Final Four Picks

Kentucky (36-2) vs. Louisville (30-9)

Time: 6:09 PM ET/5:09 CT

CBS

As much as I admire Rick Pitino as a strategist and motivator, I just don’t think he had the horses in this one. Anthony Davis, Terrence Jones, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist and the rest of this talented cast of players are just too much for a scrappy, courageous Louisville team. If it comes down to coaching, I’d pick Louisville. Taking nothing away from Calipari, just think Pitino may be one of the best on floor coaches ever, if not the best. But this Kentucky team is flat out loaded as everyone knows. Pitino’s best chance is for Peyton Siva to turn up the defensive heat in the full court on Marques Teague, and for Louisville to create a lot of turnovers. Kyle Kuric, Chris Smith and Siva need to shoot the ball well too. You have to play the perfect game to beat Kentucky this year and there is really no margin for error. I don’t think Louisville can be perfect the entire game. But I do think it will be a very good game.

Ohio State (31-7) vs. Kansas (31-6)

8:49 ET/7:49 CT

CBS

Terrific matchup between Jared Sullinger and Thomas Robinson, two of the three best post players in the country. Sullinger has kind of gone unheralded this year with the emergence of the awesome Anthony Davis of Kentucky and Robinson, who averages 17 points and 11 rebounds. But Sullinger has had quite a year of his own averaging 17 and nine. He is stellar. But to me, Ohio State goes as point guard Aaron Craft goes. The way he plays against the outstanding Tyshawn Taylor of Kansas will determine the outcome. Taylor is a tremendous driver and scorer of the basketball. Craft, to me, is the best on ball defender in the country. That should be a classic matchup to go along with the epic duel between Sullinger and Robinson. Like Sullinger, Craft and that stellar talent at Ohio State to just barely get by an equally talented Jayhawks’ team. Craft and Sullinger are the difference.

The Ohio State 78, Kansas 76

Jerod Haase, fifth basketball coach in history at UAB

Very impressive guy. His playing resume is exceptional. The 37-year old South Lake Tahoe native who will be 38 April 1, played from’92-’93 at Cal then transferred to Kansas where he played under present UNC coach Roy Williams from 1994-97. He started 99 of 101 games at Kansas and scored 1,264 points, averaging 12.5 ppg for his career. He helped lead Kansas to an 89-13 record in his three years playing. In 1996-97, he played with future NBA players Jacque Vaughn, Scot Pollard, Paul Pierce and Raef LaFrentz to lead Kansas to a 34-2 record and a Sweet 16 appearance where they lost a heartbreaker to eventual national champion Arizona, 85-82, here in Birmingham at the Jeffco Civic Center. Arizona had a terrific team that year and defeated a stellar Kentucky team under Rick Pitino in the finals. All three of those teams were championship worthy. Haase averaged 12 points per game that year despite playing with a broken wrist. Haase was also a first team GTE Academic All-American as a senior and second team as a junior. He cowrote a book, Floor Burns, detailing his 1996-97 season as a player at Kansas. The Kansas stat crew created floor burns as a stat after Haase had 165 of them as junior.
He has worked with Williams extensively. He became the Kansas Director of Basketball Operations for Williams from 1999-2003. During that time the Jayhawks reached the Final Four in 2002 and the national championship game in 2003. He went on as an assistant for Williams at North Carolina, which won national championships in 2005 and 2009.

This, to me, is a great hire for Brian Mackin and the UAB family. Haase agreed to a five year deal worth $475,000 annually with incentives. It helps that he was affordable with UAB having to pay off Mike Davis $625,000 next year, the value of the last year of his contract. The Blazers also have to pay off Neil Calloway as well, along with paying football coach Garrick McGee and his assistants.

Liked Jerod very much. Very engaging, enthusiastic guy. He said his first goal is to re-recruit the players who are on the team right now. That is important to get guys like point guard Quincy Taylor, shooting guard Jordan Swing, shooting guard Preston Purifoy and power forward Ovie Soko and the other guys on board. The players seemed cautious. They were hit hard with the news of losing Davis, but they’ll need to adjust. I know they’ll like their new coach.

Recruiting cranks up and Haase said he’ll have one assistant in the next day or two. First day of regular signing period is April 11th. Haase will be hitting the ground running. Jerod just seems like a level-headed, enthusiastic guy. He’s just right for a program that is rich in tradition and has the ability to be outstanding going forward. Looks like they’ve got the right leader for it. With the hiring of Haase and McGee in football, BMac has hit a pair of home runs. Like both these hires.  Jerod excited the UAB fan base yesterday. Hopeful he can do that next year on the floor.

Kentucky in a test; Kansas-UNC in a Classic; Tigey

I like the Wildcats to prevail today over Baylor, but in a close game, 78-74. Baylor is a lot better than I thought they were. They have talent on offense in Perry Jones III (13.4 ppg, 7.6 rbg), Pierre Jackson (13.6 5.9 apg) and the rugged Qunicy Acy (11.7, 7.4). Their talented shooting guard Brady Heslip is a 93% free throw shooter, so if it gets late and Baylor is ahead, look for the ball to be in his hands. Those are dynamite numbers. We all know about Anthony Davis (14.2, 10.1) Terrence Jones (12.6, 7.1) and Michael Kidd Gilchrist (11.8, 7.6). They put up huge numbers. They’re rebounding numbers are off the charts. If Kentucky shoots the ball well from the outsdie, Doron Lamb, Marquis Teague and the unheralded Darius Miller, they’re very difficult to beat. But I think Baylor will give them a good game. Baylor is very explosive offensively. If they were better on defense, they could win this game. But they come up just a little short against Ky. Like Kentucky to advance to the Final Four to play Louisville next Saturday.
1:20 PM CT CBS.

Kansas-Carolina is always an interesting matchup to begin with, but what makes it more interesting is the status of UNC point guard Kendall Marshall. Can he play, and if he plays, how effective will he be? I just don’t see him being that effective even if he play, and if he doesn’t, Stillman White, his backup, just doesn’t cut it. Probably a good kid, but just not on the level of the Jayhawk guards. Like the Thomas Robinson (17.7 ppg. 11.9 rbg) and the Jayhawks to get by the Tar Heels and play the Ohio State in the Final Four next week. If Carolina had a healthy Kendall Marshall, I’d like Carolina. But they don’t, so I’m going with Kansas. Kansas 72, UNC 66

4:05 PM CBS.

Tigey tries to win his first PGA-sanctioned tournament since 2009 today at Bay Hill. I’m really pulling for Graeme McDowell, who is one shot back in second place. I love that NBC’s Johnny Miller is the only commentator, maybe besides Nick Faldo, who openly thinks Eldrick is weird. I sure do. He’s just an uptight, overly intense guy, who’s all about Tiger. Nothing else matters to him. It’s really kind of pitiful that that’s all he has is himself, his golf game and whatever else he’s into. Who knows what that is? Hank Haney’s book comes out tomorrow, The Big Miss,  and it’s going to be interesting to hear Haney describe  how weird and egocentric Tiger really is.  Graeme seems to be a fun, jovial  guy. Of course, he’s a former UAB golfer who was the top player in the country in the early 2000s, and the 2010 U.S. Open champion. He beat Tiger in 2010, coming back from a four-stroke deficit in the Chevron Challenge, Tiger’s tournament, and beating Tiger on the playoff hole when he canned a 25-footer for birdie. It’s always fun to see Eldrick go down. I hope it happens again today at Arnie Invitational. He’s not invincible any more. The other guys are getting a little more confidence against him; they’re not as intimidated. At least I hope so today.

(Anthony Davis should get his team to the Final Four today.)

Louisville-Florida, ‘Cuse- The Ohio State in Epic Matchups

Louisville over Florida barely, 76-74, in a terrific game between Rick Pitino and his protege, Billy Donovan. Could go the other way. Donovan helped lead Pitino’s Providence team to the Final Four in 1987 as the team’s point guard. They called him “Billy the Kid.” He could flat out stroke it.Donovan played point guard like Beethoven played the piano. They both coach like Ludwig, too.  Pitino and Donovan two best in the business as far as X’s and O’s and motivation. Calipari may recruit better than anybody else, but as far as coaching them on the floor, give me Pitino and Donovan. Love those guys. Like Syracuse to win a war over Ohio State, 72-70. Should be a stellar game as well. ‘Cuse just a little better than Ohio State I think. Both outstanding teams. Just like Dion Waiters’ clutch gene. Think he gets it done for the ‘Cuse today. Should be terrific day for college basketball. Ky-Baylor tomorrow should be riveting and UNC-Kansas will be awesome. Those predictions tomorrow.

The ‘Ville-Gators lead it off at 3:30 in Phoenix and ‘Cuse-The Ohio State is at 6 PM in Boston. On CBS.

Kentucky tries to keep pressing forward in Sweet 16

The Wildcats have a rematch with Indiana, one of the two teams that defeated them this year. The Hoosiers defeated the Wildcats, 73-72, Dec. 10 at Assembly Hall in Bloomington, In, on a last second trifecta by Birmingham native Christian Watford.  But the Wildcats are on a roll after playing a terrific game last Saturday Night in blowing out Iowa State. If point guard Marcus Teague can play like he did last Saturday Night (24 points), the Wildcats may be cutting down the nets come April 2 in the Crescent City. Here’s a look at tonight’s games and predictions.
Last night: 2-2. Won The Cuse and Florida. Lost Cincy and Michigan State.

Xavier (23-12) vs. Baylor (29-7)

South Region

Where: Phillips Arena, Atlanta

Time: 6:15 PM CT

Network CBS

Announcers: Jim Nantz, Clark Kellogg, and “The Wolf.”

Should be a pretty exciting, fast-paced game. Like Tu Holloway and Mark Lyons to light it up for Xavier. Kenny Frease a fine big man for Musketeers as well. Perry Jones, III is a fine player for Baylor, but believe Xavier can outshoot the Bears, who aren’t that great defensively. Like Xavier to pull off the upset.

Xavier 76, Baylor 70

Ohio (29-7) vs. North Carolina (31-5)

Midwest Regional

Where: Edward R. Jones Dome, St. Louis

Time: 6:47 PM CT

Network: WTBS

Announcers: Marv “Yes!” Albert, Steve Kerr and Craig Sager

This has mismatch written all over it and it is. The Heels will probably be without point guard Kendall Marshall, who is out with a broken bone in his right wrist, but it won’t matter. Harrison Barnes (17 ppg), Tyler Zeller (16 points, 9.4 boards) and John Henson (13 ppg, 10 boards) could be the best front wall in basketball along with Kentucky. They just need somebody to get them the ball. They’ll have a point guard who can do enough. The Tar Heels move on pretty easily. Ohio might make it interesting at first, but the Tar Heels will pull away and get ready for a potential matchup with Kansas in the Elite Eight.

UNC 84, Ohio 68

Indiana (27-8) vs. Kentucky (34-2)

South Regional

Where: Phillips Arena, Atlanta

Time: 8:45 PM CT

Network: CBS

Announcers: Nantz, Special K and Wolf

The Kentucky players will have some revenge on their minds. That and their talent will carry them in this game. Indiana is a very solid Big Ten team, but not good enough for Anthony Davis, Terrence Jones, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, Darius Miller and Marcus Teague and enough of a bench to get by. Who knows what kind of numbers Davis or Jones will put up tonight? They’re always dominant. Indiana has some good shooters and really hustle, but that won’t be enough. Kentucky rolls on to Elite Eight.

Wildcats 76, Indiana 66

North Carolina State (24-12) vs. Kansas (29-6)

Midwest Regional

Where: Edward R. Jones Dome, St. Louis

Time: 9:17 PM CT

Network: TBS

Announcers: Albert, Kerr and Sager

NC State has been a great story this postseason. They were so impressive in their victory over Gtown last Sunday. They play hard and they are very talented. But I like Thomas Robinson, one of the top five players in the country, and the highly talented Jayhawks to prevail. Rock Chalk Jayhawk moves on to the Elite Eight to face UNC in what should be an epic game. But this should be a very good game and one State could win. But like Kansas to get it done over Gottfried and company, barely, in an entertaining game.

Kansas 78, NC State 74

(If Marcus Teague plays like he did last Saturday, like Wildcats’ chances to win it all.)

Sweet 16 thoughts and predictions for tonight

The ‘Cuse vs. The Badgers

Records: ‘Cuse (33-2); Wisconsin (26-9)

East Regional

Where: T. D. Garden, Boston

Time: 6 PM

Network: CBS

The ‘Cuse looked outstanding last Saturday against Kansas State. Wisconsin a solid, defensive juggernaut. They can play some defense now. But the ‘Cuse is an excellent defensive team as well. That 2-3 zone the Orange employs is tough to score against and Scoop Jardine, Dion Waiters and C.J. Fair are terrific players. When Waiters is hot from 3, he’s almost unstoppable. Jordan Taylor and Ryan Evans are stellar players for the Badgers as well, but like the way ‘Cuse is playing right now even without big man Fab Melo. The ‘Cuse looks final four bound and championship game bound.

‘Cuse 64, Badgers 58

Michigan State vs. the ‘Ville

Records: Sparty (29-7); Louisville (28-9)

West Regional

Where: US Airways Center, Phoenix

Time: 6:47 PM

Network: WTBS

This is a classic match between Tom Izzo and Rick Pitino and their stellar teams. Look for Draymond Green to be the difference maker here. He’ll be the best player on the court. Both teams play hard-nosed defense, but Green will be the guy who tips the scale in Izzo and Sparty’s favor.

Michigan State 65, Louisville 61

The Ohio State vs. Cincinnati

Records: Buckeyes (29-7); Cincy (26-10)

East Regional

Where: Boston

Time: 8:45 PM

Network: CBS

Both teams are outstanding. Buckeyes looked good in defeating Gonzaga last weekend and Cincy was stellar in a terrific victory over No.2 seed Florida State, whom I thought was going to go a lot further. Something about this Cincy team is special. They are highly athletic and can shoot the three well. They’ll get after you on defense. While the Buckeyes might have a little better talent, like the chemistry of this Bearcats team. Yancey Gates, their big man, should do a good job on Jared Sullinger of Ohio State. Sean Kilpatrick is an excellent shooter and when he’s on from trifecta, Cincy is great. Like the Bearcats to pull off the upset. The Big East is just a special conference, like the SEC in football.

Cincy 75, Ohio State 72

Marquette vs the Gators

Records: Golden Eagles (27-7); Gators (25-10).

West Regional

Where: Phoenix

Time: 9:17 PM

Network: TBS

This is a riveting matchup between a highly athletic team in Marquette and a pretty athletic team that can really shoot the ball when they’re on, which is usually the case, in Florida. Should be an offensive game here, which is always electric. I just like Billy Donovan in this game. Believe he’ll coach his team to the Elite Eight. Florida will get the threes from Kenny Boynton, Bradley Beal, Erving Walker and Erik Murphy, and Patric Young will hold his own in the middle. Marquette is very talented, but like Donovan to get his team to the Elite Eight in an exciting game.

Florida 78, Marquette 74

(Like Kenny Boynton and Florida shooters to lead Gators past the Golden Eagles.)

2012 picks and winner of the tournament

I like Sparty to get it done over a tough, talented Florida State team, 65-63. Syracuse, without center Fab Melo, who’s not so Fab in the classroom, thus his suspension from the tournament, will pay the price for losing him when they lose to Vandy in the Sweet 16. Kentucky, again, does not have the experience that Michigan State has and it’ll cost’em in the Final Four.  The bracket is a little messy, but my Final Four teams are: UK, Michigan State, Florida State and UNC. In the Elite Eight, I’ve got UK over Xavier, Michigan State over Missouri, UNC over Kansas and Florida State over Vandy. Final Four is UK, Michigan State, UNC and Florida State. Like Mich. State over UK and FSU to beat Carolina again this year, for a third time, in the semifinals. Michigan State wins the title over FSU. Tom Izzo (pictured left) will go to his seventh Final Four since 2000 and win his second national championship. His first was in 2000.
Fasten your seat belts. The engine is revving up. Should be a terrific ride.

2012 NCAA Men’s Bracket

March unplugged in the SEC Tourney

The tourney is here and the 18,5oo seat New Orleans Arena is hosting. Some terrific games coming up. I will be predicting each days’ games. I’ll start today with the first round games which start tomorrow at noon. Kentucky is the clear favorite. It’ll take a team to get hot from the perimeter to beat them. A team like Vandy or Florida could do it with their three-point shooting. Tennessee is a hot team. They’ve got some pretty good horses. ‘Bama has the players to compete with any team on a given night, it just depends on the Alabama team that shows up. Auburn fighting hard. Losing Varez Ward and Chris Denson didn’t help. Not sure of their availability for tourney.
Anthony Grant and Tony Barbee have done the best jobs they possibly can with the distractions they’ve had this season, particularly Grant. He’s got the Tide on the brink of an NCAA tourney bid. Should get it. It would help to at least win one, and you never know, the Tide could get hot. AU just needs to keep fighting and see what they can do this week. Here’s a look at the first round games with predictions.

N0.8 seed LSU (7-9, 17-13) vs. No.9 Arkansas (6-10, 18-13)

Noon, CT, SEC Network, WTTO-21 in Birmingham.

LSU’s top players:  Justin Hamilton: 13 ppg., 7 rbg.: Andre Stringer: 10.1 ppg.;  Anthony Hickey: 9.2 ppg. 3.6 apg.

Arkansas: B.J. Young: 15.3 ppg; Mardracus Wade: 10.8 ppg; Rickey Scott: 9.4 ppg.

Analysis: Interesting game here against two teams that are capable of playing well; at least at home. Young is an excellent scorer who is lightning quick and can make some steals and scores in transition for the Hogs. Wade a good scorer. LSU looked pretty good at times, as did Arkansas, just couldn’t achieve consistency. Hamilton is a good player who can score and control the boards. Arkansas just has too much quickness for the Bengal Tigers. Mike Anderson takes his team to the quarters to face Kentucky. Sounds like fun.

 Arkansas 62, LSU 58

No.5 Alabama (9-7, 20-10) vs. No.12 South Carolina (2-14, 10-20)

2:30 PM, CT, SEC Network.

Alabama top players: JaMychal Green: 13.8 ppg., 7.3 rbg; Trevor Releford: 13.1 ppg., 3 apg; Andrew Steele: 7.3 ppg, 3.1 rbg.; Trevor Lacey: 6.7 ppg.

South Carolina: Malik Cooke: 12.5 ppg, 4.8 rbg; Bruce Ellington: 11 ppg., 4 apg, Demontre Harris 6.8 ppg., 5.6 rbg., 70 blocks.

Analysis: The last time these two teams met was in Columbia in January and Ellington sank a contested layup at the buzzer to win the game for the Gamecocks. Alabama is a good team. Maybe they put it together. Releford makes them go; he makes his teammates better. Steele is a good leader and Green is capable of having a big night. The freshmen, Lacey, Levi Randolph and Rodney Cooper are starting to find their way, particularly Lacey. Ellington is a heckuva’ player for SC and Harris can dominate with his shot blocking ability in the lane. This should be a competitive game, but like the Tide to pull it out and face an interesting game against Florida in the second round Friday.

‘Bama 65, South Carolina 59

No.7 Ole Miss (8-8, 18-12) vs. No.10 Auburn (5-11, 15-15)

6:30 PM, CT, SEC Network

Ole Miss top players: Terrance Henry: 12.3 ppg, 4.4 rbg; Murphy Holloway: 11.1 ppg., 8.9 rbg.; Nick Williams: 10.2 ppg, 3.4 rbg.

AU: Frankie Sullivan: 12.6 ppg., 3.9 rbg., 69 assists; Kenny Gabriel: 12.2 ppg., 7.6 rbg.; Rob Chubb: 8.1 ppg., 5.1 rbg; Varez Ward: 9 ppg., 103 assists.

Analysis: Not sure about  Ward’s or Chris Denson’s availability. They would help, but not sure what Tony Barbee is going to do about them. Auburn will scrap. Barbee had brought that mentality to this team. I think he’s going to do a good job at Auburn eventually. Next year should be better. They’ve got a lot of players coming in. Gabriel and Sullivan will have to play well tomorrow, both scoring and rebounding, particularly in Gabriel’s case. Would be nice if Sullivan could get it going from three. Chubb needs to be active. Ole Miss had a nice win over Arkansas at Fayetteville and a pretty impressive win over ‘Bama last Saturday at home. They are capable of being good on any given day. These teams aren’t going to make the big tourney unless they can somehow pull off a tournament championship. The winner faces UT on Friday. Believe it’s going to be the Rebels, but in a good game. Rebels go on to face UT in the quarters Friday.

Ole Miss 72, AU 70

No.6 Miss. State (8-8, 21-10) vs. No.11 Georgia (5-11, 14-16)

9 PM, CT, SEC Network.

Miss State top players: Arnett Moultrie: 16.1 ppg., 10.1 rbg.; Dee Bost: 15.8 ppg., 5.2 apg.; Rodney Hood: 10.5 ppg., 4.8 rbg., 57 assists. Renardo Sidney: 10.1 ppg., 5.3 rbg.

Dawgs: Gerald Robinson: 14 ppg., 4 rbg., 4 apg; Ken Caldwell-Pope: 13.8 ppg., 5.1 rbg; Donte Williams: 8 ppg., 5.4 rbg.

Analysis: State has been one of the toughest teams to figure out not only in the SEC, but in the country. They are loaded with talent. They knocked off Vandy at Vandy and had some nice wins in the pre-conference schedule. If they show up, they’ll win. Moultrie and Bost are excellent players who can both score, Moultrie inside and Bost from three, and Hood is a scorer from outside, too. Sidney is always a question mark. He looks like he’d rather be eating a pizza or taking a winter’s nap than playing a lot of the time, but he is a highly skilled player. Jalen Steele is a scorer from three when he’s on. He’s hit 61 threes this year. Bost had 70. But they can go cold at times. Georgia can be good at times. It’s hard to win at the football schools many years. They just don’t care enough about basketball. Mark Fox seems like a good coach, but hasn’t been able to get over the hump thus far. Rick Stansbury has had good teams at State and won the tourney in 2009. State certainly capable of getting hot and making a run. Like State to get it done tomorrow night and play Vandy on Friday.

State 70, Dawgs 64

(Trevor Releford, left, and Frankie Sullivan, will be counted on to lead their teams to victory.)
