Wow, that was a sensational performance by the Tide and another brutal one by the Tigers. A.J. McCarron 15-of-21 for 216 yards and four TDs. Wow, that’s something else. Eddie Lacy 18 carries for 131 yards and two more scores. Amari Cooper five catches for 109 yards and two TDs. Robert Lester and Ha Ha Clinton-Dix each with a pickoff. Dee Milliner with a fumble recovery he returned 17 yards. What else can you ask for? I thought Jeoffrey Pagan showed off some of his massive potential at defensive end. The oline was terrific as usual. Now it’s Georgia and a chance to play for an SEC, and, with a win, another national championship. ‘Bama is a 6 1/2 point favorite right now. I think they’re going to win by more. Georgia is a very good football team, and this is no knock on them–they’ve had a great season– but I just think the Tide has recovered fully from A&M, and is ready to excel on the biggest stages. Notre Dame, to me, is not as good as Georgia, Florida, Texas A&M or Stanford. They beat Stanford at home barely on a very controversial call in the end zone in which the Stanford player was ruled he didn’t score while in fact he did. The refs blew that game. I’d like to see Stanford, Florida or A&M play Notre Dame. I think they’d win. Notre Dame is pretty good. Not great. Georgia is better than Notre Dame. Boy a playoff would be interesting this year with the winner of the SEC Championship game playing Notre Dame and A &M playing Florida or even Stanford. There is a committee that will select the teams in the 2014 playoffs and in my opinion those are the four teams that should be playing in it if a playoff were held this year. I’d have a little trouble between Stanford and A&M, but if Stanford won the PAC 12 title game, they’d get the nod. A&M would if Stanford lost. But we don’t have a playoff yet, so we can just speculate. Stanford still has to beat UCLA for the second week in a row (ridiculous) to make it to the Rose Bowl to play either Nebraska or Wisconsin. Like Stanford and Nebraska in the Rose Bowl. If Stanford gets upset by UCLA, then it’ll be interesting to see how the bowls shake out. UCLA would be in it, but they shouldn’t get by Stanford to make the Rose Bowl. I like Florida in the Sugar most likely, and A&M in the Cotton, with Georgia going to a New Years’ Bowl, most likely the Outback. That’s assuming the Tide beats Georgia, which I think they will. But this could be a very entertaining game. Still not sold on Mark Richt and Aaron Murray in big games. Know they beat Florida in Jacksonville which propelled them to the East title, but Murray had thrown three interceptions in the first half, and his clinching touchdown pass was really just a seven yard pass, which Malcolm Mitchell, Georgia’s talented wide receiver, took to the house 50 yards to beat the Gators. But Jarvis Jones, Alec Ogletree, John Jenkins and Bacarri Rambo are outstanding defensive players, and there are playmakers on offense. Todd Gurley is an elite running back and Keith Marshall is pretty outstanding as well. But can Georgia run it on the Tide? Nobody else has been able to this season besides Johnny Football and Jeremy Hill of LSU. I think Alabama will be geared up to stop the run, so Murray is going to have to make something happen with his arm. Like Dan Mullen said before his team’s game with the Tide, you have to try and run it and establish something on the ground to set up the pass. If Georgia can run the ball, that would help their chances exponentially. But I like S, Kirby Smart and their talented football team in this game. Just think they’ll have too much power and skill for the ‘Dawgs. And if the Tide gets by the Dawgs, I like them against the Irish in title game. Like S and the team to bring home the programs’ third national title in four years. It doesn’t get much better than that, though for Alabama fans the future looks very bright too. Who knows what the Tide can do if they could keep S and company at the helm for 10 more years? He’s not even close to retiring, he’s like a 30-year old coach energy-wise, so the Tide will keep on rolling.
I just hate this for Auburn fans. Gene Chizik had a 5-19 record coming into Auburn, and while he did win a championship with an NFL quarterback and some stellar offensive players and some pretty good defensive players whom he didn’t recruit except for Cam, he just wasn’t cut out for a big time job. Seems like a nice guy, but just couldn’t get the job done. Auburn has a lot of talent. I truly believe it. Whether it was lack of good coaching or players who didn’t care, well, it was both really. When you have talent like Auburn has, though there were some young guys, you need to be winning 10 games, not losing nine. Where does Auburn go from here? Hopefully the NCAA won’t hammer the Tigers with sanctions from this Javon Robinson mess out of Memphis and whatever else Trooper and Luper may have done . That would add more insult to injury. Who can AU get? The first guy that came to my mind before last Saturday was Jimbo Fisher. But does he want to leave FSU to come to what would be considered somewhat of a lateral job, though Auburn is considered by many to be an elite job. And even if he did, the loss to North Carolina State and then the domination by the Gators over the ‘Noles puts some doubt in ones’ head about Fisher and if he can get it done. But Fisher would be a quality candidate. Somebody I’m sure the Tigers would take. I’ve heard Jeff Fisher, who’s coaching the St. Louis Rams, is a potential candidate. His son, Trent, plays for AU. That could be possible. He’s not been wildly successful in the NFL. He won earlier in his career, struggled with Tennessee later in his career but is doing pretty decently in his first year at St. Louis. So that’s interesting. Maybe a good d coordinator. I don’t know if Kirby Smart would take it. Auburn may not offer and he may not accept if offered. The guy at Florida, Dan Quinn, is an excellent defensive coordinator. Florida was outstanding on defense this season. He might be an interesting choice. I’ve heard him in interviews. He’s impressive. The offensive coordinator for Florida, Brent Pease, is also stellar. The offensive and defensive coordinators at A&M, Kliff Kingsbury (offense) and Mark Snyder (defense) could be interesting choices. It might be exciting to get a young, hungry guy, who would sprint to Auburn for the opportunity to coach the Tigers. Should be a pretty fascinating time on the Plains. Bo Jackson, Pat Sullivan, Jay Jacobs and some business guy are on the committee to find a coach. A couple of good football minds, so they should make a good choice. We’ll see what happens. Hopefully, AU can avoid the wrath of the NCAA also.
Otherwise, tremendous day in college football Saturday. Georgia and Florida both looked awesome. Florida really impressed me as they just dominated the fourth quarter over FSU. Really impressive football team right now. Will Muschamp has it going in Gainesville. Miles and LSU earned a hard fought win on Friday at Arkansas. Can’t argue with Miles’ results. Keeps getting it done and his recruiting class is ranked second by Rivals. LSU is behind only USC in recruiting rankings. Miles has LSU in good shape now and shaped well for the future. He’s a character, which is refreshing, and he gets the job done well. Ball Coach with another classic season at SC with 10 wins. Beautiful second half against Clemson. The backup quarterback , Dylan Thompson, threw for three touchdowns, and Jadeveon Clowney is a dominator. Four and a half sacks against Clemson. Are you kiddin me? The guy is terrific. The bad news for the SEC East is he’s coming back next year. Steve Spurrier has gotten Mr Football in South Carolina since 2009, from Alshon Jeffrey to Jadeveon Clowney to Stephon Gilmore to, there’s another one. He just keeps excelling and at 67, he’s not slowing down.
Vanderbilt is a pretty impressive story as well. 8-4 in James Franklin’s second year at the helm and there’s a good chance the Commodores could go to the Gator Bowl. Franklin is a hot commodity. As a Vandy alum, I hope James wants to retire from Vanderbilt, but that may be wishful thinking. How about Ole Miss and the job Hugh Freeze did this year. When I watched the Rebs in their spring game, I thought the team would be lucky to win two games. But they finished with a 6-6 record and are going bowling. I think the future for the Rebels is very bright under Freeze. They, like Vandy, have a very fine recruiting class coming in. Excellent job from a guy who has paid his dues and has earned his early success.
This weekend was terrific, and with title games, bowl games and the national championship coming up, a lot to look forward to. I’ll have more as the week progresses.
That’s what the studio host said on ESPNU after our 55-21 victory over Wake on Saturday about our football team. Zac (above) rushed for 180 yards on 21 carries for the afternoon; an average of 8.6 a carry including a 90-yard jaunt in the fourth quarter. What a player, what a leader. Jordan Rodgers and Jordan Matthews aren’t too bad either. JRodge was 17-of-23 for 229 and 2 TDs. JMatt had 10 catches for 144 yards and a score. I think JRodge should make an NFL roster. With Jordan Rodgers, he just got behind when he got to us a couple of years ago then injured his shoulder in the spring before the 2011 season and was always catching up. He’s got it totally together now and he’s outstanding. I think he could be a good pro. He just keeps getting better. I want JMatt to stay another year with us, he’s a junior, but he’s got the ability to play at the NFL level in 2013. But I don’t even want to think about JMatt going pro. We’ve got to have him another year.
Here are some stats that I think you’ll find interesting: this was our first eight-win season since 1982; it was our first six-game win streak since 1948; it was our first season of five games of 40+ points scored since 1915. Zac Stacy set the school record with a career rushing mark of 3,036 yards. Jordan Matthews set the single season record for receiving yards with 1,262. Kicker Carey Spear, who converted field goals of 52 and 50 yards on Saturday-when has that ever happened?–had 81 points, which is the highest single season total for points in Vanderbilt history. Our fourth road win was the first time that has happened since 1948.
And the beauty of this season is it’s not over. Got one more to get ready for, then close out a stellar recruiting year in 2013 and get ready for another big year next year. I’ve heard from some sources that the Gator Bowl is very interested in us. I thought it was Chick-fil-A, but I’m hearing Gator now. With Mississippi State’s loss to Ole Miss on Saturday, I think we’ve very much in the mix for the Gator on New Year’s Day in Jacksonville. The Music City is still out there, but I like our chances for the Gator. Wow, that would be awesome. I’m hearing we could possibly play Wisconsin or another team from the Big Ten. Exciting stuff.
But I just want to say another thing about these players. We all know what a miraculous job James has done with the program, bringing so much energy into the program, the school and the community. He’s been sensational. I hope he stays with us for the rest of his career May be a stretch, but the kids love him, the school loves him, Nashville loves him and all the alumni around the country love him. He can sell one of the top college degrees in the country, an awesome city and a team that believes it can play for championships in the next however many years he’s with us. What is not to love about that? I wish I could say James is going to make Vanderbilt his last stop, but I can’t guarantee it. But this year sure has been a thrill, and I want to thank him as an alumnus for what he’s done for the program.
But it’s the players too who have made the commitment, been through their first two or three years of hard times, hung with it, and are reaping the benefits of their dedication and loyalty to the university and their football team. I have thought about that John Mellencamp song, “Hard Times for An Honest Man,” and have thought about how tough it’s been for our football players at times throughout their careers. Zac, Jordan Rodgers, Rob Lohr, Ryan Seymour, Trey Wilson, Josh Jelesky, Johnell Thomas, Austin Monahan, Archibald Barnes, Colt Nichter, all the seniors, and the juniors who have persevered through difficult times, deserve this. Man, have they ever earned this. So proud of them and for them. I think many of these guys can play in the league next year or when they get used to the speed of the next level; maybe in two or three years.
Zac ended up with 1,034 yards on the season and nine TDs. He averaged 5.7 yards per carry and 86.2 per game. Jordan Rodgers completed 175-of-294 passes (59.5%) for 2,431 yards and 13 TDs against five ints. Many of those yards and TDs came in the last six games during our winning streak. JRodge was awesome. Jordan Matthews caught 87 passes for 1,262 yards and 7 TDs. Chris Boyd caught 46 balls for 756 and four TDs. The offensive line just kept getting better and better and were exceptional in the last six games. Wesley Johnson, Ryan Seymour, Josh Jelesky, Jake Bernstein and Joe Townsend were awesome. This line has been thin this year as James has tried to keep the redshirts on our six freshmen who he and the coaches are very excited about. The guys who have been playing on the line have been stellar. Chase White has done a good job off the bench. Just a phenomenal job by line coach Herb Hand and his group. Awesome stuff.
Also, Andrew Williamson blocked a punt that Casey Hughes recovered in the end zone for a score and Jonathan Krause peeled off an 83-yard punt return for a touchdown. Andre Hal made another big play recovering a fumble caused by Colt Nichter, and Archibald Barnes picked off a pass. Defense was just swarming. Safety Javon Marshall led the team with eight tackles and Rob Lohr had three tackles for loss.
What else can we do? This season has just been an incredible journey. I know the makeup of these guys though, and they’ll prepare intensely for this bowl game. The seniors want to cement their legacy with a bowl win, the younger guys want to practice the extra 12-15 days to get ready for the bowl game and next year. It’s such an exciting time. Ole Miss had an awesome game on Saturday Night and I heard that four-star running back Mark Dodson may be pretty sold on Ole Miss. But you never know. James has a couple of months to turn Mark. L3 is still out there and we’re not giving up on Jalen Ramsey (five star db) or guys like Trevor Walker, Delando Crooks and other guys to fill those coveted final three or four spots for 2013. We’ll do well closing it out and get ready for a banner 2013 season and then continue our recruiting for the 2014 class. We’re already planning for that and have a few excellent commits already.
Just want to enjoy this though and get ready for our bowl game. Will keep you posted on where we’re going.
Basketball with a great win yesterday over UTEP, 73-49. Moved to 2-3 on the season. Thought we played very well after a couple of tough losses in our first two games of the Old Spice Classic in Orlando. Rod Odom had 16 points and seven boards, Kede Johnson finished with 17 and Kyle Fuller added 14. We were nine-for-19 from three with Rod, Kede and freshman Kevin Bright all sinking two apiece. We got tremendous hustle from guys like Shelby Moats and Sheldon Jeter off the bench. I think Sheldon, a freshman, is going to be an outstanding player for us. Sheldon, who plays small forward, shoots it well and is highly athletic. He’s going to be excellent. Real encouraged with the performance. I think Kevin was too. Play Villanova next Saturday at 4 PM on ESPN2. With the SEC Championship game on at 3, may have to go back and forth on our game, but will watch the replay on E3. If Rod can step up and play the way he’s capable, Kede keeps up his stellar play and Kyle gets it going, the other guys do their jobs, and we finally get Dai-Jon Parker back, we can be a dangerous basketball team. I know I’ve said this, but I like the makeup of this group a lot. A lot of heart and hustle in this bunch. Could be a surprisingly good year and really pumped for ’13-’14.
Jeff Taylor and Fes Ezeli are getting extensive playing time for the Charlotte Bobcats and Golden State Warriors respectively. Proud for Jeff and Fes. Hoping they’ll have lengthy, successful careers. John Jenkins got in four three minutes in the Atlanta Hawks game on Saturday. They’re bringing JJ along slowly. They’ve got a really good team so it may take John a little time to break into the rotation. If JJ can shoot like he’s capable of though, he can play a lot of basketball in the NBA. It’s excellent exposure for recruiting for young high school guys to see our guys playing in the NBA. Hopefully it’ll sway two more four-stars to come our way in the ’13 class. Really like four-star center Damian Jones, our signee this fall. Expect great things from Damian.
Bears played pretty well yesterday. Got really banged up though. Lost five guys in the game due to injury. Cornerback Charles Tillman hurt his ankle, running back Matt Forte had an ankle issue that took him out of the game Two linemen, Lance Louis (maybe our best lineman) and Chris Spencer, left the game with knee injuries. And Devin Hester had a concussion. Still won the game, 28-10. Jay was pretty sharp going 23-of-31 for 188 with one TD and one int. Brandon Marshall had 12 receptions for 92 yards. He’s a machine, though he did drop a touchdown pass later in the game. Defense played a lot better. Still need to keep improving in the passing game. Our receivers need to give Jay some help. Too many dropped balls. Alshon Jeffery is out for a couple more weeks after having his knee scoped, so we need to stay healthy there. Earl had a good game, particularly early, with four catches for 45 yards. Earl really needs to step up his game with Jeffery hurt. Good win though. Play a tough Seattle Seahawks team on Sunday at 1 PM ET/noon CT at Soldier Field. Seahawks have a tremendous defense. Our line, Jay and the receivers will be tested. Would be nice to have Forte back for the running game. Michael Bush does a pretty good job replacing Forte. This will be a very physical game.
Brandt playing in the World Challenge in Thousand Oaks, Caly this week. Should be fun to watch Brandt compete.
Will have more later this week including any commits and more bowl talk.
Lost to Davidson by 13 on Thursday (65-52) and to Marist by 17 (50-33) on Friday. It may sound simple but just not putting the ball in the goal. Kede Johnson and Kyle Fuller played 38 and 36 minutes respectively yesterday at guard, after playing the same amount of minutes the day before. Kede was awesome Thursday with 28 and Kyle added 14 against Davidson, a high caliber team, but they just lost their legs on Friday and both scored only four points. There is no depth at guard right now with Dai-Jon suspended and A.J. Astroth, our freshman, hurt with a strained hamstring. Neither are playing. They should be back soon. The bright spot is the play of power forward James Siacum,. He had eight points and eight boards yesterday. James is a little undersized, but he really plays hard and is going to be a very productive player on the block for us this year. Sheldon Jeter, our freshman small forward, is going to be a good player for us also. Center Josh Henderson, power forward Shelby Moats and small forward Kevin Bright are learning as they play in their first year. They have talent, just need more experience. We need to get Dai-Jon back; it should be December when he gets back. Kevin is tough on his disciplne, so I hope Dai-Jon has learned his lesson and has gotten his act together. I think he’s a good kid who made a mistake. We need him to get his act together and start helping us play good basketball. There are a lot of good players on this team, we’re just going through some growing pains. I still think we can be a good basketball team come mid-January, early February, it’s just going to take some more developing. Can we make it to the tourney? We’ll have to see. It can happen. Power forward Rod Odom has to play better. Kevin said we’re just pressing right now, we’re tight, and I think Rod is putting a lot of pressure on himself to carry the load at power forward and as a leader and it’s kind of working against him. Hang in there with Rod and the rest of the team. Rod is a good player. Waiting for him to break out. He just needs to relax and play his game. We’re all pressing some and that causes us to miss some easy baskets. We’re hustling and defending pretty well and doing a decent job on the glass, just need to keep developing the chemistry and keep working hard. I know that sounds simple, but it’s what we need to do. We’ll keep getting better. I like the fact that we have no seniors on this team. So we can keep getting better and keep this team together for next year when we add a four-star center and an outstanding transfer point guard from Tulsa and hopefully two more good players in recruiting. Like the character of this group. We will get better. Play UTEP tomorrow at 11:30 ET/10:30 CT on ESPNU in the final game for us of the Old Spice Classic in Orlando.
There are some good national games tomorrow and a couple of good SEC games, but overall this is almost as bad as a bye week for fans of Alabama and Auburn as far as entertainment value goes. I guess Auburn fans haven’t gotten too much entertainment in anything their football team has done this year. Basketball doesn’t look too swift at this point either after a blowout loss to Murray State. That’s OK. Basketball has never mattered much at Auburn. But football does. And the talk of a new football coach is the paramount issue at Auburn.
You get to see your teams play this weekend, so that’s better than a bye week, and you want them to be as good as they can be. But after the last couple of weeks, this weekend is a real yawner. But Alabama is still playing for a lot, so the Western Carolina game matters to them. Maybe they both need these games. Alabama needs a break from a brutal two weeks and AU, what can you say, they just need a win any way they can get it if anybody cares.
So Western Carolina and Alabama A &M come to ‘Bama and Auburn respectively this weekend to get blasted, though A &M should do better against an Auburn team that has slid downward to its lowest point maybe ever in its proud football history. I don’t know how Auburn brings Chizik back next year. He’s lost the program. If this year is not proof, what else do you need? They’ll finish 0-8 in the SEC and win three games overall if they can get by A&M. Auburn has to get a new coach and a new athletic director.
For ‘Bama, a more exciting game is tonight’s basketball game vs. Villanova in the 2K Sports Classic at Madison Square Garden. Game will be at 6:30 PM CT on the Deuce. Should be a pretty fun game to watch. The Tide beat a good Oregon State team on a three-pointer from the left corner by Rodney Cooper last night in the final 10 seconds. It was very exciting. Expectations should be high for the basketball team. Anthony Grant is an exceptional coach.
But back to football. The Tide needs to win out over Western Carolina, Auburn and Georgia and HAS to get some help with two out of the three of K-State, Oregon or Notre Dame losing for the Tide to get a shot at the national championship. Western and AU will be wins, though Auburn should be up for ‘Bama, but Georgia now that’ll be a challenge. ‘Dawgs are a good football team and playing very well on both sides of the ball right now. Todd McShay has three of the Georgia defensive players in his mock draft going in the first round. Linebacker Jarvis Jones is projected by McShay to be the first pick overall. That’s pretty heady stuff. Defensive tackle John Jenkins (16) and linebacker Alec Ogletree (17) are also in McShay’s first round. They are highly talented on defense. And Aaron Murray looks like he can win big games now. He’s always had talent, but he’s struggled in the big games. That Florida win with his clutch game-winning throw to Malcolm Mitchell may have changed his fortunes in big games. The ‘Dawgs could give the Tide some trouble. That’s three weeks away though.
Here’s a look at this week’s games with predictions.
Where: Bryant-Denny Stadium, Tuscaloosa
When: 11:21 AM CT
Network: SEC Network (WTTO-21 in Birmingham)
Line: No line
Western Carolina is 1-9. Should not be a big problem. Tide just needs to play well and stay injury-free to get ready for the Iron Bowl and the SEC Championship game and hope for some help from USC, Stanford, Baylor or Oregon State.
Where: Jordan-Hare Stadium, Auburn
When: 2 PM CT
Network: Pay Per View
Line: No line
Surely Auburn can win this game. I don’t know how they can keep Gene Chizik regardless of this game, but if he loses this one, he might as well have the moving van waiting in the driveway when he gets home or Yella Fella and Pat Dye will gladly oblige if he doesn’t.
Where: Vanderbilt Stadium, Nashville
When: 6 PM CT
Network: ESPN2
Line: Vandy by four
Should be a very interesting game here. If James Franklin wants to really change the culture at Vanderbilt–which he has done a tremendouns job doing so far in his two years at the helm–he needs to beat the Vols. Tyler Bray, Justin Hunter and Cordarrelle pose problems for the Vanderbilt secondary, which has talent, but just can’t make stops or get interceptions this year like they could last year. But the Vanderbilt offense looks to be clicking pretty well right now. Big question is will running back Zac Stacy play. Franklin does not disclose any information on injuries, so all I can assume is that Stacy is questionable. I read where he practiced Wednesday Night, so that’s a good sign for VU. Should be the best SEC game of the weekend. Looking forward to this one. VU wins this and beats Wake they finish the season 8-4. That would be historic for Vandy.
According to Barton Simmons of Vandy-247, this is a huge recruiting weekend for us. Barton wrote that there would be a big time visitor Saturday at the Ewe T game. He hasn’t revealed who that is, but sounds like a high four-star, five-star type. Once I know more I’ll let you know. We have three spots left, depending on what they do with this kicker, and Barton has predicted we will definitely get a second running back. Maybe an OL and a safety to go along with the back. Will keep you posted on what’s up when I learn more. Should be quite a few very interesting visitors on Saturday. Hopefully we can have an exciting, electric atmosphere and beat the Vawls to lock in two or three more to this awesome class.
Getting behind 20-0 in the first quarter was not ideal, and there was some carry over effect from the LSU game. That LSU game was such a hard fought affair that the team may have had a little mental fatigue from it. That may sound like an excuse, but it’s just human nature to get tired mentally after a 15-week grind of football, and particularly after a game like the LSU game. And Texas A&M had a lot to do with it. They are playing as well as anybody in the country right now. They are an excellent football team. There is no doubt about that. Manziel, to me, is the co-leader for the Heisman Trophy with Collin Klein of Kansas State. If K-State goes undefeated and Klein keeps it up, he should win it. A player who is the heart and soul of his team that finishes the regular season undefeated and puts up the numbers to go with it like Klein does, deserves the Heisman. If it’s close with somebody else and his effect on his team and the stats are similar to the other guy who’s on a team that may have lost a couple of games, the guy on the undefeated team should get the nod. I don’t have a Heisman vote, but that’s the way I see it. But Manziel, if he keeps this up, will win the Heisman Trophy possibly next year. The guy is sensational. Highlight reel after highlight reel. Manziel was 24-of-31 for 253 yards and two TDs. His play in the first quarter in which he juggled the ball after the snap, retained possession and then threw a 10-yard TD pass to Ryan Swope was epic. Then his 24-yarder to Malcome Kennedy in the fourth quarter was a beautiful throw and catch in the end zone. Dee Milliner looked like he had pretty good coverage on Kennedy. It was just an exceptional play by Kennedy. Swope caught 11 passes for 111 yards and a TD. He’s the next Wes Welker and he may even be better than Welker as he makes more explosive plays. He should be a pro.
They were ready to play and Alabama had that sluggish start. Should ‘Bama have run when they had it first and goal on the last drive? Yes, at least two times. But I didn’t think going into that last play that they should absolutely run it. It could have gone either way with the play call. A&M had the line stacked, so even a run might have been difficult. Not sure about that particular pass play call. Thought A.J. should have dropped back and had four guys going out with Michael Williams over the middle for a possible TD. But I didn’t totally disagree with the play call. But there’s no looking back now. It’s over. That last first and goal situation was somewhat questionable, but you can’t have it back. Tide has to move forward as hard as that loss was and as questionable as the play calling was at the end. They did try a run with Eddie and it only got a yard. So Doug Nussmeier thought the Tide would have to pass to win it. After A.J.’s final drive performance against LSU, Nussmeier felt he wanted to put the ball in the hands of A.J. and let the line give him time to find a receiver. Thought rolling him out on fourth and goal was a little questionable. A dropback or maybe a run over Fluker were probably better calls, so that was tough to take. It’s over though. For Nussmeier it’s hard to learn on the job because people aren’t patient around here with mistakes when their team is always playing for the national championship and that is expected. So he’s got to learn from this. I hope he gets another shot. He’s done a good job this year, though that last drive play calling was a little questionable at first and goal.
Still have a lot to play for: the SEC championship, of course, the rest of this schedule with the Western Carolina game and the Iron Bowl. The matchup with a very good Georgia team in the Georgia Dome should be classic. That will be a very interesting game with two outstanding football teams. And it’s not out of the question for the Tide to get back in the mix for the national championship. Two teams have to lose in front of the Tide and the Tide HAS to take care of business. Oregon has games at home vs Stanford this Saturday. That’s is not a given. Stanford is a pretty good football team. Don’t know if they can keep up with the speed of Oregon, but if they can control the football, maybe they can pull off the upset. And then the Ducks have a rivalry game against a pretty good Oregon State team at OSU to close out the regular season. Then they’ll play in the PAC-12 championship game assuming they get through Stanford and Oregon State. They could beat Stanford and lose to OSU and still get in PAC-12 champ game. A lot to be decided for Oregon. A loss would probably knock them down behind the Tide. K-State plays at Baylor and at home against Texas to close out their regular season. Those are no kick-ins either by any means. Baylor can put a lot of points on the board and Texas is playing a lot better. They’re both pretty decent football teams. If K-State can get through those two games they’re most likely in. Notre Dame plays Wake Forest at home, and at USC. Wake Forest is pretty winnable, but USC at the Coliseum is no guarantee. So that’s interesting. Then there’s Georgia. If both the Tide and Georgia win out–the Dawgs have Georgia Southern and Tech at home, both should be wins– and the two of the top three teams lose, the SEC title game will be an epic. Should be a tremendous game regardless, but with losses by the 1, 2 and 3 teams–two of them will have to lose–then the title game will have the national title on the line.
So there is a lot to play for. But S is worried about the process; getting better every day as he should. I really learn a lot in his press conferences. He says everybody is concerned with the results, but he and his team need to focus on the process of getting better every day. I think you’ve got to have a mix. Ninety percent should be devoted to the process of getting better every day and 10 percent about the end result, the big picture. You always want to keep championships in your mind, but to get there you have to focus on being the best player you can be every day. You’ve got to improve. That’s S’s consistent message and I agree with him 100 percent. I learn a lot from S in that regard. Anyway, there is a lot of excitement left in college football, and ‘Bama is still in the hunt.
Auburn just need to start over. I thought they would lose handily to Georgia but not even that badly. Wow, that was rough. Chizik has just lost’em. Who do they turn to? Maybe Jimbo Fisher or Kevin Sumlin, but I don’t think they can get Sumlin away from A&M, and I don’t know if they can get Fisher away from FSU. Fisher may be more attainable. Jon Gruden? I’m just throwing out names. He would be an interesting option. Maybe a top flight assistant like the guy at A&M, Kliff Kingsbury, though that may be a reach going that route. Going from an assistant coach to a high profile head coaching job is a big step. Auburn is going to have to work hard to get a guy that can get this thing turned around, but there are coaches out there they can get who will be good fits for the university and the team, and who can turn this around. Auburn has a very solid football tradition. There are good football players on the Plains. They need a motivator, someone who’ll change the culture to a winning culture, the one Pat Dye had down there. There are coaches out there who can do that. There are good coaches out there who want this job. The players are good though untapped, the facilities are excellent and the support from the Auburn family is excceptional. Auburn just wants to start winning again. They can get that done with the right guy in charge. I’m sorry for Chizik, but he’s lost his authority on this team and he can’t win. Change is necessary and needed. AU fans deserve to be cheering for championships. The program has the tools for it. They just need a good coach. There’s somebody out there, more than one guy, who can get this thing turned around.
Will have more later.
I can’t get over how clutch Jordan Rodgers, Jordan Matthews and Chris Boyd were Saturday Night. But we’re starting to expect that from these guys. They are players. JRodge, with big brother ARodge and I think ARodge’s girlfriend, Destiny, in attendance, put on a show in the second half. He finished the game 20-of-35 for 267 yards, two TDs and no ints. Beautiful, exquisite performance by our senior leader. Jordan Matthews was just as spectacular catching 9 passes for 153 yards and one score, a phenomenal 52-yard strike from JRodge that hit Jordan M perfectly in stride as he raced past the cornerback and safety for Ole Miss. It was a critical play in the game because it occurred right after Ole Miss had scored to take a 23-6 lead. That cut the lead to 23-13 with 9:52 left in the third. The three other key plays were a catch by Boyd–who along with Matthews looks like an All-SEC player to me– right on the Ole Miss sideline. It was critical. We had a third and 10 on our own 49 and JRodge threw a nice pass toward the left sideline which Boyd leapt for and caught keeping one foot in bounds for an 18-yard gain to the Ole Miss 33. It was reviewed and was close to being out of bounds, but the refs made the proper call and didn’t overturn it. This was later in the third quarter. If Chris doesn’t make that catch, a beautiful play, we would have had to punt and our chance to win would have gotten a little slimmer. However, we made the plays to get down there after that and Wes Tate ran it in from two yards to cut the lead to 23-20 late in the third. Chris finished with one more catch which was a flat out classic.
Last drive, we’re down 26-20 inside two minutes left, fourth and two. James calls for Jordan to roll out and throw it to JMatt or maybe tight end Kris Kentera. JRodge rolls right, sees his receivers are covered and takes off for the first down. He dives and gets just past the marker thankfully before the Ole Miss defenders get there. Then Jordan, after an incomplete pass to JMatt and a four-yard completion to Wes Tate, connects with Kentera on a beautiful 21-yard pass right over the middle of the defense that gets us to the Ole Miss 26. Next play, with under a minute left, Jordan drops back, gets terrific protection from the line who played an awesome game, and lofts it in the air in the direction of Chris on the left sideline, our sideline. Boyd gets by the cornerback, catches the ball at the 10 and takes it in with 52 seconds left to tie it at 26. That was a wow moment for sure. How clutch was that? Extremely. Carey Spear, who has been terrific this year, converted the extra point, and defensive coordinator Bob Shoop dialed up the pressure on Ole Miss’s final possession as we held them on downs to secure our sixth win and qualify for a bowl game.
A friend of mine asked me what bowl I thought we were going to. I told him honestly that I hadn’t thought about a bowl one iota because I’m a believer in James’s one game at a time approach. When James says we’re trying to be 1-0 every week, I wasn’t sure about that strategy at first– I kind of like a big picture approach too– but that’s exactly what has worked for this football team, the whole program-players, coaches, alumni and fans. If we win out and go 8-4, I think we can go to the Chick fil-A bowl in Atlanta. That would be beautiful. Excellent bowl, fun city, outstanding exposure. Music City is a possibility, I’ve heard the Compass Bowl in Birmingham or the Liberty Bowl again are possibilities. I just want this team to go to the best bowl possible. I would like to see us in the Chick-fil-A. To me, the better the bowl, the better it is for recruiting. We just need to close out Tennessee this Saturday. Would be huge. By the way, C Boyd caught five passes for 64 yards and that incredibly clutch touchdown. The offensive line, Wesley Johnson, Ryan Seymour, Josh Jelesky, Joe Townsend and Chase White, were phenomenal. Line coach Herb Hand is doing a masterful job with the group and these players are tough, hard-working, blue-collar winners. They’re studs.
The only blemish was Zac’s injury. Not sure where Zac stands. James does not talk about injuries; that’s his policy. But Zac was on the sideline during the second half and he didn’t have a wrap on his knee. Maybe he’ll be OK. Hopeful for Zac for his career now and possibly the future in the NFL. If there is anyone who deserves a crack to make a living playing football on Sundays it’s Zac Stacy because he’s such a hard worker, such an awesome son and big brother to his autistic younger brother, and such a great teammate and leader on this football team. He’s the heart and soul of the team along with head coach James Franklin. Hope and pray for Zac’s speedy recovery. It would be nice if it’s just a mild strain, so we can get him back. Wow, football can be cruel at times. But hoping Zac will be suiting up this weekend.
Have to give credit to our defensive front as well. Walker May and Rob Lohr played incredible games getting pressure on the talented quarterback for Ole Miss, Bo Wallace. The whole defense came through when they had to. Would like to see our secondary play a little better in coverage, but that’s something we’ll have to work on this week with Tyler Bray, Justin Hunter and Cordarrelle Patterson coming to town. Tennessee will definitely want to knock us off. Derek Dooley looks like he’s out as the coach and I’m sorry for him. Seems like a good guy. That will probably give the UT players extra motivation this Saturday. We have got to be ready to play for 60 minutes. Our dbs will have to play better in coverage. They’ve got a pretty good offensive line, so we’re going to have to mix in some blitzes with our regular four-man rush. Our dline and lbs need to excel. This is going to be a very tough game. We’ll have to really tighten up on defense to pull this one off. I think we can score. Would be nice if Zac plays, but Wes Tate and Brian Kimbrow are playing good football for us now, so if we need to protect Zac’s knee, Wes and Kimbrow will be ready.
Just so proud of James, his coaches and the players. The future looks bright this season and in the upcoming years. Can’t wait for Saturday.
Bears lost a tough one to the Texans, 13-6, at Soldier Field last night. Jay went out at halftime with a concussion. Thought it was going to be a little more high scoring, but when I wrote the blog on Friday, I hadn’t checked the weather in Chicago for last night. Rookie mistake. It won’t happen again. That rascal Jay, he plays so aggressively, that I just worry about him. He reminds me so much of Jim McMahon, the quarterback for the Bears in the ’80’s who led his highly talented Bears team to a Super Bowl Championship in 1985. He played with that reckless abandon that Jay plays with. He was fearless. He wasn’t as humble as Jay is, and you may think that Jay can be a little cocky at times, but I really don’t. I think Jay is very confident, but overall he’s mellowed and has become humble. He’s just an intense competitor. Anyway, McMahon is suffering from middle stage dementia and his prognosis is not looking good. I read an article about him in SI and it was pretty sad about his memory loss and his depression. I feel terrible for McMahon and any player that has to suffer through that, and I don’t want it to happen to Jay. He might need to tone it down on his fearless play. Jay may not be capable of doing that because he’s such a tremendous competitor, and I want him to be that way if that’s what he wants to do. I just worry about his long term mental state if he keeps getting crushed by these linemen and linebackers, even the safeties. But Jay’s going to do whatever it takes to win. Not sure if he’ll be available for Niners next Monday Night. Will stay on top of it and let you know. We just turned the ball over too much last night. Houston took a little better care of the ball and scored one touchdown on a beautiful throw and catch by Matt Schaub and Arian Foster respectively. Lance Briggs had excellent coverage on Foster, he just made a phenomenal play. The conditions were horrific. Pouring rain, cold. We just didn’t handle the conditions very well fumbling twice and throwing two ints. Couldn’t catch the ball very well either. Got to get back to work. We’re 7-2 and lead the Packers by a game in the NFC North. Niners will be tough, but winnable. Hopefully, Jay will be back. It was unfair for Jason Campbell in that situation because it was really hard to throw the ball in those conditions. Jason tried hard, bless him, it was just a horrible night weather-wise to try to play quarterback. Schaub threw two ints to Tim Jennings, who played a terrific game, but Houston didn’t fumble and that was big. I’ll keep you informed on Jay. We’ll get it back.
But huge win for our football team. Now we need to put it behind us and get ready for UT. Still is a lot of fun to think about. What a victory.
We’re 5-4 and one game away from a bowl game. They’re 5-4 and going for a bowl game. Pretty amazing what Hugh Freeze has done in his first year with the Rebs. I watched their spring game and it looked to me they’d win two games. But they’ve exceeded expectations and have played well this year. After a tough early season schedule, we’ve come alive. James has us playing as good or better ball than last year at this time. We’ve got a lot of momentum heading into Vaught-Hemingway Stadium. Both teams should be very amped up for this one. Game time is 7 PM ET/ 6 CT on ESPNU.
We have to get it done on both sides of the ball. I know James has been talking about turnovers all year; we just haven’t gotten as many. We definitely have the players in the secondary to get interceptions. Trey Wilson, Kenny Ladler and Andre Hal are exceptional athletes who are all playmakers. Archibald Barnes is a playmaker at linebacker. We need some turnovers from our defense tomorrow. Offensive line will also be critical. Ole Miss has 27 sacks on the season. Linebacker Denzel Nkemdiche, who is the older brother of Robert, the number one player in the country in this year’s high school senior class who decommitted from Clemson yesterday, is a player himself. We’ll have to be aware of him and be able to block him. They had five sacks against Georgia last week. So Wesley Johnson, Ryan Seymour and company will have to be ready. They need to get Zac some holes too. Need Zac to have a good game. Jordan to Jordan and Jordan to Chris Boyd will have to be on.
This is a huge one in Oxford. I say we get it done.
Huge tilt at Soldier Field at 8:20 PM ET/ 7:20 CT on NBC with Al Michaels and Cris Collinsworth on the call for Sunday Night football. The big question this week was whether Charles Tillman was going to play, as his fourth child was due on Sunday. That was a little bit nerve wrecking for Bears’ fans. Tillman said he’d be with his wife if the baby came on Sunday and would miss the game. Faith and family come first for sure, but football has got to be 1A. It turns out that Tillman and his wife will have their baby on Monday thank the Lord. We need the man to get us some turnovers against a pretty good offensive attack. Solid running game led by Arian Foster and pretty good passing game led by Matt Schaub and Andre Johnson. Tight end Owen Dainiel, who is having an excellent season for the Texans, is questionable with a hip injury.Their defensive line is tough on quarterbacks. Defensive end J.J. Watt has 10.5 sacks. The Texans have 25 sacks as a team. But ARodge and the Packers threw all over them three weeks ago on Sunday Night, so if Jay can get protection, he can find Brandon, Earl and Hester for some big plays. Would love to see Hester return a punt for a score. He’s overdue. We need all three phases to be clicking in this one. Line will be critical. They have to prove they can get the job done if this team has a shot at a Super Bowl title this year. Left tackle J’Marcus Webb will be under the gun again this week blocking Watt. He’s gotta get the job done. The line has been better, but they’ve got a lot to prove this Sunday Night. But the defense and enough offense will get it done for the guys this time. The Soldier Field crowd doesn’t hurt either.
