A.J. Burnett was masterful and Pedro just didn’t have enough gas in the tank as the Yankees evened up the Series at one. Burnett was awesome, allowing just one run on four hits with nine strikeouts.
Burnett had been struggling a little bit with his control in the playoffs, but had it going in the game two. What looked like it could possibly be a Phillies blowout if they won last night, turned into a Series.
Pedro Martinez was good, but like C. C. Sabathia the night before for the Yanks, he threw too many pitches. The Yankee hitters worked him deep in the count, and, like Sabathia, he gave up two home runs. Charlie Manuel made a mistake putting him in in the seventh; he was gassed and should have come out. New York proceeded to score another run and then Rivera put it away in the eighth and the ninth. Rivera wasn’t totally in control, but was good enough.
The big story of the night was Burnett’s pitching and the home runs by Tex and Hideki Matsui. That’s all the Yanks needed and now they’re back in it.
