Thursday Night’s games, some other brief thoughts

Connor Shaw could be seeing the athletic trainer some this season
South Carolina looked good in its dismantling of North Carolina on Thursday Night. South Carolina won the game, 27-10. Couple of thoughts on it: Connor Shaw is a good player, but at some point he’s going to get hurt. He plays recklessly at times and he’s going to get pounded by somebody and hurt a shoulder or something else. But I do like the guy behind him, Dylan Thompson. Looks like Spurrier is going with Shaw for the most part, or he did in the first game. You never know with Spurrier, he could pull him if he doesn’t get it going against Georgia. I thought that hurt Spurrier at times when he was at Florida and was constantly switching quarterbacks. The only year he won it all was when he stuck with Danny Wuerffel at quarterback at Florida (1995). But he looks like he’s going with Shaw for the most part, at least until he gets hurt. Thompson is a better passer, but Shaw is the better runner. South Carolina does have a couple of excellent running backs in Mike Davis and Brandon Wilds, so they don’t need Shaw to run as much.

It comes to my point about this read option attack that a lot of offenses are employing which has become popular in the NFL. Guys like Robert Griffin, Colin Kaepernick of the 49ers, Cam and Russell Wilson of the Seahawks are running it. At some point, those guys are going to get hurt. That’s the belief of coaches like Sean Payton of the Saints and Tom Coughlin of the Giants, and I agree with them. Cam may be the one who can get away with it because of his size and durability. Kaepernick’s bigger, but he could be prone to injury. Wilson seems to be elusive and can get away from people. I think RG IIi is going to get hurt. He just plays so recklessly that somebody is going to level him and hurt him like what happened last year.

It’s the same type offensive style that Shaw employs with the run being a big part of his game. He’s not big. He’s tough but not big. So Spurrier is fortunate he has a capable backup in Thompson. He’s probably going to need him.

As for Jadeveon Clowney and what some people felt was his lack of conditioning Thursday Night when he was dragging during the game, Clowney had a stomach virus the night before, he was playing in 95 degree heat,  he just wore him out. I think Clowney is going to be fine. Some have said he takes plays off. I don’t think so. I’ve never seen that. Clowney will be have an excellent year once again.

The Ole Miss-Vandy game was a classic with the Rebels prevailing, 39-35, in an excellent college football game. I think there is some blame for the Vanderbilt coaching staff  for the loss. Their defensive coordinator, Bob Shoop, had no answers for Rebel quarterback Bo Wallace and his read zone option. Wallace is like Cam in that he can run and get away with it. The guy is 6’4″, 220. He’s listed at 209, but he’s a good 10 pounds heavier  that that. He can take the licks, though there is no guarantee he won’t get hurt either. But Vanderbilt never adjusted to the quick out passes to the wide outs of Ole Miss or Wallace’s read option run plays or handoffs up the middle. There were no linebackers to be found keying on Wallace. No adjustments were made during the game by the Vanderbilt defense to stop Wallace. The Ole Miss coaches just outcoached Shoop and the defensive coaches for Vanderbilt. I lay a little bit of blame on James Franklin as well. His over the top reaction to his tight end, Steven Scheu, catching the go-ahead touchdown pass with 1:30 left to put Vanderbilt ahead 35-32 lead gave his team a false sense of overconfidence and led them to believe they already had the game won. The defense seemed to let their guard down allowing Ole Miss running back Jeff Scott to take off on his 75 yard game winning touchdown with 1:07 left in the game. Excellent game though. Two very solid SEC teams. Think Vandy can win seven and Ole Miss could win nine, maybe even more if things go their way.

And how about the Bison from North Dakota State knocking off last year’s Big 12 champion and Fiesta Bowl participant (albeit loser) Kansas State. K-State is a little down this year after losing a lot of players off last year’s team, but it had more to do with the Bison than it did with the Wildcats. The Bison won the FCS national championship last year (formerly Division 1 AA), and returned a ton of players from that team. It was an amazing performance and exciting football game. Really awesome. I’m not so sure that the Bison couldn’t do that to some other big names in college football. They’re for real. I changed my pick yesterday from Oklahoma State to Mississippi State before that North Dakota upset. I watched some more film on State and liked what I saw. Feeling better about that pick after K-State went down last night.

Finally, A. J. McCarron was wearing a protective boot yesterday for what was reported by ESPN to be an ingrown toenail. Seems a little strange that a player would be walking in a boot for a toenail issue, but whatever. Update: Looks like McCarron had a toenail removed for an infection Thursday Night according to Kirk Herbstreit. Had a slight surgical procedure. The walking boot makes a lot more sense. Without A.J. all bets are off on Alabama. Blake Sims would not be the answer. Maybe Alec Morris or Luke Del Rio, but not Sims. I guess they could still win running the ball possibly with Sims in there, but it would be a lot harder for them.

2013 College football season unleashed

A.J. and Tide aim for third consecutive and four out of five

Nick Marshall enters the fray

There are some classics to open the season this weekend. ‘Bama goes for four out of  five this year as they open in the Georgia Dome in the Chick-fil-A Classic against Virginia Tech. A.J. McCarron is 26-2 as a starter for the Crimson Tide with two straight national championships under his belt. He has had and will have this year a Mac truck load of talent around him, but 30 TDs and three ints last year is some pretty elite stuff. You have got to give him his due. He’s been phenomenal. AU opens in a very interesting contest at home against Washington State. What will Nick Marshall do under center? Can he create big play capability and not make mistakes allowing his running backs to capitalize behind an offensive line that should be younger, pretty good this year. Will the AU defense be good enough to slow down the aerial assault that Mike Leach and his Cougar team will deploy?  Other key games include Ole Miss at Vandy tonight, Mississippi State vs Oklahoma State Saturday afternoon, LSU-TCU in Arlington Texas Saturday Night, and a gigantic tilt in Death Valley in Clemson as the Clemson Tigers host the Dawgs in what could be an offensive showcase. Here’s a look at this weeks’ contests:

Last year: 152-44 (78%)

No.1 Alabama vs. Virginia Tech

Where: Georgia Dome, Atlanta (Chick-fil-A Classic)

Time: 4:30 PM CT

Network: ESPN

Line: Alabama by 20

The Tide has two areas of concern: the offensive line is breaking in three new staters. Arie Kuondijo will start at left guard alongside All-American Cyrus, his brother, who will guard A.J. blind side at left tackle. Ryan Kelly will start at center and Austin Shepherd will start at right tackle alongside steady veteran Anthony Steen, who will man the right guard spot. The Va. Tech defense is pretty good, but the Alabama line will be good; how soon they will be is a key storyline. All five guys have great size; it’s just a matter of getting the chemistry right. A.J. and Kelly’s chemistry will be something to watch. A.J. was used to the elite play and leadership of Barrett Jones, so we’ll see how A.J. and Kelly  work together. Also Shepherd and Arie must replace NFL first round draft picks Chance Warmack and D.J. Fluker. The other thing to look for is who will be the second back behind Heisman candidate T.J. Yeldon. There is a stable full. Jalston Fowler is listed second on the depth chart, but I’m thinking that Derrick Henry is going to assume the second back role at some point; maybe not this game, but eventually. Then you have Altee Tenpenny and Dee Hart. There’s Alvin Kamara and Tyren Jones as well and Kenyon Drake, who looks like he’s really dropped down on the depth chart. It just shows how good this team is at running back. There are six backs who could start for about anybody in the country and Yeldon looks like a high first round pick in 2015 if he can stay healthy. Wide receiver is loaded led by Amari Cooper. Tight end will be Brian Vogler and O.j. Howard or Brandon Greene. O.J is a five-star freshman who came in as an early enrollee and is probably the elite tight end of the future. Defense is stacked on the line. Linebacker C.J. Mosley and safeties Ha Ha Clinton-Dix and Vinnie Sunseri are the leaders, but you also have beasts like Jeoffrey Pagan, Adrian Hubbard, Brandon Ivory and Ed Stinson manning the front wall along with a dominating, talented second and even third string. Deion Belue and John Fulton will be the corners; both can really play. Expect good things out of the them. Va. Tech has the NFL potential quarterback Logan Thomas, as far  as physicality goes. Thomas is 6’6″, 254. But he’s prone to throw interceptions and Clinton-Dix, Sunseri, Belue and Fulton can get some picks off Thomas. The Hokie defense is solid, but their offensive line is banged up and is not great. I expect the Tide to dominate with their defense, running game and well-timed play action passes that will lead to big plays. Alabama gets through game one in good shape as A.J. and T.J. and even Amari shoot for their third (A.J.) and second national titles (T.J. and Amari) respectively, and make an early case for each one of their Heisman candidacies.

Nick Marshall takes over at signal caller in the Gus Malzahn debut. Marshall threw 18 touchdowns and 20 interceptions last year at Garden City Community College in Kansas. He ran for over 1,100 yards and led his team to a 7-5 record. I questioned this decision to start Marshall due to his accuracy issues. So it’ll be interesting to see how Marshall handles playing in front of 87,000 fans, who will be pulling for him, but will bring some added pressure. But AU can certainly run it behind stellar center Reese Dismukes and a talented albeit young offensive line. Tailbacks Tre Mason and Cameron Artis-Payne should have good nights against the Cougars’ defense. The AU secondary will be tested by the Cougar passing attack led by quarterback Connor Halliday who threw for 15 touchdowns but 13 interceptions in nine games as a starter last year on a team that finished 3-9. But the Cougars have some playmakers. They can cause the AU defense some problems. But like Auburn to grind it out on the ground and Marshall to make some plays with his feet and maybe a big play or two in the air. The Auburn receiving corps is not deep, but Quan Bray, Jaylen Denson and Sammy Coates are good players. I like a pretty close ball game due to the fact that Marshall is in his initial start. Going with the Tigers, but I like the Cougars to make it close.

North Carolina @ No.6 South Carolina

Where: Williams-Brice Stadium, Columbia, SC

Time: 5 PM CT

Network: ESPN

Line: SC 12 1/2

Like Ball Coach to have his best offense he’s had at South Carolina. North Carolina is improving and will be a good program soon under Larry Fedora, but the Gamecocks have solid quarterback play with Connor Shaw as the runner and playmaker, and Dylan Thompson as the passer. Mike Davis will be a heckuva running back this year and there is a talented wide receiver and tight end group. Of course, you’ve got the game- changer on the other side of the ball in Jadeveon Clowney. It’s a defense much like Georiga’s and LSU’s which will develop with some young players, but the key for the Gamecocks and the edge they have over those other two teams is their potential Heisman Trophy winner in Clowney. Clowney will be dominant. Teams will key on him, so he may not put up the massive numbers he put up last year, but his impact will be felt throughout the game when North Carolina is on offense and against offenses in the future this season. I like SC and Alabama in the SEC Championship game. Love this offense. Love Clowney. Who doesn’t?

The Rebs are the favorite and they have 19 of 22 starters returning, but I like this Vanderbilt team. Austyn Carta-Samuels takes over at quarterback this year and he’s a confident leader with a cannon and a good running ability. Ole Miss qb Bo Wallace had a pretty good year last year and he’s got some good targets to throw to led by wide out Donte Moncrief. Jeff Scott returns at running back. They’ve got a good offense. But I really like this Vandy defense. Think they can be pretty good. Two guys to watch for in the VU secondary are cornerback Andre Hal and safety Kenny Ladler. Their d line is talented this year and  the VU o line is pretty loaded up as well; unusual for Vanderbilt. But it’s a new era for Vanderbilt football. Vandy will be missing wide receiver Chris Boyd, which is a loss. Boyd has been suspended from the team for his involvement in the coverup of the sexual assault this summer. But potential All-American Jordan Matthews will be out wide and VU needs another receiver or two to step up. Jonathan Krause could be that guy. They’ll have to run the ball well They lost Zac Stacy to graduation and the NFL. They’ll use three guys. Ole Miss will start the top player in the country coming out of high school last year, defensive end Robert Nkemdiche, so it’ll be interesting to see how he performs. He’s 6’5″, 294, so he has the college physicality for sure. His brother, Denzel, an outside  linebacker, is an exceptional player. I’m expecting a stellar game. Vandy has beaten Ole Miss five out of the last six times they’ve played since 2007. I think they do it again.

State has a good team with a lot of size on both line and this’ll be a good game. The Cowboys have a lot of speed though, and as much as I want to pick State, I can’t do it. I like Tyler Russell, but he’s not consistent enough yet. Maybe that’ll come this season. Expect a good game though.

Addendum:I’ve looked at some State film in the past couple of days and really like what I’m seeing. Really like their offense Going with the upset. There are going to be a lot of points scored in this one.

Like this matchup here. Pretty marquee game. Will Zach Mettenberger be the quarterback LSU expected him to be when he came in two years ago? Their running game is still excellent with Kenny Hilliard, Alfred Blue and Jeremy Hill, who is back on the team after beating somebody up earlier this summer. This was after a sexual assault case a year and a half ago. Les left it up to the team and amazingly they voted him back on. Right. Guess they want to win. The receivers are good led by Odell Beckham and Jarvis Landry. Defense lost a ton of players, but it’s probably reloaded pretty well. But this is a good team they’re playing. Casey Pachall is back on the team at quarterback after coming back from personal problems of his own that were drug related. He’s a good quarterback. And Gary Patterson always has a good defense and returns nine of 11 starters. Should be a very tightly contested, hard fought game. I like the Bengal Tigers to prevail, but not by much.

A lot of people are liking Clemson here and there is a lot to like about this Clemson team. Tajh Boyd threw for almost 4,,000 yards last year and 36 TDs. Sammy Watkins is superb at wide receiver. They did lose running back Andre Ellington to graduation, so they’ll have a new tailback Rod McDowell. Clemson has a lot of weapons on offense, but this Georgia team is also loaded on offense. Aaron Murray and Todd Gurley start their Heisman campaigns this season. Murray threw for almost 4,00o yards and 36 TDs as well last year and Gurley ran for 1,385 yards and 17 TDs. The o line is back in tact, Malcolm Mitchell is a playmaker on the perimeter and Chris Conley and Michael Bennett give the Dawgs more options on the outside. Both are excellent receivers. Aaron Lynch is terrific at tight end and his backup Jay Rome is a playmaker too. The defenses will be highly tested in this game. Both are unproven, but athletic. It’ll be a classic. Like Murray, Gurley and the Dawgs to survive Clemson barely and move on to an epic clash with the Gamecocks in Athens next week.

Casey, Brandt, baseball guys

Casey with an int last night vs Seahawks
Casey had a pick last night. The Packers secondary coach, Joe Whitt Jr., had said Casey was fourth on the depth chart going into the game because he had missed a month with a hamstring pull. But Casey made a nice play on the tipped ball. He also had a tackle. Casey had six ints last year, so I would think he could get a starting job or at least a lot of playing time when the season starts. He started at nickel back, the fifth defensive back, most of last season. He’s a playmaker. He should be pretty much a starter once the season opens. Packers lost to Seahawks, 17-10 at Lambeau Field in Green Bay last night. ARodg played a quarter and a half. Russell Wilson of the Seahawks played a good two quarters. Seahawks have a very good defense and the Pack looked good on defense. Those two teams will be in the thick of the Super Bowl hunt this season.

Brandt finished up his round today and missed the cut at the Barclays by one shot. He shot even for his second round with birdies on 16 and 17, but missed the cut (even) by a shot. Brandt had nine birdies in two days, but also had 10 bogeys. He’s projected to drop to fifth on the Fed Ex rankings after this weekend. Matt Kuchar is leading at -11. Brandt will be in the field at the Deutsche Bank Championship at TPC Boston next week. Think B’s close again. Encouraged by those two late birdies. He fought hard through what looked like a lower back issue yesterdey.
Dave on the hill tonight for the Rays against C.C. of Yanks. Rays beat Bombers 7-2 last night. Rays percentage points ahead of BoSox in AL East now. BoSox lost to Dodgers last night, 2-0. A’s lost to Orioles, 9-7. A’s 3.5 back of Rangers in the AL West. Rangers beat ChiSox last night. Ryan Flaherty dh’d for O’s and was one-for-four. Braves lost to Cards again, 3-1, and the Bucs beat the Giants, 3-1. Bucs a game up on the Cards. Pedro did not play against Giants left hander Madison Bumgardner last night. Clint Hurdle gave ‘Dro the night off because he had played in 70 of the last 71 games and his practice routine had been very intense all during that time. Sounds like Pedro is really working hard. Very proud of him. Starting to pay off.
Braves 13 ahead of Nationals in NL East. Tough break on Jason Heyward. But he will be back for the playoffs, assuming the Braves are there which is a pretty easy assumption. Just need to get back on track.
Sonny and Mike are both on the hill tomorrow; Sonny at Baltimore and Mike at St. Louis. Both teams need to get it turned around, particularly the A’s. Happy for Ryan Flaherty though. Orioles are a very good team.
The St. Louis Rams are @ the Denver Broncos tonight and it’ll be interesting to see if Zac Stacy can get some action. Would love to see Zac get a shot to prove himself. I’m sure he’ll get some action. He’s had some general soreness in his leg and missed last week’s game at the Pack. Hopefully he can play tonight.

Pedro, baseball, D.J. football, golf

D.J. with a beautiful pick six last night
Pedro hit a couple of doubles and had two RBis last night as he helped lead the Pirates to a 10-5 victory over the Giants in San Francisco. Pedro struck out three times, so he needs to keep working on that, but overall had a good night. Hitting the ball well right now and playing very good defense. Pete now has 85 RBIs and 13 doubles. Getting more extra base hits now besides homers. Bucs now 75-52, one game over the Cards who beat the Braves last night, 6-2. Bucs 2 1/2 over Reds.Braves now 77-50 and have a 14 game lead in the NLEast. Tough thing about Jason Heyward getting hit in the face and breaking a couple of bones in his jaw. Feel bad for Jason. But he’ll be back for the playoffs, so if the Braves can just hang tough without him, they’ll have him back for the postseason. Braves at Cards tonight. Mike on the hill Sunday. Bucs at Giants again. Bucs had 13 hits. Good night at the plate. They have it in them. They have good hitters.

Rays a game back of BoSox and play the red hot Yankees at home tonight and through the weekend. Dave on the hill tomorrow night vs. CC. I’m not a huge fan of A-Rod, but I felt bad for him when Ryan Dempster hit him in the side Sunday Night. And you know what, it fueled a fire in the Yankees, they went on to beat the Sox that night and haven’t lose all week. They’re getting dangerous. Dempster got a five game suspension which is kind of a joke because he won’t miss a turn with days off. Sox at Dodgers tonight. Very interesting weekend with some key series.Dodgers playing incredible baseball and are at 73-52 now. Sox in LA this weekend.
Sonny on the hill Monday Night at Detroit. A’s a game and a half back of the Rangers. They are 71-54 and Texas is 73-53.A’s at Baltimore O’s this weekend and Rangers are at White Sox. Ryan Flaherty (’08) playing some for the O’s at second base. Had an RBI single off the Rays Tuesday Night. Hitting at a .364 clip in his last seven. Good to see Ryan play well. Corbs told me that O’s manager Buck Showalter really likes Ryan.
D.J. Moore with a 33-yard pick six for the Carolina Panthers. It was a beautiful play by D.J. D.J. came over to the Panthers from the Bears this past offseason. Hate that he’s not a Bear, but it looks like our former cornerback may have found a home as a nickel at Carolina. Carolina has a good team. Cam Newton is playing very well and their linebacker Luke Kuechly won the game for the Panthers over the Raves last night with a beautiful hit that caused a fumble that was recovered for a score and he intercepted a Joe Flacco pass that was a drive killer. Great second year player out of Boston College. Excellent football player. Carolina beat the Ravens at Baltimore 34-27. They’ve got a good squad.
Casey Heyward in action tonight for the Packers who host the Seahawks. Really enjoying the preseason games. In this third game the starters are playing into the third quarter. They’re getting serious.
Will have some football stuff on Monday. Brandt at +3 at the Barclays. Struggling a little. The cut is at even right now. It’s an excellent leaderboard with Webb Simpson on top and Adam Scott and Rickie Fowler a couple back. They are finished. Brandt needs to heat up some. Through four. Tiger playing well. @ -7. Webb done at -9. Keegan Bradley also at -7. Should be pretty awesome weekend in Jersey City.

Dave battles like a champion against a hitting machine; Pedro stellar with the stick

David, Pedro with excellent nights on the mound and at the plate

pedro alvarezDavid Price may not have had his usual awesome stuff last night, but he was pretty darn good. And did he ever compete in a highly significant game for the Rays against the Baltimore Orioles. The Rays faced the O’s at Camden Yards and Dave ran into some jams, one a bases loaded jam, another a first and third jam, but he got out of both of them with minimal damage, and kept his team in good shape for the playoffs as the Rays defeated the O’s 4-3 last night to take game one of this important three game set with Baltimore. David went only five innings–and wow it was a war–threw 99 pitches, 67 for strikes, 32 for balls, he gave up 10 hits, two earned runs with two walks and 6 K’s. His fastball was hitting 94 most of the time, his change up, his curve and his cutter were locating well and breaking sharply. The Orioles designated hitter, Danny Valencia,  was hitting only .239 coming into the game, but he was seven-for-10 against Dave coming in and was three for three off DP last night. That guy is David’s worst nightmare. Throw in the basher Chris Davis (.305, 45 hrs, 1115 RBIs), the stellar Adam Jones (.300, 25, 89), Brian Roberts (.265 in only 42 games, but an excellent hitter), Manny Machado (one of the best young players in the game, .296, 11-58)  Matt Weiters (hitting only .235 but with 18 hrs and 59 RBIs), J.J. Hardy (.258, 22-66) and Nick Markakis (.279, 8-50) and you have the best hitting lineup in the majors. Getting through that group is an Empire State Building–type order. The main thing Dave did was compete his heart out. He knew how important this series is to his team, and he was not going to let his team down last night. He left with a 4-3 lead, and Jamey Wright, Joel Peralta, Jake McGee and Fernando Rodney allowed only one more run, a homer by Wieters, to preserve the victory. Dave moved to 7-5 with a 3.29 ERA. More importantly to him and his teammates, the Rays moved to 71-52 overall, one back of the Red Sox in the AL East. The Sox are at 74-53. The Rays are a game up in the loss column and that’s significant. If the Rays can win more than the Sox do from here on out they win the division. Rays are a half game up on the A’s for the wild card lead. Would really like to see the Rays win the division though. It’s tough in that wild card game when you have one game to decide your postseason future. If you lose the wild card game you’re done for the year. The Rays want to win this division. If they have to be a wild card team, they want to be the top team to host, but they want to come out on top in the AL East. Last night’s game was critical. There still are 39 games left, and they all matter. This was a division foe who is chasing them, and the Rays need to get the series at Baltimore. The O’s dropped to 67-57, 4.5 back of Rays. Alex Cobb on the hill for Rays tonight. Alex has had an awesome year for the team. He’s one of those stellar young pitchers on the Rays’ staff. He’s 25. Alex is 7-2 with a 2.94 ERA and pitched a nice game last week in his first game back from the DL getting the victory over Seattle. He had a scary incident in June when he got hit by a line drive and suffered a concussion. Alex is back and looking very good. He’ll face Miguel Gonzalez (8-5, 3.84) tonight. If the Rays can get this one tonight, that would be huge. But what am I saying, they’re all huge now. Red Sox at Giants at 10:15 PM ET/9:15 CT. Sox beat the Giants last night, 7-0.

Pedro Alvarez with a big night at the plate last night. El Toro hit number 31 and drove in his 82nd run. He hit a solo shot as the Pirates beat the San Diego Padres, 3-1. Pedro also had a base hit with Andrew McCutchen on first and Pedro’s single got by the right fielder and both Cutch and ‘Dro scored. So Pedro accounted for all three runs the Bucs scored. Francisco Liriano had another stellar outing for the Bucs. He gave up four hits in seven innings, walked two and K’d 13. Francisco moved to 14-5 on the season. He has a 2.53 ERA. Mark “the Shark” Melancon finished it off in the ninth for his eighth save in 10 opportunities. Mark didn’t have his best outing giving up two hits and a run, but he struck out a pair and finished it off for Liriano. Mark’s ERA is now 0.93. The Pirates pitching has been superb this season. Bucs move to 73-51, a game ahead of the Cards who have been winning lately. They’re only two and a half ahead of the Reds, who have been surging as well. NL Central is a horse race with Secretariat, Man o’ War and Seabiscuit competing. Should be a highly compelling race the rest of the way.

Mike Minor didn’t have his best stuff Saturday Night. He got rocked. That happens occasionally to all pitchers. Hopefully, it won’t happen to Mike any more this season. Against the Washington Nationals, Mike only lasted 1 and 2/3 innings giving up four hits, four runs with four walks and two K’s. He threw 67 pitches, 40 for strikes. Just didn’t have his usual command Saturday night. Mike is now 12-5 with a 3.06 ERA. Braves came back and tied it in the ninth on a dramatic two-run homer by the red hot Jason Heyward, but lost 8-7 in 15. But the Bravos did take two of three from the Nats and are 76-48, 16 games ahead of the second place Nats in the NL East. The Braves have  the best record in baseball. Braves at Mets for two, then go to St. Louis for a four game set beginning Thursday. Mike faces Joe Kelly (4-3, 3.01 ERA 29 walks, 55 K’s) Thursday Night in St. Louis at 8:15 ET/7:15 CT on Sportsouth. Mike now has 36 walks on the season and 145 K’s. David pitches next against the Yankees on Sunday at Tampa against Ivan Nova (7-4, 3.17 ERA, 27 walks, 89 K’s).Dave has an astounding 19 walks and 106 K’s.

Sonny on the hill tonight. Pumped for that. Sonny and the A’s are at home facing the Seattle Mariners. Sonny 1-1 with a 1.00 ERA with five walks and 20 K’s. He was brilliant last Thursday against the Astros as posted last week. He’ll face Joe Saunders of the M’s (10-12, 4.86 ERA, 47 walks, 83 K’s). A’s are 71-53, a half game back of the Texas Rangers in the wild wild AL West. They are even in the loss column. Texas is 72-53. The Rangers blasted the ‘Stros last night, 16-5. They’ll play’em again tonight. Should be compelling in the west too, with the A’s and Rangers battling for the coveted division title.

Brandt in third place in the Fed Ex rankings, 841 points behind first place Tiger and 75 points behind second place Matt Kuchar. Brandt is playing with Tiger and Matt Thursday and Friday at the Barclays in Jersey City, New Jersey, just outside of the Big Apple. PGA commissioner Tim Finchem calls it the LIberty National golf course of the best golf arenas on the planet. Should be very exciting. Some people quit following golf after the PGA is over with, but I find the Fed Ex playoffs extremely compelling. Especially with Brandt right in the thick of it again. Looking for B to have a good weekend. Will have a preview and picks on the regular blog early Thursday morning. The top 100 players in the rankings after this tournament move on to the Deutsche Bank Championship just outside of Boston, then it gets cut down after the Deutsche to the top 70 for the BMW Championship outside Chicago, and finally the top 30 after the BMW play for the $10 million dollar first place prize money at the Tour Championship at East Lake just outside of Atlanta. Mathematically there will probably be about only five or six players who can win it all at the Tour Championship. That’s where Brandt won it last year. He was fourth and overtook the three guys in front of him to capture the Cup.

Luke finished in the 160’s on the money list and will have to play in the new format to qualify for next year’s tour. The 126th-200 players on the PGA tour will play with the top 75 from the Web.com tour in the Web.com playoffs, a series of three tournaments, with the top 50 finishers gaining their tour card for next year. The catch is the top 25 on the Web.com money list have already qualified for the tour, so there really are only 25 spots available for the 132 to 144 players who will compete in the series. Very interesting format there. A lot of pressure for Luke. It’ll be challenging. But I believe in him. The tour season made him tougher. The Web.com playoffs will end the week after the Tour Championship. Will keep you posted on that. The President’s Cup is in October too. Brandt in good shape for the team, but needs to play well in the playoffs to insure his spot.

Football practice going very well. One of the big things is the play of our defensive line. We’re pretty loaded up front on the d line this year. Very good group. O line playing well too. The other cornerback spot opposite Andre Hal is a position of interest. Redshirt freshman Paris Head is battling it out with senior Steven Clarke for the spot. Torren McGaster, another redshirt freshman, is in the competition also. So is redshirt freshman Taurean Ferguson. We’ve got a good group in the secondary.

Very bothered with what happened this past summer. Extremely empathetic for the victim and her family. It’s was sad and very tragic and still is. It’ll take a good while to get over this. Just feel really bad for the victim.  I hope the Vanderbilt community is reaching out to her with everything they’ve got to give her all the support she needs. It was horrific. But we do have a lot of good kids on the team. I know James, Vice Chancellor Williams and Chancellor Zeppos were very saddened and disturbed by this incident as a lot of people are. It’s very troubling. I’m excited about Ole Miss, but troubled by what happened. Hopefully the victim can get her life back on track and have a great life ahead of her. She deserves it.

Tigers start off with Mike Leach and the Cougars

Gus, Mike Leach lock horns on Sat, Aug. 31 @ 6 CT on ESPNU

mike leachMike Leach coached some prolific offenses as Texas Tech and he is trying to build the same kind of attack at Washington State, AU’s first opponent on Saturday, Aug. 31, @ Jordan-Hare at 6 PM CT on ESPNU. AU will face a pretty formidable opponent in Washington State.

The Cougars’ offense will be a high octane, aerial attack. Connor Halliday returns at quarterback for his redshirt junior year. He was 151-of-290 (52.1%) for 1,874 yards and 15 touchdowns last year. But he also threw 13 interceptions in 2012. He threw it around a lot in the nine games he started and played. He threw it over 60 times against Colorado and Oregon–the Cougars lost both games, 35-34 to Colorado, and 51-26 to the Quack Attack. The Cougars finished 3-9 overall in Leach’s first year and 1-8 in the Pac-12. But I watched their spring game and Halliday really came on in the second half in that game. The Huskies throw a lot of short, quick, slant stuff and let their receivers make plays in the open field. Halliday threw a pair of TD’s in the Cougars most recent scrimmage last Saturday, and he’s had some playmakers emerge. Expect corners Chris Davis and Joshua Holsey to be tested frequently. An interesting stat is even though the offense returns eight starters, including most of their offensive line, they led the nation in sacks allowed last year, giving up 57. They were a smallish group last year averaging 270 across the front, but looking at the roster, there is more size there, some 300 pounders, so it’ll be interesting to see how Dee Ford ( DE, 6’2″, 240, but not likely to play), Jeffrey Whitaker (DT, 6’4″, 310), freshman standout Carl Lawson (DE, 6’2″, 258), Gabe Wright (DT, 6″3″, 296) and company handle them. That could be a big determinant in the outcome of the game.

Washington State has some good playmakers on the perimeter. Freshman River Cracraft (6’0″, 198 WR) caught six passes for 144 yards and two TDs in last Saturday’s scrimmage. He looks like a go-to guy for them this fall, so Davis and Holsey will have to be ready for him. Some returners who are also good players on the flanks are Gabe Marks (49-560, 2 TDs), Isiah Myers (42-238, 4 TDs), Bobby Ratliff (30-399) and Kristoff Williams (22-192, 4 TDs). The Cougars also use running back Ricky Galvin out of the backfield on swing passes and he’s pretty effective in the passing game. That is pretty much the extent of their  running game as well. That’s just how Leach plays offense, though Galvin looks like a capable runner. With an offensive line that is developing and the way Leach likes to throw it around, I’m looking at the Cougars throwing it 40 to 50 times this game.

Defense is better than most might think. Safety Deone Bucannon (6’1″, 215, Sr.) is the heart and soul of the group. He didn’t play in the spring game, but the commentators were calling him “the quarterback” of the unit. He registered 106 tackles last year (led the team), and picked off 4 passes. Will be a guy NIck Marshall has to account for in the passing game. Linebacker Darryl Monroe (6’1″, 235, RS Soph) recorded 80 tackles last year with 8.5 for loss and three sacks. He will be a key player for the o line and Jay Prosch to handle. A big time player up front is defensive tackle Xavier Cooper  (6’4″, 303, RS Soph). Copper had 8.5 tackles for loss and three sacks last year, and in last Saturday’s scrimmage, he recorded two sacks. Looks like a real dominant type player. The Cougars’ defensive front is one of their strengths, so it’ll be a good test for Reese Dismukes and his offensive line teammates, whom I expect to be a pretty solid unit this fall and have a very bright future with some young hosses developing.

The key to me in this game is the play of Marshall. The quarterback is always the most critical player on the field and this is Marshall’s first opportunity against a pretty good opponent, so he needs to perform well. Marshall threw 20 ints last year in junior college in Kansas which I’ve already talked about, but he is fast as a locomotive and can make a lot  happen on the ground and in the air. He’s got a strong arm and he can be a really dynamic player. Gus must really believe in him and obviously believes that Nick gives Auburn the best chance to win as many football games as possible this year. I’m looking at six, seven and eight wins if things go pretty well. Nine is optimistic, but not out of the question.

Washington State is a huge game in setting the tone for the season. If Marshall can play well, and Cameron Artis-Payne, Tre Mason and Corey Grant can have big games on the ground behind a building, talented line, and guys like Sammy Coates step up on the perimeter, that would be a huge lift  for this football team if they can get this first  game.

The toughest games this season are @LSU (9-21), @ A&M (10-19), home vs. Georgia (11-16) and home vs Alabama (11-30). Those games will be difficult, but who knows what A&M is going to be like? Will Johnny Manziel make it on the field this year? If he’s not eligible, AU can win that game. LSU is totally unknown on defense. They lost eight starters off their defense, and I’m not convinced Zach Mettenberger is that great at quarterback. So those aren’t out of the question particularly if Manziel doesn’t play. Georgia and Alabama will be tough, but you never know. Key tossup games are vs. Ms. State (9-14, home), vs. Ole Miss (10-5, home), @ Arkansas (11-2) and @ Tennessee (11-9). If AU can win those, it could be a pretty nice season. If the running game and line can take the pressure off Marshall that will really help. If Marshall can’t get the job done there are two other capable guys behind him. Jeremy Johnson looks like he’ll be stellar in the future. He’s 6″5′, 219. Also, Chase White, a highly talented qb commit, is coming in next year. Still like Jonathan Wallace.

Washington State is first up and is a critical game. Can’t wait.

Wow, what a first weekend. On Saturday, 8-31,  it’s No.1 Alabama vs. Va Tech (4:30 PM CT, ESPN, Georgia Dome, Chick-fil-A Kickoff Classic), No.5 Georgia @ No.8 Clemson in Death Valley (blockbuster there, 7 PM CT, ABC), No.12 LSU vs. No.20 TCU (8 PM CT, ESPN, Cowboys Classic, Arlington, Texas, Jerry World), Mississippi State vs. No.13 Oklahoma State (Texas Kickoff Classic, Reliant Stadium, Houston, TX, 2:30 PM CT, ABC). The season opens Thursday Night, 8-29, with Ole Miss @ Vandy  ( 8:15 PM CT, ESPN), and is preceded by South Carolina hosting North Carolina at Williams Brice Stadium in Columbia, SC, Thursday Night (8-29, 5 PM CT, ESPN). Jadeveon Clowney kicks things off.

The season is here. Gotta love it. Previews and predictions begin a week from Thursday, Aug. 29th, @ Noon CT. Meantime, I will have a lot more this week and next leading up to opening kickoff.

Sonny brilliant; Pedro not so much; Brandt with a good day

Sonny graySonny went eight for the Oakland A’s today, giving up four hits, no runs, with one walk and nine strikeouts. A’s won 5-0. Sonny threw 118 pitches, 75 for strikes, with 43 balls. Sonny throws a sinking fast ball so sometimes he misses low or in the dirt. I’m going to watch the taped version tomorrow afternoon, but he must have been exceptional. Sonny moves to 1-1 and has a 1.00 ERA. He has walked. Sonny has now walked five guys on the season and struck out 20. Lovin that. A’s now 68-52 and virtually tied with the Rays for first in the AL wild card standings. Rays at 67-51. A’s have played two more games to date. Rays host the Mariners tonight with Alex Cobb coming off the disabled list to pitch. Alex will face veteran Joe Saunders of the M’s. Rays and A’s are my two favorite teams in AL. Gotta still go with my Rays to trump every team in my favorite category. But want Sonny and A’s to get to October too. But if they faced off in the wild card game would have to go with my staple, DP and the Rays.
Pirates lost a tough one, 6-5, in 12 to the Cards. Bucs now two up on the Cardinals in the NL Central. Pirates now 71-49, Cards 69-51. Bucs host Zona Dbacks this weekend. Braves off tonight. Host Nationals this weekend. Mike vs Strasburg Saturday Night. Rays host Toronto for a weekend series. Dave will pitch again Monday night at Baltimore. A’s host a good Cleveland Indians team this weekend. Sonny will pitch next Tuesday when the A’s host Seattle. First pitch at 10:05 PM ET/9:05 CT. I’m tired already thinking about Wednesday, but that’s the job and I’m very pumped about Sonny. Will absolutely get that done for Wednesday.

Bears coming up at 8 PM ET/7 CT on ESPN.

Brandt with a good day shooting -1, 69 at the Wyndham Championship in Greensboro, NC. Brandt won there in 2007, his rookie year. He’s five back of leaders Chris Stroud and Ross Fisher. Brandt started a little slow on the front going one over, but birdied the Par 3, 12th and the par 5, 15th.Luke at +2, OK position. Really needs to make this cut and hopefully do well once he does.

Football with a solid practice yesterday. Another freshman receiver to watch is Carlos Burse, the four-star out of Alpharetta, Georgia. Carlos is 6’2″, 202, so he is ready for college football Saturdays. He along with Rayford and Cunningham are having very good camps. ACS with a good practice and Patton Robinette is closing the gap on Josh Grady for the number two job under center. Patton has a lot of talent, and he’s very smart, so things look to be clicking for him. Good depth at linebacker with redshirt freshmen and a couple of true frosh, Zach Cunningham and Oren Burks, looking good in camp. Ja’karri Thomas, a redshirt frosh, has a nice practice yesterday according to reports. We’ve got some really good players at lb.

Nothing right now on football recruiting front though four-star receiver Jalen Brown has us in his top five with Ohio State, Wisconsin, the Quack Attack and Oregon State. Josh is one we really want. He took an unofficial a week and a half ago and we made his final cut for officials. He’s coming to town Oct. 4 to see us play Mizzou. Would be a very good pickup.  Four-star receiver Jamil Kamara out of Virginia also has us in his top seven. Would be nice to get both of these guys, and/or four-star Josh Malone who we are heavily involved with.

Basketball could get Wade Baldwin, a three-star combo guard to come our way. Wade is from New Jersey and has a great relationship with new VU assistant Yanni Hufnagel, who recruited him at Harvard before coming to VU this summer. Watched film on Wade and like his game. He’s tough physically is an excellent finisher, he’s strong, he’s a competitor and can shoot it well. Wade is 6’2″, so he’ll definitely have to shoot it well and play good defense to help us, but he looks like a tremendous competitor. We need about  three more in this class, particularly a power forward or two. I’d love a 6’8″, 6’9″ 230 pounder, or better yet, two of”em.

Will hit ya back in the next couple of days.

Va Tech

Frank Beamer has done an excellent job at Virginia Tech and he's still as focused as ever
Frank Beamer has done a tremendous job with the Virginia Tech program in his 27 years at the helm. He has taken his Hokies’ teams to 20 straight bowl games and six BCS games. He took his ’99 team with Michael Vick under center to the BCS National Championship game against Florida State, which they lost. 46-29, in the 2000 championship game played at the Sugar Bowl in N’awlins. Beamer’s team fell off last year finishing 7-6. But he’s solid coach,  good man and he runs a very good  football program. Beamer is 66.He is 216-104-2 in his career at Va Tech (67%)

Logan Thomas returns for his senior year as signal caller. The Hokies face the Crimson Tide in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff game at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta on Saturday, Aug. 31, @ 5:30 PM ET/4:30 CT on ESPN.

Talk about a prototype quarterback, Thomas is 6’6″, 254. He’s got a cannon and pretty good wheels. He’s not incredibly fast, but moves pretty well and throws pretty well on the run. Last year, he was not great, throwing for 18 touchdowns and 16 interceptions. He did throw for almost 3,000 yards, but completed only 51.3% of his passes. The talent is there, but the consistency needs improvement. In the spring game he threw two pick sixes to the second team defense. One was for 98 yards and the other was for over 50. He threw a third interception too. I don’t know if you can teach better accuracy, but maybe new OC Scott Loefler (Auburn OC in 2012)  can get Thomas to make better decisions. Alabama’s defense is going to be tough, and the corners and safeties will be chomping at the bit to step in front of a Thomas pass and take it to the house. The line is big, but they have a lot of work to do the rest of this preseason to become a solid unit. They have some size; most of them are300+. They’re pretty high on their freshman left tackle Jonathan McLaughlin, who is 6’5″, 313. He’ll be facing the likes of Adrian Hubbard, Ed Stinson and Jeoffrey Pagan among the loaded Tide defensive front, so he’ll have his hands full. The Hokies do have good size though up front.

Beamer said after the spring game that his defense should be very good  and they’re going to have to carry them for the first part of the season. There are a couple of playmakers on offense. D.J. Coles is back from a knee injury and he looks pretty good at wide out. On the other side, Demitri Knowles looks like a pretty good player at flanker. Ryan Malleck is a very solid tight end whom they will use a lot in the passing game. Tailback didn’t look great in the spring game, but it didn’t look like the line was doing much run blocking. Trey Edmunds is the starter. He’s 6’1″, 216.

The defense looks pretty good though. I don’t know if it was Thomas or the offensive line, but their second unit on defense really played well. Their starting secondary is very good. Antone Exum hurt his knee pretty badly in a pickup basketball game in the winter. They hope to have the senior cornerback back for the first game. He’s questionable. He had five ints last season. The guys back there now who are listed as ones on the depth chart are corners Kyle and Kendall Fuller (brothers, Kyle a senior, Kendall a frosh in place of Exum), free safety Detrick Bonner and rover Keyshoen Jarrett. They are very good players. Tariq Edwards (6’2″, 234) is the leader of the front seven at inside linebacker. The Hokies run a four-three under heralded defensive coordinator Bud Foster, who at some point should get a head coaching job,  maybe when Beamer retires. Foster is 54. They have some pretty good size up front, so they’ll test the somewhat new Alabama offensive line besides returning starters left tackle Cyrus Kuondijo and right guard Anthony Steen

The Hokies special teams are always good. Looks like they have a good kicker and punter and their return game looks pretty good.

Should be an interesting first game for both teams. It’ll be hard on the Va Tech defense unless their offense can get some drives and scores. A.J., T.J., Derrick Henry or Kenyon Drake and the wideouts might wear them down by the fourth quarter. But this is a competitive team. Should make some noise in the ACC. Will be a good watch.

PGA

Not going to delve too much into the specifics of the Wyndham Championship at Greensbore, N.C. (Sedgefield CC), but I’ll pick a winner:

Zach Johnson

DP not exceptional, but solid, fights hard, Rays win

Dave battled

Pedro, Pirates have a good night at Busch Stadium

David Price didn’t have his best stuff last night, but he kept battling and helped keep his team in the game as the Rays fought back from a 4-1 deficit and beat the Seattle M’s in the bottom of the ninth scoring two times to win, 5-4. It was a highly needed victory. They Rays had dropped six in a row, after getting swept by Arizona and LA Dodgers last week and losing the first game to the Mariners on Tuesday Night. David pitched fine. Not his best, but he really competed and threw a lot of strikes once again. His fastball was topping out at 93, not his best, but his change up and his curve were working well. Dave went seven, gave up five hits, four runs, with one walk and seven K’s. He threw 117 pitches, 85 for strikes and 32 balls. I loved the way he pitched really. He got a couple of bad breaks that led to runs earlier in the game, but Joe Maddon put him out there in the seventh, when I thought he might pull him after six when Dave had thrown 101 pitches. I like the fact that Joe trusts Dave completely, and knows even if DP is a little tired he will battle. Dave got’em three up, three down in the seventh and gave his team a chance. The Rays scored two in the bottom of the sixth to cut the lead to 4-3. Jake McGee and Joel Peralta kept the M’s at four runs and the Rays opened the bottom of the ninth down a run.

Ben Zobrist led off with a deep blast to right the just missed going out. It hit the two pieces of yellow padding at the  top of the wall and came back into play. Ben got a triple out of it. Matt Joyce came up next and quickly got two strikes against him, but he bounced the next pitch over the pitchers head and past a drawn in infield for the  game tying base hit. Longo then doubled and Wil Myers was intentionally walked. Newly called up outfielder Jason Bourgeois, a 31 year old journeyman player, came up and hit the second pitch over the right fielder’s head for the game winner. It was almost relief for the team. Jason seems like a great guy, and he probably kept a spot on the roster with the game winning hit. Pitcher Alex Cobb is coming off the disabled list and pitching today, so the Rays have to send down a player. I bet it will be Ryan Roberts, whose bat is anemic.

Just a huge victory for the team. The BoSox lost last night to the Blue Jays, so the Rays are three back of Boston. The Astros beat the A’s, so the Rays are the overall leader in the wild card standings, leading the A’s by a half game. The Rays are 67-51 and the A’s are 67-52. The Orioles are next at 65-55, three back of the Rays and 2 1/2 back of the A’s.

Speaking of the A’s, Sonny Gray gets the call today for the A’s in a 3:35 PM ET/2:35 CT start against the Astros. Big start for Sonny as it is important for him and his team. The A’s trail the Texas Rangers by two in the AL West. Sonny is 0-1 with a 1.80 ERA with four walks and 11 K’s. Just needs to keep his control and he should be good. Sonny facing veteran Eric Bedard who is 3-8 with a 4.28 ERA. Bedard has walked 56 and struck out 106.

Pedro and the Bucs won last night, 5-1, over the Cards in St. Louise. Pedro hit number 29 last night and got his 76th RBI. Still struck out twice. I don’t know how you correct that if you’re Pedro or the Pirates hitting coach. Just needs to really try and see the ball better. I know it’s hard when you have four seconds to react to a pitch. Just have to remain patient and Pedro just needs to get better and better. Good win for the Bucs though. Bucs snapped a four game losing streak and moved to 71-48, three games ahead of the Cards, who are 68-51.

Braves still rolling. SI has them atop the power rankings and I believe that 100 percent. Braves now 74-47, the best record in baseball. They’re still cruising, but need to finish strong. Won 6-3 over Phillies last night. Jason Heyward went yard last night, his 11th of the season. He’s heating up and with him, Justin Upton, Freedie Freeman, Brian McCann, Evan Gattis and Chris Johnson, the Braves are really stroking it right now. Just ona roll. The Braves are the team to beat barring injuries. I have the Rays to win it all from my prediction in April, so not giving up on that pick, but the Braves are outstanding. Mike Minor (12-5, 2.87 ERA, 32 walks, 143 K’s) goes Saturday against the Nationals’ Stephen Strasburg (6-9, 2.83, 43 BB’s, 153 K’s).

Bears in action in preseason game tonight at Soldier Field against San Diego Chargers. Should be interesting to see how Jay does in his probable limited action. But it’ll be a good gauge of the team. Earl Bennett out right now with a concussion. Hopefully, Earl can get back to action soon. Bears need him and of course want to see Earl play. One of my favorite athletes ever at Vanderbilt. Love Earl. Jay too.

Team practicing well in anticipation of the Thursday Night ESPN game with the Black Bears on Aug. 29th at 9:15 PM ET/8:15 CT. ACS doing well, JMatt is fantastic, Chris Boyd is fantastic, Jonathan Krause is going to have a breakout year and the freshmen wide receivers are having a very good camp, particularly Jordan Cunningham and Latevius Rayford. O line is going to be very good and deep, the running backs are solid; could even be better than last year, even though Zac was unbelievable. We have three very good rbs this year in Wes Tate, Brian Kimbrow and Jerron Seymour, and Raph Webb and Derek King are coming along pretty well. C.J. Duncan, a freshman like Webb, is making some noise. Could help us this year. Somebody or really two guys need to step up at tight end. Steven Scheu looks to be leading, but I still believe in Dillon van der Wal. We’ll see what develops. James was pleased with both Patton Robinette and Josh Grady as backup qb’s on Tuesday. Didn’t see anything on them Wednesday. Defense solid. We’ve got a really good unit there. Look for big things from Darreon Herring this year at outside linebacker. Among others. I’m pumped to see Caleb Azubike and Stepehen Weatherly play at defensive end. They’re going to be beasts.I’m also very excited to see cornerback Andre Hal and safety Kenny Ladler play. Can see five or so interceptions from both. Both potential first team All-SEC players and possible All-Americans. Chase Garnham is one of the best kept secrets in the league at linebacker. Will have a great year.

Basketball team having a great time and getting some good reps in Greece and Italy on their trip over there for bball and a little culture. The guys needed to get away from the stuff that went on in late July with Kedren and Kevin Bright. Kedren got kicked off and Bright left the team to play pro ball in Germany. Eric McClellan and Damian Jones, two of our newcomers, are ballin’ in Europe. I think we’re going to be real pleased with them. Rod Odom has been very solid as has Kyle Fuller. We’re going to have a good team. Nobody expects us to be good, but we are going to be.

Brandt at even through four at the Wyndham Championship in Greensboro, N.C. Luke at +2 through 17.

Will have a Sonny report later…

Sonny on hill today vs. Astros

Pro guys

Freddie Freeman is a hoss
Braves are the best team in the majors right now with the Dodgers running a close second. That could be an epic matchup in the playoffs. Braves now 72-46 after taking two of three from the Marlins over the weekend. Best record in baseball. Jason Heyward looks like he’s heating up. He was four-for-five yesterday. Freddie Freeman just keeps on rolling. He was two-for-three yesterday with three RBIs. Freddie is now hitting .313 with 14 homers and 79 RBIs. He hit another deep one yesterday. Mike Minor got the win for the Braves, who won 9-4. Mike went seven, gave up six hits with four earned runs, one walk and six K’s. He  threw 100 pitches with 67 strikes and 33 balls. Just over a 2:1 ratio. That’s good stuff. Mike now 12-5 with a 2.87 ERA. Braves are in a very good place right now and it doesn’t look like it’ll slow down any time soon. Very impressive. Mike’s next outing is Saturday at home against Strasburg and the Nationals. Should be an epic there. Really looking forward to that.

David pitched Friday Night for the Rays at the LA Dodgers and should have gotten the victory. Price went seven, gave up one unearned run, seven hits with one walk and four K’s. Dave threw 99 pitches, 63 for strikes with 36 balls. Not his best performance, but good enough for his team to win. The Rays had a 6-3 lead in the ninth, but the unreliable Fernando Rodney blew another save giving up four in the ninth to lose it for his team. It was very, very disappointing. The Rays got shellacked by the Dodgers the rest of the weekend. Zack Greinke shut them out 5-0 Saturday Night and Clayton Kershaw beat them 8-2 last night. Those are two former Cy Young award winners and we had our two worst starters going against them, so I knew it would be a very tall order to take one of those. But Dave and the team should have gotten the game Friday Night. Rodney is a problem. The whole bullpen except for Joel Peralta and sometimes Alex Torres is a problem. Could be the Rays’ demise there, that bullpen. They have a guy they traded for with the White Sox who will be coming in at the end of the month, who is supposedly really good. He’s an eighth inning guy, but they need to covert him or Peralta into the closer. Rodney is just not working out. I don’t know how much longer the Rays can put up with this. If they don’t find answers in their bullpen soon, it’ll cost them the chance to play in October. Rays now 66-50, tied with the Oakland A’s for first place in the wild card. Three back of the BoSox, who lost two of three from a hot KC team. David pitches Wednesday Night at home against Seattle. Felix Hernandez will not be facing him. Guy named Harang who is pretty good.

Speaking of the A’s, Sonny Gray was on the mound starting for the A’s Saturday against Toronto.Sonny took the loss 5-4, and he fell to 0-1 with a 1.80 ERA., He had been very good out of the bullpen for the A’s before they sent him back down to the Sac town River Cats, but he came back up and started this past Saturday. He gave up four hits, four runs, only two earned, with three walks and five K’s. if Sonny can keep his control sharp, he will have a very good career in the big leagues. He struggles with the balls sometimes because he throws it so hard and his ball really sinks. But he’s got another shot on Thursday at home against the Astros. It’ll be a Thursday afternoon game and I will have a full report on that. A’s a game back of the Rangers in the AL West.

Pedro has been very inconsistent. Hit a homer yesterday, his 28th, a solo shot which was his 75th RBI, but he was one-for-four with two ring ups. He committed an error yesterday and committed two on Saturday Night. Needs to regroup. Bucs got swept by the Colorado Rockies. They’re now 70-47 and head to St. Louis for three, tomorrow through Thursday. Critical series.

Can’t really comment on the football situation except to say this is a real tragedy. Hope down the road there is some good news, but not at this point for the football program, and more importantly, for the University. The victim is the real tragic figure here. This is much, much bigger than football. Many thoughts and prayers go out  to the victim and her family.
