Haitian connection, Braxton Blackwell

Schnider is D’Jery’s twin tower teammate from Haiti, who plays on the same Prestonwood Christian team in Plano, Texas. Schnider is 6’10”, 240 and is a 97, four star for the class of 2016. He has been crystal balled to Kansas by 247 sports, but UConn is heavily in the picture as well. I’m not sure if we can get in the hunt for Schnider, but that would be pretty impressive to have both Haitian natives playing in  the post along with 2015 signee Samir Sehic, our 6’9”, 250 bruising, talented high three-star power forward. And Damian and Luke would be seniors. That would be pretty stellar. I know we’re heavily recruiting five-star power forward Braxton Blackwell (6’’8″, 220, Nashville, C.P.A. School). We’re battling it out with Indiana, Louisville, Ohio State and Tennessee for Braxton’s services. He may be our only guy in 2016. We aren’t on Schnider’s list. His grades are pretty good (3.0 GPA). Will see if anything develops. Excellent story about these two young men who want to improve their families’ lives in Haiti.

We’re @ A&M tomorrow @ 4:30 PM ET/3:30 PM CT on the SEC Network. We’re 11-9 overall and 1-6 in the SEC. Man, could we ever use a victory. Our young players are still fighting hard, just need to get over the top tomorrow and get some momentum heading in the right direction.

D'Jery Baptiste will be a huge addition to our front line

Would be a huge get if we could land five-star power forward Braxton Blackwell

Super Bowl XLIX preview and prediction

Super Bowl XLIX (49)

Seattle Seahawks (14-4)  vs. New England Patriots (14-4)

University of Phoenix Stadium, Phoenix, Arizona (63,400)

Kickooff: 6:30 PM ET/5:30 PM CT

NBC

Al Michaels, Cris Collinsworth, Michelle Tafoya, Bob Costas, Tony Dungy, Rodney Harrison and a cast of others. Katy Perry at halftime (could get interesting). And the highly anticipated commercials.

Coaches:

Seattle: Pete Carroll:  9 years as an NFL head coach, 82-61 (57%), 6-4 playoffs, 1 Super Bowl  victory: 2013 (XLVII).

New England: Bill Belichick: 20 years as head coach (1991-95 with Cleveland Browns; 2000-present Patriots). 211-109 (65%); Postseason: 21-9. Super Bowl wins: 3. 2001 (XXXVI), 2003 (XXXVIII), 2004 (XXXIX).

Lead ref: Bill Vinovich

Inside, retractable roof, no weather problem

Line: New England by 1

Should be an epic. Balls will be checked. No Belicheat in this one. Brady and Gronk will be a handful for the Seattle defense, and the Seahawks offense will have to figure out how to run and throw against a very good defense led by cornerback Darrelle Revis Island and company. But Russell Wilson, Marshawn Lynch, Richard Sherman, Kam Chancellor and Earl Thomas, the superstars for Seattle, will lead the Seahawks to back to back Lombardi Trophies Sunday. Sherman may have a new son that day; his girlfriend is expecting on Sunday or thereabouts. That’s not a sure thing, but it would be an added motivatorfor Sherman to play an all world game, which he is always capable of and usually does.

Two things are sure things: (1)Marshawn Lynch is not going into politics, but he is one heckuva football player. (2) Bill Belichick will never be on the Supreme Court. Last I checked, personal integrity is a requirement for that position and Belichick seems to a little truant in that department. But I take that back. If he retired soon, Obama might nominate him. It would be between Belicheat and Oprah.

Seahawks 31, Patriots 28

Like Richard Sherman (above) and Legion of Boom secondary to get it done barely over Revis Island (below) and a solid NE defense

PGA thoughts and the Waste Management Open prediction

The Waste Management Open at TPC Scottsdale, Arizona just down from where Super Bowl XLIX (49) will be played at the University of Phoenix Stadium, has an elite field entered. Should be an electric weekend in the Phoenix-Scottsdale metro area. The 16th hole has the arena-like stadium atmosphere and features 20,000 or more raucous, super excited fans cheering on every tee shot on the sometimes 162 yard Par 3 (can be anywhere from 115 to 180 depending on the pin location). Excellent course that should yield some good  scores, but a good test of golf too. Kevin Stadler won last year at -16. TPC Scottsdale is 7,216 yards and a Par 71. Exciting field with the return of Eldrick with  new front enamel, Phil, young studs Patrick Reed and Jordan Spieth, and some cagey veterans in Rickie Fowler, Hunter Mahan and many others competing on the greatest show on turf.
My pick this week is Spieth. He won in Australia at the Australian Open in last November and then he won again at the Hero World Challenge in Florida in December. Like where his game’s at. He’s an incredibly accurate d player with both his driver and his irons, he ‘s stellar in the short game, and he’s a phenomenal putter when he’s got the flat stick going. He’s got that mental toughness that Nicklaus, Palmer, Player, Trevino, Faldo, Seve and Eldrick had. Eldrick may get it back, he may not. That’s the Major question right now. This could give us an idea about where his game is heading this season.

But there are other story lines. Will Phil get a major this year? Will Rickie Fowler get over the hump and bag a major after getting four top 10’s in all four majors last year? What about the young up and comers like Spieth, Reed, Russell Henley and other guys? Can they win a consistently and show some dominating ability and capture a major title? Justin Thomas from the University of Alabama  is already making his mark on the tour in his first year after a tie for seventh place last week at the Humana Challenge, a tournament in which he was tied for the lead until a double bogey on the 16th hole. and an excellent Sony tournament in Hawaii the week before where he finished tied for sixth. What about guys like Hunter Mahan, Matt Kuchar and Brandt Snedeker? Are they capable of winning a major? Now’s the time for those guys. Can Duf capture another major?  Certainly has the game. Can Adam Scott add a second major to his resume this season? This tournament has some of the top players in the world. Rory, of course, will be a huge factor when he starts playing in the U.S., particularly in the majors. He’s playing at the Omega Dubai Desert Classic this week in the United Arab Emirates, a big European tour event. He shot -6, 66, in the first round and is tied for sixth, two shots back of leader Bernd Wiesberger of Germany. Can Rory add a fifth major and capture the career grand slam at 25 years old with a win at Augusta, which would be his fifth major?  Rory will turn 26 May 4th and  is making a serious statement in the historically good golfers. Taking home a Green Jacket will only continue that legacy for the premier player in the world right now without a doubt.  If he can win at Augusta, which is as far from a given as any professional player can get with the competition that is  in that spectacular tournament, he sets himself up for opportunities at the U.S. Open at Chambers Bay in Washington state, the Open Championship at St. Andrews, and the PGA at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin, where Dustin Johnson had the unfortunate luck of being penalized for grounding his club in the sand in what didn’t look like much of a sand trap. Johnson didn’t make that playoff in 2010 due to the two shot penalty incurred from the sand and Martin Kaymer took home the Wanamker Trophy with a playoff victory over Bubba. Guys like Bubba and Kaymer will be going for their third majors. Bubba is in the field this week. Bubba is so good at Augusta he has a shot at his third major right there in April. Kaymer can really go off when he’s hot and he’s got the perfect temperament for the game. So under control with his emotions and can really play. And if Eldrick captures a major this season–and he likes Augusta of course where he’s won four times (1997,2001, 2002 and 2005), and St. Andrews where he won in 2000 and 2005, it will get interesting again with his pursuit of Jack’s record 18 major titles. Tiger would be at 15 if he gets one this year, and with those two courses he might get 15 and 16. But you wonder where his game is right now. And the competition is stiffer than it ever has been for him, so he has work cut out for him as far as winning any major or winning period, particularly with all the injuries to his back and his knee that flared up all of last year and seem to be a problem for him.

But I like Spieth this week and I like Spieth to win a major this year. I might pick him at Augusta, but I will definitely have him winning one major this season. He’s so talented and he’s’s focused. Famous author, sportswriter and golf commentator John Feinstein said there are golfers today who are content making a good living playing golf and enjoying their families, which is perfectly fine, but there are some is an elite group that has another gear and wants to make history by winning major championships. I put Spieth and Patrick Reed in that group. I’m starting to see Russell Henley as a guy who might be in that group. Billy Horschel is a guy who could do it. You’ve got to put Tiger up there because all he cares about now is winning majors. Maybe an Arnie or a Memorial (Jack’s tourney) but he’s totally focused on majors. Phil still wants to win majors and there are some others who could emerge this year, both younger and more veteran guys. It’s a select brethren of players. I see Spieth as part of that coterie, a guy who wants to make history. And I like him to get there. I like him to get it done in this tournament on Super Bowl Sunday. Will have Super Bowl XLIX preview tomorrow.

Waste Management TV times:

Today and Friday: 3-7 PM ET/2-6 PM CT Golf Channel. Saturday and Sunday: 1-2:30 PM ET/12-1:30 PM CT on Golf. 3-6 PM ET/ 2-5 PM CT on CBS.

Jordan captures his first title of this calendar year on the way to a banner 2015

Three guys who will play central roles in VU baseball’s attempt at a repeat

Carson Fulmer could very well be our Friday night starter

Hayden Stone will be bring us stellar pitching out of the bullpen and possibly our closer

Dansby Swanson may be the heart and soul of this potentially special baseball team

The goals in Vanderbilt baseball are all about winning championships. Coach Tim Corbin breaks it down a lot more incrementally. He wants to win the day. That’s what this baseball team has done in 12 years under Corbs, and that’s what they plan to do again in 2015. We want to be playing in late June in Omaha without a doubt. But in order to do that, we need to get better every practice, every game, every series. It all starts Friday, February 13th, with a weekend series against Santa Clara at the Hawk. But actually, practice is at full tilt right now, so Corbs and the guys are now heavily honing their skills for the season opener. The SEC is very good with eight teams in  D1Baseball.com’s top 25. LSU is very good, Florida is excellent, South Carolina, Arkansas, Tennessee, Ole Miss, A&M, Alabama and UT, the whole conference is talented across the board. To navigate our way through the pre-conference schedule, which includes playing top 10 teams UCLA and TCU in LA among other games, and then matriculate successfully thought the conference schedule in pursuit of conference and tournament titles, we will need all hands on deck. We’ve got excellent experience back in our pitching staff, on defense and at the plate. Three of the guys who will be instrumental in this team achieving its goals are Carson Fulmer, Hayden Stone and Dansby Swanson, three integral members of last year’s national championship team. Dansby was the college World Series MVP and Carson and Hayden played a huge role in the championship victory over UVA and throughout the season. I had a chance to speak with all three on the phone last Wednesday and got their thoughts on the upcoming season. All three are energized and focused on bringing more championships back to Nashville.

Hayden Stone said the world series was not as much a physical challenge as it was a mental grind.

“It was an awesome experience,” Hayden said. “It was really emotionally draining. It was a lot more of a mental drain than a physical drain. By the time it was over it was a relief. We were glad we brought the trophy back to Nashville.”

Hayden, with his methodical delivery and incredible stuff, could be Corbs’ closer this season, taking the place of the awesome Adam Ravanelle, who closed out the championship game with a strikeout of a Virginia hitter. Adam was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the fourth round. The Tigers have become Vanderbilt north with the great David Price and several others former VU baseball players members of their organization.

“I hope I can close, but I also like to come in early,” Stone said. “Whenever I need to go in is fine with me.” Hayden says that redshirt freshman Jordan Sheffield will be a key part of the bullpen along with stud lefty Ben Bowden. Hayden says those guys and some others out of the pen have “electric arms.” You always need a stellar bullpen to win championships. Our bullpen, stellar defense and timely hitting won us the national championship last season.

Carson Fulmer says he is clocking mid-90’s and sometimes hits the high 90’s with his heater. “My breaking ball is my out pitch and I’ve developed my change up pretty well too.” Carson saId. He and teammates Walker Buehler, Swanson and Bryan Reynolds spent last summer playing ball in North Carolina, the Neatherlands for a week, then Cuba for 10 days. “We played against some guys in their late 20’s. It was an incredible experience.” Walker will be another key starter on this baseball team. Either Carson or Walker will be our Friday night starter with the other one taking the mound on Saturdays. Walker brings it in the mid 90’s as well and can hit high 90’s some too, and he has excellent stuff with a breaking ball and slider along with a change-up. Reynolds is another key cog in this baseball team. As a freshman, Bryan hit .338 with four homers and 54 ribeyes. In hitting .338, he also racked up 24 doubles. Dansby led the team with 27 doubles. We hit 145 doubles last year, a top five number in the country. Reynolds also made some huge defensive plays in left field in the World Series. This year should be even better for Bryan with more power numbers and even better defensive play. He’s another guy who the sky is the limit for.

Carson likes what he sees from returning catchers Karl Ellison and Jason Delay. “They’ve very good and we’ve developed a very good relationship. Their bats are becoming very good too.”

Dansby will move over to shortstop this season, which was his natural position coming out of high school. He played second last year as Vinnie Conde, who is now in the Yankees organization, played a stellar short and he, Dansby and center fielder John Norwood formed an exceptional group up the middle for the Dores baseball team. You’d have to include catchers Delay and Ellison in that group up the middle as well. Norwood hit the epic home run in the bottom of the eight inning off a 97 MPH fastball that will go down as one of the greatest plays all time in VU sports history. John is now with the Miami Marlins, so Dansby will move to short, Tyler Campbell will move to second, Nolan Rogers will play left field and freshman Will Toffey will move over to third. Xavier Turner will not be on the team this season. He had some discipline issues during the world series last year and he is trying to get his act together.

“Tyler is really good up the middle, he’s phenomenal,” Dansby said of Campbell at second. “Hopefully we’ll have good chemistry together like Vinnie and i had. I don’t think that will be a problem for us. Tyler has good speed and power. The whole team will have a lot of speed and power.”

Rogers will man center field and he will be flanked by Reynolds in left and the awesome Rhett Wiseman in right. Both Campbell and Wiseman played key roles for us in winning the national championship last year. Campbell played a stellar third and Wiseman made play after play in right and had an excellent bat throughout the series as did Campbell. Wiseman made the first out of the ninth inning against UVA on a tough over the shoulder catch, a hugely clutch play in the game that helped us win it all.

“We have good speed and we should steal a lot of bases and put pressure on the other teams,” Dansby said. “Nolan will give us good speed in the outfield and a good bat. We have good power with Zander Wiel (at first base), who should break out this season. Wiseman and Reynolds have good power too. Kyle Smith has great raw power and he should hit like he did two years ago (as a freshman). He just needs to play under control at the plate. He’s got excellent power.”  Kyle could be our DH this season.

“Will is going to be a phenomenal third baseman,” Dansby added of freshman third baseman Will Toffey. “He’s gritty, tough and really competitive. He has a hockey background and he brings that toughness to baseball.”  Will is a former hockey player in high school and is 6’2″, 195. “Nolan will make a huge impact with his speed and his defense (in center). He’s a tough competitor also.”

Dansby will be our leadoff hitter and will set the table for guys like Reynolds, Wiel, Wiseman and Toffey. Nolan Rogers could hit second for us and that will bring us some awesome speed at the top of the lineup.

Should be an exciting, and hopefully electric season. Look for John Kilichowski to play a role in the starting rotation. The lefty has another powerful arm. He and Tyler Ferguson are  guys who could be weekend/Sunday starters. Kilichowski can bring it and has excellent stuff. Tyler has a powerful arm and just needs to get his control down.

The team is locked and loaded and ready to compete for an SEC and a national championship. It’s already started with practice running at full bore. Incredible group with talent, experience and, most importantly, high character. These three guys will play a major role in this team’s quest for another run at Omaha and a shot at another national championship.

This week’s winner at Humana Challenge

Sponsored by William Jefferson Clinton Foundation.

Gary Woodland

Woodland finished third last week at the Sony Open in Honolulu and shot 70-65-65-67, 13 under par. Jimmy Walker ran away from the field winning at -23, nine shots clear of second place finisher Scott Piercy. But Walker is not in the field this week, so I like a guy who can hit it a ton, is accurate with his driver and his irons, and is a very good putter. Woodland finished T-38 here last year, but shot 65-68 on the final two days. He lost in playoff to Jhonattan Vegas here in the Bob Hope Classic  in 2011 and won the Transitions Championship in 2011 and the Reno-Tahoe Open in 2013. He’s trending well. So I like the 30-year old Midwesterner from Topeka, Kansas to take home the Humana title this year.

Tiger out of action with a missing front tooth. Wasn’t going to play this week any way. Expected to play in the Waste Management Phoenix Open in Scottsdale, Az next week. Same city as the Super Bowl that will be played on that Sunday, Feb. 1. The final round will finish just before the game kicks off. Should be a classic with the Seahawks vs Deflate-Gate.

If it’s not one thing it’s another in the soap opera titled Eldrick Woods. Honestly, I think he got in on the short end of a fight, or Elin hit him with a broom handle.

Woodland is the pick this week.

Golf Channel will provide coverage, from 3-7 PM ET/ 2-6 PM CT all four days. Weather looks sunny, mid 70’s today and tomorrow, high 70’s Saturday and Sunday. Wind not a factor except for Saturday when it’s out of the Northwest at 12 MPH. There’s a lot of water on the course and beautiful mountain scenery. No.9 is the hardest hole on the course–the Palmer Private Course, which the players will play Sunday. They’ll also play Nicklaus Private and La Quinta CC first three days with a cut after Day 3. Nine is a 461 yard, par four which requires extreme accuracy off the tee. There are bunkers on the right and water guarding the left side. The best drive is right-central which gives the player the best shot at a long iron to a large, rolling green. Par is a very good score on nine. No. 18 is a par 5 543 yards. It’s a gamble for a go-for. There is sand and water that come into play when you go for it and the green is challenging for putting. David Duval went for it from 215 yards and sank his eagle putt here for a 59 back in 1999.

Big hitter Gary Woodland is my pick this week at Bill's tourney

******Looks like Woodland dropped out. One of my friends who reads the blog picked Patrick Reed and Dufner as a dark horse, so I’ll go with him. Reed a good pick. ****

Heckuva’n effort last night despite the result, football commitment, baseball note

I thought the guys really fought hard, played their hearts out though they fell to that team from North of Nashville, 65-57. But Riley LaChance (16 points, 3-of-4 from trifecta), MFD (13 points, 4-of-7 from 3) and Damian (11 points, seven boards) played very well. Riley may have been a three-star rated player but he has a 1,000 star heart and looked to me at times during the game last night like the best player on the floor. Wade and Shelton ran the point pretty well for the most part, Luke needs to get more physical but can still help us with his length, his offensive skills and hopefully rebounding, James played fine, but Josh Henderson played a heckuva game and really gave us a spark. I’d like to see Josh play a lot more as the season progresses. He’s a very good offensive player and he’ll mix it up in the middle. Thought he was excellent. Kevin said it’s harder for Josh to play with Damian at the same time because Damian doesn’t know the plays at the four spot. Either Damian needs to learn them or put James in there with Josh and let them cover the interior. I like either one of those combinations. Jeff Roberson needs to keep improving and he will with more game experience. Jeff’s a talented player, who looks like he’ll mix it up once he gets that confidence that he can play with these high level players. He’s close.
We’re not happy at all with the result, but I know I’m very proud of the effort. We’re now 11-7 overall and 1-4 in conference. Huge game against LSU Saturday at Memorial @ 6 PM ET/5PM CT on “Duh U” (ESPNU). LSU is a very good team with a 14-4 overall record and a 3-2 record in the SEC. They have road wins over Ole Miss and Florida last night, 79-61. That’s impressive. They have an excellent inside game and some pretty good shooters from the outside. Inside guys Jordan Mickey and Tim Quarterman are outstanding athletes and finishers and they have a very good shooter-playmaker in Keith Hornsby, a guard, who was three-for-six last night from triple and can score from anywhere and just makes his team better when he’s out there. We’ll have to really bring our lunch pales and our  hard hats for this one. We really need this one. The tournament is still in the picture, but we need to turn this thing around immediately. It starts Saturday afternoon. Memorial should  be rocking. The team needs the students’ and the fans’ support. Our young guys are fighting, not as much against State last Saturday–not sure what was wrong that day–but we really battled that team from Memorial North last night. Kevin is not into the “moral victories,” but he liked what he saw as far as effort was concerned.

Jared Pinkney, a solid three-star wide receiver from Norcross, Georgia, has joined the Commodore football family. Jared is 6’5″, 225. Like that size. Jared picked us over Florida. He will visit Florida this weekend, which makes me a little concerned, but he says he’s solid with VU. Jared is an 85 three-star by 247 sports, and a 5.6 three-star by Rivals. He is the only receiver we have committed now. We have quite a few guys already on the team, so we’ll see what Derek does going forward concerning receiver. I know solid three-star Gary Jennings is still a target, so will keep an eye on that. Four-star linebacker Josh Smith had an excellent visit to VU over last weekend, and looks pretty solid to us. Oklahoma, Oregon and Georgia are making a push for Josh. He is now rated as a 95 four-star by 247, close to a five-star and is a 5.9 four-star by Rivals. With his brother, redshirt safety Emmanuel Smith, who is an excellent player in his own right and was a four-star last year, on the team, I feel like we will get Josh. Jared is our 17th commit in the class, and I’m expecting high three-star running back Bradrick Shaw (Hoover, Alabama) to come our way very soon. Kyle Shurmur, our quarterback commit from Pennsylvania, is now rated a four-star by Rivals and is an 88 by 247.  Exciting players times in football. The recruits are really excited about our re-configured coaching staff that Derek has put together this offseason. Just gotta keep ’em coming. Will keep you posted on any developments as soon as they transpire.

Our baseball team is the preseason No.1 team in the country in the Perfect Game and D1 baseball.com polls. We have the makings of an outstanding team, but Corbs would be the first to tell you preseason doesn’t mean a thing. We have to prove it on the field starting in February and really starting this month when practice begins. Love the group we have in place though. Good veterans and good young players. I will be talking with Carson Fulmer, Dansby Swanson and Hayden Stone today on the phone. Will have that report tomorrow or Friday. Collegiate Baseball will be putting out their poll soon as will Baseball America. D1baseball.com has become a highly reputable college baseball website as they have recently hired two of the best college baseball writers in the country, Aaron Fitt who came over to D1 from Baseball America, and Kendall Rogers, who came over to D1 from Perfect Game. So their opinions really matter. They have us No. 1, Florida N0.2, UVA No.3, South Carolina No.5, LSU No.9, A&M No.17, Ole Miss No.18, Alabama No.20 and Tennessee No. 25. Wow, the league is loaded once again. We’ll be on TV 12 times this year. We play @ Auburn, Saturday, March 21, @ 8 PM ET/7 PM CT on the SEC Network. We play vs. Tennessee, March 28-29 (Saturday and Sunday),  on the SEC Network. Saturday’s game is at 4 PM CT, and Sunday’s game is at 2:30 PM CT. We’re @ Georgia, Sunday, April 5th, @Noon ET/11 AM CT on the SEC Network. We’re vs. Ole Miss, thursday, April 9th @ 6:30 PM CT on ESPNU, and we’re vs Ole Miss on Saturday, April 11th @ 2 PM CT on the SEC Network. We’re @ South Carolina April 16th-18th (Thurday-Saturday, all three games of the series) with Thursday, April 16th on ESPNU @ 7:30 PM ET/6:30 PM CT, Friday, April 17th @ 7:30 PM ET/6:30 PM CT on the SEC Network and Saturday, April 18th @ Noon ET/11 AM CT on the Deuce (ESPN2). We play Florida at home on Thursday, May 7th @ 6 PM CT on ESPNU, and Florida @ home on Saturday,May 9th @ Noon CT on the SEC Network. And we finish off the regular season TV schedule @ Alabama on Saturday, May 16th @ 3:30 PM CT on the SEC Network. Our Alabama game will be played at the Hoover Met Stadium in Birmingham as Alabama is renovating their stadium in Tuscaloosa. We also play No.4 UCLA on March 6th in Los Angeles, then @ USC March 7th in Los Angeles, then we play No.8 TCU on March 8th. The TCU game is at Dodger Stadium. We open with Santa Clara February 13th-15th (Friday-Sunday)  at home. First pitch Friday, Feb.15th, is at 4 PM CT at the Hawk. Should be fun.

I’m encouraged by the way our team played and battled last night. Hopefully, we will really build on last night’s  game and carry that momentum into Saturday afternoon against LSU.

Josh Henderson gave maximum effort last night as did the rest of the team

Recruiting, bball

We got a commit out of solid three star offensive tackle Jared Southers. Jared is from West Orange, New Jersey and is 6’4”, 290. We now have three offensive linemen in the class with another tackle (Darion DeBrossard (6’4”, 323 solid three, Snellville, Georgia) and an offensive guard, Justin Skule (6’6” ,305, Clifton, Virginia) We are in good shape for two running backs, high three-star Bradrick Shaw out of Hoover, Al, who visited over the weekend. Bradrcik had an excellent visit and we have a very good shot with him. He’s 6’1”, 205.The other RB is Marcus Marshall out of Georgia, a solid three-star out of Raleigh, NC had an in-home visit from Coach Ludwig and Coach Bankins and was highly impressed with our two coaches. He is the brother of Georgia running back Keith Marshall, who was a five-star out of high school but has battled injuries. We are battling it out with Georgia Tech and Wake Forest for Marshall. Also, Logan Hunt, a three star d end from Georgia is in the mix. As is Jared Pinkney, a 6’5”, 225 solid three-star wide out from Norcross, Georiga. We are battling it out with Florida and Central Florida for Jared. He’s visiting Florida this weekend and will decide probably next Monday. He had an awesome visit. Also, four-star rb Ke’Shawn Vaughn is still in play, but he didn’t visit over the weakend. He’s apparently coming today, but the coaches will be on the road recruiting, so not sure if this will materialize into a commit. He’s kind of been making a soap opera out of this, but we would surely take him if he gets his act together. There are some others, but those are the main names I’m hearing right now. Also, four-star linebacker commit Josh Smith had an excellent visit. Josh is now being pursued by Oklahoma and Oregon and could very well take visits there, but his brother Emmanuel is a four-star rising redshirt freshman safety on the team and Josh stayed with him last night after his official visit. Really need to hang on to Josh. He is a 92 four-star by 247 sports and a consensus 95 four-star, which puts him pretty  close to five-star status. Need to keep Josh, four-star corner Donovan Sheffield and the entire commitment class. But all were in town for the weekend and it was apparently a blast.

Saturday would be almost considered a disaster for the team. Damian played a good game with 21 points and seven or eight boards, but he was 3-of-11 from the line which really hurt us. We lost 60-57 to State. Our outside shooting was non-existent for the most part in the second half too. Damian and Riley need some help with the scoring load and Damian needs to get better at the line, take care of the ball better, pass better and get more physical underneath. He’s a good player, but there are parts of his game that need to improve. Luke is just not physical enough right now, and James didn’t have a very good game on Saturday either. Maybe the both step up going forward and Damian can clean up his game some and Josh Henderson can help us some. Josh is a good offensive player, but just needs to be more physical underneath. Really need Jeff Roberson to step up as well in the rebounding department and the scoring. He’s got great potential, but it needs to be realized ASAP. Shelton and Wade did some pretty good things on Saturday, particularly Wade, but both need to continue to get better and give us some more leadership in passing, scoring and defending. MFD was off with his shot on Saturday, but he should get it back. Riley didn’t have his best game, but he always fights. Kentucky tomorrow night (Tuesday) @ 9 PM ET/8 PM CT on the SEC Network. Have our work cut out for us, but we’re going in there to win.

Looking good on keeping four-star linebacker Josh Smith (above) in the fold as a signee Feb. 4th

Damian Jones is a good player, but he needs to keep improving for this team to have success this season and he needs more help

Derek hiring wide receivers coach, recruiting, bball, Bears

New wide receivers coach Cortez Hankton
Derek is set to hire Dartmouth wide receivers coach Cortez Hankton as our new wide receivers coach. Cortez has done well at Dartmouth helping lead the team to an 8-2 season this year and 6-4 years the two years prior. Cortez played in the NFL for six seasons, four with the Jacksonville Jaguars and the other two with the Tampa Bay Bucs and the Vikings.  He had an excellent college career at Texas Southern. Cortez has a reputation as a top flight recruiter. His recruiting areas included Arkansas, Louisiana, Hawaii, Oklahoma and Texas. A lot of stellar football players in those states. Like this hire. Will have more when it comes down, but looks like we’ve rounded out our staff for 2015-16. Like where we’re headed.

Huge recruiting weekend with all commits and key targets in town. Four-star cornerback Donovan Sheffield and four-star linebacker Josh Smith will head up the group of all 15 commitments in town along with high three-star signal caller Kyle Shurmur and high three-star defensive end Caleb Peart. I’m expecting Hoover, Al. running back Bradrick Shaw to be coming our way this weekend. Would be an excellent pickup. Very good size (6’1”, 2o5) and excellent quickness and speed. Solid three-star wide receiver Jared Pinkney (6’5″, 223, Norcross, Ga.) and solid three star defensive end Dylan Jackson (6’6″, 245, Maryville, Tn) will also be visiting. Could have three pops there.  There should be a couple of others. Exciting stuff going on.

Bball lost a tough one Wednesday to a good Georgia team, 70-67. We’re now 11-5 overall and 1-2 in conference. Proud of the way the kids fought back. Riley LaChance was trying to will us to victory with three triples late. Need Damian and Luke to play better underneath and Wade and Shelton to run the point even better. MFD shooting it well. Jeff Roberson getting better and better. Like all the young guy’s upside. They’re talented. James has been a little banged up, so we’ll be better when he returns to full strength. Got Ms. State @ State tomorrow @ 4 PM ET/3 PM CT on Fox Sports Network. State is 7-9 overall and 0-3 in the SEC, but we need to play well. They’ll be tough at home. We need to get our momentum back.
The Bears are set to hire John Fox as their head coach. Like Fox a lot. He should be good for Jay. Good man and an excellent football coach. He’s taken the Carolina Panthers and the Denver Broncos to the Super Bowl and he’s an outstanding defensive coach, which the Bears need to get back to. They need to start playing Chicago Bears football again and with Jay and the skilled players in place and a very good o line, we can get back to the playoffs next year and make a run at the big game. Fox should hire an excellent offensive coordinator who will jell very well with Jay. Will have more on that later on this weekend as well.
Will be talking to Carson Fulmer, Hayden Stone and Dansby Swanson hopefully next Wednesday and will have a piece up Thursday or Friday with our stud baseball players. Our team has been picked by Baseball America as the preseason number one team in the country. A lot of great players back, great arms, bats, good speed, gloves and an incredible group of kids. Psyched to see Corbs and the boys do work.
Jon Curran playing in the Sony Open in Honolulu on the PGA tour this weekend. Jon at -1 and will tee off at 5:10 PM ET/4:10 PM CT. If he plays well he’ll probably get some coverage on the Golf Channel which starts its broadcast at 7 PM ET/6 PM CT. Brandt not in the field, but I’m expecting him to be playing next week at the Humana Challenge on the PGA West Course in La Quinta, Cali. It’s the William Jefferson Clinton Tournament. Will have the list of players at 5 PM ET/ 4 PM CT.
Great stuff going on at VU. Will keep you posted on all developments. Thanks.

NFL Predictions- AFC and NFC Championship games on Sunday

These match ups are pretty stellar. Next stop Super Bowl 49 at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona on Sunday, February 1st at 6:30 PM ET/5:30 PM CT on NBC.

Green Bay Packers (12-4, 4-4 on road) @ Seattle Seahawks (12-4, 7-1 @ home)

Weather: Showers 60%

Line: Seahawks by 7 1/2

I love this Packers team. ARodg, Jordy Nelson, Randall Cobb and Eddie Lacy are dynamite players. But this is a tall order for any team with this explosive 12th man crowd in Seattle that gives the Seahawks at least a field goal advantage going in. Can the Packers win at Seattle? They could, but with this stifling, lock down defense that the Seahawks employ and the way Russell Wilson just finds a way to make explosive plays and get his team in the end zone enough, I like the Seahawks to return to the Super Bowl. Their secondary with the awesome Richard Sherman and Kam Chancellor are the ultimate game changers. Seahawks advance, but in a good game.

Indianapolis Colts (11-5, 5-3) @ New England Patriots (12-4, 7-1

This rain could favor the Colts if it actually transpires. Never know with the 10 day. But this Colts defense can keep it close and Andrew Luck can certainly make plays with receiver T.Y. Hilton and tight end Coby Fleener among others. But Brady looks like he’s on a mission. Ray Lewis’s comment that Brady would never have achieved greatness if it wasn’t for the tuck rule in 2001 when Brady was sacked by the Raiders late in the AFC conference game at snow filled New England and the refs called it an incomplete pass rather than a fumble that would have sealed the game for the Raiders and they would have reached the Super Bowl and not Brady and the Patriots, is a crock. That wasn’t a good rule then and the Raiders got robbed–the rule was rescinded in 2012– but Brady would has achieved greatness regardless of that play. I may have picked the Ravens last week because I thought they could knock off the Patriots, they had a very good team,  but I won’t ever deny Tom Brady’s greatness. He’s a proven all time elite quarterback. Three Super Bowl victories and two more appearances proves his greatness. So while I think the Colts can make this a good game, I like the Patriots to move on to Glendale and face the Seahawks in Super Bowl XLIX . Should be a good game though, particularly if the weather conditions are questionable.

Patriots 27, Colts 24

Tom Brady (above) and Russell Wilson (below) will lead their teams to Super Bowl XLIX but in hard fought games

Cardale Jones; SEC basketball, nationally, NBA

Cardale Jones makes excellent decision
Cardale Jones will be making his decision whether to go out for the draft and turn pro or come back to Ohio State. *****Breaking: Cardale Jones is coming back to Ohio State per a report in Yahoo Sports. If he sticks to this decision, I think that is a really good move on his part. With another year now, he could be something special both next year and in his pro career. Urban Meyer hired the offensive coordinator from Nebraska, Tim Beck, to take Tom Herman’s place. Herman took the head job at Houston. Beck had great offenses at Nebraska, so this is an excellent decision by Cardele. I’m pretty proud of him.I’m a little surprised he’d contemplated whether to go to the NFL. He had three good games, but three good games don’t make you a quality starter in the NFL. Look at guys who stayed all four years: E.J. Manuel was stellar for the most part at Florida State and he has really struggled in the pros. Same for Geno Smith at West Virginia and now the New York Jets. Both were benched this season. The NFL is a whole new level from college. The guys are stronger, faster and smarter on defense. The defensive coaching, in many ways, is more advanced. That’s all these guys do for a living is concentrate on football, both players and coaches. You have to be pretty smart to play quarterback in the NFL along with having the physical tools. I think Jones getting another year of seasoning in college will really get him ready for the league. A lot of these guys are tired of studying in college, which they shouldn’t be because they need to get an education because football doesn’t always work out–a lot of times it doesn’t, less than 1% of college football players who try out for the NFL make it. They obviously want to make a good living and that’s cool. Totally on board with that. I’m just not sure that three really good games, and they were outstanding, makes you a quality NFL starter. So Cardele made a very mature decision for himself by staying another year at Ohio State. He still has to beat out Braxton Miller and J.T. Barrett to be the starter next year, but he’s certainly got the leg up after these performances. He will be the number one heading into the spring.

SEC basketball is probably as good as it’s been in a while. Kentucky is good. Are they great? Not yet. They are tough inside with their 6’11”, 7 footers, but they’re not a real good shooting team. Aaron Harrison can get hot from three, but the rest of them really aren’t good outside shooters. People are already talking about them running the table. That’s premature. They’ve got a good team, but not great yet. Florida was struggling, but they’re starting to get it tougher. They had some injuries, but they seem to be starting to jell, so they’ll be a factor in the conference. Donovan will have them playing good ball sooner rather than later. Arkansas, though they lost at Tennessee Tuesday night, is a quality team. They have really struggled on the road under Mike Anderson, but won at Georgia to open the season and came back from double digits to almost knock off Tennessee. They lost by two or three. They are terrific at Bud Walton Arena, their home court. LSU is good, Ole Miss is good, Georgia is pretty good. Alabama is better. Not sure they’re great. They have to host Kentucky on Saturday (4 PM ET/3 CT on ESPN), so that will tell us where Anthony Grant’ program is. They’re better that’s for sure. Auburn is in a developmental season. Pearly has brought in some good players, and is recruiting well. They might be another year or two away from being pretty competitive. South Carolina has a pretty good team. Frank Martin is like a football coach the way he coaches them up. Vanderbilt is the 323rd youngest team in the country out of 328. They’ve got good talent, but they are developing as well.

So it should be an excellent conference season. Nationally, it’s wide open. Duke has lost two in a row, Virginia looks outstanding, they play lock down defense and enough offense to make a run to the Final Four. I like Villanova. Arizona is good out west as is Utah and San Diego State. Gonzaga is outstanding. There are plenty of other teams like Miami, which knocked off Duke  last night, Michigan State, always solid and right there in March under Tom Izzo, Ohio State, Wisconsin, Louisville, which will always be there under Pitino, Duke, of course. North Carolina looks stellar now with a home victory over Louisville in the closing seconds and a huge victory @ NC State last night, Kansas will be there, Wichita State is very good, and I really like West Virginia’s team. Bob “Huggy Bear” Huggins has his best team in Morgantown. Indiana will be there in March. They will keep improving under Tom Crean as the season progresses and should be formidable in February and March. Crean is Jim and John Harbaugh’s brother in law and has that kind of intensity.

So there’s no guarantee Kentucky will win the national championship. There are a lot of very good teams, and on any given night, the Wildcats can be shooting poorly and a conference team can beat them. And the NCAA tournament is a one shot deal, so anything can happen with the quality teams in that field.

It’s going to be an outstanding season with some epic games. And the tournament should be phenomenal.

NBA right now the Golden State Warriors have the best record in the Western Conference and the Atlanta Hawks in the East. The West is just loaded with Golden State, San Antonio (always a factor with the Big Fundamental, Tim Duncan, and company) the Dallas Mavericks, Houston Rockets, LA Clippers, Portland Trailblazers and Memphis Grizzlies all competing for the top spot in the west and the coveted home court advantage throughout the playoffs. Of course my Oklahoma City Thunder should be there at the end. KD will get them there, and they have a lot of talent around him. He’s the ultimate basketball player. In the East the Hawks look for real as do the young, super talented Washington Wizards, the young talented Toronto Raptors and the Chicago Bulls which have  a pretty star-studded lineup. The question in the NBA is will the Cleveland Cavaliers and LeBron James wake up? They are 19-20 and 12 games behind the conference leading Hawks.  They better get going in a hurry or Cleveland is going to be pretty irate that King James couldn’t do better than this.

When is LeBron going to wake up?
