Marc Mattioli from Stanford. Mark will coach safeties, and Coach Brent Maxie, who coached the secondary last year, will coach the cornerbacks. Mattioli and Derek have a background at Stanford. Mattioli has been a graduate asst at Stanford for the last four years. He and Derek worked together his first two years. Mattioli is a Tennessee native and played quarterback at Rhodes College in Memphis. Like the hire. I think he’s young, can coach and will be an excellent recruiter. Derek has now completed his staff for the 2015-16 season. Spring ball starts February 16th, so will have a lot more coming up. The spring game is March 21. We had 49 student-athletes make the first team academic All-SEC with 29 of them football players and the other 20 from women’s soccer. Quite an accomplishment. When you come to Vanderbilt to play football, you aren’t making a four-year decision, you’re making a 40 year decision.
A lot of 2016 prospects on the radar. Recruiting season never ends. Derek and the coaches getting crankin’ for 2016. A lot of good prospects in the hopper with a lot of visitors coming up in the next couple of weeks.
Tough one for bball last night at Memorial. We were 17-of-30 from the line (56%) and that’s why we lost, 76-73 in overtime to the Vols. We were 3-of-6 from the line in the closing minute. Guys like Riley, Wade and James, who are normally good free throw shooters, missed some. We would have won it if we had converted two more free throws. Just had some nerves there with our young guys, and especially in a huge rivalry game where the nerves are exacerbated. Excellent college basketball game if you didn’t care about the result. Still proud of the guys. They played their hearts out. The future is extremely bright. Hopefully, we can beat Alabama on the road Saturday (8 PM ET/7 PM CT on “duh U”) and go from there.
Carson will in fact get the start against Santa Clara tomorrow at 4 PM CT at the Hawk. Excited about this baseball team. Football and basketball have very bright futures and baseball is elite again. One day at a time though, starting today in practice and tomorrow in action.
Brandt at -3 through 7 at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro National at Pebble Beach, Spyglass Hill and Monterey Pennisula Country Club courses. Brandt is playing Monterey today. There is a nine way tie for the lead at -4. Jon Curran at -1. Expecting Brandt to play very well this week. His work with Butch Harmon is kicking in. Jon is getting better and better, too.
