Championship game, Martin Laird, Rory, at Valero, Masters week

Will Pitino be cutting down the nets?

Or will John Beilein?

The stage is set for a classic. 9:23 PM ET/8:23 CT tipoff for Louisville-Michigan on CBS.Jim Nantz, Clark Kellogg and Steve Kerr calling the game and Wolf doing sideline reporting.

Wow, I’m looking at a war here. Louisville took a hit at the guard position when sophomore Kevin Ware went down with injury in the Elite Eight game versus Duke and they were taken to the brink by a very good Wichita State team on Saturday. In fairness to the Cardinals, the refs were calling it way  too tight against Louisville and the Cards could never get into a rhythm offensively until the last eight minutes when the refs let up on the whistles when ‘Ville was on defense. Walk-on Tim Henderson hit a couple of huge threes to get the team back in the game. And junior small forward Luke Hancock took over offensively in the last 10 minutes, and really throughout the game, as the Cards survived the Shockers, 72-68.

Michigan had a tight one themselves with the ‘Cuse, winning 61-56. Mitch McGary, the Wolverines 6″10″, 250 forward-center, is a load and he is one heckuva passer and player in general. He’s been the No.1 guy in this tournament in making his team better. He’s an exceptional passer and has a nice shot and can he ever bang in the middle. Rugged, tough player. He’s going to give Louisville eraser Gorgui Dieng (6’11”, 245) everything he wants tonight. Louisville guards Russ Smith (18.9 ppg, 83 steals) and Peyton Siva (9.8 ppg, 5.7 assists and 86 steals) are going to have to play a ton of minutes tonight and they will be tested severely by the awesome Michigan point guard Trey Burke (18.5 ppg and 6.7 assists). Tim Hardaway Jr. (14.5 ppg) and Nik Stausjas (11.2 ppg, 44 percent from 3) will be challenging for the Louisville guards and defense as well. McGary is averaging 7.5 ppg and 6.3 rbg, but he has turned it on in this tournament and has been dominant. He’s playing like a fifth year senior. Dieng is averaging 9.8 ppg and 9.4 rbg. Should be a war in there between those two. Glen Robinson III (10.9 ppg) is another scorer for the Wolverines.

The teams only common opponent is Syracuse and Louisville split games with them losing at home but beating them later in the season at ‘Cuse. Michigan beat ‘Cuse by five Saturday.

With all that said, in Pitino and the defense I trust. The ‘Ville only gave up 58 points per game to opponents this year. Michigan was not too bad either at 63 ppg. Michigan averages 75 points per game, while ‘Ville is at 74. I think there’ll be more scoring in this game than usual. Louisville will have to be pretty good on offense to beat this team and they’ll have to be stellar on defense. The Louisville defense does enough and the Cards make enough shots to capture their third national title in school history. I’ll keep the score the same as I’ve had it.

Louisville 80, Michigan 72

What a performance by Martin Laird in the Valero Texas Open yesterday. Shot 63 and came back from five strokes down on Sunday to capture his third title on the PGA Tour. He won the Arnie two years ago and won the Justin Timberlake tourney in 2009. He had 23 putts yesterday, just incredible. Birdied 16,17 and 18 to hold off the hard charging Rory McIlroy, who shot a 66 himself. Laird beat Rory by two shots.

That was a really good sign for Rory though heading into Augusta this week. It was such a good move for him to play this past weekend and get that tourney experience and do so well heading into the Masters  this week. Rory will be in the hunt. Man was he hitting the ball well yesterday. He has two majors under his belt. He’ll be right there in the mix. I’m not conceding this thing to Tiger. He hasn’t won at Augusta since 2005. He’s been very good this year, but every course he’s won on he’s owned. He’s won at Torrey  eight times (where he won the Farmers in February), he’s won at Doral seven times (where he won in early March at the WGC-Cadillac) and he’s won at Bay Hill nine times (where he won the Arnie three weeks ago). So this is not a slam dunk at all. I don’t think he’s as unflappable as he used to be and the competition is not shying away. He doesn’t play a lot, and he hasn’t competed in three weeks, so that could be a factor. Like Rory, Kuchar, Dustin Johnson, Phil, maybe Poulter, even Ernie, Brandt and others to challenge. This will be an epic Masters. This year may be as good as ever. The weather doesn’t look great Thursday and Friday, so we’ll see what transpires there. There is a chance of severe weather on Thursday, and Friday, last I checked, there was a 70 percent chance for t storms. Will have full preview on Wednesday afternoon. Write up on championship game tomorrow. Also spring football games have commenced. Georgia and Florida write ups this week.

Note: Louisville played Syracuse a third time in the Big East tourney final and won 78-61.

Baseball pulls out the brooms; football looking more and more primed for Aug. 29th

Connor gets it done in the clutch at the plate and on the bases
Won in 11 innings yesterday, 7-6, in an interesting, edge-of-your-seat game over Ole Miss to complete a sweep of the Black Bears and move to 29-4 on the season and 11-1 in the conference. We lead second place South Carolina by three games in the East. South Carolina is 7-4.  Kentucky is third at 6-5. South Carolina is a very good baseball team having just swept Tennessee. They closed the Vols out with a 19-2 victory yesterday. I’m thinking Florida is going to be a lot like us last year and be a very dangerous team at the of the season, come tourney time. LSU is fantastic. They are 30-2 and 11-1 in the West. The Bayou Bengal Tigers just swept Kentucky. More on LSU and SC in a minute.

We led 6-4 in the ninth yesterday, but the usually highly reliable Brian Miller allowed two runs in the bottom of the ninth which sent the game into extras. Brian has been so good this year, that every once in a while he may not have his best stuff; and Ole Miss is a quality team. But Brian hung in there with a man on third, got them out and kept us tied, and sent it into the 10th. Connor Harrell doubled in the top of the 11th, and with Yaz up at the plate, a pitch got away from the Ole Miss catcher and Connor hustled for third. The catcher retrieved the ball quickly and threw it to third. The throw got away from the third baseman and Connor jumped up from his slid and got home to put us up 7-6. That’s the run we needed as Brian shut the door in the bottom of the inning to move his record to 5-0 on the season. Connor had three hits and scored two runs. Yaz had three hits and scored twice. Vince Conde was three for five with three key runs batted in. Vinnie was clutch. Spence Navin had a huge day at the plate and on defense. Spence was four-for-four with two runs driven in and played some excellent defense like he always does. We had 17 hits for the game. We left 12 guys on base, so we need to get  better in that area. But we also had some clutch hits as well. Ole Miss left 14 men on base. We used six pitchers starting with Phillip Pfeifer who pitched OK. Pfeif has good stuff, he just needs to get the ball over the plate a little better. In Pfeifs’ defense there was some close ball?strike calls that didn’t go his way. Got some good work from the bullpen.

Won 2-1 Saturday Night as Tyler Beede moved to 8-0 on the season. Tyler still trying to work on his control too–he issued six walks on the night and struck out five. But Tyler’s got major league stuff, and he’ll keep improving in the control area as the season keeps progressing. Can’t argue with his results. Brian earned his 10th save Saturday Night and Connor had a key RBI single in the game. We left 11 on base Saturday Night, so I’m sure that’ll be a point of emphasis for Corbs this week. We play UT-Martin tomorrow night at 6:30 PM CT, and Missouri comes to town this weekend with games Friday at 6:30 PM CT, Saturday @ 4 PM CT (on ESPNU) and Sunday at 1 PM CT. Just need to get a little better hitting with men on base and have our pitchers’ get their control down some more.

LSU, as usual, has some lumber. Shortstop Alex Bregman is hitting .441 with three homers, 31 RBIs, 10 doubles and five triples. He’s nine-for-nine in stolen bases. First baseman Mason Katz is hitting .436 with 13 homers and 55 RBIs. That’s incredible. Left fielder Raph Ryhmes is hitting .350 and third baseman Christian Ibarra is hitting .343. They are hitting .317 as a team. We are hitting .296, so we’re close. Their leading pitcher is Ryan Eades, who is 7-0 with a 1.30 ERA. He has walked 13 and struck out 51 in 55.1 innings. Aaron Nola is 5-0 with a 2.55 ERA and has 62 K’s in 53 innings. Cody Glenn is 5-1 with a 3.12 ERA. Chris Cotton is their closer. He has eight saves and a 1.35 ERA. Their team ERA is 2.44. Ours is 2.42. They’ve made only 21 errors on the season in 32 games. Bregman has seven though. We’ve made 31 in 33 games.

They’re a heckuva team as is South Carolina, which is led in hitting by first baseman LB Dantzler, who seems like he’s been there forever. Dantzler is hitting .336 with 10 homers and 34 RBIs. They’re hitting .282 as a team. Their pitching is good. They have a team ERA of 2.87. Nolan Belcher is 5-2 with a 1.70 ERA and has 53 K’s in 58.1 innings. Their closer, Tyler Webb, has 11 saves and an 0.75 ERA. They have committed 30 errors in 33 games.

Florida’s good, Ole Miss is good, State is good, Arkansas is very good–they were preseason No.1 in the country in a couple of polls–and Alabama is 8-4 in confernce. This conference is outstanding in baseball. Always has been. I’d put the competition in baseball in this conference as just as intense as football is. We’ve got an excellent team though. I like our chances to do well the rest of the season and in the postseason. But we need to keep that approach of improving every day and not worry about the end result. Just get better every practice, every game. Corbs is good at keeping the team focused on the immediate task at hand. Our baseball program couldn’t be in better shape. Just an exciting group to watch.

Football spring game is at 1 PM CT and will be broadcast tape delayed on CSS and ESPN3 at 8 PM ET/ 7 CT. Very excited to see the guys play a simulated game. Just need to stay healthy and keep getting better as we close out spring and head into spring and summer workouts. The team’s attitude is fantastic. James’ personality permeates throughout the players. We are highly motivated to be even more special this year. The attitude is: we know we will win every game. We just don’t think it. We believe it. Defense had a really good scrimmage on Saturday. Steven Clarke had a pick six for a score as did Paris Head, a redshirt freshman safety, but Austyn Carta-Samuels threw for two or three touchdowns as well. One of those picks wasn’t his. I like where this team is at. JMatt and C Boyd are going to be stellar wide receivers, the oline will be good, though they struggled with the defense on Saturday. It was more of a testament to our defensive schemes and play of our entire defense. Defensive coordinators Bob Shoop and Brent Pry are masters at creating havoc for the offense. The o line will be fine, and in my opinion, very good under the steady, highly motivated guidance of Coach Herb Hand. It was good to see the defense play well though. Saturday ought to be very compelling and fun. Very much looking forward to it. Will of course have a wrap up Sunday.
