevin Durant is otherworldly good. He hasn’t gotten the publicity that LeBron has, and Lebron deserves it as he’s won two NBA titles in a row, but he proved he’s the best basketball player on Earth with his 33 point performance against the Heat on Wednesday Night with LeBron guarding him. He was hitting 30 foot 3’s; it was epically good. He led his team to a 112-95 victory over LeBron and the Heat in Miami. I picked the OKC to beat the Indiana Pacers in the championship this year. Think the Pacers are going to get the Heat in the finals of the Eastern Conference playoffs, but the Thunder to win it all. The Thunder have the best record in basketball (37-10) and they’re doing it all without their star point guard Russell Westbrook, who’s been sidelined for a month and a half with injury. Westbrook is coming back soon. Like this Thunder team to win it all. Durant is a first class guy as well.

My final four last week was MIchigan State,’ Zona, Louisville and Florida and I’m sticking with it, but Wichita State and MIchigan are looking pretty good right now too. Can’t count out Wichita State, Kansas or Duke either. And of course not Syracuse. But like the first four teams I listed to be my Final Four in my blog bracket. I’ll hold to that barring any major injuries on any of those four teams,. Cincinnati is a really fine team as well as is Villanova. Cincy knocked off the Ville at home last night. Looked very good doing it too. Florida looks like the best in the SEC with Missouri, LSU and Kentucky as the other contenders and Tennessee is in there as well. Pretty good year for the conference. Some are saying it’s down, but I actually think the conference is better than it has been for the last four or five years in terms of quality teams. There are some weaker teams in the lower half of the conference but those teams I listed above are good basketball teams. Florida looks like the best. The Big Ten is the best conference with the ACC, Big 12 and Pac 12 right behind.

Commit in, guys bball with huge win; girls on the hardwood today

Commit No.10, Khari Blasingame
Number 10 as Derek Mason builds back up the recruiting class. Three-star defensive back Khari Blasingame, a 6’1″, 203 pound safety out of New Market, Alabama (Buckhorn High School), committed last night on his official visit to VU. Khari had committed to Minnesota in December, but informed the Minnesota coaches last night that he had changed to VU. As a senior, Khari recorded 74 tackles, 58 unassisted, with two interceptions and a fumble recovery on defense. As a running back, he ran for 1,163 yards and 10 TDs. Good pickup here. Khari could be a running back for us as we need some bigger guys at the RB position, though Jerron Seymour and Biran Kimbrow give us toughness and go the distance speed. Really like Jerron and Brian is coming along. Upcoming redshirt freshman Ralph Webb looked pretty powerful on film at 5’10”, 190 and Jerron is at 200 and Kimbrow will probably be 190-195 by the start of the season next year with speed to go the distance anytime be breaks through the line of scrimmage. Kimbrow is a 4.4 guy. Also in this class, high three-star running back Dallas Rvers, a 6’0″, 200 pounder from Stone Mountain, Georgia, will help immensely in the coming years. Good size and speed. If Khari stays in the secondary, we have an outstanding secondary class with four-stars Kyle Gibson, Emmanuel Smith and solid to high three-stars Trent Sherfield, Bryce Lewis and Tre Herndon coming in this fall. Would like to see us add a lineman or two on offense and defense, a wide receiver, Kameron Uter is on campus this weekend and he may recommit after de-commiting a week and a half ago, and maybe add a quarterback or two. Shawn Stankavage,, a 6’3, 185 pound qb out of Raleigh, N.C. is very interested and could get an offer. Will keep you updated as soon as anyone else pops. A lot of good players on campus this weekend including all the commitments, and some uncommitted guys.

Bball with a huge win yesterday at Texas A&M, 66-55 James Siakam with a huge day recording his second double double this season with 22 points and 10 rebounds. James also added three assists and four blocks. Just an awesome overall performance from James. He was 10-of-13 from the line as well. Kyle added 19. He was three-of-five from three point land, and eight of eight from the stripe. Luke Kornet came in later in the first half and was huge for us. Luke was three-of-five from trifecta, and they were big shots. He’s got a great shot, so it is really good to see Luke get it going. Rod didn’t have his best game, but hit a huge three late. Dai_jon didn’t shoot it great yesterday, but Kevin liked his floor game. He had eight boards and five assists. We outrebounded the Aggies, 36-33, and 19-of-23 from the line (83%). Excellent day for the team. We moved to 10-8 overall and 2-4 in the SEC. We head to Athens to play Georgia on Wednesday at 7 PM ET/6 CT on CSS. If Luke can keep up his good work off the bench and Damian, who played decently yesterday, can keep improving and Shelby and walk-on Carter Josephs, who played well at point in relief of Kyle, can give us solid minutes, we can beat Georgia Wednesday and keep progressing as this season just improved immensely yesterday at College Station.
No.16 girls bball plays host to N0.10 South Carolina at Memorial at 2 PM ET/ 1 CT on ESPN2. Girls now 16-3, 5-1 in the SEC After three huge wins over UT, Ole Miss and LSU. UT and LSU were both in the top 10 at the time. Hopefully gals can get it done today. Will; let you know on that too.

Key holes on South Course:

All par fives: That’s where some scoring occurs: No.6 is a 560 yard par five in which you carry the canyon on right with a draw. The challenge of the second shot is getting a long approach to land softly on the green.No.9 is a 613 par five which the longest players can reach, but most of the players will have to hit three shots and lay up in good shape to hit a good approach for a birdie opportunity. No.13 is a 541 yard par five in which the drive will carry the canyon on the left. The second shot calls for a 260 yard carry as the green is protected by bunkers and rough in the front. No.18 is the classic on the course. A 572 yard, par five, this hole has created plenty of drama throughout the years. Eldrick’s 2008 U.S. Open victory was punctuated on that Saturday in June when he chipped in from the bunker on 17 for birdie and then eagled 18 from 30 feet with a bad knee that would require surgery right after the tournament. Eldrick was really playing up the injury too. Grimacing dramatically after a lot of shots. He wanted to let everybody know he was hurt. Retief Goosen said later he was “faking.” He wasn’t, but it was funny because Eldrick likes the drama.

North course is a scoring course. The players will make a lot of birdies on this course.

The Contenders:

Eldrick:

He’s won eight times here, so he’s got a pretty good grip on Torrey. Can he get it done again. It’s hard to tell because he hasn’t played that much– been busy with Lindsey– but he’s definitely a factor. If the driver is accurate and the putter is clicking, he could win No.9 at Torrey Pines.

Sneee-deker, “yeah that’s the guy”:

Brandt won here two years ago and he’s got a good shot this year. Was second last year behind Tiger. If the putter is on, Sneds could win this thing.

Jordan Spieth:

I’m seeing greatness out of this 20 year old. Won last year at the John Deere and has all the tools to be a major winner  this year. See him possibly getting it done this weekend.

Jimmy Walker:

Already won twice this season at the Frys.com Open in October (the season started then with the new format) and at the Sony Open two weeks ago. Very solid player with an excellent short game and pretty long and accurate. Has a shot for sure. Finished tied fourth here last year.

Jason Day:

Finished tied ninth here last year. He’s ready for a major this year. Been so close the last two years almost winning the Masters and U.S. last year. Primed for a big 2014.

The winner:

Philip Alfred Mickelson:

Phil finished tied for second with Rory at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship last week shooting 63-69 on Saturday and Sunday, losing by one shot to Spaniard Pablo Larrazabal. Phil just seems to keep getting better with age. I see him with a very good shot to capture the U.S. this year at Pinehurst 2 for his sixth major and a career slam. Phil gets it done with his length on Torrey and his putting which has really come on in the last two years. He’s always been a good putter, now he’s a great putter. Philip gets it done at Totrey.

Phil should be all smiles come Sunday on the South Course at Torrey

Couple of other notes:

Pick to win in the NBA Finals:

Oklahoma City over Indiana Pacers in 7

Final Four this year at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas (the house that Jerry built) April 5th and 7th:

Arizona, Florida, Kansas  and Louisville

NFL idea to change to taking out the extra point kick:

Don’t like it. Some traditions are sacred in football and I like the idea that if a team works hard and scores a touchdown they can have an automatic seven. Don’t like having to make them work some more after scoring a TD. Need to keep the kick in the game.

The college football playoff:

I’ll adjust, but it’s hard to imagine Florida State having to play another game after that war with Auburn in the national championship game. Injuries could be a factor in the final game after two brutal, hard fought semifinal games.

Bama Quarterback:

I like Jacob Coker. He can be a good quarterback for the Tide next year. His numbers as a senior starter at St. Paul’s in Mobile were impressive. He was 94-of-153 (61%) for 1,508 yards, 15 TDs and just two ints. He can do a good job as signal caller for the Tide. Blake Sims, Alec Morris, Cooper Bateman and David Cornwell will have a say in the competition.

AU quarterback:

Nick is the incumbent, but Jeremy Johnson is going to give him some major competition in the spring. Jeremy is 6’6″, 225 pounds and is a prototype qb. Jeremy can make all the throws and he’s a good decision-maker too. Will be interesting competition.

Early predictions:

Florida State, Auburn, Alabama and UCLA.

***Really like the hire of Bill Clark by UAB Athletics Director Brian Mackin. Well done there by BMac. Bill is an excellent football coach, who will recruit well, and bring some tough defense to the Southside. Bill has an excellent resume as he just took Jax State in his first year to the quarterfinals of the FCS playoffs, and was a very good defensive coordinator at South Alabama for Joey Jones. He was also highly successful at Prattville High School where he won a couple of Class 6A state championships and went 107-11 under him. Clark’s 2007 squad was ranked second nationally at the end of the season. He won his last 30 games at Prattville. Excellent hire by Brian Mackin.

Karl Dorrell….

Karl will guide the offense
New offensive  coordinator. Like what I’ve read about Karl. Picture of him. Looks like a good man. Should be a good recruiter. We’ll see how our offensive develops in the spring with our two young quarterbacks, Patton Robinette and Johnny McCrary, and see how we run the ball with Jerron and others and our wide receiving corps of young, talented guys. Look for Jordan Cunningham, Latevius Rayford, DeAndre Woods and Gerald Perry to make a big impact outside next year. Spring game will help get a read on the offense. Line looks good for next year as we lost only one senior on the line though he was a good one, Wesley Johnson, who I’m pretty sure we’ll be seeing on Sundays. I’m really pumped for our defense. With Derek and dc David Kotulski and the talent we have coming back, I like how we’re going to be on defense next year. Lost our entire starting secondary, Ladler and Hal will play on Sundays, but I love the guys we have filling in. Our whole starting secondary got knocked out in the second half against Tennessee and the young guys like Torren McGaster, Darrius Sims and Paris Head played excellent football to hold down the Vols and allow us to win that game. Linebackers should be awesome and line should be very physical. We’ve got the pieces in place if we get our qb and the rest of our offense going to have a good football team. Recruiting weekend critical this weekend. Keep our present commits and add some more is the goal. Will have more on it over the weekend.

Richard Sherman, a few other things

USA Today columnist Will Leitch says that Richard Sherman is "a hero" for his comments after Seahawks-49ers game. Can't say I agree with that

There have been some people, Erin Andrews of Fox Sports and USA Today sports columnist Will Leitch, calling what Seattle Seahawks’ cornerback Richard Sherman’s comments after the game against the 49ers on Sunday, “awesome” in Andrews’ words, and “heroic” in Leitch’s words. For some reason I didn’t see that.

To me it was pretty violent, out of control behavior and was not “heroic.”. Sherman is a very good  cornerback, maybe the best in the NFL, though Kennan Lewis of the Saints, Aqib Talib of the Patriots and usually Darrelle Revis of the Tampa Bay Bucs have a pretty good argument with Sherman. So I’m not going to go that far. But he’s outstanding. He’s a Stanford grad, which is impressive, and he’s articulate many times.

But his tirade on Sunday against Michael Crabtree after the game on national television was totally out of line. I know football players are violent on the field. Everybody except the quarterback, who has to do a lot more thinking than the other 21 players out there, are out there to knock the other guy’s block off. I get that and I understand that’s the nature of the game. But to say that Sherman’s interview after the game was “awesome” (in Andrews’ words) is way off base. It might work for reality TV, which I guess is what Andrews is looking for in her postgame interviews, but I’d rather have a calm, focused, intelligent interview with some humor in there too. That wasn’t fun to watch. Andrews even seemed a little scared to me. He seemed borderline dangerous, and mentally unbalanced. To shed some light on his reaction, Crabtree had allegedly tried to fight Sherman at a party last August in Arizona. But after Sherman made an incredible play deflecting Colin Kaepernick’s attempted go-ahead touchdown pass away and his teammate intercepting it in the end zone to clinch the Seattle victory, he should have just celebrated with the crowd and his teammates and left it at that. Instead, he taunted Crabtree and then had his what I would call a verbal explosion after the game. For Leitch to call it heroic is clueless. He acted like an animal. That’s fine on the football field and with your teammates in the lockerroom, but not cool when talking to the national media. Leitch wrote that Sherman is smarter than us (America). I guess because he graduated with a degree in Mass Communications from Stanford we’re supposed to assume he’s on the same intelligence level as Seattle’s owner, Paul Allen, the founder of Microsoft. For some reason, i don’t think Sherman is smarter than most people. He may be smart enough to get by and certainly to play football, but I don’t think those comments were intelligent. I thought they leaned more on the side of abusive and unintelligent.

Sherman has a major chip on his shoulder and he lashes out against anyone who may question him as a player. Skip Bayless interviewed him– with Bayless in the ESPN studio in Bristol, Connecticut and Sherman in Seattle– on ESPN’s First Take. Sherman had obviously taken exception to what Bayless had said about him on the air in earlier broadcasts. I think Bayless said he wasn’t the best corner in the NFL in another show. Sherman, in the interview, said “I’m better than you, you’re nothing.” Skip is a pretty accomplished sports writer and broadcast journalist, so to attack him like that is pretty baseless and ignorant. And it was not funny. It was abusive. Not good TV as Erin Andrews likes in what she now wants in her “reality” segments after the game or any time.

So I’m not into Richard Sherman’s act. It’s bad for football. He needs to calm down and some members of the media need to quit gushing like Old Faithful about him. There’s nothing interesting or classy about what he said Sunday. It was barbaric really. He needs to calm down his act and focus on the Super Bowl and quit mouthing off. He’ll have plenty to worry about on Sunday, February, 2nd, against Peyton Manning and the Broncos wide receivers. So he needs to quit this self-aggrandizing, clown show he’s got going and get back to concentrating on football.

By the way, the better team didn’t win on Sunday in Seattle. I call the Seahawks a gimmick team. Russell Wilson is a gimmick quarterback. He has a lot of athletic ability, but he’s not a passer at all. He gets it done, but it just doesn’t look like real football to me. His go-ahead touchdown pass was on an offsides play on the 49ers, who let down their guard once the flags were thrown, allowing Wilson to throw for seven. Otherwise, he didn’t do anything except run a little bit. It’s just not an interesting football team to watch. The Niners play the game the right way. To me, they’re the Alabama of the pros. They play good football. Seattle I guess gets it done, but I don’t like the way they play. There’s no fluidity to their offense. They just do it on the fly with what looks like no coordination or planning. It’s just not real football on offense. Their defense is good, but I want t o see them defend Peyton before I start saying they’re really good.

Gene Steratore, the head ref for the Seahawks-49ers game, made a blatant error when he didn’t call a roughing the kicker penalty on Seattle in the second quarter. By rule, when a defensive player runs into the punter’s plant leg, which the Seattle guy did, it’s roughing the punter and a 15 yard penalty and an automatic first down. Steratore called it running into the kicker, which is a five yard penalty, and the yards didn’t give the Niners a first down. Was kind of a critical call in the game. If the 49ers get that first down there is no guarantee they’re going to score, the ball would have been on their own 40 something yard line, but it could have made the difference at that time in the game in which the Niners were leading. It was reported that Steratore had worked three college basketball games that week. My objection to that is, man you’ve got your first priority on Sunday why are you wearing yourself out with all of that travel and calling three basketball games that week? Not very good planning and he missed an important call in the game that cost the 49ers. May have cost them the game. Bad mistake. He’s made quite a few this year.

Finally, Bill Belichick called Wes Welker’s collision with Patriots’ cornerback Aqib Talib a purposeful act and said to the media that the league ought to take action against Welker. I watched the play three or four times yesterday and I didn’t see Welker trying to hurt Talib. It was offensive pass interference on the “pick” play by Welker, but Welker wasn’t intentionally trying to hurt Talib, who left the game with an injury and never got back in. It did have a bearing on the outcome of the game as Talib is a terrific cover corner and Demaryius Thomas had his way catching passes from Manning the rest of the game; but looking at the contact, Welker hit the ground a lot harder than Talib. You would have thought Welker was hurt a lot worse than Talib. The refs missed an offensive pass interference call, but there was no intent on Welker’s part to hurt Talib. There’s a history between Belichick and Welker, who played for the Patriots for several years before signing with the Broncos last offseason, and it looks more like sour grapes on Belichick’s part.

Assistant coaches on Mason’s staff (per Vandysports) with comments on them

New defensive coordinator David Kotulski brings a lot of toughness to VU from Stanford
Known Position/Coordinator assistants Confirmed

Gerry Gdowski- from Ohio U. [Position TBA]-My comment: Quarterbacks coach and OC at Ohio U. Not known if he’ll be the OC, but think Mason will go with someone else for OC
Keven Lightner- from Ohio U. [OLine coach]-My comment: groomed a lot of good players according to his bio
David Kotulski- from Stanford [Defensive Coordinator]-comment: Excellent coach here. Was linebackers coach at Stanford and the Stanford linebackers were arguably the best in the nation in 2013. Certainly a top 5 unit. One of his linebackers said, “Coach tells us to hit anything that moves.” He’s aggressive, smart and tough. Like the toughness he’ll bring to a young but talented linebacking corps at VU. Look for redshirt frosh Nigel Bowden, Oren Burks and Zach Cunningham to be big time players in the next couple of years. Guys like Darreon Herring (awesome player) and Jake Sealand and Ja’karri Thomas to excel under Kotulski.
Vavae Tata-   from Stanford  [DL coach];comment: some more Stanford toughness. Stanford d line was ultra aggressive and physical. They put two Washington State quarterbacks out this year in consecutive plays. Don’t like to see guys get hurt, but these guys were physical.

Blue collar greatness

The journey to greatness starts right now with new coach Derek Mason and our fins football team
Derek Mason was trained under Jim Harbaugh to wear gas station attendant shirts when he got to Stanford to take on the blue collar mentality. He said he thought it was a little weird but it worked. Derek Mason is going to bring blue-collar work ethic, which our guys are totally up for, he knows the game well and will teach his team to “beat the brakes” off the opponent.

Derek wants world class in football and academics. He’s talking SEC East titles. That leads us to the SEC championship game, and then the next step when we win that.  He loves his players who are in place. They want to win big, that’s Kyle Woestmann’s, Caleb Azubike’s and Patton Robinette’s goal . We’ve got a lot of talent on this football team. James said after the bowl game that our 2014 team would be better than 2013. We’re pretty loaded. There will be some interesting personnel decisions in the spring. Right now, Derek has 90% of his staff selected. Will have that once names are in place. He will talk extensively with the loyal Coaches Herb Hand and Charles Bankins from James’ staff, who have stayed on, recruited extensively and stayed loyal to our kids on the team. Then it’s time to recruit like there’s no tomorrow starting ASAP. We’ve got to get guys like four-star quarterback KJ Carta-Samuels and four-star running back Mikale Wilbon back on board at Vanderbilt University. They de-committed and we want them back.
Derek has a lot to do. From a personal standpoint, he’s a really fine man and knows the game of football. He wants to run the ball of course, have explosive plays, score all of the time in the red zone and have a run-pass balance in the offense which all coaches aspire to.
Assistant coaches in place and recruiting are priority one right now, and then get ready for the spring with our present players, who are the backbone of this program right now. Spring game will give us some good intel on what to expect next year. Now it’s time to solidify our new staff and recruit like there’s no tomorrow to land the stellar class we are looking for.
Like what I’m hearing. Want to see what we can get done in these next two and a half weeks, but I like Derek’s character. Good Vanderbilt man.
Basketball tonight at LSU @9 PM ET/8 CT on ESPNU. Would be a nice win in Baton Rouge if we can get it tonight. Our starting five of Rod, Kyle, Dai-Jon, James and Damian are starting to look pretty special to me. If Shelby and Luke can give us some quality minutes, the we can achieve some good things this year. Not guaranteeing a tourney bid, but it’s certainly a possibility with our group. Tonight is important.

Corbs looks at 2014 prospects

Corbs getting set to go in '14

The big fella, Xavier Turner, will give us a great glove at the hot corner and a lot of pop at the plate

Tim Corbin has set a standard for excellence in Vanderbilt University baseball that is unparalleled in VU baseball history and has made this program the standard bearer for the SEC and a premier program nationally in college baseball. Three SEC regular season titles (2007, 2011, 2013), an SEC tournament title in 2007,  three Super Regional appearances (2010, 2011 and 2013),  a college world series appearance in 2011, and a massive amount of players in professional baseball, led by the stellar southpaw David Price of the Tampa Bay Rays. David won the AL Cy Young Award in 2012 as the best pitcher in the American League and just signed a one-year deal with the Rays two days ago to stay with them this season. David could be an all time great. Pedro Alvarez (Pirates), Mike Minor (Braves) and Sonny Gray (Oakland A’s) are emerging superstars in the game. Ryan Flaherty of the Baltimore Orioles has a good chance to be the starting second baseman this year for the O’s. Tony Kemp, Aaron Westlake and Curt Casali among many other former Dore players are matriculating through the minors to make it to the big leagues Our recruiting classes in 2011 and 2012 along with 2005 were number one in the country according to Baseball America. Our class this year which is not signed, sealed and delivered yet is ranked second in the country by Perfect Game USA.

The goal at Vanderbilt every year is to be playing deep into June, preferably in Omaha. That’s the standard Corbs has set. Last year the team went 54-12 and set a record for wins in the SEC going 26-3. This year’s team looks promising with some good bats, good gloves and excellent arms. Our team opens up with a series against Long Beach State out in Long Beach, Caly, February 14th-16th. Long Beach was not an NCAA tourney team last year, but traditionally have been talented and made several tournaments,

Corbs and I talked about this year’s squad and the prospects for the season. Here are his thoughts in our Q&A:

DW: Who are your key infielders this year and what are each guys’ strengths?

TC: “The left side of our infield should stay intact.(Xavier) Turner ((sophomore) and (Vince) Conde (junior)should play 3B and shortstop respectively. They both move very well and have enough athleticism and arm strength to give us good coverage on that side of the field. Dansy Swanson (sophomore) will also play somewhere: he could be our shortstop right now. But Vinnie has played that position very well. Dansby will play second base, he is a very good all around player and will be extremely rangy at second. Zander Wiel (redshirt soph) is a front runner at 1st base. He is continually improving. He is a good athlete for his size (6’3″, 215) and shows good glove skills.”

DW: What about your outfielders?

TC: “Our outfield may be the biggest question mark right now. Obviously, when you lose three seniors in one spot it impacts a position (Yaz, Connor Harrell and Jack Lupo off last year’s team). We have very good parts, we just don’t know what parts will be installed. Rhett Wiseman will play somewhere. Johnny Norwood could as well… it is his time to man a starting position. He is plenty athletic. It will be more about consistency with him. Ro Coleman (freshman), Bryan Reynolds (frosh), Nolan Rogers (frosh) and Kyle Smith (soph) could all be impactful. They all possess different styles of play, but they all have bright futures. Good, good baseball players.”

Comment: Really like Wiseman and Smith’s bats. Smith hits for power. Wiseman could too. If Norwood shows consistency at the plate he could be an excellent center fielder for us. He’s got great wheels too for base stealing purposes. We’ll see how the young guys develop

DW:Have you decided on your Friday Night starter and weekend rotation yet? And, if so, who are those guys and what are their strengths?

TC: “No, this is open right now… (Tyler) Beede, Jared Miller, (T.J.) Pecoraro (Carson) Fulmer, (Walker) Buehler and (Tyler) Ferguson would all be considered at this point. We are training 6-7 guys for that role right now. We have been fortunate in the last couple of years to have some consistency with our starting pitching and we hope to have that again. But it’s too soon to label any of those kids in that role.”

Comment: Translation: We have some absolute stud arms and the good problem is all of them are so good, it’s tough to figure out Friday Night and the weekend. Man, is there some talent on this staff…

DW: How does your bullpen look for middle relief and your closer or closers? I imagine (Brian) Miller is still a key cog on the team on the back end…

TC: Our bullpen will have a nice mix of arm variations and rhythm changes. Obviously, pitchers who will not fill a starting role will move to the bullpen role. Like the starting situation, it’s too early to put kids in specific bullpen roles. Brian Miller, Steven Rice and Hayden Stone are very good candidates to be in those positions. We are continuing the development of Jordan Sheffield (one of the top recruits in this class nationally). If he continues to strengthen his arm and stamina, he could find himself in this position as well. Keenan Kolinsky, Ryan Johnson, Ben Bowden and John Kilichowski are left handed pitchers who could figure into this spot as well.

Comment: As you can see there is a lot of depth in the pitching staff this season. Ton of depth and talent.

DW: What do you think it’ll take for this team to win another SEC title and make a deep run in the postseason?

TC: “This group just needs continual game growth and maturity. We have a nice mix of talent on the mound and some developing talent positionally. But our mental growth of learning how to compete and personal development will be the emphasis for our group as we move forward. There will be 5-6 people on the field that have never been in this position before, so it will be a growth transition for many of those kids. New roles and dealing with the day-to-day mental stamina of playing. We just want to be better in May than we are right now.”

Comment: My translation: We’ve got a dang good group of ball players. Just need to develop and peak in May and June. We always do.

DW: Do you feel good about (pitching coach) Scott Brown having a year under his belt and his ability to handle the pitching staff this season?

Note: Scott got the job right before the season started last year and came in kind of hamstrung as our stellar pitching coach, Derek Johnson, took a big pitching job with the Chicago Cubs, I believe it was director of minor league pitching. Brown is in his second year at VU after coaching the pitching staff at St. John’s for nine seasons and had 15 players sign pro contracts in his tenure.

TC: “Brownie had to make a very difficult transition in many ways (last year). Personally, he had to move 3 young kids and a wife across the country as the season began. That is a hurdle in itself. Then he had to jump right into competition. That never happens in college baseball. If there is a coaching transition, it takes place during the summer. He never had that luxury. He is far and away in a better spot this year. He has had a spring of game growth and a year of having each pitched underneath him. His comfort level is in a completely different position than it was last year. The pitching will certainly benefit from this. He is a good one.”

DW: How does the hitting/base running look on this team? Do we have an explosive player or players on the base paths? This is my own thought,  but I’m pretty excited about John Norwood.

TC: “We have good team speed. (Dansby) Swanson,  (Ro) Coleman, (Xavier) Turner, (Rhett) Wiseman, and (Zander) Wiel love to run the bases. Swanson is the type of kid who could take a lot of free bases, similar to what Xavier did last year. Very good base running instincts. We spend a lot of time on the base running component. All of our kids are very adept at taking bases and understanding the accomplishment of free bases.”

Comment: Corbs may have accidentally left out Norwood. But he’s a blazer too.

DW: What about the fielding of this group?

TC:  “I like the potential of our defensive group. I really believe that we can have a very good infield. Swanson would have played a lot last year had he not gotten hurt. He really gives us added athleticism up the middle. Our catching situation will get better as the year progresses. Chris Harvey improves every time he steps on the field. Jason Delay and Karl Ellison (both catchers) are two promising freshmen who will have opportunities this year. The outfield has options; we just haven’t defined them yet.”

DW:My sense is we have more power/run producing ability in this group than we did last year, though I liked last year’s group a lot. Guys like Zander (Wiel) , Kyle (Smith), and Chris (Harvey) all look like good power guys. Xavier is as strong as a Sherman Tank. Do you see those guys producing a lot of runs, hitting it out?

TC: “We do have some strength in our lineup, but not sure how to translate it yet. (Xavier) Turner is certainly stronger than last year and very healthy. Swanson is a mix of strength and speed. Wiel has really improved as a hitter in the last two years. He understands the strike zone and is a tough out. Harvey and Smith have that ability as well; they just need to be more consistent (at the plate). The group has a nice blend of size, strength and speed. The goal is for those skill sets to be more usable.”

DW:How does the schedule look and which series are some key early season matchups?

TC: “The schedule is tough and demanding. We begin on the road against a Long Beach State team that brings back most of its players. This will be a strong challenge for us immediatly. Illinois-Chicago, Stanford and Winthrop are our other out of conference opponents. Stanford is very recognizable, but the other two are future (NCAA) regional squads and pose many issues for us. Then we start the SEC season with (powerhouses) LSU (at home, March 14-16) and Mississippi State (on the road, March 21-23)… enough said.”

DW: What are your thoughts on the SEC and who are the teams that will be factors this season?

TC: “The SEC will never change. It’s the AL East of college baseball. Every team purchases free agents in the off-season and improves their stadium by a million dollars. You add Texas A&M and Missouri to a group of 12 and you start asking yourself, ‘ Where are the gins going to come from?’ I refuse to look at the whole thing at the beginning of the year.. you can’t. It’s very overwhelming.”

DW: Finally, Corbs, what are your thoughts on James’ departure?

TC: “Having our fan base upset with James is a very normal thing and a very healthy thing. It means that he was very instrumental in adjusting a culture and drawing in the emotions of Vanderbilt people. He made a decision based on his upbringing, his family and his background. I’m sure the emotional “tug” was a key component when it came down to finalizing what he wanted to do. He didn’t purposefully try to hurt the players, fans or administration when choosing to leave for Penn State. When a coach builds a strong culture, the culture has a chance to survive the loss of leadership because a strong foundation has been set. This is the case here. The emotions of his loss will quickly turn to the emotions of the next person that takes his place (it is being reported it’s Derek Mason, about 95% sure of that). This caring attitude needs to be placed towards the kids. They are the only reasons that I, James. Kevin and Melanie have a job.”

Final comment:

We’ll get it done in baseball. Omaha is within reach with continued development of this baseball team. We have speed, power, defense, run producing and a ton of pitching. All the ingredients for a big year, though the SEC is brutal and will be a major challenge as it always is. Like our group and its potential a lot though.

Stellar weekend in the NFL; stellar Sunday ahead

Kaepernick looks to go back to the Super Bowl

It just keeps getting better; I wish it would never end

The games weren’t as close as anticipated, but the stars shined and the four teams in the respective conference championships are the best four teams, though the Saints had a really quality club, but played in the driving rain in Seattle with 30 MPH winds and had a shot. They’re up there with the other four.

NFC Divisional

Saturday:

Seahawks 23, Saints 15

It didn’t seem like the Seahawks dominated this game by any means, but the Beast, Marshawn Lynch, was a dominant running back. Lynch had the clinching 31 yard TD run and finished with 140 yards on 28 carries and two TDs. Russell Wilson was nine-of-18 for 103 yards, no TDs and no ints. He had a 67.6 passer rating. The Saints scored with :26 seconds left to cut the lead to eight and recovered the onside kick, but Breesy threw a pass to Marques Colston, who caught it at the Seattle 38 and was about to go out of bounds with about four seconds left, but Colston tried to throw the ball across the field to fellow wide out Travaris Cadet, but that didn’t work and the game was over. Pretty tough conditions to play football with heavy rain and a 30 MPH wind, but it was a very good game. Seahawks move on to host the winner of Sunday’s game.

Who were on Sunday…

49ers 23, Panthers 10

Niners qb Colin Kaepernick and the Niners defense, with two interceptions of Cam, move on to Seattle next Sunday. Kaepernick was 15-of-28 for 196 yards and a touchdown, a one yard pass to Vernon Davis. His passer rating was 87.8, which is solid, but not overwhelming. But he played very well and executed the key passes when his team needed him to. And the defense was all over Cam with five sacks on the day and two ints. Linebacker Ahmad Brooks had two and a half sacks. This is the best linebacking corps in the NFL with NaVarro Bowman, who recorded 11 tackles, a sack and a tackle for loss, and Patrick Willis, who also finished for the team co-lead with Bowman recording 11 tackles. This team is tough, physical and has the playmakers in Kaepernick, who is also a huge threat with his wheels, running back Frank Gore, who had 84 yards on 17 carries, Anquan Bolin (8 receptions for 136 yards), Michael Crabtree and Vernon Davis. Donte Whitner and Willis had the interceptions for the Niners. Cam and the Panthers need to regroup for next year. It’s painful to lose in the playoffs, but this is a young talented team with an excellent defense so they’ll be back. Meanwhile the Niners continue their quest for the Super Bowl at MetLife Stadium at the Meadowlands in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

AFC Divisional

Saturday

Patriots 43, Colts 22

The Patriots blasted the Colts and did it with a stellar run game and stout defense. LeGarrette Blount ran for 166 yards on 24 carries and scored four TDs. Blount is in his fifth season out of Oregon and has had his share of difficulties both in the college and pros with some poor personal decisions, but he hit his stride on Saturday Night. Tom Brady was 13-of-25 for 198 yards with no TDs and no ints and a 78.4 passer rating. Those are pedestrian numbers for Tom Terrific, but he didn’t need to be great as Blount and Stevan Ridley were awesome. Ridley ran for 52 yards and 14 carries and scored two TDs. But the New England defense was also the story. They intercepted Andrew Luck four times. Luck had a pretty bad night going 20 of 41 for 331 yards with two TDs but the four ints. His passer rating was 53. Pretty bad number there. Conerback Alfonzo Dennard picked Luck off twice and former Alabama linebacker Dont’a Hightower intercepted a dropped pass as well. Hightower also led the team in tackles with eight. If Belichick and Brady have this kind of running game to go along with solid defense, they’re dangerous. They’ll play next Sunday at:

Denver

Broncos 24, Chargers 17

Peyton and the Broncos move one step closer to the Super Bowl. Peyton was 25-of-36 for 230 yards, two TDs and one int. His passer rating was 93.5, good number. Peyton’s TD passes went to Demaryius Thomas and Wes Welker. The rejuvenated Knowshon Moreno ran for 82 yards on 23 carries. Moreno was featured in SI last week. Man he had a tough upbringing but has found himself in his fifth year in the league out of Georgia. Phillip Rivers had a nice game for the Chargers going 18-of-27 for 217 yards and two TDs with no ints for a passer rating of 115.8, highest of any qb over the weekend. The Chargers look like they could be a team to be reckoned with next year. Rivers has gained a lot of confidence under new coach Mike McCoy, who was Peyton’s coordinator in Denver last year, and they run it and play good defense. But the Broncos move on to host the Patriots this season for the right to go to New Jersey and play for it all in Super Bowl 48 on Sunday, February 2nd on Fox with kickoff scheduled for 6:25 PM ET/5:25 CT.

Predictions for this Sunday:

New England (12-4) @ Denver (13-3)

3 PM ET/2 CT

Sports Authority Field at Mile High (76,125)

CBS

Jim, Phil and Wolf

Weather: As of today, 56 degrees partly cloudy, 0 % rain, wind 9 MPH

Line:Denver by 5

Peyton versus Brady for the 15th time. Brady leads in head to head 10-4. Can Peyton get over the hump this time. Skip Bayless of ESPN calls Peyton the greatest regular season quarterback ever, and I agree. A lot to be said for that over the course of Peyton’s 16 year career. But getting to the Super Bowl has been challenging for him. Three all time great coaches, Don Shula, Joe Gibbs and Bill Parcells were polled on who he would take as his quarterback Brady or Peyton. Shula, who won two Super Bowls as the coach of the Miami Dolphins (1972 and 73)  chose Peyton. Gibbs, who won three Super Bowls as coach of the Washington Redskins (1982, ’87 and 91), chose Peyton. Parcells, who won two Super Bowls as coach of the New York Giants (1986, 1990), picked Brady. It’s a tough call, but with three Super Bowl victories and five Super Bowl appearances, I’d have to pick Brady also if somebody gave me an ultimatum to pick. Peyton is 37 and Brady is 36. Peyton could retire after this season once he gets his neck checked out and if he sees there are complications he might hang up his jersey from an illustrious career. Brady and Peyton are two of the three all time greats along with Montana. If I had to pick today, I’d go 1. Brady, 2. Montana, 3. Peyton. I like Brady to get the better of Peyton this Sunday as well. I think the Patriots have a better team than the Broncos.

Patriots 31, Broncos 28

San Francisco (12-4) @ Seattle (13-3)

CenturyLink Field (67,000)

6:30 PM ET/5:30 CT

Fox

Joe, Troy, Pam

Weather: as of today, Cloudy, 49 degrees, 20% rain, wind 6 MPH. Pretty good for Seattle as of right now.

Line: Seahawks by 3.5

I really like the way Colin Kaepernick is playing right now. Seems really on top of things and just a playmaker. The Niners defense really impresses me. They are not only tough, physical and disruptive in the front seven, but there are game changers in this group. Like Seattle’s defense and Lynch is a total stud, and Wilson is good too, but I like the Niners to get it done here and move on to the Meadowlands where they’ll face Brady and the Patriots. Had the Niners over the Patriots in Super Bowl 48 in my preseason pick. I hedged a little bit during the season, but that was my preseason pick.

Niners 27, Seahawks 24

Record over the weekend: 3-1

Overall record, NFL : 60-34 (64%)

Final college record: 145-58 (71%)

Bowls: 20-15
