Kansas “Self” Implodes

Bill Self not getting his team over the hump for the most part
How did Kansas lose that game last night to Michigan? I’ll give Wolverines point guard Trey Burke all the credit in the world. He  played like the high first round draft pick he’ll be in the last 10 minutes of that game. But how does Bill Self let his team lose a game when his team was ahead by 10 with three minutes left and five with 13 seconds left. A missed free throw was costly by Elijah Johnson and Burke made the Jayhawks pay with a 30-foot three pointer with eight seconds left that sent the game into overtime which Michigan won.

I like Bill Self. He’s a good guy and a good coach. He’s a really good recruiter as evidenced by the NBA talent he has on the floor. But how do you blow a game like that? Self is starting to remind me of former North Carolina coach Dean Smith. Self can get you close but can’t seem to get you over the hump. He HAS won a national championship in 2008 when Derrick Rose missed one of two free throws with under ten seconds left to put Memphis ahead by only three then Mario Chalmers sank a three as time expired to send the game into overtime which Kansas won. That was the same tournament in which “Cal”, who is another guy who can recruit but I’m not sure is that great of a floor coach, said that “free throws didn’t matter.” He thought his team would win it all anyway. He was wrong. And Derrick Rose is the same guy who had another young person take his SAT for him in high school. Character matters in big moments.

So Self did win that one, but lately it always seems like he gets his team close but can’t get them over the hump. Smith in his 36 years at the helm of North Carolina took his team to 11 Final Fours. That’s impressive. But if you look at it closer, he only won two national championships with guys like Michael Jordan and James Worthy and a plethora of Parade All-Americans on his rosters through the years. The two titles he won were gifts by the other team. One was in 1982 when Michael Jordan, the greatest player of all time though LeBron may have an argument before his illustrious career is over, sank an 18-foot jumper to put Carolina ahead by a point then Georgetown’s “Downtown” Freddie Brown threw a pass right to James Worthy which lost a one point game for the Hoyas to the Tar Heels. The other championship win was in 1993 when Chris Webber of the Fab Five at Michigan called timeout when the Wolverines had no timeouts and cost his team the game because it was a technical and Carolina shot a free throw and got the ball to close out the game. Weber was another guy with questionable character as there was a lot of alleged cheating going on at Memphis. He blew it when it mattered. Bobhy Knight said earlier this year how can you call those guys Fab when they didn’t win anything. I agree.

I was up in Chapel Hill from 1988-90 and didn’t love Smith as a person. I thought he was overrated as a coach. Self is a much better guy than Smith was. Smith was immature and egotistical and liked to put up this persona like he was, as Sports Illustrated’s Frank DeFord called him in a piece, “holier than thou.” It was an act. He wasn’t that great a guy. One time Lefty Driesell of Maryland lost a game to Smith at Chapel Hill that he thought he had won. He and  Smith had an acrimonious relationship. Smith came running up to shake his hand in an obnoxious, offensive way and Driesell almost hit him. Smith’s assistant Bill Guthridge intervened and almost got in a fight with Lefty. Smith always had people take care of his issues and protect him and even physically intimidate other people. To me, he was a coward.

But Self is a good guy. I like him. He has a chance to do great things at Kansas. But right now he’s starting to remind me of Smith in that he’ll get his team close to the summit only to come up short when it counts.

You give Coach K, Rick Pitino and Billy Donovan Dean Smith’s talent and each would have won seven or eight national titles maybe 10-12. I believe in all three of those guys. They are historic coaches. John Wooden had that type of talent and he won 10 national titles in 12 years. Dean Smith just couldn’t get over the hump unless he had a lot of help. Self may do better than that. But I was disappointed in his and his team’s letdown at the end. But we’ll see in the coming years if Self can redeem himself.

As for the other games, I liked the way Florida played. Gulf Coast was too much of a media darling this week, it was way overdone, and Florida kind of put them in their place. Got tired of all the hype with Gulf Coast. Florida-Michigan will be awesome. Louisville took care of business as expected over Oregon, and Duke did as well over Michigan State. Coach K has now won seven of eight meetings against Tom Izzo.

So the Elite Eight is set. I like Ohio State over a very good Wichita State team today and ‘Cuse over Marquette. I’m going with Florida’s defense tomorrow to get it done over Michigan and the ‘Ville to get it done over Duke.

Today:

Syracuse 71, Marquette 66 (4:30 PM ET/ 3:30 CT, CBS)

Ohio State 81, Wichita State 75 (7:05 PM ET/6:05 CT, CBS)

Sunday

Florida 65, Michigan 61 (2:20 PM ET/1:20 CT, CBS)

Louisville 78, Duke 74 (5:05 PM ET/4:05 CT, CBS)

Winner at Shell Houston this weekend

TV: Golf Channel Thursday: 4-7 PM ET; 3-6 PM CT: Friday: 4-7 PM ET; 3-6 CT: Saturday: 1-3 PM ET; 12-2 PM CT; Sunday: 1-3 PM ET; 12-2 PM CT; NBC: Saturday; 3-6 PM ET; 2-5 PM CT; Sunday: 3-6 PM ET; 2-5 PM CT
Johnny Miller has been awesome this year. Really have enjoyed his commentary. He gets on the players, but he really knows the game and he’s insightful and very funny.

Defending champion: Hunter Mahan.

Purse: $6.2 Million; Winner’s share: $1,080,000

Course: Redstone Country Club Tournament Course

Yardage: 7,457 yards

Par 72.

Key Hole: No.18

A 488-yard par four. Tough finishing hole. Water running all the way down the left side with a huge sand trap hugging the left side  as well. The players will try to carry the water as far as possible to set up for a shorter second shot. There is a pretty high risk on the tee shot. The second shot has water on the left and a big bunker on the right. Will be great theater on Sunday.

Winner:

Keegan Bradley:

Four top 10 finishes in 10 events and a tie for third last week at the Arnie. Keegan ready to step in the winner’s circle in the final key tune up for the Masters for many of the big names. Expect Hunter Mahan to play well as the defending champion. Rory playing. He needs to get his game back to where it was before the injury so he can get momentum for the Masters. Brandt Snedeker needs to get his game back to where it was before his injury when he won the AT&T at Pebble Beach. He looked like a real factor at Augusta until the injury. This is an important tournament for him as he seeks to capture his first major. Matt Kuchar not playing. A little surprised by that. Dustin Johnson in the field. He’s a player of interest this week and certainly for the Masters. Phil playing too, and he’s always a threat at Augusta. Still believe a lot in Phil. He’s won the Waste Management this year and has played well a lot of the year. He won the Masters in 2004, 2006 and 2010 so he is certainly a contender at age 42. Phil is certainly a favorite here  as he won here two years ago, 2011. All of these guys would like to win the Shell Houston and get ready for the first major, quite possibly the best major of all and the best tournament ever created. This is a good tournament at Redstone Country Club. The hosts put on a good event and the course is fantastic.

The players are all trying to have a good showing so some or many of them can challenge Tiger in two weeks. He hasn’t won at Augusta since 2005, so it will be very interesting.

Like Keegan's chances to win this week and be a major player at Augusta in two weeks

James adds three; Corbs team take two of three from rival Gators

James hits a triple

Corbs gets two from the hated Gators

We just had a super Saturday in recruiting. James landed three commits for 2014 with high three-star running back Dallas Rivers of Stone Mountain, Georgia, solid three-star safety Emmanuel Smith from Murfreesboro, Tn and solid three star corner/safety Bryce Lewis of Liliburn, Ga all committing to play for us in 2014.

Watched film of Dallas and loved him. 247 has him as a highly ranked three-star, but after watching his film, Dallas is a no doubt four-star. I don’t know why those guys rate Dallas any lower than four. He is fast, very strong, breaks tackles, took it the distance on about every attempt I saw him run, he’s just a fantastic running back. Awesome addition to class. We need running backs in this class. It would be nice to add a couple more and at least one, but Dallas is an exceptional start. Excellent, excellent football player. Didn’t see any film on Bryce or Emmanuel, but saw an interview with Emmanuel and really liked him. Also in the interview was a teammate, an outside linebacker from Murfreesboro for the class of 2015, Josh Smith, who sounded like a great kid as well. Josh is somebody to look out for in the future.

Really pleased with this latest group. They join four-star quarterback K.J. Carta-Samuels and high three-star defensive tackle Jay Robertson in our ’14 class. Welcome aboard guys. Let’s go win championships.

Baseball took two of three from Florida over the weekend. Friday night was a tough night for Zo. Just couldn’t find the strike zone and gave up a three-run homer as we lost 7-1 to them, but Saturday we came back and pounded out 15 hits in a 6-1 victory. Connor had three hits, Conrad had three hits and two rbi’s and Vince Conde had two hits and drove in a run. Yesterday we scratched out a 5-4 win. John Norwood and Yaz with some tremendous hustle on the basepaths as John beat out an infield single to fairly deep short and Yaz scored from second on the grounder to clinch the victory. John did a head first slide to beat the throw at first with two outs, and Yaz just flew around third and barreled into home head first to beat the throw. It was awesome. Pitched decent. Tyler Beede moved his record to 6-0 with the win Saturday Night going 6.1 innings giving up two hits and no runs with four K’s and five walks. Tyler needs to get the base on balls down. He’s struggled a little bit with that this year. If he can, he will dominate. Steven Rice came in out of the bullpen Saturday Night and gave up one run in two innings. Steven pitching a lot better; throwing more strikes. Brian Miller was his typical stellar self yesterday going two innings and allowing no runs. I’ve noticed our bullpen is throwing more strikes now. They’ll get it going. Miller is awesome. Florida is a very young team, but as Corbs said yesterday, they remind me a lot of our team last year. They’re going to be very good by the end of the year. We moved to 21-4 overall and 5-1 in the East. We’re on top of the East, one game ahead of  Kentucky.

Brandt didn’t have a good tourney this weekend. Hope he can get it back together this weekend at Houston. Coming back after injury and playing in a big event like the Arnie is tough. Need Brandt to get back in form this week so he’ll be ready for Augusta. Luke is the first alternate so maybe he’ll get in too. Looks like Eldrick will win, thought it’s getting pretty interesting. Eldrick at -13 and Rickie Fowler at -11 through 15. Fowler playing well, so Eldrick could be in for a fight.

Bracket doing pretty well. My wife’s is doing awesome (i picked it but she’s just a winner). Would like for Ole Miss to have won last night. I’m in 2.7 mill and change place, tied basically with Obama in the 72.3 percentage. Have the Ville beating Miami in the championship. I figured out there are about 9 million players in the ESPN bracket. My wife is in the 98.6 percentile, she’s in 166,000th place. Pretty good stuff there. Got Miami beating Ohio State in hers.

Next year at this time,  I hope our team will be in the Sweet 16. Think we have the team to make a deep run in ’14. The whole team returns and we played so well in the tournament, just ran out of gas on Saturday against Ole Piss. They turned out to be a pretty good basketball team though. They should have beaten LaSalle last night. Henderson got hit on the arm before he put up a shot at the end, but the refs didn’t call it. Then LaSalle hit a layup. Ole Miss was a very nice offensive team, but was a little weak on defense. That cost them last night.

With Kede, Dai-Jon, Kyle, transfer Eric McClellan (who’s apparently awesome), the phenomenal Kevin Bright, Rod, Josh, Shelby, James Siakam (  James can be a player), A.J. Astroth (who looks potentially good) and four-star center Damian Jones coming in, we have the makings of an excellent basketball team. Very excited about next year. We should be special.

Football practice going very well. A lot of competition out there. Ready for Ole Miss on August 29 (Thursday) at 9:15 PM ET/8:15 CT on ESPN. Should be electric in the stadium. I know we’ve got a lot of work to do until then, but ready for it.

Baseball hosts Lipscomb tomorrow night at 6:30 CT, then UT comes in this weekend. They’re better, 3-3 in East, 13-10 overall. Looking to take care of business tomorrow night against Lipscomb, which has struggled, then sweep the Vols. Saturday Night’s game at 7 ET/6 CT will be on CSS.

Check with you later.

The Arnie

Tournament: Arnold Palmer Invitational
Where: Bay Hill Club and Lodge, Orlando, Florida

Course: 7,381 yards, par 72

Architect: Dick Wilson

Purse: $6,000,000

Winner’s share: $1,080,000

Defending champion: Tiger Woods (-13)

TV Times: Today: Golf Channel: 2-5 PM CT; 7:30-10:30 PM CT; Friday: Golf Channel: 2-5 PM CT; 7:30-10:30 PM CT; Saturday: Golf: 11:30 AM-1:30 PM CT; NBC: 1:30-5 PM CT; Golf: 8:30 PM-2 AM CT; Sunday: Golf: 11:30 AM-1:30 PM CT; NBC: 1:30-5 PM CT; Monday: Golf: 11 AM-4 PM CT.

Weather:  Today: High 71; winds NW 11 MPH; Friday: 77; winds 9 MPH East Northeast; Saturday: 86, winds: 16 MPH; 30% chance of rain with a chance for severe weather; Sunday: 84; 60 percent chance of rain; winds 17 MPH.

There are some pretty cool par 5’s on Bay Hill. No.4 is a 581 par-5, which is a three shot hole for many of the players. Tough driving hole. Tight on the left with trees. Tiger has been tearing up the par 5’s at Bay HIll. No.6 is a 555 par 5. A very interesting hole with water running down the entire left side of the hole. Pretty cool driving hole. No. 12 is a 574 par five that looks like a lay up for some except for guys like Tiger and Bubba who hit it a ton. No.16 is the final par five and at 511 very reachable in two. The 17th is an excellent 221-yard par 3. Ernie, who was trying to get into third place last year to qualify for Augusta, made a costly bogey on this hole, when he hit his tee shot in the mud in front of the green, blasted out into the sand and hit out of the sand and bogeyed the hole. He didn’t finish third and didn’t make it the next week at the Shell Open and and did not get in the Masters. There was talk about giving Ernie an exemption, but Johnny Miller made a good point about it in this tourney last year saying golf is a merit game, it’s not a sentimental game. As much as I like Ernie, I agree with that thinking.

The 18th is a classic 458-yard par four, and was the toughest hole on the course last year. It’s a straightaway tee shot to a wide fairway, but that’s where the basic shot ends. The second shot is to a kidney shaped green, over water and rocks with bunkers protecting the back of the green. The pin will be tucked on the right front on Sunday most likely making it hard to get it close leading to a long birdie putt that could lead to a three putt. It’s a risky shot to go at the stick with this pin location as the water and rocks will be very much in play with that decision. Very difficult second shot and could lead to great drama on Sunday.

Contenders:

Graeme McDowell:

Played well here last year finishing second to Tiger though he couldn’t give Tiger a run for his money on Sunday. Great driver and putter which this course requires.

Brandt Snedeker:

I know he’s been off five weeks, but I loved his interview on Tuesday. Seemed rested, refreshed and ready to go. He’s recovered from an intercostal muscle injury, but he’s been working hard and I think he’s primed to win a major this year. He moved while he was injured but couldn’t move any furniture or boxes. As the Golf Channel reporter said it’s the old hurt back routine during moving. Augusta will be a good place for Brandt to get his first major. He loves Augusta and usually plays well there. Bay Hill and the Shell Houston next week will be good tuneups for him as he gets back in the mix.

Phil:

Always a threat to win. If he can putt well, Phil could be in the hunt on Sunday.

I’m pretty surprised that McIlroy is not playing. Arnie was pretty surprised as well. Seems to be a mistake as this is the best tuneup for Augusta left before the Masters in three weeks. Don’t know his reasons for not playing. Seems like a major mistake to me.

Winner:

Has there been a more prohibitive favorite at a tournament this year than Tiger at Bay Hill? Not even close. Tiger at Torrey Pines is close and Tiger at the Memorial is also, but he’s won this event seven times and is trying to tie Sam Snead for the most victories in one event at eight. Snead won the Greater Greensboro Open eight times. Another big deal for Tiger is he’s going for career win number 77, 5 short of Snead’s all time record of 82. And this is tremendous preparation for Augusta. There will be more work to be done after this tourney, but this is a very nice steppingstone to Augusta. As long as Tiger’s driving the ball like he has been lately and like he did last year here and putting beautifully as he did last year, he’ll be unstoppable. Sean Foley’s work with Tiger is really paying off. He won three times last year and has already won twice this year. Tiger put on a clinic here last year. Some times a sure thing doesn’t always work out, but I’m betting that this one will. And Augusta is getting closer and closer. That should really be compelling as Woods–who is chasing the Nicklaus record (18 majors)– is starting to play the kind of golf we saw him play back in the early 2000’s. If he gets back to that level, which is starting to look possible, he’s got a good shot of breaking it. Hopefully the weather won’t be an issue this weekend.

Awesome victory, baseball rotation vs. AU, James never backs down to anyone

Rod was awesome last night

So was Kyle

75-72 over Hogs. Kind of got a little edgy at the end, but Kede sank four-of-four from the line to close it out. Struggled from the line sinking 17-of-28 (57%). Rod had an off night converting only 3-of-11, but that was OK because Rod played a super game with 20 points and seven boards. Rod was five-of-nine from three. Kyle was awesome too. Took the team on his back in the first half and got us out to a comfortable lead. Kyle was sinking threes and driving and scoring at the rim. Kyle finished with 19. If you look at the other guy’s free throw numbers they were pretty good. Kyle was six-of-eight, Kede was four-of-five, K Bright was two-of-two and Dai-Jon and Josh were each one-of-two. Rod will work on it today. Rod and Kyle showed a ton of leadership last night. They took the team over and got us over the top in this game. Hung tough on the boards; Arkansas got 39, we got 37. If we can stay that close tonight, we’ve got a shot. Only had 12 turnovers which was huge.  Turned it over some late, but we really took care of the basketball for most of the game. And we sank 12-of-28 trifectas (43%). If we can do that tonight also, feel good about our chances. They shot 43 percent from the field but only sank four-of-16 from three. We played solid defense most of the night. Just loved Rod and Kyle’s leadership and awesome play. Really proud of them. Bodes well for tonight.

Tonight it’s UK at 7:30 ET/6:30 CT on the SEC Network. If we could win tonight, you never know. There could be some magic in this team in this tournament. I love the makeup of our team for next year, but I’m really also liking it right now. As Kevin said, we wouldn’t have won this kind of game in January or February. This was a huge boost to our confidence. Big Blue is talented, but we’ve played them tough both times. We lost 70-68 at home in a game in which there was a terrible missed call on a shot clock violation by Kentucky that was allowed. Nerlins Noel sank a shot after the shot clock expired but he was awarded the basket. It was at a pivotal time late in the game and probably kept us from winning that game. We lost 74-70 at Rupp, and played them very tough there also. So we’ve got a very good shot. We lost to them twice last year in the regular season and beat them in the tournament championship game. I really believe in that theory that it’s hard to beat a team three  times in a season if the talent is pretty even, and I think that’s the case this season. I like our chances. It’ll be tough, but I know we’ll be ready. Should be exciting.

Starters for this weekend’s series against Auburn are LHP Zo (4-0, 0.87) vs. Auburn LHP Daniel Koger (0-0, 2.42) 6 PM CT; RHP Tyler (4-0, 1.07) vs. AU LHP Michael O’Neal, 2:15 PM CT, Fox Sports South; and Sunday, at 1 PM CT, LHP Phillip Pfeifer (2-0, 1.32) vs. AU RHP Rocky McCord (2-0, 3.44).

Would be nice to get the season started with a sweep, but I know how Corbs and all three of our coaches approach it; one game at a time. Let’s just win tonight and go from there.

I’ve thought more about James’ comment, “Nicky Satan.” It was James being James. James admits openly that he’s emotional and passionate and those two qualities are his greatest strengths and his greatest weaknesses. I think for the most part they are his greatest strengths. I love James’ passion about his football team, his university and his family and his community. James is such a great, passionate guy and an awesome coach. On the Nicky Satan comment. I know James kind of wishes he had that back, but at the same time, he respects Coach Saban  as a football coach, but you know what, Saban’s a rival and we are not going to back down from anybody. Those days are over. That’s not happening any more with our football team or our university. We respect Saban, but if we play him and his football team, we are in it to win. So I’m OK with James being competitive towards a rival. That’s college football. That’s passion and emotion. And I love James’ passion. What’s not to like about our head football coach? Awesome football coach. Awesome person. Feel the same way about Corbs and Kevin. We have three fantastic coaches.

Our men’s golf team has some real potential. We have a new coach, Scott Limbaugh, who came from the University of Alabama and has brought passion and toughness to our team. Will have more on the golf team in the coming weeks. The future both this year and the coming years is very exciting. Women’s tennis is doing well too. Our girls bball team is waiting till Monday Night to see if we’ll get an NCAA  bid. We’ve got a pretty good shot. We’ve had a good season. Like the girls a lot.

Will keep you informed on what’s going on. Big one tonight at Bridgestone Arena. Can’t wait. Baseball should be fun this weekend too. Love the product Corbs is putting on the field. He’s awesome. We have incredibly good coaches.

Just got to win one in a row…

Just win baby
And it’s a hard one, but Kevin’s one at a time approach is the only way we can look at this tournament. Have Arkansas tonight. They killed us at Bud Walton Arena in January, 56-33, then we got them at Memorial, 67-49.

Arkansas is 19-12 overall and have slim hopes of making the tournament. But everybody’s got a shot to win this tournament and automatically qualify for the NCAA’s, so that’s the way we’re approaching it and that’s the way Arkansas is approaching it. It’s kind of a wide open tourney, even though Florida won the regular season. Florida showed it’s vulnerable on the road.

Arkansas was 18-1 at home, but 1-9 on the road and 0-2 at neutral sites. They are led by the explosive B.J. Young, a guard who lit us up early in the second half at their place. Young is averaging 14 points per game. Marshawn Powell is a load in the middle, 6’8″, 255, and averages almost 14 a game and 5.3 rebounds. They’re a good rebounding team averaging 34.9 per game. We average 32.9. We need to win the battle on the glass to win this game.

Other key factors for us are controlling Arkansas’ chaotic defense both in the half court and the full court. We need to avoid a lot of  turnovers. We’ll have some, but we need to keep it in the single digits or about 10-11 to win this game. We can’t allow them to go on a big run or we’re in trouble. We need to make seven or eight threes and sink our free throws at a 70-75 percent clip if we get to the line much. We’re now at 63 percent. That number has climbed steadily in the past three weeks. Shooting it a lot better at the stripe.

Josh Henderson, Shelby Moats, and I hope, James Siakam are going to have to play strong for us down low. Kede, Kevin Bright, Dai-Jon, Kyle and Sheldon will have to sink shots, find the open man or be the open man and convert and get after their guards and small forwards on defense.

We can definitely get this done. It will take a very good effort, but we’ll be in Nashville, and even though it’s not at Memorial–it’s at the Bridgestone Arena downtown–we’re playing in our home town which helps. Should be a fun one. 7:30 PM ET/6:30 CT on the SEC Network.

Baseball at Auburn this weekend. Exciting to start the SEC season. We’re now 16-2 after taking two of three from Oregon on the road and taking care of business against Buffalo yesterday at home, 4-2. Zo will pitch Friday in a 6 PM CT start. Tyler Beede will be on the hill Saturday with a 2:15 PM CT first pitch which will be televised by Fox Sports South. Phillip Pfeifer will take the mound on Sunday with a 1 PM CT start. Kevin Ziomek (Zo, Friday starter) is 4-0 with a 0.87 ERA and 46 K’s in 31 innings. He’s walked only seven. Zo is dominant. Second baseman Tony Kemp is on fire hitting .438 now. He has four doubles and three triples and now has 18 triples in his three-year career. He had a two-run triple yesterday. Got everything we need to go to Omaha and win there. We’re getting back to being healthy. Catcher Spence Navin sprained his ankle last Sunday against Oregon, but Corbs is hoping he’ll be back for this series. Chris Harvey has been catching in his place. Harvey getting better and better on defense and his hitting is potentially awesome; both for average and power. We’re going to like Harvey in the future. May need to catch some this weekend. Probably will. T.J. Pecoraro coming along from his hamstring injury. Hopefully, Pec will be back for Florida next weekend. May be a couple of weeks though. Some other guys are getting healthy which is always good. Almost swept No.15 Oregon last week. Had a 5-2 lead going into the bottom of the eighth, but couldn’t hold it. Still like our bullpen. They’ll get it going. Brian Miller is a stud as our closer. Brian is 2-0 with an 0.57 ERA and four saves. He has 13 K’s in 15.2 innings. He’s going to be a workhorse for us this season. Stephen Rice, Jared Miller and guys like Carson Fulmer and Tyler Ferguson have a chance to be excellent. Adam Ravanelle is coming back from injury, and Corbs is high on Adam out of the pen. I believe Adam comes out of the pen. So he’ll help too. Msy be a week-dsy starter too. Our team ERA is 1.96. That’ll win you a lot of games. Like the makeup of this team like I’ve written earlier. Good shot at going deep this year. Very deep. Need to be lucky on injuries. If we are, this year’s teams’ chances are very good to be in Omaha and win the national championship.

Looked at film on next year’s commits: d tackle Jay Robertson and qb K.J. Carta-Samuels. Loved them both. Jay buries people at the line of scrimmage. He’s quick off the ball and very, very physical. K.J. has awesome accuracy and a strong arm. Excellent mobility too, and I can’t get over how good of a passer he is. He’s special as is Jay. Jay a high three-star by 247 and not rated by Rivals, but could very well be a four-star if he keeps this up. Won the state heavyweight wrestling championship and that’s always a sign. Terrific athlete and looks to be very tough. Just need to keep reeling these ’14 guys in.

James spoke with the media on Monday and you can tell he’s excited about this football team. Austyn Carta-Samuels will most likely be our qb and we’re going to like Austyn a lot. He started his freshman year at Wyoming and was Mountain West freshman of the year four years ago. Austyn played a game for us last year and did a nice job. Austyn has a chance to be outstanding. Wide receiver will be awesome with JMatt and Chris Boyd as our leaders. They are fantastic players. We now have 15 scholarship offensive linemen with size and talent. James expects us to be 300 across the front this year. Wes Tate, Brian Kimbrow, Jerron Seymour and Derek King will be our running backs. Freshman Raphael Webb may get redshirted, but looks like a Zac Stacy type to me. Need to land a couple of rbs in recruiting. Expect some big things out of Wes Tate and the other guys this year. James said that tight end should be much better this year with jc transfer Brandon Vandenburg possibly taking over. We’ve got pretty good depth there. Vandenberg is 6’6″, 260.

Defense will be a little bit thin at  d tackle, but we’ll be good there with the guys we have. Jared Morse has been suspended from the team and school. He may come back in the fall. That remains to be seen. Guys like Vince Taylor and Barron Dixon will need to step up in the interior. Pretty good at d end though with the hard-working, physical Walker May as our leader. The coaches are expecting huge things from Caleb Azubike. Could be a beast on the end. Caleb is now 6’5″, 255. He’s going to be awesome. Linebacker is deep with a lot of young guys who are very talented. Chase Garnham, an excellent player in the middle and a senior, will be our leader there. Secondary will be anchored by safeties Kenny Ladller and Javon Marshall and corner Andre Hal. Love those guys and there is a lot of talent back there.

Kicking game will be good with Carey Spear. We lost Richard Kent, our stellar punter, so we’ll need to replace him.

Play all the east teams; South Carolina, Florida and UT are on the road. Georgia, Mizzou and Ky are at home. Two west opponents are Ole Miss (as usual) and A&M. We open with Ole Miss Thursday, Aug. 29th, @9:15 PM ET/ 8:15 CT on ESPN. Huge opener. Toughest games are @ SC, @Florida and @A&M. Expecting eight wins or better. That is where this program is right now, and it is ascending each and every day. Spring practice begins tomorrow. The spring game is Saturday, April 13, @ 1PM CT.

Brandt will get back on the tour next week at Bay Hill for the Arnie Invitational. Will be good to get him back. He’s been working hard on his short game while recovering from rib problems. He broke his rib last year, so he has to be smart about it. Will be hitting balls for real on Sunday according to his coach, Todd Anderson. Anderson said Brandt will be going full force beginning Sunday. Luke at +2 today through 16 at the Tampa Bay Championship. Leaders at -3. Luke eeds to finish strong and have a good round tomorrow.

Will have bball review, hopefully with a good result, and pitching matchups tomorrow on blog.

This week at Copperhead

Tampa Bay Championship

Innisbrook Resort-Copperhead Course, Palm Harbor, Florida

7,340 yards, Par-71

Field: 156 players

Defending champion: Luke Donald  (-13), won in a four-way playoff

Purse: $5.5 million

Winner’s share: $990,000

TV Times: Golf Channel: Thursday: 2-5 PM CT; 7:30-10:30 PM CT; Friday: 2-5 PM CT; 9:30 PM-12:30 AM CT; Saturday: 12:30-2 PM CT; Sunday: 12-2 PM CT; NBC: Saturday: 2-5 PM CT; Sunday: 2-5 PM CT.

Analysis:

The key holes are in the snake pit: No. 16, 17 and 18. Sixteen is a 460 yard Par 4. Driving is critical on this hole as water stretches along the entire right side. Any player who cuts it too much will go in the drink. The second shot is a long one to a wide green. This hole will be a determining factor in the outcome on Sunday.

No.17 is a 215 yard par 3. Bunkers and trees line both sides of a very narrow green. Birdie is a very good score and par is safe. Ernie Els made bogey here last year but was still tied for the lead going to 18.

No.18 is an uphill 445, par 4. Beautiful hole. This is an awesome course. An accurate tee shot leaves an uphill second shot to an elevated, hidden green. The putting surface slopes back to front and has bunkers short and long. Ernie unfortunately missed a three-footer for par and missed the playoff with Luke Donald, Robert Garrigus, Sun Moon Bae and Jim Furyk. It was painful for Ernie and he was so dejected in the post round interview. He didn’t qualify for the Masters, but redeemed himself winning the British at Royal Lytham and St. Annes to capture his fourth major title; two U.S. Opens and two Open Championships. He’s a hall of famer and has earned it. But this one came down to these four guys and Luke won it with a seven-foot birdie putt that just dropped  in the left side of the hole. Garrigus had just barely missed a nine footer for birdie right before Luke’s winner. Furyk and Bae parred. Luke regained his spot as the No.1 player in the world. He is now No.3 behind Rory and Tiger.

Who can win:

Guys I see who have a shot are Kuuuuch, because he’s been playing lights out up until last week, which I think was an aberration, and tied for 10th last year. Jason Dufner finished T-10 last year. Think he’s ready to get it going. If he putts well he’ll be right in it. Luuuke of course. With that putter he’s always a threat and he’s a very solid driver. Not long, but accurate. Webb Simpson. Webb also finished T-10 last year and he’s had a pretty good year so far. Sean O’Hair. Kind of a reach, but he’s a Florida guy and plays the Florida courses well. Like him to have a good week.Still think he can do some good things on the tour.

Winner:

This is a reach somewhat, but I’m going to pick the guy who leads the tour in strokes gained putting. He’s had a couple of top 25’s and has made all six cuts he’s played in. He played with Kuchar at Ga. Tech, was a four-time All American and Player of the year his senior year. He was considered the next big thing when he came out in the early 2000’s. He shot a 60 playing with former President Clinton on his home course in Arkansas a while back. I know that doesn’t mean a lot to Cooperhead, but I feel like this guy still has ability to be a big time player on the tour. Solid player. This season has been unpredictable with guys like Michael Thompson winning the Honda, Russell Henley winning at the Sony in Hawaii and John Merrick winning at the Northern Trust at Riviera. There  have been the consistent winners winning in Tiger, Phil and Sneds, but the field is so deep and talented now that it’s anybody’s game in these regular events. I’m going with  this guy because of his solid overall game and particularly his putting ability.

Zo brilliant

Kevin ZiomekKevin Ziomek dominated the Oregon Ducks last night with a two-hit, one run, one walk and 13 K performance as #2 VU moved to 14-1 with a 4-1 victory.
Zo is now 4-0 on the season an 0.87 ERA. In 31 innings of work, Zo has given up three runs, walked seven and struck out 46. Wow, that’s pretty awesome stuff.

Tony Kemp had two hits and two RBIs including a two-run triple. Clean game, no errors.

Today Tyler Beede takes the mound vs. Oregon’s Tommy Thorpe. Tyler is 3-0 with a 1.45 ERA with nine walks and 20 Ks in 18.2 innings. Thorpe, a lefty, is 2-1 with a 3.12 ERA. Tomorrow Phillip Pfeifer (2-0, 0.45) goes against LHP Cole Irvin (3-0, 2.05).

Today’s first pitch is at 4 PM CT. Tomorrow’s game starts at 2 PM CT.

Sunday:Golf Channel: 12 -2 PM ET; 11 AM-1 PM CT; NBC: 3-7 PM ET; 2-6 PM CT.AM

NBC lead commentators: Dan Hicks and Johnny Miller

2012 winner: Justin Rose (-16)

Commentary: 1,10 and 12 are considered the easiest holes on the course. One is a par 5, 529 yards, and of the 882 holes played on the PGA tour last year, one at Doral was rated as the easiest hole. Number Ten is a par 5, 551 that will be downwind making the hole shorter. The long hitters will be hitting three, four and five iron to this green on their second shot. Many birdies and a few eagles are expected on this hole. Number 12 is a 603-yard, par 5. There won’t be many players hitting the green in two. Over 400 trees have been planted on the right side and there is a huge bunker on the right that stretches from 96 to 166 yards from the green. A birdie hole, but not an eagle hole. The last three winners at Doral have been -9 on these three holes for the four days. There is no cut in this tourney. All but two of the top 50 players in the world are playing. Snedeker out; not sure who the other is.

Some other holes make up for those scoreable holes. Three (Par 4, 438) is considered the most difficult driving hole on the course. A miss right will find the lake, a miss left will find the deep rough or tough fairway bunker. Approach shots are critical as a sharp slope to the left of the green makes for a very difficult up an down. Number four is a 236 yard par three and a pivotal hole. It’s the hardest par-3 on the course at 236 though 13 is 10 yards longer. Two deep bunkers guard the left side any slight miss on the right will be water bound.

Number 17 is a par-4, 419 yard hole that plays 15 yards longer due to the players hitting into the wind. Green guarded by bunkers. A back pin placement requires a shot over a deep and intimidating bunker guarding the green’s left side.

Number 18 was rated as the second toughest hole on the tour last year, just behind number 6 at Olympic Club (U.S. Open). It’s a par-4, 467 yards The drive is extremely challenging and with the pressure on Sunday, it gets even tougher. There is water guarding the entire left side and trees on the right. A lot of trouble. Longer hitters have a wider landing surface, but going for it takes a lot of courage. Should be some real dramatics here on Saturday and especially Sunday.

Contenders:

1.Tiger Woods

Has won at the Blue Monster six times (’99, ’02, ’03, ’05, ’06, ’07). Can he break out this week? His ball striking is still solid. Just needs to make putts.

2.Matt Kuuuchar

Most consistent player on the tour right now coming off his match play win two weeks ago. Hasn’t ever won at Doral, but his win at the Players last year proved he’s a big-time, elite player. One of the best putters on the tour and just super solid player.

3.Hunter Mahan:

Coming off a second place finish at Match Play two weeks ago. Short game has vastly improved and crushes the ball. Excellent ball striker. If his short game is there, he’ll be in it on Sunday.

4.Geoff Ogilvy:

Back from a slump for a three or four years, Ogilvy finished second last week at the Honda playing terrific golf. His chip in on 16 at the Honda was masterful. He won here in 2008. Like where his game is at right now. He’s back.

5. Phil:

Won here in 2009 and always a threat on the Florida swing. Game is pretty solid right now. Striking the ball extremely well, particularly off the tee, and his modified claw putting grip seems to be working well. If his short game is on, Phil definitely will be a factor.

6. Robert Garrigus:

He’s due. Tremendous driver of the ball and a pretty darn good putter. Waiting for him to take it to the next level and win one. Expect him to be in the mix on Sunday.

7. Luuuke Donald

His putter will always keep him in it if he can hit his driver and approach shots solidly. He, Snedeker and Kuchar are the best putters on the tour right now.

Winner:

Geoff Ogilvy

Think Geoff is ready to break out and recapture some of his magic from 2006-’08. Won the U.S. Open in 2006 at Winged Foot. He’s won three World Golf Championships in his career.

Like Geoff to recapture magic from first decade
