Huge!

I heard VU color commentator Tim Thompson call it during the game and Sheldon Jeter say it in the postgame that they thought the shot was good when it was in the air then off when it hit the rim and then beautifully it hit the center of the backboard and swished through the net. What a huge win for our basketball team. The first half looked bleak, but the second half was fantastic. Kede, Sheldon and Josh were huge and KB always gives us excellent minutes. He’s a big time player as are the others. KB a frosh, Sheldon a frosh, Josh, Kede and Dai Jon are sophomores. Rod and Kyle are juniors and Shelby and James Siakam are sophomores. A. J, Astroth, whom I think can help us in the future, is a freshman guard. Really like the future of this group, but the future is now. We’ve been through a lot of wars this season, grown, learned how to win–last night was huge–and we’ve got momentum heading into March. Just so proud of the guys. Thought when Sheldon was called for the charge, which was a block, in which he sank the basket, fired Sheldon and the whole team up. We played some beautiful offense and defense in the second half. Just a terrific win for our team. Go to Auburn on Saturday at 9 PM ET/8 CT on the deuce (ESPN2). Like the way this team has come together. Didn’t like the first half, but loved the second half. After Auburn, we’re at Florida, Wed.at 8/7 on SEC Network, then at home to close out regular season on Saturday, March 9, against South Carolina at 1;30/12:30 on SEC Network. Really like where we’re at right now. Just got to focus on Auburn. We’re at their place so we have to bear down.

Baseball playing lights out. Just crushing the ball. Won 13-1 over Evansville yesterday after winning a hard fought win over Arkansas State 7-3 in a game we scored late in to close out. Now 9-1 on the season. Play a pretty good Illinois-Chicago team at home this weekend. Friday’s game is at 4 PM, Saturday is at 2 and Sunday is at noon. All times are Central. Connor Harrell is just knocking the cover off the ball hitting .400 with four homers and 21 ribbies on the season. Tony Kemp hitting .432 with eight stolen bases. Tony just a phenomenal player. Jack Lupo hitting .367 with nine stolen bases in 10 attempts and Yaz hitting .344 with seven stolen bases in eight attempts. The starting pitching has been terrific. Tyler Beede looks like the dominant pitcher we thought he’d be when he was a first round draft pick out of high school but he chose to come our way. He’s a sophomore. Zo pitching very well. T.J. Pecoraro still hurt a little, but hopefully we’ll get Pec back soon. Still the starting pitching and the bullpen has been phenomenal. Defense outstanding particularly lately (last four games). Vince Conde starting to hit the ball like we thought he could. Vince playing very well. Vince hitting .355. Have a few injuries with shortstops Joel McKeithan and Dansby Swanson battling some leg issues but we’ll get them back at some point. Love this squad. Love the potential. Big weekend with Illinois-Chicago then Eastern Illinois comes to town next Tuesday at 4 then we go to top 10 team Oregon for a weekend set next weekend (March 3-5). SEC season starts March 15th, a Friday. We’ll be at Auburn for a weekend series.
Finally, Warren Norman has decided to hang up the cleats. Warren was such a stellar player for us in 2009 as a freshman running back three kicks for touchdowns, scoring 12 TDs overall and running for over 1,000. With a healthy Warren and Zac the last two years we could have had the best rushing attack in the SEC if not the country if you throw in Wes Tate. Just a classy, classy young man. Will get his degree in December of this year and matriculate to the working world. Warren not sure what he wants to do, but James says he will be helping with the running backs this fall. James said that Warren made it clear he’s not going to work the coaches’ hours this fall though. Warren going to study abroad in London this May. Really an awesome young man and he loves VU. What a great Dore! Warren will be a success and we get to have him on the sidelines this fall working with Wes, Kimbrow, Jerron Seymour and freshman Rapheal Webb. Spring game is April 13 at 1 PM CT.

Really like one guy here

He’s the guy who shot 62 in the final round here last year at the Honda Classic on the PGA National Champion Course. Look for holes 15-17 and of course 18 to determine the outcome. Holes 15-17 are called the “Bear Trap”. The course is a Nicklaus design and 15, a 175-yard par-three over water. Sixteen, a 434-yard par-four with water in play on the right and 17, a difficult par-3 over water with a bunker in back, poses a major-like challenge for the players. 18 is a par-five and a chance to go for it over water onto a pretty small green. The guy I’m talking about birdied 17 and eagled 18 last year to put the heat on Rory who made a couple of clutch up and downs from the traps on 15 and 17 to hold off this challenger at the end and capture the title.
Like Keegan, Charl Schartzel, Harris English, Brendan Steele and Lee Westwood to be in the hunt. Rory has changed equipment to Nike, and although he’s capable, just not sure he’s played enough and his game is just not there yet this year.

The guy I like  could be set for a  big year on his journey to rewrite the golf history books. Like one Eldrick Tiger Woods to get it done this week. He’s from Jupiter Beach, which is very close to Palm Beach Gardens where the tournament is being played, and has a lot of experience on these courses in the area. Tiger plays Jack courses very well as evidenced by his five Memorial wins. Tiger ready to take center stage this week. Win number 76, six behind Sam Snead, should be forthcoming this weekend. The major record is still out there. Woods at 14, four shy of tying Jack, and five short of breaking the record. I’m sure 19 is the number Tiger is looking for.

Final Four and Winner at the Accenture World Golf Championships Match Play

Played in Maran, Arizona, just outside of Tuscon.

My Final Four:

Sergio in the Hogan bracket

Rory in the Bobby Jones bracket

Webb in the Gary Player bracket

Ian Poulter in the Sam Snead bracket.

Semis:

Sergio over Rory and Poulty over Webb

Winner:

Sergio over Poulter 1 Up

Just like the way Sergio is playing and he’s a gamer. So is Poulty as evidenced by the Ryder Cup. It’s a crapshoot every week on tour with the tremendous depth this year and it seems like it’s been that way every year the past four or so years. No dominant player though Tiger could be again and Rory could be too, but a lot of tremendous golfers and potential dominators in Keegan, Webb, Sergio (still like him) and Sneds and many others. It’s what makes these events so thrilling. This one ought to be fun.

Of course, central time is an hour earlier for example tonight is 5:30 PM CT to 10:30 PM CT on the Golf Channel. NBC has it 1-5 PM CT on Saturday and 1-5 PM on Sunday with Golf Channel airing it 8AM-noon CT on Sunday. Good stuff with the interesting and somewhat controversial Johnny Miller commentating as usual for NBC. I like Miller overall I guess, but sometimes he grates on my nerves with his caustic criticism of the players. I do like it when he gets on Eldrick, but he can be a little rough on all of the players at  times. Really like Gary Koch. He’s my favorite golf broadcaster out there.

Play is delayed once again due to bad weather–they had an inch of snow yesterday, and it’s scheduled to start back up at 3 PM ET/2 CT. I’ve not looked at any scores before making this prediction. I did see Sergio was leading his match yesterday but already liked the way he was playing coming in and had him pegged to win.

The Golf Club at Dove Mountain in Marana is a Jack Nicklaus 2009 design. Didn’t see a course layout on PGAtour. com, but I do remember the par-4 15th as a pivotal hole on the North Course. The players are hitting right into the mountainside that backs up the green on this approximately 331-yard, par-4. Another stadium-style hole like 17 at the Waste Management in Phoenix and 18 at Riviera at the Northern Trust last week. Gofer hole for the big hitters. Possible win-loss hole in a match. Usually makes for excellent theater on Sunday.Should be an awesome event. Ready for this. Hope they can get something done today because the rest of the weekend looks very nice with low 60’s and sunny Friday and Sunday and 69 and sunny on Saturday. They’ll get it done.

No.16 is a 247 yard par-3 with the drama expected on Sunday. Of course, 18 is a 485 par four, and a very pivotal hole as you would expect.

The Dove Mountain Course is the longest course on tour this year at 7,791 yards.

Fantastic effort by the guys in an outstanding game; baseball rolling

As Kevin said, “We didn’t come here to play close. We thought we could win.” I always agree with that. The reason Kevin says that is he knows he has a good basketball team despite the 74-70 loss to Ky last night. And as strict a judge as he is on his basketball team, he has to be pleased with how the offense played last night. That’s a very good sign. Defense wasn’t where it needed to be, but it was good to see us knock down shots. Kentucky still has five, five-star players in their rotation and the rest of the players are four-stars, so they’re still a very talented basketball team and still have a pretty good shot at making the tournament even without Nerlin Noels, their five-star frosh center and dominant player who tore his ACL last week at Florida. But I thought we showed we can play with anybody in the SEC last night at Rupp, one of the most hostile places in the country to play. When they would sink a three or score on a dunk, the crowd would be wild, but we’d come right back and sink a three or a mid range or Josh would score inside. I thought we showed a lot of mental toughness last night and that’s a good sign for the rest of this season. We are a good basketball team. The record doesn’t reflect that we’ve played that well (10-15 overall, 4-9 SEC), but we just keep getting better and better.

Kede, despite his shoulder acting up again–somebody hit him on a layup and it got knocked out of socket again–played courageously and put up some nice numbers: 17 points, seven assists and only one turnover. Kede was two-of-four from three and seven-of-eight from the line. Kevin said after Kede hurt his shoulder in the first half again, he wasn’t the same but hung tough. Always proud of Kede. With Kede, Kyle, transfer Eric McClellan and Dai-Jon, we’ve got a really nice guard rotation next year. Darrius Thompson de-committed from us two days ago, but that’s OK. With those four, if they all stay healthy, we will have a formidable backcourt next year. A.J. Astroth, one of our freshmen, looks like he could be a pretty good player for us too in the backcourt. Thompson just didn’t think he could play right away and he’s probably right. Think we have better players than he’d be next year. I watched film of him and I liked him for the most part, but he wasn’t a dominant player by any means. Think the guys we have are better. If we could reel in a power forward in this late period, that would be awesome.

Liked the way Josh played. He was five-of-seven from the field and three-of-four from the line for 13 points. Would like to see him hit the boards better, he only had two pulls, but love how his offensive game keeps developing. Needs to bear down and bang with guys like Willie Cauley-Stein, Ky’s big seven-footer. Josh will keep developing and keep getting better. He’s smart and very skilled. Rod had an outstanding first half and did some things in the second half. Just need to get a consistent, two-half game from Rod. He finished with 16 points, but only one board. Didn’t have his best defensive night either, but he’s been very good on offense and had been playing terrific defense lately. Rod will be fine. He’s a very good player. He was four-of-six from trifecta.

Kyle played an excellent game. Had two beautiful drives and scores to the basket at the end of the first half that kept the game within reach. Kyle finished with 14 on five-of-10 from the field and 2-of-3 from trifecta. Had only one assist but it was a beauty to Josh for the stick in. Kyle needs to get those assist numbers up, but he’s a very important player on this team. Dai-Jon and Kevin B didn’t have their best nights. Sheldon sank a three, but wasn’t a big factor and Shelby did OK. He always hustles. The whole team does. Sheldon will be a good player for us without a doubt. Needs to just keep gaining confidence on the court. He definitely has the ability to be an excellent player.

We shot 42% from the field in the first half and 46.4% in the second half. We sank 6-of-10 threes in the first half and 4-of-12 in the second stanza for 45.5% overall (10-of-22). We were 8-of-14 from the line in the first half and 6-of-8 in the second half for 64% overall. We’re steadily improving at the line. We’ve got guys with good strokes. It’s all confidence and with continued play in the SEC those free throw numbers will keep ascending.

Ky shot 61% in the first half. They were really on fire. Thought they were really good in the first half and many times in the second half. They are still a very talented group. They shot 40 percent in the second half. They only sank four-of-12 threes, but they seemed to come at killer times. Cauley-Stein is awesome offensively. He gave us fits. He scored 20 and had seven boards. Archie Goodwin, their shooting guard, had 16, Ryan Harrow hurt us driving to the hole. He finished with 12. Julius Mays didn’t tear up the nets as he scored only nine points, but he made some plays offensively that really hurt us, including a three late in the game when we had cut the deficit to two. Kyle Wiltjer didn’t do a ton, but made a couple of big shots in the first half and had two blocks. Cauley-Stein had three blocks. The boards weren’t bad. They out-rebounded us 36-30. It was a war out there. I liked our toughness against them. Kevin B got kicked out of the game for leaving the bench during an altercation on the floor along with another one of our players who didn’t play, but I liked our toe-to-toe mentality. We never backed down from them. Kevin S. said KB took two steps out on the floor during the altercation and there was a TV timeout, so really he shouldn’t have been ejected. Kevin S. said we’re not gangsters and it was not a big deal that Kevin did that. The refs seemed to overreact.

Anyway, we’ve got State on Saturday at 1:30 PM ET/12:30 CT on the SEC Network (for those who aren’t getting the other SEC game), and on ESPN3. We’ll play Georgia next Wed  (2-27) at home at 9 PM ET/8 CT on Fox Sports South, then we go to Auburn on Sat, 3-2, for a 9 PM ET/ 8 CT tip on ESPN2. Then we’ll go to Florida (Wed, 3-6, @ 8 PM ET/7 CT on SEC Network) and finish at home against South Carolina (1:30 PM ET/12:30 CT, SEC Network), so there are some winnable games coming up, especially if we can play offense like we did last night and get the defense back to where it was before last night. The SEC tournament is March 13-17 (Wed-Sun) in Nashville at the Bridgestone Arena. You never know what might happen. If we get hot, which we’re capable of, we could make some noise in the conference tourney.

Baseball is rolling after a 10-2 victory over Central Arkansas yesterday at the Hawk. Conrad Gregor was two-for-three with two ribbies. Connor Harrell walked three times, and in his only official plate appearance, doubled down the left field line to knock in a pair of runners. Freshman DH Xavier Turner, who is making a case for the starting job at third base, knocked in a pair with a double. Walker Buehler, a freshman, started  and gave up eight walks, but struck out six and only allowed one run on two hits in four innings. Would like to see Walker get his control down, but he has good talent. Steven Rice came out of the bullpen and pitched terrifically throwing three scoreless innings, giving up only one hit with no walks and 3 K’s. We are now 4-1 with our only loss coming  to Long Beach State last Sunday 13-9.

Tony Kemp is hitting .500 with nine hits in 18 at hats. He’s unbelievable. Xavier is hitting .444 with eight hits in 18 ab’s. Connor is hitting .375 with two long balls and 11 ribbies. We get Connor’s bat hot for the whole season, with the other guys hitting this way, look out SEC. Conrad is hitting .353 and Spence Navin .350. We’re hitting .335 as a team. Only had six errors in five games, not great, but the errors have been committed by some of the younger players. The vets are playing good defense. If we get that weekend rotation of Zo , Beede and T.J. hot, we could do some serious damage this season. Bullpen is solid. We need to develop 2 or 3 midweek starters as well. We have a potentially  awesome-Omaha team. We play Monmouth of New Jersey this weekend. They are 1-0. They beat ‘Nova last weekend, 7-6, but have had the rest of their games cancelled due to weather. Ready for some spring weather and hopefully our baseball and basketball teams will be rolling in March.

Football spring game set for  April 13th, a Saturday, at 2 PM ET/ 1 CT. I imagine CSS will broadcast it. Will let you know when I know more. Very interesting spring coming up with quarterback and other positions. My hunch is that Austyn Carta-Samuels will get the job, but we’ll see. We’ll have three quality qbs in the spring and four in August. The talent is getting better and better every year. Looking at another eight-win season and maybe better.

Brandt not playing this weekend at the Accenture World Golf Championships Match Play tourny in Tucson, so it’s not as fun, but there’s talk B will be back for Doral in a couple of weeks. I know he’s shooting for the Masters for sure, but would love to see him get Doral and Arnie Invitational in before that. Luke not in field either, but should be an exciting match play event. Excellent event as a matter of fact. Most of the top 64 players playing in the event including Tiger, Phil, Keegan Bradley, Luke Donald, all those guys. Should be fun

Kedren said in his postgame interview that his shoulder hurt and was sore, but he was going to play in the second half. “I was having too much fun,”  Kede said. What a team guy and terrific kid.

Nothing new on recruiting yet for ’14. We’ve got two committed and both are high caliber players. K.J. Carta- Samuels, Austyn’s little brother, is a four-star quarterback  out of San Jose, Caly and Jay Robertson, our other commit,  is not rated yet at dtackle, but is rumored to be a four-star when he gets ranked. Jay is out of  MBA in Nashville. Jay is 6’3″, 276. K.J. is 6’3″, 210. Like both of these guys a lot. Excellent start on 2014. Recruiting should even be better next year. Could be a top 10 class on signing day next February. Will keep you posted on any developments. More to come in the next day or so including a preview of basketball and baseball.

Seven guys who can win at Riviera

Tournament: Northern Trust Open

Where: Riviera Country Club, Los Angeles (7,349 yards, Par 71)

Designer: George C. Thomas, Jr. (1926)

Purse: $6.6 million

Winner’s share: $1,188,000

Fed Ex Points: 500

TV coverage: Golf Channel (Today-Friday, 3-6 PM ET/ 2-5 CT; Saturday-Sunday (GC, 1-2:30 PM ET, 12-1:30 CT). CBS (Saturday 3-6 PM ET, 2-5 CT), Sunday (3-6:30 PM ET/ 2-5:30 CT).

Potential winners:

Keegan Bradley:

One of the best in the game. Played pretty well this year and ready to break out. Drives the ball extremely well and is a top 10 putter on the tour. He was in a playoff for the championship here last year. Could be ready to break through. Another major could be coming this year as well.

James Hahn:

Top five two weeks ago at Waste Management and tied third last week at Pebble. Young player who’s got a chance for greatness. It’s highly competitive out there, maybe moreso than ever, but this guy’s got a chance to do some good things if he can stay focused.

Matt Kuchar:

One of the most consistent players on the tour in the last three or four years. Koooch always has a shot with his length, accuracy and his terrific putter. Could see him breaking through this week. Another guy on the verge of winning a major. He’ll certainly be in contention at Augusta. Can’t wait for that.

Chris Kirk:

Second last week at Pebble. Solid game. Ready to break through soon.

Phil:

Was another one of the three players in the playoff last year with Keegan and Bill Haas, the eventual winner. Phil sank a highly clutch birdie putt on 18 to make the playoff. Phil playing very well despite the aberration last week at Pebble Beach, where he wasn’t so good on Saturday and Sunday. His new Calloway RAZR Fit Xtreme driver is really doing him right at present. Phil can definitely win in LA.

Charl Schwartzel:

Finished second last week at the Joburg Open in South Africa on the European Tour. Excellent player. Another major contender this year after having won a green jacket two years ago. Solid all around game. Drives it well, solid approach game and really good putter. Clutch player.

Webb Simpson:

Always like Webb in every tournament he’s in. He’s had a solid year so far and could break through this weekend. Another big time major contender this year. Wow, this major season is going to be awesome.

Key holes:

Par five 1st; 503 yards

Tee sits 70 feet above a narrow fairway flanked by trees on the right and rough and out of bounds on the left. One of the most famous opening holes in golf. Can be a birdie, even an eagle hole. Or it could be a double bogey.

Par-3 4th: 236 yards

Ben Hogan called it “the greatest Par-3 hole in America.” A direct shot goes across a 60-yard long bunker fronting the green or you can draw an approach safely right avoiding the hazard. Par is a good score here.

Par-3 6th: 199 yards

Quite a unique hole with a bunker cut within the putting surface. Bunker sits in back center of the green and divides it into four quadrants with two on the higher left side and two on the lower right. Back left is the toughest pin placement. If it’s back left and you hit it to right side of the green, you have an option of chipping over the bunker (tough shot) or putting around it. Par is another good score here. Birdie is a bonus.

Par-4 10th, 315 yards

Jack Nicklaus called it the greatest par-four in golf. The hole doglegs right. It’s reachable from the tee for some players, but a ball missed slightly right generally results in a bogey or worse. The smart play is a fairway metal down the left side, but the temptation is to go for it. Should be interesting.

Par-4 18th, 475 yards

One of the best finishing holes in golf. The challenge is a semi-blind tee shot to a fairway hidden beyond a steep, Kikuya (kind of grass)-covered hillside. Second shot is a mid iron or long iron to a challenging, drama-filled amphitheater green. Steve Elkington won a memorable PGA here over Colin Montgomery in 1995 in a playoff with heroics on the final hole both in regulation and in the playoff. Should be an epic finishing hole this weekend, particularly Sunday.

Predicted winner:

Keegan

Just think he’s ready to win this year and is primed for another major. At some point he, Webb, Ernie and some others are going to have to figure out what to do about their belly putters with those becoming illegal in 2016. But like his chances to get it done this weekend.

A talk with Corbs

In 10 years at the helm, Vanderbilt baseball coach Tim Corbin has taken his program to unprecedented heights. Corbs has won 410 games, taken his teams to eight NCAA regionals, three Super Regionals and one College World Series appearance in 2011. The talent he’s amassed and developed is evident in the amount of VU ballplayers in the big leagues. We have 35 players in the minor leagues and six in the bigs. David Price, in my opinion and a lot of other people’s, is the premier pitcher in Major League Baseball. Pedro Alvarez is getting better and better at Pittsburgh and is going to be a star slugger, run producer and third baseman for the Bucs for many years. Ryan Flaherty keeps getting better and better for the O’s. According to Corbs, Buck Showalter, the manager of the Orioles, loves Ryan. Mike Baxter has a good chance to be the starting right fielder for the Mets. We have several guys in Triple A, many in double A and quite a few in single A ball. Corbs has built a baseball machine in Nashville. And he’s done it with the highest integrity. He always recruits high caliber kids who want excel not only on the field, but also in the classroom. That’s the essence of athletics at Vanderbilt University. James Franklin and Kevin Stallings are of the same makings. We are very fortunate to have these three exceptional men and coaches.

Corbs daughter, Molly, who has battled some medical issues, is doing well and recovering from a medical scare last year. Our thoughts and prayers are with Corbs, Maggie and Molly for Molly’s full recovery. Corbs has handled this difficult situation like the champ that he is. So have Maggie and Molly.

The 2013 season promises to be thrilling. Our whole outfield is coming back, and Jack Lupo, Connor Harrell and Yaz can play some ball. Both Connor and Yaz chose to come back for their senior seasons instead of matriculating to pro baseball. That says a lot about those guys’ character. Lupo is going to be excellent too and should garner professional interest after this season as will Connor and Yaz. Conrad Gregor was a preseason All-American at first base in one publication. Tony Kemp, the ultimate team player, will be stellar at second base, in the batters box and on the basepaths. Joel McKeithan will man SS and I like Joel. He has a good bat and good defensive skills. We’ll like Joel. Vince Conde comes back for his second year at the hot corner. Expect Vince to have a good year. Spencer Navin should be an All-American catcher at year’s end. He’s terrific defensively and has an excellent run-producing bat. The weekend rotation of T.J. Pecoraro, Kevin Ziomek and Tyler Beede has potential to be one of the best in college baseball. The bullpen may be our biggest strength and that’s saying a lot. Brian and Jared Miller will lead that group.

This year has the makings of a deep run. Corbs knows the hopes are high for a big season, but he’s very measured in his outlook for the season. He’s a great coach; he knows you just want to get better every day. That’s what he tells his team. The season’s a marathon and you want to be peaking on your last lap. That’s what Corbs’ goal is. And he likes what he’s got with this group.

“We’ve got a good attitude; the investment level is high. We have really good senior leadership in Connor, Yaz, Brian Harris and Lupo. They are like assistant coaches on the field. They don’t put themselves up front. We don’t put a lot into expectations. We have a chance to be a good team. We have great kids. We always do here. Kids who are invested in the program.”

Corbs likes his weekend rotation’s prospects.

“We’re solid. We’re capable of pitching well. The guys have good stuff. Pec (T.J.) is completely healthy (from his Tommy John surgery two years ago). Zo was in and out on his confidence last year, but he pitched in the Cape this summer and he’s in good shape mentally. Beede has worked hard too. We’ll be solid there.”

Corbs really likes his bullpen.

“These guys are just as good as our championship team (SEC championship, 2007). Jared Miller is throwing very well. Brian Miller (who has a chance to be our closer) is doing well. Walker Buehler, Steven Rice, Phillip Pfeifer, Adam Ravenelle, all those guys have a chance to be good. It’s a strength of our team.”

Tony Kemp, our table setter at the lead off position, was a terrific left fielder in 2011 and part of 2012. But due to injury issues, Corbs had to move Tony to second. Rather than being down about it, Tony embraced the opportunity and played excellent second base at the end of the season. Tony is a terrific leadoff/contact hitter and base stealer. He brings so much to the team, and his positive personality resonates throughout the locker room.

“He’s always happy,” Corbs said. “Just always has a smile on his face. He brings so much energy. He’s a great kid who plays loose and is a very good competitor. When I told him I wanted to move him to second last year, he said ‘whatever you need , don’t worry about it.’ He’s a total team guy.”

Connor is a guy I’ve always been high on. He can hit, he can hit with power, he can throw, he can run and he  can field. He’s a five-tool player. He had his struggles at times last year after tearing it up at the end of the ’11 season.

“He took some time off in the summer and just got away from baseball which I thought was good,” Corbs said. “He puts a lot of pressure on himself. I think he’s going to have a good year though. He works so hard and has high expectations for himself. He is county strong. When he misses a ball it can go out. He’s a pretty good outfielder too. We’re going to be tough up the middle with Navin (at catcher) and Harrell (in center).”

Corbs feels very good about Conrad at first and likes Joel at short and Vince at third though there are some young guys who will give them some good competition. Young freshmen Dansby Turner and Xavier Turner could make their marks this year at short and third. The outfield is deep, too, with John Norwood and Rhett Wiseman providing good depth and with the potential to start if needed.

Corbs had the number one recruiting classes in the country according to Baseball America in 2012 and 2013. Didn’t ask him about 2014, but I know it’s going well from what I’ve read. He really can’t comment on this year’s recruiting class (the class of ’14 who will be frosh next year), per NCAA rules. The talent keeps pouring into West End.

Corbs said the relationships he’s established with his players are forever. He talked about DP.

“He doesn’t just want to be considered great, he wants to be in the Hall of Fame, “Corbs said of David. “He’s so competitive at everything he does and he’s like a sponge. He remembers everything. He loves Tampa and the team. Just a great, great guy.”

Corbs is keeping it under wraps, but I know he’s excited about his baseball team. Our team will be special but so will Arkansas (three in Baseball America preseason poll), Miss. State (5 in BA poll), South Carolina (7), LSU (9), Kentucky (11), Ole Miss (13) and Florida (17). It’s just an amazing conference. Like SEC football, it’s a colossal challenge in SEC baseball. North Carolina was picked number one by Baseball America, Arkansas third, Louisville fourth and State fifth.

Should be an awesome season. Corbs and company are ready to get it started. Couldn’t think of a better guy to run our program this year and for many years to come. It all gets started tomorrow afternoon at 4 against Long Beach State at “The Hawk.” LBS in for a weekend series. Can’t wait.

VU basketball unplugged; update on Brandt

vs. UT @ home, 8 PM ET/7 CT on ESPN3 and the SEC network in the Nashville area. Big game for us as they all are with UT. Need to get a win streak going. Next two at home with UT tonight and Texas A&M on Saturday (6:30 PM ET/5:30 CT Fox Sports South). The guy to watch for on UT is Jarnell Stokes. He’s a load in the middle at 6’8″, 245-250,  so Hendo and James Siakam, if he gets some time, will have to bring their hard hats and do a lot of work in the paint tonight. Rod will have to be tough in the middle as well and Kevin Bright needs to do his always hard work on the boards. Probably need to double team Stokes and make them shoot it from the outside. They’re not a great shooting team. Need this one. Lost by one to UT in Knoxville a couple of weeks ago. Kede, Kyle, Rod and Dai-Jon will need to be leaders and really bear down on both ends tonight. Tennessee is a very physical team. We need to match their physicality both on the floor and on the boards., we need to play stellar defense, run good offense and outshoot them.

Brandt pulled out of the WGC Accenture Match Play tourney next week due to sore ribs. Hope B isn’t experiencing major problems with the ribs. Had a cracked one last year that kept him out for a while in the middle of the season. Brandt thinking he could be back for Doral in three weeks. Hope that’s the case. Just needs to rest up and work on his short game. He’s on such a roll. Just want him to be totally healed so he can win @ Augusta.
Will have a bonus interview/story on the blog tomorrow which I think you’ll really enjoy. I’ll send out an email in the morning. Take care, DW

Those four Alabama football players, Eddie Williams, D.J. Pettway, Tyler Hayes and Brent Calloway should be kicked off the team ASAP. Three of them beat up a couple of guys or at least one of them and stole their wallets. Second degree burglary for three of them and certainly assault. Williams sounds like the worst of the three, but they’re all culpable. Callaway used what looks to be one of the guy’s credit cards who was assaulted and robbed.  He’s already been charged with second degree possession of pot as a freshman.I don’t think there’s any question Saban should take immediate action and get rid of these bad actors. I don’t care what kind of football players they are; that’s irrelevant in this case. They need to be kicked off the team without any questions. There may be some legal hurdles in this situation that need to be cleared, but once they are, these guys need to go.

My revised Final Four with darkhorses; Sneds rolls

1. Indiana:

Love Victor Oladipo, one of the best athletes and skilled basketball players in the country.

2. Michigan:

Tremendous basketball players. Trey Burke the best point guard in the country along with Shane Larkin of Miami. Glen Robinson III and Tim Hardaway III, like Burke and their fathers, look like NBA players.

3. Syracuse:

That 2-3 zone is impregnable. It’s very tough. Great athletes on the floor. Michael Carter-Williams and C.J. Fair look like NBA players like Oladipo and Burke. Carter-Williams is one of best players in the college game.

4.Miami:

Love this team and their coach Jim Larranaga. Excellent basketball team. 11-0 in the ACC with lopsided wins over Duke and Carolina.

Another possible blue blood in there:

Michigan State:

Tom Izzo always takes his group a long way in March.  This year will be no exception. Big game tomorrow night at home vs. Michigan (9 ET/8 CT on ESPN).

Darkhorses:

Gonzaga and Butler

Both excellent teams. Gonzaga talented and very well coached by Mark Few. Butler just has magic about them. Brad Stevens a top five coach in the country.

Golf thoughts:

Sneds was awesome yesterday in shooting 65 to win the AT&T National Pro-Am at Pebble Beach with a score of -19. He won by three strokes over Chris Kirk from the University of Georgia. Sneds looks to be the best player in golf now that his ball striking is elite. Should be an awesome Masters, and even before that with the World Golf Championships in two weeks in Scottsdale, Az., and Doral and Arnie coming up in March. I’m looking forward to this weekend with the Northern Trust Open at Riviera in LA. Phil, Keegan, Webb, Lee Westwood, Dustin among others playing. Nice field. This year has been electric so far. Going to keep getting better too.

It just keeps getting better

Brandt shoots 65 today to capture the AT&T National Pro-Am at the illustrious Pebble Beach Golf Links. No problem for Brandt today. Came into today tied with James Hahn at -12, and outplayed him, Chris Kirk (from Georgia) and the rest of the field. Brandt drove it so well. He didn’t miss one fairway today. It was an awesome display of golf. Brandt’s approach shots were excellent and his putter is the best in the world. Brandt uses an Odyssey white hot short putter and a Taylor Made burner Superfast TP driver. Both those clubs are working extremely well. Brandt eagled two, and birdied  4,6,7, 10, 11 and a sank a super clutch 12-foot birdie putt on the par-3 17th. B wins an excellent paycheck, cements his first place ranking on the FED Ex Standings–he is 700 points ahead of second place Brian Gay– and he’s now No.4 in the world behind McIlroy, Woods and Luke Donald. I’m guessing Brandt had 28 putts today. PGAtour is not supplying the stats yet for those numbers, but I would bet it was around 28. The putter is always there; it’s just the rest of Brandt’s game that has been superb lately. Nice interview afterwards with David Feherty of CBS. Augusta is not too far away and Brandt will be a serious contender there. He’ll be off this week, which is a good move after his victory–he’s played a lot–then B will play in the World Golf Championship Accenture Match Play tournament in Arizona in two weeks.Top 64 players in the world in that field.  Just gotta keep fine tunin’. Some awesome tournaments coming up in Florida with the World Golf Championships tourney at Doral and the Arnie Invitiational two weeks before Augusta. The skies the limit for Brandt this year. He’s honed in on winning majors. I see it happening. Mandy, Lilly and young Austin were there to greet Brandt on the green. Nice looking family. Very exciting stuff.

Bball team with a very nice victory over Arkansas yesterday, 67-49. Defense was fantastic. Held Hogs to 31 percent shooting for the game and 33 percent from three. We shot 50 percent from the field for the game, sank nine trifectas (Sheldon and Kede with three apiece) and shot 69.6% from the line. Much better. We just keep getting better from the charity stripe. Nine-of-10 in the first half and 7-of-13 in the second half (16-of-23 overall). Rod was five-of-six from the line, Kevin Bright was five-of-six and Sheldon was four-of-four. Rod led the team with 15 points, Sheldon had 13 and Josh Henderson played an awesome game scoring 11, pulling down four boards and blocking three shots. Good to see Hendo play well. He’s getting better and better. Would really help us the rest of this month if Hendo can play like that. Outrebounded them 35-30. Kevin Bright, with seven boards, led the team. We’re getting much better on the boards and at the line; we’ve shot it pretty well lately and have played very good defense all year. I like where we’re at. We’ve lost some tough ones prior to yesterday, but it looks to me like we’re coming together. Kevin S. was very pleased with the team’s effort. Held big time scorer and big time player Marshawn Powell to just five points. Powell also fouled out. He beat us up pretty good at Fayetteville earlier this year. Just a real positive day for the team.

Play UT on Wednesday at home with an 8 PM ET/7 CT tipoff. ESPN3 will air the game. SEC Network will carry the game in some areas. Believe in these guys.

Wow, stayed up last night to watch the 5 OT game, Notre Dame 104-101 victory over Louisville. Notre Dame played their hearts out with three of their starters fouled out by the first overtime. It was an awesome effort by the Irish. They’ve got class kids and a class coach in Mike Brey. Just kept it fun for his team during all the stress of the game. Really like that group and their coach. I think Rick Pitino is fed up with his group, at least a couple of them. I thought for sure earlier in the week that the ‘Ville was a late March possibly early April team, but I’m not so sure now. Pitino has a couple of knuckleheads on his team. This should be an awesome month for both watching our team and watching college basketball throughout the country. A lot of good teams. Great team candidates are Indiana, Michigan, Syracuse and Miami. Could see a Butler or Gonzaga getting into the Final Four. Like the Butler team a lot. They’ve got greatness. Gonzage could be great also.

Finally, former VU assistant Dan Muller led his Illinois State team to a huge victory over No.16 Creighton last night at Creighton. Dan can coach. His team is getting better and better and may make the big tournament if they can keep it up.

John Jenkins playing well for the Hawks. Jeff Taylor and Festus are contributors. Will start keeping tabs on those guys and keep you posted.
