Bowl games: New Year’s Eve games along with predictions

Bowl Record: 11-8; Overall: 138-44 (76%)

Today, Dec.31

 Music City Bowl

Vandy (8-4) vs. NC State (7-5)

Where: LP Field (67,000), Nashville

Time: Noon ET/ 11 AM CT

Network: ESPN

Announcers: Carter Blackburn, Rod Gilmore & Jamele Hill

Refs: MAC Conference

Line: Vandy by 7

Vandy is going to rely on the running of Zac Stacy (1,034 yards, 9 TDs), and his backups Wesley Tate and Brian Kimbrow along with the big play ability of qb Jordan Rodgers (175-294, 2,431 yards, 13 TDs, 5 ints) and superb wideouts Jordan Matthews (87-1,262, 7 TDs) and Chris Boyd (46-756, 4 TDs). The Vandy defense is 15th in scoring defense in the country and 10th in passing defense. Linebacker Chase Garnham (40 tackles, six sacks), dbs Kenny Ladler, Trey Wilson and Andre Hal and defensive tackle Rob Lohr anchor the defense. State is led by quarterback Mike Glennon, who has completed 58 percent of his passes (295-of-511), with 30 TDs and 14 ints. Shadrach Thornton, a redshirt freshman, leads the running game with 655 yards (4.6 per carry) and three TDs. Three wide receivers have caught over 40 passes: Quintin Payton (48-761, 2 TDs), Tobias Palmer (46-670, 6 TDs) and Bryan Underwood (43-615, 10 TDs) are all three outstanding. The State defense is led in tackles by safety Earl Wolff who has 11o on the season along with four tackles for loss and two ints. Safety Brandan Bishop has accounted for 99 tackles and three ints. David Amerson is a terrific corner with five ints on the season and defensive end Darryl Cato-Bishop has 10 tackles for loss of 58 yards and 6.5 sacks.

Good matchup here. State fired Tom O’Brien, who I thought was a pretty good coach, and hired Dave Doeren from Northern Illinois. Offensive coordinator Dana Bible will coach the team today. State beat Florida State earlier this year, 17-16, but lost to Tennessee, 35-21, to open the season. They also have losses to North Carolina, Virginia, Miami and Clemson. Vandy has won six in a row and James Franklin has his program believing they can be something special in the coming years. This team has had a nice season and defeated UT, 41-18. I like Stacy, JRodg, Matthews and Boyd to have big games, and while NC State will score some points, the Vandy offense will be the key to victory, but in a pretty close game.

Vandy 31, NC State 27

Sun Bowl

Georgia Tech (6-7) vs. USC (7-5)

Where: Sun Bowl Stadium (51,500), El Paso, Texas

Time: 2 PM ET/1 CT

Network: CBS

Announcers: Verne, Gary, Wolf

Refs: Big Ten

Line: USC by 7 1/2

I kind of like Tech to pull the upset  off. USC has been pretty dysfunctional lately and quarterback Matt Barkley is with and injured shoulder. I think Georgia Tech wants this more. Going with the Ramblin’ Wreck.

Tech 31, ‘SC 27

Liberty Bowl

Tulsa (10-3) vs. Iowa State (6-6)

Where: Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium (61,108), Memphis

Time: 3:30 PM ET/ 2:30 CT

Network: ESPN

Announcers: Mark Jones, Brock Huard and Jessica Mendoza

Refs: Mountain West

Line: Iowa State by 1 1/2

I like this Tulsa team. Any team that can beat Central Florida and stud quarterback Blake Bortles is a pretty good team to me. Tulsa did it in overtime in the C-USA championship. Bortles was awesome in the Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Bowl against Ball State. He’s just a sophomore and he looks NFL ready to me. Passed for 270 and ran for 80 in that game in a convincing UCF’ W. He was dominant. Tulsa beat him, so they’re for real. But Iowa State plays hard under Paul Rhoades. They’re a solid football team under a solid football coach. Like Tulsa to get it done though

Tulsa 31, Iowa State 28

Chick-fil-A Bowl

Clemson (10-2) vs. LSU (10-2)

Where: Georgia Dome (71,228), Atlanta

Time: 7:30 PM ET/6:30 CT

Network: ESPN

Announcers: Mike Patrick, Ed Cunningham and Jeannine Edwards

Refs: Big Ten

Line: LSU by 6

This should be a very entertaining game. It’ll be an explosive Clemson offense against a top notch SEC defense. QB Taj Boyd, rb Andre Ellington and wideouts Sammy Watkins and DeAndre Hopkins will try to light up the scoreboard, while LSU defense led by linebacker Kevin Minter, safety Eric Reed and defensive end Sam Montgomery will try to neutralize the explosive Clemson attack. Look for LSU qb Zach Mettenberger to have a good night against the Clemson defense, which can be a little leaky. Running back Jeremy Hill should have a big game on the ground for the Bengal Tigers as well. Like the Hat to get it done over Dabo. The SEC defense will do enough and Mettenberger, Hill and company will do some damage offensively.

LSU 35, Clemson 27

NFL

I’ve made up my mind on the NFL MVP. Adrian Peterson rushed for 2,097 yards for the season which was punctuated by his 199-yard performance in the Vikings’ playoff clinching 37-34 victory over the Pack. He was 507 yards clear of the second leading rusher in the NFL, Marshawn Lynch (1,590), and nine yards short of breaking Eric Dickerson’s all time single season rushing record. Peyton Manning completed 337-of-554 balls (68.2%) for 4,355 yards, 34 TDs and 11 ints for the season. While Peyton’s numbers are off the charts and he led his team to the No.1 seed in the AFC and home field advantage throughout the playoffs, AP’s season was historic. Peyton was only the seventh leading passer in the league. AP led his team to the playoffs in a Herculean effort, so I’m going with AP for MVP. Peyton deserves comeback player of the year without a doubt, but I’ll take AP for MVP. Wow, that was a heckuva game between the Vikes and the Packers with the Vikings winning on a field goal as time expired. Well played game by both sides. The playoffs are going to be fantastic. Here are the wild card matchups:

Saturday, January 5, 2013

Cincinnati Bengals (10-6) @ Houston Texans (12-4)

Time: 4:30 PM ET/3:30 CT

Network: NBC

Minnesota Vikings (10-6) @ Green Bay Packers (11-5)

Time: 8 PM ET/7 CT

Network: NBC

Sunday, Jan.6, 2013

Indianapolis Colts (11-5) @ Baltimore Ravens (10-6)

Time: 1 PM ET/Noon CT

Network: CBS

Seattle Seahawks (11-5) @ Washington Redskins (10-6)

Time: 4:30 PM ET/3:30 CT

Network: FOX

I’m looking forward to all these matchups, but I love the Russell Wilson vs RGIII matchup in D.C. on Sunday at 4:30 ET/3:30 CT. Wow. That’s huge. Will have analysis and predictions on Friday and throughout the playoffs.

Tomorrow morning I’ll have my New Year’s Day bowls analysis and predictions. Happy New Year.

Exciting day in the National Football League

There are some very important playoff implication games today in the league. Can Chicago, Minnesota, Washington or Dallas make it in? The Giants still have a shot though they need a lot of help to get in. Here’s what can happen: If Chicago wins and Minnesota loses to Green Bay, Chicago is in as the sixth seed. If Chicago and the Vikings win, the Vikings are in. If the Vikings and Bears lose and Washington loses to Dallas, the Cowboys would win the division and  the Giants amazingly would be in. Denver and Peyton are playing for home field, as are the Texans and the Patriots. If Denver beats KC, they secure the second seed if the Texans beat Indy. But if Denver wins and the Texans lose, Denver is the No.1 seed and secures home field advantage throughout the playoffs. If Denver and the Texans lose and the Patriots win, the Pats secure the No.1 seed and the home field advantage through the playoffs. It’s pretty wild. Another interesting scenario is the MVP and the comeback player of the year awards. It’s between Adrian Peterson and Peyton. I was with Peyton for a long time and I still am with him for comeback player of the year. Anybody who can go through four neck surgeries, comeback and have the kind of season he’s having (more than 30  TDs and seven or eight ints) leading his team to the playoffs and maybe home field advantage, to me, that’s pretty amazing. I’ve been leaning towards AP for the MVP lately, but I want these last games to play out  to see whom I will choose. I’ll let you know this afternoon after the games have been played. If AP breaks the rushing record of 2,105 set by Eric Dickerson (he needs 160+ yards), and the Vikings win, AP is the man. If AP comes up short and the Vikings lose and Peyton gets it done (which he probably will against KC), I’m going with Peyton. If AP breaks the record and the Vikings lose, and Peyton has a good game, I’m going with Peyton. To me the Vikings need to win and Peterson needs to have a good game. If he does, if they do and he does, AP is my pick.  I’ll let you know after the games.

On to this weeks picks.

Record: 5-8

Baltimore Ravens ()10-5) @ Cincy Bengals (9-6)

Where: Paul Brown Stadium (65,535), Cincinnati

Time: 1 PM ET/Noon CT

Network: CBS

Announcers: Kevin Harlan, Soloman Wilcox

Line: Bengals by 1

Should be a really good game here. Like the way the Bengals are playing and the Ravens were very impressive last week in beating the Giants soundly. Like the Bengals to get through this one at home. If the Bengals win, they could get the home field in the first round. Same for the Ravens. So this game has significance. This has a good chance to be a first round playoff game next week. Can’t wait for the playoffs.

Bengals 24, Ravens 21

Chicago Bears (9-6) @ Detroit Lions (4-11)

Where: Ford Field (65,000), Motown

Time: 1 PM ET/Noon CT

Network: Fox

Announcers: Kenny Albert, Darryl Johnston and Goose (Tony Siragusa)

Line: Bears by 3

This is a tough game for the Bears. They must win and the Vikings have to lose to the Packers for the Bears to make it in as the sixth seed. Jay Cutler has to get time from his line, Matt Forte, who sprained his ankle last week but will play, has to run it well, and Cutler has to find other receivers besides Brandon Marshall so it can open the offense up some. Earl Bennett and Alshon Jeffery are very good players. Cutler needs to look for them. Think the offense of the Bears will do enough and their defense will hold down Matthew Stafford and Megatron (Calvin Johnson) enough to give themselves a chance to make the playoffs.

Bears 28, Lions 24

Houston Texans (12-3) @Indianapolis Colts (10-5)

Where: Lucas Oil Stadium (70,000), Indy

Time: 1 ET/ Noon CT

Network: CBS

Announcers: Greg Gumbel, Dan Dierdorf

Line: Texans by 7

I’m a believer in this Indy group. Andrew Luck has been pretty darn good, and they play with a lot of passion. Chuck Pagano is back in one of the best stories of the year, as he has returned from cancer, and will be leading his team today. Bruce Arians did a terrific job running the team in Pagano’s absence and Pagano made a beautiful, passionate speech to his team earlier in the season after his team won a big game. This is a great story. I wasn’t big on the Colts after Jim Irsay let Peyton go, but I like this story and I like these Colts. Houston, to me, is kind of fading. I don’t think they’re on the Patriots or Broncos level. Frankly, Indy could be better. I like the Colts to get it done today for Pagano and for their playoff posturing.

Colts 31, Texans 27

Carolina Panthers (6-9) @ New Orleans Saints (7-8)

Where: The Mercedes-Benz Superdome (72,003), N’Awlins

Time: 1 ET/ Noon CT

Network: Fox

Announcers: Mike Martz, Krista Voda

Line: Saints by 5

The Saints finally had a good week this week. They beat the Cowboys at Dallas last Sunday in overtime, and Sean Payton, their phenomenal coach who has been suspended this season due to Bountygate, signed a five-year extension, for $8m/per. Things are on the up and up for the Saints. They aren’t going to make the playoffs, but they should have high hopes for next year. Drew Brees will play with a purpose today. Cam has been playing phenomenally the past three weeks and I think he’ll do well against the Saints again today. The Saints defense is a little leaky and their secondary is suspect. But the Saints are pumped about Payton coming back and they will outscore the Panthers and Cam in what should be a stellar offensive game. Mark Ingram is starting to run well. Ingram is a tremendous player. He’s going to start asserting himself today and next year.

Saints 38, Panthers 35

Green Bay Packers (11-4) @ Minnesota Vikings (9-6)

Where: Vikings Stadium (Metrodome, 73,000), Minneapolis

Time: 4:25 ET/3:25 CT

Network: Fox

Announcers: Joe Buck, Troy Aikman and Pam Oliver

Line: Packers by 3

Huge game for both teams, though more important to Minnesota as they have to win to make the playoffs.  They Vikes will know the verdict of the Chicago game once they get started. If the Bears lose and the Vikings lose and the Cowboys beat the Redskins, the Vikings are out of luck. The Vikings must win, period. Packers looking for a first round bye. The Falcons have secured the No.1 seed and home field throughout the playoffs, but the Packers would love to have that first round bye and home field in the second round. And depending on how the Falcons do, possibly home field in the championship game if they can win their first playoff game. They need to win also. It’s pretty important to them. This should be a classic with AP going for Dickerson’s record and ARodg and company trying to dissect the Vikings D led by the ferocious Jared Allen. Like ARodg to get it done even though Randall Cobb, who has been awesome for the Pack this year, may be out. It’s going to be a terrific game and the Vikings could win. But I’ll go with the Pack.

Discount Double Check 31, Vikes 30

Dallas Cowboys (8-7) @ Washington Redskins  (9-6)

Where: FedEx Field (85,000), D.C.

Time: 8:20 PM ET/7:20 CT

Network: NBC

Announcers: Al, Cris and Michelle

Line: Skins by 3

What a classic way to wrap up Sunday Night football. This is a lot of times my favorite game of the day, because it’s always a great matchup and Cris Collinsworth is a fantastic color analyst. And the rivalry doesn’t get any bigger than this one. And the implications? Just making the playoffs for both teams. I love the way RGIII has played this year. He’s been phenomenal. Dallas has hung in there, and Tony Romo has had a good year. Can the Cowboys pull off the upset? I believe they’re going to give it a Herculean effort, but I’m going with RGIII in this one. The guy is just special. I didn’t love how he said he had won the Heisman before he did win it last year, but I like him overall. He’s going to be a heckuva player for many years to come in this league if he can stay healthy. The Redskins could be a threat in the playoffs if they pull it off tonight. Romo will give it a terrific go, but gotta go with the Skins at home to take the NFC East and move on to the postseason. Should be fun.

‘Skins 31, Cowboys 27

Seahawks 34, Rams 27

Patriots 37, Dolphins 27

Broncos 31, Chiefs 7

Giants 27, Eagles 24

Kedren, Kyle and company will have to be very good tonight; Getting pumped for MCB

Will have a full breakdown of MCB on the blog tomorrow with a prediction. Watched video of practice yesterday. The guys look like they’re having a blast and really getting after it. James said yesterday to the media that he thought some of our guys last year were just content to get to a bowl game, and Cincinnati, last year’s opponent, had been in big games before like the Sugar Bowl in 2010, and knew how to play in those big stage games. This year we’ve got experience and we look hungry for a W. There was a rib eating contest yesterday and James used some of the younger guys because he didn’t want the older guys carrying five extra pounds of ribs going into the game. Guys like Adam Butler and some of the younger linemen competed and James used 162 pound Brandon Banks as his “secret weapon.” State prevailed, but Butler protested there was some foul play on State’s part as one of their competitors was just pulling the meat off the rib instead of eating it. I think we need to appeal this to the SEC and to the NCAA to get the State victory vacated.

Anyway, the players looked great in practice. JMatthews was running excellent routes and catching everything thrown his way. Jordan’s not lightning fast, but very quick, runs his routes perfectly, and just has a knack for the big play. Wow, the future is unlimited for Jordan. The line was going hard in drills, crushing the dummies. There was some pretty good hitting going on. These guys are just having fun playing football. They love it. Very excited for Monday at noon ET/11 CT on ESPN. State has a pretty good quarterback in Mike Glennon. Will get into more detail on them tomorrow.

An interesting recruiting note; Mitch Parsons, a four-star tight end by Rivals and an 89 three-star by 247 sports (highest three-star) has narrowed his choices down to us and Ole Miss. He’s coming to visit Jan. 18, which is a huge recruiting weekend for us with all the commits and some key prospects on campus. Parsons is 6’4″, 235. A player. We’ve got probably two spots left, but I understand that commit Malik Foreman is thinking about switching to UT, so that may open up another spot if Malik decommits. Hopefully, he won’t. But we’ve got Parsons and possibly L3. L3 will announce at the Under Armour All-State game next Friday, Jan.4. Believe that game is being televised by ESPN. L3 really likes the music program at USC. He is into music and wants a good program. Of course, we have Blair School of Music, so that’s a good option too. I’m sure James and the coaches are doing everything they can to get L3 to Nashville. Friday will be huge.

Tonight’s game against Butler is at 8 PM ET/7CT on The U (ESPNU). A victory would be season-changing in my opinion. Butler has our old nemesis Rotnei Clarke, who single handedly beat us in Nashville two years ago scoring 36 points sinking six-of-eight trifectas when he was the point guard for Arkansas. He transferred to Butler when John Pelphrey was fired and now he’s in his first season at Butler and playing very well. I was at the Arkansas game with my girls, and every time he put the shot up I just thought to myself “Please not again.” Sure enough he would drain it. He’s having a good year for the Bulldogs averaging 17 and shooing 45 percent from trifecta. They’re a pretty good rebounding team averaging 36 per game, while we pull down around 31 per game. We’ve got to get good work in the middle. I know I say that every time, but it’s critical every game. Josh Henderson, Rod Odom, James Siakam and Shelby Moates have got to give us good minutes on both ends. Butler has beaten Indiana, 88-86 in overtime, in what was so far the best game of the season. The Hoosiers were the number one team in the country at the time and have a good shot of being a Final Four team, so we know Butler is for real. They’ve also beaten North Carolina (which is young and starting to get it together with all those four and five star youngsters), and Marquette, but have lost to Illinois and Xavier at Xavier, whom we beat in overtime. Kyle, Kede and Kevin Bright will have to be on from trifecta and play lockdown on the defensive end and Rod needs to knock down some threes and penetrate the middle scoring there. I would like to see Sheldon Jeter get some more minutes. Sheldon is 6’7″, very athletic, and can shoot the three. He sinks a three every time he gets in a game. I think Sheldon, a freshman, is going to be a player for us. We just need to play him more.

It’s going to be a tough game, but I still think this team is capable of having a good season. A victory tonight would be a springboard for that. I know the guys will be amped up and ready to play. They always play hard. Oh yeah, Dai-Jon should be even better this week. If Dai-Jon can give us some shooting to go along with his usual stellar defense, that could really help. Dai-Jon has looked to me like he’s still getting into playing form. Tonight may be when the light really clicks on and he’ll have a nice game for us.

Huge tonight. Will have full recap tomorrow. And of course, MCB  coverage will be front and center tomorrow. Let’s get it done tonight.

Today’s bowls’ analysis and predictions

Just some quick thoughts from last night’s Little Caesar’s Bowl and then we’ll move on to today’s action. Western Kentucky interim Coach Lance Guidry decided to roll the dice and go for it on fourth and two at the Central Michigan 19 with his team down 24-21 with 51 seconds left in the game instead of kicking a 36-yard field goal which would have tied the  game at the end of regulation and sent it into overtime. I didn’t mind Guidry going for it really, but I thought the play call was not too swift. Instead of just throwing a five-yard slant or just a button hook for five yards, quarterback Kawaun Jakes threw it 15 yards to tight end Jack Doyle, who played an excellent game, but couldn’t corral the pass ball as it fell just out of his reach. Guidry’s kicker, Garrett Schwettman, was one-for-three from 30-39 yards on the season. He was eight-for-eight from 20-29, so it was a tough call. I kind of like him going for it. Ball Coach always does that. He’d go for the win. Of course, he has Connor Shaw, Ace Sanders and Bruce Ellington playing for him among others on his offense. These guys are pretty good players, but not NFL players like Sanders and Ellington are. I just thought if you’re going to go for it, throw a shorter pass, get the first down, then get serious about getting it into the end zone. Complete it and keep the drive going. Maybe Jakes made the wrong read. But Doyle was the team’s top receiver, so he was probably the primary target. He was triple covered. Felt bad for Guidry. I liked his aggressiveness, just didn’t love the play call.
There was major laundry thrown by  the ACC ref crew in the first two series last night. The David Epperley crew threw more laundry than the Aladdin Cleaners’ staff threw in their hoppers all day yesterday. It was a little bit obnoxious. But the teams settled in and so did the officials. It was a pretty fun game.

Here is a look at today’s contests. The Military Bowl has started but I have not looked at the score before I made this prediction.

Bowl Record: 5-3; Overall: 132-39

Military Bowl

Teams: Bowling Green (8-4) vs. San Jose State (10-2)

Where: RFK Stadium (46,000), Washington, DC

Time: 3 PM ET/2 CT today

Weather: 40 degrees, cloudy, 2o mph winds

Network: ESPN

Broadcast team: Bob Wischusen, Danny Kannell and Quint Kessenich

Line: San Jose State by 7 1/2

Analysis: San Jose State has a good football team. In their first game of the season, they lost just 20-17 to Stanford, and have beaten San Diego State ( 38-34), BYU (20-14) and La Tech (52-43). San Diego State just played in the Poinsettia Bowl against BYU (losing to BYU, 23-6) and La Tech finished 9-3, but didn’t make a bowl game. Are you kiddin’ me? La Tech should be in a bowl. That’s a travesty.

The Spartans have a high flying offense led by quarterback David Fales, who has completed 294-of-408 passes (72%), for 3,798 yards, 31 TDs and nine ints. Wide receiver Noel Grigsby leads the team with 73 receptions for 1,173 yards and nine TDs. Wide receiver Chandler Jones has 48 for 618 yards and 10 TDs. Running back De’Leon Eskridge has rushed for 992 yards and 10 TDs. They’ve got some pretty impressive numbers on defense as well though they’ve given up quite a few points in some games. Defensive end Travis Johnson has 19 tackles for losses of 106 yards and 12 sacks for 66 yards. Defensive tackle Travis Racili has 12 tackles for 41 yards lost and 7.5 sacks for 33 yards. Cornerback Bene Benwikere has seven ints.Bowling Green lost to Florida 27-14, pretty respectable, then lost to Va. Tech, 37-0, and the week before that lost to Toledo, 27-15. They have beaten some MAC teams, but nobody real impressive. But they have some good players. Running back Anthon Samuel has rushed for 966 and 10 TDs. Quarterback Matt Shilz has completed 212-of-378 (56.1%) passes with 14 TDs and 12 ints. Not real impressive numbers, but he has been effective at times. Defensive tackle Chris Jones has 19 tackles for losses of 100 yards and 12.5 sacks for 84 yards. Linebacker Gabe Martin has 8.5 tackles for loss of 46 yards and 4.5 sacks of 33 yards. Cornerback Jude Adjei-Barimah has four ints on the season.

The wind is blowing 20 mph, so that’s going to take away from the passing game some. I expect a good game, but I like the Spartans under interim coach Mike Caragher to get the job done. Their former coach, Mike McIntyre left for Colorado.

San Jose State 28, Bowling Green 20

Two other bowls:

Belk Bowl

Teams: Duke (6-6) vs. Cincinnati (9-3)

Where: Bank of America Stadium (73,298),Charlotte, NC.

Time: 6:30 PM ET/5:30 CT

Network: ESPN

Broadcasters: Mike Patrick, Ed Cunningham and Jeannine Edwards

Weather: 51 degrees, mostly sunny, wind at 5 mph

Line: Cincy by 8

Cincy lost Butch Jones to Tennessee so they’re also going with an interim also. The interim before Tubby takes over is Steve Stripling. This has to be the year of the interims. Still like the Bearcats to get it done over Duke. David Cutcliffe trying to build a winner at Duke. He’s getting closer.Hopefully Coach Cutcliffe  can get it done at Duke. Very good coach and an awesome person.

Bearcats 42, Blue Devils 31

Holiday Bowl

Teams: UCLA (9-4) vs. Baylor (7-5)

Where: Qualcomm Stadium (71,.294), San Diego

Time: 9:45 PM ET/8:45 CT

Network: ESPN

Broadcasters: Dave Pasch, Brian Griese and Jenn Brown

Weather: 55 degrees, clear, wind at 4 mph

Line: UCLA by 3

Analysis: I’m a believer in Art Briles and what he does at Baylor. He’s an outstanding coach. UCLA is a good team, but Baylor beating Kansas State handily at home, made me a believer in Briles and his football program. After losing RGIII and many other good players last year, he came back and had a pretty decent season. Beating KState had to make the season. A bowl win would cap it off.

Baylor 37, UCLA 34

Tonight’s Little Caesar’s PIzza Bowl Pick

Bowl Record: 5-2; Overall: 132-38

Western Kentucky (7-5)  vs. Central Michigan (6-6)

Where: Ford Field (66,00), Detroit

Time: 7:30 PM ET/ 6:30 CT

TV: ESPN

Broadasters: Mark Neely (play-by-play), Ray Bentley (color commentator), Jamele Hill (sideline reporter)

LIne: WKU by 6

Players to watch: For Western Ketucky, it’s running back Antonio Andrews (6″0″,211). Andrews has rushed for 1,609 yards and 11 TDs, along with catching 34 passes for 411 yards and three TDs. On the other side, Central Michigan counters with running back Zurion Tipton (6’1″219), who has rushed for 1,396 yards and 19 touchdowns and caught 22 passes for 258.

Breakdown: Western Kentucky defeated Kentucky this season and were relatively competitive with Alabama though they did kind of limp home. Central Michigan defeated Iowa but had to scratch and claw to make a bowl, winning their last three over some pretty weak teams. Like Andrews to have a big game and the Hilltoppers’ defense should be better than the Chippewas’, which has struggled this season.

Sean Dowling is commit #22

Sean is a 6’6″, 270 pound offensive tackle out of Fallbrook, California. Watched film on Sean and was highly impressed. He buries people, has a high motor and  a real good mean streak to him. Likes to put people down and keep’em down. Very good pass blocker. Nobody gets by him. Didn’t see enough run blocking film, but he’s athletic and should be able to do that just as well.

Sean had committed to UCLA a while ago, but he decommitted on Dec.14 and committed to us today. Sean is a 5.7, three-star by Rivals, a high three-star by 247 (87 grade; 90 is a four-star) and a three-star by Scout (they don’t put grades on their players). Sean had offers from Arizona and Cal among others and USC and Stanford were showing a great deal of interest. He will be an early enrollee along with four-star qb commit Johnathan McCrary, meaning he’ll come in in January and participate in spring practice. Sean said the coaches told him they want him at tackle, but he is willing to play guard or center, wherever the team needs him. He really likes the education we offer, he loves our coaching staff, calls them the best in the country, and sees the ability to win championships in this program. He’s a highly confident, solid young man He said in his interview a while back, after he committed to UCLA, he wanted to talk to his dad after he came home from the Middle East about other options, so I’m assuming his dad is in the military. Looks like a real nice pickup here. We now have two offensive line recruits after offensive tackle Delando Crooks committed to us last Sunday. Come on L3. We’ve got a shot. He will announce at the Under-Armour High School  All-Star game on Friday, Jan.4.

That was a tough one last night for the team losing 56-52 to Middle Tennessee State. I wasn’t going to write anything because it was so frustrating, but decided to listen to Kevin’s postgame and got some encouragement from that. We’re learning how to win. We have good talent, just inexperienced in games and particularly in clutch situations. Sometimes you learn by coming up short in these games unfortunately. Hopefully we’ll grow from this one. MTSU is a pretty legit team. Looks like a tourney team to me. A lot of juniors and seniors who knew what they are doing in the clutch. We struggled in the clutch. Got to get better in crunch time. We’re now 5-5. Butler next Saturday Night at Memorial. 8 PM ET/7CT on ESPNU.

Last night’s disaster for Ball State at the hands of UCF; todays bowls, NFL

I’ve learned one thing now about picking the bowls and it was a good lesson last night; don’t pick MAC teams. Thought Ball State might pull off an upset last night, but they looked more like a junior high team playing an FBS team. Central Florida was good. Their quarterback, Blake Bortles, was fantastic, going 22-of-33 for 272 yards and three TDs and also rushing for 80 more yards and a TD. He just dominated a Swiss Cheese Ball State defense. UCF finished 10-4 on the season, while Ball State, which finished 6-2 in the MAC– the conference of BCS buster Northern Illinois (Orange Bowl vs. FSU)– looked totally out of its league.

Northern Illinois is going to go into Miami New Year’s Night and get manhandled by Florida State. Kent State, which lost in the MAC championship game to Northern Illinois, will play Arkansas State in the GoDaddy.com bowl in Mobile, Sunday, Jan.6, and both teams have new coaches, though the assistants will lead them, so the MAC may have a chance that night. Ohio will lose to La Monroe in the Independence Bowl on Dec. 28. That game last night doesn’t bode well for Northern Illinois’ chances in the Orange Bowl.

Bowl Record: 3-1; Overall: 130-37 (78%)

Here’s a look at today’s games:

R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl

La-Lafayette (8-4) vs. East Carolina (7-5)

Where: Mercedes-Benz Superdome, N’Awlins, (72,003)

Time: Noon  ET/ 11 AM CT

Network: ESPN

Broadcast team: Beth Mowins, Joey Galloway and Quint Kessenich

Line: La Lafayette by 5 1/2

The Ragin’ Cajuns took Florida to the wire on Nov.10, losing 27-20 in the Swamp. That shows me a lot. They beat San Diego State in this same bowl last year, 32-30. I really like the Cajuns’ head coach, Mark Hudspeth. He took North Alabama to the national semifinals in Division II three or four times, and he has it going at La Lafayette. Look for quarterback Terrence Broadway (2526 passing yards, 65.7%, 16 TDs, 8 ints) to have a big game. Linebacker Justin Anderson has 101 tackles on the season, eight for loss. East Carolina is led by running back Vintavious Cooper, who has rushed for 1,030 yards and seven TDs this season. Like the Ragin’ Cajuns to take care of business here and Hudspeth’s name to be very interesting in 2013.

Ragin’ Cajuns 42, East Carolina 30

Maaco Bowl

Boise State (10-2) vs. Washington (7-5)

Where: Las Vegas, Sam Boyd Stadium (home of UNLV Rebels, 36,800)

When: 3:30 PM ET/ 2:30 CT

Network: ESPN

Broadcast team: Brent Musberger, Kirk (Northern Illinois? Are you kiddin’ me?) Herbstreit and Tom Rinaldi

Line: Boise State by 5 1/2

I just like Boise State in big games. D.J. Harper is an excellent back and looks to go in the first or second round of the April draft. He has run for 1,065 yards and 15 scores. He’s got terrific speed and is always a  threat to break it when he gets through the first line of defense. Quarterback Joe Southwick has improved throughout the season. He is 222-of-333 (66.7%) for 2,466 yards, 17 TDs and 7 ints. The Broncos leading receiver is Matt Miller with 60 catches for 679 yards and five TDs. Linebacker J.C. Percy leads the defense with 101 tackles, and defensive end Demarcus Lawrence has 9.5 sacks on the season. For Washington quarterback Keith Price is not having the year he had last year. LSU really dominated him and the Huskies offense earlier this season, 41-3, but he’s been improving since then. Price is 243-of-393 (62%), for 2,484 yards with 18 TDs and 11 ints. Bishop Sankey leads the team in rushing with 1,234 yards and 15 TDs. Wide receiver Kasen Williams has 71 catches for 783 yards and six TDs, and Jenkins Seferian has caught 63 passes for 789 yards and six scores. The Huskies defense is led by linebacker John Timu who has 76 tackles on the season and two ints. Defensive ends Andrew Hudson and Josh Shirley have 6.5 sacks apiece.

But I like Chris Peterson and Boise State in big games on the big stage. They just know how to get it done. The Boise State defense is good and better than the Huskies and Harper will have a big day clearing 100. Boise State will finish with another very successful season at 11-2. I think they’re primed for a big 2013. They’ve got some young guys who will get better and be players next year. It’ll start today.

NFL picks: Last week 3-4

Atlanta Falcons (12-2) @ Detroit Lions (4-10)

8:30 PM ET/ 7:30 CT

ESPN

Line: Falcons by 3 1/2

Like the way the Falcons shellacked the Giants last week. Matt Ryan, Roddy White, Julio and Tony Gonzales will shred the Lions’ defense. Calvin Johnson having a huge year, but Lions can’t keep up with Falcons.

Falcons 38, Lions 27

Minnesota Vikings (8-6) @ Houston Texans (12-2)

1 ET/noon CT

FOX

Line: Houston by 9

The Texans’ goal is to stop Adrian Peterson, who is trying to break the single season rushing record of 2,105 set by Eric Dickerson in 1984. But Jim Brown, one of the greatest running backs of all time, a Hall of Famer, says the Dickerson record is a sham because it was accomplished in 16 games and O.J. Simpson broke 2,000 in 14 games in 1973, which Brown says should be the real record. I think that’s a pretty valid argument. But Peterson has 1,812 on the season and needs 294 to break the record. That’s 147 per game. I say he doesn’t go over 100 tomorrow and will fall short of the record after next week. The Texans will neutralize Peterson and make the erratic Christian Pnnder try to beat them. He won’t get it done.

Texans 35, Vikings 24

Saints (6-8) @ Cowboys (8-6)

Time: 1 ET/noon CT

Where: Jerry’s World

Fox

Line: Dallas by 1

I like the Saints to get’er done here. Don’t trust Dallas to make the playoffs. They’ve blown it too many times. Drew Brees and company should light up the Cowboys, though they are playing better on defense. Romo and Cowboys will put up some points on Saints’ defense but it won’t be enough. I like the Saints in a mild upset.

Saints 35, Cowboys 31

Bengals (8-6) @ Steelers (7-7)

1 PM ET/ noon CT

CBS

Steelers by 3 1/2

Don’t trust either one of these teams really, but always like the Steelers over the Bengals, particularly at home.

Giants (8-6) @ Ravens (9-5)

4:25 PM ET/ 3:25 CT

FOX

Giants by 1

I don’t trust either one of these teams either. Both teams limping home, but I’ll take Eli over Flacco, who may never lead his team to a championship.

Giants 24, Ravens 21

49ers (10-3) @ Seahawks (9-5)

8:20 PM ET/ 7:20 CT

NBC

Niners by 1

Like both of these teams a lot, but think that Colin Kaepernick is better than Russell Wilson at quarterback. Both defenses are excellent and both teams can win the Super Bowl with the type of defense they play and their pretty potent offenses. Frank Gore for the Niners and Marshawn Lynch for the Seahawks are both terrific backs. This will be a war. With all due respect to the Patriots, I think these are the two best teams in the NFL. This is a tough one to pick, but I’m going with the Niners. They look to be the best team in the league. But it’ll be a stellar game.

We’ve got a tough one tonight; gotta go to work

Vandy vs. MTSU

@ 9 PM ET/8 CT at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville. ESPNU will televise.

Middle Tennessee State is presently 8-3 with a 65-62 home win over a pretty good Ole Miss team, an 84-64 victory over UAB and a 75-61 victory over Central Florida at UCF. Their three losses have come to Florida (45-66), Akron in overtime (77-82) and Belmont (49-64). So they’re definitely beatable, but we have to be ready to put our hard hats on. These MTSU guys would love to beat us. We’re their biggest rival without a doubt.

The Blue Raiders are led in scoring by Marcos Knight, a 6’2″, 216 guard, who is averaging 12.5 per game. He has also pulled down 5.3 boards. Shawn Jones, a 6’8″, 236 power forward, is averaging 10 per game and pulling down 5.7 rebounds. Raymond Clinton, a 6’0″, 198 guard, is averaging 8.7 per game. They shoot 44% from the field, 35 % from three and 68% from the line. They are averaging, as a team, 36 rebounds per game. We are averaging 32.9. They have 156 assists to 147 turnovers (13.3 to’s per game). They are scoring 70.7 per game and giving up 60.5. Opponents are shooting 42% against them from the field and 28% from trifecta.

Their coach, Kermit Davis, is in his 11th season and has compiled a 188-136 record (58%) at MTSU. He is 325-211 (61%) overall in his 18th season as a head coach, both on the junior college level and the Division One level. He hasn’t taken MTSU to the tournament, but did take Idaho in 1989 and 1990. Looks like he’s got his program pretty well positioned for the present and the future. He’s got a pretty veteran group this year with six seniors and seven juniors. He just turned 53 on Dec. 14.

VU is 5-4 on the season coming off a 66–55 victory over Cornell Monday Night. Kedren Johnson is leading us in scoring at 17 per game. He’s also averaging 2.7 assists and 4.4 rebounds. Would like to see that assist number go up. Kyle Fuller is next at 13 per game along with three assists and three rebounds. Rod Odom is at 10.4 per game and 4.2 rebounds. Would like to see that rebound number go up a couple to around six per game. Kevin Bright is averaging 7.2 points per game and 7.3 rebounds. Kevin is an excellent rebounder and a very good three-point shooter. He’s shooting 56% from three (14-of-25). Kevin just needs to shoot it when he has an open look.

We are shooting 42.5 % from the field (opponents 41%), 36% from three (71-of-198) and 59.5 % from the line. The charity stripe has got to improve. The guys just need to relax at the line and focus on looking over the front of the rim, having a smooth stroke and knocking them down. That is a must. We’re going to lose some games late unless we can execute from the line better. Opponents are shooting 31% from three against us and 69% at the line. We are averaging 61.2 points per game and our opponents are averaging 60 per game. We pull down 33 rebounds per game and our opponents are pulling down 33  as well. We are averaging 11.3 assists per game and 12.9 turnovers. Our opponents are averaging 11.1 assists and 12.7 turnovers.

Kevin Stallings is 261-159 in 14 seasons at VU (62%). He is 364-222 overall (62%).

We’re going to have to ratchet up the defense and be solid from three. Josh Henderson needs to give us good work inside and when Shelby Moats and James Siakam are in, they need to be good. J.T. Sulton is a 6’8″, 223 pound senior who’s averaging 4.1 rbg. Neiko Hunter is 6’7″, 221, and he averages three boards a game. They’ve got some beef and Marcos Jones is a good rebounding guard. So this is tough. Winnable, but tough.

If we can get good work from the inside guys, Henderson, Odom and the others, both scoring and rebounding, and we can be sharp with our shooting, both inside and outside the arc,  and we lock down on D which we have to do all year since we’re not always prolific at scoring, we’ve got a good shot of winning this. I’m going to say we get these things done and move to 6-4. And we’ve got to be better at the line. That’s critical in a game like this.

Us 70, MTSU 66

I’m getting pretty bearish on the Bears. Play at Arizona Sunday at 4:25 PM ET/3:25 CT. Lance Briggs was complaining about the booing by the Chicago fans. It’s tough, but these fans are starved for a championship, and they are passionate about their football team. They had such high hopes for this team when it was 7-1, but  the team has let them down in the last six. The fans have a right to boo with some of the less than stellar play on both sides of the ball from this football team. Briggs just needs to focus on doing everything he can to help his football team win and not worry about the fans’ booing. They’re disappointed and they have a right to be. They pay good money on Sundays to see high priced players like Briggs win football games and the Bears haven’t been getting the job done. So they can do whatever they want. If the Bears would win, the fans would be ecstatic and lauding them. You have to take the bad with the good. Gotta win.

The Bears can get right back in the hunt for a  wild card spot if they can win at Arizona. Win against the Cards and take care of business at Detroit (which won’t be easy), and the Bears should make it in. But they’ve got to get a lot better starting with Cutler. He’s got to get on the same page with his receivers. The defense played OK last week against Green Bay, but they’ve got to get better too. Not sure why defensive coordinator  Rod Marinelli didn’t blitz more last week to try and throw ARodg off. Kind of a mystery. If the Bears want any chance at the playoffs, they have to win Sunday. It’s do or die.

Bears 24, ‘Zona 17

Quick thoughts on last night and a look at the Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Bowl

Bowl Record: 3-0

Wow, that BYU defense was something special last night as the Cougars beat San Diego State, 23-6. If linebacker Kyle Van Noy is not a first round pick in April it’s a travesty. He forced and recovered a fumble in the end zone in the fourth quarter to put the Cougars ahead 10-6, then later  intercepted a pass and returned it for a 17-yard score. He was awesome. He looks like a top 15 pick to me. He’s a junior and BYU kids are serious about academics and their missionary work, but if he wants to come out, an NFL team will welcome him with open arms. He is fantastic. Linebacker Ezekiel Ansah is going to be a first rounder too, most likely. He’s a player. Junior linebacker Brandon Ogletree looks like he’ ll play on Sundays in two years. They are a special linebacking corps. It’s a special defense. Just shutdown a high flying Aztec offense and caused five turnovers. That was a fantastic performance by one of the best defenses in the country.

Also, punter Riley Stephenson could have punched his ticket to the league next year with three punts inside the five and six punts inside the 2o. He put on a masterful performance. He changed field position constantly and was a key reason BYU won. He’s a senior and I know these kids are serious about their missionary work, so the NFL could be delayed for a couple of them. But if these guys want to go, Van Noy, Ezekiel and Stephenson, they will be highly coveted in the draft and be terrific players on Sundays..

Now for a look at tonight Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Bowl:

Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Bowl

Teams: Ball State (9-3) vs. Central Florida (9-4)

Where: Tropicana Field (capacity 40,473), St. Petersburg, Florida

Time: 7:30 PM ET/6:30 CT

TV: ESPN

Announcers: Dave Neal, Andre Ware, Desmond Howard and Cara Capuano (sideline)

Line: UCF by 7

Key players; UCF: running back Latavius Murray: 177-1035 yds. 5.8 average, 14 TDs; quarterback Blake Bortles: 229-336, 62.6%, 2,787 yards, 22 TDs and 7 ints. 7 TDs rushing; wide receiver J.J. Worton: 41 catches, 562, 4 TDs; wide receiver Jeff Godfrey: 36-400, 3 TDs; wide receiver Rannell Hall: 31-557, 4 TDs; Cornerback Kemal Ishmael: 116 tackles, five for loss, three ints, three fumbles recovered; linebacker Troy Davis: 9 tackles for loss, 6.5 sacks, three fumble recoveries.

Ball State: Running back Jahwan Edwards: 218-1,321, 6.1 average, 14 TDs; quarterback Keith Wenning: 279-426 (65.5 %), 2,878 yards, 22 TDs, 10 ints; wide receiver Willie Snead 82-1070, 13.0 average, seven TDs; wide receiver Jamill Smith 69-706, 10.2 average, 6 TDs; wide receiver Zane Fakes: 51-404, five TDs; linebacker Travis Freeman: 119 tackles; defensive end Jonathan Newsome: 12 tackles for loss, 8.5 sacks.

This should be a good game. UCF has the better defense by the numbers, and Ball State quarterback Keith Wenning is just back after missing three games with a broken ankle,  so he could be rusty. Although I like the running game of UCF led by Murray and like their defense better, Ball State is 0-5 in bowl games and are hungrier from what I’ve researched. So I like the Cardinals to pull off the upset.

Ball State 28, UCF 24
