Donovan McNabb

There has always been a debate about how good he is. Some say he gets lambasted in Philly due to racial reasons. I don’t think it’s a racial thing. Philly, like every other pro football town, wants a Super Bowl championship, and while McNabb has led them to five NFC East titles and one Super Bowl, he’s never won it. And I don’t think he ever will. The talk right now is that he is going to the Raiders for a second round draft pick. That doesn’t seem like much value for him, so that’s not very smart.
But McNabb has never been in the class of Tom Brady or now Drew Brees even Peyton Manning (though not sure about his ability to win championships, either). In the Super Bowl against the Patriots in 2005, he looked like he was tired on the last drive and wasted a lot of time. It was crunch time, and he didn’t have that sense of urgency with a chance to tie or win the game. I just have never been a huge fan of his.

Now he’s 33-years old and he may have some good years left, but I just don’t think he’s a Super Bowl winning quarterback. Some compare the Eagles success with McNabb to the Atlanta Braves’ success in baseball. That’s good enough in my book. The Braves should have multiple world championships under Bobby Cox (at least two, even three), but only have one. They have had the best talent some years, but have only gotten it done once on the big stage. A lot of people say Bobby Cox can’t motivate his players enough to get it done in the postseason. I agree with that assessment.

I think the same holds true for McNabb. He has good stats and has had a good career. I think it’s a stretch to say it’s been a great career. I just think you have to win the big one to be considered great. While he has had a pretty solid career at Philly, he’s not gotten the team to the pinnacle of success. The Eagles may now be going with Kevin Kolb. Don’t know much about him, so can’t pass judgment. The deal hasn’t been done, but it’s looking like they’ll trade McNabb. I just don’t see McNabb winning a Super Bowl, so maybe it’s time for the Eagles to move on.

Kareem

Daniel Jeremiah of MovetheSticks.com, a well-studied NFL draft guy, said on ESPN’s First Take that one of the surprises of the draft will be Alabama’s Kareem Jackson. He said Kareem has great ball skills, ran a  good 40 at combine and has good cover skills. He’s 5’11”, 196, not great height for a corner, but Jeremiah is very high on him. Seemed like a very knowledgeable guy.

Another Pittsburgh Steeler in trouble

Santonio Holmes for throwing a glass of water (allegedly) at a woman in Orlando. This guy has been in trouble about three other times before; marijuana possession, ect. The Steelers have not had a good year so far. They may be without their quarterback and wr for the first game of the season. It may get worse than that if these guys are actually arrested for their crimes.

Roethlisberger

Nothing happening right now with Ben Roethlisberger. The NFL could suspend him for a game maybe more employing their personal conduct policy. Whether he’s in a lot more trouble than that remains to be seen. He just keeps putting himself in bad situations. The guy has everything going for him, two Super Bowl rings, a huge 102 mil, 8-year deal, and he could find a nice girl and settle down. You just wonder why he’d want to ruin his life by making bad decisions. Sometimes I just don’t understand pro athletes. They seem to live on the edge in everything they do. They think they’re above the rules. This might catch up with him this time.

The Blind Side-Movie-Five Stars

I loved it. Read the book back in December and wanted to get to the movie for a while, but couldn’t get out to the theater. Rented it last night and thought it was awesome. It’s such a moving story of Leigh Anne (Sandra Bullock) and Sean Tuohy’s adoption of Michael Oher (Quinton Aaron). The story of the Tuohy family–including young son S.J. (Jae Head) and teenage sister Collins (Lily Collins) and Michael–brings tears to your eyes throughout the movie.
The Tuohys as you may know (and this is a true story based on the book by Michael Lewis) take Michael in and protect him from the streets. He was basically homeless with a mother who is a crack addict. Leigh Anne has so much passion and heart and she is a driven to take care of Michael and give him a good life, an opportunity. It’s a success story. Michael doesn’t have a high IQ, but under the guidance of Leigh Anne and the family, starts succeeding in school and then, ultimately, on the football field.

He starts out as a teddy bear on the field at Wingate Christian in Memphis where he is the only African-American in the student body. Coach Burt Cotton (Ray McKinnon) is frustrated with him at practice and says to an assistant during drills he’s built like Tarzan but plays like  Jane. Cotton is all over him. Leigh Anne, who is watching practice with S.J from the bleachers., comes over and tells Cotton she wants to talk with Michael. She tells Michael that he needs to protect his quarterback like he’s her. He needs to protect the running back like he’s S.J. “Protect this family,” she says as she walks away. Michael says, “What about Sean and Collins.” She tells him to protect them, too. Michael gets the message and takes off. He starts burying defenders.

In his first game he is being harassed both mentally and physically by a white linebacker. He gets hit after a play by the lb and Cotton goes ballistic. The ref throws a flag on Cotton when there was no doubt the player gave Michael a cheap shot. Michael loves that his coach is protecting him, and proceeds to  block the linebacker all the way through the end zone and over the foam barrier almost into the parking lot. The ref throws a flag and Cotton questions him for it. The ref calls it “excessive blocking.” Cotton asks Michael why he didn’t stop. Michael tells him it was time for that player to get on the bus and go home. Cotton loves it. Michael destroys the guy the rest of the game and knocks him out.

His recruiting takes off. S is there from LSU (remember this is 2005). Lou Holtz when he was at South Carolina, Phil Fulmer from UT and Houston Nutt from Arkansas all come by. Leigh Anne and Sean are both huge Ole Miss alums; Sean was a basketball player and Leigh Anne a cheerleader. Ed Orgeron comes to the house and tries to sell Michael after Leigh Anne told him to go after him.  S.J. is cutting deals with all the coaches. S gives him a chance to come out in front of the team with him in the opening game. It’s humorous as Fulmer, Holtz and Nutt offer things to S.J. Orgeron, who was a great recruiter at Ole Miss, tells S.J. he can walk the Grove with the team before the game and have a sideline pass. Meanwhile, Michael is working to get his grades up to a 2.5 so he can play college football at Division One. It’s hard for him but he works with a great tutor (Kathy Bates), also an Ole Miss alumnus, who steers him towards the Rebels. He makes the grades and graduates. He’s proud; the whole family is proud.

Michael likes Tenn. but chooses Ole Miss. There is an NCAA investigation. The investigator says that Michael was swayed to go to Ole Miss by his family and his tutor. He gets frustrated when the NCAA investigator tells him the Tuohys took him in to only go to Ole Miss. He runs away and goes back to the place where his roots are and where he thinks his mother is. The gang leader gets him in his house and says some lewd things about having sex with Collins. The whole group is laughing and Michael gets angry. He knocks them all out and runs away.

Leigh Anne finds him the next day and tells him he can do whatever he wants and go wherever he wants. She says he can be a dishwasher if he wants. Michael is happy with his mother’s response. Michael ends up sticking with Ole Miss.

When they get to campus, Leigh Anne is giving Michael a list of things to do. Some nice looking co-eds walk by and Michael gets a big smile on his face. S.J. and Sean do, too. Leigh Anne tells Michael if he gets anybody pregnant she’ll do something to him that he will regret. He gets the message. When they leave Leigh Anne gives Michael a quick hug and walks to the car. Michael talks to Sean and Sean says, you’ve got to peal her away like an onion. Leigh Anne is tough and it’s hard for her to show her emotions, but she is very upset that Michael is going to college. Michael goes to the car and tells her he wants a big embrace. They hug tightly. It’s very moving.

Michael goes on to become an All-American and is the 23rd draft choice of the Baltimore Ravens. He now plays for the Ravens at the coveted position of left tackle. Left tackle became paramount to coaches when Lawrence Taylor broke Joe Theisman’s leg in a game in the early 80’s. Taylor changed the way coaches approached the game. The left tackle was invaluable. Michael has become a wealthy young man; a success story. It shows what good parenting will do. At the end there are scenes with the family and Michael at Ole Miss as an All-American player and at the draft getting drafted by the Ravens.

It’s not as detailed as the book; there was a lot more that happened that can’t be totally covered in a two-hour movie. There is more about the gangs in the book and more detail about pro football. The end of the book has Dwight Freeney saying, “You tell Michael Oher I’ll be waiting for him,” which was pretty powerful. But the movie is terrific and Bullock is phenomenal. It’s moving and inspirational. Bullock won the academy award for best actress. She deserved it. I thought the others, particularly S.J., were excellent, too. If you haven’t seen it yet, you got to.

Best NBA player: Wall, Cousins or Evan Turner

All three are great players. To me, DeMarcus Cousins will have the greatest impact with John Wall next and Evan Turner (Ohio State) third. Cousins is the big man, wide body (6’11”, 260), who has great shooting touch inside and dominates on the glass both on the offensive and defensive ends. I know some people say he’s immature, but I think he plays with a lot of passion. He probably needs to control himself a little more, but when you’re getting mugged in the middle, it gets a little frustrating and it’s hard to keep your emotions in check. If he stays out of trouble, he can be an outstanding NBA player. I saw him last year at LeFlore and wasn’t that impressed. I thought Eric Bledsoe and Parker outhustled and outplayed him in the Final Four here in town when Parker defeated LeFlore. But he’s shown a lot of heart and drive let alone ability this year. Calipari has gotten it out of him.  I think he’ll be the best pro.
Wall is next. He’s a great slasher, driver, passer, finisher and defensive player. He’s got it all except for a three-point shot. Rajon Rondo, also a former Kentucky player now with the Celtics, has a similar game to Wall’s and has never been able to shoot the 3, but still is a very effective player. It would help for Wall to be able to shoot the triple, but not absolutely necessary. Wall is  right behind Cousins and should have a major positive impact on an NBA team.

Turner should be a solid NBA player, maybe not great. He is a highly skilled player, shooter, penetrator and pretty good defender,  but he may be a little too finesse. He could turn out to be great, but I like Cousins and Wall better. They seem to be NBA ready for sure. Both should be fun to watch at the next level.

As good as all three were, they still couldn’t make it to the Final Four. The teams they played against brought their “A” games. Tennessee, which lost a heartbreaker to Michigan State, literally made one more shot than Ohio State in a great game, and Kentucky just bricked it in their game against West Virginia, and West Va. may have the best coach in the game at this point in time in Bob Huggins. I know Izzo and Coach K are pretty special and Brad Stevens of Butler is a rising superstar, but “Huggie Bear” has had an amazing postseason winning the Big East tourney and having an impressive run in the NCAA’s. The victory against Kentucky can be attributed to Huggins’ coaching almost as much as to his players’ performance. He’s phenomenal in my opinion.

We’ll see how the Final Four goes. Really like how West Va is playing and Huggins just seems to dictate the games to his tempo and style of play. He and Coach K will be a classic in the semifinals. Butler-Michigan State will be great, too. Like this Final Four a lot. Going to study on it and give predictions later in the week.

24- 14th hour 5 a.m.- 6 a.m.

It’s getting more and more thrilling. The President is told by Samir (head terrorist) that she must give up President Hassan in the next hour or he will blow up the nuclear bomb in Manhattan that will kill up to 200,000 people. CTU was on Samir, Taren and the others when they were in a cab with the fuel rods, but the traitor Dana Walsh scattered the screen and guided them out of the pursuit. Now they have wired the bomb and Taren has driven to a spot to detonate it. Taren is told by Samir that he will be honored by his country and his family. Taren is nervous but is going to do it. You think maybe there is a little good in Taren and he’s not going to do this, but he is a terrorist and committed to their psycho cause.
Meanwhile, the general is telling the President of her options of retaliating against the IRK if the bomb is detonated. He then says they ought to give up Hassan to the terrorists to save American lives. President Taylor tells him and the others in the room she is not going to give up her friend and give in to terrorists.

The general gets together with her chief of staff and forges a plan to get Hassan to the terrorists. They will get a Black Ops gang to ambush the group escorting Hassan and his family to safety. Jack has been chosen by the President to lead Hassan and his family to a safe place. Renee Walker is also with Jack along with some other Secret Service Agents.

The general and chief of staff go into the former chief’s office–who is still active and totally against giving up Hassan–and make the order to kill all the others and take Hassan alive to give to the terrorists. The former chief of staff, Ethan Kanin, catches them in his office and suspects they’re up to something bad. He sees a computer piece in the computer and detects that that is an order to do something. He calls Jack on his cell phone that is in his pocket. Jack gets the call, but before Kanin can get any information to him the general takes the phone. Kanin tries to get out of the office, but the chief of staff and general won’t let him. Kanin, who has had heart problems, says the men will be held for treason, but then has a heart attack. His medication drops out of his pocket and the chief of staff says they have to get him some help. The general says no. The chief of staff gives him a pill, but it’s not working. The general says they will have to pray he survives. Meanwhile, the order is given.

Jack, detecting something is wrong, calls Kanin back. They are about to the spot where they will get Hassan and family in an SUV to safety when the Black Ops open fire. Jack and Renee get the family away while the other agents try to fight the Ops off.

The agents are all killed but show a great deal of bravery, one female agent in particular. The Ops are on Jack and Renee’s trail. They come to a point where Jack and Renee and the President have to fight back. Jack somehow kills all but one of the Ops. One Op has Jack in his sights to kill him, but Hassan shoots him. The Op is not killed and Jack discovers the Ops are Americans and finds out from te shooter about the deal that Samir tries to make with the President. Then it goes back to Samir talking to Taren on the phone .Taren is parked in the van in a side alley in Manhattan with the nuclear bomb in back. Samir tells him to set the timer. It’s set for 15 minutes.

Next week is a two-hour episode as it gets even scarier for the people of New York, Jack, Renee, King Hassan, his family and the President. Should be better than ever. Seven p.m. next Monday on Fox.

Els wins at Bay Hill

After a win at Doral two weeks ago,  the Big Easy adds another with the Arnie Invitational. He had two critical par putts that he sank and a blast out of a trap on 17 to six feet that he sank for par. He was one shot up when Kevin Na played 18, but Na bogeyed and Els finished with a par to close it out. He now looks like the favorite going into Augusta. You never know in golf. Your game can change from week to week, but Els is playing better than anybody else right now. You’d have to say Woods has a shot. Retief Goosen is playing well, too. Jim Furyk, though not a very long hitter is playing well, also, after having won the Transitions last week.
