‘Bama basketball signees

In Rivals 150. Four-star point guard Trevor Releford came in at 90. The 5’10”, 190 pounder from Shawnee Mission, Kansas chose Tide over Oklahoma and a host of other big schools.
Four-star power forward Jason Carter of Humble, Texas, came in at number 99. He is 6’8″, 230 and chose ‘Bama over Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Ole Miss among others.

Good class to go along with two three-stars; point guard Kendall Durant (6’3″, 185, Weatherford Texas JC) and shooting guard Charles Hankerson (6’5″ 210, Miami).

Dan Ireland-Dez Bryant

I tweeted about this as well, but feel like this is a blog issue. Jeff Ireland, the general manager of the Miami Dolphins, asked Dez Bryant during a pre-draft interview if his mother was a prostitute. That seems out of line, but you have to know Bryant’s history. He has been considered a cancer to his college football team, the Oklahoma State Cowboys.
My take is the pro team that hires him (now the Dallas Cowboys) will make a multi-million dollar investment in him. He could get as much as 15 million guaranteed. Do you really want to take a chance on a guy who has a troubled upbringing and problems of his own and risk a large sum of money for a guy who could get in a felony or a misdemeanor situation with the law? I don’t think you want to take that chance.

I side with Ireland on this one as harsh a question as that may seem. With Ben Roethlisberger and Santonio Holmes joining the list of players who have acted badly and caused their teams to lose good sums of money and embarrassed their  franchise, the Steelers in those two cases (the Steelers have to pay back the NFL a penalty for Ben R.’s and Holmes missed games, significant amounts of money), I don’t blame GM’s, team presidents, owners or coaches, for questioning character. It not only puts a bad name on the franchise that will cause that franchise to possibly lose fans, but will also cost the franchise significant cash. I know the fans will probably come back, but it’s not good business for sure.

I’m sorry if I’m insensitive, but the reality is this is a business like any other and lost work time costs the company money. These players are paid extremely well, so it’s their responsibility to represent their organization in a law-abiding, classy manner. We spoil these guys because they have God-given talent that others don’t have in their particular field, in this case football. They need to understand that with privileges comes responsibility. An old adage “character matters,” is totally appropriate for NFL players. It does matter. It can make or break a team.

Just work hard and behave. You can go out with friends, have a beer of two after a game, but act responsibly. Get a taxi, control yourself. A lot of Americans can do that. Spoiled athletes need to be able to do that, too.

So Ireland’s questioning of Bryant to me was an intelligent move. It’s called due diligence. Any other company would do it before making an investment in an employee. And we’re talking possibly 15 million guaranteed for Bryant. That’s not Monopoly money. I would do everything possible to find out if this employee is capable of helping the company and not losing it money, significant amounts of money. If not, I’m not going to hire him. It’s just common sense.

Cam Newton the man

AU goes with Newton as their starting quarterback for 2010. Didn’t see enough of him in spring game to get a real read on him, but that must have been by design by the coaches to keep from showing too much. They felt like with Cam’s versatility running and throwing the ball–he’s 6’6″ and can see over the defensive line–and his stats from JC (Blinn Junior College in Texas) throwing for almost 3,000 yards and 22 tds were what tipped the scales in his favor.
More than that, his interview on the sideline during Auburn’s A-Day game was impressive. Sounded like a sharp kid who was focused and knew what he wanted to do in football. He wants to lead this team and he sounds like a leader. If he can deliver on the field, AU could win 10 games this year barring major injuries, particularly on defense.

I thought the other qbs looked good in the spring game, but Newton’s physical attributes, his size, speed, arm strength and mobility, sold the AU coaches. He’ll be tested in the best conference in the country next year with defenses geared towards stopping him, but he’ll have potent weapons around him with running backs Mario Fannin, Onterio McCalebb, Eric Smith, Dontae Aycock, Robert Dyer  and a talented group of receivers led by Darvin Adams, Terrell Zachery and the potentially explosive Kodi Burns. Kodi reminds me of a Hines Ward, Antwaan Randle El-type player. I think he can make a very good college and pro career at wr. Oline looks pretty solid from what I saw in spring though there wasn’t much rush and no real blitzing or tackling on defense.

Offense should be good this year. It’s up to defense. They need some leaders to step forward. If that happens and Newton plays well, AU could win 10 this year barring major injuries. They have a favorable home schedule, and they were impressive in the spring game. With some dbs coming back and some linebacker help coming in with Bynes, Freeman and others and some pretty good dlinemen, defense could be improved. They need to be to help this team reach their goals this season. AU is building well.

Cox

He’s terrible. Never liked him even when the Braves went to the playoffs from ’91-2004. He had a ton of talent with pitchers like Smoltz, Glavine, Maddox and guys who filled the void like Steve Avery. I bet Oprah could have won some division titles with the talent the Braves had in those years. Chipper Jones was in his prime. They just put in player after player and they would produce. They still only won one World Series. That’s 14 straight years in the postseason and one World Series title. I don’t think that’s very good.
Now the old fat guy has a different roster, but they are underachieving. They have a good pitching staff, but they aren’t hitting the ball. Jason Heyward may be a good player one day, but at present, he’s struggling. Started out fast, but has come back to earth.

I was hoping Cox would retire at the end of last year or they would force him out, but the fat guy wanted another paycheck. He’s wasting the Braves’ time and I can’t believe those quacks in the front office can’t figure it out. They’ve wasted 2010 to appease Cox and they’re going to pay for it with their sixth straight year of no postseason. The Braves may get hot and they’ll get you excited, but they’ll ultimately let you down. They always have and will again this year under Cox. The guy just needs to go. Any chance of an early going away party? Picture above: Where the heck is the two for one spread? Dang they’re slow. I need that and a six. Make it a twelve.

Tiger Prowl 2

I really didn’t like it at first. Thought it was ostentatious and not very classy. But you can’t argue with the results. Auburn landed a top five class this year and Tiger Prowl and Big Cat weekend had a lot to do with it. The bus is in town Wed with six assistant coaches who will visit coaches at Hoover, Leeds, Minor and somewhere else. It’s going all over the state. The tour really has made an impression on impressionable teenagers. Coach Chizik, Curtis Luper and Trooper Taylor have a good thing going and have reaped the benefits so far. The 2010 class has yet to hit the field though. They still have to produce, some their freshmen years. That’s not a sure thing. There could be injuries and some guys who just don’t pan out, but Michael Dyer, Corey Lemonier and company look really good on paper. Cam Newton may be the starter for the Arkansas State game on Sept. 4 though I was pretty impressed with Neil Caudle, Barrett Trotter and Clint Moseley. Think Caudle could start and be an effective qb for AU. Newton didn’t get a lot of opportunities in the A-Day game, so I thought maybe they’re just holding him out because they know he’s the man. He’s got the size at 6’6″, 240 pounds and is the third fastest guy on the team. Could be a phenom. Still like Caudle a lot. Think he would bring a lot of Chris Todd leadership to the offense with good passing skills and a lot better mobility than Todd. Caudle can run. But it may be moot. Newton could be the man. May not know until fall practice though could be earlier.

NBA Playoffs getting very interesting

Phoenix sinks 29-of-32 free throws last night in 107-88 victory over Portland. Up 3-2 as they head back to Portland. Portland giving them a tussle, though.  I like Phoenix to make a run if they can pickup their defense. Orlando swept Charlotte. Orlando looks very good even though Dwight Howard seems to be fouling out every game. Milwaukee ties Atlanta. Giving the Hawks everything they want.
Tonight Cavs and Bulls play at Cleveland as Cavs try to close them out. Boston plays Miami at home as they try to finish off  that series. LA in a war with Ok City as the Thunder tries to pull off huge upset. Tied 2-2. Joe Durant and Russell Westbrook have been awesome for Thunder. There is just so much parity in the West. Spurs trying to close it out with Mavs. Jazz try to close out Denver tomorrow night.

Thoughts: Oklahoma City is the story to me along with San Antonio. Thunder won 50 games this year, so they’re for real. Durant an amazing player. Trying to prove that he can handle the big time early in his career. Pretty tough task with the Lakers, though whatever happens, like the Thunder a lot in the future. The future could be now. Lakers really struggling. Don’t know how they’ll get out of the West even if they beat Thunder. Have a matchup with probably the Jazz next. Spurs looking really good to me. They’re playing great defense as usual and just clicking on offense with George Hill and players like DeJuan Blair and Antonio McDyess helping out the Big Three of Duncan, Ginobli and Parker. I’ll go out on a limb right now and say the Spurs can win it all. Beating the Mavs is very impressive. I like the Suns a lot, just don’t know if they play good enough defense. Amar’e and Nash are awesome though. Fun team to watch.

In the east, I think Orlando is going to give Cleveland everything they want if both get that far. Not counting out the Celtics in the next round against the Cavs which should happen. Celtics not done yet. They still have to finish off Heat. Dwayne Wade put on an all-world performance on Sunday with 46 to single-handedly beat the Celts. Still like Boston to win that.

Liking the Cavs and the Spurs in finals though I think the Magic could knock off Cavs and I’m not totally counting out the Lakers. Suns, an outside shot, but need to play better defense. That’s been their Achilles Heel for years.

24 last night- 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Five hours left in the final season. It’s been riveting. Last night wasn’t as fast-paced as the previous shows have been, but was effective in setting up next week’s show and the final five hours.
Jack is in a helicopter as he is in pursuit of Walsh so he can get the information that will bring the Russians to justice for not only killing Renee, but also having King Hassan killed and helping the terrorists try to set off a nuclear fueled bomb in New York. Jack gets away from the air force helicopters and hits the streets. NYPD tries to track him down, but he loses them.

Jack has all the odds stacked against him as everybody is after him. Jack calls an old adversary whom he had gotten immunity for and asks him for a ton of weapons: machine guns, assault rifles, ect.. Meanwhile, Chloe is talking to Jack on the phone and trying to lure him into going to a warehouse where CTU agents will be to arrest him. She is following the president’s orders.

The president shows she is lacking in integrity by trying to push this peace agreement through. She is listening to the conniving former President Charles Logan, who is probably involved in the Russian scheme (it’s not known yet)  and is convincing the president to get a private security team to interrogate Dana Walsh to get the information out of her and keep her from going public with the information and ruining the president’s peace agreement and  her presidency. The president knows about the Russian actions from the day and has gone along with Logan, who is hoodwinking her that this is her legacy, the peace agreement, and that she must keep Walsh from going public. They are also trying to stop Jack from getting to her. The president has told Chloe to apprehend him.

The security team head guy calls Logan’s assistant and says he should kill Walsh so there will be no chance she will talk. The assistant says he’ll think about it.

The security team goes to CTU to get Walsh and Chloe, whom you think may be helping Jack at the time, hands Walsh over to them. Walsh is pleading to Chloe to not let them take her saying that they will kill her. Chloe lets them take her against her better judgement.

Meanwhile, Jack gets the arms from the dealer. There is some interaction between them. This guy is a bad guy with a huge scar on his neck. Jack must have helped him out of some major trouble earlier.

Jack talks to Chloe to find out where the private security group has taken Walsh and Chloe tells him the spot where the CTU agents are. She has totally sold Jack out. Jack goes to the location.

It’s a warehouse. Jack runs over  to the side of the building per Chloe’s instructions. Jack knocks out one agent, but it looks like Jack thinks it’s the security team that is in the warehouse not Cole and the CTU agents. Cole tells Chloe he can’t prevent his men from shooting Jack if they are acting in self defense. She does not want that to happen though she does want Jack arrested.

Cole and the men are prepared for Jack’s entrance. All of the sudden there is a line up above them with a hanging bag of some sort rolling across the line with the CTU agent laid out on top of it. He is alive but knocked out. Jack is in the building. Jack grabs one of the agents and has the machine gun pointed at his head. Cole and the other two agents have their weapons drawn and pointed at Jack and the agent and tell him to drop the weapon. Jack says he’ll shoot the agent unless Cole and company drop their weapons. Cole relents. Jack tells Cole to tie the other three agents up.

Jack tells Cole to call Chloe and tell her that they have him in custody. She’s relieved he’s OK, but tells Cole to bring Jack back to CTU. Jack takes Cole back to an office under gun point and tells him that he (Cole) must help him stop the people who committed the murders and attempted–along with the terrorists– to explode the bomb. Jack tells Cole he could be in a lot of trouble because he harbored Dana while she was  committing treason against the government and committed a whole assortment of crimes. Jack tells Cole he is complicit with her and tells Cole he needs to make this right. Cole never knew about Dana being a Russian spy, but did protect her and killed a guy who had, along with Dana’s ex-boyfriend, gotten Dana to help them steal a lot of money from a bank in New York. Cole had killed one of the guys in self defense. The ex-boyfriend had  been killed by that guy who turned on him.

“What if you’re wrong about this,” Cole says to Jack about the Russian’s plot and the President’s knowledge of the plot. “I’m right,” Jack responds. Cole asks Jack how he knew Chloe was trying to have him arrested instead of trying to help him. Jack says, “I know Chloe.” That must mean Jack knows how Chloe is a stickler for following orders and that she would not disobey an executive order from the president. It’s pretty amazing Jack figures that out.

Cole goes with Jack. They make it look like Jack is taking Cole hostage, so the agents won’t suspect what is going on. Chloe thinks Cole is bringing Jack in and has no idea what has happened.

The show ends with the classless president talking about the peace agreement with Mrs. Hassan in a press conference. Mrs. Hassan is on the side of her and the Russian foreign minister is behind her. Mrs. Hassan, of course, has taken over the leadership role of the IRK from her husband. She has no idea that the President is aware of the Russians’ involvement with her husband’s assassination. She would not go for this agreement if she knew what had happened. The president is complicit in these crimes now.

While this is happening, the security team is starting to torture Walsh. Jack and Cole will be in pursuit. Cole tells Jack that they are not far from where the security team is torturing Walsh. They don’t know exactly where, but Jack intends to find out.

Ethan, the president’s chief of staff, who is the only one who shows integrity besides Jack, resigns because of what the president is doing; hiding evidence that will implicate the Russians in the murders of Hassan and Renee and the attempt to detonate the bomb. He is disgusted with the president as she is holding the press conference to announce the treaty and walks away shaking his head. The president, who trusts Ethan completely, seems a little shaken when Ethan walks away. Ethan had told Logan that he will go after him if he ruins this president. Logan laughs and says the treaty will happen.

Next week looks edge of your seat exciting as Jack and Cole hunt down the dirty security team and tries to stop them from killing Dana and as the president tries to move forward with the peace agreement with the Russians along with Mrs. Hassan. What transpires with the leaders will be interesting as the president is trying to leave her mark on the country while condoning illegal actions per Logan’s coaxing. Something is going to happen with Logan, too. There is something brewing there. The guy is an evil guy.

Hour 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. next week. 8 p.m. on FOX.

The Pacific-Part 7-Peleliu Hills

The Marines have crossed the airfield at Peleliu, but now have to face the Japs in the Umurbrogol Hills. It is intense warfare, the most intense I’ve seen so far. Many are killed, the war-hardened Sargeant Haney breaks down and has to go back to the base. Good friends of Sledge are killed. It is tough to take. The beloved Captain is killed by a sniper. Sledge is almost losing it at the end as they get bombarded mercilessly by the Japs. He tries to cut teeth out from one of the Japs for gold in the Japs’ tooth, but “Snafu” talks him out of it because of germs.
It’s a very sad moment when the captain dies. He was good to all the men, a courageous and kind leader. The men openly weep when he goes by on the stretcher. They finally get off the hills of Peleliu and head back to Pavuvu where they can get a little rest and relaxation. The last scene shows Sledge getting in the water with the other Marines.
