Ben Crane wins

Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines in San Diego. Finishes 13-under. Made it interesting at the end with a bogey on 17, but parred the par-five 18th for the victory. Brandt Snedeker of Vandy finishes with two others tied for second at 12-under. Crane takes home $954,000. Bill Haas leads Fed Ex Cup points. Haas won last week at Bob Hope.
This week at Riviera in LA for Northern Trust Open. Phil Mickelson is the defending champion. Mickelson finished the tourney at eight under, 19th.

Update on Dwight Freeney

Torn ligament in his ankle. Will be tough for him. I bet Drew Brees is a little bit happier today.

Kobe does it again

Hits a huge jump shot from the foul line with Ray Allen all over him as Lakers beat Celtics, 90-89. He’s the greatest clutch player since Michael Jordan, and may be the greatest of all time when he calls it a career. He’s 31, so he’s got some good years left. Has four titles and Jordan has six. Could catch him.
Ron Artest made a four-foot shot to cut the lead to 89-88, then took a charge from Paul Pierce to get the Lakers the ball back. Then Kobe made the shot with seven seconds left for the win. The Celts couldn’t convert at the end. Lakers looking great right now.

Tennessee 61, Florida 60

Florida drops to 15-6, 4-3 as they head to Tuscaloosa Thursday Night. Tennessee moved to 16-4, 4-2. Scotty Hopson hit a jumper with 21 seconds left to put the Vols ahead 61-60. Alex Tyus of the Gators attempted a five foot shot to possibly win it for the Gators with five seconds left, but it bounced off the backboard and just fell off the rim.
The Vols play at 8 p.m. on Thursday at LSU. The game is on ESPN2.

What a logjam in the SEC East with Vandy and Ky at 5-1, Tenn at 4-2, SC and Fl at 4-3. Great race going on there. Whoever can hold their home court and steal some on the road will win it.

Dwight Freeney

Questionable for Super Bowl 44 with an ankle injury according to John Clayton of ESPN. It’s not a high ankle sprain, but close to it and could keep him from playing. Another tough guy who will play if at all possible, so I wouldn’t rule him out, but his availability for the entire game and his effectiveness could be the question mark.

Fifty eight-player Parade All-American team

The 47th edition. State schools represented well.
Alabama commits on the team: QB Phillip Sims (6’2″, 225 great size, Chesapeake, Va.), linebacker C.J. Moseley 6’3″, 215, Theodore, Al), db Keenan Allen (6’2″, 205 Greensboro, NC)  and db DeMarcus Milliner (6’1″, 185 Millbrook, Al).

Auburn commit: Running back Robert Dyer (5’9″, 205, Little Rock, Ark.).

Targets for Bama and AU on the team: James Stone (6’4″, 300, Nashville).

for AU: Marcus Lattimore on it. He’s 6’1″, 220 from Byrnes High School in Duncan, SC.

Tebow and ‘Bama and AU players at Senior Bowl

Tebow was eight-of-12 for 50 yards and a fumble lost. Not that impressive. I’m not going to totally rule the guy out for the NFL, but it’s going to be hard. He’s a great competitor, but he may just not have the mechanics to make it throwing the ball in the league. If he has to make a position switch, he should.
Colin Peek caught a td pass. I think Peek can be another Jason Witten of the Dallas Cowboys. He’s just outstanding. A lot of Alabama seniors will get their shot next year. Cody needs to get his weight down. He’s got a lot of work ahead of him. Would like to see Roy Upchurch make a roster. He was a great team player, and, of course, Mike Johnson. He was the ultimate team player.

Antonio Coleman has to work hard, but he could be a player in the future in the league. Ben Tate could get his shot, too. I think he will. He needs to hold onto the ball though. Can’t fumble.
