Vanderbilt football has arrived and is here to stay

Kyle Shurmur, 21-of-34 for 416 yards and two TDs, superb performance by our young quarterback. The future is here. Ralph Webb, what else can you say about the ultimate Vanderbilt man. Playing on an ankle that has been bothering him for the past month and a half, the junior warrior from Gainesville, FL. rushed for 114 yards on 21 carries with two TDs, with the last one a 28 yard scamper in which he ran over the Tennessee defensive back and plowed into the end zone. RW now has the all time VU rushing record set by legendary Zac Stacy. Ralph has now rushed for 3,231 yards and counting heading into our bowl game. Ralph set the freshman single season rushing record with 907 yards in 2014, the sophomore rushing record in 2015 with 1,152 yards, and is second on the junior single season rushing record with 1,173 yards. Zac set the junior record with 1,193 yards in 2011. Zac’s career mark in an epic career on the West End was 3,143 yards from 2009-12. Ralph is a legend in Vanderbilt football and there is a bowl game and a possible senior year from Ralph if he decides he wants to keep it going and play on a team in 2017 with huge goals.

Trent Sherfield, one of the hardest working players in college football, caught 9 passes for 184 yards. Caleb Scott, the acrobatic, superior wide out, caught 4 passes for 117 yards. Our 45 points in our 45-34 victory was the most points we’ve scored since 1971. Wow. And the amazing Zach Cunningham. I don’t know what else to say about this ultimate stud, as he just keeps on amazing the VU nation. Zach added 9 tackles and a fumble recovery, as usual. Ryan White, our superb leader at safety, led the team in tackles with 10. And our offensive line, led by fifth year senior center Barrett Gouger and fifth year senior left tackle Will Holden, dominated the line of scrimmage once again. You can’t give those guys and their coach, Cameron Norcross, enough credit for the job they’ve done this year. It’s been a spectacular display of line play. Dominance by an all star unit.

Just so proud for Coach Mason, Coach Ludwig and the staff. Coach Ludwig has our offense churning out the yards and the 7’s. It’s remarkable to watch. The job Coach Mason has done is nothing short of amazing. The ability to keep his team motivated through the tough times earlier this season and to have them believing they can be the football team he envisioned from the start of the season, is nothing short of spectacular. This football team is as good as any team in the SEC East. I would say that us and Kentucky are the best two teams in the SEC East right now. I’d love to get another shot at them. It’s thrilling to be a part of this.

A couple of things. Zach deserves SEC defensive player of the year and the Butkus Award as the nation’s best linebacker. Kyle deserves SEC offensive player of the week. We had some young players like conerbacks Joejuan Williams and  Donovan Sheffield and inside linebacker Josh Smith get very meaningful snaps, and three of our starting offensive linemen are sophomores and redshirt freshmen with plenty of backups who are young. C.J, Duncan made a huge catch and run on a third down deep in our own territory. We’ve got superb seniors, 26 of them, who deserve this so much for their work ethic and perseverance. Strength Coach James Dobson deserves a lot of credit. Our assistance, Coaches Ludwig, Norcross, Chris Marve, Osai Lewis, Cortez Hankton, Gerry Gdowski, Jeff Genuyk and Marc Mattioli were exceptional in the resurgence of Vanderbilt football. It was a collective effort by a group that believed they could go from good to great from the middle to the end of the season.

The bowls are interesting. I think Coach Mason and the players would go to Moscow to play in a a bowl game. I’d try to jump on the charter flight with them. Right now the options are the Birmingham Bowl, the Independence Bowl in Shreveport, the Advocare Texas Bowl in Houston, the Liberty Bowl in Memphis, and the Music City Bowl in Nashville. Just tell us where to go, we’ll be there. The bowls will make their selections this Sunday afternoon, so we’ll know then.

Just proud of our head coach, our assistants, and our players. Vanderbilt football is stellar and will be for a long time under Derek Mason.

Rivalry week 13 in college football featuring the 81st Iron Bowl

Kam Pettway ready to go

Jalen Hurts is the most crucial player for the Tide Saturday as quarterbacks tend to be

Jalen Hurts is the most crucial player for the Tide Saturday as quarterbacks tend to be

Kam Pettway is good to go with his 1,106 yards and 7 touchdowns, a huge boost to the Auburn offense as he’ll team up with Kerryon Johnson, who has battled some injuries this season, but looks close to 100% and rushed for 823 yards and 11, sevens. Sean White is up in the air. It may be Jeremy Johnson under center with stuff for John Franklin III. The Crimson Tide looks good to go for the most part. Don’t know of any serious injuries, though there have been some injury issues on the offensive line. Should be another classic. Rivalry games abound throughout the country with conference championship and playoff implications all on the line. Should be quite a Thanksgiving weekend of college football. Here’s a look at the action with predictions enclosed.

Last week: 19-9

The Crimson Tide struggled some in the first half against Chattanooga last Saturday, but the Mocs had a good defense. Jalen Hurts and the offense got it together in the second half with Jalen completing 15 of 21 passes for 136 yards and three, 7’s for the game. He also ran for 68 yards. Damien Harris played well, running for 91 yards and a 7. Alabama holds a 44-25-1 advantage over Auburn, and this one is in Tuscaloosa, so it’s a major advantage for the Crimson Tide. But Kirk Herbstreit said before the season that Auburn’s defense would keep them in every football game and it has. Kam Pettway has developed into an outstanding running back and Kerryon Johnson is one of my favorite players in the SEC. I love his effort and energy. The Crimson Tide’s defense is as good as S has ever had and that’s an extremely high bar. But I’m expecting a good, competitive football game. Jeremy Johnson could get the call for the Tigers with Sean White questionable. I like the Crimson Tide like everybody else, but the Tigers’ defense will keep it close, and give Auburn a shot. They’ll have to figure out how to run the ball and move it against the best defense in the country in the last several years, but if they do, they’ll give themselves a chance..

Stellar matchup between two teams in the thick of things for the college football playoff. Jim Harbaugh’s starting quarterback, Wilton Speights, has a broken collarbone, but Jim wants him to play if at all possible. It’ll be hard, so he’ll probably have to go with John O’Korn, who struggled last week against Indiana at the Big House. But Michigan’s defense will keep them in it. Ohio State plays good defense as well, and the quarterback and skilled players edge goes to J.T. Barrett, redshirt freshman running back Mike Weber, who has rushed for 1,046 yards and eight TDs, and  junior tailback Curtis Samuel, who has rushed for 650 yards and 7 TDs. I like this to be a hard fought, highly physical, defensive contest, with the Buckeys a few more plays than the Wolverines. If Ohio State wins and Penn State loses to Michigan State, Ohio State will go to Big Ten Championship game. If Michigan wins, they go to Indianapolis the following Saturday to play Wisconsin or Nebraska. If Wisconsin beats Minnesota, they’ll be the west representative. If Nebraska wins and Wisconsin loses, they’ll go. I expect a backyard brawl in Columbus Saturday.

Coach Jim McElwain and his Gators went into Baton Rouge last Saturday as a double digit underdog and upset LSU improbably. It was poetic justice as LSU athletic director Joe Alleva had jerked Florida around about the game. The game was supposed to be at Florida originally, but the Hurricane postponed it and LSU wouldn’t play it unless it was at their stadium. The Gators got the last laugh though. They only play 11 regular season games this season because, like LSU, they had to cancel another regularly scheduled game, Florida against Presbyterian and LSU against South Alabama. Glad they did. That was an epic last Saturday. Now they get to play the LSU game in Gainesville the next two years, so it really worked out well for the Gators. Coach Mac can be a little uncomfortable to listen to in interviews, but I like him a lot and he’s a really good football coach. I like the 7 1/2 point underdog Gators to get it done over the Noles Saturday Night.

This game has major playoff implications for the Tigers, and means a ton to the Gamecocks, who, under first year coach Will Muschamp, are going bowling. Will has needed to change the culture of the program that really floundered at the end of the Steve Spurrier regime. I see Will getting it done in Columbia in the upcoming years, but I like the Tigers of Clemson to get the job done on Saturday Night and survive and advance.

The Rebs looked like they had it together two weeks ago when super freshman Shea Patterson led them to an electric victory over A&M at College Station with an amazing fourth quarter comeback. But last week, the Vandy defense had Shea running all over the field and his receivers dropped a massive number of passes. But I like the home team here. State’s had a tough year, but I like their program. They will be back, but it’ll be interesting to see if Dan Mullen stays or leaves for what he’d consider a greener pasture, though I think he’s lucky to have the job in Starkville.

The Cardinals looked to me like an elite team heading into the Houston game last Thursday Night, but the Cougars blasted them and dispelled the belief that they are elite and that Bobby Petrino is an elite coach. He’s a good coach, but not a great coach. He’s not on S’s, Urb’s, or Jim’s level, And many others for that matter. He’s also a pretty lousy guy. He’ll win here because he’s a better coach than Mike Stoops and his team is better.

Brett Bielema’s team has confused me with their inconsistency. I’ve picked them to beat Auburn and LSU and they’ve gotten blasted. And then I pick against them at State last Saturday, and they blast State. They’re a confusing team. I do like their team though. They blasted Florida at home and had a really good victory earlier in the season at TCU, which, at the time, looked very good. Brett does a good job in Fayetteville. To make Arkansas elite is a challenge, but he’s doing a really good job there overall.

The interesting thing about this game is that the Broncos need to win and need Wyoming to lose, so they can be the west representative in the Mountain West Conference Championship game. Wyoming plays at New Mexico, a pretty good team. If Boise State wins, but Wyoming wins, Boise would probably be out of the New Year’s Six bowl.  The highest Group of 5 team at the end of the season in the playoff top 25 rankings goes to the Cotton Bowl. The “Group of Five” is composed of the American Athletic Conference, Conference USA, the Mid-American Conference, the Mountain West, and the Sun Belt. if Boise loses they would be overtaken by either No. 20 Houston, No. 21 Western Michigan or No. 25 Navy, pending their respective outcomes Saturday. I’m a believer in Houston, but Navy beat them. They’re both better than Western Michigan in my opinion. Navy is the wild card if they win Saturday at SMU, which has become a pretty tough out under Chad Morris, and then beats Army soundly in the Army-Navy game a week from Saturday. I like the Academy to be the Group of 5 rep in the Cotton Bowl if that happens.

May be worth staying up later to watch this one. I watched the end of the Wyoming-San Diego State game last Saturday, and it was a classic with Wyoming winning 34-33 after San Diego State scored a touchdown with no time left on the clock, but went for two and didn’t get it as Wyoming knocked the throw back pass down in the end zone to preserve the victory. Craig Bohl, in his second year, has Wyoming at 8-3 and 6-1 in the Mountain West, and with a victory, they earn a trip to the Mountain West Championship game a week from Saturday. But New Mexico is 5-2 in the Mountain Division and 7-4 overall, and a pretty good team under Bob Davie. New Mexico lost to Boise State, so if New Mexico wins, Boise State would host San Diego State in the MWC Championship game. If Wyoming wins, they would host the Mountain West Championship game versus San Diego State, which will win the west. Wyoming could make a case for a New Year’s Six bowl by winning out. So some classic stuff going on in college football this weekend. Happy Thanksgiving and enjoy the games.

Phenomenal effort by our football team, Commit, Zach, DP

Bruno Reagan and the o line were spectacular

Bruno Reagan and the o line were spectacular

Arnold Tarpley (left), Taurean Ferguson and our secondary were phenomenal against Ole Miss

Arnold Tarpley (left), Taurean Ferguson and our secondary were phenomenal against Ole Miss

Our football team played their best game to date under Derek Mason in a tremendous victory over the Ole Miss Rebels, 38-17, before 27,763 at Vanderbilt Stadium Saturday Night. It was spectacular.

Game balls go to the entire team and, of course, Coach Mason and the staff. It’s hard to single out a particular player because the whole team was so dominant in this football game. Ole Miss quarterback Shea Patterson put on a superb performance against A&M the week before in College Station and everyone, including me, picked Ole Miss to win. I was wrong and I couldn’t have been happier. I believe in this football team, this staff, and I got away from my belief last week. I apologize to Coach Mason and the team. That won’t happen again.

I’ll start with the offensive line. From left tackle to right tackle, respectively, Will Holden, Ean Pfeifer, Barrett Gouger, Bruno Reagan and Justin Skule were dominant, and just out-physicaled the Ole Miss defense. Our skilled players were tremendous, but it all started with how seniors Holden and Gouger and the younger three guys opened holes for Ralph, protected Kyle and  dominated the line of scrimmage. More than terrific effort by this group once again. Coach Cameron Norcross has brought a toughness and physicality to our offensive line. He’s been fantastic. Love this line.

Ralph was typical Ralph. He’s been bothered by a sore ankle the past month but has been toughing it out and playing through it. But Saturday he was back to being Ralph Webb, rushing for 123 yards on 20 carries with three TDs. Ralph is something like 25 yards from breaking Zac Stacy’s all time rushing mark at VU. He’s also a redshirt junior, so we have another year of Ralph, along with a ton of other guys. Sophomore quarterback Kyle Shurmur was off the charts good as well. Kyle was 17 of 30 for 273 yards and 2 TDs, one to junior Trent Sherfield, and the other to freshman Bailey McElwain. Superb effort by Kyle and the receivers. Trent and Bailey did some super things, and  wrs C.J. Duncan, Caleb Scott and tight endJared Pinkney were awesome. Darrius Sims made his presence known again. Darrius had 10 carries for 50 yards as we are using him more and more in the running game and he caught 2 passes for 53 yards. He’s just been a phenomenal player for us. What a super football player Darrius is. He made a beautiful catch over the middle and ran it for 39 yards on a perfect Kyle pass. Love the Darrius explosive play factor. This offense under Coach Andy Ludwig has blossomed and there is another game and very hopefully two more to get even more explosive and use that toughness that we have running the ball with our dominant offensive line and Ralph, Khari, Dallas Rivers and Josh Crawford.

And our defense just wore out Shea Patterson. He was running for his life all night with our defense putting massive pressure on him and putting lick after lick on him. Zach made a huge fumble recovery. It was a beautiful scoop pickup off a lost ball by Ole Miss tailback Akeem Judd. Nickel back Taurean Ferguson posted eight tackles, linebacker Jordan Griffin added six, Oren Burks also finished with 6 and played with superb leadership like Oren always does, and Zach posted five. But it was a collective effort by our defense. Adam Butler, Jonathan Wynn and our d line were constantly getting the heat on Patterson. Zach and others were playing the role of a spy on Patterson and never let him break one off. Our secondary, Taurean, Torren McGaster, LaDarius Wiley and Arnold Tarpley were superior. We put pressure on their receivers all night, causing their really good receivers to drop balls.

Coach Mason did another spectacular job with the defense. This may have been his best work in three years and that’s a pretty high bar. I just loved the way our defense and our entire football team played Saturday Night.

We’ve got a chance to make a bowl with 5 wins because of our off the charts APR numbers. Our kids do so well in school and there may not be enough six win teams to fill the bowl slots, so our APR numbers will get us in even if we don’t get 6 victories. And that is a distinct possibility.

But we don’t want that. We want six wins and we want it against our rival from some other place. Coach Mason embraces this rivalry. We want this game. We want our seniors to go out with 6 wins and a 7 with a bowl win. We want to get the extra 20 days of  practice for a bowl game to prepare for next season and win a bowl game again for our super seniors, and it is huge for recruiting to go to a bowl game. I’ve got something on recruiting coming up in a moment.

So we want to take care of business Saturday Night in Vanderbilt Stadium at 6:30 PM CT/7:30 PM ET on the SEC Network. They have a good quarterback in Joshua Dobbs, a really good running back in Alvin Kamara and some good skilled players. Their defense is talented. They’re big and physical. So we have to have a super week of practice to get ready for this hugely important game Saturday Night. I like what I’m seeing out of this football team. If we play like we played against Ole Miss we’re going to like the result Saturday Night and beat this intense rival.

Super safety Nico Bolden becomes the 13th member of our 2017 class

We got a stellar commit  yesterday from 6’4″, 205 pound solid three star safety Nico Bolden. Nico is our 13th commit for the 2017 class. I watched Nico’s film and he took two kicks back to house for 90+ yards, he is a super punt returner and  Nico is a superior hitter as a safety and an explosive player at wide out and on jet sweeps. Nico is out of St. Paul, Minnesota, Woodbury Senior High School. He joins solid three star corners Randall Haynie, 6’0″, 178 and Adam Sparks, 6’0″, 170, and safety Tae Daley, 5’11”, 175, as our secondary commits. Coach Mason loves his secondary and these are superb additions to a loaded group for 2017. I love this class and there are more to come.

Zach Cunningham

The man is a finalist for the Butkus Award

The man is a finalist for the Butkus Award

Zach was named a finalist for the Butkus Award, given to the best linebacker in the country. The Butkus Foundation will announce their 32nd Award winner on or before Tuesday, December 6th. Hopeful that our spectacular linebacker and first class young man wins this highly prestigious award. Zach is more than deserving. Zach leads all linebackers in the country with 16.5 tackles for loss. Zach also shares the conference lead with three fumble recoveries. He is the first Commodore to post back to back 100+ tackles since Jamie Winborn accomplished that in 1999-2000. His fourth and one stop of Isaiah McKenzie of Georgia won the game for us in Athens this season. Zach came out of nowhere to blast McKenzie and secure our tremendous victory. And his amazing jump over the center and block of Daniel Carlson’s field goal attempt was one for the ages in Vanderbilt lore and to me the best play of the college football season so far as he gave our team a chance to tie Auburn late in the game at Auburn in a game in which we were a double digit underdog.

Joining Zach as finalists are Kendall Beckwith of LSU, Jarrad Davis of Florida. Reuben Foster of Alabama and Josey Jewell of Iowa. All of these guys are deserving, but Zach’s work this season is so superb. Obviously I’m biased, but to me Zach’s resume is the best. Pulling hard for our stud from Pinson, Alabama. Zach has a very bright future in this game, and wants to go to a bowl game like the rest of our football team does. Let’s beat the Vols.

This baseball program has produced a lot of spectacular players but David is the signature guy for Vanderbilt baseball

Dave donated $2.5 million to the baseball facility which has completed the necessary funding for the project and it is all systems go now. Typical DP. One of the best pitchers in baseball, David has a special place in his heart for Corbs and Vanderbilt University. He’s been a superb ambassador for our program. Proud to have him represent us in the major leagues and looking forward to some more super years from DP. Excited for Dave and the Bosox in 2017. Dansby, Curt Casali and Mike “Yaz” Yastremski were in attendance for the press conference last Friday. What a representative of the best baseball program in the country. Ready for our team to get cranking in January of 2017. Also ready to see David, Dans, Sonny, Carson, Pedro, hopefully Mike, Curt, hopefully Yaz, who is with the Baltimore Orioles organization and played for the Triple A Norfolk Tides this season and has a shot to make the big squad in Baltimore next season, and many of our other guys compete in the major leagues. David is a dedicated Vanderbilt man. Proud to have him as one of our guys. Our baseball facility will be the crown jewel in college baseball. It’s going to be a masterpiece.

Basketball lost last night to Bucknell. We play Butler Thursday Night at 7 PM CT/8 PM ET in the Continental Tire Las Vegas Invitational in Las Vegas, Nevada. Fox Sports 1 will televise. Butler is outstanding, so it’ll be a major challenge. We have a lot of good players on our team led by Luke Kornet, Matthew Fisher- Davis and Riley LaChance, we just need to figure out our chemistry. it’s a work in progress, but we’ll get there by conference time. It’s a challenge against a very good Butler team Thursday Night, but I’m excited to see our guys compete again and keep getting better. We’re 2-2 right now.

The women’s basketball team got a huge 77-73 victory over Duke Sunday Night at home. Duke has been to Final Fours recently and is one of the standard bearer programs of women’s  basketball. Super job by Coach Stephanie White and the girls. We have a chance to be pretty special.

Bama, AU rev up for Iron Bowl, key SEC, national games

Dana Holgerson and the Mountaineers try to pull off the upset over OU in Morgantown

Dana Holgerson and the Mountaineers try to pull off the upset over OU in Morgantown

The No. 1 ranked Crimson Tide kept it cookin last Saturday at home against State in a 51-3 victory. Super freshman Jalen Hurts completed 28 of 37 passes for 347 yards and four 7’s. Jalen also ran for 100 yards and a TD. Jalen should be in the Heisman conversation with what he’s done this year. He’s been terrific. ArDarius Stewart caught 8 passes for 156 yards and 3 TDs. Quite a football player. The defense was at its usual standard of excellence. This Crimson Tide machine looks unstoppable right now, but they have two more regular season games to take care of starting this Saturday at home against an overmatched Chattanooga team, then the Auburn Tigers, and then the SEC Championship game. There is still little margin for error, but this fantastic football team doesn’t look like it makes any errors. The organization keeps on producing.

AU lost a really tough one between the hedges to the Dawgs last Saturday, 13-7. Sean White played with a banged up right shoulder and shouldn’t have played. I know Sean wants to compete and help his team win and I admire that, but John Franklin III would have given the Tigers a better shot in the second half with Kamron Pettway out and Kerryon Johnson probably at 50 percent. The defense did their part. It was still a really good football game, and Kirby and the Dawgs earned a hard fought victory in the 120th matchup of  the Deep South’s oldest rivalry. Georgia now holds a 57-55-8 advantage in the series. But the Tigers have three more opportunities, this Saturday at Jordan-Hare versus Alabama A&M, next Saturday in Tuscaloosa, and in a bowl game. The Tigers need to win this weekend, do their best at Bryant-Denny, and win their bowl game to get momentum in recruiting and for 2017. So they’ve got a lot to play for.

One of the top four teams in the playoff rankings is highly questionable to me. Bama is a slam dunk at No.1 and Ohio State is a solid No.2. The next two get interesting. I won’t argue with Clemson at No.4, but I disagree 100 percent with Michigan at No. 3. They lost to double digit underdog Iowa, and while Iowa is a pretty solid Big Ten team, Michigan doesn’t belong in the top four after that. I like Louisville at 4 and Clemson at 3. Still believe in Clemson. This idea of the Big Ten getting two teams in the playoff is comical. Louisville should be in the top four. They would waste Penn State, Wisconsin and beat Michigan. Lamar Jackson is a game changer. There is still some football left, but if the committee wants the best four teams, if all of these four teams take care of business, that should be the final four. Clemson survived Louisville at Clemson. I picked Clemson to beat Louisville, but it was a hard fought, knock down, drag out contest in which Lamar Jackson was unstoppable. The Cardinals crushed Florida State at home. They’ve taken care of business in their other games, though they’ve been close @ Virginia and at home against Wake Forest, at least for three quarters, but those teams played well. I like the Cardinals in the playoff with the other three. That’s the best four in my opinion. The committee ought to do the right thing and take the best four regardless of conference championships. I like to use the eye test to determine the best four teams, and my eyes are telling me unequivocally that these are the best 4 teams.

Onto the predictions for week 12.

Troy 42, Arkansas State 35

Troy is 8-1 and one of the most underrated stories in college football this season. Their only loss is to No.3 Clemson @ Clemson, 30-24. They deserve a good bowl if they can finish strong in the Sun Belt, but they’ll be tested tonight against a pretty hot Red Wolves team, which has won its last five in a row after an 0-4 start. Troy has games @ Texas State and @ Georgia Southern to finish off the season. This is a really good football team under second year coach Neal Brown, who’s done a spectacular job.

Friday

No. 20 Boise State 56, UNLV 24

The interesting thing about this game is the Broncos are the highest ranked Group of Five team that would qualify for a New Year’s Six Bowl if they can finish that way. The only problem for Boise State is even if they win out, if Wyoming beats double digit favorite San Diego State Saturday and win out, Wyoming would win the Mountain Division of the Mountain West and play San Diego State in the Mountain West championship game most likely canceling out Boise State’s chances of a New Year’s Six Bowl. Plus San Diego State is 9-1 with their only loss coming at South Alabama, and the Jags annihilated them surprisingly, so if San Diego State were to beat Boise State in the Mountain West Championship game, that would knock Boise out as well. San Diego State is a good team. South Alabama has been good at times this season, and has quality players and a quality head coach in Joey Jones, so this is an interesting scenario in the Mountain West. You still have Western Michigan hanging around at 10-0 and Navy to me is the most underrated team in the country. The Academy can make some noise if they keep winning. So some pretty serious drama forthcoming outside the playoff.

Saturday

No. 16 LSU 24, No. 23 Florida 20

LSU running back Derrius Guice has been mouthing off this week about how LSU should have beaten Alabama. That trash talk after the game is nonsensical and not very smart. I see the Gators giving the Tigers a good game here.

No. 19 Tennessee 34, Missouri 24

The Vols need to win this game and next week’s game against Vandy to win the East, coupled with a Florida loss to LSU.

Ole Miss 42, Vanderbilt 17

Shea Patterson and Ole Miss put on a performance for the ages in the fourth quarter last week at A&M in a Rebels’ 29-28 victory. It was amazing. Hugh Freeze is one of the top 7 coaches in college football in my opinion. I’d go with:  1. S, 2. Urb, 3. Dabo, 4. Jim,  5. Petrino, though he’s not my favorite personality, 6. Hugh, 7. Kirby Smart. Kirby is an up and comer for sure. Hugh did his best job of coaching in this game five years ago when he recruited the all world five star dual threat quarterback from Shreveport, LA. It was an amazing victory for the Rebels, who have endured a very difficult season. Huge fan of Hugh Freeze. See greatness for Shea, Jalen Hurts and Jacob Eason in the next two to three years.

No. 25 Texas A&M 48, Texas San Antonio 7

11 AM CT/ Noon ET, ESPNU

Kevin Sumlin is a good coach and I really like him as a person. He’s a really good guy. But I don’t know if his coaching style works that well in college. He seems more like a Bill Belichick, Mike Tomlin, NFL coach. I like him as a coach and I’m not giving up on him at A&M, but I see him doing better in the NFL. Maybe that’s where he wants to be, but he may want to stay at A&M and see if he and his program can somehow overcome the immense hurdles of Alabama and the rest of the west next year and in the upcoming years. It’s just hard for Sumlin and others to beat Saban and Alabama. So he may want to try the NFL waters. I don’t know if he could get a head coaching job there, but I could see him doing a good job on Sundays. I do like him a lot as a person and as a football coach. He may be better suited for the pro game though.

No. 14 West Virginia 35, No. 9 Oklahoma 31

I watched West Virginia and I trust them. I don’t trust Big game Boob in big games, and I really like this West Virginia team. The Mountaineers knock off the Sooners in Morgantown in an upset and matriculate into the playoff conversation.

No. 10 Colorado 38,  No. 22 Washington State 35

This should be a really good football game pitting two quality teams with Mike McIntyre and his Buffaloes team just edging out Mike Leach and the Cougars, who are 7-0 in the Pac-12 North. Colorado states its case for the playoff with a victory here, but have to face Utah next Saturday, but at home.

2:30 PM CT/3:30 PM ET, FOX

No. 2 Ohio State 35, Michigan State 28

Urb gets a scare. I see the Spartans with a chance of knocking off Penn State next week at Happy Valley and ruining the Nittany Lions chances of a Big Ten East title and a shot at the playoff. Still believe Mark Dantonio is a really good football coach, and they’ll play with a lot of pride these next two weeks.

Game Day is going to be in Kalamazoo for the game. P.J. Fleck has done a spectacular job and his team is very much in the hunt for a New Year’s Six Bowl. Fleck is a real up and comer in college football.

San Diego State 38, Wyoming 35

This is actually a super game with both teams trying to win the Mountain West and maybe make a run at a New Year’s Six Bowl, at least the Aztecs who are 9-1. The Aztecs will need some help, but with the chaos we experienced last week and the anticipated chaos ahead, they’re in it. Really like both of these teams. Two super running backs in Donnell Pumphrey of the Aztecs of San Diego State, who has rushed for 1,779 yards and 14 TDs, and Brian Hill of the Cowboys, who has rushed for 1,417 yards and 16 TDs. Craig Bohl is in his second year at Wyoming after winning multiple FCS National Championships at North Dakota State. He’s superb, as is Rocky Long, who in 6 years at San Diego State, has a 52-24 record.

2:30 PM CT/3:30 PM ET, CBS Sports Network

No. 6 Washington 45, Arizona State 17

The Huskies are still a factor in the playoff picture. Not counting them out. If they win here and @ Washington State next week, then in the Pac 12 title game, they’ll make a strong case. Still a very good football team. USC  was just awesome against them last week.

6:30 PM CT/7:30 PM ET, FOX

No. 12 Utah 38, Oregon 31

The Utes still very much alive in the Pac 12, and will win it if they can win Saturday, next week at Colorado and in the Pac 12 title game. They’ll be in the Rose Bowl if they do so. The semifinal games are at the Peach Bowl and the Fiesta Bowl this year on December 31st, and the national championship game is in Tampa at Raymond James Stadium on January 9th, but the Utes can play in the grandaddy of them all, the Rose Bowl, which would be really solid. They’re not out of the playoff picture totally either.

1 PM CT/ 2 PM ET, Pac-12 Network

No. 13 USC 45, UCLA 30

USC is one of the hottest teams in college football, and I like the way they’re trending both for this year and next year. They probably won’t win the Pac 12 South, but they’re still in it. Colorado is 6-1, USC is 6-2 and Utah is 5-2. A Utah loss this Saturday, a Utah upset victory over Colorado next Saturday and the Trojans are in because they defeated Colorado earlier this season. They did lose to the Utes @Utah, so they’re going to have to get lucky. Jim Mora is really having a tough time in Tinseltown. He seems more suited for the professional game as well. I like him as a coach, he’s just been decimated by injuries the last couple of years and maybe college is just not the right place for him. Believe in him as a coach, but maybe at the next level.

No. 24 Stanford 42, California 31

The Cardinal have come alive recently. David Shaw changed quarterbacks and went to the guy who should have started to begin with, Keller Chryst. He’s outstanding and Christian McCaffrey has been quietly rolling up the yards lately.

4:30 PM CT/5:30 PM ET, Pac-12 Network

Navy 42, East Carolina 35

Really like this Midshipmen team. They should get in the top 25 and should have a shot at a New Year’s Six Bowl if they keep winning. They are 7-2, and have beaten some good teams in the American Conference including Houston, which was ranked in the top 10 at the time. I really like this team and with some more chaos, they could be playing on Jan. 2nd.

Coach Mason and the team go for Victory No.5 in Columbia tomorrow

Coach Mason takes his team into Columbia, Missouri for a 2:30 PM CT/3:30 PM ET kickoff against the Missouri Tigers. The game will be televised by the SEC Network. VU comes into the game at 4-5 overall, and 1-4 in the SEC. Missouri is 2-7 overall and 0-5 in the SEC, but came off a solid effort at South Carolina in a 31-21 loss. They’ve got talent and are dangerous. We are coming off a heroic effort at Auburn, losing 23-16, in a game which included a highly questionable overturn of a fumble call on the field with us leading 13-10. With that fumble caused by Zach in the third quarter and recovered by us, we would have really had the momentum. But the replay official didn’t see it that way, unfortunately. We still had a shot of winning at the end, after Zach made an amazing leap over the snapper and blocked Daniel Carlson’s field goal attempt. It was an epic moment in college football this season. Kyle and the offense moved us down the field, but we had an unfortunate interception at the end. Still super effort by Zach, Kyle, the offensive line, the wide receivers, the whole team. As Bill Belichick said after a Monday Night Patriots loss a couple of years ago, it’s “Onto Missouri.” The Patriots won the Super Bowl two years ago when Bill said that.

And this is a colossal game for us. Coach Mason said in his press conference our goals are in front of us and they start with beating Missouri tomorrow. Continued good play by the offensive line, Kyle excelling in the passing game, great work by Ralph and Khari and maybe Josh, and superb work by Zach and the defense gets us over the top in Columbia.

VU Basketball

The Bryce Drew era opens tonight in Annapolis, Maryland in the Veteran’s Classic as our basketball team opens its season up against the Marquette Golden Eagles at 5:30 CT/6:30 ET on CBS Sports Network.

Talked to Bryce last Thursday and he’s pumped. We have only 10 scholarship players on our roster, so we need to stay healthy, but Coach Drew’s goal this season is to win every game and make a deep run in March. He’s going to be a special coach for us. We have Luke Kornet, our 7’1″, 250 pound senior center. leading the way along with Matthew Fisher-Davis, Riley LaChance, Jeff Roberson, Nolan Cressler, Joe Toye, Camron Justice, redshirt freshman Djerry Baptiste, 6’10”, 240, and freshman Payton Willis, a 6’4″ point guard, and 6’8″, 220 freshman power forward Clevon Brown. Will be an exciting team. Marquette finished 20-13 last year and have a good team returning. It’s a tough matchup for our guys, and will be a test right out of the gates.

Coach Drew signed three, 4-star players in the early signing period; 6’9″, 230 pound power forward-center Ejike Obinna from Ashburn, VA., 6’2″, 180 shooting guard Maxwell Evans from Houston Texas, and 6’1″, 175 pound point guard Saben Lee from Tempe, Arizona. Super recruiting by Coach Drew and the staff securing these talented players from the east coast and southwest. They all look like superb players.

But I’m excited for 2016-17, too. We’ve got good players and we can do some stellar work this season and continue that into March. It starts tonight.

Tigers in a gigantic one in Athens, Tide aims to take care of business, massive SEC match-ups, national scene

Two phenomenal defensive players, Carl Lawson (above), and Jonathan Allen, look to lead their teams towards a blockbuster Iron Bowl

Two phenomenal defensive players, Carl Lawson (above), and Jonathan Allen, look to lead their teams towards a blockbuster Iron Bowl

“The Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry” kicks off at 2:30 PM CT/3:30 ET in Athens Saturday as the Auburn Tigers face the Georgia Bulldogs in a key game for Auburn and always a colossal game for both teams. Georgia holds a 56-55-8 lead in the series now heading into its 120th matchup. It shows how competitive this rivalry is. The Dawgs have won the last two, winning 20-13 last year at Auburn. But this is a different Auburn team this season. Should be an epic. Georgia still has outside hopes of winning the East though they are very slim. But Kirby Smart wants this one for sure.

The Crimson Tide take on Mississippi State in Bryant-Denny at 11 AM CT tomorrow. S said after the LSU victory last Saturday that every game is a playoff game now and this is the next critical game on the schedule. State pulled off the major upset of A&M last Saturday in Starkvegas and looks to somehow get in the end zone against this historically good Alabama defense.

Key SEC games in Fayetteville, College Station, Knoxville and Gainesville. It’s a blockbuster Saturday in the conference. There are some national games with playoff implications, as it’s time to dig in and start talking about the playoffs. Here’s a look at the action.

Last week: 15-2

CBS

Verne, Gary, Allie

The Tigers have a couple of their most important players banged up as running back Kamryn Pettway, who’s already rushed for over 1,000 yards, has a pulled muscle in his leg. Gus didn’t specify, but it looked like a hamstring, maybe a calf. He’s day to day and questionable at this point, but I expect him to play. Sean White is still bothered by a shoulder injury, but was a full participant at practice this week, and is good to go. Kerryon Johnson is finally healthy and that’s a good thing. The Tigers defense is good to go as always.

Georgia still has the super running back tandem of  Nick Chubb and Sony Michel, and freshman quarterback Jacob Eason is going to be a superstar in this league for the next three years. The X factor for the Dawgs is Isiah McKenzie. He can take it to the house on punts, passes and jet sweeps.

Should be an excellent football game, but I like the Tigers to keep the momentum going as they survive and advance from Athens.

The Crimson Tide, as usual, is matriculating towards December and January as this through the roof good team hosts a better than people think State team. Sophomore Nick Fitzgerald is going to be an excellent quarterback for Dan Mullen and State in the future. He ran for two touchdowns, 182 yards, and passed for two more 7’s. I’m not positive Mullen is going to stay in Starkville after this season. He hired Jimmy Sexton last week, so he could very well be looking around with Oregon a possibility. He’s done a good job at State, but he’s got a good situation there, and I wouldn’t call him elite. Fitzgerald is talented, but he’s going to have a lot of trouble with Jonathan Allen, Tim Williams, Ryan Anderson, Rueben Foster and company Saturday on the road. Jalen Hurts is the coolest customer in college football and a dynamic, superb quarterback. Calvin Ridley and ArDarius Stewart should have good games, and I expect S and Kiff to run the ball and really try to establish that part of the offense with Damien Harris and Bo Scarbrough, if Bo is healthy. The Crimson Tide advances for another shot to win it all.

This game would have been another major blockbuster if Chad Kelly hadn’t been lost for the season with a knee injury for the Rebs. A&M lost Trevor Knight to a season ending shoulder injury, so that takes away some of the classic nature of this game. Still there are a lot of good players on offense for both teams, Ole Miss has their exceptional receivers and A&M is also loaded with playmakers led by the awesome Christian Kirk, who took a punt back 90+ yards last week for a TD against State, though the Aggies were upset and their chances of getting in the playoff done. Hugh Freeze could take  the redshirt off of Shea Patterson, the five star superstar freshman quarterback, who Freeze and the coaches are expecting epic things from in the future. Or he could stick with Jason Pellerin, a redshirt freshman, who is more of a serviceable quarterback, but not an explosive signal caller. A&M faces the same thing with Jake Hubenak. He’s decent, but he’s not going to make many explosive plays. They’ll both need help from their running games and their guys on the perimeter. Like the Aggies to  get more 7’s against a depleted Ole Miss defense. I thought after the Bama game that the Rebels were the second best team in the conference, but they were devastated by injuries on defense and just couldn’t recover. But Hugh Freeze is an outstanding coach and they’ll be competitive in this game.

A&M 31, Ole Miss 28

I like Will and the Gamecocks to give Coach Mac and his Gators everything they want. The Gamecocks to me are the surprise team of the SEC, and Will and offensive coordinator Kurt Roper have found their quarterback for this year and the future in freshman Jake Bentley from Opelika, AL. Bentley has been superb so far. The Gators have quarterback problems as their starter Luke Del Rio, who was struggling any way, is lost for the season, and Coach Mac will start Austin Appleby and see how he does then go from there. He’s got a talented freshman in Feleipe Franks who is ready to go if Appleby falters. I like this game to be super game, with the Gators doing enough to survive in the Swamp.  The Gators still have their SEC East goals in front of them, so I like them to edge out a team whose future looks extremely bright under Will Muschamp.

I see this as another tight game. The Wildcats have been a surprising team. Mark Stoops has recruited well since he’s been at UK, and they have some outstanding running backs. No.4 Washington 38, No. 20 USC 28

Urb and the Buckeyes haven’t played a massively hard schedule, but it’s been tougher than Michigan’s and they’ve been to Oklahoma and annihilated the Sooners. This team is young, improving and gearing up a for a colossal showdown in Columbus vs the Wolverines.

No.6 Louisville 45, Wake Forest 24

6 PM CT, ESPN 2

Louisville may put a pounding on Wake Forest though the Demon Deacons have played good ball this year under second year coach Dave Clawson who came from Bowling Green where he had a lot of success. He’s doing a really good job at Wake and has them bowl eligible at 6-3, but this is a lot to ask @ Louisville.  Louisville remains a prominent candidate for the playoff. They’ll need some help, but they’re certainly worthy.

No. 10 Penn State 34, Indiana 31

I’m not buying Penn State as a playoff team, but they’ll get by the Hoosiers, who are ready for round ball.

No. 12 Colorado 30, Arizona 17

I really like this Buffaloes team. I don’t see them as a playoff team, but a team that can win the Pac-12 South, if they can get by Utah at home on Nov. 26th, and then play in the Rose Bowl.

Troy 41, App State 35

Like the Midshipmen to move to 7-2 on the season at Annapolis against a favored and very explosive offensive football team in Tulsa. Ken Niumatalolo does as good a job as any coach in the country with the high academic standards he faces at the Naval Academy. Super coach who’s always going to have highly motivated players. Like the Naval Academy to pull off the upset as a 1 1/2 point underdog.

We were the better team; got robbed by a blown replay call

Zach Cunningham is the best linebacker in college football in my opinion

Zach Cunningham is the best linebacker in college football in my opinion

Coach Mason said he was going to talk to Commissioner Sankey and Steve Shaw, head of SEC refs, about that blown overturn by the replay ref in our game with Auburn. The SEC has always strictly interpreted the “indisputable evidence,” rule in determining whether to  overturn the call on the field. There was no doubt that was not indisputable evidence that would lead to an overturn. I mean right as Kam Pettway was going to the ground he fumbled. Zach made another superb play. More on Zach later. It was pretty deflating and pretty hard to recover from when I was watching the game. I know it was hard on the players.

But it didn’t go our way. Still a phenomenal effort by our football team. Zach’s leaping block of Daniel Carlson’s field goal attempt with Auburn leading 23-16 and trying to put the game away, was as good as it gets in football. Kam Chancellor did that for the Seahawks back in 2013 when they won the Super Bowl. He did it a couple of times that year. He, Russell Wilson, Richard Sherman, Marshawn Lynch and all those superb players on the Seattle Seahawks were key to  the Seahawks winning Super Bowl 48. But Chancellor’s amazing play at safety and blocking field goals using that jumping over the center technique was off the charts football IQ and athletic ability. Zach has that phenomenal football intelligence and super gifted athletic ability as well. He’s amazin. He should be heavily considered for the Butkus award and Bednarik Awards. Zach is a sensational football player, a total game changer on defense. As safety Ryan White said after the game, “I’m glad he’s on our side.”

Our whole defense fought and Coach Ludwig called a super game on offense. Coach Cameron Norcross has done a tremendous job with our offensive line. He’s awesome. Our line is so good. Barrett Gouger, Will Holden, Justin Skule, Bruno Reagan, and Ean Pfeifer are awesome football players.

Kyle Shurmur played a tremendous game. Kyle was pinpoint accurate with his passing. C.J. Duncan was terrific. Jared Pinkney caught a beautiful touchdown and made a super sprint into the end zone for a 7. Caleb Scott made some clutch catches. He played great. Trent Sherfield did some good things. Darrius Sims played well. Ralph and Khari had OK games, maybe not their best, but they ran hard against a good defensive front hard to run, and played their hearts out like the whole team did. They’re both due good games next week against Missouri.

Kyle’s interception was just a quarterback fighting hard to win a football game. That happens sometimes. I remember when I was a 7th grader, I was the quarterback for our team, and we were playing a rival to win our elementary championship. We were deep in our own territory with the ball, and I looked for my cousin, who was a very good wide receiver and whom I had hooked up with for six or seven TDs already that season. I didn’t see a taller linebacker in the area. He stepped in front of the pass and made a pick six. I was pretty devastated after the game. My dad, who didn’t say a lot, but always said something powerful and significant when he spoke, said to me after the loss, “You got a good arm.” It was nice to have a great father. My cousin and one of my other best friends, who played on the team, have always kidded me about saying the guy was “too tall.” It’s something we’ve laughed about through the years.

So it didn’t work out this time. Kyle is still a superb quarterback with a tremendous future in the game. And we’ve got a Missouri game and two more, and most hopefully, three more games. So it’s time to put this behind us and get back to work.

But an awesome effort by our football team. We were better than Auburn yesterday, and I’m personally excited to see what our team can do the rest of this season. We’re @ Missouri next Saturday at 2:30 PM CT/3:30 PM ET on SEC Network. Time to get to work on the Mizzou Tigers this afternoon. Hope you had a great weekend. Have a piece coming up tomorrow on my conversation with our basketball coach, Bryce Drew.

Should be electric in Death Valley on Saturday Night at 7 PM Central. The LSU fans should be good and intoxicated by kickoff, and the atmosphere will be raucous. Can the No. 1 Crimson Tide clear this hurdle?

AU takes on a resurgent Vanderbilt team in Auburn as the Tigers try to keep on grounding out 300 to 400 yard rushing games, make plays in the passing game with the constantly improving Sean White, and have their front four dominate.

Some other key matchups in the SEC and nationally. Here’s a look at this week’s headliners.

Last week: 16-8

Overall: 142-64, 69%

Saturday

No. 1 Alabama (8-0, 5-0 SEC) @ No. 13 LSU (5-2, 3-1)

Tiger Stadium, 102,321

7 PM CT/8 PM ET, CBS

Coach O will have his unit pumped up exponentially and the crowd will be rocking in Death Valley. Leonard Fournette wants to prove he is the big time running back he is portrayed to be, but this time against the best defense in the country that totally shut him down last year in Tuscaloosa.

I like Big game Bama to get the job done and get out of Baaton Rouge, as Howard used to say, with a major SEC and national statement victory and keep matriculating towards the playoffs, yet with another roadblock ahead against the Auburn Tigers.

Crimson Tide 31, LSU 21

Vanderbilt (4-4, 1-3) @ No. 9 Auburn (6-1, 4-1)

11 AM CT/ Noon ET, ESPN

Not picking due to conflict of interest being a VU alum, but here are the keys to victory for both teams.

VU

1.Somehow slow down the awesome Kam Pettway and Kerryon Johnson 1-2 punch. Pettway has been on fire, so that’s a really tall order. When you have a 6’0″, 240 pound Sherman Tank coming at you that’s a heavy load to take on and bring down. The Commodores are going to have to stay in their gaps, contain well on the perimeter and really tackle well. Going low on Pettway and with some real force is the only way to get that hoss down.

2. Run the ball well and the offensive line has to impose its will somewhat on a superb front 4 for the Tigers.

3. VU will have to be better in special teams, need a big play in the kick and punt return game, and the kicker, Tommy Openshaw, needs to convert field goals when he has the opportunity.

4. Believe they can win in a challenging environment to do that.

AU

1. Pretty much the opposite of Vandy. Unleash Kam, Kerryon, and make plays in the play action passing game.

2. The front wall on both sides needs to be dominant.

3. Kicking game needs to be solid as usual. Daniel Carlson is the best kicker in the country.

Should be fun.

No. 11 Florida (6-1, 4-1) @ Arkansas (5-3, 1-3)

2:30 PM CT/3:30 PM ET, CBS

This is going to be another epic in my opinion. Still believe in Brett Bielema and his team. I’m going to go with the upset in Fayetteville on Saturday afternoon.

Hogs 31, Gators 28

No. 4 Texas A&M (7-1, 4-1) @ Mississippi State (3-5, 1-3)

11 AM CT/Noon ET, SEC Network

State is just not having their best year. I see Mullen getting them back next year to being a much better team, though I do think they’ll give A&M some trouble in Davis-Wade Stadium. A&M was a surprise coming in at No.4 in the Playoff rankings, so we’ll see what they’re made of the rest of the way. Home games against Ole Miss and LSU coming up for the Aggies, too. I see them getting through this challenge, but not as easily as expected.

A&M 35, State 28

Missouri (2-6, 0-4) @ South Carolina (4-4, 2-4)

3 PM CT/4 PM ET, SEC Network

Really like the job that Will Muschamp has done in Columbia. Like the Gamecocks to get victory No.5 here.

South Carolina 31, Missouri 17

Georgia (4-4, 2-4) @ Kentucky 5-3, 4-2)

6:30 PM CT/7:30 PM ET, SEC Network

The Wildcats have been the surprise team in the SEC with an outstanding last second victory over State two weeks ago, and a blasting of Missouri last week on the road. But I’m putting my trust in Kirby this week. Still like his great players, Chubb, Michel and Isiah McKenzie. Really like freshman quarterback Jacob Eason already. He’s going to be special in the upcoming years. Kirby and the Dawgs rebound from the Florida loss last week.

Dawgs 35, Wildcats 27

Top 25

Tonight

No. 14 OU 42, Iowa State 35

6:30 PM CT/7:30 PM ET, ESPN

I see the Sooners having a tough time in Ames. Matt Campbell is a fine young football coach and OU’s two running backs, Samaje Perine and Joe Mixon, are both out with injury and suspension respectively. Baker Mayfield does enough to get the job done for the Sooners.

No. 15 Colorado 45, UCLA 28

8 PM CT/9 PM ET, Fox Sports 1

Mike MacIntyre is doing a superb job in Boulder. They have a chance to be in the Pac-12 Championship game representing the South and make the Rose Bowl.

Saturday

No. 6 Washington 38, California 35

9:30 PM CT/10:30 PM ET, ESPN

I really like Chris Peterson and the job he’s doing in Seattle. Washington is a very solid team, but they’ve got a tough road ahead with a tricky one this Saturday in Berkeley, then a tough game at home against a resurgent USC team that has started to live up to its talent and is playing outstanding football. Then the Apple Cup against the Washington State Cougars on the road which will be highly demanding, Friday, Nov. 25th. The Huskies have a lot of work ahead of them if they want to get into the playoffs.

No. 11 Louisville 42, Boston College 17

11 AM CT/ Noon ET, ESPN2

Still believe the Cardinals are a top four team in the country. Their close victories over Duke and Virginia just showed they have mental toughness and both of those teams have excellent coaches and hard working, ambitious players, who will fight you hard. Those are good victories and the demolition of Florida State and the razor thin loss at Clemson convinced me this is a team that is for real. Lamar Jackson sure is.

Northwestern 28, No. 8 Wisconsin 24

11 AM CT/ Noon ET, ABC

Like the Wildcats, a good, underrated football team, to upset the Badgers at home.

No.3 Meechigan 42, Maryland 17

2:30 PM CT/3:30 PM ET, ESPN

Like James and the Wolverines to keep getting it done, this week in the Big House.

No. 2 Clemson 42, Syracuse 21

2:30 PM CT/3:30 PM ET, ABC or ESPN2

Dabo and the Tigers have been getting by this season, barely several times, but they’re getting it done at the end and that’s all that matters. They’re a very good football team.

No. 6 Ohio State 41, Nebraska 28

7 PM CT/8 PM ET, ABC

Like Urb and his troops to snap back this week after a tough loss at Penn State two weeks ago, and a close win over a good Northwestern team, 24-20, at the Horseshoe last week.

No. 18 Oklahoma State 45, Kansas State 42

2:30 PM CT/3:30 PM ET, ABC or ESPN2

Like the Cowboys, after their huge victory over previously unbeaten and top 10 West Virginia, to keep it going in the Little Apple, Manhattan, Kansas.

No.25 Washington State 49, Arizona 31

3 PM CT/4 PM ET, Pac-12 Network

Love the job that Mike Leach does in Pullman. I’m expecting a colossal showdown with Washington @ Washington State on Friday, Nov. 25th @ 2:30 PM CT/3:30 PM ET ON Fox or Fox Sports 1. The Cougars are 5-0 in the Pac-12 and 6-2 overall. They’re a very good team that has found a pretty good defense to go along with a prolific offense.

NFL guys, VU golf team, Luke List, our game with Auburn

Casey (above) and Andre (below) are having stellar seasons for the Chargers and Texans respectively

Casey (above) and Andre (below) are having stellar seasons for the Chargers and Texans respectively

Our NFL players had a superb weekend on Sunday and Monday.

Casey Hayward had a pick six for the San Diego Chargers against the Denver Broncos though the Chargers lost a tough one at Mile High, 27-19, to the Broncos. Casey already has 34 tackles on the season and four ints. He’s come into his own in San Diego. The Chargers fell to 3-5 on the season, and the Broncos moved to 6-2, but I like this Chargers team. They are highly competitive and I expect them to keep playing well this season

Andre Hal had five tackles on Sunday in a Texans’ 20-13 victory over the Lions. The Texans moved to 5-3 on the season. Andre now has 26 tackles on the season and an int. Andre is having a super year at safety for Houston, like Casey is at corner for San Diego.

JMatt had an exceptional game for the Philly Eagles Sunday Night at Dallas catching 11 passes for 65 yards and a seven against the Cowboys in a 29-23 Cowboys’ overtime victory. Dak Prescott has been phenomenal for the Cowboys. Love that for Dak. He’s an awesome young man. JMatt has always been awesome. Jordan has 36 receptions for 419 yards and 3 TDs this season. The Eagles fell to 4-3 on the season, but have a very good team. They’ll be in the mix for the postseason for sure. Love where JMatt is. He, quarterback Carson Wentz and running back Darren Sproles just need some help from the other playmakers on offense. I see that happening. The defense is solid. Believe in JMatt, of course, and his football team.

Jay Cutler gave a passionate pre-game speech to his teammates Monday Night before the Bears game with the Minnesota Vikings then played a superior game against the Vikings as the Bears were victorious, 20-10, Monday Night. Jay had been out for five weeks with a sprained thumb, but really excelled against the No.1 defense in the National Football League. Jay was 20-of-31 for 252 yards with a 7, and the Bears ran it well and played like Urlacher and Lovie Smith defenses used to play. It was amazing how good the defense was. The Bears moved to 2-6 on the season, but even though the record isn’t good, that was a huge victory over the 5-2 Vikings. The Bears still believe they can make the postseason. I want Jay to finish strong this year and keep being a Bear. I love Jay in Chicago. The city fits his personality. Ready to see Jay shine the rest of this season.

Will Gordon and the golf team are exceptional this season and big things are going to happen in the spring for our program under Scott Limbaugh

Will Gordon and the golf team are exceptional this season and big things are going to happen in the spring for our program under Scott Limbaugh

Our men’s golf team is the No.1 team in the country according to Golfstat.com , the premiere college golf ranking sitein my opinion. We’ve got a super team led by sophomores Will Gordon and Patrick Martin and senior Matthias Schwab. Coach Scott Limbaugh has built a powerhouse that has a shot to win it all in the spring. We’ve already won a tournament this fall and lost a tough match play event to defending national champion Oregon at East Lake in Atlanta. But I love where our program is headed under Scott. We’ve already arrived. I watched the matches yesterday. Just need to make a few more putts in the spring and we can win it all. We’ve certainly got the talent.

Luke plays superbly in Jackson, MS on the tour

Luke plays superbly in Jackson, MS on the tour

Luke List finished second at the Sanderson Farms Championship in Jackson, MS. over the weekend. Luke finished in a tie for second with two other players at -16, four shots back of winner Cody Gribble, a 26 year old from the University of Texas, who was lightning clutch on the back side on Sunday. Luke shot 71-66-65-70, and earned $330,000 and moved to No. 15 in the Fed Ex Cup Standings. Super weekend for the 31 year old from Seattle, Washington. Luke has arrived. Luke and Jon Curran are playing in the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open this weekend in Las Vegas. Maybe one of them can win. Like where both of them are and love where Brandt is with his game. Man, he was so good at the Ryder Cup. Expecting a big year from B in 2017. Brandt’s next tournament will be at Sea Island in The RSM Classic, Nov. 17-20th. I see guys like Matthias, Will and Patrick making the tour in the future. Fully expect that from them.

Zach is one superb football player and he's being recognized for it

Zach is one superb football player and he’s being recognized for it

Zach Cunningham was named as a semifinalist for the Butkus Award given to the nation’s best linebacker, and also a semifinalist for the Chuck Bednarik award given to the best defensive player in the country. Zach is one of 12 players selected for the Butkus Award, and one of 18 players selected for the Bednarik Award. Super work by Zach. Couldn’t happen to a better guy. There are some really good linebackers and defensive players nationally, with many in the SEC, but I’d put Zach up there with the best of them. Hoping and praying that Zach has a good shot at one of these awards, but if he doesn’t, it’s still an incredible honor to be selected as a semifinalist to begin with. What a great guy and super player.

Kyle Shurmur and Ralph need to have big games at Auburn Saturday

Kyle Shurmur and Ralph need to have big games at Auburn Saturday

Auburn’s tough, but I expect our guys to play really well Saturday @ Auburn @ 11 AM CT/ Noon ET  on ESPN. The Tigers are a really good football team, but I believe in our guys. We need to make some short, mid range, solid and explosive throws in the passing game, our o line needs to handle their front four, and Ralph, Khari and Josh need to have really good games running the football. Our defense will have to control the Auburn running game with Kam Pettway and Kerryon Johnson. Pettway is a load at 6’2″, 245, and he can run. Johnson went to Madison Academy in Huntsville, AL., like JMatt did, and he’s outstanding. They’ve got a solid quarterback in Sean White and have developed some good playmakers on the perimeter. Their defense is very good.

We’ve got our work cut out for us, but I really like where our football team is at. I really like our players, our head coach, and our assistants. Our goals are still in front of us. We can get to a bowl game for the seniors, win it and finish off a superb year in recruiting. It starts Saturday. Let’s go down to Auburn and shock the country.
