Saban trying not to be “normal”

Maybe a better word would be not to be average. I see what he’s saying on the field. A couple of his players, a recruit and a player on the team, aren’t too normal off the field, and that isn’t what you want from your players off the field, but I know he wants them to commit to excellence on the field.  Thus, not to be “normal.” Tomorrow night, the Tide plays host to Ole Miss and they need to keep playing well with a stretch coming up that includes, after a off week, at Missouri, at Tennessee, home versus Miss. State and on the road at Baton Rouge, Nov. 3. It’s a gauntlet for a lot of teams, but if this team can stay healthy, particularly at quarterback, it should be in pretty good shape going forward. Ole Miss is very young under first year coach Hugh Freeze. I went to the game two years ago in Tuscaloosa with the exact same start time on a Saturday Night and the Tide looked sluggish winning only 23-10. They need to keep the momentum going this week. I think this could be the best team S has had providing A.J. doesn’t get hurt. They just need to play their game tomorrow night and they’ll be fine.
This week’s picks:

Last week: 15-0; Overall: 44-13 (77%)

Ole Miss @ No.1 Alabama

Time: 8:15 CT

Where: Bryant-Denny Stadium

Network: ESPN

‘Bama just needs to keep playing well and improving. That’s what this game is about. If they execute properly tomorrow night, they’ll take care of business. I expect kind of an uglier game though.

Alabama 31, Ole Miss 7

Tennessee @ No.5 Georgia

Time: 2:30 PM CT

Where: Sanford Stadium, Athens, Ga.

Network: CBS

‘Dawgs playing really well after thrashing Vandy last week, 48-3. Aaron Murray playing lights out and the two running backs, Todd Gurley and Keith Marshall, are dynamite. The defense should be getting back safety Bacarri Rambo and linebacker Alec Ogletree from suspensions. They’re already pretty stellar and these two guys will make them even better. Georgia starting to look like the best team in the East. This is a rivalry game for sure, but I like the Dawgs to handle the Vols pretty easily. May be a pretty good first half or even three quarters, but the ‘Dawgs should take over later in the game. UT just not good enough on defense. Georgia takes care of business tomorrow afternoon setting up a colossal tilt @ South Carolina next Saturday @ 6 PM CT on ESPN.

‘Dawgs 42,  UT 24

Tulsa @UAB

Time: 2 PM CT

Where: Legion Field

Network: None

Blazers pretty banged up after consecutive weeks at South Carolina and the Ohio State. Wide receivers really banged up. A couple of their starters are very questionable to play and they are the best players on the team. Quarterback is unsettled with neither Jonathan Perry nor Austin Brown taking charge though Brown played most of the game last week. The Blazers are scrappy though and gave Ohio State a pretty good game last week. The defense is playing hard and the offense is starting to show signs of improvment. Tulsa lost to Iowa State, 38-23, in their first game, and just barely got by Fresno State, 27-26, last Saturday, so they’re beatable. Maybe the Blazers can pull it off. I think it’ll be close, but these injuries may prevent the Blazers from getting over the top.

Tulsa 31, UAB 28

Other games:

Texas A&M 42, Arkansas 35

Michigan State 24, Ohio State 21

South Carolina 35, Kentucky 14

West Virginia 45, Baylor 42

Missouri 31, Central Florida 27

Texas 35, Oklahoma State 31

Ryder Cup:

Should be a classic. Tiger, Phil, Furyk and Stricker will have to provide leadership for the younger guys. Brandt Snedeker best putter in the world. Matt Kuchar an excellent putter. Stricker an excellent putter. Think their putting could be the difference though  I really like Europe’s captain, Jose Maria Olazabal. He’s an iron man who won a lot of Cup matches with Seve, so he’ll be tough to beat. Think he might be a stronger captain than Davis Love. But I’m going for the U.S. on the home turf at Medinah. Should be riveting all weekend.

U.S. 14 1/2-Europe 13 1/2

Three elite teams in the country; some others who are very good

(S, Fisher and Richt getting it done in ’12.)

My three elite teams that look like national championship material are ‘Bama, FSU and Georgia in that order at this point. Any one of those teams could beat one another on a given day, but it looks like two of those three will be playing in Miami in January for the national title. I know there is a lot of seasonleft, but four games is a good gauge. Alabama has not played terrific competition, but they have destroyed two teams that were supposed to be good this year in Michigan and Arkansas. And that argument that they haven’t played anybody doesn’t fly with me. They killed Michigan at a neutral site and pummeled Arkansas at Arkansas. Granted it was without Tyler Wilson, but he wouldn’t have made a huge difference. That team was already in disarray with a coach who’s broke financially and is out of his league in the SEC. This could be S’s best team he’s had. I mean that too. This is the most talent he’s had on his roster in his six years at the helm. He’s maybe had a few more individual superstars on one team like Mark Ingram, Julio and Trent on that ’09 team to go along with Rolando McClain and Javy Arenas and others. But this depth of talent is amazing. it’s kind of a no-name defense but that’s a good thing.  Nobody stands out because there are so many stellar players. All of them seem like leaders; at least many of them do. And they are prolific players. After watching the Florida Atlantic game there was much better effort than the Western Kentucky game. And Western Kentucky is a pretty decent team as it turns out. But while Florida Atlantic wasn’t a huge margin of victory as expected, the players competed hard and did well, particularly on the defensive side of the ball. Didn’t think A.J. had his best day, but he wasn’t bad at all and still feel very good about him. He made some nice throws. Kenny Bell was fantastic on the 85-yard catch and run for a  TD. Wow. He was flying. Amari Cooper is going to be incredible. DeAndrew White made that beautiful catch in the end zone. That was an All-Amerian NFL first round catch there. Getting both feet in was a phenomenal play.  And I love some Kenyan Drake. Kenyan is my man. Eddie looked solid and T.J. had some pretty good runs. The defense was strong up front and the linebackers were active as usual. I was trying to think about a guy in the starting 22 who wouldn’t make an NFL roster. That’s the major question to me. Which one of these guys won’t play in the NFL? Anybody? And it’s not just the starting 22, I was trying to figure it out and to me there probably 60 guys on this roster who could make NFL rosters. That may be a stretch, but there are over 30. Chance Warmack is a first round pick, Barrett probably a late first rounder. A.J., if he continues to keep getting better and better, could go out and be a late first, early second pick in 2013, and definitely a first rounder in 2014. D.J.Fluker  looks like a potential first rounder. Cyrus Kouandijo will be a first rounder when he goes out in two or three years. Anthony Steen will get a shot with a team. I believe Arie Kouandijo, Cyrus’s older brother, will start playing well that he’s now back from injury and start turning some heads.

On defense, I don’t know a player who won’t. C.J. Mosley looks like a first rounder. Trey DePriest could slip into the first round when he comes out. Xzavier Dickson is a sophomore, but he’s going to be a first rounder. Nico Johnson, of course, could be first or early second. Dee Milliner is a first rounder. Maybe Lester too, though I’d like to see him start getting some more picks. Great leader out there though and heckuva player. I know he wants to get some more picks, but there’s so much talent out there, and he is certainly giving S and his teammates good results. He’s a player. Sunseri will get drafted. He looks like he could be a second or third round guy. Ha Ha is Mark Barron reincarnated. He’s a top 10 when he goes out in two years. Jeoffrey Pagan and Ed Stinson look like first rounders when they’re eligible. Damion Square looks like he could be late first or early second.  Quinton Dial is another. And, of course, Jesse Williams. He’s first round material. Don’t you think a tough defense like the 49ers, Bears or Steelers would love to have Jesse Williams in the middle. He can bench a couple of mack trucks and he’s quick. Stud there. Patriots might get him up there with Dont’a Hightower. Then on the offensive skill side you’ve got Michael Williams at tight end who will get a shot, the running backs, at least three of them, will get a shot when they go. Eddie is just going to keep getting better and better as he gets healthier. I think he’s a potential NFL player if he can stay healthy. T.J. will keep getting better and he’s NFL material for sure. Kenyan looks like he could be. He’s got a ways to go in his development, but the early returns look good. Would like to see Dee Hart do a little better and live up to his five-star rating out of high school. That knee injury slowed his progress. He’s got potential. And DeAndrew White, Kenny Bell, Christion Jones and Kevin Norwood should get shots when they come out. Didn’t see Norwood get the ball much on Saturday. He is battling a left leg problem thus he didn’t play much Saturday. These receivers are talented now. You can call them committee if you want, but it’s a superstar potential committee. All of them are excellent players. With the protection A.J. gets it should be exciting and electric seeing this passing game click. Not sure about the injury to Brandon Ivory. Know he was wearing a protective boot at the game after his injury. Will check into that and get back. Update: Ivory has a sprained ankle.

Just wanted to throw that out there, but the draft is for later. There’s another SEC and national title yet to win. Game against Ole Miss this Saturday at 8:15 PM CT on ESPN. Went to the game a couple of years ago. It was weird with the same 8:15 start in 2010. I think S’s message to his players will be to stay humble and hungry. That’s the message that needs to resonate throughout the locker room and on the practice field. If they do that, good things are going to happen on Saturdays and maybe on a Monday in January.

Now to the other elite contenders. Florida State looked very impressive coming back from a 10-point deficit and defeating Clemson, 49-37, Saturday Night in Tallahassee. Very impressive. I didn’t know that quarterback E.J. Manuel was that good, but he is. Good kid, too. Really seems to have a good head on his shoulders. Throws it well in the pocket and can really run it. They’ve got a couple of awesome backs in James Wilder, Jr. and senior Chris Thompson. Thompson really looks like an NFL running back to me. He’s fantastic. He’s smaller but tough and has electric speed. Had a beautiful TD run of about 28 yards Saturday Night and I believe he had another pretty significant distance run (20+) that was called back for holding. Clemson scores a lot of points on everybody. They have great playmakers both in the backfield and on the perimeter, a fine quarterback in Tajh Boyd, and an excellent offensive coordinator in Chad Morris, who’s done tremendous things with Boyd and their offense. But Clemson can’t play enough defense. They should have a solid season though. FSU should run the table until they meet up with Florida in Tallahassee. If the game were played today, they’d win. But Florida is a team that is getting better and better every week and they could be outstanding by the end of the season. Of course, Florida will have had to play LSU and South Carolina at home (fortunate) and Georgia at the Cocktail Party in Jacksonville, which is pretty fortunate, too, that it’s a neutral site and those two teams don’t go home and home. So Florida may be in good shape for most all of their games. Still like Georgia over Florida though. Like FSU over them too at this point.

Georgia just massacred Vanderbilt Saturday Night. They’re for real. They host UT Saturday and they should win that, but then they go to South Carolina Oct. 6 in an epic SEC war. I like Georgia to go up to Columbia and get the job done. Not only are they extraordinarily talented already, but also two of their best defensive players, safety Bacarri Rambo and linebacker Alex Ogletree, are returning from suspensions this weekend. I guess Spurrier was right when he said he’d rather play Georgia at the beginning of the season when they’ve got some suspensions. I don’t know if it would matter if these guys played or not, but they’re excellent players so it will certainly help the ‘Dawgs’ cause. Linebacker Jarvis Jones is a beast. Potential top pick in the draft. Certainly top five. And Aaron Murray has saved his best football for this year. He is playing out of his mind. Todd Gurley, their freshman tailback, is a flat out stud. Keith Marshall is right there with him. Marshall is another freshman. I like Georgia playing Alabama in the championship game. Of course, you can never account for injuries–they can happen to key players and really mess up your season–so that could play a role in any of these team’s fortunes. But right now, like ‘Bama, Florida Sate and Georgia as the elite teams.

I’ve got K State, Stanford and Notre Dame as darkhorses. I haven’t seen enough of Texas, but I think they’re pretty good. The Big Ten has been a disaster, at least with the power teams. Ohio State isn’t eligible for a bowl game,  and even if they were, they’d get killed in a BCS bowl if they played an elite team. The Blazers gave them a good game, and taking nothing away from the Blazers– they gave great effort– but Ohio State is nothing special. Their quarterback, Braxton Miller, is all hyped up by the media, but frankly, he’s overrated. Good athlete, but he can’t win you a championship. Michigan State has no offense and Wisconsin is down. MIchigan State is playing Ohio State Saturday in an interesting game nationally. Trying to figure out which offense is worse so I can pick it accurately. Both pretty bad. MSU has a pretty good defense so I like Mark Dantonio over Urb. Hope Urb doesn’t quit if he loses. We don’t need another soap opera this year Urb. Try to hang in there. Michigan is terrible. Northwestern the only team that’s impressed me in that league, not because they’re ultra talented, but just the way they play. They battle for 60 minutes  and never quit. They’re the darkhorse in that league.

K State’s win over Oklahoma on Saturday at Norman was incredible. Bill Snyder, along with Jimbo Fisher, in my book, is right up there behind S as one of the best coaches in the country. Snyder just gets more out of his talent than any coach I’ve ever seen in college football. K State shocked OU at home. K State’s qb Collin Klein might, and I mean might, be a third string qb in the NFL next year, if he gets picked up by a team that wants a kid who is loaded with character and competitiveness. NFL aside, he is one heckuva college quarterback. What a competitor. I just love Snyder and company.

I’ve already talked about how impressed I am with David Shaw and his Stanford bunch. They play hard-nosed, smash-mouth football. Just like the Green Bay Packers used to play the game when they dominated, or the great Steelers teams, or the Cowboys or some of the teams under Bear. They just come out and physically whip you on the line of scrimmage and their running back, Stepfan Taylor, is a horse. He’s a starter in the NFL in the future. Quarterback play is pretty solid post-Luck. Josh Nunes is doing a good job and a had a fine game in Stanford’s 21-14 victory over USC. Still have to play @ Oregon.  Oregon looks like a bunch of Ninja Turtles out there playing the game in those uniforms those puke green jerseys. They’re extremely fast; lightning fast actually. De’Anthony Thomas and Kenjon Barner are world class burners at running back. It’s a potent offensive attack. But I still don’t think they’re physical enough on defense. I know they shut out a supposedly high scoring Arizona team Saturday Night, but I watched a lot of it and they just aren’t a dominating team. I think a power team like Alabama, FSU or Georgia would handle them. Stanford may pull it off. Have to see how the Cardinal keep progressing. I like Stanford if they can stick with Oregon’s speed. Oregon may be too fast for them, but I sure like the way Stanford plays the game better. They’ll meet Nov.17 in a huge game at Eugene, Oregon.

TCU and Texas are two other teams to watch for. Need to watch more on TCU, but Gary Patterson has a proven track record with a Rose Bowl victory over a very good Wisconsin team on Jan.1, 2011, the 2010 season. He’s had some solid seasons to go along with that crowning jewell. He’s the real deal and his team may be for real again this year. Still not sold onTexas. They beat Ole Miss pretty easily, but I’d like to see the Tide against Ole Miss and watch another Texas game before I say Texas is in the discussion. They do look pretty solid though. LSU looks good not great. Offensive line hurt by some injuries against Auburn. Talented, but typical Miles teams. The chemistry is just not there. Believe the Tide will take care of business in Baton Rouge.

Finally, Kiehl Frazier is a disaster as I’ve said before. That’s all you can say about him. Auburn played too well on defense to lose that game. Chizik punted when he should have gone for it on fourth and one. A couple of the other fourth downs that Scarbinsky pointed out, I thought Chizik did the right thing in punting. Field position was critical in that game and the defense was playing very well. Should have gone for it on fourth and one though. That was a big mistake. But on those fourth and sevens, fourth and elevens, there was no trust in Frazier. What do you do when your quarterback can’t throw a seven yard pass and have a high risk of an interception which would probably lose the game. I thought two of those fourth down decisions were OK. Frazier’s like the replacement refs. He’s totally clueless. Give Clint Moseley a shot. Or something needs to be done to give this kid something he can run effectively. What’s a shame is there are receivers who can catch the ball downfield and make plays once they catch it, but Frazier can’t get it to them.

I did think Brian VanGorder had the defense ready to play. They played hard, aggressively and well. Very impressed with Dee Ford and Corey Lemonier. They played physically and they attacked. Thought the secondary did some good things as well. No problem with the job VanGorder did. The defense was prepared and performed. Linebacker needs to get better, but everybody else was good. Frazier will be the reason for this teams’ demise, but I’m not sure if there are any other options. Wallace looks like an athlete, but I don’t think he can throw much. Not sure what’s going on with Moseley. His shoulder must be the issue. Surely they’ll try him against Arkansas if Frazier stays abysmal. They have to. The season is going down the drain, so Chizik and Loeffler need to try something else. The Frazier project is a total failure.

These guys must go

Roger Goodell (left), the owners,  the league officials, and even the players must settle with the regular officials. It’s out of hand.

That’s it. Last straw. I was giving these replacement refs a little more of a benefit of the doubt until this colossal debacle tonight in Seattle. Green Bay won that game. Seattle had no business winning. Green Bay had already intercepted Russell Wilson in Seattle territory late in the fourth quarter to seal the game, but the stupid ref called some bogus late hit on Green Bay which was a clean shot on the quarterback right after he released it; almost simultaneously as he released it. Still after the Packers proved for 59:48 of play they were the superior team, they finished it off. At least it looked like they did. Wilson threw up a prayer from 24 yards away on the last play of the game and the Green Bay defensive back, M.D. Jennings, intercepted it. There was a struggle in the end zone for the ball in the end zone but Jennings had his arms around the ball and had it secured when he and Seattle wide receiver Golden Tate hit the turf. Tate had his hands on the ball and was trying to wrestle it away simultaneously, and it looked close coming down, but I thought in fast motion Jennings had it. And in slow motion, Jennings definitely had it. It was an interception and the Pack won the game. The back judge starting waving his arms above his head like he was about to signal an interception, but this other clown came in and called it a touchdown. The backjudge had the best look at it. That joker came out of nowhere and made that call.  The replay clearly showed that Jennings had possession of the ball. But the idiots even got to look at it on replay from different angles and couldn’t get it right. I think they were scared to call it against Seattle for fear of being harmed physically by the Seattle fans and maybe even some of Seattle players. It would have taken some guts, but it was the right thing to do. Aaron Rodgers and the Pack were shellshocked. They had no idea what to do. Now if you say anything to these clowns you get fined. I know these guys are trying they’re best but they’re just not measuring up to the standard this game needs. This just can’t go on. This could cost the Packers the playoffs if it comes down to it at the end in the division of the wild care. Green Bay is a very good team, but it’s tough to win in the NFL any week. Every win is invaluable. Home field advantage is invaluable. For the Packers, if they make the playoffs–which they’re certainly good enough to but there are no guarantees– this could take away their home field advantage. These replacements refs are ruining the games right now. It’s not their fault. They’re just not qualified and the refs and the NFL need to reach an agreement.

The owners are just going to have to suck it up and pay these regular guys what they want. I know there are issues that need to be ironed out and I’m sure the league and the owners have very good arguments for docking the pensions of these guys and for the other issues they’re at odds on with the refs  that we in the general public are not fully informed of. The regular refs want to keep their pension intact and the owners want to lower it significantly which is what is happening in the general market and how a lot of NFL employees have agreed to. But the owners have offered to up the refs compensation. It seems like the NFL is making concessions, but these refs won’t budge on their demands. I don’t like unions for the most part. They can protect people at times from abuse by dishonest management but they can also be destructive. Maybe  the players will be so fed up with  this that they’ll try to chip in and help solve this critical problem. Wish we could fire these striking refs, but that won’t work. We’ve got to get them back. There has to be resolution on the league’s part. The striking officials have to be distraught with the way these games are being destroyed by incompetency. Fights all over the field; it’s chaos. The players could help this situation themselves by offering to chip in $5K or $10K some of their exorbitant salaries. Maybe the Manning brothers, Drew Brees, Tom Brady and the other very wealthy players could get together and chip in a chunk and go in with the owners and get this mess resolved. That was a travesty tonight. Inexcusable. The league can’t have this happen any more. They MUST settle with  these refs for the good of the game.

Brandt Snedeker captures Tour Championship for close friend

Sneds shot 68, 70, 64, 68. -10 for the tournament to capture the Tour Championship and the $10 million Fed Ex Cup bonus along with the $1.440 million dollar check that goes with winning the tournament. But it wasn’t about the money to Brandt. He saw what pressure was earlier in the day with his friend Tucker Anderson hanging on for his life after being involved in a near fatal car accident two weeks ago in Pensacola, Fl. This was about Brandt being the best he could be for Tucker Anderson, who is in the Shepherd Center in Atlanta, a renowned brain and spinal cord rehabilitation hospital. More on that in a minute.
Justin Rose was second at -7. Rory and Tiger not really factors on Sunday. Brandt doubled the par-3 sixth, and Steve Sands of NBC/Golf Channel was reporting that if McIlroy finished third and Sneds finished second, Rory would win the Cup. But Snedeker leveled the ship and finished with four more birdies. Snedeker was second in driving accuracy for the tournament. He  averaged 294 off the tee (18th). He was hitting a high cut off the tee and it was working to perfection. Sneds led the tournament in strokes gained putting, a stat that has proven to be pivotal at the Tour Championship. Last year’s winner of the tournament and the Cup, Bill Haas, also led the tournament in strokes gained putting. Brandt was second in putts per round. He had 25 on Sunday. Driving and putting are two of the major keys to the game. Chipping pretty important as well. Brandt chipped in for birdie on 17 to take a four shot lead. That was as clutch as it gets. It was reminiscent of the Tom-Watson chip in the 1982 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach. Watson said to his caddie, the late Bruce Edwards, before he chipped on the 17th hole that, “I’m not going to get it close, I’m going to make it.” Right on cue, Tom did it and won over Jack Nicklaus, one of his eight majors. Sneds showed that same clutchness yesterday on 17 at East Lake. Looked like a sand wedge that he kind of got a little air under and let run into the cup. it was electrifying.  A key part of of Brandt’s game recently has been his chipping. He’s really improved in that part of his game. Must have put a lot of hard work into it. Wow that was awesome.

The story behind this victory is that Brandt’s good friend, Tucker Anderson, a 19-year old freshman at West Florida University who plays on the golf team, was in a car wreck Sept.7 in Pensacola and sustained a serious brain trauma injury. He has full movement of his limbs luckily though, but cannot communicate verbally. Tucker’s dad, Todd, is Brandt’s long time swing coach.  Todd teaches at Sea Island (Ga.)Golf Club. Tucker and Brandt are very tight. Brandt went to visit Tucker on yesterday morning at the Shepherd Center. Tucker was happy to see Brandt as was Brandt to see Tucker. Brandt asked Tucker, “Do you think I can beat Rory McIlroy today?”  Tucker responded with a wink. This had to be exciting for Tucker as well. Surely it had to have been uplifing and could have played a small role in his recovery.  Brandt considers Tucker like a little brother. Brandt put the importance of golf in perspective. He’s serious about it, it’s his job, but he knows it pales in comparison to his friend surviving a car accident and continuing on with a successful life.

Another compelling part of Brandt’s victory is that his dad, Larry, had a liver transplant last year due to liver cancer. Larry attended only Brandt’s second tournament ever yesterday. Must have been a powerful moment for Brandt seeing his father there after he rolled in the two-footer for victory. Brandt also is expecting his second child in October. He will be a boy joining 18-month old Lily and wife Mandy in the Snedeker family.

In shooting 64 on Saturday, Brandt hit 17 out of 18 greens in regulation. Quite a display of golf pulled off by Snedeker. If there was any doubt about Davis Love’s selection of Sneds for the Ryder Cup, that was erased yesterday. Brandt, to me, is the best putter in the world, so if he’s hitting his driver in the fairway, which he was doing for the entire tournament, and getting it on the green in regulation, like he did on Saturday, he’s hard to beat. His putting stroke is interesting. He makes a couple of quick runs at it in practicing and then takes kind of a jab stroke. It’s kind of a throwback. Johnny Miller compared it to Billy Casper’s stroke. Casper won multiple majors.

What compelling drama. This Fed Ex Cup has taken golf to another level of excitement. Just fantastic stuff.

Now onto the Ryder Cup at Medinah. Maybe the most important competition of the year for players in both the U.S. and Europe. I know the majors are crucial, but this is such a patriotic event. It’s powerful stuff. Can’t wait for it. Will have a preview on Thursday. Can the U.S. get the cup back from the European team? Should be dramatic. The singles matches on Sunday are must-see TV. ESPN televises all day Friday, and NBC takes over Saturday and Sunday. The pressure is tremendous and  the camaraderie unlike any other competition in sports. So much national pride at stake. The Europeans take this very seriously and have clutch guys like Graeme McDowell, Rory and Sergio, who is very tough in this competition. They want to beat the Americans so badly. We’re going to have to match their intensity.

The U.S. counters with Brandt, Tiger, Dustin Johnson, Matt Kuchar and Phil among others. There are some good putters on this U.S. team with Brandt, Kuchar, JIm Furyk and Steve Stricker. Should be highly compelling. The epic duel begins Friday at 8 AM ET/ 7 CT on ESPN. Saturday’s coverage on NBC starts at 9 AM ET/8 CT, and Sunday’s coverage begins at Noon ET/11 AM CT.

Brandt, etc.

Shot 68, 70, 64, 68. -10 for the tournament. Justin Rose second at -7. Was a little worried early when Brandt doubled the par-3 sixth, and Steve Sands of NBC/Golf Channel was reporting that if Rory finished third and Brandt finished second, Rory would win the Cup. Just such a rich, compelling story for Brandt. Will tell you about it in a minute. Brandt was second in driving accuracy for the tournament, he averaged 294 off the tee (18th) and led the tournament in strokes gained putting. Second in putts per round. Had 25 today. Driving and putting name of the game. Chipping pretty important as well. Brandt chipped in for birdie on 17 to take a four shot lead. That was highly clutch. Looked like a Tom Watson moment when before he chipped on the 17th at Pebble in I believe it was the ’82 United States Open, he told his caddie, “I’m not going to get it close, I’m going to make it.” Sure enough, Tom did and won the U.S. Open. Brandt showed the same clutchness.  Brandt chips so well. He’s really improved in that part of his game. Must have put a lot of hard work into it. Wow that was awesome..

The story behind this is that Brandt’s good friend, Tucker Anderson, a freshman in college at West Florida who plays on the the West Florida golf team, was in a car wreck Sept.7 in Pensacola and sustained a serious brain trauma injury. He has full movement of his limbs luckily though.. Tucker’s dad, Todd, is Brandt’s long time swing coach.  Tood teaches at Sea Island (Ga.)Golf Club. Tucker and Brandt are very tight. Tucker was not communicating verbally and is in the Shepard Center in Atlanta recovering from his injuries where Brandt visited him this morning. Tucker was happy to see him and Tucker responded to Brandt’s question, “Do you think I can beat Rory McIlroy?” with a wink. Great stuff. I know Brandt is hopeful and prayerful for Tucker’s speedy recovery. This had to be exciting for Tucker as well. Surely had to have been uplifing. Brandt consider Tucker like a little brother. Another compelling part of this tremendous victory for Brandt was his father, Larry, who had a liver transplant last year after having liver cancer, was there to see Brand win the Cup. Also, Brandt’s wife, Mandy, is expecting their second child in October. He will be a boy joining Lily, who will be 18 months in October.
Great stuff for the whole family and Tucker. Just can’t tell you how proud I am for B. That was special. Now onto Medinah. Man, is this going to be a blast next weekend. Should be a powerfully compelling  competition with so much national and personal pride at stake. Will be thrilling and pressure filled for both teams. More on the Cup later in the week. Will have full preview on regular blog. Will send out a link.
Bears won 23-6 today over Rams. Major Wright with an int for a TD. It was a beautiful play by Tim Jennings to knock it away and Major to make the pick and take it back 45 yards for the clinching score. Jay 17-of-31 for 183 yards and no TDs with one int. Earl caught one pass for 11 yards. D.J. Moore had an excellent game. D.J. was very active and had some outstanding tackles. Chris Williams played a little bit. O line did a decent job. Getting better. Next Monday Night at Dallas in Jerry World. Our defense was terrific today.
Rays defeat Blue Jays, 3-0. Even Longoria (Longo) with a two-run double in the bottom of the 8th to clinch it. Fernando Rodney picked up his 44th save in 46 chances. Yankees lost to the A’s, so A’s still 3 1/2 up on Rays in wild card. Dave goes Tuesday Night at Boston, our next game. A’s play at Texas for four beginning tomorrow night. Rangers have a lot to play for so they’ll be focused. A’s only four back of them in the AL West and home field advantage in playoffs is at stake. Two up on Yanks now. Angels ahead of the Rays by a game in wild card, too, so Rays need to win out pretty much; can’t afford more than one loss. Angels another hurdle. Angels host Seattle for three Tues-Thurs, then play at Texas over the weekend. Rays play Bosox Tuesday and Wed, then go to White Sox for four beginning Thursday Night. Finish off next Monday-Wed with the Orioles at home. Could be a very important series if things work out well for the Rays. Braves won again, 2-1. Not over till it’s over, but looking good right now. Six up on second place Cards and eight ahead of third place Milwaukee.I know Braves want to win wild card outright. That would give them home field for the one game play-in wild card game. Only four and a half back of Nationals now also. Braves host Miami Tues-Thurs, then Mets come to town for the weekend. Then Braves go to Bucs next week. Nats at Philly Tues-Thurs of this week, then at St. Louis for the weekend, then finish off the season at home vs. Phils. Bucs won today. Pretty much out of it, but still playing for pride.

Tiger and the record

Tiger, in my opinion, was the greatest player of all time starting in 2000 and continuing through the U.S. Open in 2008. The scandal rocked his world, shocked the country and also the rest of the world. A perceived hero fell on very hard times. Now he’s fighting to get back to where he once was. The big question is will he catch Jack at 18 majors and can he pass him? Tiger is at 14. He is 36 and will be 37 in December. He noted Jack won the ’86 Masters at the age of 46. Using that math, Tiger will have 40 more chances, beginning at next year’s Masters, to get four, and possibly five more. I’d put his chances at 50 percent right now. If he doesn’t get one next year, that percentage drops to 45, and will continue to decline as the years progress and he’s major-less. He’s not the dominant player he once was. From  200o  all the way to 2008 he was virtually unstoppable. The competition was intimidated by him; scared really. That’s not the case today. Maybe it’s kind of a good thing actually. He’s a nicer guy, and that is a very good thing. He was drug through the mud by the media and many in the public for his highly dishonorable acts to his wife and his children. Some of it was richly deserved; some may have been over the line. It has humbled him and made him a better person. He’s more patient with the media, and nicer to the fans, more respectful of them and appreciative of them. He should be and I’m  liking that about him. That is a very likeable quality. He’s still got a fiercely competitive spirit; it’s just tougher out there than it used to be. With Rory a superstar, guys like Dustin Johnson, Keegan Bradley, Nick Watney, Bubba Watson, Rickie Fowler, Hunter Mahan and Brandt Snedeker along with the veterans like the always solid Jim Furyk, who leads the tour championship, and despite what some say, should definitely have been a captain’s pick for the Ryder Cup, Phil and  Ernie, there’s a deep field out there. There are so many others who can win any given weekend. So it’s definitely tougher sledding for Tiger than it used to be.
In 2000, he was the greatest golfer that ever lived. He kept it up through most of that decade. Can he get it back? That’s a tough question. His swing is not reliable right now and he’s not the same putter he was five, 10 years ago. That may have come with age. The putts that always fell when he was 25 are not falling now that he’s 36.

But it’s still enjoyable to watch him compete. I like the person Tiger Woods has become and is still evolving into. I hope he sees his kids a lot and can provide them with fatherly guidance and support. They need that from him. I’d like to see him win a major next year and make it even more interesting in his chase for Jack’s coveted 18. He plays Augusta so well having won there four times. Next year’s Masters will be the 77th playing of the event. Tiger always has a shot at Augusta. The 113th  U.S. Open is at the famed Merion Golf Club in Pennsylvania, which has hosted United States Opens before.  The 146th Open Championship is at Muirfield next year, and the 95th PGA will be held at Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, New York. Certainly some good opportunities for Eldrick Tiger Woods.

He’s still got time. The question is: will he have that drive to reach Jack’s record? I think he still does. He still seems like he cares a lot, and I know he wants that record. He’s an intensely hard worker. He’s still a type A competitor, which is a good thing in many ways. But he’s also humbled, and while some may say that will hold him back, I’d say you know what that’s OK. He can be a nicer guy and still win. There are a lot of nice guys who win; who are intense competitors. The great ones rally back from tough times. Tiger certainly still has greatness. He’s shown it this year with wins at the Arnie Invitational, the Memorial and the AT&T with some brilliant play. Those are courses that he’s owned through the years, but you still have to win’em. That’s not easy by any stretch of the imagination. Still think 50 percent is reasonable for Tiger and Jack’s record. Get a Masters next year and the percentage increases by five to eight percent, maybe even 10. Heck, knowing him he could get more than one. There is a still a lot of greatness left. Thirty six is not old even by golf standards.

What I like most though is his humility. He’s a better person now than he once was. And that is definitely a good thing.

Alabama needs to keep progressing; AU a huge underdog

Ha Ha Clinton-Dix playing lights out

S’s “process” will be in the works once again this weekend. Alabama just needs to be the best Alabama it can be this weekend. The line needs to block, the running backs need to keep improving, A.J. and the receivers need a good game and the defense, well can they get any better? They can, but they’re very good right now. The dline can get a better pass rush and they need to keep being as opportunistic as they have been at linebacker and in the secondary. They’re looks like there are at least four or five first rounders on this defense when they come out; maybe more. Arkansas was very impressive. Three new guys who stood out to me were Amari Cooper, Kenyan Drake and Xzavier Dickson. Dickson has been good all fall camp and into this season. He could become a force this year rushing the passer. Looks like he’s on his way at defensive end/outside linebacker. Cooper had a couple of catches last week against the Hogs and looked very impressive in doing it. He’s loaded with talent and will be a productive and explosive player for the Tide. And it looks like he’ll do that this year. Really like Cooper. Drake just plays well every time he gets in there at running back. He needs to get in the rotation now that Jalston Fowler is out for the season. Drake has been coming in the latter part of games, but he’s been so impressive in the carries that he’s gotten, that he may force S and Nuss to play him. Those three to me look like they could add a lot of production to an outstanding football team. Mel Kiper told the Birmingham News yesterday that he thought Alabama was “overrated”, that they hadn’t played anybody. Maybe they haven’t played anybody that great yet–though Arkansas has some good SEC athletes and Michigan has some good athletes– but you can’t argue with the talent on this football team or the results. They’ve faced the challenges in front of them and passed every test so far. There is no doubt this is an excellent football team. Two other guys who were expected to be good and have lived up to expectations and some are Ha Ha Clinton-Dix and Vinnie Sunseri. Just stellar safeties for this defense. Dee Milliner has even been better than anticipated and Deion Belue is doing a nice job at corner. The linebackers are so good, but almost under appreciated because of the overall talent on the defense. But C.J. Mosley, Nico Johnson and Trey Depriest, along with Adrian Hubbard, whose more of a hybrid defensive end, are all terrific. Just an excellent, excellent football team. The sky’s the limit for A.J. and the line looks like at least three of them (Chance Warmack, D.J. Fluker and Barrett Jones) will be in the first or early second round. Cyrus Kounadijo has a couple of years left, but he looks like a first rounder when he comes out.

Alabama, LSU and Florida State look elite to me, though Florida State hasn’t played anybody yet this year. Florida State’s quarterback, E.J. Manuel, struggles in big games at times. We’ll see how he does against Clemson tomorrow night. Should be a pretty classic game there if Clemson can just play some defense. Clemson will have Sammy Watkins back so that should make them even more prolific on offense. FSU is better on defense so that should give them the edge. LSU looks extremely strong. Their running game is terrific and quarterback Zach Mettenberger looks like the real deal. Their receivers aren’t great, but they’re serviceable, and will keep getting better. Have a very fine defense even without the Honey Badger. Very good front seven and some fine dbs. If ‘Bama and LSU can get through the next month and a half, Nov.3 promises to be epic in Baton Rouge. Oregon has a lot of speed, and are a very athletic team,  but still don’t think they play enough defense to keep up with ‘Bama, LSU and Florida State. Really like Stanford. They played some power football in defeating USC last week, 21-14. They pound you with some big offensive linemen and running back Stepfan Taylor. Taylor’s terrific. Looks like an NFL back to me. Quarterback Josh Nunes is coming along pretty nicely in place of Andrew Luck. Did a nice job throwing the ball last week after some early struggles. Stanford sacked USC quarterback Matt Barkley four times. It was just total domination by their defensive line. Stanford is for real. And they are really recruiting. This present 2012 freshmen class have quite a few four-stars and three, five-stars. They have got it going in Palo Alto on “The Farm.”

Notre Dame pretty impressive to me, too. Nice win over Michigan State. The interview after the game with linebacker Manti Te’o was powerful. Te’o lost both his girlfriend (to leukemia) and his grandmother last week. It was a very emotional interview after the game with ABC’s Heather Cox. What a class kid and a fantastic football player. So composed yet very emotional after the game. He’s special. Notre Dame is in an important contest with Michigan tomorrow night. Kansas State at Oklahoma in another important national tilt. I kind of like Kansas State to pull off the upset. In the SEC, Mizzou at SC should be interesting. Who knows what to expect from AU this week? It’ll be tough. The two questions to me are: 1. Can Kiehl Frazier become a productive quarterback in the SEC one day? And, 2. Can this defense live up to the potential it should have? If Auburn can make some strides in that direction tomorrow, that would be a boost going forward.

This week’s predictions.

Last week: 11-4. Overall: 29-13 (69%).

Florida Atlantic @ No.1 Alabama

Where: Bryant-Denny Stadium

Time: 4 PM CT

TV: Pay Per View; ESPN Game Plan

LIne: ‘Bama 49 1/2

FAU has a pretty decent tailback in Damian Fortner who’s run for 123 yards. He’s averaging 4.6 yards per carry and a touchdown. Quarterback Graham Wilbert has completed 68% of his passes for 569 yards and four scores, and wide receiver William Dukes has 12 catches for 162 yards (13.5 average). But this is about Alabama’s progress moving forward. You always respect your opponent, which is something S always does. You never overlook anybody. But Georgia beat FAU 56-20 last week, so the Tide is fine here. ‘Bama just needs to be the best it can be, keep the running game going with Eddie, T.J. and maybe Kenyan Drake, and the line and A.J. need to do their jobs. A.J. has really been spreading it out to the receivers. It’s a solid group which could become explosive as the season progresses. Guys like Christion Jones, DeAndrew White and Amari Cooper look like will be big play guys for the Tide. Kevin Norwood is the leader, and is fairly explosive as well and always dependable. See the Tide with a warmup before getting back into the heart of SEC play with Ole Miss at home, then, after a week off, at Missouri, at Tennessee, State at home then a trip to Baton Rouge. This keeps them tuned up for the upcoming SEC wars.

No.2 LSU @ Auburn

Where: Jordan-Hare Stadium, Pat Dye Field

Game time: 6 PM CT

TV: ESPN

Line: LSU 20 1/2

AU just doesn’t have enough horses here. Kiehl Frazier is just not there. Hopefully, he will get some confidence and live up to his potential at some point this season. He just has to stop making mistakes and also make some plays to help his team have success. The running game will be relied on heavily in this game. Tre Mason and Onterio McCalebb will be asked to carry the rock a lot in this game, so they have to produce. The Oline will have to find a way to outphysical a very physical defense. And the AU defense has GOT to get better. The pass defense is 65th in the country out of 124 teams, and the rush defense is in the 100’s. Brian VanGorder’s Atlanta Falcons’ defense last year was 12th in the NFL. He had very fine defenses at Georgia, so you know he’s got the skills to build a good defense. For some reason, these guys aren’t responding. Everybody was blaming Ted Roof last year, but VanGorder hasn’t had any better success. It’s just as bad as last year. Maybe this weekend the defense makes a turn for the better. LSU is running back U. Kenny Hilliard has run for 305 yards (8.2 average) and six TDs. Alfred Blue has rushed for 275 (6.8 average) and 2 TDs. Michael Ford, maybe their fastest running back, is another highly skilled, explosive back. Spencer Ware, who was their starter last year, is now fourth string; and he’s a heckuva football player. They just keep throwing the backs at you. Blue is out for this game with an ankle injury. Zach Mettenberger could be a game manager and still win. But he’s a lot more than that. He’s a pure passer. He’s completed 73 percent of his passes with 2 ints and four TDs. LSU doesn’t need to throw it a lot, but when they do, Metternberger is fantastic, so much better than what they had last year in Jordan Jefferson and Jarrett Lee. It’s going to be a tough day for AU. Can they win? I wish I could give my Auburn readers some hope. There’s always a chance when you’re at home. Kiehl Frazier has to be markedly better, and so does the defense. Auburn has to run the ball well to take pressure off of Frazier and allow him to play action and make plays to some of his talented receivers, Lutz and Emory Blake, who need to get the ball more and Quan Bray and Sammie Coates. You never know, but it’s not likely.

Other games:

Missouri @ No.7 South Carolina

TV: 2:30 PM CT on CBS

Line: South Carolina by 10

Could be an interesting matchup here. Mizzou quarterback James Franklin will test the stout Gamecocks defense. SC quarterback Connor Shaw has been beaten up this year. Spurrier keeps throwing him out there though. Don’t know if this kid can make it an entire season with how many licks he’s taking and he’s just not a big guy. Marcus Lattimore should have a good day against the Missouri defense. Like the South Carolina defense and Lattimore to get it done tomorrow. Maybe Lattimore can keep the heat off Shaw, but Spurrier still likes to throw it around a little bit, so Shaw will take some hits.

South Carolina 28, Missouri 20

Vandy @Georgia

TV: 6:45 PM CT, ESPN2

Line: Georgia 16

Vanderbilt plays really hard, but they just don’t have the talent to stack up with the ‘Dawgs. ‘Dawgs look really good and defensive end/linebacker Jarvis Jones is back this week. No word on whether safety Bacarri Rambo or linebacker Alec Ogletree will play. They were supposed to be suspended for four games, but Richt may lift those suspensions because of the bad blood between Georgia and Vandy after last year’s confrontation between defensive coordinator Todd Grantham and Vandy head man James Franklin. That was out of control. The ‘Dawgs are very confident as usual. Vandy scrappy. They  just don’t have enough firepower.

‘Dawgs, 38, Vandy 17

Kentucky @ Florida

TV: 11:21 AM CT on SEC Network (Channel 21 in Birmingham)

LIne: Gators by 24

Gators will be playing their second and third string by the latter part of the third quarter. Gators looking very strong this year with an excellent defense and their quarterback, Jeff Driskel, looks highly adept at running the offense. He can pass it pretty well and he’s big and athletic and can really run. Kentucky a disaster. The natives are getting restless in Lexington. Joker Phillips’ tenure as head coach is skating on thin ice. Basketball season can’t get here quickly enough for some Kentuckians if not all of them.

Five who can win

This should be a classic weekend as all 30 players have a shot at winning the Fed Ex Cup and the $10m bonus that goes with it. Any of the top five, Rory, Tiger, Nick Watney, Phil or Brandt Snedeker can win it with a victory this weekend. The other 25 have a shot if they win, but they’ll need some help. Now that the PGA resets the points after the BMW Championship it gives everyone a shot. A guy from the PGA told me that when Vijay won it in 2008, he had already clinched the cup before the Tour Championship. The PGA rep compared it to the Braves winning a seven-game playoff series in five and then playing the last two games out. It takes the fun and drama out of it.
Rory was around three thousand points ahead of Tiger in the rankings after the BMW and you think, wow, Rory deserves it. That’s an interesting debate. But this makes it much more thrilling and gives everyone in the field a shot. I guess you could say you have to earn it in the playoffs throughout. Rory still in position to win it if he gets a second and another guy out of the top five wins it, so he does have the edge there.

Next week is just as big if not bigger with the Ryder Cup going to Medinah Country Club, one of the famed golf courses in the country which has hosted quite a few majors. That’s when the players are competing for their countries without any money involved; just national pride. It’s going to be terrific theater.

Here are five guys whom I like to get it done this weekend with the winner at the bottom.

1. Tiger Woods:

Driving the ball very well, playing wel in general. If he can putt well, has a very good chance to capture his third Fed Ex Cup after winning in 2007 and 2009.

2. Rory McIlroy:

This is a given. Won three of the last four events he’s played in, including the PGA and the Deutsche Bank and BMW. Rory could be one of the all-time greats before he’s through. Everything is working in his game. Long, accurate, terrific iron player, and an excellent putter when he’s got the flat stick going. Very well could win this thing.

3.Phil:

Playing tremendous golf. T-2 at BMW. That claw grip he’s using now with his putter is really working for him. Phil is hitting his driver pretty solidly. This seems to be an important driving course, so if he’s on with his driver, three-wood and whatever else he uses off the tee, he could be in the winner’s circle on Sunday. Feel good about his putting. His chipping has always been exceptional.

4. Brandt Snedeker:

Brandt leads the tour in strokes gained putting, and that is a very significant stat in this tournament. Three out of the last four winners have been in the top five in strokes gained putting. Bill Haas, who won the Tour Championship and the Cup last year, led the field in that category. Brandt is an exceptional putter, so if he can drive  the ball well, and give himself opportunities with his approaches, I like his chances.

5. Louis Oosthuizen:

He drives it so well and putts well, too. Very solid player, who can get hot and really go low. He doesn’t practice a lot, which may hurt him in these big tournaments. Says his family and his farm are more important to him. If he really focused on his game he could be a multiple major winner. Always like the South Africans. They’ve become the new Asians in mental toughness. Louis hits it a ton and is accurate. It’ll come down to the greens like it will for everybody else.

Two others who have a good shot:

1. Dustin Johnson:

His game is in great shape and he’s been in the hunt throughout these playoffs. Has all the tools for greatness. Just needs to finish the job once he’s in the mix.

2.Jason Dufner:

Tremendously accurate off the tee. He’s not terrific with the putter always, but when he is, he’s elite. Certainly in the conversation.

Should be an awesome weekend. It’ll be hard to do it all as far as watching the Tout Champ and football, but will certainly be tuned in all weekend. Alabama plays at 5 PM ET/4/CT and Auburn plays at 7 PMET/6 CT, so it’ll work out for plenty of viewing of this tremendous event. Sunday will be glued in what should be riveting golf with lots of drama and excitement.

The winner:

Philip Alfred Mickelson:

Just like where Phil is with his game right now. Playing so well. Likes playing in Georgia. Won the Masters in 2004, 2006 and 2010 to go along with his PGA in 2005. Phillip likes the big stage. Raises his game in these big events, and this event is similar to a major with what’s at stake. See Phil taking home the Cup and the extremely generous bonus money that goes along with it before setting out to help the U.S. regain the Cup from the Europeans, who won it in 2010. This promises to be  scintillating. Can’t wait for this tournament to start. East Lake will be electric.

Picks this week, 9-15-12

(Barrett Jones and line will try to improve this week; they should.)

Sorry there’s no more analysis on the blog today. Fighting a viral infection and just didn’t see a major need for elaboration this week. Tide should roll, even if Tyler Wilson plays; which is a real unknown. Wilson took a beating last week against La. Monroe. I don’t see how he’ll be ready this week. They had some other pretty bad injuries too, that will hamper their defense. Arkansas still not good enough on defense, and without Wilson, they’re not too swift on offense. Wilson definitely out vs. Bama now.

Auburn, if Frazier can do anything, and the defense can stop La Monroe’s qb, Kolton Browning, from running and sometimes throwing all over them, should win this week. I guess. Frazier is just not getting it done and neither is the defense. They should be able to outlast La Monroe possibly. La Monroe beat an Arkansas team that lost its star quarterback for the entire second half, but still the Hogs took a 28-7 lead. They just took their foot off the accelerator and La Monroe kept fighting. Really competed. They’re scrappy.

Big game it looks like now is in Knoxville with Gators visiting Vols. Like the way Vols are playing offense with Tyler Bray and wide receivers Cordarrelle Patterson and Justin Hunter. Need to be able to run the ball, too. They have talent in the backfield. Offensive line much improved. Their defense has also improved. Not convinced Muschamp has the Gators back. Gators still make a lot of mental mistakes, penalties and turnovers.

Missouri in an interesting contest with Arizona State. Has all the looks of  an offensive shootout at home against Rich Rod and the Sun Devils. Arizona State defeated Illinois last week, 45-14, so Missouri, coming off it’s hard-fought, deflating loss to Georgia, will have to be prepared for a war.

Georgia and LSU should win big over Florida Atlantic and the Idaho Vandals respectively. South Carolina hosting Blazers. Would love to see the Blazers give’em a competitive game and have a chance. South Carolina not great on offense, Connor Shaw is the better quarterback, but Dylan Thompson did a pretty good job against East Carolina. But it was East Carolina. May rest Shaw again this week and play Thompson. The offense will come along with Lattimore and as the passing game improves. Unfortunately, it may be at the expense of the Blazers this week.  Defense is very good led by an exceptional frontline with bookends Jadeveon Clowney and Devin Taylor, 6’6″, 256 and 6’8″,267 respectively. Jonathan Perry and the Blazers’ offense may be in for a long day. But they could be competitive. Still think the Blazers have got some talent. Just need something good to happen and get some momentum.

Vandy may win this week against the Blue Hose of Presbyterian. Kentucky in a war with Western Kentucky. Western Kentucky is a pretty good football team as the Tide can attest to. State in no cakewalk at Troy. Ole Miss hosting a good, revitalized  Texas team.

Rory takes the BMW Championship title; looks to Tour Championship to capture Cup

Rory McIlroy has won two weeks in a row and now has won three times in the last five weeks including the 94th PGA Championship and the Deutsche Bank last week at TPC Boston. This week he did it at the BMW Championship at Crooked Stick Golf Club in Indiana with a score of -20, two clear of second place Phil Mickelson and Lee Westwood, who both finished at -18. Rory now No.1 on the Fed Ex rankings points list as the playoffs move to the final event at East Lake in Atlanta for the Tour Championship, Sept. 20-23. Tiger is second on the points list, Nick Watney is third, Phil is fourth and Brandt Snedeker is fifth. Any one of those five can win it with a victory at East Lake and a lesser showing by one or several of their competitors in front of them. Should be compelling drama.
Rory is just on fire. A lot has been made of Tiger being so complimentary of Rory and I think Tiger is getting tired of it. The competition is going to heat up in two weeks. I kind of like a kinder, gentler Tiger. He needs to be a better person, and he’s playing very good golf right now. Rory is such a good kid that you just can’t help but like him. Even Tiger is nice to him. Actually, Tiger has been a pretty nice guy lately and the media is making such a big deal about that. I like him better this way. The players seem to be getting along with him well and he’s playing exceptional golf. The competition is just fierce right now. So many elite guys in these playoffs who want this Cup and the $10M check that goes with it. That’s a lot to play for.

The Tour Championship should be high drama. With all the football and excitement there, there is still a lot of electricity in the Fed Ex playoffs. The elite players have raised the level of their games. It’s fantastic.

After the Tour Championship, it’s on to the Ryder Cup at famed Medinah Country Club in Medinah, Illinois, just outside Chicago. Will be incredible drama with some incredible names on both the American and European sides battling it out in a war for the coveted cup. Some phenomenal golf being played right now. The Tour Championship will definitely be worth watching and the Ryder Cup is a must see, Sept. 28-30, Friday through Sunday at East Lake Golf Club. Coverage for both will be provided by Golf Channel (Tour Champ) and NBC (Tour Champ and all of the Ryder Cup).
